00:00Marquez brothers, yes, Rafael Marquez set to renew hostilities, coming off the impressive performance against the South African last November.
00:10Well, the 29-year-old South African Salim, Mabuza, says he's ready to avenge the loss he suffered one month ago against Marquez.
00:18Mabuza earned his way back to the return title match with a really solid win in an IBF eliminator fight with Ricardo Vargas.
00:24Still, much of the build-up to this bout is centered on whether Mabuza's fight-ending cut in their last match came from a punch or a clash of heads.
00:39In round three of this match, with Marquez dominating the action, their heads would come together.
00:47And it seemed right after the fight that this replay might have indicated that this created the cut over Mabuza's right eye.
00:55But a close look shows that no blood was seen following this incident.
01:02And as the round continued, well, still no blood.
01:05But later on in the round, it would be the left hand of Marquez that would, in fact, do some serious damage.
01:17This punch landed right above the eye.
01:22And as the action continued, we'll see a trickle of blood that could be detected coming from Mabuza's eye, and he kept blinking.
01:30Moments later, in his corner, Mabuza's right eye shows the effect of that left hook.
01:37Clearly, blood is flowing.
01:40And in the fourth round, there would be more left hooks to reopen the cut.
01:47And the blood flowed freely.
01:50And in the process, the cut widened.
01:53Eventually, referee Norm Budden would step in to stop the action.
02:03And he would ultimately take the advice of the ringside physician to stop the match.
02:09And it ended up a TKL win for Marquez.
02:12So, referee Budden appeared to be right, despite the loud protests of Team Mabuza, who you see right there.
02:32Understandably, they wanted the no decision, which would have kept the South African undefeated.
02:36Now, silence Mabuza, who got his unique name when his grandmother told his arguing parents to be quiet after he was born.
02:45A very proud and poised guy from harsh and difficult beginnings.
02:49Basically, growing up alone in the ghetto during the apartheid era.
02:54His mother, a maid.
02:55His father, not around.
02:57He survived on his grandmother's pension.
02:59Learned to fight in the streets.
03:00Tonight, a long way from that despair as he gets his second opportunity in a world title, Al, and a chance for redemption.
03:09And this particular world title shot is worth to him.
03:11He actually turned down a shot at the WBA title sweep.
03:15And instead fought not IVF Eliminator simply because he wanted to avenge this loss to Marquez.
03:21He said the first fight, well, that was about survival.
03:25After he got knocked down early, late for the first round, in fact.
03:28And tonight, he says, this will be very, very different.
03:33He feels like he's more relaxed, more prepared, more acclimated.
03:38There's his traitor, Nick Durant, he got a glimpse of.
03:41Very outspoken guy is Mabuza.
03:44Gets through the ropes and into the ring.
03:50And what does he have to do to win this fight in Mabuza?
03:53Well, let's take a think of the keys to victory.
03:54In the first fight with Marquez, he traded hooks with Marquez, and it cost him.
03:59He can't do that again.
04:00Can't stand right in front of the power-punching Marquez.
04:02That would be a mistake.
04:04His good moments in the first match came when he counter-punched the attacking Marquez.
04:09And, Steve, I think he needs to do a lot more of that in this fight.
04:11Yeah, he's got to somehow find a way to neutralize the power of Rafael Marquez.
04:17And stepping out of the shadow of his more famous older brother, here he is, the champ, Rafael Marquez, just a year younger than Juan, considered by many the best bantamweight in the world.
04:35Quality KO wins over Mark Tusharpe Johnson, Tim Austin, and the polished and powerful performance versus Mabuza.
04:43Calls himself just a normal, regular guy.
04:46Loves hanging with his family.
04:47Owns a clothing boutique.
04:49Talks to his friends on the Internet.
04:51The only difference, he punches like a mule kitten.
04:53But he's also improved dramatically in the art of boxing, Al.
04:57He sure has.
04:58Nacho Beristain has made him not just a puncher, but an all-around fighter.
05:05Guy who thinks knockout in every fight with 31 KOs and his 35 wins, but also very intelligent and very, very skilled.
05:17And what does Marquez have to do to win this rematch?
05:21Well, for one thing, when he was overanxious, he gave Mabuza a chance to do some of that counterpunching in his first fight.
05:28Doesn't want to do that.
05:29He's a superb body puncher, Marquez, and that will stop the movement Mabuza wants to use in this rematch.
05:35And while he has a great right hand, for Marquez, I think it's the left hook that will work best as a power punch here tonight, just as it did in their first match.
05:44Trained in the high altitudes of Mexico, 15,000 feet above sea level.
05:48He actually came down here in Tahoe to 6,200 feet.
05:53Unbelievable.
05:54All right, let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape.
05:59And as you can see, every category except for their age, almost a mirror image.
06:03The only variation between the first fight and tonight's rematch.
06:07Marquez turned 31, which was in March.
06:08Yesterday's weigh-in, Marquez right on.
06:11Mabuza just under.
06:12Marquez says it's his last defense at this weight.
06:16And the key unified rules for this world title affair.
06:19There's no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
06:22A fighter cannot be saved by the belt in any round.
06:24And Mabuza, well acquainted with this.
06:28If an accidental headbutt causes a fight to end within four rounds, it's a no decision.
06:32After four rounds, they go to the scorecards.
06:34If a punch costs a cut and the injured fighter can't continue, he loses by TKO.
06:40So here at Montblou Resort Casino in Lake Tahoe, we're getting ready for the rematch between
06:48Rafael Marquez and Silence Mabuza for the IBF and Fringe IBO Bantamweight titles.

09:24losses.
09:25He has 31 big wins coming by way of knockout.
