James "Lights Out" Toney defends his IBF Super Middleweight Title against former Light Heavyweight Champion "Prince" Charles Williams on HBO Boxing
Transcript
00:00:00George Foreman elects to do his own business this time calls up James
00:00:03Tony's manager Jackie Callen and tries to make the fight himself because he
00:00:07wants the paycheck now when a guy is that hungry does that make him more
00:00:10dangerous it really makes him awful dangerous but sometimes you can call the
00:00:15wrong guy up you can get mixed up George Foreman doesn't call anybody some
00:00:18fellas I would prefer not to talk to knock all up but he I think is made wrong
00:00:22phone number this time it was a wrong number call another number well we're
00:00:26about to find out as we get ready to watch James Tony the IBS super middle
00:00:29weight champion as he defends that title against Prince Charles Williams all
00:00:33week long Larry we've been hearing about wise guys insiders smart boxing types who
00:00:39are lining up at the sports books here in town to take the three or four to one
00:00:43odds and bet on Prince Charles Williams why well it does seem odd in a way
00:00:49because if you would have bet every fight against James Tony you would be oh and
00:00:5543 and broke why would you try to go out there and pick the first
00:00:59defeat of an undefeated outstanding champion but it is a reflection of the
00:01:06respect with which Williams is held in the boxing community he was a very good
00:01:11light heavyweight champion and the feeling is is that if he can hold the
00:01:15lower weight of about 168 pounds and by holding it I mean if he can sustain
00:01:21himself through a long grueling tough fight without falling apart because of
00:01:27the weight and he just might be counted as the toughest opponent that James Tony
00:01:32has been in with now let me give you a dietary note on how he lost this way he
00:01:36gave up his addiction to soda pop some 12 to 15 cans of it a day anyone who is that
00:01:45serious about a fight has to be dangerous his problem is that James Tony has been
00:01:51serious about all of his fights lately great dietary note one backward step for
00:01:56Mountain Dew one step forward for Prince Charles Williams as for Tony so much
00:02:00attention has been paid to his relationship with his manager the woman
00:02:03Jackie Callan that it will ultimately be the subject of a feature film much less
00:02:07attention has been paid to his relationship with his septuagenarian
00:02:11trainer Bill Miller here's a closer look
00:02:24in boxing there is no place like the corner the corner is home to craftsmen who
00:02:29must be part surgeon part field general heart psychologist for James Tony his
00:02:35corner is manned by one of the best a wily veteran named Bill Pops Miller
00:02:40at first glance 74 year old Bill Miller and 25 year old James Tony would seem an odd
00:02:51couple and indeed early on the two didn't mesh I mean the first time we used to work together at
00:02:57he said Jim oh I wanted to kill you yeah he's me this guy I met and you know cuz he
00:03:04don't take no you know pops don't tell the bullshit he's he straight up it's either his way or the highway
00:03:08he said I'm too old for this I don't need this if you're gonna learn you're gonna learn if you're gonna play
00:03:13around go somewhere else I don't need you I looked at James I said look like he's a good athlete all you need
00:03:20somebody to stay on push him and be willing to teach him because probably up until then he probably never dealt with nobody like me
00:03:31what Miller saw in Tony was a flashback to his own youth to the 1930s in Cincinnati where Miller began his boxing career as a young boy
00:03:38boy my mother had three brothers they was all prize fighters consequently at the early age they should take me with them to them gyms as they would teach me I'd practice on all the kids in the neighborhood
00:03:53for seven decades Miller has studied the sweet science and now he imparts his encyclopedic knowledge of the sport to James
00:04:00professor Miller tutors his young student with the help of vintage fight films particularly those of an old friend from Cincinnati
00:04:06former heavyweight champion Ezra Charles we always watch the mass combination then we'd watch his defense I could make a man miss the slip and slide rolling
00:04:18car and have still have good position good balance and knew where he was at at all times out there and these are the things that you know we should talk about
00:04:27says you're gonna do all this here and we always say that you're gonna be better than these guys you're gonna take what they had and
00:04:36improve on it he used to hang out with his man as a child so he tried to bring something out out in me you know I work on my leg image tapes he said look at
00:04:45these tapes study them and then you try to infect them as we go along you don't tell the person to know you know he's a teacher he's not a trainer he's a teacher I'm a student I listen to
00:04:55everything he says there is one thing however that James will not listen to Bill's music Bill Miller's passion for boxing is exceeded only by his love of
00:05:06jazz I should always say that Charlie Parker was the music what Ray Robinson was at the boxing and you listen to Charlie Parker play you listen to a master he heard it all there and he expressed it with his instrument where Ray Robinson expressed his with his movement his hand speed and his agility and it was close related it told you a message
00:05:35all in all Bill Miller and James Tony are an odd couple but the combination works because of their mutual love of boxing and their mutual respect and love for one another see James like a son to me I love James I do anything for James people say well why don't you change his attitude if I change his attitude then he wouldn't be James Tony I love him like he is
00:06:01he's like a dad to me dad I never had coming up you know I can go to pops for anything yeah I love pops he's great you know I just love him I love him dearly
00:06:10a moment of sweetness from the angry young man of boxing James Tony here's tonight's opponent Prince Charles Williams 32 years old he has been in boxing as a professional for 16 years
00:06:29he has spent more than 10 of those years fighting in the light heavyweight division as you saw he is the first ever former light heavyweight champion to fight for 168 pound crown but in all reality Larry Merchant the 168 pound division has emerged in the sport since Prince Charles Williams made his commitment early on to become a light heavyweight that's right James Tony has has made the division although of course Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns fought at that weight
00:06:58late in their careers but Tony has made this division meaningful for however long he stays in it and perhaps there are some other light heavyweights who would have fought at this weight had it been meaningful and if you could make some money at it but this guy is a good professional he has very good skills and a great fighting heart the professional record of Prince Charles Williams
00:07:28in the last 10 years that was the last 10 years that was the last 10 years that was the loss to Henry Maskey of Germany which cost him his IBF light heavyweight championship last year and that came after a year and a half layoff because of a busted left hand which he broke three different times so he does have an excuse
00:07:47meanwhile here is a man who will put no excuses for anything from anybody the perpetually angry James Tony getting ready for his 11th championship fight
00:08:00he is a spectacularly active fighter who generally likes to fight at least once every couple of months he fought within the past two months at 181 pounds winning a 10 round decision in Illinois
00:08:15he's doing it he's doing it the old fashioned way this is his 19th fight since he won the middleweight championship three years ago he keeps improving there's no reason the young athlete who happens to become a champion shouldn't improve every fighter out there should know that lesson
00:08:33right George wait us in no better say it and the record for James Tony 43 wins no losses two draws 28 KOs he can beat you by decision by outboxing you he can slug you out of there if he chooses to do so just a terrific fighter generally regarded as maybe the second best in the sport or the best if you happen to like him better than Pernell Whitaker the lightweight champ or the welterweight champ I should say
00:09:00undefeated champions in the sport there are several but of the top five active undefeated champions you can see that James Tony has had more wins more fights than anybody else
00:09:19arena quiet now as we get ready for the intros for this fight Tony does not like all the attention that is paid to De La Hoya when he fights doubleheaders with him it was the case March 5 in LA and again tonight and here's the tale of the tape you see the seven year difference in age Prince Charles Williams is three inches taller and James Tony struggled to make weight at two o'clock yesterday afternoon three hours before the weigh-in he was a couple pounds over and I want to ask you something about that George does that indicate
00:09:48somehow that he's looked past Prince William that he was two pounds overweight a few hours before the weigh-in yesterday that perhaps he hasn't worked as hard as he should be coming into this fight that he's right to be taken in any way I don't think so I think the guy loves to eat and you see him he eats like a heavyweight they have to hide him hide food hide the refrigerator and I think it's to his benefit he talks about someday fighting as a heavyweight punch that numbers Larry
00:10:15all right let's take a look at the punch that numbers to see how active these fighters are if these numbers hold up you're going to see a lot of punches thrown tonight they're both accurate punchers as well
00:10:24jabs both of them also also throw the jab these are two well-schooled price fighters rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer Harold Letterman James Tony and Prince Charles Williams will box tonight using the rules of the International Boxing Federation
00:10:4012 rounds there is no standing eight count no three knockdown rule you cannot be saved by by the bell in any round including the last only the referee can stop the fight and in case a cut is caused by an accidental headbutt and that cut causes the fight to be stopped we go to the scorecards if the six rounds have been completed before that it's a technical draw Jim let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer for the pre-fight introductions

00:12:42wearing in at 168 pounds from Ann Arbor Michigan his professional record
00:12:4943 victories he has not been defeated he has two draws 28 KOs to his credit
00:12:56considered by many to be pound for pound the best in the world ladies and gentlemen a two time world champion and the current IBF super middleweight champion of the world James
00:13:03the lights out
00:13:10the lights out
00:13:26Lord James
00:13:37All right gentlemen, we want all the rules in the dressing room
00:13:39I win the good cleave fight
00:13:41protect yourself at all time
00:13:43shake your ass good luck
00:13:46Jim, I look upon this as a like
00:13:48weight
00:13:49and the sea fight
00:13:50we're going to wait and see
00:13:53whether Prince Williams can maintain at this weight
00:13:57and whether James Toney is in his best shape.
