00:35And we welcome you back. What an event it was. The Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix. I'm Todd Harris
00:41alongside Hannah Diamond and Stevie Morrison. Guys, let's cut right to the chase. Hannah, I'll start with you. The final.
00:45What a showdown with the Australians, the Spanish and the Germans.
00:49Yeah, it was a great showdown, wasn't it? And I think, you know, two of the top hitting teams and
00:53one maybe slightly more underrated team in that final. It was all about the start as it has been all
00:59weekend. So getting off that line was going to be really important. We saw the Bonds Flying Roos line up
01:03really nicely at the bottom end of the line, the favoured end of the line in the end.
01:07And then maybe a little bit of a mistake from the Germans at the top end of the line, just
01:11having to slow themselves down a little bit, readjust their speed. But the Bonds Flying Roos have just been really
01:17strong this weekend, haven't they, Stevie?
01:18Yeah, I think at the moment, Spain, you know, Los Gaios and the Bonds Flying Roos are a class apart,
01:23personally. I think they're really, really good. And you just saw the accuracy of all the roundings here. You know,
01:27the Spanish all weekend have been very good at overtaking boats. But when you've got the boat ahead of you
01:31as the Bonds Flying Roos, they just don't make mistakes. They just didn't open the door. Spanish did roll the
01:35dice at the top here. But, you know, doing the wrong thing often isn't the right thing.
01:40No, and I think, so, often the Spanish have kind of rolled the dice a little bit in the final.
01:47And even from positions that we wouldn't think it would pay off, they have managed to make it work. But
01:51this kind of just wasn't to be.
01:52Yeah. But if you go back to the start, if you give the Bonds Flying Roos that much room and
01:58that much opportunity to choose where they want to go, Stevie, how do you beat them?
02:02Well, I think the interesting thing with that is they all have a plan. You know, we say that, don't
02:07we? The Mike Tyson comment, everyone has a plan until you're punched in the face, right?
02:11And they had the plan. Germany had a plan. They were first back. They set the time. And then people
02:15pick off against that.
02:16Normally, Slingsby likes to set the time. I feel like he's slightly loosened up. He's almost got a hint of
02:21burling about him.
02:22Got that little bit more freestyle of I'm going to react to you and I'm going to do a better
02:26job of it.
02:26So I don't know that they made any mistakes. He's just really got his predator's instinct at the moment.
02:32And what a party it was as the trophy was handed out on the shores of the Great Sound.
02:37This is something they've done a time or two. The Australians celebrating with a little bit of bubbly, the trophy
02:41in hand.
02:42So now they're on a roll, Hannah. And this is what it gets a little dangerous.
02:45Two for two. Who's stopping the Bonds Flying Roos when we get to New York City?
02:48Yeah. And they've got such a history of winning events and building that momentum throughout the season.
02:54So I think they're going to be tough to beat over the next few events. But New York, not an
02:57easy venue to win at at all.
02:58After the event, Lisa Dorman and catching up with her fellow countrymen, the Bonds Flying Roos.
03:05Congratulations, Tom. Another win on the board. How good does it feel?
03:08It feels amazing. I mean, we sailed so well all week. And to do it here, which is a second
03:14home for us for a long time.
03:16We love it here in Bermuda. And so amazing to come back and win in front of everyone.
03:20Yeah, I think you made every final here. But to get a win, it's just so much special.
03:23And another one for the wall. You're going to need more wall space without the wheels you've got.
03:26Yeah, no, we're doing well on the winds lately. But obviously winning at the end of the year is a
03:32big thing.
03:33But we're right on track. Team's sailing well. We've got an amazing team behind these guys with our shore team.
03:39And so it's so exciting to have everyone here.
03:42Awesome. Thanks, Tom.
03:44Hannah, we turn our attention off of the Australians because they don't need any more attention.
03:48And we talk about Jeremy Deutsche Bank.
03:50This is the team that after day number one did not look like they had any chance of making the
03:54final.
03:54And they really turned it on on Super Sunday and found themselves in that third spot.
