00:00:0030 that has just come down to pit lane. Yelma Berman has brought that car into the pit. Certainly an unscheduled stop there.
00:00:06They had a couple of spins during the warm-up this morning. There's treacherous conditions,
00:00:11but they also had a bit of a problem getting the engine up to temperature, not only the tyres, but the engine as well.
00:00:17So whether there's any lasting difficulties there, I do not know at the moment, but car number 30 is into the pit.
00:00:23Not really used to seeing the 88 car suffering so much at the moment. It looks like it's just down on pace.
00:00:28It has been in qualifying as well, but the Felbermeyer Porsche, under all kinds of pressures at the moment,
00:00:34looks like a bit of a cork in the bottle for those who are just charging down behind.
00:00:38And here we are, another stop here. I think those who may well have started on intermediates passively taken that as a bit of a gamble,
00:00:44back in to go for slicks as the sun comes out here. But that's going to be a constant question throughout.
00:00:50The weather is so variable here. Yeah, it is meant to dry out tomorrow, but who knows what we've got coming still today.
00:00:55It's definitely looking buried when you look up at the sky. And, you know, I sort of hope it'll stay that way because that'll keep it exciting.
00:01:02It will, won't it? I think the weather forecasters have been saying that it should be dry for most of the rest of the race,
00:01:08but certainly some potential for some showers later on.
00:01:11The guy who is on the move, that's car number 51. Tony Wielander started the air, of course, a Ferrari.
00:01:17You might remember, or might know that, that car had a big crash in the test day dip here a couple of weeks ago.
00:01:24Jimmy Bruni crashed it at the Porsche Curves. They worked so hard to repair that car for the race week.
00:01:31Exactly, Giancarlo Fisichella crashed it.
00:01:33And then Giancarlo Fisichella crashed it in exactly the same place on Wednesday.
00:01:38The team then, they didn't have a spare car. It happened to be just not allowed spare cars in the World Endurance Championship.
00:01:46But I'm kind of surprised there wasn't a spare Ferrari 458, so not too far conveniently away.
00:01:52But they thrashed to repair that car, and it's now already up to third place in GTE.
00:01:58Well, look at that. The 88 car seems to have picked itself up.
00:02:02Deeply involved with one of the vets here on track.
00:02:07He's, in fact, involved with the number 73 car, and really having a go, or at least getting alongside him, saying,
00:02:14I'm going to have a pass here in a minute. Really, really challenging them.
00:02:18And these top pro GT drivers are always racers, no matter what, 24 hours or not.
00:02:24They are sprinting and pushing hard right from the start.
00:02:26Oh, I'm actually suffering this flare here on the track.
00:02:31Number two car getting very, very lucky there.
00:02:34Alan McNish, let's not make it a short one, Alan.
00:02:36We've had that before. It'd be nice to see him coming all the way through here.
00:02:40On board at the start and doing a guarding job.
00:02:42There was a huge round of applause amongst the Audi boys when he took that position
00:02:47and really allowed the two cars ahead to just start getting heat into the tyres
00:02:51and more of a relaxed start than they perhaps have thought.
00:02:54As far as Toyota are concerned, Sarrazan and Wurz at the moment.
00:02:57The eight car, they're sort of pacing around here in formation, it seems.
00:03:03But it certainly looks like the seven car is looking quicker here.
00:03:07It does, doesn't it?
00:03:07You're right. Alex Wurz has certainly closed right up onto the tail of Stefan Sarrazan.
00:03:12And I wonder whether those two Toyotas might exchange positions.
00:03:16Maybe Alex Wurz can set off again after Alan McNish.
00:03:19He could fall back about four seconds from Alan McNish
00:03:23and about 15 seconds behind the race leader, Andre Lottereau.
00:03:28Well, if only the Toyota can keep some reliability,
00:03:31which has always been their biggest question because it's such a new programme.
00:03:34If they can keep the cars going round or even one of them going round,
00:03:37we could have a really interesting race today still with today and tomorrow.
00:03:41In fact, with Audi, because nobody wants to see only Audi.
00:03:44And I don't think Audi wants to be out there by themselves.
00:03:47They want to have somebody bring a race to them.
00:03:49As if by magic, the seven car is in fact allowed through.
00:03:52Clearly looking quicker.
00:03:54And I think he may well distance the eight car.
00:03:56Yeah, and he pulled out early there,
00:03:57came around the kink before the Mulsanne corner.
00:04:00And Stefan Sarrazan was giving way there to Alexander Wurz.
00:04:09So I think heads up driving there.
00:04:12The number seven car, that has the red wing mirrors
00:04:16as opposed to the white wing mirrors on the number eight car.
00:04:19So you can tell those two apart.
00:04:21And just to give you an idea of the actual pace of these front-running LMP1 cars,
00:04:25already we're seeing them lapping the back of the GT fields on this huge long circuit.
00:04:30So it just gives you a feel for how it's incredibly fast they are compared to the back of the field.
00:04:35Lots of time, by the way.
00:04:37Quickest lap so far, 326.302.
00:04:40And, yes, he's heading down to under that 26 mark here, the 326.
00:04:47Quickest of the rest, Alan McNish.
00:04:50In fact, of those in the 27s, Duval has managed a 328 last time by.
00:04:56So, yes, it's variable depending on just how much damp is out there.
00:05:01And it seems to have absolutely disappeared.
00:05:02There's a lot of temperature in the ground here, incidentally.
00:05:06It does bake off very, very quickly.
00:05:09They designed this track extremely well.
00:05:11I thought you were talking about the way that the water sheets away here
00:05:14rather effectively on some parts of the track.
00:05:17It gets dry very quickly if the rain stops.
00:05:19And a lot of it's just having the cars running over the top.
00:05:22Nothing drives a track faster than actual moving race cars.
00:05:25So it doesn't surprise me at all that it's dried out now.
00:05:28There are still some ominous clouds in the distance, though, from all different angles.
00:05:32We've talked about this before, that Le Mans is a big circuit.
00:05:35It's just over eight miles.
00:05:36You can have rain in one part and nothing somewhere else,
00:05:39which will make things very exciting if that starts to happen again.
00:05:42And I think I can predict that we'll have some more rain before tomorrow.
00:05:46Yes, I think so.
00:05:47The Aston, it's leading.
00:05:49It's Mooker.
00:05:50It's leading the class at the moment, the pros.
00:05:52The 97 car.
00:05:53That is Olly Gavin in the Corvette.
00:05:56If you're wondering what happened to Paul in class,
00:05:59Beretta is running third with Vylander closing him down in the 51 car,
00:06:03a car that has essentially been completely rebuilt.
00:06:07In fact, those boys had to qualify in the 71 car.
00:06:10They were allowed to do that.
00:06:11The FIA force majeure was declared, and they gave him sanction to do so.
00:06:15Just popped in a couple of laps, but clearly a very, very quick package, the 51 car.
00:06:19And it might be quite a story that they got all of their ill fortune out of the way early on.
00:06:24But look at the pressure that's being imposed here by Olly Gavin.
00:06:27This is great stuff.
00:06:28Oh, this is great racing so early on.
00:06:30And we knew the Aston would be fast.
00:06:32They've led most of the races they've done this year.
00:06:34But always that little bit of question of how hard would they have to push to keep that lead,
00:06:39and if they can keep it all under control.
00:06:41But Aston Martin has been here for many years.
00:06:43They know how to win.
00:06:44So does Corvette, however.
00:06:46And they really don't want to give up that title.
00:06:49Yeah, tremendous stuff.
00:06:50It's a great battle going on there.
00:06:52Here's this battle still raging on for ninth and tenth overall.
00:06:56A little bit farther back for them.
00:06:57And still in LMP2 is John Martin, who still leads for ADR over the Oak Racing car number 24.
00:07:04And in third place, Matthias Besch there in car number 46.
00:07:09That is the Tyriere by TDS racing car.
00:07:12Driven by...
00:07:13It's going to be a good mix that Christophe Tansot, along with Matthias Besch and Pierre Tyriere.
00:07:20And they've been sort of bubbling away underneath the surface.
00:07:23They're very much dark horses in that class.
00:07:25But it is absolutely too early to call what might happen in LMP2.
00:07:30I think it's absolutely wide open still.
00:07:32There's so many options.
00:07:33I think all that we can almost guarantee is that a Nissan engine will probably win LMP2.

