00:00105 when a bounce Detroit still back fit pop and R&B it's your boy Showtime Dizar
00:04I got a very special guest in studio with me today first of all he's one of the reasons why I do
00:09radio okay um I don't know if I ever told him that but this is one of the reasons why I do radio
00:14also uh we talk about radio in Detroit gotta talk about this guy because he's had his hand on the
00:20culture he's just been involved in so much in and outside of just like bringing 313 day which we'll
00:25talk about in just a little bit from some of your favorite interview with some of your favorite
00:29artists this ton of stuff man the one and only doctor what up man I influenced you to do this
00:36this what you doing now yeah I feel like I meant to tell you that but yeah I used to listen to you
00:42all the time growing up so this right here was a full circle moment man I appreciate it first of all
00:47thank you I appreciate you having me on man and how are you I'm great man feeling great you know it's a
00:53it's football season so you know I'm excited about that you know my son is a senior right now I cast
00:58tech so uh and this is last year which is bittersweet he graduates in December so man
01:05I've just been kind of wrapping my head around him being out the house I mean the grocery bill
01:09gonna go down a little bit but just wrapping my head with him being out the house in a few months
01:13man is is is bittersweet I'm not gonna even lie but that's all I've been doing man just kind of
01:18you know spending more time with family lately nice you want is this weird being on the other side
01:22of the mic well you know I'm interviewing people man so now you get to be in the hot seat uh not
01:28lately though because I you know I've been doing a lot of podcasting and you know a lot of questions
01:32that have been coming up so it's cool to kind of you know tell different stories uh that I've already
01:38been uh uh previewed to to to hear so it's actually kind of cool it was weird when I I interviewed with uh
01:46with Mason uh back in March because you know me coming up under him and watching him do his thing
01:54and me learning from him and then him interviewing me was kind of like wow this is crazy so yeah yeah
02:00yeah um you talked about this before but just in case people have don't know where'd you get the
02:05name Dr. Derry how did that come back man it was weird like I couldn't I didn't know first of all
02:11uh I didn't like my government name you know so I didn't I didn't I didn't go with that my
02:17government name is Darius Summers um I tried to go with Darius and then I got thrown into like my
02:25first ever shift was the quiet storm so literally I'm on here trying to sound sexy and it's Darius
02:33and here's your next song type and then you know one day I I just came up with Dr. Darius I was kind
02:40of you know Dr. Dre Dr. Darius Dr. Doolittle Dr. I'm a road I had a weekend shift and I I just
02:51rode it and I stuck with it ever since so it was like a roll the bowling ball it wasn't a strike but
02:57you know it was enough pins for me to just keep the name around yeah yeah and you know it stuck
03:00around um how did you get into doing the radio things I remember you saying something about you
03:06doing uh sports first right yeah so then how'd you get into actual hip-hop radio how did that go
03:11uh well in high school I hooped um I went to CMA communication media arts high school go pharaohs
03:18uh and you know we just got a basketball team we weren't that good at the time and I was on JV about
03:27the move with the varsity and um it was one of those moments where I felt like man do I want to
03:33just play and practice and then sit on the bench during a game and I think it was a senior night
03:40one night and um I was like well let me just play the music and you know announce the players
03:45so I did that and then oh she was doing the mason before yeah I was I was I was the PA announcer in
03:52high school and man like we almost won that game like we was getting smacked you know by other
03:57schools um and we almost won that game and people used to come to our schools to see it may have like
04:02I mean it was like 96 percent girls and four percent guys so all the guys played all the sports but
04:09anyway long story short uh I stopped hooping became the PA announcer uh then I took some extra classes
04:14where I was actually out learning how to be a play-by-play commentator for football games and actually
04:20won broadcaster of the year well sportscaster of the year and Mason was the keynote speaker
04:25so Mason kind of tell a different story but uh what happened was he was the keynote speaker and I
04:31always wonder like bro like who is you know his morning show like who is Doocy and Granny and like
04:37are you kind of like do you have a safe in there because you give away 98 every morning he was like
04:42if you ever want to see how it goes down just kind of pull up I'm like I'm gonna pull up I'm in high
