00:00Let's go to Robert in the city. Hi, Robert. What are you doing?
00:05Hello. Well, you know what? I carried three boxes of groceries up the stairs one-handed
00:11because I've been holding, but data not narrative. 17 passing first downs. 8 of 13, third down
00:20efficiency. 49ers are lucky to have Purdy. He is a gunslinger. And what do you think
00:29they're talking about in Baltimore? Not good, right? Or probably LA with the Chargers. Probably
00:36not that good. And look at the distance on the passes. You know, everybody had a yardage
00:47or a pass over 20 yards. Not, you know, not real common yesterday. So anyway, Purdy's fine.
00:54He's absolutely fine. We're very lucky to have him. But it's going to be interesting
01:00next week or Friday after the Ram game because they may hit a buzzsaw. So we'll see. Next
01:08week is going to be the telltale. That's for sure.
01:12Well, except for he may not play, Robert. Like, it's certainly trending in the direction
01:17that we may get another Mac game on Thursday night. I bet we don't. Well, I bet we don't.
01:25Why do you say that, Robert? Well, you know, I don't have any data. It just intuition tells
01:32me they would have already bagged it. And you know, what's happening in practice today?
01:38Are they practicing? Well, no, they don't. They don't practice on Monday. But what they do
01:42is a simulation and then send out a practice report and their simulation said that Brock
01:49would not have practiced today. Well, I guess we'll see about tomorrow. But, you know, I
01:56think, you know, he was in until the end. He was in until the end. So, you know, if it were
02:04lingering, if it happened earlier in the game, I think somebody would have noticed. And I think
02:11somebody would have said something. And did he ever go in the tent? I mean, I don't
02:15know. No, he did not. Apparently. Yeah. Robert, thanks very much. All of this developed
02:20apparently late last night and into this morning when he reported the pain. Well, no, I guess
02:26the adrenaline went away. But he told them in Seattle, right? He did tell them, I guess
02:32at halftime, this isn't feeling good. But he went out there and he played anyway. But
02:37then, yes, it starts to flare up a little bit after the fact when you stop playing.
02:41But apparently he did not say anything during the game yesterday. It wasn't until last night
02:47that he got on the phone with Kyle Shanahan and said, this isn't feeling right.
02:50Right. And the short week makes it so it's really difficult to even figure it out because
02:55you're not going to put him through paces and full speed stuff. And you're just going to
02:59have to be able to examine it and see where the pain threshold is. And I do think in this
03:05situation, if it is a close call and if Mac Jones is maybe ready to go and he's on the
03:11the make-believe injury report as a full go. So he would have been a full go, which means
03:17if this stays the same, I think that he ends up being the guy on Thursday.
03:21You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HG1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station

03:29Odyssey app. Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios, 888-957-9570. The number will
03:35keep taking your calls. It's keep it a buck time. What do you want to say? Like, we don't
03:39need to really, we don't need to dance around this. What do you want to say about Brock Purdy?
03:45Let's go to diehard Niner fan in sack. What's up, Niner fan? What you doing?
03:51Hey guys, how you doing?
03:53Great, man. What's up?
03:54Well, kind of a depressing game yesterday, right?
03:58Indeed.
03:59It's kind of like, everybody's blaming Brock. I won't go there, even though I have lots
04:04of times. But, you know, everybody's making excuses. The whole team played crappy. But
04:09I think, you know, kind of repeating what Dib says, is Brock, when he knows that he doesn't
04:16have all the best players out there or his line's not blocking, he tries to do too much
04:20and forces passes. And that kills our drives. You know, he's going to do like three or four
04:27man coverages when there's an outlet right in the flat or somewhere else. And a lot of,
04:33you know, 22 analysts said, yeah, he could have checked down. And I don't care if he's
04:39checked down Charlie and we score a touchdown all the way down the field that way. Don't force
04:43it down because you throw an interception. Your possession's over. There's the game.
