00:00:00defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition while easy to define there's no formula for their
00:00:08creation some like layman brewster materialize unexpectedly chosen as an easy opponent for
00:00:17vladimir klitschko brewster surprised us with his toughness and shocked us with his power
00:00:22to emerge suddenly as a heavyweight champion others seem destined to be a champion cory spinks
00:00:31the son of leon and the nephew of michael grew up with boxing in his blood but pedigree without
00:00:38performance means nothing with all three welterweight belts and wins over ricardo mayorga
00:00:43and zab judah spinks has carried on the legacy of his championship family the term champion may be
00:00:51defined with words but it must be earned with heart and skill
00:01:21as evening approaches this city that lives by
00:01:51tonight we welcome you on this labor day weekend to las vegas nevada there's no better place for a
00:01:58newly crowned champion and an undisputed champion to showcase their talents
00:02:04america's fight night is pleased to be back at the state of the art event center at the mandalay bay
00:02:09the scene of so many world championship bouts it was right here in this arena where tonight's headliner pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year in boxing the crowd settling in for his first title defense it's fight night in vegas
00:02:26in our main event it's the wbo heavyweight championship as relentless layman brusher fresh off his stunning victory over vladimir klitschko squares off with former australian heavyweight champion
00:02:38collie checkmate mian of new zealand and in our co-feature they call him the next generation as cory sphinx keeps the famous family name alive tonight the opposition former world champion miguel angel gonzalez with sphinx undisputed welterweight title on the line
00:02:55hello again everybody steve albert ringside from las vegas well in today's boxing establishment even world champions find themselves starved for stardom tonight we feature two titleists who continue to fight for recognition layman brusher holds a share of the heavyweight title but that in itself doesn't count for much these days in april brusher was on the verge of a ko defeat when he scored a smashing knockout of vladimir klitschko if he continues to
00:03:25win in such spectacular fashion he won't have to worry about recognition any longer as for cory sphinx the wellaway champion is one of only two unified title holders in the sport the other of course bernard hopkins sphinx a pure boxer doesn't fight anything like his father leon or his uncle michael maybe further recognition will come if he modifies his cautious style or perhaps he just needs to keep winning time will tell and with that let me bring on my ringside partner al bernstein and al tonight the two
00:03:55champions in the spotlight cory sphinx's star for sure but what about layman brusher where would you put him in relation to the other heavyweight champions well ironically it was cory's dad leon when he won the title from muhammad ali who said i'm not the greatest but i am the latest well for layman brusher he is the latest of the current heavyweight champs to win a title but even at age 31 he still believes he can be the greatest at least of that group of four and tonight's performance is really important
00:04:25in beating vladimir klitschko that win came partially because of klitschko's stamina problems it was not really the breakout performance the boxing public had hoped to see from layman so tonight in this election year brusher starts his campaign to be king of the heavyweight division
00:04:42as for cory sphinx his established position today is in stark contrast to some earlier career roadblocks that included difficulty getting fights because of his softball style a serious shoulder injury and a bad decision in his first title trial he persevered through all of that to live up to his famous name
00:05:02all right both champions are in the house and with that al how would you capsulize tonight's two world championship bouts well you know both of these champions are heavy favorites but really both are looking for emphatic wins while brewster needs it to show he can be the best in his division cory sphinx is looking for bigger prestige he's already proven he's right at the top of the welterweight heap he wants to be considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in boxing today to stay in the running for that well you have to convincingly beat a
00:05:3233 year old veteran who was a champion in a lighter weight division and so for both these champions tonight is about marketing as much as boxing
00:05:41so the first of our world title doubleheader here at the mandalay bay in las vegas will focus on undisputed welterweight champion cory sphinx who will take on former lightweight champ miguel angel gonzalez in a matter of minutes
00:05:56well when you're the son of leon and the nephew of michael sphinx your name is instantly familiar to millions and in his last two bouts
00:06:05cory sphinx has shown that he has the game to go along with the name in consecutive welterweight title fights he's defeated ricardo mayorga and zab judah both of whom have been in the pound for pound top ten
00:06:17none the less it shouldn't come as a surprise that cory sphinx has been overshadowed by his unmatched pedigree
00:06:26he's one of only two acknowledged undisputed champions
00:06:35critically acclaimed for his skills yet welterweight champion cory sphinx remains overshadowed by his famous pedigree
00:06:43both of them guys can fight i mean it's just an honor to possess those skills that's been passed to me
00:06:53the son of leon and the nephew of michael cory sphinx has established his own career
00:06:59winning the world title from michelle piccirillo and unifying it against the much heralded ricardo
00:07:05mayorga i think i can beat anyone you know um there's no doubt in my mind not one one second that
00:07:15i thought that um may other would beat me while he continued to build his resume by outpointing
00:07:22the talented zab judah he feels unrecognized and unappreciated i just stick to the rules and um
00:07:30performing the art you know and um the order of hitting and not get hitting um just show my talent
00:07:37his fighting style has hindered his popularity in a sport that relishes power sphinx prefers to outthink
00:07:46and outpoint his opponents ending less than one third of his fights early because a lot of people
00:07:53like um like to see a lot of knockouts and um and it's been brainwashed and people here and they
00:08:01they've kind of got away from what boxing is really really means the order it's coming back it's slowly
00:08:09making this move and a lot of people are starting to look at me and recognize my talent cory sphinx has
00:08:17adopted the nickname the next generation but when in the minds of the fans will he become the now
00:08:24generation i'm changing the sphinx jinx you used to be just uh overhand right you know um and you're done
00:08:32you know but uh i'm putting my own the spin on it
00:08:36well for just about everybody the name sphinx instantly sinks in for some boxing fans it takes
00:08:47a little longer to warm to cory sphinx style regardless he's proving that he has what it
00:08:54takes out to carve out his own niche yeah and you know he started creating his own identity really
00:09:00as a pro seven years ago with youth and speed as his major calling cards now three titles later at
