00:00:00I've made this statement today, just have your way, Lord, we pray, in Jesus' name, Amen.

00:00:08So I call this talk Palestine and Israel, or Israel and Palestine, the insoluble problem, question mark.

00:00:17I think if you look at it from a human point of view, it is very much an insoluble problem.

00:00:23But there is a solution, not one which the UN is considering, or which our government is considering,

00:00:28or which even, to be honest, the government of Israel is considering.

00:00:32But it's going to come to pass because God's word is sure.

00:00:38You're probably aware that today the UK government recognised a Palestinian state.

00:00:46Our Prime Minister, Zakiya Starmer, said, quote,

00:00:51In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace

00:00:56and a two-state solution that means a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.

00:01:05At the moment, we have neither.

00:01:07To derive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly, as Prime Minister of this great country,

00:01:13that the United Kingdom formally recognises the state of Palestine.

00:01:17We recognised the state of Israel more than 75 years ago as a homeland for the Jewish people.

00:01:22Today we join over 150 countries who recognise a Palestinian state too.

00:01:29We make a pledge to the Palestinian and Israeli people that there can be a better future.

00:01:36A few faces are looking a bit nonplussed by that and perhaps not believing that it's going to lead to a better future.

00:01:42But we'll have a look at it and see what we can make of it.

00:01:45We recognise the state of Israel more than 75 years ago.

00:01:49I don't know if you know that Britain was one of the countries who had actually abstained in the UN vote

00:01:53to bring Israel into being back in 1947.

00:02:00Now, all this is in preparation actually for the vote tomorrow,

00:02:04which will take place at the UN General Assembly,

00:02:07where they're expected to vote to recognise the state of Palestine.

00:02:11This follows the UN Security Resolution of 2735,

00:02:18which was adopted in June in 2024,

00:02:21which has, quote,

00:02:22the Security Council reiterates its unwavering commitment

00:02:25to the vision of the two-state solution,

00:02:28where two democratic states at Israel and Palestine

00:02:31live side by side in peace within secure and recognised borders

00:02:35consistent with international law and relevant UN resolutions.

00:02:39And if you look at this question from a purely human point of view,

00:02:44you might say, well, it's a fair solution.

00:02:45You've got two people arguing over one land.

00:02:49Just divide up the land between them,

00:02:50have one bit for the Jews and one bit for the Arabs,

00:02:52and they can live in peace together.

00:02:55Sounds fair, sounds a good idea.

00:02:58There are a few problems, as we shall see, more than problems.

00:03:01And what I'm going to show you tonight,

00:03:04firstly from a political point of view,

00:03:05then from a biblical point of view,

00:03:07is why this is not going to work.

00:03:08Now, first of all, I have to say that the UN's declaration on a...

00:03:14We're starting off on the political,

00:03:15so if you don't like politics, switch off,

00:03:17but if you do, you need to know this

00:03:18because you need to know what this is all about.

00:03:21The UN's declaration of the Palestinian state

00:03:24doesn't mean that it comes into being

00:03:25as a result of that declaration.

00:03:28There has to be an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians

00:03:32under international law

00:03:34before the Palestinian state can come into being.

00:03:37A legally recognized state needs to have a defined border,

00:03:41a functioning government,

00:03:42and agree to live side by side with its neighbors in peace.

00:03:46As things stand, that is actually not just way off.

00:03:51It looks almost impossible to achieve.

00:03:55This is the map of the state.

00:03:57You know, here's Israel,

00:03:59here's the area known as the West Bank,

00:04:01here's the Gaza Strip,

00:04:03there's the Golan Heights.

00:04:05A little bit of history about this area.

00:04:07In 1948, the UN actually did agree to partition

00:04:13the western side of Palestine,

00:04:15as it was under the British,

00:04:17to have an Arab state and a Jewish state

00:04:18living side by side.

00:04:20That never came into being

00:04:22because on the day after Israel

00:04:24made its declaration of independence,

00:04:25on May the 14th, 1948,

00:04:28five Arab armies attacked Israel

00:04:29with the intention to drive Israel into the sea

00:04:32and make an end of the Jewish state at birth.

00:04:35Miraculously, because Israel had very little going for it

00:04:39in terms of army and defense,

00:04:40they actually defeated all these armies

00:04:42and pushed them back

00:04:43so that the ceasefire lines were along these lines here.