00:07:50Some sticky moments for Toyota just while we were on the break.
00:07:53The 7 car picking its way through traffic already, which kind of gives you a sense of just the speed differentials between the classes here.
00:08:02After all, we are what you can see 23 hours and 33 minutes or so remaining here.
00:08:08The 7 car almost tagging, getting mixed up then, shall we say, with the 67 Porsche out there.
00:08:14The IMSA performance machine will be hoping for a decent result within that class.
00:08:19And it almost got very, very mixed up.
00:08:22The Delta wing, I can tell you, there we are.
00:08:25We'll keep introducing it.
00:08:27It is running 30th at the moment.
00:08:30It seems the pace it had in qualifying, where it was dead center, if you like, of P2, has dropped off a little bit.
00:08:36And when it comes to proper racing, as you can see, at proper pace here, then there are questions to be asked.
00:08:41And that's natural at this level of a project.
00:08:43And I think some of that that we're seeing there is just lacking a bit of heat in the tires up to this point.
00:08:48There we're seeing, again, the number 7 car just getting tangled up there with one of the GTs,
00:08:54which possibly that GT car was not expecting to be lapped so early on.
00:08:58Well, no, I'm sure it was expected to be lapped.
00:09:00But I think what happened there, I think the Toyota got in on the brakes too deep and didn't turn into the corner.
00:09:05And the Porsche guy did a good job there of realizing that the prototype hadn't turned in, so it went straight along with him.
00:09:12But I think it was a mistake.
00:09:13It looked to me like it was a mistake there by the prototype driver and just took it in a bit too deep.
00:09:18But no harm, no foul.
00:09:19Well, I think both went through the escape area there and back into the brakes.
00:09:22I think they were lucky that it happened where it did and they didn't have gravel that they had to travel through.
00:09:27Well, they're prepping for the zero car.
00:09:29The zero car's prepping to come in as well.
00:09:31We took a big look at them as well.
00:09:37Who was it that was coming in?
00:09:38The 38 car.
00:09:39Yeah, there we are.
00:09:40And the zero car, in fact, is coming in for a stop.
00:09:43We're going downstairs to speak to Nakajima out of the seven car that had that sticky moment through traffic.

