00:00weight class has served as a temporary stopping place on their way up to the more lucrative
00:05more prestigious heavyweight division but one exception to this rule is philadelphia's nate
00:11miller who has spent his entire 10-year career as a cruiserweight and is now considered one of
00:16the division's best tonight the wba 190-pound champion hopes to shine boxing spotlight on the
00:22cruiserweight and plans to extend his knockout string to seven in a row nate mr miller takes
00:27on number one contender ukrainian alexander kurov for the wba cruiserweight title live from fort
00:34lauderdale florida next on showtime championship boxing
00:39tonight we come to you live from the theater
00:57nightclub and concert hall in the beautiful and scenic resort city of fort lauderdale florida
01:02we give you a little local flavor as we make our way in a gorgeous balmy night in south florida the
01:08temperature a sultry 77 degrees with a slight breeze and an intimate gathering of about a thousand fight
01:15fans expected here at the theater the home for many live national concert acts and this evening the
01:21theater with its genuine nightclub atmosphere plays host to world championship boxing as the cruiserweights
01:27take center stage hello again everybody i'm steve albert welcome to fort lauderdale now originally
01:34tonight fabulous frankie lyles was scheduled to defend his wba super middleweight title against
01:39segundo mercado but the fight was postponed when lyles developed a bronchial infection during training
01:44so this evening we showcase the cruiserweights as philadelphian nate mr miller a career cruiserweight
01:50makes his fourth defense of the wba 190 pound championship against number one contender alexander
01:56gorov from the ukraine with that let me bring on my partners first the fight doctor ferdy pacheco and
02:02ferdy your take on the up and down career of nate mr miller well he is just that in and out up and down
02:08he loses his focus he doesn't prepare right for fights he seems to have one very good fight and
02:14then some mediocre and even bad fights then he comes back and puts on a great fight what we're
02:19going to see tonight we don't know till the bell rings what about the relative inexperience of
02:23alexander gorov and how that factors in well that's a very big factor for gorov not only is he
02:28inexperienced not only is he going to is he in america for the first time in his life completely
02:33different culture time changes and so forth but he has the distinct disadvantage of being
02:38against a loosey-goosey experienced american heavyweight who does have the rhythm of boxing
02:43and uh unfortunately that's a lot of disadvantage for gorov all right ferdy as we uh bring on our
02:49other partner here bobby chez bobby former wba cruiserweight champion so you know this division
02:55pretty well and i've often often heard you refer to it as the wasteland before the promised land
03:01you know somewhat of a wasteland before the promised land maybe a way station or transition period for
03:05light heavyweights on their way up to heavyweights stopping off at 190 pounds but for nate miller
03:10it's a little different 10 years his entire career has been at 190 pounds he is a true natural
03:15cruiserweight not big enough for a true heavyweight but steve he must go up all the great cruiserweights
03:20that went up the best cruiserweight of all time evander hoveld went on to become heavyweight champion
03:24of the world certainly no easy task but it looks like that's the path that mr miller has to take because
03:29the rivalries are just not there for him do you think he's ready to make that step you would think
03:33so after being a cruiserweight for so long well he's six foot two he's got a nice frame to build on but
03:38again he's still natural and comfortable at 190 pounds just a little bit shy of that so who knows if
03:43he can get up to 210 220 the heavyweights are big today we'll see we'll see if he eventually makes that
03:48transition to the heavyweight division bobby we look forward to your comments throughout the same for the uh fight
03:54doctor and we are set for tonight's feature the wba cruiserweight championship with nate mr miller
04:00defending his title against ukrainian alexander gaurav the number one contender well when you look down
04:07the list of world cruiserweight champions the names don't exactly jump out at you yet they're just a
04:12heartbeat and a few pounds away from boxing's most glamorous and financially lucrative division
04:17after all a fighter by the name of evander holyfield made the transition from cruiserweight champion to
04:22heavyweight champion quite successfully don't you think he's only the biggest name in boxing today
04:27but in reality the cruiserweight's generally gone her little respect they're perceived as a sort of
04:31temporary stopover point for those who can't make up their minds what they want to be heavyweights or