00:09:06age 26 well he's still young and he still has that blazing speed but now he also has big fight
00:09:12experience now that trio of assets makes miguel angel gonzalez's task all the more difficult tonight
00:09:18gonzalez a former champion himself is a skilled and clever fighter but things will have to work out
00:09:24almost perfectly for him tonight and that includes his strategy
00:09:28against an older slower fighter combinations are the key for cory sphinx now nothing wide is called
00:09:41for in this match up the middle has always been the way against gonzalez when cory is at his best it's
00:09:46about hitting and then avoiding being hit this sequence is quintessential cory sphinx he lands the jab
00:09:53and then he will make his opponent miss and he will use his speed to get out of harm's way
00:10:03this is a very hard combination to beat
00:10:07it's always a good idea to use the double hook against the lefty and gonzalez can do that
00:10:20now sphinx has a quick lead left so gonzalez has to keep his right hand up and gonzalez has power in
00:10:25his right hand but it won't be easy to land that punch in an effort to land the right of course the
00:10:32jab is a help even against the lefty but no matter how he sets this punch up gonzalez may have to
00:10:38experiment to find the best way to land the right and a wider arc could be necessary to get this punch
00:10:44there he'll need it to win this match
00:10:47miguel angel gonzalez looking to become the first undisputed champion from mexico in boxing history
00:11:00but he is here perhaps more out of respect for his past than anything else in his prime one of the
00:11:05fiercest most durable fighters from south of the border never quite the same after moving up in weight
00:11:11the punishing loss to cost you zoo took its toll long stretches of inactivity non-descript
00:11:17opposition of late and he took way too many punches in his last fight whether he deserves
00:11:23this title shot or not al one thing's for sure probably his last chance well he's very aware of
00:11:28that and he says he's better prepared than at any time since he was champion in the mid-90s he's got
00:11:33one thing going for him steve he is six and oh never been beaten by a lefty and he worked with 17
00:11:39southpaws in preparation for this fight as he goes for his 50th win he still has the hunger
00:11:45and the will he says but you wonder if he still has the speed and the power so there he is former
00:11:54135 pound champion miguel angel gonzalez
00:11:58undisputed well the way champ elusive southpaw cory spinks in familiar territory this is where he beats
00:12:08that judah of course the great bloodlines
00:12:11as the crowd greets him on his way in not only the the son of leon and the nephew of michael but
00:12:21one of four boxing brothers older brother leon jr was a top st louis amateur
00:12:27one and always a pro when he was murdered in 1993 it has not been an easy road
00:12:33for the soft-spoken spinks who despite his success still has his detractors now what do you think is
00:12:41the criticism fair well i think not and not only has he beaten just about everybody he needed to in his
00:12:48last five fights he's fought all former or current world champions he's four and one against them
00:12:53and the one loss really he should have won
00:12:56people in america
00:13:06this
00:13:11i
00:13:18oh
00:13:20yeah
00:13:20yeah
00:13:23yeah
00:13:23obviously the crowd favorite and Corey Sphinx looking to bring back the old show dance fever
00:13:43he's pretty happy isn't he well while Sphinx insists he's not looking past Gonzalez he says
00:13:49he'd love to fight past Yazoo should Zoo get by Shambay Mitchell one of the more creative
00:13:58entrances into the ring people have accused him of dancing too much in the ring doing a pretty good
00:14:03job outside the ring he would make Fred Astaire very proud let's size them up as we check out
00:14:17the tail of the tape the biggest disparity as you will see in age where Sphinx is seven years younger
00:14:23than Gonzalez the height all even reached nearly the same and at yesterday's weigh-in Sphinx right
00:14:29on Gonzalez just a hair under the notable rule no standing eight count no three knockdown rule a
00:14:37fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of
00:14:42the fourth round the fights ruled a no decision if it happens after the end of round four they go to
00:14:47the scorecard so here at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas we are getting ready for Corey Sphinx versus

00:19:08in the Pelé Olimpia
00:19:10the punches here are good
00:19:13in a good clean fight
00:19:14remember guys
00:19:15I'm fair but I'm firm
00:19:16touch them up
00:19:17good luck
00:19:18looks like a classic bull versus matador scenario with the prevailing opinion that it will be one-sided in Spinks favor
00:19:28despite that Spinks trainer Kevin Cunningham a St. Louis policeman said he's more nervous about this fight than the Zab Judah fight
00:19:36because everybody expects Corey to win Gonzalez who says he's reinvigorated in excellent shape still has a lot of fight left is ready he told us he'll jump on Spinks from the start he'll keep the pressure on and not allow Spinks time to set up his punches the southpaw gets set against the conventional fighter Gonzalez who lands the first punch for the left hand
00:19:50even though we think of Gonzalez because he was a lightweight champion as a lightweight his last seven fights have been at more than 150 pounds so this is the first fight since 2000 which he's been down nice right by Gonzalez wow good punch
00:19:57and Gonzalez goes right to work with a flurry
00:20:22the southpaw spinks is a five to one favorite coming in and as you can very well see a boxer first and foremost as Gonzalez comes forward and tries to lure you into a punch-up
00:20:37but here at the outset
00:20:41break out break out
00:20:42the challenger Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:20:45who has the upper hand
00:20:47but it's early
00:20:49you can land a right hand against Spinks if you throw it in a little wider arc
00:20:54which I suggested that in the keys and that's exactly what Gonzalez has done and what for him so far is a very nice first round
00:21:04Gonzalez continues to come forward and put on the pressure
00:21:12body shots
00:21:13says his motivation is not funny he just wants to prove himself again
00:21:19as we reach the midway point
00:21:21as we reach the midway point
00:21:22a round one
00:21:23a terrific
00:21:24minute and a half
00:21:25for Gonzalez
00:21:26spinks starting to warm to the task now
00:21:31countering punch
00:21:32he's countering a little bit better
00:21:34that was a little bit better
00:21:37a little bit better
00:21:49as we approach the final minute of the opening round scheduled for twelve
00:21:53for the world welterweight championship a rugged first round for the boxer the southpaw
00:22:01Corey Spinks but now Spinks comes alive he landed with the right the last 40 seconds or so Spinks
00:22:07has moved to his right doing very good jabs and good straight left hands and now has
00:22:13gotten himself back on track
00:22:15and without question winning this first round
00:22:27backing Spinks up
00:22:32that was borderline got a caution from Joe Porto
00:22:37all right bring bring up bring up
00:22:39Gonzalez continues to target the belly
00:22:48big first round for the challenger