03:58I think often we talk about needing to win races.
04:01And actually, Jeremy Deutsche Bank sort of stayed under the radar.
04:03They just put a really consistent series together.
04:06And when it came down to that last race, there was a little bit of pressure.
04:09There were a couple of boats that could have stolen that last one in the final.
04:11They absolutely nailed the start of that last fleet race.
04:14And I feel like all weekend, they just did a good job of chipping away and overtaking boats.
04:20Them and the Spanish were the best at moving through the fleet when they had to.
04:24And yeah, when they got ahead, they were pretty dominant.
04:26But if you think of Rio, they got better than they were in Sydney.
04:30You know, I think it's quite, in some ways, typically German logical processed way of getting better incrementally.
04:37And we're starting to see the team that we saw at the end of last season.
04:40Let's talk about a team that really missed an opportunity, and that's North Star Canada.
04:44On day number one, they looked good, Stevie.
04:45But it was the move in, I think it was race number six, that really cast the die and just
04:49took them out of it.
04:50They were in the top three.
04:51We had a graphic up on TV, and it had North Star Canada in the top three position.
04:55And then they weren't.
04:56Yeah, I mean, it's hard, isn't it?
04:58They were starting so much better.
04:59For me, they've had a positive weekend.
05:01I'm going to kind of let her see if she thinks that as well.
05:04They made a mistake.
05:05It's been the story of their season, but they've normally made quite a few mistakes.
05:08I feel like that, you know, could they have done something a bit different?
05:11I'm sure they could have done.
05:12But, yeah, they had a good weekend for me.
05:14North Star Canada really living on the knife's edge on the Great Sound in Bermuda.
05:18And a short time ago, Stevie caught up with chief umpire Craig Mitchell to break it all down.
05:23Well, yeah, Craig, so race three yesterday and pretty dramatic action at the start, wasn't it?
05:27We're going to get a bit of a look at it over here now.
05:29And we saw the sort of upwind end of the line, so it's going to be coming in way over
05:33there.
05:33We see the Canadian boat.
05:35It's got a bit of space, has it, on the line, coming into things quite early here, looking to line
05:40things up.
05:41They were pretty aggressive at the top of the line.
05:42That had been working in a few of the starts, hasn't it?
05:44And as we come in, we can see the Italian boats a little bit early back.
05:47And actually, they start to close up towards this end of the line here.
05:51Canada dive in.
05:52To me, I was screaming at the telly.
05:55And for everyone else to listen, I was saying that was too risky.
05:57That was too much.
05:58It was really, really tight in there.
06:00As we see on board the Italian boat here as well now, we're on the back of the Italians.
06:04And you can see, again, it all gets pretty tight.
06:07Now, I see it from quite an emotional perspective.
06:10I'm sure Phil Robertson got quite emotional.
06:12But you see it in a different light, don't you?
06:14You're looking on the Unpack.
06:15You had to make the call.
06:16So why wasn't that a black flag when I thought it was?
06:20So, I mean, I'm looking at the video there.
06:23You go, ooh, that does look a bit too close, doesn't it?
06:26And that's always the key of the decision is how close is too close.
06:28If you look at the UNPAP, you'll see that Canada are coming in.
06:32We identify them as being at risk.
06:34And they're going quicker than the other pair.
06:38And you've got Denmark there.
06:39You've got Italy there.
06:40Italy are the ones that we're actually concerned about.
06:43Denmark were clear astern and then bailed out.
06:47But then Italy are there.
06:49Do they have to take avoiding action?
06:51And is that warranted avoiding action?
06:53Or is Canada just through and gone?
06:55And it just begs the question.
06:56What sort of distances are we talking about?
06:58I mean, if you look at it on the UNPAP, it's a very emotionless clinical tool.
07:02So we don't get the wind noise.
07:04We don't get the spray.
07:05We don't get the, you know, this is all going to go really, really wrong really, really quickly.
07:09So we see it and we look at the distance and we go, well, you know, they're going 15 kilometers
07:12an hour quicker than Italy.