00:09:58We can see you very focused on screen after half an hour of race.
00:10:02What do you think?
00:10:03Well, I'm just looking at the race now.
00:10:07And, yeah, Alex is doing pretty well.
00:10:09And we have one Audi, I think, in our sights.
00:10:13So, yeah, we are doing quite a good job now, I think.
00:10:16You just passed the car number eight.
00:10:18What is the strategy?
00:10:21Was it planned to push very hard from the very beginning?
00:10:24Well, basically, we had a better pace with Alex.
00:10:27So, we managed to get ahead.
00:10:29And we just need to chase Audi and give them pressure all the time.
00:10:33In your briefing before the race, was it planned to, you allowed to do the race in between seven and eight?
00:10:40Yeah, for sure, we are racing quite hard, even in the team.
00:10:44And, yeah, yesterday's qualifying, we were behind, but hopefully we can get ahead in the race.
00:10:49But the most important thing is teamwork.
00:10:51So, I mean, either number seven or number eight, if we can get to the, I mean, close to the top, it's going to be great.
00:10:59I'm so impressed with Kazuki Nakajima.
00:11:02I mean, a really good guy.
00:11:03He's 26 years old now from Tokyo, Japan.
00:11:06His father, of course, Satoshi, was a big star in Formula One, particularly in his homeland.
00:11:12And Satoshi made most of his career with Honda, but his son has made it with Toyota.
00:11:19And great to see.
00:11:20And he's driven in Formula One.
00:11:22He's won championships in the feeder series along the way as well, as we see Sebastian Bordet bring the dome into the pits.
00:11:29But Nakajima, he has a great attitude.
00:11:31He's loving this switch to sports car racing.
00:11:33He's been an open-wheel driver all his life, but really enjoying getting involved on the ground floor of this sports car program.
00:11:39I just wonder whether, you know, the Japanese have always been very much a part of Le Mans.
00:11:43But there seems to be a groundswell of enthusiasm for the endurance race and the World Endurance Series now.
00:11:49And I think very much there's funding coming in.
00:11:52Honda are starting to light up again.
00:11:54Toyota are back, as we know.
00:11:56It's magnificent.
00:11:57Yeah, Nissan in a big way with the Delta wing and all these P2 cars as well.
00:12:00And the news this morning from Mazda, they're going to be in the P2 class next year with a diesel engine.
00:12:09And that's going to be a fascinating project.
00:12:11And John Doonan has told me he's going to come up and have a word with us later on this evening, who is the motorsport manager for Mazda North America.
00:12:18He's going to come in here, hoping to have a chat with us later on this evening.