00:22:54early in the first round Gonzalez was very effective and you'll see him throw kind of a looping right hand that's the way you can land the right hand if you're a conventional fighter against Corey Spinks but Spinks later in the
00:23:24he's going to go around much more precise with his punching countering as Gonzalez came in there was a nice jab interestingly leading with the left
00:23:32and then coming back with a jab second which is an odd combination and you see the movement of Corey Spinks as well so a very good last 45 seconds for Spinks
00:23:40keep that stick on him when ain't nothing else going on
00:23:44he shouldn't be too slow he shouldn't be too slow he'd be waiting on the whole life
00:23:50Spinks always comes in with a set game plan that he usually executes very well
00:23:57do not look for him to engage Gonzalez in any form of trench warfare
00:24:03he will use the jab look to frustrate counter the next champion
00:24:07Gonzalez again
00:24:10but here comes Spinks with a very fast right showing his speed and quickness
00:24:15and the hand speed obviously is a big difference in this fight we assumed it would be
00:24:19and since that initial flurry by Gonzalez in the first maybe two minutes of this fight
00:24:26Corey Spinks' hand speed has become the major story he's throwing combinations and landing very well
00:24:31Gonzalez continues to chase Spinks all around the ring it's a big ring 20 feet by 20
00:24:42again Gonzalez landing with an overhand right and now going to the body
00:24:46see that's really the first goes overhand right he's thrown in a long time
00:24:50what he's been doing is throwing a right hand for the body Steve and leaving himself wide open for
00:24:54countering by Spinks he's going to throw that right hand and lead with it it needs to be to the head not
00:24:59the body well Gonzalez does not have the utmost respect for Spinks's power and understandably so
00:25:07Spinks with only 11 knockouts in his 33 wins so he is ready willing and able to get inside
00:25:17and do what he can we've seen a smidge less movement from Corey Spinks than we're used to seeing
00:25:22game he still is of course showing us lateral movement but just a little bit less
00:25:30it makes him 26 7 years younger than Gonzalez Gonzalez 11 2 and 1 in world title fights Spinks 3 and 1
00:25:39so gonzalez with a lot more experience but his time was in the early to mid 90s you're talking
00:25:47over a decade ago but you wouldn't know it from this attack over the first two rounds
00:25:52gonzalez missing wildly and here comes the quicker cory spanks back on the assault
00:26:05the aggression of gonzalez and the willingness of spinks to stand and counter has made this a very
00:26:12entertaining first two rounds
00:26:14right hand got in by spanks spanks beginning to land with more regularity looking a lot more confidence
00:26:28up on his toes but it's gonzalez who continues to unleash bombs to the body but missing with a lot
00:26:34of gonzalez gonzalez knows how to throw a fighter southpaw with those double left hooks he understands
00:26:41that spanks getting in with his quickness and so elusive now defensively like right there
00:26:48is
00:26:55oh
00:26:57oh
00:26:59Eric Jones, put more pressure on him, more pressure, keep your hands up, hit him at the
00:27:21body, hit him at the body, well things have gotten a little rough in there, a low blow
00:27:26at the end of the round by Gonzales, but he may have been responding to that, little elbow
00:27:31by Corey Spinks, he may be 26, but he knows all the veteran's tricks, the hand speed of
00:27:37Corey Spinks and the combination punching becoming a very important part of the story,
00:27:43and this, an evidence of that in round number two, a round in which Spinks came back to win,
00:27:47though it was still a competitive round.
00:27:52As we enter round three.
00:27:56Corey Spinks coming back well after a rugged first round.
00:28:04Looking a lot sharper now.
00:28:07All right, bring up, bring up, bring up, stand back, stand back.
00:28:16Mexico did not win any gold medals in the Olympics as far as boxing this year, and Miguel Angel
00:28:23Gonzalez says, when he wins Corey Spinks' three belts, he's going to bring them back to Mexico
00:28:30as if they represent gold medals.
00:28:33He's a very proud champion, and he has a lot of fans down in Mexico who have been very loyal
00:28:40to him.
00:28:40You know, good combinations by Spinks.
00:28:43Against Rafael Pineda, he fought not well against the former champion.
00:28:47Everyone expected him to dominate, and he said, I'll never be that lethargic again.
00:28:51He was worried, I think, in round one that he might have been coming out that way against
00:28:54Gonzalez.
00:28:56And he said tonight he wanted to put on a spectacular show, and ever since round one, he has really
00:29:04looked impressive.
00:29:06You know why this has been such a fun fight to watch so far?
00:29:09Gonzalez may be 33 and may have lost a step or two and a little hand speed, but technically
00:29:15his plan against the lefty is excellent, and so he is getting some things done.
00:29:23Much better, for instance, than Ricardo Mayorga, who fought Spinks.
00:29:29That was a tremendous illustration of a fighter making another fighter pay when he missed the
00:29:37Mayorga fight.
00:29:38Spinks did a great job.
00:29:39Most people thought he dominated that fight, although it was very, very questionable.
00:29:45Judgment by the judge.
00:29:46There's Spinks going to work.
00:29:52Both men, this is a joy to watch, because both men are doing exactly what they're supposed
00:29:56to do.
00:29:57Spinks is using a jab, just enough movement, good combination, and Gonzalez, for his part,
00:30:02is using the left hooks, he's throwing to the body, he's trying to looping overhand
00:30:06right, he's doing everything correctly, and that's why he's hanging in this fight and
00:30:09laying in some punches.
00:30:11And Spinks is an intelligent boxer.
00:30:13He's not a runner.
00:30:16He boxes with his arms and upper body, not really his leg.
00:30:21And he's not formally a torridly fast starter.
00:30:24Here's that double left hook by Gonzalez.
00:30:30Instinctively, he's doing it.
00:30:31The one landing at the body, he's missed to the head.
00:30:34Oh, what's the head?
00:30:34What's the head?
00:30:34Come on, what's the head?
00:30:35Come here with the heads.
00:30:37Once the fight gets going, though, Spinks does show who's boss in the ring.
00:30:42Oh, what's the head?
00:30:43What's the head, guy?
00:30:43What's the head?
00:30:46Tremendous hand speed.
00:30:47All right, bring him, bring him, bring him, bring him.
00:30:48It all seems to be coming to fruition here.
00:30:56I'm good.
00:30:58I'm just getting in my room.
00:30:59Yeah, because you're not hitting him when you should be hitting him, all right?
00:31:04He's walking in your range, and you're just letting him walk in there, and you ain't getting nothing off.
00:31:09Get him, get that shit off as he's coming to you, man.
00:31:12All right?
00:31:14All right?
00:31:16Look, you got to turn.
00:31:20Turn.
00:31:21Stay in the center of the ring.
00:31:22All right.
00:31:23Fighting a tight circle.
00:31:24All right?
00:31:25All right.
00:31:28All right?
00:31:29All right.
00:31:29You can't be letting him run off this place.
00:31:31When you have a left-hander and a right-hander in, feet can get stepped on, heads can clash, and they do there.
00:31:38Probably initiated a little more by Gonzalez, but I don't think intentional.
00:31:42No cuts, thank goodness, from that.