00:14:02And part of the pressure for Toney tonight, as of this afternoon,
00:14:06if Toney wins, a deal is in place for him to fight on November 19.
00:14:11IBF middleweight champion Roy Jones Jr.,
00:14:14the man that Toney has been stalking for more than a year now.
00:14:18He wants Jones. He gets him November 19 if he can beat Williams tonight.
00:14:22Prince Charles Williams promised to crowd James Toney,
00:14:25and George Foreman, he begins doing exactly that.
00:14:27I think he's doing a fine job of it,
00:14:30because sometimes you just don't crowd a fighter that crafter with heavy shots.
00:14:33Just keep your hands on him, top him.
00:14:37Good right hand over the top by Williams.
00:14:39Referee Joe Cortez telling the fighters to work away from the rope.
00:14:43Williams would like to keep it right here.
00:14:46Williams was able to land a good right hand to the body,
00:14:49which may make a great difference if the round can fight continues.
00:14:52to go for him.
00:14:53Prince Charles Williams doing exactly what he wanted to do early.
00:14:57James Toney not putting up much of a response.
00:15:00Hasn't been able to land a jab yet,
00:15:01so everything works behind Toney's left jab.
00:15:04If it doesn't start working, then he's got to take his time.
00:15:08Toney clearly felt in our discussion with him
00:15:10that he'd be able to handle Williams easily
00:15:12when Williams was away from him
00:15:13and fully expected Prince Charles to crowd him like this.
00:15:17So it seems as though both fighters are getting what they expected in the first round,
00:15:21but Williams likes it better.
00:15:24If Toney is able to periodically just tap him in the middle of the stomach,
00:15:28he'll stop that crowding real quick.
00:15:32James missing the right hand over the top.
00:15:34James Toney has thrown only a few punches so far
00:15:37as he watches Prince Charles Williams work up close.
00:15:41Come on, get those arms out.
00:15:42Come on, we got it, eh?
00:15:44We got it, eh?
00:15:45Come on, get those arms out.
00:15:53Solid right hand by Toney.
00:15:54Backs Williams up for the first time.
00:15:56Now he tries to go to work behind the dead.
00:15:58Williams pushes it back
00:16:06and just doesn't give him any room to work.
00:16:09It's going to take a lot of stamina
00:16:10for Prince Charles to maintain this tactic, right, George?
00:16:13That's true.
00:16:13It would have been beneficial for Prince Charles
00:16:15to have Toney on him like that for a couple of rounds
00:16:17so that he can come on later in the fight.
00:16:19Now he's shooting everything he's got
00:16:21and this may prove to be not too good
00:16:24as the fight continues to go on.
00:16:25He's bigger.
00:16:26We got it.
00:16:26We got it.
00:16:26Come on.
00:16:27We're going to get it.
00:16:27But you're going to have to take a calculated gamble
00:16:29to beat a man like James Toney
00:16:31and clearly for Prince Charles,
00:16:32the gamble is that he can sustain
00:16:34for several rounds in fighting like this.
00:16:37Good right hand over the top.
00:16:39He's going on top of the head.
00:16:41This is what takes out of the good fighters.
00:16:44The guy hitting on top of the head.
00:16:46You mix that with body punching
00:16:47and you're just not going to have the energy to go.
00:16:50Toney lands a left of the body
00:16:52and a left of the head.
00:16:53Once again, breaks out of jail momentarily.
00:16:55Look at it.
00:16:56We're not going to talk about it.
00:16:57It's important that Toney established that,
00:16:59hey, I can win this round to the judges now.
00:17:01It may be a little bit too late.
00:17:03Come on.
00:17:04All right.
00:17:05Time.
00:17:06Go.
00:17:07Tactically, at least,
00:17:08round one belonged to Williams.
00:17:11I wonder who you got to go, you hear?
00:17:13I wonder who you got to go.
00:17:14I wonder who you got to go.
00:17:15Don't eat for that, you hear?
00:17:17I don't need that, you hear?
00:17:18I don't need that, you hear?
00:17:18All right.
00:17:19Don't do it again.
00:17:20Look at that, Gleason.
00:17:21A little give-and-take between James Toney and referee Joe Cortez.
00:17:27Huh?
00:17:27What's wrong?
00:17:27Look at the face.
00:17:28Famous defense attorney Robert Shapiro involved in a heavily publicized case in Los Angeles
00:17:33is here tonight, seated at ringside.
00:17:35A little bit earlier, we captured this shot of him visiting in the dressing room of James Toney
00:17:40and manager Jackie Callen.
00:17:42About a month ago, Jackie Callen arranged for Robert Shapiro to come to a gym in Los Angeles
00:17:48and spar.
00:17:49Believe it or not, spar with James Toney.
00:17:52She says it was the real stuff.
00:17:54He showed up without headgear, without a protective cup, without anything to wrap his hands,
00:17:58just wanted to put the gloves on and bang away at James, and he did it.
00:18:02He tried to hurt James.
00:18:04Is he crazy or what?
00:18:06Oh, yes.
00:18:06They wound up going two-plus rounds, and Shapiro, by his own admission, was exhausted at the end.
00:18:15What the heads inside?
00:18:15What the heads inside?
00:18:20Now round two begins.
00:18:23Oh, we got it.
00:18:24We got it.
00:18:27Tony's going to have to be careful, because he's going to find himself staggering Prince Charles a lot.
00:18:32Don't go for the finish.
00:18:34Just keep the staggering up.
00:18:36What's he going to stagger him with, George?
00:18:38He's going to stagger him just a few years ago with a good right hand.
00:18:42And that's going to be his side of the head, right side of the head.
00:18:46Left side of the head.
00:18:46What the head inside?
00:18:49If they keep standing like this, it'll take a solid uppercut to break the fight open.
00:18:55Here's Tony with a left hook.
00:18:57Now he goes back to the body.
00:18:59And there's a few moments when he finds open space.
00:19:04Tony shows you his remarkable proficiency for accurate punching.
00:19:09This is going to be a hard job for Tony, because he's going to hurt this guy periodically.
00:19:14Don't keep trying for the finish every time you hurt him.
00:19:17Wait until the fight draws on.
00:19:18When you have the freedom.
00:19:24George, does Tony seem strong enough to you to stand up under this constant leaning in?
00:19:31No way.
00:19:32He should not have been allowed to just let this big guy lay on him throughout the fight.
00:19:36Of course, it's said that Tony's been working out with heavyweights in the gym.
00:19:40So he may be prepared for this pushing shift.
00:19:42It really takes it out of you.
00:19:44Your legs get tired.
00:19:45Your knees get weak.
00:19:46Not because of punching, but because the big guy's leaning on you.
00:19:50So if, in fact, when he struggled to make weight yesterday,
00:19:52that was because he had gone a little bit short on the conditioning,
00:19:56it'll show up more quickly under this tactic, right?
00:19:59No, I think going at the last minute losing that weight
00:20:01may mean he'd have a little more strength than the ordinary would.
00:20:04A problem you don't face in the heavyweight division, George,
00:20:11and it's a good thing because we've enjoyed your career.
00:20:30Believe me, this fight is not going the way Tony would like it.
00:20:32He's landing good shots to the side of the body,
00:20:35which he should be to advance a little of the taking a sap out of Prince Charles.
00:20:39But he should be in the middle of that ring a little bit.
00:20:45This is certainly the fight that Prince Charles Williams
00:20:48and his advisors would have drawn up on the drawing board.
00:20:52The fans are booing because this is like a stage play in which all the dialogue,
00:21:11which is a dialogue with fists, is taking place in one corner of the stage.
00:21:15But it's tough and grueling in there.
00:21:17After this round, if we can go back to the outside a little bit and box around it.
00:21:21You hear that?
00:21:22Huh?
00:21:22All right.
00:21:23One thing, if you ain't getting your stuff off the inside,
00:21:27if you're not getting your stuff off the inside, don't hang on that too long.
