00:00Listen to this, and this is courtesy of our friend Vic Taffer,
00:04who is a Niner beat writer for The Athletic.
00:06I want you to listen to this paragraph,
00:08and then 888-957-957, and we'll take your calls right now.
00:13How would you like the 49ers to play this going forward?
00:17Check this out.
00:19He writes,
00:22Purdy is not healthy enough to be the team's emergency backup in L.A. tomorrow night.
00:30So he will not be the one, he will not be the two, and he will not be the three.
00:37He is not healthy enough to be the emergency backup tomorrow night,
00:42which underscores that his sprained big toe was worse than it seemed,
00:48coming out of Sunday's loss to the Jaguars,
00:51and that the 49ers are leery of it becoming a recurring issue this season.
00:59They are entering a rough stretch on their schedule,
01:02especially for someone dealing with a sore toe.
01:07And here's what he means by that, not just the opponents.
01:11Tomorrow night, turf.
01:14Then you get a week and a half off and a game on grass in Tampa,
01:19and then a home game against Atlanta, grass.
01:22But then you go to Houston, turf, and then guess what you do the week after that?
01:28Oh, no.
01:29Oh, you visit MetLife Stadium.
01:33The House of Horrors.
01:33In New Jersey.
01:35The worst playing surface in all of sports.
01:38Eh.
01:38I mean.
01:39New Orleans.
01:41Ah.
01:41I would say New Orleans is worse.
01:43Doesn't the data put it at MetLife?
01:45I'd have to look at injuries.
01:46The injury data.
01:47Per stadium, but.
01:47Those are the ones that have the really bad rep, though.
01:51Yeah.
01:51Okay?
01:51And they don't call it grass toe.
01:54They call it turf toe.
01:55You just had me thinking about that.
01:58Oh, I got a bad case of grass toe.
02:00Yeah.
02:00It would be like, is your toe high?
02:03Totally.
02:03Like, what is grass toe?
02:04Anyway, if you elevate Adrian Martinez from the practice squad tomorrow,
02:10which is expected, you're not allowed to do it again.
02:14You have to keep him on the roster the rest of the year, which obviously is not going to happen
02:18because Mac Jones and Brock Purdy are the quarterbacks of this football team.
02:23So, you're going to have a revolving door potentially at backup.
02:27So, riddle me this, Niner fans.
02:30888-957-9570.
02:34How would you like the Niners to play this?
02:37And I think that the options on the table are, look, got it out, you play in Tampa,
02:44and see what you get, or do you want to sit here right now at 3-1 and say to yourselves,
02:54hey, Mac Jones can at least keep you in this until the bye.
02:59I think the bye comes week 10.
03:01Am I right?
03:02I thought it was later than that.
03:03Oh, you might be right.
03:04Actually, it might be even later.
03:05Yeah, I've got it at week 14.
03:08Week 14, okay.
03:09You've got 13 games until you get the bye, then four after.
03:12Okay, all right.
03:13So, yes, because after that game at MetLife, they come home for the Rams, they go to Arizona,
03:19they come home for Carolina on a Monday night, that's Thanksgiving week,
03:22then they go to Cleveland, then they get the bye.
03:25But would you like to push this?
03:29Roll the dice?
03:32No risk it, no biscuit?
03:33Or is it, let's just give Mac, I don't know, a month.
03:41Do you want to give Mac October?
03:45And then see if in that month of October, which holds four football games,
03:51I think most rational people think tomorrow is going to be really hard to win,
03:56so let's pretend you come out of tomorrow 3-2, but then the rest of the month of October is going to,
04:04in theory, you're going to get some receivers back, you might get Kittle back,
04:08you might make a trade on defense.
04:11And then you'd have three more games, Tampa, Atlanta, and Houston.
04:15Can maybe Mac go 2-1 in those?
04:18And then you would come out of there, what, 5-3?
04:23And again, this is all so hypothetical.
04:27But can Mac win a game or two there, and you finish essentially the first half of the season,
04:34still in the picture, and then you've got Brock Purdy, in theory, feeling a lot healthier.
04:43I don't know.
04:44And obviously there's a middle ground to this too, but I don't know how you want to play this thing.
04:49Oh, I want to play it one game at a time, of course, and tomorrow will not be Brock Purdy.
04:55And then you've got 10 days until Tampa.
04:57And if Brock is good enough to go, like he was against Jacksonville, I play him.
05:02You play him against Tampa.
05:03Because if you lose to the Rams tomorrow, and that spread is 7-1⁄2,
05:08and the money is making it seem like it's going to creep to 8 before we get off the air,
05:12and it may go higher than that, or it may stick and stay.
05:15Who knows where it goes, but you're heavy dogs.
05:18It's already at 8.
05:19Got an update.
05:20It's at 8.
05:21It just hit 8.
05:21Okay.
05:22At least in one book.
05:24Yes.
05:25And we usually use DraftKings, right, as our book du jour, book of choice, whichever one.
05:31Or FanDuel, yeah.
05:31Fine.
05:32Either way, you're heavy underdogs.
05:34And if you want to look ahead to Tampa Bay, I would bet you're already 3-1⁄2 or 4-point dogs in that one,
05:41pending Brock Purdy.
05:42Sure.
05:42So, you know, you might play all of October and go 0-4.
05:46Now you're 3-5, and okay, here comes Brock.