00:12:22I know that Johnny Herbert was actually fishing around for drives this year after he got on the podium last year, you may remember.
00:12:30I think he got the bug once again and thought, you know what, I can still do this and why not.
00:12:34There are our class leaders.
00:12:36We've got an interview.

00:12:39We'll be finding out right now, I guess.
00:12:41Lucas, how it's going on for the moment?
00:12:44Well, it's going well.
00:12:45As we expected, the first cars are still going quick, but the rhythm of the tires is slowing down a bit for them.
00:12:54And we're still with a good pace.
00:12:57So it's a really long race.
00:13:00Martin is doing really well, really good pace at the moment.
00:13:03So we just have to wait for 10 hours, 12 hours and to see what happens.
00:13:07But now we are in a good shape.
00:13:10The strategy is to keep it like this until the end.
00:13:14The LMP2 is really close.
00:13:17So what is your goal?
00:13:18Do you have an objective of the podium, I imagine?
00:13:21Well, our goal for sure is to come in the night, you know, to come into the night without any problem.
00:13:28And, you know, to keep our pace.
00:13:31All of us, we are weak.
00:13:33We have a good pace.
00:13:33Alex, Martin and me have a good pace on track.
00:13:36So we have to wait for the others, for the pit stops.
00:13:39And then in the night we'll see what's going on.
00:13:42But at the moment we are quite, quite well, in a good pace, faster than the guys in front of us.
00:13:49And, well, the first and second are still going very quick.
00:13:52But we'll see in the night.

00:14:19And I think he's a fantastic ally to have with the Brundles here.
00:14:24Yeah, no, Lucas Ordonez more than proved himself here last year when they finished second in LMP2.
00:14:29He's the true story of going from virtual to reality.
00:14:33Having never, ever driven a race car other than what he drove on his PlayStation.
00:14:37He's just come into motorsport and been really talented straight out of the box.
00:14:41And, of course, this year we've got the second generation of the European GT Academy and Jordan Tressen in one of the other LMP2 cars.

00:15:01And now they're looking around underneath the back of that because he is not, he's slipping back.
00:15:05He was slipping back a little bit even from the two Toyotas.
00:15:07So, oh, yeah, that car going back into the garage right away.
00:15:11That is one of the R18 Ultras.
00:15:13Audi have got two different cars here.
00:15:16They've got the e-tron Quattro, the two of those car number 1 and 2.
00:15:20They're the primarily silver-colored cars.
00:15:23They are running the hybrid system.
00:15:25The Ultras, R18 Ultras, numbers 3 and 4, are black and silver.
00:15:30It's a car number 4.
00:15:30They're one of the Ultras.