00:31:50Spinks has a tremendous amount of respect for Kevin Cunningham, a St. Louis policeman, former Army boxer,
00:31:57who opened a boxing gym in the basement of an old police building.
00:32:03And that was Cunningham giving really good advice to Corey Spinks,
00:32:06not happy with the way Spinks is letting Gonzalez walk in and load up punches without him countering him.
00:32:13So it was excellent advice from Cunningham.
00:32:15And an indication that they don't think Corey Spinks has his A game on board yet,
00:32:18even though he's doing a pretty good job.
00:32:21Spinks calls his training team the dream team.
00:32:24With Kevin Cunningham, former U.S. Olympic coach Kenny Adams,
00:32:31and one of the best cut men in the business, Jim Strickland.
00:32:35Double jab there by Spinks.
00:32:37And ironically, Adams coached the United States team in 1988.
00:32:40Gonzalez represented Mexico in the 1988 Olympics, so a tie-in there.
00:32:45Gonzalez was 112 pounds back then,
00:32:49and he lost in the semifinals to the fighter who eventually won the silver.
00:32:52This is really intriguing action.
00:32:54You know, good uppercut on the inside by Gonzalez.
00:32:57Both men are doing an excellent job here.
00:33:00Judah's hand, or excuse me,
00:33:01Spinks' hand speed is probably the difference, but boy, not by much.
00:33:08Beautiful shots to the head by Corey Spinks.
00:33:11Gonzalez has been down only two times in his illustrious career.
00:33:21You know, that was a superb combination by Spinks,
00:33:25and Gonzalez, he is just not able to hurt Spinks.
00:33:28He's landed now two or three right-hands in this sequence that were excellent,
00:33:31but not able to hurt him.
00:33:32And Spinks, although he's up against the ropes where you don't want to be,
00:33:37is winning this battle.
00:33:38Now he spins Gonzalez around.
00:33:47What's the head? What's the head of this guy, guys?
00:33:48I think they were telling us the absolute truth
00:33:50when they said Gonzalez has gotten himself in the best condition
00:33:53he's been in since the mid-90s.
00:33:54He couldn't fight at this pace
00:33:55and take those kind of shots from Spinks
00:33:57and still keep throwing if he wasn't.
00:34:00Granted, it's very early in the fight,
00:34:01but that's an indication.
00:34:03He fought at an unbelievable pace
00:34:05in his last fight back in late May
00:34:07at a bullring in Mexico City,
00:34:10a 10th-round TKO over a Mexican prospect
00:34:13by the name of Ernesto Carmona,
00:34:15but Gonzalez,
00:34:17particularly at this stage of his career,
00:34:19took way too much punishment.
00:34:22And he's now taking a lot of hits from Spinks.
00:34:25This is a Corey Spinks who is while he's moving
00:34:29and showing a certain amount of lateral movement
00:34:31and is happy to engage,
00:34:32and that's what's making this a very entertaining fight.
00:34:37Time.
00:34:42Let's go.
00:34:43Let's go.
00:34:45Let's go.
00:34:45Joe Cortez giving the Spinks corner a chance
00:34:48for Corey to get his mouthpiece back in.
00:34:52And the final seconds of the fourth.
00:34:55Hold it right there.
00:34:55All right, let's go.
00:35:00All right, time!
00:35:08Hit him in the body.
00:35:11Hit him in the body.
00:35:12Hit him in the body.
00:35:12sacrifice him in the body.
00:35:13Hit him in the body.
00:35:13Abajo.
00:35:14Go for the body.
00:35:16Don't let him hit you with the locker.
00:35:19Corey Spinks with Gonzalez attacking and very low used a series of uppercuts and combinations
00:35:34and then spun away. That is vintage Corey Spinks. And then he put himself back in the
00:35:40corner because he said, I counter punched well here against the ropes. Let's try it
00:35:43a little bit more. And the mouthpiece of Corey Spinks would go out. And really that was from
00:35:48a clash of heads. Gonzalez hit him with his head. And that hurt Corey Spinks. He got nailed
00:35:53right in the chin with Gonzalez's head.
00:36:00You heard the judging criterion called ring generalship. Well, Corey Spinks is in charge
00:36:08right now. Miguel Angel Gonzalez has the will and the spirit but just doesn't have the sharpness
00:36:16and the reflexes and the speed and quickness. He's getting beaten to the punch is no question
00:36:24but he is still landing a lot of punches. And the big question is going to be, he lands
00:36:31it over at right. It doesn't do any damage to Spinks. And the problem is Spinks can land
00:36:35a lot return. And Spinks just stands there and fires away. Gonzalez in some outstanding battles
00:36:44through the years. Challenge unsuccessfully three times with a 145 title. Went in some great fights.
00:36:57Great fight. There's that little counter right here by Gonzalez. It's been his one of the best
00:37:06things he's done in this fight. The press row story. They're all in unison.
00:37:12Hey, wait!
00:37:13Today, I've left you the first try. Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho. I gave Gonzalez the first
00:37:16round but I've given Spinks the last three, so I am at their two point good right now for
00:37:21Cory Spinks. Hey guys, get him out, get him out there.
00:37:25Raising some eyebrows in the first round. I thought Gonzalez had that round as well, although
00:37:29Spinks did come on in the second half. There's a straight left hand to the head by Spinks.
00:37:34Sphinx. Gonzalez nods his head, acknowledging, and says, all right.
00:37:41Corey Sphinx setting down on his punches much more now, and he is punishing Gonzalez.
00:37:48And he said that could lead to a knockout. He's not normally a knockout guy, but if you wear him
00:37:54down enough, it could happen. He's fighting a guy who's been in there with Oscar De La Hoya,
00:38:00Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar Zoo. He took a beating from Zoo a few years ago, and I don't think
00:38:09he's ever been the same since. Of Corey to the head by Sphinx.
00:38:19What a work rate here by Corey Sphinx. Gonzalez gainly fighting back. What a combination again
00:38:29of the head by Corey Sphinx. Well, the counterpunching of Sphinx has been very, very impressive.
00:38:35Most of the jab and the straight left hand, and occasionally mixing in an upper cut when
00:38:39Gonzalez goes low.
00:38:40Another dominant round for the champion, undisputed, battleholder Corey Sphinx.
00:38:59Oh, it's on!
00:39:00You started well, you started well there. This is what I'm going to tell you. You started
00:39:17well.
00:39:17You have to fight, you have to fight.
00:39:22You want to knock about. Don't go for a knockout. You have to finish him. Don't knock him out.
00:39:37You got to throw the upper cut. You got to be on top of him.
00:39:39You have to cut the ring.
00:39:44Everything is going to come in time.