09:29In his three and a half year reign as champion, tonight he is making the seventh defensivist title.
09:35Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the defending IBF and IBO Bantamweight Champion of the World.
09:43Introducing Rafael Marquez.
09:54Once again a referee in charge, Tony Weeks now to give instructions, 12 rounds of championship
10:00boxing schedule.
10:01Venga.
10:02Yes sir.
10:03OK gentlemen, you received your instructions.
10:06You received your instructions.
10:11Right here is good, anything that's going to be low.
10:13Right here is good, and that's going to be low.
10:15Mira, aquà está bien, aquà no.
10:17Right here is good, and that's going to be low.
10:19Aquà está bien, aquà no.
10:20I want a good, clean fight.
10:22Obey my commands at all times, above all, protect yourself at all times.
10:26Escúchame, cuÃdate, listo, ready, let's go.
10:30Vamos.
10:33Marquez very confident he will have his way again.
10:36Mabuza with other ideas.
10:38Is this, in essence, round five?
10:40Marquez sparkled in November.
10:42The more experienced champ can turn the fight with one punch.
10:45Terrific fight.
10:46We saw the right hand.
10:48We saw the compact left hook that dropped Mabuza.
10:52Mabuza's strength, the hand speed and quickness,
10:54but he made the mistake of being too much of a target in the first meeting.
10:59He can't stand in front of Marquez and mix it up.
11:01He's got to move around and show angles
11:03because Marquez just has extraordinary power in both hands for a family.
11:08And the other problem for Mabuza is he just is a slow start.
11:12Durant and people in his camp say he just doesn't get off to quick start.
11:17So he's got to buy time in his first couple rounds any way he can.
11:22And yeah, Mabuza, he does have power, but not like Marquez.
11:26So he really shouldn't look to trade.
11:29Marquez started uncharacteristically fast in the original, very sharp and accurate.
11:34The feeling is, and this is to your point, Marquez will start fast again.
11:39That's what the Mabuza camp feels,
11:41because the weight issue has been difficult for him for his last three fights.
11:45And that the notion is he doesn't want to go deep into the fight,
11:50which could be a big part of Mabuza's strategy to test Marquez's condition.
11:53He doesn't want to go deep into the fight, but he doesn't want to go deep into the fight.
12:06Rafael Marquez with the red gloves.
12:10Isn't just a puncher, he's a precision combination puncher.
12:13Those slashing punches exacerbated Mabuza's cuts in the first fight.
12:21You know, they were banking in Mabuza's campanar
12:26that Marquez will be a little overanxious in some of his attacks.
12:30Has not been here in Rambuza.
12:32He's been very measured.
12:34Yeah, he's not starting quite as fast as he did in the first fight.
12:38And of course, late in the first round,
12:40he had Mabuza on the canvas with that beautiful jab,
12:44followed by the left hook.
12:47And a really disoriented, silenced Mabuza.
12:51Nice right uppercut on the inside by Marquez.
12:55You see the Marquez jab.
12:57One of the things that Nacho Beristain, who's just a wonderful trainer,
13:00has improved, or Marquez himself has improved by working so hard,
13:04is the jab.
13:04He's become much better with that punch,
13:06and it allows him to do things he couldn't do earlier in his career
13:09when it was just a big puncher.
13:15I'll tell you one thing, Mabuza,
13:17he's still standing in front of Marquez,
13:21like he did in the first fight.
13:23All he needs really is just a little bit.
13:27There's some lateral movement,
13:28but you see Marquez here in round one
13:30still finding the range with his punches,
13:32and he's showing us a...
13:34There's that strong jab to Marquez,
13:36it had to be.
13:37He's got to be, he's got to be,
13:37he's got to be.
13:38He's got to be, he's got to be.
13:39Oh, no, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
13:4120 seconds left in the round,
13:43and a breakthrough for Mabuza.
13:45Mabuza is running away at Mabuza,
13:48and Mabuza is in trouble,
13:51but he's punching back.
14:00Oh, no, no, no.
14:00That's their wake-up ball.
14:11Hey, you heard something?
14:13You're calling on a fight, my brother.
14:14Uh-huh.
14:16Give me that water.
14:20in and out use the ring don't stand with him okay toward the end of that round marquez
14:32heard him with a jab we've just been talking about the jab and that was so strong it hurt
14:37mabuza now marquez went in with some abandon and mabuza doing a lot of just clutching there to
14:43hang on but silence mabuza landed a couple of good punches including a really good left hook
14:49that was a good short left followed by the right mabuza has very good hand speed and it was evident
14:54there as he punched in desperation the light went on and both got into it towards the end of the
15:05first round so things getting dramatic and exciting here early just like in the first fight
15:11well just when it looked like mabuza was in dire straits able to hold his own he collected
15:22his thoughts and then able to fire back and and land effectively now the difference in that round
15:29than some of the rounds we saw in the previous fight was marquez had a really varied attack on
15:34through a lot of left hooks there were uppercuts straight rights the jab he's a varied attack for
15:39him yeah he was just coming at mabuza from every angle like an octopus here's a more straightforward
15:49attack missing with a sweeping left hook there is marquez mabuza now aiming for the the belly
15:58mabuza's main hope in this is to really uh use his hand speed and combination punches so far we have not seen
16:08as much as much of that as uh as he would like
16:22approaching midway round two scheduled for 12 for the ibf bantaway championship rafael marquez in the black
16:28back wearing the leopard is mabuza blood coming from mabuza's nose
16:38so the first sign of blood here in this fight
16:44mabuza just can't resist languishing on the inside and you can tell he wants to trade hooks
16:49the rule is if a fighter is hit below the belt and can't continue within five minutes he loses
17:13it's all right yelling from the corner silence five minutes telling him take as long as you want
17:19and it's the right way to do it so well you got any good recipes
17:26we could be here for a little bit as he uh sits and relaxes with this well you mentioned nick
17:31durant reportedly under fire in his native south africa the feeling that if he loses his reputation could
17:38plumb it he's just kind of he's all right yeah he's had a tough loss with cassius caloy who lost his
17:43title in the fight he was not expected to lose and um he ran of course one of the best known
17:48in south africa well not that much time taken five minutes so uh he's got a lot of
17:57scarring through the heart of silence just when i was getting thinking of a recipe
18:02hold it we may need it so round two continues babuza oh
18:10a left hand by marquez
18:12and it was a jab that set up the left tip that put me down in the first fight very effective weapon for
18:24my case there it is again
18:27shot down
18:40and landed upstairs to marquez's home
18:43Move now, we'll use these rounds.