04:47school like I can't just skip school but we had senior skip day so I didn't go to bail out with
04:52everybody else I went to the radio station I saw you know I'm thinking tune-up man is
04:56on top of the Panosco building doing traffic this man is sitting in the studio on the phone with a
05:00music bed behind it behind him and then you know as far as like the money he took like a newspaper
05:06and just put it up to the mic it was like 10 20 30 I'm like this dude nothing that I thought
05:11it's happening so it was the theater of the mind that really got me into it and uh after that I
05:15knew exactly what I wanted to do I went straight to Specs Howard got an internship uh with Mason at
05:20the time and um stuck with it 25 years nice you so you never decided to go back to like doing a
05:27sports thing until like later on in your career which we'll get to about the piston thing but you
05:31was like okay this is it the hip-hop radio is where I'm gonna stick I still stuck with sports but no
05:36not as not as much as I you know delved into uh the hip-hop and R&B uh radio world and you know I
05:43was coming up the ranks you know what I mean so I started you know part-time um then I was working
05:50overnights so that I was too late like man because overnights that's not a thing no more for real in
05:56radio but like did you have listeners for overnight absolutely plant workers overnight I'm talking to
06:02them all the time what plant workers calling in like yeah there's such and such shift we at JNAP we
06:07at we at SHAP we at you know so you know it was cool to talk to I mean I thought the same thing but
06:14the phone lines did light up when I asked my call for sure that's what's up something that people
06:19don't know that you created in the city of Detroit is not a huge thing okay 313 day you are the creator
06:26the originator the person who is the reason why we got 313 day shirts talk about that man what made
06:31you come up with 313 day um at that time at radio I felt like the city just wasn't together
06:38you know on so many fronts business wise we weren't kind of supporting each other uh music at the time
06:45definitely not um and I just wanted to see a day that we all just collectively came together and
06:52supported each other you know just to have that Detroit unity um that was the goal and I opened up the
06:58conversations that's the one beautiful thing about radio that I love is that you can open the phone
07:03lines and have a community conversation and and you know off that one topic hey if we had a day a 313
07:08day what would it look like and people was calling in and say you know let's support local businesses
07:13black businesses let's support our sports teams let's support our music artists and I was just
07:18thinking off the top of my mind I was like man it'd be dope if we had like an all Detroit show
07:23with all Detroit artists and uh a few years ago I got a chance to see that on 313 day man and it
07:30literally gave me goosebumps bro I was just sitting there I I ain't gonna lie but I wanted to cry I
07:35ain't gonna even lie but I had to be tough around them rappers right right right yeah you can't cry
07:39I got the goosebumps man and it was one of those moments like wow like we really did this you know
07:46we really came together as a city and we support each other we love each other's music look where our
07:50music scene is right now so uh it's good to see um you know even the hospitals have the born on 313
07:57day uh the Pistons played a game the start time was at 313 313 on 313 day so it's it's it's good and
08:06it just let me understand that the power of radio still work you know what I mean you did so well
08:11with the 313 day and still can do continuing to do things with 313 day that other cities started to
08:16do their own thing you got Flint doing the 810 day and I think St. Louis got a 314 day yeah did
08:22you feel a ways when you saw that man like yeah now y'all biting off what we doing not that one
08:27not that one like music you know when y'all still love music or a vibe or I waved and yeah that that
08:32kind of yeah that was low that that rubbed me the wrong way but no it was good it was again it was
08:38one of those moments where I saw the power of radio you know and and the ability to be a change
08:44agent in your market which was cool but no I didn't look at it as you know they stole it they
08:50bid it from us now music wise swag wise I'm like hey when you y'all don't wear minks down there like
08:55that now come on now it ain't that hot but you know what I'm saying right you get enough credit
09:00for creating 313 day or does that not you don't care about that at all I don't really care about
09:04that you know some people recognize you know I'm like this you know I don't mind new cars
09:13driving on a road that was paved you know what I'm saying like if that makes sense you know it
