00:00Okay, let's turn to another of our special stories and newsmakers.
00:04Environmental activist from Ladakh, award-winning, is in jail, remember, for the last week,
00:10detained under the National Security Act, accused of triggering the protests that turned violent in Ladakh on September 24.
00:18Today, Sonam Vanchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, moved the Supreme Court,
00:24asking that a habeas corpus petition be filed under Article 32, challenging his detention under the National Security Act and seeking his immediate release.
00:35In a petition, Angmo claims that she has had no contact with her husband for the last week,
00:41calling it a violation of rules and of his constitutional rights.
00:46He's been arrested, remember, and taken to a Jodhpur jail.
00:50She says she has not received a copy of the detention order, has no information on the grounds of detention.
00:56Only yesterday, she had written to President Draupadi Murmu.
00:59Now she's taken her case to the Supreme Court.
01:03She's my next newsmaker.
01:11And joining me now is another of our newsmakers tonight.
01:15Gitanjali Jain Angmo is Sonam Vanchuk's wife.
01:18She's also the co-founder of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives in Ladakh.
01:24Appreciate you joining us, Gitanjali.
01:26You've gone and knocked on the door of the Supreme Court today,
01:30a week after your husband Sonam Vanchuk was detained, arrested under the National Security Act.
01:36Why do you believe that his detention, his arrest is illegal under the NSA?
01:44Yeah.
01:45So, thank you, Rajteet.
01:49His detention is illegal because he is in no way a threat to national security.
01:57He is a person who has worked very closely with the Indian Army.
02:03He has worked at the grassroots level for innovation.
02:07He has always represented India abroad with pride,
02:12be it through his Aisthup artificial glaciers or his passive solar heated buildings.
02:18So, such a person who has dedicated and devoted his life to the cause of education,
02:26environment, sustainability in India, in Ladakh, cannot ever be a threat for national security,
02:34especially when this very government has awarded our institute
02:39with the Best in Innovation for Passive Solar Homes,
02:44Scotch Award for the Aisthup artificial glaciers,
02:49for our work in Himalayan farmstays in ecotourism.
02:54So, how can the same person who, along with me as the co-founder,
03:02how can this person suddenly turn into being an anti-national,
03:07you know, when he was being awarded, not less than a year or two ago?
03:12Because the government, Gitanjali says that it was Sonam Vangchuk
03:22whose provocative speeches led to the violence that took place
03:27in which eventually, tragically, four people died,
03:30that he in some way was responsible for provoking that violence.
03:35It's your response to that, the violence that took place on the 24th of September.
03:41So, first of all, he immediately condemned the violence
03:45and he said that my peaceful method of protesting has failed
03:49and he called off his fast.
03:52And secondly, a person who has worked all his life
03:56for the upliftment of youth,
03:59for empowering them with education, with knowledge,
04:03cannot ever provoke them to go on a path
04:06which he never himself believes in.
04:09We've seen in the last five years
04:10that he has done all his anshans and fasts
04:15and padhyatras and marches
04:17in an extremely peaceful manner.
04:20So, a teacher,
04:21and he considered himself a good teacher above everything else
04:25because he has declined a lot of offers
04:28from all the political parties
04:29who wanted him to run for various positions
04:32because he wanted to always hold himself as a teacher first.
04:39So, a teacher always walks the path.
04:41If a teacher is talking about non-violence,
04:45he would never instigate violence
04:49or ask the youth to follow that path
04:52which he himself never believes in.
04:53So, you're saying...
04:55So, you're saying all...
04:58So, you're saying all the allegations
05:00that are being made about Sonam having a Pakistan link,
05:06the allegations that are being made
05:08that Sonam Wangchuk in some way
05:11was encouraging seditious behavior
05:14are all hogwash.
05:15Is that what you're saying?
05:16That you're challenging the government
05:18in this Supreme Court petition
05:19to prove that there is a Pakistan link,
05:22if at all, to Sonam Wangchuk
05:24because the DG in Ladakh
05:25tried to bring out a Pakistan link to the protests.
05:30Yes, absolutely.
05:32I have stood firm in condemning
05:35all these allegations
05:36as being absolutely business
05:38and as a propaganda
05:41and a narrative to frame him.
05:44And it is not...
05:45It is now that it has intensified
05:47but this witch hunt began
05:49about four years ago
05:52when first our application of FCRA
05:55was not allowed to go through.
05:57Then our application at the UGC
05:59was not allowed to go through.
06:01Then all the PSUs that fund us
06:04for our CapEx requirements
06:08for buildings through their CSR
06:09have told us
06:12that they have received calls
06:13from the MHA
06:14to not support us.
06:16Some of them withdrew
06:17at the last moment
06:18before signing of the MOU.