00:21:32But you've got to pick up your hand speed inside a little bit.
00:21:34You're punching a little bit too slow.
00:21:35All right.
00:21:36Take a look at the hand speed in a little bit.
00:21:38All right.
00:21:39How you feel?
00:21:39Good.
00:21:40All right, baby.
00:21:41Now prove it to me that it'll show me good.
00:21:43Yeah.
00:21:43Prove it to me that it'll show me good.
00:21:45I want you to dig, dig, dig.
00:21:47You understand?
00:21:47I want you to put that left hand underneath,
00:21:49that double left hand underneath,
00:21:50right hand on top.
00:21:51Okay, baby?
00:21:52You can do it for me, can't you?
00:21:53You done did it for both.
00:21:54Now let's go this time.
00:21:56All right, let's go this time.
00:21:57Williams' trainer, his executive trainer, I suppose,
00:22:01is Marty Feldman, who trained Dave to bury the fighter
00:22:05who gave James Toney such a rough time
00:22:07by out-hustling him in that controversial decision
00:22:11three years ago.
00:22:13And they're convinced that a Prince William
00:22:15can punch for three minutes of the round,
00:22:18that James Toney can be out-hustled
00:22:20and you can't steal the rounds from him
00:22:22because he doesn't like to fight for three minutes.
00:22:25That's their theory, and that's what you're watching here.
00:22:28And so far, Prince Charles Williams has every reason
00:22:30or confidence and for feeling good about the way
00:22:34things are going.
00:22:35If you tuned in to see a classic boxing match,
00:22:37this ain't it.
00:22:39The two fighters have thrown a total
00:22:40of a dozen jabs between them
00:22:42in the first two rounds.
00:22:43Hey, what do you got?
00:22:44Give up, put it up, put it up for you guys.
00:22:46Toney was told by his corner to make sure
00:22:48if you're not going to lay on that rope,
00:22:51get something into the body.
00:22:52If not, get out of there.
00:22:55But it's not that easy to get out of the ring
00:22:57with a big guy like that.
00:22:59He's got you on the corner with weight.
00:23:01Why not just step to the left
00:23:05and run away to open space, George?
00:23:06Well, he doesn't want to give him the confidence
00:23:08that, hey, you got me running.
00:23:09So a lot of that is, hey, I'm going to stay here
00:23:11until he's finished doing what he's doing.
00:23:14If I start to run,
00:23:15it can create a whole other fight.
00:23:18Now Tony was able to land a good left jab for a champion.
00:23:21Yeah, but Prince Charles Williams landed one, too.
00:23:24And when they're in open space,
00:23:25the jab is Prince Charles Williams' best weapon.
00:23:29And he's confident he can jab with Tony.
00:23:33If he was that confident, believe me,
00:23:35he wouldn't be pushing him across the ropes.
00:23:38I hear you.
00:23:39Tony's got the quicker jab.
00:23:41And he can get his confidence up
00:23:43by landing a few of his feet.
00:23:44Well, this is a heck of a way
00:23:45to neutralize that quick jab.
00:23:46He's doing a good job of it.
00:23:47I mean, it may not be exciting to the general eye,
00:23:51but this is the way to fight Tony.
00:23:52Keep up, keep up, keep up.
00:23:53Good right up and cut inside by Tony.
00:23:59Hey, come on, put your work out of there.
00:24:00Come on, your hands are free, guys.
00:24:01Come on.
00:24:04All right, Chris, keep up, Chris.
00:24:05Keep up, keep up.
00:24:06You expected James to have the clear edge
00:24:08in punching power, right, George?
00:24:09I expect so,
00:24:10because Chris Charles has had to lose a lot of weight.
00:24:12And once that goes, a lot of the steam.
00:24:14It's like starting off with a sludge hammer
00:24:17and ending up with a big, big kick.
00:24:19Tony has got his power as a middleweight.
00:24:22The lightheaded weight has lost his power.
00:24:23He wouldn't like it.
00:24:25Watch your head inside, Chris.
00:24:26Watch your head inside, Chris.
00:24:29Round three, very much like his two predecessors.
00:24:33Both of you guys here.
00:24:33Very little time spent an open space.
00:24:36Prince Charles Williams locking James Tony up in jail
00:24:39along the ropes and keeping him there.
00:24:41Now, here comes Tony,
00:24:42flurrying back with counter punches inside.
00:24:46But Chris should not allow Tony to get him on the ropes
00:24:49because then he's changed the whole complexion
00:24:52of this whole deal.
00:24:54He was quick to get off the ropes.
00:25:00Tony lashing at Williams
00:25:02as round three comes to a close.
00:25:06Oh, Williams staggered as he went to his corner.
00:25:08This is hand-to-hand
00:25:09and shoulder-to-shoulder combat
00:25:11a war of attrition.
00:25:13That's a war of attrition.
00:25:17Let me find this.
00:25:22That's a war of attrition.
00:25:23That's a war of attrition.
00:25:24When you're digging that hook down there,
00:25:34double it up when you bring it back upstairs.
00:25:37All right?
00:25:38Okay.
00:25:40You go out there,
00:25:41he's trying to back you up all the time.
00:25:43When you go out there,
00:25:44get him with a power jab.
00:25:50Relax a little bit.
00:25:51Keep your hands moving.
00:25:52Keep your hands moving.
00:25:53Okay?
00:25:54Keep working.
00:25:55Keep working, man.
00:25:56Keep working.
00:25:57Keep the pressure.
00:25:59In my view, gentlemen,
00:26:01Tony has taken the initiative
00:26:04in the last couple of rounds.
00:26:06He's fighting Williams' fight,
00:26:08and I think he's starting to beat him at it.
00:26:11That numbers, as you saw,
00:26:13were just about equal.
00:26:13Both fighters landing
00:26:14extraordinarily high percentages
00:26:17of their punches.
00:26:18At this range,
00:26:19one might say,
00:26:20how could they miss?
00:26:21Punch on there.
00:26:21We're good.
00:26:23I think Prince Williams' corner
00:26:26made a mistake telling him
00:26:27to keep it up, keep it up.
00:26:29At some point,
00:26:29you've got to take a breather
00:26:30from that hard,
00:26:32pushing forward,
00:26:32throwing shots,
00:26:33shoulders and all that.
00:26:34You've got to pace a guy like that.
00:26:36You've got to pace him.
00:26:37Well, who works harder,
00:26:38the leaner or the leaner?
00:26:40Believe me, it's worth him
00:26:41in both ways
00:26:42because as he's leaning,
00:26:43Tony is able to occasionally
00:26:45hit him to the side.
00:26:46This just doesn't help your leg
00:26:48nor your wing.
00:26:49And even greater premium
00:26:50on body punching
00:26:51in a fight like this, George?
00:26:52That's true.
00:26:53And so if he,
00:26:54his corner's got to allow him
00:26:56at some point
00:26:56to coast a little bit,
00:26:58recapture yourself,
00:26:59let Tony do some of the burning out.
00:27:01Your hands are free.
00:27:01Archie Moore
00:27:14and a great fighter
00:27:15from Philadelphia.
00:27:17He'll always get into
00:27:17those kind of fights.
00:27:18He'd whip Archie Moore
00:27:19and whip Archie Moore
00:27:20but finally that weight
00:27:21would tire him out
00:27:22and Archie would come on.
00:27:24We're talking about
00:27:25Harold Johnson.
00:27:27Great fighter.
00:27:31Tough job for referee
00:27:36Joe Cortez tonight
00:27:37trying to decide
00:27:38him to disentangle them
00:27:39and when to let him go.
00:27:42For the most part,
00:27:42he's been letting him go.
00:27:44Yeah, this is a spectacular job
00:27:45for Cortez
00:27:46and roughly
00:27:46this is what you call
00:27:48roughly when you have
00:27:49to get in and work
00:27:50for your money.
00:27:59Watch your hands inside, guys.
00:28:01He's got a little bit tighter, right?
00:28:28A lot of time
00:28:29that sound comes before
00:28:30the punch
00:28:31so it gives you time
00:28:31to come up.
00:28:35Really?
00:28:36It's a so hard defense, huh?
00:28:38Yeah.
00:28:38It's the unexpected
00:28:39that hurts you in the box.
00:28:44Solid right hand by Tony.
00:28:47The momentary open space
00:28:49and lunge the right hand
00:28:50through it.
00:28:53The rule is when you're hurt,
00:28:54take it easy,
00:28:55back off a little bit.
00:28:56Now, he's breaking the rule.
00:28:57He gets hurt from Prince Charles
00:28:59and he keeps pouring it on.
