With stars like Mervin Dillon, Ian Bishop and Keshorn Walcott all coming from Toco is it time to start the conversation for a stadium in the far east? It's one of the questions that was asked to Walcott who held his Golden League in his homeland on the weekend. The National Sport Ambassador was a busy man organizing his meet which attracted spectators and athletes from around the country.
Transcript
00:00Happy to be back home.
00:03Toko, the land of the world champion Olympic gold medalist, Keyshawn Walcott.
00:09He's given the respect he deserves whenever he comes around, especially for the Golden League.
00:14It's a privilege to be able to do this in Toko.
00:16Never had something like this growing up, so now the athletes could be able to compete in front of their friends and their family.
00:22So yeah, I'm actually really proud of it, that we could actually bring our leg to Toko.
00:25He mentioned that athletes' performances had been impacted by the outfield at the Toko Secondary School.
00:32But that will not be a factor for the next leg.
00:35I think it could have been better, but the weather affected everything.
00:38The field was a bit soggy, so the athletes were a bit careful.
00:42And the performances, I'm sure, was affected by the dampness of the ground.
00:47So as long as they were competitive and they had fun, I think this is most important.
00:51Will you be looking at that for the next edition?
00:53In terms of the field?
00:56Yeah.
00:57No, so actually just here is the only problem.
01:01Rain always falls in Toko.
01:03The next one is in Digo Martin.
01:04That's actually the best one because the field is actually well-maintained and it's really well.
01:09The athletes tend to perform a lot better there because it's closer to the Mundo.
01:13So yeah, I think Digo Martin has always been good.
01:16We had two meets there last year and both of them went off really well.
01:19So I think I'm looking forward to it in March.
01:21Digo Martin should be really good.
01:22The authenticity of the event continues to attract people from around the country.
01:27And Walcott is also pleased about that.
01:30Yeah, some people, first time they come into Toko, they were happy, you know, to take the trip.
01:35Last year especially, but this year is like the second time.
01:38So they look forward to it, exploring, seeing the different parts of the country.
01:41I think that's one aspect of it as well for the meets because some people have never been to some places to compete and different things.
01:47It's always just in the stadium.
01:49So yeah, the locals as well, they're really happy to see the initiative.
01:55They're hoping for something more.
01:57I myself hoping for something more, but we don't know what that more is right now.
02:02But hopefully in the future, something else will happen.
02:04He also gave his thoughts on whether or not Toko will benefit from a stadium.
02:07The National Sport Ambassador, who is preparing for the Diamond League in May, believes that the initiative is an ideal way to show sponsors what they are buying into.
02:34as the program majors on talent identification in track and field.
02:39Who's your next Jablin star for TNT?
02:41I want my little cousin, man.
02:44What's his name?
02:45No, it's a girl.
02:46What's a girl?
02:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:48Yannick Stout.
02:48Yannick Stout.
02:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:50I'm trying.
02:50I'm trying.
02:51She has some good potential.
02:53I've been working with my aunt and mom.
02:57She has some good talent, but she's still young, so we know a lot of mistakes has been made and a lot of mental.
03:04So, yeah, but hopefully by the end of this year, we'll see better performances.
03:10And, but yeah, yeah, I'm actually excited for what I see.
03:13For now, Walcott wants more structure in track and the field to help athletes transition from grass to track.
03:19And he believes that the competition is doing its part by helping athletes with pre-season competition.
03:24Sergio Dufour, TV Sexport.