00:39:57Carlos Rosales, interpreted by our Eric Jones, who returns to Gonzalez after several years
00:40:04away, was 41-0 with Gonzalez prior to the fight with De La Hoya.
00:40:09Yeah, an eight-year absence, and they felt that he would bring a lot to their game plan here.
00:40:15Truly, they did create the right game plan. It's just Gonzalez in his last few hours having
00:40:19a hard time executing.
00:40:25Particularly against the lightning-quick Corey Sphinx.
00:40:32Beautiful straight left hand there by Sphinx.
00:40:36Now landing almost at will.
00:40:40Corey Sphinx's jab has been excellent.
00:40:44In the first round, he threw it a little bit less, but since then, he's thrown it a lot.
00:40:48There he throws it to the body.
00:40:49Of course, if you're a boxer like Corey Sphinx, the jab better be there, and it is tonight.
00:40:54That sets it all up for him.
00:40:58Of course, his Uncle Michael was known for the Sphinx Jinx when he was a great light heavyweight.
00:41:06That was his right hand. Look at these punches.
00:41:09These sharp cross punches by Corey Sphinx.
00:41:14Of course, with Sphinx, the Sphinx Jinx is the left hand.
00:41:17He is much more of a pure boxer than either his uncle or his dad.
00:41:25Although, Uncle Michael, a good boxer, very good boxer, boxer puncher type.
00:41:29It's fun to see Corey Sphinx setting down on his punches.
00:41:34We don't see it that much against the welterweight that he believes can hurt him.
00:41:40We didn't even see it that much against Zab Judah, who's a junior, a welterweight coming up.
00:41:44Although, he did knock Judah down in that fight.
00:41:51Now, Gonzalez just missing wildly.
00:41:53There are welts around both of Gonzalez's eyes, which became apparent midway through the fifth round.
00:41:59We have a minute left in the sixth.
00:42:02The pace of Miguel Angel Gonzalez has slowed decidedly.
00:42:09And now he is not throwing nearly the punches he did earlier.
00:42:12He's still pursuing, but not really throwing many punches.
00:42:15Oh, what a left hand!
00:42:17A beautiful countering left by Sphinx.
00:42:20That just drilled Gonzalez.
00:42:26And a right hand by Gonzalez, but Sphinx unfazed.
00:42:30That's one of those overhand rights, the likes of which he landed in the first round or two.
00:42:35Sphinx's mouthpiece comes out again.
00:42:37And while he was trying to put it back in, Gonzalez landed in the overhand right.
00:42:42Yeah.
00:42:43Make it up.
00:42:44Make it up.
00:42:45All right.
00:42:46Get up.
00:42:47Call Fire!
00:42:48abroad in Canada
00:42:52All right.
00:42:58some fighters use that as a ploy to uh get a rest but it doesn't seem to be the case here
00:43:12spanks looks like he's just having fun now
00:43:20hey you gotta you you're working good but you can't be out there resting as much as
00:43:27you're resting because
00:43:37you gotta act like you don't want nothing close
00:43:44listen the left hand is working good for you okay
00:43:51cory spanks uh loses his mouthpiece in this sequence
00:43:55and then he's trying to put it back in and as he's trying to do it he gets nailed with an overhand
00:44:01right by gonzalez he was a little preoccupied with getting it back in and of course shortly
00:44:05after this the action would be stopped so gonzalez kind of seizing the moment but couldn't really
00:44:11hurt cory spanks with that overhand right
00:44:19round seven scheduled for 12 for the undisputed well-to-weight championship the southcourt corey
00:44:25spanks has had the upper hand since midway first round
00:44:35former lightweight champ miguel angel gonzalez frustrated for the most part another beautiful
00:44:39countering shot by spanks
00:44:45corey spanks of course is unified champion in the welterweight division he's the man in this division
00:44:51he sees a challenge coming up from costa zoo perhaps they they've already had talks uh they would love to
00:44:57see costa zoo come up and fight him costa costa zoo's watching this fight he's watching those right
00:45:04hands occasionally land from gonzalez and he may very well like the idea of that because he can land those right hands
00:45:11yeah that's the fight they really want with costa zoo in fact sue's uh manager glad
00:45:20wharton on hand to do a little survey the fight i'd like to say uh you know
00:45:26corey spanks is uh the boxer puncher zoo uh would be coming forward being aggressive and uh i think
00:45:33it would be intriguing they're not crazy about a second fight with jab shooter feeling that the 12th round
00:45:38knockdown on the first fight the only element that makes that a possibility right hand
00:45:44like corey spanks and that snaps gonzalez's head back another one it's a boxing clinic now and the jab
00:45:51of judas setting up all these beautiful straight left hands
00:45:58oh spanks landing and landing powerfully with both hands
00:46:08gonzalez and gonzalez if anything showing a lot of heart
00:46:18spitting blood now gonzalez
00:46:21zeb judo
00:46:23corey spanks convicted fight with judo corey spanks has never had a championship fight
00:46:28that was stopped before 12 rounds so for him if he could get a stop it somewhere along the line here
00:46:35and that is not out of the question of ways pepper and gonzalez it would be the first time he's been
00:46:38in the championship fights he's been able to win in less than 12. spanks now all over gonzalez
00:46:47as spanks hopefully awaits costa zoo we can't disregard shambay mitchell absolutely
00:46:53who will be in there against costa zoo on november 6th that's for sure that's for sure first let's see if
00:46:59who gets by shambay mitchell
00:47:01meanwhile a great finish for the seventh round by corey spanks punishing mcguelon gonzalez
00:47:13the one who waits wins the fight he has to wait
00:47:41you are not listening to what i'm telling you he is a champion
00:47:51don't try to kill him hit him closer up get close to him and hit him by the way
00:48:09ölpido
00:48:17it is diorama scheduled for 12 for the undisputed welterweight championship
00:48:20Corry Spinks continues to have his way it gets worse and worse each round for the former lightweight champ Miguel Ángel Gontález
00:48:41Spinks continues to land with the jab follows it up with the straight left moves around
00:48:50well that's dancing in the ring with perhaps an omen
00:48:55because he's been dancing beautifully around Gonzalez dancing circles around him all night
00:49:00you know we referenced Ricardo Mayorga who had fought Corry Spinks and of course he's had his travails in recent days but he is here in attendance
00:49:10sitting next to promoter Don King and you see him right there next to King watching the man that he lost his title to