04:37light heavyweights so somebody created the cruisers even the name is ironic it sounds like they're
04:42cruising through waiting to be rescued from oblivion wba cruiserweight champion nate miller had these
04:49thoughts that's a good weight for me uh i think i can be a dominant force in that division you know
04:56a lot of the fighters are ducking me right now they you know they don't want no parts of nate miller
05:01so you know i'm gonna try to maintain this as uh long as possible that nate mr miller i mean that name
05:06shakes up a lot of people there so they rather take another way out uh instead of face the uh awesome
05:12power i have and you know the skills i have and you know they're scared of nate mr miller
05:19nate mr miller he's not flashy but he is supremely confident when he checks into the ring couple of
05:24years ago he looked impressive in his victory over all in norris for the wba cruiserweight title
05:29three fights later he struggled against james boss man heath it was just nine three and two
05:33does a lot depend on which nate miller decides to show up yeah i think nate miller's that kind of
05:38fighter that we call an in and out fighter one day he's great one day he's not great you happen
05:42to pick the two examples of the very best of uh nate miller and the very worst i mean those are
05:48two fights you look at him it's not the same fighter well that can be a great factor today i
05:52think he's up i think he's got confidence today we'll see when the bell rings and just for the
05:56record ferdy how about a prediction well i i see no way that that gurov can win i shouldn't say
06:01that because there's always a way that a boxer can win but it doesn't seem it seems like the cards
06:06are stacked against gurov he's against a champion that's in a natural weight who's confident who
06:11has good boxing ability and uh gurov i don't think has ever been in with somebody like this
06:16cards are stacked against him i would pick nate miller six seventh round knockout all right as we
06:21turn back to uh bobby chez must miller dominate gurov to get it to the next level you know stevie he
06:27doesn't necessarily have to dominate gurov gurov's a southpaw six foot five not every fighter is easy to
06:32dominate or easy to even look good against and a six foot five southpaw certainly could give anyone
06:36some trouble but he must dominate much of the cruiserweight division if he's going to be expected
06:41to do well as a heavyweight he's going to step up and he's not dominant here who's going to look
06:45for him as a heavyweight who's going to take him seriously and certainly a loss would make him
06:49rethink his plans altogether so what do you think is going to happen tonight i believe he's going to
06:52come out uncharacteristically fast i think he's going to start fast be serious get to work and i think he's
06:57going to stop guru in the mid rounds all right we'll see what uh what happens hedging just a
07:02little bit let's take a look at the challenger alexander gurov at the top of the steps he's
07:08getting his first shot at a world title he is the number one cruiserweight contender number four as
07:14rated by the ibf number one of the eyes of the wba the former european champion tonight his first fight
07:20on american soil
07:50southpaw alexander gurov who won his first 14 fights before suffering his first defeat back in march
08:13of 95 a loss he avenged and uh ferney miller says this will be a piece of cake what will gurov
08:18southpaw style put some problems for the muffins i think initially they will i mean southpaws always
08:25pose problems it appears for fighters but the guy of his experience miller's experience is solve it in
08:30three or four rounds and unless the left-hander really knows how to use that left hand it'll be a
08:35disadvantage for him because miller will figure out how to counter the right jab and then that could be
08:41curtains all right there is the ukrainian number one contender alexander gurov and now the champion
08:47nate and mr miller a true gentleman overcame adversity to become a world champ raised in
08:52three foster homes as a troubled kid off the streets of philly with boxing providing discipline
08:57and dedication one of the more overlooked champions partly because of his division and demeanor
09:09so
09:19so
09:21Let's go.
09:51Where have we heard that song before?
09:54The Philadelphia theme, Rocky.
09:57Hey, Bobby, is he asking for trouble if he keeps his left hand down again,
10:01just like he did in the first four rounds against James Heath,
10:03particularly against a southpaw like Gaurav?
10:06I think if he keeps his hands down, he's asking for trouble against any fighters.
10:08Now, Gaurav doesn't appear to be a monster puncher.
10:10He doesn't appear to be a one-punch knockout artist.
10:12But to keep your hands down, you're inviting trouble.
10:14Now, sometimes the fighters will do it to set a trap,
10:17but I think pay attention to what he's doing,
10:19keep his defense up and work and just work hard.