00:29:00You can't break the rules
00:29:01like that to the team.
00:29:04Tony getting a chance
00:29:05to flurry
00:29:05at the end of round number four.
00:29:09Well, the entertainment
00:29:10event of a lifetime
00:29:11and event of a lifetime
00:29:11comes to HBO
00:29:12when Barbara Streisand
00:29:13the concert
00:29:14debuts in August
00:29:15with every date sold out
00:29:16on Streisand's first concert tour
00:29:18in nearly three decades.
00:29:20This HBO special
00:29:21will be the only chance
00:29:23for most of us
00:29:24to experience
00:29:24this unique event.
00:29:26Sunday, August 21,
00:29:289 p.m. Eastern,
00:29:29only on HBO.
00:29:31You don't need a ticket.
00:29:32You just need HBO
00:29:33to see Barbara Streisand.
00:29:35Harold Letterman,
00:29:39how do you have it
00:29:39after four rounds?
00:29:40Larry, I've got it
00:29:4138 to 38,
00:29:42two rounds apiece
00:29:43gave the first round
00:29:44and the fourth round
00:29:46to Charles Williams,
00:29:47the middle two
00:29:47to James Toney.
00:29:48Larry, let me tell you something.
00:29:49The reason that this fight
00:29:51is so hard to score
00:29:52is three quarters at a time
00:29:54I'm looking at the guy's back.
00:29:55I'm not seeing a darn thing,
00:29:56but a fight is back.
00:29:58If you're looking at his back
00:29:59or you're looking at the referee,
00:30:00you certainly can't see the punches.
00:30:02This is what's happening to me
00:30:03and this is what's happening
00:30:05to the three guys
00:30:05scoring a fight.
00:30:06It's virtually impossible
00:30:07to see all the shots
00:30:08looking at his back.
00:30:09It's a good insight, Harold,
00:30:11and that's why we have you here.
00:30:13I have it two rounds
00:30:14to one and one even
00:30:15for Tony.
00:30:16For Tony.
00:30:17Did you also give Tony
00:30:19the second and third rounds?
00:30:20Yes, I did.
00:30:21That's the way I see it also.
00:30:24But then I'll see it, bro.
00:30:27Now from our perspective here,
00:30:29you can't see either fighter
00:30:30doing anything.
00:30:32So it's a very, very difficult
00:30:33fight to score.
00:30:35All right, we're going to do it, guys.
00:30:37Come on.
00:30:37At some point,
00:30:38Prince Charles doesn't even
00:30:39care about his stance anymore.
00:30:41He just lays on Tony,
00:30:42drops his legs,
00:30:43put them together
00:30:44and just lies on him.
00:30:47The two fighters pounding away
00:30:49at each other
00:30:49in the corner just above us.
00:30:52If you wanted us to,
00:30:53he could reach out
00:30:53and touch him for you.
00:30:56Come on, get the hot dog.
00:30:57Get him out.
00:30:57What?
00:30:58What guy did it?
00:30:58The phone booth
00:31:00simply moving
00:31:01from one corner
00:31:02to another
00:31:03as each round goes by.
00:31:07Now Tony inching
00:31:08backward along the ropes
00:31:09toward Prince Charles
00:31:11Williams' corner.
00:31:12Now when you start
00:31:13working close like that,
00:31:14you have a tendency
00:31:15to get your head
00:31:16acquainted with the guys.
00:31:17And before you know it,
00:31:19one guy's puffed up
00:31:20more than the other,
00:31:20especially the guy
00:31:21using his head.
00:31:22He'll end up puffing you up
00:31:23not with punches,
00:31:24but with headbutts.
00:31:25Yeah, what about
00:31:26headbutts in here
00:31:27and the possibility
00:31:28of a cut, George?
00:31:29Yeah, it's not so much
00:31:30the butt, it's just
00:31:31the lean of the head
00:31:31continuously on you.
00:31:33Your head is not a glove.
00:31:34The eyebrows of the other guy
00:31:36will cut your face.
00:31:40Charles is keeping
00:31:41his head real close
00:31:42to turning.
00:31:43That's dangerous.
00:31:44Must be awfully easy
00:31:45to get angry at a man
00:31:46when you're this close
00:31:47all the time.
00:31:47Ha, ha, ha.
00:31:49Ha, ha.
00:31:49Ha, ha, ha.
00:31:50Ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:31:51Ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:31:52Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:31:52Chopping right hand inside
00:31:53by Prince Charles Williams.
00:31:57Tony seeming to focus
00:31:59on the body
00:32:00up to the top.
00:32:02When he steps away
00:32:03he looks for the head.
00:32:07Right uppercut landed
00:32:08for James Tony.
00:32:09Punch it work out of there.
00:32:10Punch it work out of there.
00:32:11Punch it work out of there.
00:32:13Punch it work out of there.
00:32:14Come on, let's go.
00:32:16Punch it work out
00:32:17so your hands are free.
00:32:20Come on, work out of there.
00:32:21Come on, punch it work out.
00:32:23Prince Charles Williams
00:32:24consistently executing
00:32:26the fight plan
00:32:27he told us he would use.
00:32:29Crowding James Tony
00:32:30from the opening bell,
00:32:32forcing him against the ropes,
00:32:34forcing him to fight
00:32:35in a tight space.
00:32:37Tony, at first seemingly
00:32:38frustrated by this,
00:32:39has since found
00:32:40a lot of open target.
00:32:43Prince Charles is able
00:32:44to zero in
00:32:45on a swollen side
00:32:46of James Tony.
00:32:47I think it's the left side
00:32:48and that just is not
00:32:49going to help Tony
00:32:50as the fight goes on.
00:32:51And Prince Charles
00:32:53landed a chopping right hand
00:32:54that hurt James Tony
00:32:55momentarily there.
00:32:58Believe me,
00:32:58the swelling on his side
00:33:00was not caused
00:33:01by the punches.
00:33:01It's been caused
00:33:02by the constant
00:33:03touching of the heads.
00:33:05A ripping left hook
00:33:06to the body by Tony
00:33:07as round five
00:33:09comes to a close.
00:33:12All right, guys.
00:33:13This guy's beginning
00:33:14to slow up.
00:33:15Now, we got to...
00:33:16That comes out too fast.
00:33:18Let me see this part.
00:33:19Give him this part.
00:33:20That comes out too fast.
00:33:22Okay.
00:33:28All right, this guy...
00:33:29I want to go clean fight
00:33:30in there.
00:33:30Watch his heads inside,
00:33:31all right?
00:33:31How I'm doing, baby?
00:33:32I got...
00:33:33This man's beginning
00:33:35to slow down.
00:33:36He ain't got too much...
00:33:36Go clean fight in there.
00:33:37Come on,
00:33:37wipe them heads inside,
00:33:38all right?
00:33:38Give me clean fight.
00:33:39All right, let me see.
00:33:40Take your time, bro.
00:33:42All right, how you feel?
00:33:43Yeah.
00:33:43All right, this time
00:33:44I want you to short jab,
00:33:45right hand over the top.
00:33:47Push it to the chopper.
00:33:48Against that rope,
00:33:49fall off the rope
00:33:49with that right hand.
00:33:50Okay, baby?
00:33:51You ready?
00:33:52You ready?
00:33:52We did this before.
00:33:54Now, let's go again.
00:33:55Let's go again.
00:33:55Come on, baby.
00:33:56Come on.
00:33:58Earlier, you may recall
00:33:59I said the question
00:34:00about fighting at 168 pounds,
00:34:04his lowest weight
00:34:05as a professional
00:34:06for a very long time.
00:34:08The question is
00:34:08whether he can sustain it.
00:34:10Can he can fight
00:34:11at this pace
00:34:12at that rate?
00:34:13And so far,
00:34:14that is what is going
00:34:15to determine this fight.
00:34:17The tie has definitely changed.
00:34:19Tony has got his bag
00:34:20up across the rope.
00:34:21He's going to have
00:34:22to fight himself out of it.
00:34:23He's going to have
00:34:23to fight hard.
00:34:24He's not been able
00:34:26to establish a left jab,
00:34:27which means he is
00:34:29in the wrong fight tonight.
00:34:32The left five,
00:34:33James Tony,
00:34:33which is going to work
00:34:35on between rounds.
00:34:37He's the same eye.
00:34:38Which was badly,
00:34:39badly cut
00:34:40by the headbutt
00:34:42of Tim Littles
00:34:42back on March 5
00:34:44in Los Angeles.
00:34:46What you should know
00:34:47is when you lean forward,
00:34:49as Tony is doing now,
00:34:51and a guy straightens you up
00:34:53from that leaning position,
00:34:54it's like doing
00:34:55too many push-ups sit-ups.