00:04:47That was actually the ceasefire line

00:04:48after the War of Independence.

00:04:52And Israel ruled in the area in orange,

00:04:56Gaza was under Egypt,

00:04:57and the West Bank was under Jordan.

00:05:00The West Bank is the most significant part,

00:05:02so I'm going to dwell more on that.

00:05:03If you know your geography and Bible history,

00:05:07you'll know that the West Bank

00:05:08is the heartland of Judea and Samaria,

00:05:11the biblical heartland of Israel,

00:05:13biblical Israel.

00:05:15Hebron down there,

00:05:17Bethlehem, Jerusalem,

00:05:19Jericho, Nablus,

00:05:21which is Shechem in the Bible,

00:05:23Ramallah, Bethel,

00:05:24all those places are

00:05:26heartland of biblical Israel,

00:05:28Judea and Samaria.

00:05:29When the Jordanians

00:05:32set themselves up in that part,

00:05:34they renamed the area

00:05:35the West Bank.

00:05:36Why do they call it West Bank?

00:05:37Because it's West Bank of the Jordan.

00:05:40The East Bank of the Jordan

00:05:41is Jordan itself.

00:05:43So Jordan took over this area

00:05:44from 1948 through to 1967.

00:05:48This was never actually sanctioned

00:05:50by any international agreement.

00:05:54In fact, the only two countries

00:05:55who recognized it

00:05:56were Britain and Pakistan.

00:05:58So it was actually

00:05:59unallocated territory.

00:06:02But Jordan absorbed it

00:06:02into their territory.

00:06:04So from 1948 to 1967,

00:06:06that was part of Jordan,

00:06:09the West Bank of the Jordan.

00:06:111967, remember the,

00:06:13if you don't remember,

00:06:14I remember because that was actually

00:06:15when I became interested in Israel

00:06:16when I was studying at university

00:06:18in the second year.

00:06:19I was hearing about

00:06:20Nasser of Egypt

00:06:21saying that the Egyptians

00:06:23were going to drive

00:06:24the Israelis into the sea

00:06:25and armies were gathering

00:06:26on the borders of Israel

00:06:27to wipe out Israel

00:06:29in the build-up

00:06:30to the Six-Day War

00:06:31which happened in June 1967.

00:06:34As it happened far from

00:06:36driving Israel into the sea,

00:06:37after just six days,

00:06:38Israel managed to get control

00:06:40of the whole of the Sinai

00:06:41in Plensina,

00:06:42Gaza Strip,

00:06:43the West Bank,

00:06:44East Jerusalem

00:06:44and the Golan Heights.

00:06:46One of the most remarkable

00:06:47victories in history

00:06:49which placed all that territory

00:06:51under Israel's control.

00:06:53gave them much better

00:06:55strategic defence

00:06:56because now they didn't

00:06:57have to worry about

00:06:58this area being a area

00:07:00which would lead to terrorism.

00:07:02Just for your interest,

00:07:04that from there

00:07:04to the Mediterranean Sea

00:07:06is just nine miles.

00:07:08So Israel was always vulnerable

00:07:09within those borders.

00:07:12So in 1967,

00:07:13they gained control of them.

00:07:16They actually offered

00:07:16to hand back

00:07:17this whole territory

00:07:18to the countries

00:07:21they'd come from

00:07:21to Jordan,

00:07:22to Egypt,

00:07:23to Syria

00:07:23and they said

00:07:25that in return

00:07:25for peace,

00:07:26negotiations

00:07:27and recognition,

00:07:29they would hand

00:07:29these territories back.

00:07:31In 1968,

00:07:33just a year later,

00:07:33the Arab League

00:07:34had a conference

00:07:35at a place called Khartoum

00:07:36in Sudan

00:07:36and they issued

00:07:38the famous three no's,

00:07:39no negotiations,

00:07:40no peace,

00:07:41no settlements

00:07:44with Israel.

00:07:46So Israel said,

00:07:48okay,

00:07:48well you don't want

00:07:48to recognise us,

00:07:49you don't want

00:07:49to negotiate it with us

00:07:50we'll hang on

00:07:51to the territories

00:07:52which they did.