18:56Run sir, run sir.
18:58Run sir, run sir.
19:00Run sir.
19:12Very low and created a big issue for, yeah, that was very low.
19:17Kind of in the thigh area.
19:20More inside.
19:22And 40 seconds taken by Mabuzza.
19:25Later on, that jab set up the right hand.
19:28And there had been a couple of good jabs before that for Marquez.
19:31Thunderous jabs.
19:32Not just rangefinders, but punches that really hurt Mabuzza.
19:37Hey, hey, hey, hey.
19:38Watch it very well.
19:41As Marquez gets ready, Dr. David Zavala in the Mabuzza corner,
19:45examining the damage there.
19:48So it's round three.
19:49It has been a tough go so far for the challenger.
19:52Silenced Mabuzza getting the second bracket, Marquez.
19:55Mabuzza fought four months ago.
19:58Marquez, the last fight was back in November against Mabuzza.
20:02Yogi Berra would say it's deja vu all over again.
20:05Because we're seeing a very similar pattern to the last fight.
20:08The only difference is Mabuzza hasn't been knocked down.
20:11And it's a dilemma versus a guy like Marquez.
20:13If you move to your right to avoid Marquez's right hand,
20:16you're exposed to his left hook.
20:18If you move to your left to avoid his left hook,
20:20you're vulnerable to his right.
20:21So both are very important.
20:23Don't repeat that for me.
20:26I have no idea what I just said.
20:28I'm going to send you a memo on that one.
20:30The problem is that he's in trouble wherever he goes.
20:34That's what I think.
20:35You know, and the issue for Mabuzza really is that, you know,
20:38Marquez is a long fighter.
20:40He gets that jab out there in the right hand.
20:42He can hit you at long range.
20:43And Marquez is very good on the inside as well.
20:45Now, there's where Mabuzza's starting to move his hands.
20:47He needs to throw a lot of punches and throw them quickly.
20:52The only one thing about this kid Mabuzza, he is game.
20:56Yeah, very much so.
20:57Wow.
20:58Now, if he can get Marquez to lunge after him,
21:01to really attack more, there he can land counter punches
21:04like that jab Mabuzza just landed.
21:06He's got to use that jab and that right more against Marquez.
21:10He may have already mentioned that, talking about Mabuzza.
21:13There's a nice right cross by Marquez to the head.
21:19Mabuzza offering back, but Marquez is able to avoid a lot of those punches.
21:24He got clipped Marquez at the top of the head.
21:26You know what Mabuzza's doing now?
21:28There's a bunch of pressure on the head,
21:30and that's what he wants to do.
21:32And then he's shot at this point.
21:34Mabuzza bloody.
21:37It's a fun round of boxing.
21:40See, there's the jab from Mabuzza.
21:42Apart from Mabuzza, when he throws combinations,
21:44he can get some work done in there.
21:46And remember, let's keep him tucked in our back of our head.
21:50Marquez is at trouble making the weight.
21:52He's moving up the next time out.
21:54They want to take this fight into the middle rounds.
21:56That may help them.
21:58And there's Mabuzza bouncing around, showing lateral movement, which is to his advantage against Rafael.
22:14Marquez shooting that jab, and then a three-punch combination by Marquez.
22:24Mabuzza missing with the left, digging into the body with the uppercut.
22:28And here's Mabuzza applying pressure.
22:30And here's Mabuzza applying pressure.
22:32He's on the right.
22:34Being packed up.
22:35Where's body work, Mabuzza?
22:36That could pay dividends later.
22:38That was a terrific sequence.
22:40Mabuzza.
22:42Looks great right now to the chest.
22:44Mabuzza has a much better round for the South African.
22:46Keep fighting.
23:08How are you feeling?
23:10Is it...?
23:14When Mabuzza goes straight up the middle and throws combinations,
23:18he can get some things done against Marquez.
23:20And look, even though those first punches missed,
23:22he was able to get on the inside and land some good punches against Marquez.
23:26So, Mabuzza needs to throw more than one punch at a time.
23:33Watching in the dressing room a very concerned brother, Juan Manuel Marquez,
23:38who is standing by for his fight later tonight.
23:41But he finds it very difficult to watch his brother fight.
23:47But he is doing it right there.
23:49Here we go, round four.
23:50This is really developing into an interesting fight.
23:53Toshio Barastain, talking to Marquez.
23:59Barastain with a great history of being able to transform straight-ahead brawlers
24:03into good tactical fighters like he's done with Rafael Marquez.
24:07Marquez, you know, in the seven and a half rounds that these two men have fought,
24:11that last one, by far the best for Silence Mabuza.
24:20It's not a good idea from the trade hooks with him,
24:22but when he throws them in combination, Mabuza can get away with it.
24:25And look at more movement from Silence Mabuza now.
24:28Not standing right in front of Marquez.