00:34:58It can really tire you out.
00:35:00And that's what
00:35:00Chris Charles is doing.
00:35:02He's bringing him
00:35:02from the leaning position
00:35:03back up
00:35:04to the standing position.
00:35:05That hurts.
00:35:06Good accurate bunting
00:35:14inside by Tony there.
00:35:16Prince Charles Williams
00:35:17has also been busy
00:35:18in this round.
00:35:19Through the first five rounds,
00:35:21Williams threw
00:35:2223 more power punches
00:35:24than Tony.
00:35:25He's been able
00:35:26to stay busy,
00:35:27work at a high rate
00:35:29while leaning in inside.
00:35:31Tough fight to score,
00:35:32as Harold Letterman
00:35:33has already pointed out.
00:35:35A half away
00:35:37from the midway point.
00:35:38Come on, Tony.
00:35:39Come on, Tony.
00:35:40Come on, Tony.
00:35:40Come on.
00:35:41We're falling, man.
00:35:42Go for it.
00:35:42Yeah, let's get out.
00:35:43Let's get out.
00:35:43Let's get out.
00:35:44Let's get out.
00:35:44Let's get out.
00:35:44We're falling.
00:35:44We remind you,
00:35:45James Tony needs
00:35:46to win this fight
00:35:47to make a reality
00:35:48of a November 19 date
00:35:50with IVF midway champion
00:35:52Roy Jones Jr.
00:35:54There's been a lot
00:35:55of talk between the two.
00:35:57Apparent bad blood,
00:35:58a fight that everybody
00:35:59in boxing wants to see.
00:36:01But James has to win
00:36:02this fight first
00:36:02to make it happen.
00:36:03Between rounds,
00:36:04we'll be talking
00:36:05with Roy Jones.
00:36:07We got it.
00:36:08We got it, guys.
00:36:09We got it.
00:36:09We got it.
00:36:09Your hands are free, guys.
00:36:14Right back.
00:36:15Right back.
00:36:16We got it.
00:36:16Your hands are free, guys.
00:36:17Come on.
00:36:17We got it.
00:36:18Come on.
00:36:19George, to my eyes,
00:36:20at least,
00:36:20Williams hasn't slowed down
00:36:22much yet.
00:36:22Not at all.
00:36:23As a matter of fact,
00:36:24he seems to have
00:36:24captured his second win.
00:36:26And if he continues...
00:36:27Now Tony is establishing
00:36:28a left jail,
00:36:29which is his best fight.
00:36:31Ogrehand right by Tony
00:36:32landed flush
00:36:33on Prince Charles
00:36:34Williams' jump.
00:36:36Get out of here.
00:36:36Don't be on the bridge.
00:36:37Go on, Prince.
00:36:38Get out of there.
00:36:38If it's going to happen
00:36:39for Tony,
00:36:40it's going to happen
00:36:40behind that left jail.
00:36:47Another right hand
00:36:48by Tony.
00:36:49Let's go.
00:36:49Crowd beginning
00:36:50to get more interested
00:36:51as for a few moments
00:36:52at least,
00:36:52they fight in open space.
00:36:54Let him out,
00:36:55let him out, Prince.
00:37:01At this distance,
00:37:03James Tony appears
00:37:05the more skilled fighter.
00:37:06That's no big surprise,
00:37:08but the left eye
00:37:08is swollen almost shut
00:37:11for James Tony
00:37:12as he goes back
00:37:13to his court.
00:37:14Town, town, town, town.
00:37:15Just keep pushing the punches.
00:37:18Shut down, okay?
00:37:19Don't hit me to me
00:37:20in the crazy sack, right?
00:37:21Shut it down.
00:37:23Don't hit too much
00:37:24around.
00:37:24Shut it down, okay?
00:37:26Here, finally getting
00:37:27some distance.
00:37:28Tony throws that right hand,
00:37:29lands it flush
00:37:30on the jaw.
00:37:31But except for that
00:37:32brief exchange
00:37:34between them,
00:37:35this has been like
00:37:36a football game
00:37:37in which close lines
00:37:39are banging away
00:37:40at each other,
00:37:41trying to sustain
00:37:43mastery.
00:37:45Yep, this has been
00:37:47Michigan, Ohio State
00:37:48up to this point
00:37:49in cold weather.
00:37:51And meanwhile,
00:37:52we told you about
00:37:52Roy Jones
00:37:53and the date
00:37:54with James Tony,
00:37:55potentially November 19.
00:37:57Roy?
00:37:58How you doing?
00:37:58How you doing?
00:37:59Welcome to ringside.
00:38:00What prompts you
00:38:01to be willing
00:38:03to surrender
00:38:03your IBF middleweight
00:38:04championship
00:38:05for the chance
00:38:06to fight Tony
00:38:06at 168?
00:38:07Well, it's not
00:38:09for sure
00:38:09that I am going
00:38:10to have to surrender
00:38:10my title
00:38:11because I do
00:38:13have a fight
00:38:13that King has won
00:38:14the bid with
00:38:15Bernard Hopkins.
00:38:17But Tony says
00:38:18he wants to fight
00:38:18me real bad
00:38:19and if that's so,
00:38:20I mean,
00:38:20I don't want to ever
00:38:21appear that I'm
00:38:21running from anybody
00:38:22so I'd be able
00:38:23to get my title
00:38:24up to take this one.
00:38:25This doesn't seem
00:38:25like it's going
00:38:26to be an easy
00:38:27title to take
00:38:28but I know I can
00:38:29because I am the man.
00:38:30He says he doesn't
00:38:30like you.
00:38:31He says he doesn't
00:38:32like all of the glory
00:38:33you've received
00:38:34as a past Olympic star.
00:38:35You feel the same
00:38:36way about him?
00:38:37He don't have any glory
00:38:38that I think
00:38:38that I should be jealous
00:38:39of because right now,
00:38:40like I said,
00:38:40I am the man.
00:38:41He's upset because
00:38:42I am the man
00:38:43and he's not
00:38:43and he has to come
00:38:44and beat the man
00:38:44to be the man.
00:38:45What do you think
00:38:46about the fight
00:38:46you're watching
00:38:46right here?
00:38:47It's a good sluggish
00:38:48fight because
00:38:49Prince Charles
00:38:50is pushing issues
00:38:50so much.
00:38:51He went out,
00:38:51he got coached
00:38:52Tony,
00:38:52made Tony tired
00:38:53early.
00:38:54Now,
00:38:54Tony is the better
00:38:55boxer with the hands
00:38:56but the pressure
00:38:57is making it
00:38:58very difficult
00:38:58because Prince
00:38:59is staying
00:38:59so close to him.
00:39:01With him staying
00:39:02that close,
00:39:02Tony is unable
00:39:03to land
00:39:04in real real
00:39:04power shots
00:39:05and it's being
00:39:06a difficult fight
00:39:07for Tony.
00:39:07That was an overhand
00:39:08but then he stops
00:39:10so it's going to tell
00:39:12what can happen.
00:39:13Prince Charles' eyes
00:39:13messed up now too
00:39:14but maybe Prince
00:39:15Charles is starting
00:39:16to slow a little bit.
00:39:17He does it overhand
00:39:18right that again
00:39:18does some damage
00:39:19as James gets some space
00:39:20and once again
00:39:22begins to open up.
00:39:22Final question,
00:39:23Roy,
00:39:24you lose a chance
00:39:25at a big payday
00:39:26if Prince Charles
00:39:27Williams wins the fight.
00:39:28You got to be
00:39:28rooting for Tony
00:39:29to win.
00:39:30Yes,
00:39:30I definitely want
00:39:31Tony to win the fight
00:39:32because Tony wants
00:39:33to showdown
00:39:33against the man,
00:39:34Roy John Jr.
00:39:35and I think
00:39:35it's prominent
00:39:37that he get it.
00:39:37There's no sense
00:39:39in him having
00:39:39to go up
00:39:40and wait
00:39:40before you get
00:39:41a chance
00:39:41to try it.
00:39:42The person
00:39:42that he admires
00:39:42most.
00:39:43Another good
00:39:44right hand
00:39:44inside by Tony.
00:39:45Roy,
00:39:45thanks very much
00:39:46for your time.
00:39:47Thank you very much
00:39:47to see you
00:39:47down the road.
00:39:48All right.
00:39:49All right.
00:39:50Roy Jones Jr.,
00:39:51IVF middleweight champion,
00:39:53potentially an opponent
00:39:54down the road
00:39:55for James Tony.