04:50I mean, he's still got time to improve. But even, you know, even like the greatest quarterbacks
04:53we had in Niner history, Steve Young, for example, he made that long run in that Minnesota
05:00game. You had Bill Walsh say, hey, great run. But you know what? You could have threw
05:04it down. You know, somewhere else would put it. Right. Same thing. Right. And if Brock
05:10would just listen to it, he even said, it's like, you know, I got to, I got to stop forcing
05:13the ball doing that. If he listens to himself, he'd probably develop into a great quarterback
05:17while he's got the skills. Yeah. Niner fan. Here's what I would say about that. And thanks
05:22so much for the call. Like it, it very much feels like, okay, so now, now we're going to
05:27come after some, I think it's a fair criticism to be honest with you, but I'm also mindful
05:32of like, okay, so now we're going to get mad at the quarterback for being too aggressive.
05:36We hate it when quarterbacks are like Derek Carr, which is just captain check down all
05:41the time. And, and you never really force things down the field. Like it's third and
05:46eight and you're accepting your four to five yard pass so that you can punt. Like you're
05:50not going to score a lot of points that way either. So it's really, really difficult.
05:55I, I'm not, I don't know where to put this blame. Cause I actually find this to be confusing.
06:00The bottom line though, for Brock Purdy and quite frankly, all quarterbacks, if your team
06:07cannot run the ball, you're in a bad way. You're going to have a really hard time executing
06:15your passing game. If you are consistently second and nine, third and eight, second and
06:21nine, third and eight, you're going to have a really, really hard time. And I don't know
06:26why a Shanahan Christian McCaffrey team is having such a hard time right now, ripping
06:31off five or six yards on first down, like was traditionally easy a couple of years ago.
06:37But as long as that's happening, I think you're going to keep seeing more turnovers from Brock
06:41Purdy. Unfortunately, I don't think that the things have to be necessarily connected because
06:45right now the Niners are third in the league in third down conversion. So they've been converting
06:50even when they've been behind the sticks. And yesterday I'm looking at the game log and
06:55there was a few of those where he had a third and seven and then CMC had his longest run,
07:0111 yards. So at times you are able to run it. Now, what you're not able to do is get that
07:06big dash run. And that's what Kyle was talking about today. They haven't had the big 30 or 40
07:12yard breakout run like ETN did yesterday, 48 to the house. And so that becomes a game changer.
07:18And if you start having those, then the defense will stretch a little bit. And also they haven't
07:23had that, the deep threat and you can't have a deep threat if you don't pass protect. So
07:28you were talking about complimentary football before, and the offense has to be complimentary
07:32to itself in that, okay, if you can't run it and you want to throw it, you got to protect.
07:39And if you can't protect, then you can't throw it deep. And if you can't run it, cause you
07:43can't block. Well, what are we doing that? Yeah. But I like to me that 11 yard run that you
07:47just mentioned is like, boy, that is revealing because why, why were they able to run on third
07:54and seven for 11 yards? Cause it's one of the few times in the game where the defense isn't
07:59keying on that. And, and right now we've heard it from everyone. They are absolutely keying on the
08:04run. They are daring the 49ers to do something, to take them out of that defense. And when you have
08:11an offensive line that is performing at a mediocre level, you have wide receivers introducing
08:17themselves to each other in the huddle and George Kittle, not in the game, that's going to make it
08:21really hard for your quarterback. Has Brock handled that? Well, maybe not, maybe not so far this year. He is
08:29also though playing through his own injury. So when you add that whole mixture together, yeah, dude, you're
08:35going to get something that's less than ideal. Like no question. Um, I don't know. You can be
08:41frustrated with the Niner passing game. If you want, I am way more frustrated with the 49er run game than
08:46the past game. Agreed. And I'm not frustrated in totality with it. I'm just looking at Brock Purdy
08:53in situations where he doesn't need to take the risks that he's taking. And, you know, you mentioned
08:59third and long, and I'm looking at the last drive that they had in the first half and they get it at
09:03their own 41 after the kick catch interference, passed a born drop, passed a CMC drop, and then
09:11Tonjes converts and then passed a CMC incomplete because of the pressure. Then Purdy ran for 10,
09:17then a false start. So even when they started to like clip some momentum together, then they had
09:23the hook and lateral, which got them deep. And then you had another drop, the low one to Juwan. And so