10:22All right.
10:23Alexander Gaurav, the number one contender against the champion,
10:26Nate Mr. Miller.
10:27Let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape.
10:30And the biggest disparity in age with Miller eight years older than Gaurav.
10:33At 6'5", three-inch height advantage for Gaurav.
10:36Very lanky.
10:36Miller two pounds under the weight limit.
10:39I guess we can call him Miller Lite.
10:40And a one-and-a-half-inch reach advantage for Gaurav.
10:42And the WBA rules for this championship fight.
10:45Scoring by the 10-point must system.
10:4710 points to the winner, 9 or less to the loser.
10:49Three judges will score the fight.
10:51No standing eight count.
10:52The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
10:54Only the referee can stop the fight.
10:56A fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round.
10:59If an accidental foul occurs before the end of the fourth round,
11:03the fighters rule a technical draw.
11:04If it happens after the end of the fourth, they go to the scorecard.
11:07So here at the theater in Fort Lauderdale, Florida,

15:17Entering the ring, wearing the colors of the Ukraine flags and trucks with yellow trim,
15:23hailing from Mariupol, Ukraine, and now fighting out of Paris, France.
15:28He weighed in at an even 190 pounds, with a record of 18 wins, one loss, and one draw.
15:35He has 13 of his wins coming by way of knockout.
15:38Please welcome tonight's challenger, the former European Cruiserweight Champion, and currently ranked the WBA No. 1 Cruiserweight Contender.
15:48Introducing Alexander Gouraud.
15:52And his opponent across the ring, the defending champion on my right, fighting out of the red corner, wearing dark blue trunks with gold trim,
16:06hailing from the fight town of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
16:09He weighed in at already 188 pounds.
16:13His record includes 29 wins, four losses, 25 wins coming by way of knockout.
16:20Tonight making the fourth defensiveest title.
16:23Please welcome the current WBA Cruiserweight Champion of the World, Nate, Mr. Miller.
16:31Once again, our referee in charge of this bout, George, a lot is on now to give instructions.
16:40Nate!
16:43Bring him on, bring him up.
16:45You're okay, man?
16:47Our gentlemen, we're going for the championship of the world, okay?
16:51You're professionals, I'm going to expect you to behave like professionals.
16:54Watch your low blows, watch your head in behind the head, okay?
16:57If you score a knockdown, you're going to be feathers in the corner, remain down until I call you out.
17:02Any questions from this corner over here?
17:04No.
17:04Any questions from this corner over here?
17:06Touch gloves, good luck to both of you.
17:08Touch gloves.
17:09Back to your corner.
17:11This ring is situated over a dance floor here at the theater in Fort Lauderdale,
17:15but I don't think we'll be seeing too much dancing tonight.
17:20Nate Miller, a slow starter, and with a win tonight, he's hoping for a chance at a big money fight.
17:25He wants to unify the title, become undisputed champ, and then move up to heavyweight.
17:30And Goura, well, it's not only his first fight in America, but his first visit to America.
17:35He's fought predominantly in Russia and in France.
17:37In fact, his manager is Russian, his trainer is French.
17:42Well, I asked Miller for his record against Southpaws.
17:44He said, this is the first one I'll knock out.
17:46Although, historically, a slow starter, Miller told us to take the fight right to Goura,
17:51and he'll press the issue, start early, and see if he can handle my rights and left hooks.
17:56We'll see.
17:56Right off the bat, as we have seen many times with Southpaws, the legs and the feet get tangled.
18:03Yeah, but he didn't start fast.
18:04As you were reading, he was reacting to what you were saying.
18:07It's like a strip.
18:07He started fast.
18:09He didn't know.
18:09He says his chin, Miller, will take care of the rest.
18:12He does have a good chin.
18:14Miller added to us, hey, ask Goura if he's ever fought a Philly fighter.
18:18They usually are extra tough.
18:20And there's a combination to the head by Nate Miller, who is starting uncharacteristically fast,
18:24and Goura just shoves him into the ropes.
18:26Nate Miller is uncharacteristically fast, and he is trying to get the job done, get it done right away.
18:32He still, even in being fast, is waiting and waiting, biding his time.