00:07:55There's a question

00:07:55about what they're

00:07:56going to do

00:07:56with this territory

00:07:57where they've

00:07:58basically taken

00:07:58over the Golan Heights,

00:08:00they've actually

00:08:00absorbed the Golan Heights

00:08:01now into Israel.

00:08:04They did eventually

00:08:04hand back the Sinai

00:08:05to Egypt.

00:08:07They kept control

00:08:08of Gaza

00:08:09and of the West Bank

00:08:11and they began

00:08:12to settle,

00:08:13put settlements

00:08:14into the West Bank.

00:08:14First of all,

00:08:15they were army settlements

00:08:16just to look after

00:08:17to keep the peace there

00:08:19and then they began

00:08:20to build towns

00:08:21in the West Bank,

00:08:22settlements as they're called.

00:08:24I hear a lot

00:08:24about the Israeli

00:08:24settlements.

00:08:27They're more

00:08:27than settlements,

00:08:28actually they're

00:08:28they're towns,

00:08:29they're large towns.

00:08:31Mala Adumim,

00:08:32which is just

00:08:33to the east

00:08:33of Jerusalem,

00:08:35has 40,000

00:08:36inhabitants in it.

00:08:37So it's not just

00:08:37a few people

00:08:38sitting on tents

00:08:39in the hilltop,

00:08:40it's a fully

00:08:41fledged town.

00:08:44Now it's said

00:08:45that this is illegal,

00:08:45actually it's not illegal

00:08:46because technically

00:08:47this area,

00:08:48the West Bank particularly,

00:08:49is unallocated territory.

00:08:52It's never been agreed

00:08:53by any government

00:08:54who this should belong to.

00:08:56So setting up

00:08:56a Palestinian state

00:08:57means you're actually

00:08:58going to bring something

00:08:58into being

00:08:59under international law

00:09:01which has not been

00:09:01previously the case.

00:09:04So at the moment

00:09:05its majority population

00:09:07of course is Arab

00:09:07in the main towns

00:09:09in Shechem,

00:09:10in Nablus,

00:09:11in Hebron,

00:09:11Bethlehem,

00:09:12all Arab towns,

00:09:13but there are Jewish

00:09:15settlements all around them.

00:09:16And of course

00:09:19at the centre of it

00:09:20is Jerusalem.

00:09:22For 1967

00:09:23Jerusalem was

00:09:25a divided city

00:09:26between Jordan

00:09:27controlling the old

00:09:28city of Jerusalem,

00:09:29the east side of Jerusalem,

00:09:30east Jerusalem,

00:09:31and Israel

00:09:32which controlled

00:09:33the west side of Jerusalem.

00:09:35And you've got

00:09:36the Knesset building

00:09:37which is in west Jerusalem.

00:09:38You've also got

00:09:39the Temple Mount,

00:09:42Western Wall,

00:09:43all those parts

00:09:44are in east Jerusalem

00:09:45in the old city.

00:09:47So all the holy places

00:09:48are in the east side

00:09:48of Jerusalem

00:09:49and the modern city

00:09:51is in the west side.

00:09:53Now Israel has

00:09:53taken over Jerusalem,

00:09:55it's actually absorbed

00:09:56Jerusalem into its territory

00:09:57and it calls Jerusalem

00:09:58the indivisible capital

00:10:00of Israel.

00:10:01And it says that

00:10:02it's not going to hand over

00:10:03any part of Israel,

00:10:04it's put settlements

00:10:05all around Jerusalem

00:10:05so Jerusalem has now

00:10:06become the capital

00:10:08of Israel

00:10:08and is under

00:10:11Israeli control.

00:10:11West Bank is actually

00:10:14quite a small area

00:10:15about 22,200 square miles

00:10:18roughly about the same size

00:10:22as the county of Devon

00:10:23so you're not talking

00:10:25about a huge area

00:10:25you're talking about

00:10:26a small area

00:10:26and it's now

00:10:29in a state of change

00:10:32if you like

00:10:32because of the

00:10:33Oslo Accords

00:10:34it's now been

00:10:36divided up

00:10:37so you have parts

00:10:38which are under

00:10:38Israeli control

00:10:39parts which are

00:10:40under Arab control

00:10:41and under

00:10:42the Palestinian Authority.