24:31So a sudden shift in this fight.
24:33Let's see if it continues.
24:34As we keep pointing out, Mabuza's team wants the Silence
24:40to try to take this thing as deep as he can, at least into the middle rounds,
24:44to try to wear Marquez out, because Marquez has been having trouble with the weight.
24:48There's a nice right hand by Marquez.
24:50The uppercut miss.
24:51Back comes Mabuza.
24:53The hand speed of Mabuza is making this right now.
24:56That's handling that flurry of whites, the most effective time, Mabuza.
25:01That one landed.
25:02Left uppercut, Graves, missed with the right.
25:09Mabuza's scoring more now.
25:10His connect percentage is getting high.
25:14And there's a right hand over the top by Mabuza.
25:17By a left uppercut.
25:19Missing Wilder with that looping left.
25:20That could be dangerous.
25:21And Mabuza's jab has become much more of a factor in this match than these last couple of months.
25:30But Mabuza on the balls of his feet, really bouncing around Marquez more flat-footed, as you can see.
25:43Mabuza, one thing about him out, in excellent tip-top condition.
25:47And that's one thing that kept him going after that first round knockdown in the first fight.
25:50But you can see what superb shape he is in here.
25:53And...
25:54To speak to that, Marquez also has a band-of-body attack, which will allow him to, to the state pressure, continue this movement.
26:09That's a great point, yeah.
26:15Things are starting to look a lot easier for Mabuza here, suddenly, after a very difficult start.
26:22Still has blood all over his face from the nose, but it doesn't seem to be stopping him.
26:27He scored by Marquez, but didn't have the kind of impact for as much as we're having earlier.
26:31It's a jab, beautiful jab by Marquez.
26:34It stopped Mabuza in his tracks.
26:36He has to regroup.
26:37And then he comes forward once again.
26:38Missed with another left.
26:42And he grazed it with the right, Marquez.
26:43Yeah!
26:50Hey, don't forget to catch this summer's hottest show, Brotherhood, Sundays at 10 p.m.
26:55If you missed any episodes, you can see it from the beginning with a special marathon, August 19th, starting at 8 p.m.
27:02I can't wait for that.
27:03Revisit some episodes on Brotherhood's good series.
27:06Very appropriate, given tonight's theme.
27:08Yeah, that's for sure.
27:09Silence Mabuza in round four showed us what can happen when you throw combinations and you're accurate with your punches.
27:23Getting Marquez against the ropes.
27:26Not everything landing, but he landed a significant amount of punches during that last round.
27:31And that was, I said the third was his best, but on the fourth was his best so far.
27:35I'll do that for you, boss.
27:44Gunza, stick to the plan.
27:45In and fucking out.
27:46Now, Nick Durant, veteran trainer, who's coached 58 South African champions, 15 world champions.
27:52He says Mabuza may be the best of all of his South African champions.
27:57He is a straight-talking, no-nonsense guest.
28:00Now, Nick Durant suggested, you may have heard it, stick to the plan, he said to Mabuza.
28:05And that's important because the danger for Silence Mabuza is that he can get forward into a slugging match with Marquez because he feels so well.
28:14He's still got to hit, hit, hit, move away, come back, flurry a little, and then get out.
28:18Letting his fist fly, this is not the same Rafael Marquez we saw in the first fight.
28:30Well, he was for over-out and three quarters.
28:34Now, we look at press row Tom Gardner from the Associated Trust by Cows of Nevada.
28:39Mario Serrano, Premier Round Magazine.
28:41So, after four rounds, they've got it as a majority draw.
28:44I haven't believed it so far.
28:46It's that close.
28:48Oh, Marquez digging that left hook downstairs, getting back to that body work a little more.
28:57Marquez was more aggressive in the first fight, as you point out, I think the word you used was measured early on here.
29:02More measured in this fight so far.
29:04But he can be explosive, and he can turn a fight with one punch.
29:09We know that about him for sure.
29:10Yeah, that's the caution that we want to give to everybody because there's no question Marquez can hurt you with a punch and absolutely change things.
29:18Good news is, I don't think the heat is a big factor here right now.
29:25It was stifling about an hour ago, but it has cooled off just a bit, low 70s.
29:31And it's fairly comfortable.
29:32Steve, do you get the same feeling I do that Marquez is almost being economical because you feel like maybe he's not sure he can throw a lot of punches every round and still be effective in the later rounds?
29:47You know, it feels that way.
29:49And that's where they're at a different size as opposed to the first one.
29:55To the forehand by Mabuza, and that got Marquez's attention.
30:02Again on the defensive as Mabuza swings for the fences.
30:06And here's a quick, solid right hand for Mabuza.
30:10And here's a quick, solid right hand for Mabuza.
30:13This is Al Mabuza now very confident.
30:17Mabuza brings up a good job, and it's firing the right.
30:26Bouncing around.
30:31Mabuza coming out of the darkness of the first round.
30:35He's going back.
30:40Mabuza's crossed to the corner.
30:47And he stays the way to the corner.
30:51Our translator, Felix DeJesus.
30:55You better throw the jab.
30:56You better throw the jab.
30:58Agua. Agua.
30:58Agua.
30:59Water.
30:59Water.
31:00No.
31:01How are you feeling?
31:02I'm feeling tired.
31:05You feelin' good?
31:12You gotta keep your hands up. You gotta keep your hands up.
31:15You know, a buzz change at the end of the round and one that,
31:18while Marquez landed some punches, that was a great uppercut on the inside,
31:22but it didn't deter Mabuza.
31:24And Mabuza was able to wail away and land a very good right hand
31:28right at the end of the sequence.
31:30There's the right that pushed Marquez back.
31:33The hand speed of Mabuza really is the headline in this fight.