09:29they haven't had that consistent flow often enough in these games. Um, let's go to, uh, Gris in
09:35Concord next up. Hey, Gris, what you doing, man? Hey, what's going on? Gris, you there? Can you hear
09:44me? Yeah, we got you now. Yeah. Hey, how are we doing? Good, good, good. All right. So I did a
09:53terrible job with your screener. I think I got a better take here. Oh, nice. This is going to be
09:58brand spanking new material then. No, so, uh, I think, uh, yeah, Brock did not have a good game,
10:06right? Like there, he was off, you know, I, I think Shasky was big in the morning saying it,
10:11you know, he was clearly hurting. Um, but he had like, uh, I think up to 14 points, maybe up to 10
10:20points that, uh, that could have been scored, uh, because of fumbles that he didn't commit
10:26and, um, interceptions or drop passes. So, uh, that, that weren't his fault. So he potentially
10:37like was driving them down the field to score enough points to win that game handling. So yeah,
10:43he, he had a bad game, but, um, you know, if they didn't have those mistakes, they would have
10:50overcome that and still won and he'd have a bad game. And if he, you know, Brock looked a little,
10:54uh, rusty and he was haphazard at times, but Hey, they put points on the board. So you got to
11:01consider that. And then like what you're saying, Mark, about the run game, like when you're forcing
11:05someone to throw, they're going to, they're going to stack the backfield and you know, it's just a
11:11recipe for disaster. So how much of that can you, you blame on Brock? Right. So I don't know people
11:16overreact so badly and it's, it's wild. Anyone who says they'd rather have Mac Jones in over Brock
11:22party with a straight face. You know, I instantly question a lot about that. So you wish if you're
11:29that person on Thursday, Chris, and I, I mean, it's one thing, Chris, thank you. It's one thing to
11:33want Mac for a game. Yeah. Uh, if you want Mac for all the games I'm with Chris, I don't really
11:39understand where you're coming from on this whole thing. And my whole thing with Mac has been that
11:44I still think you can win games with Mac. And if you get to Thursday and Mac has to play,
11:49I think that you can still go out and win that game depending on how his knee is because
11:54they went out and they're two and O with Mac as their backup. It doesn't mean that if they beat
11:59the Rams that I'm going to be saying, tear up the contract and take the $90 million cap hit as
12:05soon as you can on Brock party, we're not going to get to that spot. I'm not going to get to that
12:10spot. I get it. I really do. Um, I actually see a common thread through all of the things that we're
12:16talking about today on a wild day in Bay area sports. When people see things go wrong, they look
12:24at the person who's right up front and they go, you're screwing up, but that's not what's necessarily
12:31going on. And maybe that person up front is screwing up, but so are all of the other people
12:37too. And a lot of it is out of the hands of that person up front. So I look at Bob Melvin
12:42and I look at Brock Purdy and to a degree, this is only half of you, but I look at Steve Kerr
12:50in this whole Jonathan Kaminga four-year experience. There are so many things going on
12:56and so many disappointing aspects of all of that with all three teams. But what do we do? Well,
13:03Brock, you make the most money. You're the quarterback, Bob, you're the manager. You're
13:09supposed to make sure that guys know how to run the bases. And, uh, and Steve, you're the one who
13:14puts people in the game, apparently by himself. You don't like, there's no discussion with anybody.
13:18All of these things are layered and absolutely none of them are all on them, but that's where
13:26people are going to look. And so that's, that's, that's my take on Brock. I can't defend what he
13:32did yesterday. He did not play well, but if, if, if this is the sole thing that you come out of
13:38yesterday with, then I would argue you are one of the people that they refer to as a hater.
13:44Well, and you're, I think somebody who doesn't understand the nature of football and look at it
13:49from the other side. If you're a Jacksonville Jaguars fan, do you look at Trevor Lawrence
13:54yesterday and say, yep, that's the guy. That's why we won. We won because of Trevor Lawrence. And
13:59we all do this where the quarterback gets the credit, the quarterback gets the blame, and it's
14:04always going to be much more nuanced than that. And if you look at the Jags yesterday, you would look
14:08at ETN with 124 yards and a house call. You would look at Washington with a kick return.
14:14for a touchdown, you would look in other directions, a defense that was nasty and taking the ball
14:19away. Then you might get to Trevor Lawrence, but for the Niners, especially when you've
14:23got this newly minted quarterback who had some mistakes, it's easier to put the blame on him.