06:20And then there were
06:22a lot of other witch hunting strategies
06:25especially in the last one month
06:26and I have not done anything else
06:28but answer
06:30all the CBI
06:31probes
06:33and fact finding
06:35as they call it
06:36you know
06:37and all the IT summons
06:39and all of that
06:40I have been just busy
06:41doing that
06:42for the last one month
06:44and before that
06:45was the land
06:46that was
06:47you know
06:49unilaterally
06:50they said
06:50has been estuited
06:51back to the government
06:52even though the delay
06:53was on their side
06:54that they did not have
06:56a lease policy
06:56to be signed.
06:58So all this witch hunt
06:59had started
07:00and this arm twisting...
07:02So are you telling me
07:03Gitanjali
07:03when you use words
07:04like witch hunt
07:05are you telling me
07:06that the cancellation
07:07of your FCRA license
07:09the income tax probe
07:10the CBI probe
07:11has only started
07:12after Sonam Vangchuk
07:14took an aggressive
07:15position
07:16against the centre
07:17demanding
07:18Sikh schedule status
07:20for Ladakh
07:21until then
07:22the same Modi government
07:23was giving you
07:24various awards
07:25for what you were doing
07:27in the field of environment
07:29in the field of education
07:30you are telling me
07:31there is a link
07:32between
07:32political activism
07:34started by Sonam
07:35and these
07:36and these probes
07:37against you
07:38am I correct?
07:40Yes it is correct
07:41because
07:41this has only started
07:44so that
07:45we can be
07:48stopped
07:49from doing
07:50and he can be
07:51stopped from
07:52working for the
07:53Sikh schedule
07:53so there is a
07:55clear link
07:55between these two
07:56because the
07:58intelligence bureau
07:59used to visit me
08:00very regularly
08:02when he
08:03about two years ago
08:04when he went
08:06for his
08:07fast
08:07for the first time
08:08so
08:09they have been
08:10visiting our office
08:12and visiting
08:13us
08:14visiting me
08:15and asking
08:16all kinds of questions
08:18but
08:18they could not
08:19get anything
08:20they have access
08:22to all our
08:22financial documents
08:2399.9%
08:25of all our
08:26transactions
08:26are online
08:28through checks
08:29through net banking
08:30so
08:31there is no
08:32question of
08:33you know
08:34anything
08:34which is not
08:35transparent
08:36we have been
08:36filing
08:37returns
08:38with the
08:39you know
08:40the
08:41ROC of companies
08:43and all of that
08:43so because
08:44they did not
08:44find anything
08:45amiss
08:46so the only
08:47thing that was
08:48left was
08:48this NSA
08:49because it is
08:51this draconian
08:52act
08:52which does not
08:53you know
08:53need you to
08:54explain
08:54so can I
08:59ask you
09:00in conclusion
09:00it's a week
09:02since he was
09:03arrested under
09:03NSA
09:04have you got a
09:05copy of the
09:05detention order
09:06do you know
09:07what the
09:07condition of
09:08Sonam Vangchuk
09:08is
09:09have you been
09:09given any
09:10information
09:11or any
09:11access to
09:12him at all
09:13no
09:15that is why
09:16I waited
09:16for five
09:17days
09:17so first of
09:18all they
09:18had told me
09:19that as
09:20soon as
09:20he is
09:21flown down
09:21to
09:22Jodhpur
09:23central jail
09:24the officer
09:25would speak
09:26to me
09:26and make
09:27him speak
09:27make me
09:28speak to
09:29Sonam
09:29but that
09:30did not
09:30happen last
09:31Friday
09:31and then I
09:32waited for
09:33five days
09:33to get a
09:34copy of
09:34the detention
09:35order
09:35and it
09:36did not
09:37happen
09:37and therefore
09:38day before
09:39yesterday
09:40I wrote
09:41this
09:41representation
09:42to the
09:42president
09:43of India
09:43with a
09:44copy to
09:45the prime
09:45minister
09:45home
09:46minister
09:46law
09:47minister
09:47LG
09:47of
09:48Ladakh
09:48as well
09:49as the
09:49DC of
09:50Ladakh
09:50and even
09:52after one
09:53day of
09:54that there
09:54was no
09:55reply from
09:55any of
09:56them and
09:57therefore
09:57yesterday I
09:58had to
09:58file this
09:59corpus
09:59with the
10:00Supreme Court
10:01of India
10:02of India
10:02so you
10:06have no
10:06idea of
10:07his condition
10:08his health
10:09you have
10:09no idea
10:10of exactly
10:12how he
10:13is keeping
10:13am I
10:13correct you
10:14have been
10:14completely cut

10:22no access to
10:23his information
10:24I have no
10:25access to his
10:26situation to

10:28and do