18:36I'm noticing Goura is frequently stepping on the left toe of Nate Miller and tripping him up.
18:42Yeah, that's going to happen all night long.
18:44And look at the disparity in size.
18:46Goura being a very tall kind of basketball-looking figure, as opposed to Nate, small, much more compact, and right now, much faster.
18:54And Nate is 6'2".
18:55That's not a compact person.
18:57Yeah, right.
18:57When you look at them together, Mike, you know, one guy looks much taller.
19:01He just looks like him.
19:02Goura, the lanky, rangy 6'5".
19:05He arrived from Paris on Tuesday.
19:09He's a natural southpaw, very quiet and cool.
19:11Said he trained hard at Louis Sakari's gym in Paris.
19:14He thinks his southpaw style will be annoying to Miller.
19:18Although he isn't coming in with any preconceived ideas that he'll adapt to Miller, whatever it takes.
19:23If it takes a fast start or a slow start.
19:26He's watched tapes of Miller.
19:27He feels very ready.
19:28And I've seen tapes of Goura.
19:29He has a long, slow jab sometimes as a feeler.
19:32And sometimes he stuffs it out there pretty good.
19:34Right now, he seems to be just doing the feeling.
19:36Trying to find the range.
19:38And he has a reasonable left hand.
19:39And a couple of straight rights by Nate Miller.
19:43And then he follows it up with a pair of left hooks.
19:46Nate Miller with an impressive flourish.
19:47Nice work by Nate Miller.
19:49He has no question about it.
19:50He's stepping on the gas.
19:51He wants his first round to be impressive to Goura.
19:54He knocked down James Heath in the first round in his last fight in Zeblin.
19:59And then he let him off the hook for six rounds.
20:00But he finally put him away in the seventh.
20:03One thing he's doing is reaching with his right hand far too much as Miller.
20:08This guy is so big, Goura.
20:09When he pulls back, he reaches way over.
20:12You can see Goura's bleeding from the nose.
20:13One or two of those right hands connected pretty cleanly.
20:16Right down the middle.
20:17There are two keys to southpaws.
20:18Right hand down the middle.
20:19And also left hook, not only to the body, but to the head.
20:2215 seconds and counting in the opening round scheduled for 12
20:26for the WBA Cruiserweight Championship.
20:29An impressive one for the champion, Nate Miller.
20:35We head for the bell.
20:47You've got to keep this left hand up.
20:49You can't go so low because he's a softball.
20:52He's waiting for you to do that.
20:54But you know what?
20:55Every time you did like that, he was under here.
20:57So next time you move in with your jab, next time you move in with your jab,
21:01you know what I want you to do?
21:03Bring the right hand and turn it up like that.
21:06Because he's going down just like you used to go down.
21:09Bring it up like that in the left hook.
21:11Okay?
21:11That's what we need.
21:13We need you to keep your hands up.
21:14Don't stand in front of them.
21:16Well, now you've got to watch it.
21:17Keep your eye on the feet.
21:19See the black foot right on top of the white one?
21:21That's what happens all night long when the left-hander fights an orthodox fighter.
21:27Later on, you'll see some good action.
21:29Gurav's trying to find the range, but Nate Miller's dumping that right hand right down the middle.
21:32There you see it.
21:33Right in the nose, a double right hand.
21:34Right hand lead with a follow right hand.
21:36He's going to work that right hand all night.
21:38Let's go.
21:38All right, round two.
21:39You heard Stan Williams.
21:40He's been with Nate Miller since Miller was 17 years old.
21:44Miller now 33.
21:46Well, the first round clearly went to the champion, Nate Miller.
21:49And let's see what happens here, round two.
21:51He not only established the speed, but he also established roughhouse tactics.
21:55Once he got inside, he kept on punching all over the place.
21:58He's like a fight more than a boxing match.
22:00Meaning, hey, you're here, pal.
22:01Fighting for the title.
22:02You're going to have to fight all the time.
22:03Miller, a full-time maintenance man, and coming out here.
22:09I'm sure he may tell you something about the Cruiserweight division.
22:12Has to hold out two jobs and a world champion, Noah.
22:15I don't believe he has to hold it.