09:20was a dirt road we paved it and now people are and that's at the end of the day you want to see
09:26your community come together and that was it you know I go to Atlanta I know I'm in Atlanta because
09:30when I when I hear the radio and I go to LA I know I'm in LA Houston same thing sometimes I didn't get
09:34that in Detroit sometimes so I just wanted to kind of bring that vibe and that energy back to the city
09:41for the city so I'm cool with it you do a podcast um talking about Detroit Pistons now before we get
09:49into Detroit Pistons and everything what is the biggest difference in your opinion from doing a
09:54podcast and in the radio because there are two different vibes for people who don't know they do
09:58have two different or maybe they don't to you but what how they do yeah in my opinion I feel like
10:03radio is like in and out right different messages you know you you're selling um products um pushing
10:11concerts tickets and you in and out the song podcast you can literally you have to pace the
10:18conversation yeah and and you can talk about a lot and you're not just rushing in yeah what if I want
10:26and you out you know you literally can have a genuine conversation uh with folks instead of just
10:32kind of getting in and out that's what I love about the podcasting world for sure which one you like
10:36better or is there better for you um I like both but I like podcasting more you know I understand
10:45what radio does I understand the business um but podcasting is is a lot more funner in my opinion
10:54okay two more things man and I'm gonna let you get up out of here um let's talk about your piston
11:00podcast how did first of all how did you get involved with the Detroit Pistons doing all the
11:04things that you do with them how did that start um just being like an ambassador community partner
11:10uh at first um I know that I used to um help out Rick Mahorn with this uh know your black history
11:18uh thing I think he's going on 20 years with that but he gave away money scholarships
11:22um just being around the team community wise uh just being that face of the city and being able to
11:29you know take different players to different schools and you know even they might not have
11:35known the player but they know me or just to kind of bridge that gap just being a community um
11:41and then uh develop some really good friendships uh Rasheed Wallace is like
11:47my brother from another mother who you know kind of clicked when he first got here hung out ever since
11:53um and then just being around the team uh over the years just supporting him ambassador wise
12:00uh I had a conversation with um with some people in the front office and um we were talking about
12:06doing a podcast for a couple of seasons and um I really had time this past season and uh we just
12:14kind of got into it and it's one of those things where we just do behind the scenes interview uh
12:18ask the players different questions which is cool uh because you see the players on court but there's
12:23some different questions that you might want to ask off um that you see that you know that they're
12:29into off the court or um no that was cool um just interviewing the players um we do it in season
12:36and uh it's on youtube who was one of the most interesting that you interviewed so far
12:41you interviewed I see uh I think it was Stu I seen uh Beasley um was Ron Holland was he one of them
12:48yeah yeah so who did you talk to that you kind of surprised you or it was like he's a very
12:53interesting person I would say Ron and Beas you know I learned a lot from Beas uh Beas was probably
13:02my favorite one that you did because I didn't know he had ties to the city so that one yeah I didn't
13:05know neither yeah and I'm sitting there like I did all my homework but I didn't catch that part
13:10and I'm like what and I feel like that's why he played so well here man so like I hate the
13:15situation that he in but I was like okay yeah and I was watching your interview I'm like yeah that's
13:18a that was a good one yeah that's gonna blow over hopefully hopefully he'll be back with the team
13:22uh and shooting them threes and then and celebrating with a shimmy right right you know uh but he was
13:27probably the most interesting and Ron Holland I mean I feel like anybody that I don't know
13:30it's always my best interviews like I you know anybody out in radio land you do an interview with an
13:36artist and they send you this sheet it's like a one sheet of I don't need none of that if I don't
13:41know you those are my best interviews like ever right yeah I agree with that because then it's like
13:47when you gave me stuff that it's too easy um last thing well kind of um predictions for the Pistons
13:55now season about to get ready starting like what two weeks yep a couple weeks uh we got media day
14:01next week preseason uh I think a week after that my prediction is that the Pistons will do well I I