07:14You know, and so are Italy going to catch them?
07:17And we look at it and go, well, the gaps plus four, plus five, plus six meters.
07:22They're going away.
07:22You can sort of see how close it is on that shot.
07:25And we then talk to the teams and say, well, you know, we don't want to have people having contact.
07:31So how close is too close?
07:32Yeah.
07:33Well, I know for sure Phil Robinson will have disagreed with you, but you've met with everyone.
07:36I mean, again, the great thing with SailGP is you do actually do a review each day with the teams.
07:40You discuss the decisions.
07:41And what, you know, what was the takeaways?
07:44The takeaways is it's you don't want to get much closer and that we need to really make sure that
07:49we're discouraging that maneuver.
07:51But to the exact detail of how close is too close, that's still great in the gray area.
07:57Yeah.
07:57Okay.
07:57Well, there you go.
07:58That's the area you love to work in, Craig.
08:00And thanks very much for joining us.
08:01Really helpful and pretty insightful.
08:03We had a tight, tight moment there.
08:04I personally still think Canada will be pushing a bit too hard.
08:07But, again, you've got to deal in facts.
08:09So thanks for joining us, Craig.
08:10Yep.
08:10Cheers, David.
08:13Well, normally we don't like to hear Craig Mitchell's voice, but that was very pleasant.
08:16So we appreciate his time.
08:18We take a look at the standings and how it all went down.
08:20Bonnstein-Ruz gets the win and the 10 points.
08:22Well, this guy's finished in second.
08:23Jeremy Deutsche Bank in third.
08:25Then you've got Emirates GBR just missing out in the final.
08:27We'll explore Swiss finishing top five.
08:29North Star, heartbreak for them.
08:30They finished sixth overall.
08:31US Sail GP team dropped down to seventh.
08:34Then it's Red Bull, Italy, DS, Team France, Rockwell Racing, Artemis, and Mubadla, Brazil.
08:38Of course, the Black Foil is unable to go because they're both not quite ready yet.
08:42Let's take a look now at the season standings after five.
08:45The Bonnstein-Ruz with a 10-point lead over Emirates GBR, who are now in second as the defending champion.
08:51So there you have all the winners of five seasons of Sail GP.
08:55The Bonnstein-Ruz have three.
08:56Emirates has one.
08:57Los Gajos has one.
08:58And there's the US Sail GP team now out of the cut line.
09:01They currently sit in fourth place.
09:03All right.
09:03So after five events, Hannah, we'll start with you.
09:05Where do you think the league sits?
09:07Who do you like?
09:08Who's got the momentum?
09:09Obviously, the Bonnstein-Ruz.
09:10And how does this all play as we look forward to New York City?
09:12Well, I think there are definitely three top teams that are looking pretty hard to beat at the moment.
09:17And I think after that, the rest of the leaderboard is shaping up kind of in a bit of a
09:22position where someone needs to make a really big jump in their performance and how they're sailing the boat, how
09:27they're racing,
09:27if they want to beat some of those top three teams.
09:29And I think they need to do it soon because otherwise the three here at the top currently are going
09:33to be walking away with it.
09:34Yeah, I totally agree.
09:35I think those top three, I'd almost pick them now to be in the final, come the end of the
09:40season.
09:40I think massive.
09:41I think you're looking at teams down the league that have got to turn things around.
09:44We've been to Brazil.
09:45You know, Martini has got that ability to win a race.
09:48We kind of knew she always would.
09:49But there's a little bit of a lack of consistency in the structure of how they're sailing.
09:52They need to tidy that up.
09:53Rockwall, Denmark, there's too many mistakes happening still.
09:55North Star, you know, some improvement.
09:58But they've still got to make a result stick.
10:01And then, yeah, can any of these teams actually string together an event?
10:05Bear in mind, Spain won last time in New York.
10:08Yeah, interesting.
10:09Well, at the last event, we had Pete Berling, the driver for the Blackfoils of New Zealand.
10:14As we mentioned, their boat's not ready yet.