00:39:56Now let's get back
00:39:57to the action
00:39:57where George,
00:39:58the left eye
00:39:59of Prince Charles
00:39:59Williams
00:40:00is suddenly in trouble.
00:40:01That's right.
00:40:02Tony is taking
00:40:02control of it.
00:40:05How is he taking
00:40:06control?
00:40:06Well, he's starting
00:40:07to use his left jab
00:40:08and throw that right
00:40:09hand right over top.
00:40:10If he can continue
00:40:11to do that
00:40:11without this bumping
00:40:12and shoving football
00:40:13stuff, he could
00:40:14take control of this
00:40:15fight.
00:40:16He's landing
00:40:16important body shots,
00:40:18left hooks to the body.
00:40:19Tony is doing
00:40:20everything right,
00:40:20but he may have
00:40:21started it a little
00:40:22too late.
00:40:22Is it because of
00:40:23James' bodywork inside
00:40:25that Williams has
00:40:26chosen to back up
00:40:27and leave room
00:40:27on a few occasions?
00:40:28That's right.
00:40:29When you keep
00:40:29hitting a guy
00:40:30underneath that body,
00:40:31underneath those ribs,
00:40:32at some point,
00:40:32you've got to stop
00:40:33and protect yourself
00:40:34and cover up
00:40:34and stop that hurting.
00:40:36And it's opening up
00:40:37things good for
00:40:38James Tony.
00:40:40James Tony trying
00:40:41to show us
00:40:41he can win
00:40:42one more way.
00:40:44He's done it
00:40:44here on HBO
00:40:46just about every way
00:40:47imaginable.
00:40:49James Tony is
00:40:50measuring it
00:40:51and taking
00:40:52more conservative
00:40:53with his power.
00:40:55He lands two good
00:40:56shots.
00:40:56He doesn't go
00:40:56for four or five.
00:40:58He goes back
00:40:58to two good ones
00:40:59because if he
00:41:00burns himself
00:41:00out of pressure,
00:41:01he's in trouble.
00:41:04I thought that
00:41:05was a terrific
00:41:05round for Tony.
00:41:07Look,
00:41:08any fighter,
00:41:09no matter how
00:41:10good he is,
00:41:10can't just have
00:41:11his way out there.
00:41:12It depends what
00:41:13the opponent is doing.
00:41:14He's fighting
00:41:15a good opponent
00:41:15who is putting
00:41:17all that pressure
00:41:18on him and he's
00:41:18standing up to him
00:41:19and now he's
00:41:20getting his distance
00:41:21because he was
00:41:22able to stand
00:41:23up to him.
00:41:27James,
00:41:28how's the vision
00:41:28in that left eye?
00:41:29All good,
00:41:29baby.
00:41:43The commission
00:41:44doctor has just
00:41:45taken a look
00:41:45at Prince William's
00:41:47eye and said
00:41:48something to the
00:41:48referee.
00:41:49I'm President
00:41:50all good.
00:41:50You can smell a
00:41:51little bit.
00:41:51I did.
00:41:53Watch your
00:41:54head, baby.
00:41:54All right,
00:41:55seconds out.
00:41:57Seconds out.
00:41:57A little more
00:42:06boxing in round
00:42:07seven than had
00:42:08been the case
00:42:08up to that point.
00:42:10James Toney has
00:42:10now managed to land
00:42:1113 jabs in the fight.
00:42:13As round eight
00:42:14begins,
00:42:15they go back
00:42:16inside and very
00:42:17quickly,
00:42:18right here in the
00:42:18early stages of
00:42:19round eight,
00:42:19we turn to
00:42:20Harold Letterman
00:42:20for his scorecard.
00:42:21Harold,
00:42:21how you got it?
00:42:22Jim,
00:42:2267,
00:42:2366,
00:42:24four rounds to
00:42:25three.
00:42:25James Toney,
00:42:26he clearly won
00:42:27round six and
00:42:27seven by stepping
00:42:28back to landing
00:42:29hard right hands
00:42:30that we saw.
00:42:30And I'll tell you,
00:42:31up until the sixth
00:42:32round,
00:42:32three quarters of the
00:42:33punches,
00:42:33we didn't see
00:42:34what we saw
00:42:34as a guy's back.
00:42:35But I think that
00:42:36James is starting
00:42:36to step back,
00:42:37starting to get
00:42:38the distance
00:42:38and land the
00:42:38hard right
00:42:39and take control
00:42:39of the fight.
00:42:44I think James
00:42:45Toney is a better
00:42:46fighter than even
00:42:46he thinks himself
00:42:47that he is.
00:42:48But I think he
00:42:49proves that virtually
00:42:50every time out,
00:42:51because he faces
00:42:52so many different
00:42:53kinds of challenges
00:42:54and finds a way
00:42:55to win.
00:42:56I'm amazed.
00:42:57I'm truly amazed.
00:42:59Not to say he's
00:43:00won his fight,
00:43:01not by a long shot.
00:43:02Your hands are
00:43:03working out there.
00:43:04Come on,
00:43:04your hands are
00:43:04free, let's go.
00:43:05Let's go home.
00:43:07Another thing
00:43:08you've got to love
00:43:09about him,
00:43:09he's active
00:43:10because he's
00:43:11willing to fight
00:43:12tough opposition.
00:43:13James Toney
00:43:13doesn't run scared
00:43:14from anybody,
00:43:15Roy Jones Jr.
00:43:16included.
00:43:19Come on,
00:43:20get him out of there,
00:43:20guys.
00:43:20Come on,
00:43:21you're hitting him
00:43:21free.
00:43:21Let's go.
00:43:21Come on,
00:43:22let him out,
00:43:22come on.
00:43:23All right,
00:43:24break out,
00:43:24break out,
00:43:24come on,
00:43:25break out.
00:43:25A little bit
00:43:25of a breather
00:43:26round so far
00:43:26in round eight
00:43:27for both
00:43:29Toney and Williams.
00:43:30Not quite as
00:43:30active a round
00:43:31as was round seven.
00:43:33Right up for
00:43:34cut by Williams,
00:43:35backs Toney up
00:43:36into the corner.
00:43:37Let's go,
00:43:39we're going there.
00:43:40Another body
00:43:42flurry by Toney.
00:43:44Both fighters
00:43:45have shown
00:43:45guts and grit
00:43:47and commitment.
00:43:49That's what
00:43:49Prince Charles
00:43:50don't want to be
00:43:51on the end
00:43:51of Toney's shot.
00:43:52He's got to
00:43:53keep that distance
00:43:53about a foot away
00:43:55and don't lose it.
00:43:57Now the crowd
00:43:58begins as
00:43:59for Chad Toney,
00:44:00Toney,
00:44:00Toney.
00:44:06Williams takes
00:44:06just a little bit
00:44:07longer to wind up
00:44:08and deliver the
00:44:09jab than is the
00:44:10case with James.
00:44:12He's out there
00:44:12working on the
00:44:13territory now.
00:44:15His fighters
00:44:16stand there
00:44:16even if you don't
00:44:17have the punching,
00:44:18just stay close.
00:44:18Prince,
00:44:19let him go,
00:44:19Prince.
00:44:19Come on,
00:44:20Prince.
00:44:20Let him go there.
00:44:22Come on,
00:44:22work out of there.
00:44:25Look at your head.
00:44:26Double left up right here.
00:44:28Work out.
00:44:28Work out.
00:44:32Work out.
00:44:36Work out.
00:44:36Work out of there.
00:44:39Now Toney should
00:44:41manage to stay
00:44:41on the side
00:44:42of the ropes
00:44:42and allow
00:44:43Williams to
00:44:44circle him
00:44:45and just keep
00:44:46throwing punches
00:44:46as he's going
00:44:47backwards
00:44:47rather than just
00:44:49laying on the ropes.
00:44:52Now he's decided
00:44:52to do it.
00:44:53Let's go backwards.
00:44:56It's like a moving
00:44:57punching bag
00:44:57into you.
00:45:04And after the
00:45:05foul right hand
00:45:06by Toney.
00:45:07Take no point.
00:45:08Take no point.
00:45:08Take no point.
00:45:09And Joe
00:45:10Cortez
00:45:10elects to take
00:45:11a point away.
00:45:15So any and all
00:45:17good work
00:45:17that Toney
00:45:18had done
00:45:18in that round
00:45:19is squandered
00:45:20by that punch
00:45:21after the bell.
00:45:23But I think
00:45:24he didn't cause it.
00:45:25It was Prince Charles
00:45:25who initiated that.
00:45:27As soon as the bell rang,
00:45:28boom, he got Tony.