00:49:18Friday too and he's supposed to fight Felix Trinidad in October and you'll find out whether that will happen due to his legal issues
00:49:26that is an upset that he is here because he has had his troubles with the law lately arrested yesterday on suspicion of rape
00:49:34and he is here in the first two or three rounds
00:49:38jeopardizing the fight with Felix Trinidad
00:49:42and that's another guy that Spinks said he wouldn't mind getting in there with for the big bucks
00:49:46if that fight comes about Trinidad wins after the coming
00:49:50these rounds becoming mirror images of each other with Spinks handling Gonzalez
00:49:54Gonzalez can't do the things he was doing in the first two or three rounds
00:49:58when he would get inside and dig left hooks to the body in the overhead rights
00:50:02even though occasionally he would land an overhead right like that
00:50:04he's not able to set these punches up because he doesn't have the
00:50:08really the will to do it
00:50:12wicked combinations opened up by Corey Spinks
00:50:16but a lot of bravery on the part of Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:50:22all right bring out bring out all right get in that corner
00:50:36time get in that corner come here tape tape let's go
00:50:46tough crowd out
00:50:48yeah really
00:50:50you know
00:50:58Miguel Angel Gonzalez this is a real critical time in this match
00:51:02I don't know what he can do to do better because
00:51:06he had the right plan or the best plan he could have
00:51:10in terms of strategy and it didn't quite pay off for him
00:51:12and it was the youth and speed that have done it to him
00:51:14so I don't know where he goes from here to try and get this fight going his way
00:51:18he had a great plan but I was going to say
00:51:22he's 33 he's way past his prime
00:51:24and he's fighting
00:51:26oh
00:51:28talk about
00:51:30time out time out
00:51:34one point
00:51:36one point
00:51:38one point low blow
00:51:40as if things aren't bad enough for Gonzalez
00:51:44Corey Spinks comes over towards us with his leather boxing trunks
00:51:50and he's trying to get himself back together
00:51:52to get himself back together again
00:51:56you got five minutes
00:51:58hey let's roll
00:52:00a couple of warnings

00:53:16You know, there have been no knockdowns thus far in this fight,
00:53:19but he could make a case for one or two 10-8 rounds
00:53:22in favor of Corey Spinks, the way he's dominated.
00:53:27Round 9, scheduled for 12.
00:53:36Lively crowd on hand, very spirited.
00:53:41Despite the fact that it's been one-sided for Spinks,
00:53:44it's been entertaining.
00:53:45Oh, hold it, hold it, hold it.
00:53:48Don't pull the head down.
00:53:49Especially the first five or six, four or five rounds
00:53:52were well contested.
00:53:54About the sixth round is when Spinks really started to take control.
00:53:58Hold it behind the heavy hitting by Gonzalez,
00:54:01and they both hit on the break.
00:54:04Which was okay, because Joe Cortez wasn't there.
00:54:06Hold on, Lepio.
00:54:07Hold on, Lepio.
00:54:08Give me clean on, guys.
00:54:10In case you're wondering, Spinks has been down only once
00:54:12in his 35-fight career.
00:54:15Against Zab Jura, that 12th round.
00:54:18The last fight right here at the Mandalay Bay.
00:54:20Spinks dropped Zab in the 11th,
00:54:22and a furious finish, you'll recall.
00:54:25Oh, look at that quick,
00:54:26that quick left hand by Spinks.
00:54:28You don't even see it coming.
00:54:30It's like a blur.
00:54:31And Gonzalez would like to think that somehow as he got into these later rounds,
00:54:37he might get some help, but, you know, Spinks,
00:54:40all five of his championship fights have gone 12.
00:54:43He's not a fighter who normally gets tired,
00:54:45although Judo was able to get to him late in the fight,
00:54:48but still, he had a lot left,
00:54:50so it's not as if Spinks has any history of fading in these fights.
00:54:57Beautiful defense by Spinks,
00:54:59although that punch somewhat telegraphed by Gonzalez.
00:55:03Well, Corey Spinks reminds me so much
00:55:05of a middleweight of days gone by, Michael Nunn.
00:55:08He was a left-handed stylist.
00:55:10He was just really, really hard to beat,
00:55:12and that is, Corey Spinks is going to be a load full
00:55:14for any welterweight that gets in there with him.
00:55:17Yeah, and he was brilliant defensively like Spinks,
00:55:23had hand speed,
00:55:24and Corey Spinks is tough to deal with for anybody.
00:55:27The chance of Corey ringing out from this crowd.
00:55:32Again, Spinks content to be along the ropes.
00:55:34Doesn't seem to hurt him at all.
00:55:36In fact, he's the one with the advantage.
00:55:39All right, get him on, get him on, get him on, get on.
00:55:42Mostly arm punches from Gonzalez.
00:55:44That's part of the reason why, even when he's landing,
00:55:45they're not having a huge impact.
00:55:49And, you know, Gonzalez has landed a lot of body punches
00:55:52in this fight.
00:55:53You want him to do that, of course, to slow Spinks down,
00:55:55but they're not having that kind of impact,
00:55:57and we're already into round nine.
00:55:59Spinks looks as fresh here at the end of the ninth
00:56:03as he did early on.
00:56:09Gonzalez continues to come forward.
00:56:12This was one of his better rounds,
00:56:14even though I don't think he wanted to go
00:56:15with the better rounds for Gonzalez of the last four or five.
00:56:18Interestingly.
00:56:20Ooh, Spinks slipping on top of the show of Gonzalez.
00:56:24You've got to hit him with the uppercut.
00:56:37Hit him in the liver.
00:56:38Hit him in the liver.
00:56:42That's how you're going to win.
00:56:45He's already dead.
00:56:46He's tired.
00:56:48You've got to put pressure on him.
00:56:52Hit him in the liver.
00:56:53Don't do this shit, man.
00:56:56You fucking...
00:56:57If you want to,
00:56:59keep the man in the center of the ring, all right?
00:57:03You see, when you see,
00:57:05when you turn your left hand over,
00:57:06you're hitting him right on the money.
00:57:07Would you please give me a right hook
00:57:08with the left hand?
00:57:10Let's go.
00:57:14Sage advice from Kevin Cunningham.
00:57:16Even though Spinks counters well off the ropes, Steve,
00:57:20he still gets hit more there.
00:57:21So why be there?
00:57:24And let's see if we do see the uppercut from Gonzalez.
00:57:28As Carlos Rosales was pleading for him to do.
00:57:32Also, eight for the liver.
00:57:36Well, you know, those left hooks to the body
00:57:38have been excellent by Gonzalez.
00:57:40He's thrown good rights to the body,
00:57:41so he has executed that.