14:08can't I don't know what a lot of injuries in the east I think the team is gonna be good so
14:13how you what I know team gonna be good but how do you feel like I feel like we have a good core
14:20I'm glad Trajan uh he he bought the core back added some different pieces but I think we're gonna
14:26be pretty good this year yeah the playoffs yes second round yes we stay healthy I'm I'm I'm going
14:34second and and above um can we win NBA chip of course we can just got to get it done so I normally like
14:42to do my assessment after the first 25 games yeah me too because I like I like JB Bickerstaff as a
14:51coach I actually I'll take that back I love JB Bickerstaff as a coach I got a chance to see him
14:55behind the scenes talking to some of the players you know it's x's and o's but at the same time he's
15:01the type of coach where he pull you to the side say hey how you doing today how your family doing
15:06today what you working on personally yada yada just having those conversations and people in the
15:10front office as well so you know once you get that and you feel like it's not a lot of pressure
15:15man the locker room is fun you got a K a player like K Cunningham um all-star who's gonna come down
15:23and give you his best every night offensively and defensively passing the ball so I like our chances
15:29I'm not gonna even lie would you there for the playoffs game I was I was sick for the first uh
15:34two home games I scheduled something out of town but man it was electric oh my god
15:40I've never heard the pizza box aka Little Caesars Arena it was so loud and rock that loud like
15:49ever for a concert a Red Wings game a piston game like ever never heard it that loud bro it was
15:56amazing bro that was electric fun I can't wait till you had that back man all right tell everybody
16:00when they could find the podcast set and everything you got going on now here's a real last question
16:04real real quick look young Jeezy was here two weeks ago yep your son he was at your son high school
16:09talk about that real quick man before I let you get up out of here how what was that experience
16:13like I think you've met Jeezy a couple times right so y'all gotta relate to that your first time
16:16meeting him no no I didn't think so but I just wanted to make sure yeah nah me and Jeezy go back to like
16:22make sure power summit if y'all ever looked at a make sure power summit in the Bahamas is when I
16:31first met Jeezy and I reminded him that I reminded him of that uh when he came in and did an interview
16:38for a book I said bro I done been with you for your whole career from make sure power summit he said
16:45oh you met young Jeezy at the time yeah so um you know to me young Jeezy and to Jeezy to Jay Jenkins the
16:55author you know it was cool to kind of be on that journey with bro you know from uh and he genuinely
17:02loves the city so for him to come back and it's not just he's coming in to do a concert he's coming
17:07in to touch the city you know so for him to come in it wasn't just a school visit it was really a
17:13Henry Ford health fair where we got a lot of men to come in and get tested for various things that we
17:18normally just don't get tested for and then they actually gave away trips I don't know somebody won a
17:24trip anywhere in the U.S. with Southwest Airlines it was all types of stuff that they was giving away
17:31and you know Jeezy was just there to support you know the health initiative talk to the kids and let
17:36them know that they can make it in life no matter where you are in life you know your current situation
17:40is not your only situation type stuff um and that was it so it was good to for those young adults to
17:47get that experience to see somebody that they can kind of touch reach out and touch high five and not
17:53just see him on TV all the time and you know Jeezy down to earth so he ain't gonna just tell you
17:57nothing crazy he gonna give you the real so that was that was a great experience for the for the
18:00for the youth it looked and for Henry Ford health to come out and do what they did dope man one of the
18:05goats in radio man um I feel like people don't give him enough credit so I feel like I had to give
18:10him his flowers man because like I said man he was person that I was like he's dope and every time I hear
18:15him on the radio use the shazam that was a thing yeah I heard that so much man I wanted to steal
18:21I ain't gonna cap to you but tell people where they can find your uh the podcast what you got going on
18:25your instagram all that stuff man uh instagram you go there you find everything else uh dr detroit radio
18:31dr detroit radio thought about changing it a few times but I'm gonna keep it the same um you can find
18:37uh the youtube the podcast on youtube uh you can go to detroit pistons tv and then my podcast is
18:45launching it's the uh people mover podcast you can find out on youtube as well in a few weeks
18:49dr dairies is 105 when it bounce peace