00:45:29It's picked up
00:45:30or she done.
00:45:31Yeah, but Toney
00:45:32retaliated, George.
00:45:33Yeah, man.
00:45:34So these young fighters,
00:45:35hey, they're not going to
00:45:36give you an edge like that.
00:45:37You've got to pay them back.
00:45:38He's got to pay them back.
00:45:39Let's take another listen
00:45:41to the end of round eight.
00:45:46Let's take another listen
00:45:46to the end of round eight.
00:45:51See?
00:45:53Prince Charles initiated it,
00:45:54so I think that the referee
00:45:56may have missed it,
00:45:57been on the wrong side.
00:45:58He would have taken a point
00:45:59from each
00:45:59or not take a point at all.
00:46:01I agree, George.
00:46:02I think he jumped the gun
00:46:03in a little bit.
00:46:06Nevertheless,
00:46:07it costs Tony a point
00:46:08and makes it
00:46:10still anybody's fight
00:46:12or so it would appear to us
00:46:14going into the ninth.
00:46:20Get him out of there.
00:46:21Get him out of there.
00:46:31Tony is doing something
00:46:32very interesting.
00:46:33moves farther
00:46:34and on the rope
00:46:35on the left side
00:46:36of his opponent,
00:46:38making him push
00:46:38with that left hand
00:46:39so he has the dead
00:46:40in that left jab.
00:46:44That's pretty subtle stuff,
00:46:46George.
00:46:46That's what you do.
00:46:47You stay on the left side
00:46:48and make him
00:46:49dead in that hand
00:46:50so it moves a lot
00:46:51of the reflexes
00:46:52out of it.
00:46:53Keep moving to the left.
00:46:54You go to the head
00:47:03in here, George,
00:47:04or just keep sticking
00:47:05to the body.
00:47:08Tony is doing real good.
00:47:09He's staying down
00:47:10to the body,
00:47:11landing good
00:47:11in part of the shot.
00:47:12Then he comes back up
00:47:13to finish it all up.
00:47:14Prince William
00:47:15is doing his fight.
00:47:16He's staying close.
00:47:17He keeps Tony away
00:47:17from turning
00:47:18at the right hand
00:47:18on what he likes to do.
00:47:20Tony ends up
00:47:21chopping him with it.
00:47:22That doesn't hurt
00:47:22as much as that
00:47:23long right hand.
00:47:25Joe Cortez
00:47:26broke him apart
00:47:27momentarily.
00:47:28James Tony tried
00:47:28to keep Prince Charles
00:47:29winning his way
00:47:30with a jab.
00:47:31Charles just pulled
00:47:32him into the ropes.
00:47:34The right hand
00:47:34misses inside
00:47:35for Williams.
00:47:36He would have done
00:47:36some damage
00:47:37if it had landed.
00:47:37Punch it work out.
00:47:38Punch it work out of that.
00:47:39Oh, we're holding
00:47:41inside, guys.
00:47:42We're holding inside.
00:47:42You see Tony's eyes
00:48:04start to swell
00:48:04when the other guy
00:48:05keeps his head
00:48:06right on Tony's
00:48:07left eye.
00:48:09He's not doing it
00:48:09with punches.
00:48:10He's swelling them up
00:48:10by leaning on his head.
00:48:12Come on.
00:48:16He'll beat the Tony
00:48:17that finished
00:48:18turning the other
00:48:19side of his cheek
00:48:19here to the other
00:48:21still on that side
00:48:22for a while.
00:48:24But maybe he wouldn't
00:48:25see what he wants
00:48:26to see if he did that.
00:48:27But he would
00:48:28totally upon it
00:48:28I'll just do
00:48:29something different
00:48:30for a while.
00:48:31Punch it work out.
00:48:32Punch it work out.
00:48:32Old trick there.
00:48:33Lay on the guy's eye.
00:48:34Solid right hand
00:48:35by Tony.
00:48:36Good left uppercut
00:48:37as well.
00:48:38We're holding inside.
00:48:39Get him out of there.
00:48:43Come on.
00:48:43Let's go.
00:48:44Get him out.
00:48:46Get him out.
00:48:46Get him out.
00:48:51A little breathing
00:48:52space for Tony.
00:48:53He tries a left
00:48:54and a right.
00:48:56Williams misses
00:48:57over the top
00:48:57to the right
00:48:58lands a left hand.
00:49:03Tony flurrying again
00:49:05just as the round
00:49:06came to a close.
00:49:07next month
00:49:08incidentally
00:49:08here on HBO
00:49:09the return of
00:49:10Riddick Bowe
00:49:10former champion's
00:49:12first fight
00:49:12it's his stunning
00:49:13defeat at the hands
00:49:14of Evander Holyfield
00:49:16last November.
00:49:17Don't miss
00:49:18the comeback
00:49:18Riddick Bowe
00:49:19versus Buster
00:49:20Mathis Jr.
00:49:21Saturday August 13
00:49:22live on HBO.
00:49:24That's right
00:49:25Buster Mathis Jr.
00:49:28Riddick Bowe
00:49:28August 13.
00:49:30A little water buggy.
00:49:31Water buggy.
00:49:32Water buggy.
00:49:32Water buggy.
00:49:34Why are you trying?
00:49:35Yeah I hit him.
00:49:35Go.
00:49:36I hit him hard.
00:49:37I hit him hard.
00:49:37I hit him hard.
00:49:37I hit him hard.
00:49:37I hit him hard.
00:49:38Relax this thing.
00:49:39Relax okay.
00:49:40Relax him.
00:49:40Don't get hit okay.
00:49:42Just keep going.
00:49:42You can stand open
00:49:43and take it.
00:49:43But don't punch.
00:49:45Okay.
00:49:45Don't punch.
00:49:47You can come on strong.
00:49:48Alright.
00:49:52I'm off the roof.
00:49:53Let's move.
00:49:54Alright circuit's out.
00:49:55I'm not sure
00:49:55what I'm hearing
00:49:56from that corner
00:49:57from Prince
00:49:58Williams corner.
00:49:58Don't punch.
00:49:59They're saying
00:50:00to him.
00:50:01Either they think
00:50:02he's awfully tired
00:50:03and they want to
00:50:04give him a round
00:50:04to rest
00:50:05to finish strong
00:50:06or I just
00:50:08don't get it.
00:50:09Let's see what
00:50:09they do
00:50:10and we'll be able
00:50:11to interpret that.
00:50:12I think that's
00:50:13exactly it.
00:50:13I think they want him
00:50:14to try to take
00:50:15a breather in this round
00:50:16and finish strong
00:50:17in the 11th from 12th.
00:50:18Do you think so George?
00:50:19No doubt about it.
00:50:19At some point or another
00:50:20he had to take a breather
00:50:22but at this time
00:50:23I don't think it's going
00:50:24to help him that much
00:50:25because if Tony continues
00:50:26to win this round
00:50:27and pile off points
00:50:28it's going to cost him
00:50:29this round
00:50:29and it's very important
00:50:30to take initiative
00:50:31win it
00:50:32clearly
00:50:32then the judges
00:50:33are going to have
00:50:33some cause to wonder
00:50:35who won this round.
00:50:36Yeah.
00:50:37How many points
00:50:37is he piling up
00:50:38in a tough fight
00:50:39to score
00:50:39as Hal Letterman
00:50:40has pointed out
00:50:41in a fight
00:50:41where he's lost a point
00:50:42because of a punch
00:50:43after the bell.
00:50:44Yeah but you cannot
00:50:45wait man
00:50:45hold off
00:50:46because if he wins
00:50:47this round
00:50:47convincingly Tony
00:50:48it's in the judges
00:50:49and they're going
00:50:50to give it to him.
00:50:52I don't know
00:50:52where they gave him
00:50:53that advice.
00:50:53Well if he stays busy
00:50:54he's going to win
00:50:55this round convincingly
00:50:56because Williams
00:50:57appears content
00:50:58to listen to his
00:50:59corner's advice
00:50:59and isn't throwing
00:51:00as many punches
00:51:01as was the case before.
00:51:04Too bad Tony
00:51:05didn't hear
00:51:05what Prince Williams
00:51:07corner told him.
00:51:08And that seems
00:51:09to be an acknowledgement
00:51:10of the fact
00:51:11that it's very difficult
00:51:12to sustain this pace
00:51:13under any event
00:51:15but after you've
00:51:17taken weight off
00:51:18as much as he's
00:51:19taken it's even harder.
00:51:20That's true.
00:51:21Because even though
00:51:22we have air conditioning
00:51:23here the heat
00:51:24is creeping in
00:51:25in this arena.
