Rangers are reportedly nearing the appointment of Kevin Thelwell's son as their new recruitment chief, sparking discussion among fans and analysts. This potential move raises questions about the club's recruitment strategy and its implications for future player acquisitions.
The appointment could signal a shift in Rangers' approach to scouting and talent identification. Experts are weighing in on the potential benefits and challenges this new leadership could bring to the club's overall performance and transfer market activity. The key will be how this appointment aligns with the club's long-term vision.
00:00Hello and welcome to the latest episode of National World Fitba Talk, where we divulge all things Celtic and Rangers related.
00:09It's been another busy week in Scottish football and with both sides in European action.
00:16Today, at the time of recording this Thursday, Rangers in Austria to face Stern Graz in their latest Europa League League phase fixture.
00:25And Celtic are at home to Braga, Portugal, this evening.
00:33But it's matters elsewhere that we're going to be looking at today, starting with Rangers and the news that broke earlier this week,
00:42that they're close to the appointment of Robbie Thelwell, who's the son of Rangers current sporting director,
00:53Kevin Thelwell, who is due to take up a key role behind the scenes at Ibrox as the new recruitment chief.
01:04Robbie has previously held roles as technical scouting director and loan management operator at Norwich City for the past year.
01:15So he's got good experience there. He's 26 years old, previously counts Aston Villa amongst the clubs he worked for in a scouting position
01:26and also Premier League side Wolves whilst he was studying his degree in sports coaching practice.
01:35This appointment is close to being finalised. It's certainly raised plenty of eyebrows among the disgruntled Rangers fan brace at this moment in time.
01:45There's plenty already up in arms at the fact that head coach Russell Martin hasn't been relieved of his duties despite Rangers' diabolical start to the season.
01:56Martin said in his press conference ahead of this game against Stern Graz when asked about the appointment of Robbie Thelwell whether or not it was the right decision.
02:09Obviously it's a factor that his father Kevin has been dealing with and feels he believes it is clearly the best move going forward for the club.
02:20Of course Rangers' recruitment has been heavily scrutinised over the last couple of years, particularly since Kevin Thelwell was appointed last summer.
02:30Obviously a lot of comings and goings in terms of transfer activity, but as of yet the new signings have yet to seriously make their mark at Ibrox.
02:44Max Ahrens became the first of the summer recruits to get off the mark in terms of the scoring at the weekend and the 2-1 victory over Livingston and West Lothian.
02:57But certainly a lot of off-field issues remain at Rangers.
03:02The fans of course still very vocal towards Russell Martin.
03:07They don't believe he should be managing a club of their size and stature.
03:10It's understandable to see why given the style of play he's trying to implement simply it hasn't been working with the players he currently has at his disposal.
03:21Time will tell of course whether or not Martin can turn things around, but it's going to be very difficult at this stage to win supporters over given the nature and their dire start to the campaign so far.
03:36I must also mention that this appointment of Robbie Thelwell also comes as part of a shake-up behind the scenes at Ibrox.
03:49Nathan Fisher is also close to moving from Everton to become the new head scout of the club.
03:58He is currently head of emerging talent at the Toffees and is well-known to Thelwell and Dan Purdy given their previous links to Everton.
04:10David McGregor is also being promoted to the role of men's head kit manager and Jamie Ramson head of academy sports science.
04:19So certainly a major shake-up behind the scenes at Rangers as they look to turn around what has been a really disappointing start to the season.