22:16I think it's a job he wants to hold it.
22:18Nonetheless, we talked about it before, the Cruiserweight division, not the Glamour division,
22:22not one of the Glamour divisions, and all of the real talent.
22:25He said he likes to help people and fix things, and it's not about money.
22:30Right now, he's helping Guru to a bloody nose and some right-hand beating.
22:33Here's a wild swing and a miss by Mr. Miller.
22:37His fourth title defense won the title in July of 95, an eighth-round knockout of Orlin Norris in London.
22:45He's won six straight all by knockout and KO'd eight of his last nine.
22:49Nate Miller in the purple with the yellow trim.
22:52Oh, a straight right, and down goes Kurov.
22:55Oh, Kurov on the canvas on his back.
22:58Nate Miller was waiting on that one.
22:59He was ducking and trying to catch him coming in.
23:01He stepped in with the right hand, and I'll tell you what, Kurov, it landed on him clean.
23:05Down for only the second time as a professional,
23:08and let's see if Miller can finish him off now, and down he goes again.
23:13Uppercuts to the jaw, and Kurov does not know where he is.
23:17He can stop this.
23:17This fight's over.
23:18This fight is over.
23:19He's in serious trouble.
23:21You okay?
23:21Okay.
23:22Kurov says he's all right, and George Alonso, the referee, says,
23:26continuing, Kurov showing some heart, trying to fight.
23:29That goes down again.
23:30Three knockdown rule is in effect, and that is it.
23:34It is automatically over.
23:38And Nate Miller remains the WBA Cruiserweight champion.
23:41Well, he's had too much power for him, Steve.
23:43Just too big a punch.
23:45He's anyone who's going to start fast.
23:47Back to that first round, you saw he could zero in on that right hand.
23:50He's reaching a little bit, but when he shortened up and really started punching with it,
23:54it looked like, and Bobby, did you see him from one round to the other,
23:57his face all lumped up, and Kurov's face bleeding and really lumped up in just one round.
24:01What Nate was doing was trying to lay on the right hand clean,
24:04but he was trying to catch Kurov coming in.
24:06He would lean over almost to his side, his right hand side,
24:08almost backing away a little bit, to lure Kurov in,
24:11and as Kurov came to lean, he would dive in with that right hand and catch Kurov.
24:15Big and bigger puncher, having a great chip.
24:18He wasn't worried about Kurov's stuff, so even if he got caught leaping in, no big deal.
24:21But he caught Kurov coming in, end of the fight.
24:24Yeah, he's a guy that's fighting with one of those feelings that you can't hurt me,
24:28so I'm going to take my chances and nail you, and he did perfectly.
24:32Let's go back and look at the first knockdown and see how he committed to coming in,
24:37and the right hand just caught him just perfectly.
24:39Keep your eye on the right hand.
24:42There it is.
24:44You just can't land the right hand much better than that.
24:47Bobby, you take the second one.
24:49Bobby, you take another look at it, and you can see him.
24:52He'll lean just a little bit to his right and bend a little bit
24:54and then dive straight forward in.
24:56He'll drive him with that right hand.
24:56He leaned, bang.
24:58Again, that little lean threw off the timing of Kurov,
25:01and now we'll take a look at the second knockdown.
25:03I really didn't think he was going to get up from that.
25:04I thought he was so rocky.
25:05So let's take a look.
25:07Well, Miller goes right back to work.
25:08Uppercut, that's really two, and a hook afterwards.
25:12The hook was not necessary.
25:14That second uppercut was a killer.
25:15And he got up at eight.
25:18The end of the fight, the right hand was the key.
25:21Here you'll see a left hook.
25:22Excuse me, a left uppercut, a rising left.
25:23That really does the job.
25:25He had done so much damage with the right.
25:27Kurov just looking at the right, walked into two great left hands.
25:30So Alexander Kurov proving he is no match for the champion,
25:35Nate Mr. Miller, who retains his WBA Cruiserweight Championship,
25:38his fourth title defensive, he is now on for nearly three years,
25:42posing alongside Don King.
25:45Let's get the official time from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
25:49And still!
25:52Ladies and gentlemen,
25:54we have the time of one minute, 54 seconds of round number two,
25:59the three knockdown rule in effect.