10:15It looks like it's going to be Halifax.
10:16But we did get Pete's thoughts not working here in the studio with us out on site in Bermuda
10:21as he looks forward to the rest of the season.
10:26It's been a super busy period since we haven't been racing in Auckland.
10:30I think initially it was really making sure we looked after our people, really built a solid plan forward.
10:36You know, obviously, Louis was the biggest priority on the recovery there.
10:39So making sure he got well looked after, managed to get back home to Antigua so he can continue his
10:44recovery there.
10:45And his recovery's going as expected.
10:48It's obviously a long road, but, you know, really positive.
10:51And being able to now do stuff and keep the muscle mass.
10:54So it's, you know, been great to see him making a really good recovery.
10:57And then it was more around how do we build a plan for the rest of the team.
11:03How do we work out, you know, when the restart date is.
11:06How do we continue to build the commercial programme and also get through new ownership.
11:12And then more recently it's become how do we actually make sure when we do get back,
11:16we've made some steps forward in terms of how we're performing since the last event.
11:19So, you know, it's been amazing to see the whole group come together through these tough times.
11:24And, you know, really everyone to keep owning their areas and that real excitement to continue to push it forward.
11:32And Pete, you're always welcome here in studio with us.
11:35All right, let's take a look at New York City.
11:36Stevie, this is an interesting thing.
11:38You've got the Hudson River, one of the most busy waterways anywhere with a massive city in New York City
11:43and people are commuting back and forth to Manhattan.
11:45So it makes it kind of tricky.
11:47What makes New York City special?
11:48Well, that's New York City.
11:50You know, it's just the big apple.
11:52There's, you know, there's Lady Liberty right there.
11:54But then from a sailing perspective, you've got quite a lot of current.
11:58You know, we often have sort of a light to medium kind of breeze.
12:01It should be solid foiling, but it can have, you know, if it comes off the city, it will be
12:05carnage.
12:06It will be absolutely crazy racing.
12:08But I think a big thing about that event, Hannah, is going to be the fact that there's no training
12:12before it.
12:13No, that's right.
12:14And with SailGP, there is very limited time on the boat.
12:17So the teams are using as many other kind of outside sources of information.
12:22They've got the Oracle data cloud that they can access, but they're straight into it.
12:26And just because there's no training doesn't mean that the event counts for any less.
12:30It counts for just the same as all the others.
12:32It'll be a fantastic show.
12:33Summer in New York City.
12:34There's nothing quite like it.
12:36So we're looking forward to that.
12:37May 30th and 31st in the Big Apple of New York City.
12:40Stevie, I'll tell you what, there's some yellow cab drivers in there.
12:42They might do well at the wheel of an F50 because they will thread the needle.
12:45Yeah, well, you know, we've certainly seen how you've got to be starting to get pretty brave, haven't you?
12:50The margins in it are so tight.
12:52Distance at the start.
12:53The accuracy has just really taken a step up this season.
12:56Yeah, it definitely has.
12:57And this weekend was so much about the starting, but New York's a different venue.
13:01The teams are going to have to be reassessing how they're prioritising their strategy, their boat speed, their manoeuvres going
13:06into that event.
13:07And I think it'll be a completely different event than we've had.
13:10Yeah, and how do you, I mean, how do they actually go about that?
13:12I just feel like they'll have a bit of momentum.
13:14It must be so hard.
13:15But I guess for the teams that are lower down, it's a good chance to reset.
13:18But for the Bonds flying roads, it must be gutting to not be able to get back in tomorrow.
13:22Potentially some massive opportunities for the teams that are a little bit further down the leaderboard.
13:25So it will be event number six of the 2026 season, part of the Rolex Sail GP Championships.
13:30We will be there.
13:31We'll bring you all the coverage.
13:32It'll be fantastic.
13:34The Big Apple, the backstage, if you can race there, you can race anywhere.
13:37So for Stevie Morrison, Hannah Diamond, I'm Todd Harris.
13:40We will see you next month in New York City.