00:10:44Now that map

00:10:45shows you

00:10:45the different areas

00:10:48area A, B and C

00:10:50area A is actually

00:10:52the parts which are

00:10:53fully under the control

00:10:55of the Palestinian Authority

00:10:56under Mahmoud Abbas

00:10:58the major population centres

00:11:00in the Arab world

00:11:02in the Arab part of it

00:11:03the white parts

00:11:06are partially under

00:11:08his control

00:11:08they're sort of

00:11:09semi-control

00:11:10and the purple part

00:11:12is under

00:11:13Israeli control

00:11:14that's area C

00:11:16area C covers about

00:11:1860% of the total area

00:11:21and it's currently

00:11:23under Israeli control

00:11:24in this area

00:11:26there are some

00:11:26140 Jewish settlements

00:11:28with around

00:11:30500,000 Israelis

00:11:31living there

00:11:32about 200,000

00:11:33living in Jerusalem

00:11:34and this is the

00:11:37big area of contesting

00:11:38which Israel has

00:11:40been condemned for

00:11:41in settling that

00:11:42part of the world

00:11:42but that's just

00:11:43how it is.

00:11:45The latest situation

00:11:46is that they want

00:11:47to build a settlement

00:11:48in this area here

00:11:50which is known as

00:11:50E1

00:11:51that's East Jerusalem

00:11:53that's the old city

00:11:54of Jerusalem here

00:11:55there's East Jerusalem

00:11:57you come through to here

00:11:59you've got Mali Adumim

00:12:00which is the place

00:12:00which I just mentioned

00:12:01and you've got another

00:12:03Israeli settlement

00:12:04there

00:12:05they want to build here

00:12:07and what the world

00:12:09is really contesting

00:12:10about that is

00:12:11if they build here

00:12:12then you've got

00:12:13the whole of Jerusalem

00:12:14right through to

00:12:15really down to

00:12:16the Jordan River

00:12:16which is now

00:12:18under Israeli control

00:12:19and the world

00:12:20is saying that

00:12:21if you do that

00:12:21then you're cutting off

00:12:22the northern part

00:12:23of the West Bank

00:12:24from the southern part

00:12:25so that'll divide it

00:12:27into two parts

00:12:28which will be

00:12:29make it

00:12:30administratively

00:12:30very difficult

00:12:31if you have

00:12:32a Palestinian state

00:12:33and

00:12:37Netanyahu

00:12:40spoke at Mali

00:12:41Adumim

00:12:42in a meeting

00:12:43recently

00:12:43and he said

00:12:44we're going to

00:12:45fulfill our promise

00:12:46that there'll be

00:12:47no Palestinian state

00:12:48this place

00:12:49belongs to us

00:12:50okay

00:12:52so

00:12:52as far as Netanyahu

00:12:53is concerned

00:12:53he said

00:12:54this area

00:12:55is our area

00:12:56we're going to

00:12:57do what we want

00:12:57in it

00:12:58we're going to

00:12:58build here

00:12:58and the world

00:13:00can

00:13:00once they go

00:13:01to hell

00:13:02the world

00:13:02can just

00:13:03pay no attention

00:13:03that's our

00:13:04decision

00:13:05as far as

00:13:06the world

00:13:06is concerned

00:13:07that is a

00:13:07very bad

00:13:08decision

00:13:08and

00:13:09Amnesty

00:13:11International

00:13:11says here

00:13:12the E1 area

00:13:13provides a vital

00:13:14passage between

00:13:15the northern

00:13:15and southern

00:13:16West Bank

00:13:16should Israel

00:13:18construction

00:13:18take place

00:13:19on this land

00:13:20a continuous

00:13:20Israeli present

00:13:22will be established

00:13:22from East Jerusalem

00:13:23to the Jordan

00:13:23Valley

00:13:24effectively

00:13:25cutting the

00:13:25West Bank

00:13:26in half

00:13:26and severing

00:13:27East Jerusalem

00:13:28from the

00:13:28remainder

00:13:29of the

00:13:29West Bank