31:37It was starting to be just a little toward the end of their first round.
31:44At his best, Mabuza is the complete package, and we're starting to see that here.
31:48Lightning-fast hand speed, as Al points out, throughout.
31:52Those fast combinations to the body. He's got heart, a good chin.
31:59And he's got power. He doesn't have the amount of power that Marquez has,
32:02but he does have decent power.
32:05He just made questionable decisions in the first fight.
32:08I think this thing is a combination of Mabuza fighting a smarter fight,
32:12as opposed to the first fight, and Marquez just not being the same kind of Marquez
32:16as we saw in the first fight.
32:17I agree. It's equal parts of both those things, and what it's all adding up to is,
32:21for Silence Mabuza, a pretty good effort right now.
32:25Now for Marquez, what does he need to do to get back into winning these rounds?
32:30Use the jab. It was a very effective weapon. He was hurting him with it.
32:33And get back to throwing the hook. He's not throwing that much.
32:36It was tremendously effective in the first fight, and he's not throwing it enough in this match.
32:42By the way, if it's not obvious enough that we are outdoors,
32:45that noise you may be hearing in the background is the wind whipping around
32:50and affecting our microphones.
32:53The wind from the west is 60 miles per hour.
32:56Delightly. It really is what it's turned into.
32:59What is a great setting out here.
33:01And a good crowd on hand.
33:03A little over 3,000.
33:06And an arena that seats close to four.
33:12And it is just an incredible center.
33:15Whenever Mabuza throws more than one punch at a time,
33:19it freezes Marquez.
33:21There's no blow by Mabuza.
33:23Mabuza.
33:25And now Marquez will have five minutes for the top.
33:28Let's get him.
33:29Here we go.
33:30Time in.
33:31About five seconds.
33:33It wasn't as drastic as the one that was offered up earlier against Mabuza.
33:39Mabuza is a personal trainer.
33:41He teaches boxing size.
33:43And you know some of his clients are looking at this rooting around.
33:46Oh, yeah.
33:48There's a left uppercut by Marquez.
33:50He's landed that punch a lot.
33:52But has been countered with the right hand by Mabuza over it.
33:55So he has to be careful about using that too much.
33:57There it is again by Marquez.
33:59And he missed it.
34:00He's enamored with that punch.
34:02And that's a dangerous punch right now.
34:04Marquez going for the body there.
34:09Mabuza still on the move.
34:11Marquez more stationary.
34:13Oh, nice shot.
34:17Left hand there by Marquez.
34:19That was Marquez countering.
34:22And he's not by nature a counterpoint.
34:24That's more like his brother.
34:25Yeah.
34:26MC-11.
34:27One by one by one.
34:28A great counterpoint.
34:32But Mabuza has some rock of the chance.
34:35Well, the difference is Mabuza backed him up after he had a big shot.
34:40And I think he must be playing a little trick on the line.
34:45But, please.
34:46Mr. Inspector, I've gotta get into the ring.
34:48The cameraman can't take over my job.
34:49Please.
34:50Cameraman?
34:51Grinch talking to The White House.
34:52The fight is the most important thing here.
34:55You're saying the cameraman.
34:56Yes.
34:57But please, Mr. Inspector, I've got to get into the ring, the cameraman can't take over
35:06my job.
35:07Please.
35:08Cameraman?
35:09Go and touch him.
35:10The fight is the most important thing here.
35:12Are you seeing the cameraman?
35:13Yeah, he's in my way, man.
35:14He's beautiful, son.
35:15He's beautiful.
35:16Here's where the left hand strayed low for Babuza.
35:25Babuza, and Marquez took only a short time to recover.
35:33This was a terrific exchange toward the end of the round.
35:35Those left uppercuts by Marquez, very effective, but you see Babuza coming back and landing
35:40that short chopping left to the chin of Marquez, and at the end of the round, another good
35:44exchange by both men.
35:46The difference is when Marquez backs him up this time around, Babuza comes back with his
35:51own shots and his own good combinations.
35:53What a great fight this is turning into.
35:55Terrific sustained two-way action.
35:56Now we can hear how intense things are getting in the corner with Nick Durant, who was parking
36:01out instructions to the marshal in the corner about the cameraman.
36:05He's just trying to do his job there with Babuza, and it's getting very hot, and I don't mean temperature.
36:10Nice right hand by Rafael Marquez, and we're heading into that part of the fight, you know, we're at the halfway mark of it, where we have to start paying attention to how these fighters are doing in terms of stamina, and also, and I've got the fight even, by the way, dead even, but we have to look at Marquez and say, okay, we know it's hard to make the weight, we know the next fight is moving up in weight.
36:47As you check out Presto, it's still a majority draw.
36:50Tom Gardner from the AP, Mike Hauser, Nevada Appeal, Mario Serrano from Cumia Round Magazine.
36:56In my score, as I suggested, 57-57, I have it a draw.
37:05The Mabuza jab has been much improved in this fight, and that's a big part of the team to get off some of those combinations.
37:13Remember, this is a rematch of a fight that ended in the fourth round last November.
37:20Mabuza, having the fight end on cuts, and it was through the TKO, Mabuza's first loss, and here it is again, and nine months later, looking for revenge, and he is looking to change the course of the fight is Marquez.
37:39And in terms of motivation that Mabuza feels, they feel very much that the cut is caused by a clash of heads, inappropriate stoppage, and as you said, he turned out a shot at the WBA club just to get back to this fight.
37:52So this is a motivated fighter, and he wants to beat Rascal Marquez very badly, and he's not how bad he is so far in this fight, but this is a good route for Marquez.
38:00Now, Mabuza passed up a title fight, passed up a lot of money, took the circuitous route to get back here to fight Marquez again.