00:15:35Yeah, and I'm surprised you've seen so many cars come into the pits previously.
00:15:38We had quite a few cars come in around the half-an-hour mark.
00:15:40That's a little bit early, in my opinion, for any pit stops whatsoever.
00:15:44But we did see a good number of cars coming in.
00:15:46So I'm not entirely sure what's happened there.
00:15:48No, I think, you know, to some degree it's so busy here at the pit lane.
00:15:51And everybody tends to come in generally around about the 45-minute mark.
00:15:54Certainly a few guys have had some problems, including here apparently for the Pescarolo Dome.
00:15:59And that's a shame, as we see that there are a shot of the two Toyotas leaving exactly at the same time.
00:16:04I am surprised that they did bring the Toyotas in a lap apart, I must say.
00:16:08Me too.
00:16:09And just looking at the guy operating the fuel rig there, and he gestured as if to say that wasn't a full load.
00:16:16Oh, really?
00:16:16Well, it shouldn't have been.
00:16:17It shouldn't have been that early.

00:16:19Well, whatever he was trying to put into it, I think they pulled away while he hadn't actually fully removed.
00:16:24He wasn't happy.

00:16:25I'm sure one of the reasons they came in together there, and maybe one of the reasons it made that
00:16:28switch earlier on, the No. 7 car is pitted slightly farther up pit lane than the No. 8.
00:16:33They're in adjacent garages, but at least this way, with the order they were on the racetrack
00:16:38with the No. 7 car ahead of the No. 8, they were able to pull into their pit lane behind each other,
00:16:43so they weren't going to get hold up by the other car.
00:16:47They didn't have to drive around.
00:16:48Yes, of course.
00:16:50Possibly, we were probably in formation, so they didn't have to make that switch.
00:16:53And here is our race leader into pit lane as well.

00:17:16which is a bit of a mobile chicane here.

00:17:39with the tire wear that we're getting today.
00:17:41It's not very hot outside.
00:17:42I would expect Audi to change on either the second or the third pit stop,
00:17:46but probably the third should just be fuel.
00:17:49They'll try and change the drivers over when they change the tires
00:17:51just to give themselves a little bit more time,
00:17:53give the drivers more time to make sure that they're not holding up the actual pit stop
00:17:57with the driver change.
00:17:59It's a long old one, this.
00:18:01I wonder if they're going to start playing different fuel strategies.
00:18:04Alan McNish in the two car is away,
00:18:07and the Rebellion 12 machine is also just coming into the pits right now.
00:18:13Toyota caught fuel hose as it exited.
00:18:17No damage, so I was right.
00:18:18The fuel rig operator, not a happy bunny at all.
00:18:21You could see that.
00:18:22I don't think he was complaining about them coming in together, I should say.
00:18:27But, yes, the fuel hose, he wasn't fully released when he was given the go,
00:18:32and that's very, very dangerous.
00:18:34You're talking fire with that sort of thing.
00:18:36Yeah, and I think what's happened there is the man with the board in front
00:18:40who's keeping track of calling the driver out,
00:18:42the driver will just be looking at him, really, and listening to his radio.
00:18:45He won't be focusing on anything else,
00:18:47and he's perhaps just called him out that little bit too early.
00:18:49The driver's done exactly what he's been told to do,
00:18:51but there's just been that miscommunication between the team,
00:18:55and that's the sort of thing you can't really risk having happen here.
00:18:59It has to be a well-polished operation between everybody in the team.
00:19:03That's what wins these races.
00:19:04The guy felled on board the Lotus-badged Lola here.
00:19:10And away he goes.
00:19:11Yes, Lotus incidentally announcing that they may well be sparking up a fully supported,
00:19:17can we put it that way, LMP2 programme next year.
00:19:20They've got a lot of ambition starting to be waved about here.
00:19:24Let's just hope that their troubles and travails are sorted,
00:19:28and indeed, likewise, Lola will have plenty of time to talk about that
00:19:32throughout the evening as this goes on.
00:19:35We have 23 hours and 22 minutes of racing remaining.
00:19:40Can you believe it?
00:19:41And the class leader is in P2, is onto pit lane as well,
00:19:47along with quite a few other contenders in P2.
00:19:50The second-place car, however, Olivier Pla,
00:19:53that is the Morgan with the Judd engine.
00:19:57That has stayed out for one more lap than, I think,
00:20:00pretty much all the other P2 cars.
00:20:03That's interesting.
00:20:04Just checking out some of the other leaders here.
00:20:06Aston Martin, in the hands of Mukher, is doing a great job at the moment.
00:20:11Ollie Gavin, keeping him very, very honest, it's a super battle.
00:20:15In terms of the whole field, it's positions 27 and 28,
00:20:19but that is for the GTE Pro-class lead,
00:20:23and Aston, at the moment, are holding on to it.
00:20:25As far as the AMs are concerned, it's double bubble-less.
00:20:28Yeah, it's also Aston Martin now leading the amateur class
00:20:31with Alan Simonson at the wheel.
00:20:33That's going to be fantastic for Aston Martin.
00:20:35And they'll be loving leading this race with both straightaway.
00:20:38The number three car, the number three Audi,
00:20:40coming into the pit lane right in front of us here.
00:20:42And it does appear that, yeah,
00:20:44I was thinking Mike Rockefeller was out yet, but he's not out yet.
00:20:47So we'll wait to see what's happened with the number four car
00:20:49as soon as we can.