26:02He's the winner by Weyau's knockout,
26:04and still the WBA Cruiserweight Champion of the World,
26:08Nate, Mr. Miller!
26:12So there it is.
26:17He runs his record to 30-4 with 26 knockouts,
26:22and now returns to the Abbotsford Housing Projects
26:26in the Germantown section of Philadelphia
26:28to his other job as a maintenance worker.
26:32If anything needs fixing, he's on call.
26:36He sure fixed things for Gurov.
26:38He called it a 52-sneak or something like that.
26:44A 52-fake, and when he put his left hand down,
26:47I don't know what 52 is involved.
26:49It might be a deck of cards something he's looking for on the floor,
26:51but either way, fake sneaker otherwise is great.
26:54Actually, it was great execution, good right hand.
26:56Well, Bobby, Nate Miller told us
26:58he's got a lot of tricks up his sleeve.
26:59He didn't need many tricks tonight, though, against Gurov.
27:02Just too much power, Steve.
27:04It was not just strictly the power.
27:05He has more talent.
27:07He has tons more experience at that level,
27:10much more seasoned, more mature fighter, just a better fighter.
27:15Now let's check out the knockdowns again.
27:18Three knockdown rule in effect,
27:19and Gurov went down three times in the second.
27:22Here you see a naval sitting on him for quite a while,
27:24sitting on him, waiting on him.
27:25You see him looking.
27:26He leans over and dives right in with the right hand.
27:29Gurov did not block it, did not see it coming.
27:32He didn't very clean.
27:33That's the one that really started.
27:34Nate picks right back up with the right hand.
27:38He comes right in with the uppercut here.
27:40He'll throw another uppercut, which really snaps Gurov's head.
27:42A right hook was almost an afterthought,
27:44because he was on his way to the floor.
27:46He was right hand happy and right hand busy in those early moments.
27:50And the last knockdown, Gurov, I'm sure, is looking for the right hand.
27:56And what happens is that left comes diving right up the middle.
27:59Right here you'll see a left uppercut.
28:02Well, it's a little later on coming.
28:04He still gets hit with a right hand, but that's the left uppercut that does the damage.
28:08You'll see another one there.
28:09Again, the right hand almost an afterthought.
28:11He can punch with both hands, Steve.
28:12It's pure and simple.
28:13And he can bang and he can take a punch.
28:15Gurov didn't have the power to give Nate anything to worry about,
28:19and therefore, no respect.
28:20All right, Seth.
28:22You'll see another one there.
28:23Again, the right hand almost an afterthought.
28:26He can punch with both hands, Steve.
28:27It's pure and simple.
28:28And he can bang and he can take a punch.
28:30Gurov didn't have the power to give Nate anything to worry about,
28:33and therefore, no respect.
28:35All right, Seth, for post-fight interviews,
28:37let's go up to the ring and the fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco.
28:39You certainly called it right in our interview yesterday.
28:43You said you come out and jump on top of him.
28:45You'll hit him with the right hand.
28:46You'll hit him with the upper guns.
28:47That's exactly what you did.
28:48I'd like to thank Jesus Christ, first of all.
28:50He made all this possible.
28:51And, you know, I looked at the guy tape.
28:53I knew he was a slow guy.
28:55I knew he started slow.
28:56He come out pouring with that little jab of his.
28:58Non-effective.
28:59And, you know, all I had to do was be patient and counter-punching.
29:02Did it bother you at all that he was stepping on your foot all during that?
29:05Not really.
29:06That's why I kept complaining to the ref.
29:07I said, man, let's get this right.
29:09And that's when the ref stepped in and said,
29:11OK, stop what you're doing and let's fight.
29:13And it seemed that you were not interested in what he had.
29:18In other words, it seemed like you said,
29:20I don't care what he hits me with.
29:21I'm coming.
29:23Not really.
29:23You know, I've been blessed with a good chin, a good punch.
29:26And my fight plan was to come out, use the jab, and work his weak body.
29:29You know, I looked at it and said, man, this guy got a frail body,
29:33so let me execute what I can to the body first.
29:35Well, now we're going to show you.