38:09That's how much of an insatiable appetite he had to get this fight again, and he's not letting people down.
38:17Now, in this round, Mabuza's moving a lot, and he has not landed a lot of punches, and this round, he might be giving away to Rafael Marquez, and could regret that one.
38:28I'll tell you what, Marquez just listened with that right hand, it's just amazing.
38:36And that's a testament to Mabuza's defense.
38:39A couple of good lead right hands by Mabuza there.
38:42Is that enough to get this round back for him, I don't think?
38:46Nice exchange there.
38:50Now!
38:55Well, the weather is now 75 degrees, your temperature.
38:58It's just gone up a couple of degrees, the wind from the west at 16 miles per hour.
39:03But, in the forecast, possible isolated thunderstorms.
39:09Give me some water.
39:12You've got to throw, you've got to throw.
39:15You're throwing, but you can't leave him down.
39:18After the combination, immediately, your jab.
39:21Give him water to drink.
39:26Ready?
39:27Keep on jabbing.
39:28Keep on jabbing.
39:29Keep on jabbing.
39:30Come through with upper guard left hook.
39:31Side side.
39:32Upper guard left hook.
39:33Side side.
39:34Okay?
39:35Give him the mark.
39:36Give him the mark, please.
39:37Give him the mark, please.
39:38Come, champ.
39:39Come.
39:40So an appreciative crowd of 3,200 on hand as we enter into round eight scheduled for 12 for
39:56the IBM Bantamweight Championship here in beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
40:03Now, it's important to have a focused corner.
40:05Nick Durant has provided that for Mabuza.
40:09Not getting overly excited about the power and reminding him again there.
40:12The side-to-side movement's important, and it's suggesting an uppercut and a hook.
40:17Those dangerous points are sort of a job.
40:20He's getting away with them.
40:21And as we mentioned earlier, Durant a little bit under pressure from the South African Chris
40:27for the Cassius Beloit fight, they felt that he didn't offer the right technical instructions
40:33between rounds and Beloit.
40:35He won the count, and then two months later lost to a nondescript guy.
40:39And so they're really a little bit down on Durant, so if he can pull this one out.
40:44There's a lot of emotion going on here with Mabuza and Durant.
40:47Mabuza wants his, and Durant really wants it, too, for other reasons outside of just getting
40:55the chance to get his respect back from everybody.
41:00Mabuza is off to a very good start here in round eight after Marquez,
41:04I thought he had a good round seven.
41:06It's a combination.
41:13Mabuza wasn't out of the game's time.
41:17But it doesn't stop him.
41:21For the first time, Mabuza switches to the left-handed stance,
41:24he didn't do it all in his fight with Ricardo Vargas in the IVF Eliminator,
41:29but he is doing it here now.
41:32And remember what Marquez said, if Mabuza switches to left-handed,
41:35he's going to knock him out.
41:39Eyes back to right-hand.
41:40Now there is blood from under the left eye around the cheek of Mabuza.
41:45Mabuza.
41:46So here we go again, but it's not in a dangerous spot.
41:48It's under the eye.
41:50The cutting question, the first fight was over the right eye,
41:54which was very deep.
41:56And that's pretty much why they stopped him in the forward line.
41:59And, in fact, against Ricardo Vargas in his last fight,
42:02there was a cut over the right eye for Mabuza.
42:05So this continues to be an issue for him.
42:09This one is over the left eye, right of the cheekbone.
42:13So let's not get it into the eye.
42:16Unless, of course, a Marquez punch ropes it up into the eye.
42:20You know, here's where the skill level of Rafael Marquez,
42:23which is much better than it was in the early days,
42:25stands in a good start.
42:27He's in a fight that's really nice going back up.
42:29And, you know, he's using every cheek available to him
42:32to fight very expertly, and especially in this round.
42:35He's having a great round against Mabuza.
42:37Mabuza, as you can see, being a little more cautious here,
42:40understandably.
42:41About a second of round eight,
42:43and the tide is beginning to turn around here for Marquez.
42:48There's a kind of action.
42:50Look!
42:51Just before the man.
42:52A little step,
42:54running around here.
43:04Don't stop.
43:06No, don't stop.
43:07Huh?
43:08In, in, Roger.
43:09Okay.
43:18Silence, I've got to move now this round.
43:19Move this round.
43:20Move.
43:21What about the sun?
43:22Apply the hand.
43:23Black with the hand.
43:24Can I put it in here?
43:25Yeah.
43:26Yeah.
43:27Second shot!
43:28The end of the round, not good for Silence Mabuza.
43:29He's hit with the left hand, and got driven back to the end of this round with some good shots by Marquez, including that excellent right hand.
43:43And the versatile Nick Durant, really earning his money down because he's not only the trainer, he is Mabuza's cut man. So you have to deal with that. The doctor was in the corner again, checking things out. But the fight continues.
43:58It's a key juncture for Mabuza. He has not looked good in the last couple of rounds, and I thought for the first time toward the end of that last round, his hands were very low, Steven. He was getting hit with some big power punches. Very important that Mabuza get himself back in this fight during this round.
44:13And one thing that often keeps Mabuza going is his endurance, his conditioning is in fantastic shape. So we shall see if Marquez continues to wear him down and chisel away as he has been doing in the last couple of rounds.
44:41Here's press throw, and now it's a majority decision to Marquez. Two judges have it for Marquez, one even through eight.
44:50I've got it 77-75 for Rafael Marquez.
44:56So Marquez is starting to pull an inch away here. See where it goes from this point.
45:01Marquez comes to this point.
45:02I'm here!
45:03The one through at the end of that line.
45:04He has to pull an inch away from this point.