00:20:51because they seem to be bringing that car back out of the garage
00:20:53as the two E-Tron Quattros were coming in.

00:21:52although I would hope most people wouldn't be slower than it.
00:21:55It's actually dropping down pace-wise amongst the pros here,
00:21:59and this doesn't bode well for a long run for the zero car.

00:24:02The three car has made an unscheduled,
00:24:05very, very quick return to the pits.
00:24:06They've changed all the wheels here
00:24:09and can't quite figure out why.
00:24:13Just a puncture, maybe?
00:24:14Possibly.
00:24:15They didn't change tyres on their first stop,
00:24:17which was only one lap ago.
00:24:19So, you know, sunny, Liz,
00:24:22it's fairly cool conditions here.
00:24:24The tyres will lose a lot of their temperature
00:24:26and they're really only working properly
00:24:28when they have a lot of heat in those tyres.
00:24:31They'll lose a lot of that temperature
00:24:33when they come in the pit lane.
00:24:34It could be,
00:24:35and you talked about it earlier on,
00:24:36the fact that the drivers all week
00:24:38have been having difficulty
00:24:39getting their tyres up
00:24:41to that optimal working temperature.
00:24:43It could be that.
00:24:44It could be a puncture.
00:24:45Yeah, I can't imagine they would have come in
00:24:47to change tyres straight after a pit stop
00:24:48this early on in the race
00:24:49unless there was actually a problem there.
00:24:51If he suddenly felt
00:24:52that something was going wrong.
00:24:54Also, don't forget
00:24:55that they have a full data system.
00:24:56Audi will have actual pressure sensors
00:24:58on all those tyres.
00:25:00So even from pit lane,
00:25:01they can probably tell the driver
00:25:03that they're losing pressure
00:25:04before the driver feels it himself.
00:25:06And it is a huge accident
00:25:07to have a slow puncture
00:25:08that suddenly bursts
00:25:09or goes wrong that way.
00:25:10So that possibly would happen.
00:25:12We won't know for sure
00:25:13without asking them,
00:25:13but certainly not what they would want
00:25:15at this stage in the race.
00:25:16And particularly now,
00:25:17that's both of the R18 Ultras,
00:25:19numbers three and four,
00:25:21making unscheduled stops.
00:25:23The number four car
00:25:23is back out into the fray,
00:25:25but it is,
00:25:27I think maybe it's just one lap down.
00:25:29Yeah, I think it's just one lap down,
00:25:30down in 20th place.

00:26:55this is not a strategy race.

00:30:34with the weather.

00:30:42we have been working
00:30:43all the testing days
00:30:44to have the cars
00:30:45on a setup
00:30:46that the drivers
00:30:47should be fine with.
00:30:49Under the conditions
00:30:50we expected,
00:30:52yeah,
00:30:53this with the puncture
00:30:54was for sure unlucky
00:30:55because we have found
00:30:56a very sharp stone
00:30:58in the tyre
00:30:58and this normally
00:30:59should not be
00:31:00on the racetrack.
