Olympic and World Champion Keshorn Walcott has signaled his eagerness to serve as a national sport ambassador.
Walcott who won gold in the Javellin, remains hungry to represent Trinidad and Tobago on the world stage.
The World and Olympic champion believes his achievements and global connections have positioned him to take on the responsibility of promoting local sport.
00:00Gold medalist in the javelin at the World Championships, Kishon Walcott, says he is ready to pick up his official role as a national sport ambassador.
00:09In some sense, he has already been functioning in the capacity, having launched the Walcott Golden Athletics League and put a positive brand on the country with his performances.
00:19Now he says it's official.
00:20I guess it's an official title, you know. It will take more duties outside of the track.
00:27I think I'm at that stage where I'm ready for that because I've already started in terms of development with the track and field, with the youths, the league, you know.
00:36So I'm ready and able to put my best foot forward in that position.
00:43He says he's not the same teenage athlete struck by stardom that returned into the airport nervously speaking in front of an adoring public.
00:50Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure, for sure.
00:52You know, 19 years old, coming back, country not knowing you, being a young guy who barely speaks, that was, as Drew said today, nervousness.
01:03It was just nervous.
01:04But now I'm at a later stage in my career and I think I've seen and experienced so much, not just locally but internationally, you know, interacted with so much different athletes, so much different people.
01:15And one of the biggest things I always try to do is learn.
01:18So I've been learning a lot and I am really, really looking forward to actually implement those things in the local field when it comes to track and field.
01:26As part of his responsibilities, Walcott intends to encourage others living abroad to return to the land of their birth so that they can develop sport locally.
01:36No, no, no, no. I haven't seen one place better than Trinidad that I've been.
01:40No, no, no, no. I'm here. I would like to bring everybody here because we have so many great, whether it be coaches, physios.
01:49I know a lot of them who are actually Trinidadians and I'm actually trying to get them back because we need to build here.
01:55And we need to build not just the coaching level but the science level as well, you know.
02:00So I am here. I think if I was to leave, I would have left a long time ago.
02:05But no, no, Trinidad is my home and it will forever be my home.
02:09He will continue competing as well as he wants to bring home a Commonwealth gold medal.
02:14I need to win gold in Commonwealth.
02:18So I have the silver medal already but I need to win.
02:20So that's going to be our major goal outside of Trinidad for next season.