45:05Marquez comes to this point.
45:06Because Mabuza went twang in his last opening against Barget.
45:07The one through!
45:08In the last two!
45:09The one through!
45:10The one through!
45:11He's got it from Marquez out of the middle.
45:12He's got the position in some difficulty.
45:15But Marquez connected to right to the left.
45:16The left turn!
45:17Connected, a right, connected, right.
45:19I don't know, listen to you.
45:21The left turn.
45:23Finally, he's left in front of Braves.
45:25It landed against the group.
45:26And here's a good breakthrough round for Marquez.
45:29Round nine.
45:31And Mabuja answers back to these blows.
45:35Some punishing shots by Marquez.
45:36Mabuja couldn't make a precious shot.
45:47Mabuja, completely slow down.
45:59It's been on Marquez.
46:00How much does Marquez have left to throw for the rest of this round?
46:04He threw a lot of bombs early.
46:05He can keep this pace up for the last 45 seconds.
46:08Mabuja may come back a bit.
46:10As he punched himself out of Mabuja has shown before that he can come back.
46:14Well, is Mabuja resilient or what?
46:16I mean, he's taking some monster shots in this round.
46:19Incredible battle.
46:21It could be the result of so much adversity.
46:24Drawing out.
46:25So mentally tough.
46:27He is really eating some leather here.
46:32Marquez measuring him out.
46:3515 seconds wide.
46:37It's been a tremendous round for Mabuja.
46:40But, again, he's having his toughness and his will.
46:46And anxious Juan Manuel Marquez, who fights later, watching from backstage, so supportive of his younger brother.
47:06He's having his toughness in the last part of the round.
47:10I think he's having a tremendous pressure taken, given out by this man, Rafael Marquez, who answered all the questions we've ever had about how well he could stop him in the last part of the round.
47:34A courageous silenced Mabuja hanging in as long as he could.
47:44But Nick Durant said, you know what?
47:47I've got to protect him.
47:49So he stops the fight.
47:51And Mabuja will not answer the bell for round 10.
47:56Oh, oh.
47:57Great.
47:59Great.
47:59Excelente.
47:59You know what, Al?
48:15He's got nothing to be ashamed of.
48:17Big heart.
48:18Big heart.
48:19He's been congratulated there by the promoters, Gary Shaw.
48:23What do you think of the decision by Mabuja?
48:28Well, you know, he took a lot of punch from him.
48:30Yeah.
48:30One more time.
48:33Mabuja, you OK?
48:35Mabuja, you OK?
48:35Mabuja, you OK?
48:36Mabuja, you OK?
48:36Mabuja, you OK?
48:37A moment of camaraderie that speaks volumes about these two men.
48:42You hear what the guy said from the Marquez camp?
48:44He said, Mabuja, you OK?
48:45He said, Mabuja, you know, he's a lot of crispness.
48:54Finally, Rafael Marquez can let out a smile, a relief,
48:57after all the training and all the free fight buildup.
49:08Very intense, emotional night here in Lake Tahoe.
49:11And we're only halfway through.
49:13Really, really an exciting and interesting fight.
49:15And for silence, Mabuja, a very, very difficult loss after he turned on one championship match
49:24to get to this one.
49:25In the last round, Rafael Marquez landing some monstrous shots.
49:32This early in the round, where he was landing these great left hooks.
49:34And it was a punch that he took out of mothballs.
49:36Here's the one to the body that I think did a lot of damage.
49:40He had not been throwing the left hook very much for a couple of rounds, Rafael Marquez.
49:43And once he did, he created this.
49:45And for the first time in the fight, Mabuja holding on.
49:48Then, later on in the round, the right hand part of the attack.
49:53And even those half hook, half jabs were so strong by Marquez.
49:58Forgotten sometimes in the label of big puncher is what an accurate puncher Rafael is.
50:03And he showed that in this fight.
50:04And this is what led to the stoppage.
50:08And right at the end of the round, Marquez was just teeing off.
50:12Using the jab, though, and the straight right hand.
50:15One of the great things about Marquez is he never loses his poise, his composure, or his technique.
50:21He doesn't just get wild and use power.
50:24He's a very skilled fighter right now.
50:26Marquez is showing that he's in shape going pretty deep into this fight.
50:30Look out in the higher weight classes.
50:32He's coming.
50:32Look out, 122.
50:34He says, I want to fight the best.
50:35I want to unify that division now.
50:37We hear Israel Vasquez, Daniel Ponce de Leon, top-rated Oscillarios.
50:42Maybe Johnny Gonzalez if he moves up.
50:44Let's get the official word from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon.
50:50Ladies and gentlemen, this bout has been stopped at the end of round number nine.
50:55A referee in charge, Tony Weeks, calls a halt to the contest upon suggestion of the corner.
51:01He is the winner by way of technical knockout.
51:04And still, the IBF and IBO Pantamweight champion of the world, Rafael Marquez.
51:14So they say officially upon suggestion of the corner, the slang term as he threw in the towel,
51:24although Durant never actually physically threw in a towel.
51:27But in any event, the chapter is closed here in our co-feature.
51:31Rafael Marquez holds up his end of the bargain in his final defense at 118 pounds.
51:38So coming up next, from picturesque Lake Tahoe, Nevada, our main event,
51:44the WBO Interim Featherweight Championship, former champion Juan Manuel Marquez,
51:49long recognized as one of the most talented featherweights in the world,
51:53will take on top contender Terzak Jandang of Thailand.
51:56But first, we're set for post-fight reaction from this terrific fight,
52:04so let's go up to the ring and Jim Gray.
52:06Jim?
52:07All right, Steve, thank you very much.
52:09Rafael, congratulations.