05:49He's ready to go.
05:50Ooh, you're in New York on the worst turf in football.
05:54And the toe is going to be a thing for probably a lot of the year.
05:58Turf toe just doesn't magically go away.
06:00So, I don't know, I wouldn't wait until November, because your season might be just about over by then.
06:06Well, it could be.
06:07Super interesting, by the way.
06:09FanDuel currently still has the Rams at 7.
06:11Okay.
06:11But the book that I often use has the Rams going up to 8.
06:16So, it'll fluctuate.
06:17You know what that is.
06:18Yeah, it's a fluctuation sensation.
06:20It's a fluctuation sensation, it is.
06:22Cha-ching!
06:23And by the way, Tim Roy on the show tomorrow, right here on Willie and Dibby.
06:28DraftKings is at 7-1⁄2.
06:29John Avello, friend of the program.
06:31So, you know, it's just moving depending on where you shop, but it's moving in a direction where money's coming in on the Rams.
06:38Yeah, of course.
06:39Coming in hot.
06:39Of course.
06:40The Niners, like, the perception is they've got no players tomorrow, and it's not a completely incorrect perception.
06:46All right, so what do you want the Niners to do here?
06:49Taylor in Petaluma, thanks for the call.
06:51You're on Willie and Dibs.
06:52Hi, Taylor.
06:55Hey, what's up, fellas?
06:56What's going on?
06:57Hey, so, my thoughts are, you know, if Brock's healthy enough to play, he's got to go.
07:04You know, he's got to play.
07:06Whether we can blame the last game on his toe or just simply airmailing throws like our boy Jimmy Garoppolo did, then that is what it is.
07:14But if Brock's not healthy, we've got to ride back.
07:17We've got no receivers healthy.
07:18We've got KB drops as our wide receiver one.
07:23So, dink and dunk down the field with Christian McCaffrey and Jake Tongas and see what happens.
07:29Play some good defense, you know?
07:31Yeah, I mean, super tough assignment.
07:34Taylor, thanks very much.
07:35So, you're going to dink and dunk against a really good defense, and you're not able to run the ball.
07:40And I was looking at some of the advanced metrics earlier, and Brock is 18th in football and air yards.
07:47Mack Jones is 26th.
07:48So, you go from a guy who doesn't air it out in Brock Purdy through two games to a guy who airs it out even less with a receiving core that isn't that accomplished in this offense and a team that can't run the ball.
08:01I look at it the other way, actually.
08:03Yikes is right.
08:04But I look at it differently in terms of how to go about doing this.
08:09Sometimes, when everybody thinks you're going to zig, you've got to zag.
08:13Especially when you're in a nothing-to-lose underdog situation.
08:18So, you all want to dink and dunk?
08:19No, don't do that.
08:21I mean, Greg Cosell just told us if there's a weakness for the Rams' defense, it's their corners.
08:25Now, I want the ball out of Mack Jones' hands.
08:28I don't want him holding the ball back there.
08:30It's actually his bugaboo, and the Rams' pass rush is really, really good.
08:35But I would not be afraid to, dude, huck it down the field a time or two if you can.
08:41You're going to need some quirky big plays to happen if you're going to win this game.
08:46And by the way, Demarcus Robinson, dude, I love him.
08:50He's an underrated player in this league, and he is somebody who can stretch downfield.
08:55Dude, that's actually your, I think he plays the role, if you will,
08:59of wide receiver one tomorrow, even though it's only his second game.
09:03That's the guy who I want to be the focus of the passing game.
09:07Tonjes has shown that he can do some things.
09:10But, like, dude, you got nothing to lose.
09:13So, no dink, no dunk.
09:15Let's play football.
09:16And if you get sacked and you fumble and you lose the game,
09:19you get sacked and you fumble and you lose the game.
09:21I mean, Mack Jones may not survive the game.
09:24If you're talking about a young, elite Ram defensive front and a 49er offensive line
09:30that has struggled at times in run blocking and pass blocking.
09:34So, unless you want to go max protect and just send two or three guys down the field,
09:40then Mack Jones is going to be in a lot of trouble if you're going to try to seven-step drop it and air one out.
09:45No, I'm not talking about seven-step drop.
09:46Again, I want the ball out of his hands, but I don't want the whole thought process to be
09:50all my throws are within three yards of the line of scrimmage.
09:54Like, come on, let's ride.
09:55These guys are fast.
09:56Throw it down the field.
09:57You can do a three-step drop and still throw the ball down the field.
10:01I'm not asking for him to hold it back there.
10:04But, like, what do you get to lose?
10:07Everybody already thinks you're going to lose the game.
10:10Don't get him killed.
10:11That's not what I'm saying.
10:12That's what you have to lose.
10:13That's what I'm not saying that.
10:14Of course.
10:15There's a risk of that anyway.
10:16You're playing a football game.
10:17Of course.
10:18They're going to come get you now.
10:19They are, but if you can, you know, dink and dunk and get the ball out of his hands faster,
10:23that's going to give you a better chance to keep him upright.
10:26Well, we're brought to you by Fremont Bank here for you, here for good.
10:29888-957-9570.
10:32How do you want the Niners to play this Purdy thing going forward?
10:36He's not even good enough to be the three tomorrow.
10:39And the injury is being called worse than it seemed coming out of Sunday.
10:46Niners worried about it being a recurring situation.