00:13:30so the

00:13:31occupied West Bank

00:13:32they call it

00:13:33so basically

00:13:34this is some

00:13:35of the

00:13:35politics

00:13:36behind that

00:13:37part of it

00:13:37now as far as

00:13:39Israel is concerned

00:13:40they say that

00:13:40this is

00:13:41our territory

00:13:42and if you're

00:13:44going to have

00:13:44a Palestinian

00:13:44state

00:13:45that territory

00:13:46goes to

00:13:49Palestine

00:13:49and basically

00:13:51all those

00:13:51settlements

00:13:51will have to

00:13:53be uprooted

00:13:54so 500,000

00:13:55Israelis

00:13:56will have to

00:13:56be moved

00:13:57200,000

00:13:58Israelis

00:13:58around Jerusalem

00:13:59is Israel

00:14:01going to do

00:14:01that

00:14:01not in the

00:14:03present situation

00:14:04at all

00:14:05on the

00:14:0724th of

00:14:08July

00:14:092025

00:14:10the Knesset

00:14:11voted

00:14:11Judea and

00:14:13Samaria

00:14:13and the

00:14:14Jordan Valley

00:14:14are an

00:14:15inseparable

00:14:15part of

00:14:16Eretz Israel

00:14:16means the

00:14:17land of

00:14:18Israel

00:14:18the historical

00:14:19cultural

00:14:20and spiritual

00:14:20homeland

00:14:21of the

00:14:21Jewish

00:14:21people

00:14:22thousands

00:14:23of years

00:14:23before the

00:14:24state's

00:14:24establishment

00:14:24the forefathers

00:14:25and prophets

00:14:26of the

00:14:26nation

00:14:26lived and

00:14:27acted in

00:14:27these

00:14:27regions

00:14:28and the

00:14:29foundations

00:14:30of Jewish

00:14:30culture and

00:14:31faith will

00:14:31aid in

00:14:32them

00:14:32sovereignty

00:14:33in Eretz Israel

00:14:34is an

00:14:34inseparable

00:14:35part of

00:14:35the fulfillment

00:14:36of Zionism

00:14:36and the

00:14:37national vision

00:14:38of the

00:14:38Jewish

00:14:38people

00:14:39that has

00:14:39returned to

00:14:40its

00:14:40homeland

00:14:41the massacre

00:14:42of October

00:14:43the 7th

00:14:442023

00:14:45proved that

00:14:45the establishment

00:14:46of a

00:14:47Palestinian

00:14:47state

00:14:47poses an

00:14:48existential

00:14:49danger

00:14:50to Israel

00:14:50its citizens

00:14:51and the

00:14:52entire

00:14:53region

00:14:53that's a

00:14:54statement

00:14:55from the

00:14:55Knesset

00:14:57you actually

00:14:58got two

00:14:59statements

00:14:59there

00:14:59he's saying

00:15:00that this

00:15:00territory

00:15:00here

00:15:02is the

00:15:03heartland

00:15:03of

00:15:04biblical

00:15:05Israel

00:15:05it's where

00:15:07our foundations

00:15:08are

00:15:08where our

00:15:09history

00:15:09is

00:15:09we're not

00:15:10going to

00:15:10hand it

00:15:10over

00:15:11to a

00:15:12Palestinian

00:15:12state

00:15:13I have to

00:15:14say that

00:15:14not all

00:15:15Israelis

00:15:15feel that

00:15:15way

00:15:15but the

00:15:16government

00:15:17of Netanyahu

00:15:17does

00:15:18Netanyahu

00:15:18is actually

00:15:19on the

00:15:19right of

00:15:20Israeli

00:15:20politics

00:15:21and he's

00:15:21backed by

00:15:21a group

00:15:22who are

00:15:22on the

00:15:23extreme

00:15:23right of

00:15:23Israeli

00:15:23politics

00:15:24there are

00:15:25some in

00:15:25Israel

00:15:25who say

00:15:26that no

00:15:26we shouldn't

00:15:27do that

00:15:27we should

00:15:28actually

00:15:28not take

00:15:29this territory

00:15:30we should

00:15:30move towards

00:15:31a Palestinian

00:15:31state

00:15:32so it's not

00:15:33a universally

00:15:34agreed policy

00:15:36in Israel

00:15:36and there are

00:15:38aspects I have to

00:15:38say of Israel's

00:15:39settlement policy

00:15:40which I don't

00:15:40agree with

00:15:41either