52:11Felix de Jesus will interpret for us.
52:13This fight seemed to get a little tough for you in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds.
52:18Was it a bit of a surprise that he was able to rebound after that first round
52:22and put on such a good fight?
52:38He was a great fighter, and, you know, he has a great punch,
52:41so I was a little surprised, but he did do a great job.
52:44What turned around this fight?
52:47What changed the complexion of it?
52:49What changed the fight?
52:51Well, this...
52:53He threw some effective punches, but I turned it around when I got that second win,
53:05and then it showed my strength.
53:07Were you concerned about getting a second win tonight,
53:10being on how it was difficult for you to make this weight
53:13and that you will be moving up in the future?
53:15Yeah, it was difficult to get that weight.
53:17Did you think he was going to have that second win in you?
53:21Well, I really prepared me very well.
53:24I was not going to do this fight.
53:28I was going to go up to the 122 pounds,
53:29but I prepared myself well for this fight.
53:44The last fight ended in a headbutt,
53:45and I wanted to show that I'm a great fighter.
53:47Rafael, stay with us for just a moment.
53:49Let's bring in Silence Mabuza.
53:51And Dr. Damon Zavala, the attending ringside physician,
53:56has said that Silence will be going to the hospital here.
53:59They'll be taken in for a CAT scan and some stitches,
54:02as well as some plastic surgery over at Barton Medical Center.
54:06So let me ask you, first of all, how are you feeling,
54:09and what is your condition?
54:11Look, currently I'm feeling okay,
54:13and I'm so proud of my trainer to stop the fight
54:15because look at the cuts.
54:16I mean, check my face, you can see.
54:18Even the doctor was going to stop the fight maybe the round later.
54:23So, you know, it was a good decision that we made to stop the fight.
54:26What made you decide to jump on in and stop it?
54:28I think, you know, if you have a look at the face,
54:30there's cuts, there's cuts.
54:33The ref would have probably stopped it
54:35or the doctor would have stopped it in another round.
54:36So what I mean, my fighter's health is priority.
54:39And that's, you know, that's number one priority.
54:41It's not about those belts.
54:42It's about his health.
54:43And we'll be back.
54:44You know, this man, I believe, is moving up a division.
54:46We'll be back.
54:47That's the number one bantamweight in the world.
54:49This is the number two.
54:51What changed the complexion of this fight?
54:53You almost went down in the first round.
54:55You rallied.
54:56You had rounds that were very good
54:58in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds,
54:59and it looked as though you were in control of this fight.
55:02What changed?
55:03What happened?
55:05I don't really see, you know, what happened.
55:07But, I mean, look, this is boxing.
55:09You know, now and then you get caught with the punches
55:11that people outside cannot see.
55:12But as a boxer inside the ring, you can feel those punches.
55:15But nonetheless, I mean, look, he's a very strong boy.
55:17He's a tough boxer.
55:19Respect for Marquez.
55:20He came very hard.
55:21His face doesn't look like he's had a walk in the park either.
55:24Nick, good decision by you, Nick.
55:26It's Island's terrific show tonight.
55:28We look forward to seeing you in the future.
55:29All right.
55:30Thanks, Alex.
55:31All right.
55:31What will you do next, Felix?
55:33Ask him what he'll do next.
55:34He's a great champion in the 120 pounds,
55:50and that's where I want to fight,
55:51and I want to fight those champions there.
55:53Your brother was very nervous.
55:54Hermana, Hermana, Señor, very nervous watching you.
55:58You're nervous watching him as he fights next?
56:00Hermana, I was very nervous seeing you fight.
56:02Yes, I do get very nervous when he fights, but he's in great condition,
56:21and I also want to thank Gary Shaw Productions.
56:25Rafael, congratulations to you.
56:26We look forward to seeing you fight in the future.
56:28Thank you very much.
56:29Felicidades a dos veces.
56:30Muchas gracias.
56:31All right.
56:31Back to you, Steve.
56:32All right, Jim.
56:33Thank you so much.
56:34Before we show you the numbers,
56:36the scoring by Presto and the official ringside judges,
56:39let's listen to what happened in the corner after round nine
56:44with Nick Durant and Silence Mabuza.
56:46It's about to punch.
56:48Here you go.
56:52Huh?
56:53No more?
56:55That's it.
56:56That's it.
56:57It's over.
56:57It's over.
56:58It's over.
56:58Benito.
57:07Here you go, man.
57:08All right, so that's what happened to the corner.
57:23Was it Silence Mabuza?
57:25It almost sounded as if he suggested it,
57:27and Durant agreed.
57:29And in any case, it was a joint decision,
57:31and they decided no point in going on.
57:33Okay, here's the scoring.
57:34At the time of the stoppage,
57:36Adelaide Bird had an 88-83 Marquez.
57:39Bird Clements, 87-83 Marquez.
57:42And Glenn Feldman for Marquez, 88-83.
57:45So he really pulled away.
57:47Yeah, Marquez had taken control of this fight
57:49and was really dominating after the good middle rounds by Mabuza.
57:53And we'll check out the press row scoring.
57:55Tom Gardner from the AP had an 88-83 Marquez.
57:58Mike Hauser from the Nevada Appeal had Marquez by three points.
58:02And Mario Serrano from the Premier Round magazine
58:06had Marquez the closest, 86-85.
58:09And this was a very competitive fight,
58:11despite the fact that Marquez had taken control.
58:14Very interesting fight.
58:15A lot of courage shown by Silence Mabuza,
58:17and a terrific champion makes his seventh defense
58:20of the IBF Bantamweight title.
58:22And before we continue our coverage from Lake Tahoe, Nevada,
58:25here's a word about one of our original series