00:57:43But, of course, Rosales, we think,
00:57:45is just exaggerating a little bit
00:57:46when he says to this fighter
00:57:48that Spinks is dead over there.
00:57:49I don't think so.
00:57:51If he's dead, I'd hate to see him alive.
00:57:54Yeah, really.
00:57:54And I think so with Gonzalez.
00:58:01It's interesting, though.
00:58:02Gonzalez has been rejuvenating a little bit.
00:58:04He's actually throwing more combinations.
00:58:06He's getting a few more punches in.
00:58:08So he's actually made the last round of the half
00:58:10a little bit more like the first couple rounds
00:58:12that were competitive.
00:58:13Oh!
00:58:14All right, all right, all right.
00:58:16Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
00:58:17Well, this is no surprise that we've gone this deep.
00:58:21Spinks averages about six and a half.
00:58:24Rounds, Miguel Aher, Gonzalez close to seven.
00:58:28Spinks is a boxer first.
00:58:33And he's been controlling most of the action.
00:58:36And he's been dictating and setting the pace
00:58:39to his liking.
00:58:44They want, and you heard Kevin Cunningham say it,
00:58:47after you throw the straight left,
00:58:48please give me the right hook.
00:58:49The right hook was landing earlier for Corey Spinks,
00:58:52and they're probably a little perplexed
00:58:53that he hasn't gone back to that punch a little bit more.
00:58:57Especially over that left hook to the body
00:58:59that Gonzalez throws,
00:59:00which would leave that right hook open
00:59:02for Corey Spinks.
00:59:07We're in the 10th round of a scheduled 12-round
00:59:10unified championship fight at 147.
00:59:14The southpaw, Corey Spinks,
00:59:19the orthodox fighter, Miguel Aher, Gonzalez.
00:59:27Once again, Gonzalez taking a lot of shots.
00:59:30Go, go, go, go.
00:59:32Let him out, let him out.
00:59:34Way behind in this fight.
00:59:36Need something ultra-dramatic.
00:59:40Straight left, pounding.
00:59:43Gonzalez on the chin.
00:59:45And the Adams Apple area.
00:59:46And you know, even though Gonzalez has been hit
00:59:48with a lot of punches,
00:59:49he's never shown signs of being stopped in his tracks.
00:59:53And he's continually throwing punches
00:59:55and coming forward.
00:59:56So you can't really make any case,
00:59:57I don't think, for the fight being stopped,
00:59:59even though he's being hurt.
01:00:01Although now, he is being stunned a little bit
01:00:03by some of those punches by Corey Spinks.
01:00:07And also, I think Gonzalez is getting very tired right now.
01:00:12A tough Mexican warrior, Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
01:00:17It will take a lot to get him down.
01:00:29Let's quickly go to Jim Cray.
01:00:37Jim?
01:00:38All right, Don King has recorded...
01:00:40There you take a look in the stands of Mayorga.
01:00:44Ricardo Mayorga, he is here in the United States.
01:00:47He was in Nicaragua yesterday.
01:00:49He is being, right now, investigated.
01:00:52He has been accused by a woman of sexual assault and rape
01:00:55back in Nicaragua.
01:00:57Now, according to Don King, it is just an investigation,
01:01:00and this woman is making an accusation.
01:01:02There has been no charge filed.
01:01:04The authorities in Nicaragua have not pulled his passport.
01:01:07Obviously, that's why he's here.
01:01:09And there are no restrictions on him.
01:01:10And he will be able to proceed and continue
01:01:13with the upcoming bout against Felix Trinidad.
01:01:15Steve?
01:01:16All right, Jim, thank you so much.
01:01:19Ricardo Mayorga looking on.
01:01:24As we hit round 11.
01:01:25You know, that was wonderful refereeing by Joe Cortez.
01:01:38Gonzalez threw a borderline right hand
01:01:40that did straight just a smidge low.
01:01:42Rather than taking another point away,
01:01:44he gave him one more warning
01:01:46and said there'll be another point after
01:01:47because he knew it wasn't deliberate on Mayorga's part.
01:01:49Some less experienced referee would have jumped in and done it.
01:01:52I'm sorry, for Gonzales.
01:01:57Well, Spence has gone 12 rounds
01:01:59in four of his last five fights.
01:02:01He's four and one.
01:02:03The loss being to Michelle Pizzarillo
01:02:05in April of 2002.
01:02:10Gonzalez hasn't gone more than 10,
01:02:12since losing to Oscar de la Hoya
01:02:14in January of 1997.
01:02:18Felix Trinidad is the only one who
01:02:20and I haven't identified no ring.
01:02:22He's coming up next.
01:02:23Don't worry about it.
01:02:24Listen, he cut the broadcast.
01:02:25Yeah, for real.
01:02:27Wow.
01:02:28What hand speed by Corey Spinks.
01:02:30Lightning quick fists of Corey Spinks,
01:02:33and he is putting on a show.
01:02:34But you have to remember it's against
01:02:38the slow former champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez
01:02:42who's got the heart and will
01:02:46doesn't have the sharpness,
01:02:52the reflexes that he used to have.
01:02:55You know, before the fight,
01:02:56the keys to victory,
01:02:57two of the things I suggested you need to do
01:02:59is land those double left hooks
01:03:00and land the overhand right
01:03:02that he would throw with the wider arc.
01:03:03He's done both of those things
01:03:05and it hasn't been nearly enough
01:03:08to get him a victory.
01:03:11Partially because those overhead rights
01:03:13are not beginning to hurt Corey Spinks.
01:03:15They just can't be close to hurting him.
01:03:18And the left hooks have not been enough
01:03:20to slow him down in terms of movement.
01:03:24Gonzalez has won maybe one round the first.
01:03:29Holding and hitting there.
01:03:30He's, well, I'll tell you,
01:03:31it's been a cavalcade of those things by Gonzalez.
01:03:34You have to be fair and say
01:03:36he has bent the rules
01:03:36on four or five different occasions.
01:03:38And now he's trying the roughhouse tactics.
01:03:41Julio Cesar Chavez-like qualities in his prime.
01:03:45Look at this.
01:03:46Smattering by Corey Spinks,
01:03:48a barrage,
01:03:50a fusillade of laser-like punches.
01:03:53It's obviously a combination
01:04:08of the toughness of Gonzalez
01:04:10and the fact that Corey Spinks
01:04:11is a great fighter,
01:04:12but he is not a huge puncher.
01:04:14You don't get slack and stupid
01:04:28in round 12.
01:04:31We fight like round 12.
01:04:32I want round 12 like it's round 1.
01:04:35The whole three minutes.