00:15:41for example

00:15:43I saw a

00:15:43program on the

00:15:44television

00:15:44recently

00:15:44of settlers

00:15:45on a hilltop

00:15:47in one of

00:15:47these settlements

00:15:48who were

00:15:49driving the

00:15:50Arabs off

00:15:50the land

00:15:50and threatening

00:15:52them

00:15:52so they were

00:15:54chopping down

00:15:55their trees

00:15:55and Arab

00:15:56came on

00:15:56and said

00:15:57these trees

00:15:57were planted

00:15:58by my

00:15:58grandparents

00:15:58now they're

00:15:59coming to

00:16:00chop them

00:16:00down to

00:16:00push us

00:16:00off the

00:16:01land

00:16:01which is

00:16:02terrible

00:16:03I mean

00:16:03I don't

00:16:03agree with

00:16:04that behavior

00:16:04at all

00:16:05and there are

00:16:06things which

00:16:06Israel does

00:16:06which we have

00:16:07to say

00:16:07are not

00:16:08in the

00:16:09right way

00:16:09in fact

00:16:10in the

00:16:10Torah

00:16:10it says

00:16:10you shouldn't

00:16:11chop down

00:16:11your enemies

00:16:12trees

00:16:12by the way

00:16:12so there are

00:16:14things which are

00:16:15happening which are

00:16:15not right

00:16:16so I'm not

00:16:16endorsing

00:16:17everything

00:16:17that Israel

00:16:18is doing

00:16:18but at the

00:16:20same time

00:16:20one has to

00:16:20say that

00:16:21from a legal

00:16:21point of

00:16:21view

00:16:22Israel

00:16:22does have

00:16:23the right

00:16:23to put

00:16:24settlements

00:16:24in these

00:16:25areas

00:16:26and if you

00:16:27want to put

00:16:27a Palestinian

00:16:28state in

00:16:28this place

00:16:28you've

00:16:29got to ask

00:16:29what are

00:16:30they going

00:16:30to do

00:16:30with all

00:16:30those

00:16:31people

00:16:31who live

00:16:31there

00:16:31it's

00:16:32a major

00:16:33problem

00:16:33now it

00:16:35also said

00:16:36the second

00:16:36thing he

00:16:36said was

00:16:37that

00:16:37the establishment

00:16:39of a

00:16:39Palestinian

00:16:40state

00:16:40poses an

00:16:41existential

00:16:41danger

00:16:42to Israel

00:16:43its

00:16:43citizens

00:16:44and the

00:16:44entire

00:16:45region

00:16:45that's

00:16:48by far

00:16:48the biggest

00:16:48issue

00:16:49actually

00:16:49for

00:16:49Israel

00:16:50which is

00:16:51security

00:16:51and Israel

00:16:53feels threatened

00:16:53by a

00:16:54Palestinian

00:16:54state

00:16:55that has

00:16:56the ultimate

00:16:56goal not

00:16:57of living

00:16:57alongside

00:16:57Israel in

00:16:58peace and

00:16:58partnership

00:16:59but of

00:17:00destroying

00:17:01Israel

00:17:01replacing it

00:17:02with an

00:19:55poor state

00:19:57Israel's

00:19:59defence has

00:19:59worked very

00:20:02course but

00:20:02also at a

00:20:04tremendous cost

00:20:04to Israel's

00:20:05image especially

00:20:06with what's

00:20:07happened in

00:20:07Gaza

00:20:07and if you've

00:20:09seen what's

00:20:09happened in

00:20:09Gaza you've

00:20:10seen the

00:20:11destruction of

00:20:12the towns

00:20:13the people

00:20:13fleeing and

00:20:14in misery

00:20:15and all the

00:20:16issues about

00:20:16the aid

00:20:17getting through

00:20:17accusations

00:20:18that Israel

00:20:19has been

00:20:19doing genocide

00:20:22against the

00:20:23Palestinians

00:20:24a lot of

00:20:25propaganda

00:20:25against Israel

00:20:26Israel

00:20:27hasn't been

00:20:28perfect but

00:20:28Israel hasn't

00:20:29done what it

00:20:29could to

00:20:30stop the

00:20:31destruction of

00:20:32the civilian

00:20:33population

00:20:33someone said

00:20:35if they wanted

00:20:35to do genocide

00:20:36against the

00:20:37Palestinians

00:20:38to do was