01:04:38All right?
01:04:38You ain't got on the one.
01:04:39Yeah, that's right.
01:04:40All right.
01:04:41Good job.
01:04:41Good job, ref.
01:04:43You ain't got on a long time.
01:04:45No time, apparently.
01:04:45No nut.
01:04:47This right hand by Gonzalez
01:04:48strayed a little bit low.
01:04:50And remember,
01:04:51a point had already been deducted.
01:04:53Well, that was pretty low.
01:04:54A point had been deducted before,
01:04:56and Cortez did not elect
01:04:58to take a point away.
01:04:59He made one more warning,
01:05:01much to the chagrin of Corey Spinks.
01:05:03And I have to say,
01:05:03upon looking at the replay,
01:05:04it was lower than I first imagined it was.
01:05:07But the way to get back
01:05:09is with this kind of action
01:05:11from Corey Spinks,
01:05:12his hand speed and his combination
01:05:14is very, very special in this fight.
01:05:18Is it my imagination,
01:05:20or does the right telephone,
01:05:24the right shoulder of Miguel Ahelton
01:05:26got us look out of kilter?
01:05:27It really does a little bit.
01:05:29I don't know if that's...
01:05:30He's kind of moving his right arm funny,
01:05:32so it's conceivable that that's the case.
01:05:35I don't know.
01:05:36But they were applying the ice back
01:05:38to it between rounds.
01:05:39Yeah, it really does look odd.
01:05:41I saw it begin to develop
01:05:42in the last round.
01:05:43I don't want to say anything
01:05:44as of yet,
01:05:45but now it doesn't look right.
01:05:48And of course,
01:05:48that would make it harder
01:05:50to throw that overhead right.
01:05:58Bring it on, bring it on, bring it on.
01:05:59Bring it on, bring it on.
01:06:00Bring it on, bring it on, bring it on.
01:06:06Bring it on, bring it on.
01:06:08Gonzalez obviously needs a knock it off.
01:06:09But Corey Spinks just all over the place.
01:06:13Target practice coming at him
01:06:15from every angle.
01:06:23Crowd enjoying the tactics of Spinks.
01:06:27Kevin Cunningham told us before the fight, you know, this is difficult for Spinks because if he does dominate, as he has ended up doing, people will say, well, he'd be the 33-year-old former lightweight champion, so it's not that spectacular.
01:06:40Of course, if you stub your toe, you're really in trouble and you lose this fight.
01:06:45What this did demonstrate was that when he's in against a boxer that he believes doesn't have the power to hurt him, Corey Spinks can set down on his punches and do more damage than we're accustomed to seeing.
01:06:57He just didn't create a knockout.
01:07:03There goes the mouthpiece for the third time.
01:07:07Joe Cortez spots it, picks it up.
01:07:08That's the way for a low.
01:07:15Come on, let's go.
01:07:19Come on, please, man.
01:07:23Can't be penalized for that.
01:07:25It's so rare that you see a mouthpiece coming out that many times from a guy who's in charge of the fight.
01:07:32He's getting hit less often.
01:07:35There it goes again.
01:07:38He's slipping out of his mouth.
01:07:41What am I going to say?
01:07:45Dallas continues to misfire.
01:07:49And Spinks connects.
01:07:50It looks like Corey Spinks will have his six title fight go to the 12th round distance.
01:08:00He keeps the judges busy, but not much doubt.
01:08:08Six in a row, not six title fights, excuse me.
01:08:10But he's in great condition.
01:08:13He's looking so fresh, Spinks.
01:08:16Toying with Gonzalez right here.
01:08:19Just in another lead.
01:08:25As we head to the valve.
01:08:34Fire!
01:08:35Fire!
01:08:35Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:36Fire!
01:08:37Fire!
01:08:37Fire!
01:08:37Fire!
01:08:38Fire!
01:08:38Fire!
01:08:39Fire!
01:08:40Fire!
01:08:58A lopsided fight for Corey Spinks came in dancing.
01:09:06He danced around Gonzalez all night, he landed, but he also, as you pointed out,
01:09:10He did a beautiful job of setting up his punches.
01:09:16Showed some power.
01:09:17Congratulations, man.
01:09:18Thank you, baby.
01:09:19Good game.
01:09:20Oh!
01:09:21Oh!
01:09:26How about this?
01:09:32Ricardo Mayorga, who lost to Spanx a couple of fights ago.
01:09:36And here inside the ropes, we will look at Corey Spinks and the combinations that he used throughout this fight.
01:09:45That's what this was really all about.
01:09:47The hand speed and the variety of punches that Corey Spinks threw.
01:09:50This sequence using uppercuts, straight punches, body punches.
01:09:54It's always in combination from Corey Spinks.
01:09:57And, of course, he was able to do that against the slower, older Gonzalez.
01:10:01But when he throws these kind of combinations, Corey Spinks is very, very difficult.
01:10:06And the intriguing thing is, he was doing it as well at the end of the fight as he was at the beginning.
01:10:12Jabs, straight right hand, and blazing speed to Corey Spinks.
01:10:18Question now is, how would that do against the likes of Acosta Zou or Champa Mitchell?
01:10:25That will really be interesting.
01:10:30Jimmy Leonard Jr. ready with the scores.
01:10:33Let's go up to our ring announcer.
01:10:34Jimmy Leonard Jr.
01:10:35Ladies and gentlemen, after 12 rounds of action, we have a unanimous decision.
01:10:42All three judges scored about exactly the same, 118 to 109.
01:10:50All three in favor of the winner.
01:10:53And still the undisputed welterweight champion of the world, Corey.
01:11:00The next generation, Spinks.
01:11:05Corey Spinks does it in impressive fashion.
01:11:12The second successful defense of his three welterweight belts remains only the second undisputed champion in boxing today.
01:11:20The 26-year-old lifting his record to 34-2.
01:11:26And a disappointed Miguel Angel Gonzalez, the former champion, falls to 49-4.
01:11:32And won probably his last chance for championship glory.
01:11:35Yes, sir.
01:11:36It certainly will be.
01:11:37A round of way!
01:11:38A round of way!

01:18:39there's no dominant champion entrance into the heavyweight elite comes via revolving door in
01:18:44april vladimir klitschko exited and layman brewster made a most emphatic entrance previously dismissed as
01:18:50an underachiever brewster's knockout of klitschko as a shocker in that fight he showed a big punch and
01:18:56a strong chin at heavyweight those two attributes can take you a long way whether you're fighting a giant
01:19:01like vladimir klitschko or a former sparring partner like holly mehan