00:51:27Unbelievable heat.
00:51:29It was 110 degrees
00:51:30outside yesterday
00:51:31110 degrees
00:51:33outside again today.
00:51:34It's a real 110.
00:51:35It's not the so-called
00:51:36dry heat
00:51:37that you can't feel.
00:51:38It's aggressive.
00:51:40It was so hot
00:51:40I went into the sauna
00:51:41to cool off Jim.
00:51:43You'd sooner be
00:51:45in a sauna.
00:51:48No doubt
00:51:49Chris Williams
00:51:50is going to try it all
00:51:51in the next two rounds
00:51:52but hey
00:51:52the judges
00:51:53are going to be
00:51:53looking at this round
00:51:54more than the next two rounds.
00:51:56Just to confirm
00:51:57incidentally
00:51:57we are indoors tonight
00:51:59amid glorious air conditioning
00:52:01but still
00:52:02it's hot.
00:52:03Tony is doing a job
00:52:18he's landing hard shots
00:52:19to make Prince Williams
00:52:20make him throw some hard shots
00:52:21so he'll be winning
00:52:22the next round.
00:52:23It's the first
00:52:24genuinely easy round
00:52:26of the fight
00:52:26for the champion
00:52:27James Toney.
00:52:30Williams has thrown some
00:52:32but has mostly missed.
00:52:33Tony far busier
00:52:34in this round
00:52:35and landing effectively.
00:52:37And smart enough
00:52:38to do a lot of faking
00:52:39more so than throwing punches.
00:52:41He'll land two shots
00:52:41and then fake like
00:52:42he's doing a lot.
00:52:43The judges may
00:52:44see that
00:52:45that's throwing shots.
00:52:46Williams seemed
00:52:55in the last minute
00:52:56of the round
00:52:56to realize that
00:52:57perhaps he was
00:52:58giving away too much
00:52:59went back to throwing
00:53:00more punches
00:53:01but by that time
00:53:02the damage may have
00:53:04been done
00:53:04as James Toney
00:53:05appears to take
00:53:07round 10
00:53:07in what could be
00:53:08a very close fight.
00:53:11Not on my scorecard Jim.
00:53:15Not close.
00:53:16I think Tony
00:53:17has beaten him
00:53:18in his own game.
00:53:20Harold Letterman
00:53:20do you think
00:53:21Tony is beating
00:53:22Williams in his own game?
00:53:23Larry I've got it
00:53:246-3-1 even
00:53:2596-93
00:53:27James Toney.
00:53:28I mean
00:53:29from round 6 on
00:53:30he's landing
00:53:31the crisp hard
00:53:32right hands.
00:53:33You know
00:53:33the fight has really
00:53:34been fought in the trenches.
00:53:35I mean
00:53:35you know
00:53:35toe-to-toe
00:53:36head-to-head
00:53:36but every time
00:53:38James has stepped back
00:53:39from the 6th round on
00:53:39he's landed the shots
00:53:41that grabbed the judge's eyes
00:53:42and if you watch
00:53:43the three judges
00:53:43they're really straining
00:53:44to see these guys
00:53:45because they're leaning
00:53:46on each other.
00:53:46But I'll tell you
00:53:47from 6 on
00:53:48it seems to be
00:53:48Tony's right hand.
00:53:50George you in sync
00:53:50with these guys?
00:53:52Definitely.
00:53:52I see it the same way.
00:53:54I think we'll see
00:53:55a desperation round
00:53:57by Prince William
00:53:58here to make
00:53:58something happen.
00:54:00It's Prince Charles.
00:54:02Prince William
00:54:02Prince Charles.
00:54:03There you have it.
00:54:21Prince Charles has started
00:54:40to pick up the pace
00:54:41but he's not going to get
00:54:42a knockout in that fashion.
00:54:44That 10th round
00:54:45was a very important round
00:54:46he should have taken
00:54:47charge more so.
00:54:48Well he did what his
00:54:49corner told him to do
00:54:50or so it would appear
00:54:51and he's using the energy
00:54:53now.
00:54:55Tony is sticking
00:54:55right with him
00:54:56as you see.
00:54:57Tony is like
00:54:58some of those
00:54:58good basketball players.
00:54:59They'll go through
00:55:00you to bump him
00:55:00then they shoot.
00:55:02He's waiting for them.
00:55:03If you don't bump him
00:55:04he's not going to throw
00:55:05a lot to you.
00:55:05Come on, come on Prince.
00:55:06Come on, Prince.
00:55:07Let him go, Johnny.
00:55:08Let him go!
00:55:09George, I didn't know
00:55:10you were a basketball
00:55:11aficionado.
00:55:12I just learned
00:55:13how to bump him.
00:55:15Well you're from Houston
00:55:16everybody from Houston
00:55:17is a basketball
00:55:18aficionado now.
00:55:19These days anyway.
00:55:20Is there anyone
00:55:20who doubts that
00:55:21George's style
00:55:22would play well
00:55:23in the NBA
00:55:23the way the game
00:55:24is being played
00:55:25right now?
00:55:31Halfway through
00:55:32round 11.
00:55:34Solid round
00:55:35so far for Tony
00:55:36even though
00:55:36Prince Charles
00:55:37Williams
00:55:37has tried to be
00:55:38active again.
00:55:39and there was
00:55:39a good right hand
00:55:40inside by the champion.
00:55:42Tony is very smart.
00:55:44He's using the
00:55:44power right hand
00:55:45in the last couple
00:55:46rounds.
00:55:49Finding
00:55:49punching range
00:55:50now.
00:55:51Williams apparently
00:55:52too tired
00:55:53to go in
00:55:53and lean on
00:55:54Tony as he did
00:55:54throughout most
00:55:55of the fight
00:55:56and James
00:55:56Tony taking
00:55:57maximum advantage.
00:55:59Which is great
00:55:59because when
00:56:00William was coasting
00:56:01Tony coasted
00:56:02too.
00:56:02Now the coasting
00:56:03is over.
00:56:04Tony decided
00:56:04I'm giving you
00:56:05something to add
00:56:06to you.
00:56:07A wasting of
00:56:08energy
00:56:08which was very
00:56:09small.
00:56:09He did not
00:56:10try to land
00:56:10a power punch
00:56:11when William
00:56:12was coasting
00:56:12and he just
00:56:13died.
00:56:13he slips a punch
00:56:20there.
00:56:21Ducks another
00:56:21one there
00:56:22and keeps
00:56:23coming back
00:56:23with brilliant
00:56:24counter punches
00:56:25of his own.
00:56:26It's amazing
00:56:26to see a young
00:56:27fellow that's
00:56:28amazing.
00:56:29You just don't
00:56:30see that often.
00:56:31He's young
00:56:32and he's crap.
00:56:33I don't understand
00:56:34how he's
00:56:35got that.
00:56:35watching all
00:56:37those old
00:56:37as it shows
00:56:38how could he
00:56:41have known
00:56:41that Chris
00:56:42was coasting
00:56:43in the previous
00:56:44round.
00:56:44It's amazing.
00:56:49I didn't hear his
00:56:50call to tell him
00:56:51about it.
00:56:52James Tony
00:56:53beginning to take
00:56:54command in round
00:56:5511.
00:56:56Solid left
00:56:57right combinations
00:56:58carrying the
00:56:59round for the
00:56:59champion.
00:57:00I want one
00:57:11more round like
00:57:12that.
00:57:13I want one
00:57:14more round like
00:57:15that and we'll go
00:57:16away from here
00:57:16with our belt.
00:57:17Last round.
00:57:18Bring him in.
00:57:21Last round.
00:57:22Last round we
00:57:23touch him up.
00:57:26Touch with one
00:57:26hand baby.
00:57:28Touch with one
00:57:28hand.
00:57:29Give the other
00:57:29hand high.
00:57:30Okay.
00:57:35I want it.
00:57:36I got to have
00:57:37it.
00:57:39All right.
00:57:40Give me three
00:57:40minutes like that.
00:57:42I must have it.
00:57:43You're the boss.
00:57:45You're the house.
00:57:47Give me three
00:57:49minutes now.
00:57:51Keep the hand
00:57:52moving.
00:57:52Let's repeat
00:57:53history.
00:57:54Let's repeat
00:57:54history baby.
00:57:55Come on.
00:57:56Bill Miller
00:57:59said about
00:57:59the prince here.
00:58:04You can't cook
00:58:05with old grease.
00:58:07And right now
00:58:08the old grease
00:58:09is looking a bit
00:58:10like old grease.
00:58:12And Tony is doing
00:58:13the cooking.
00:58:14He felt the wrong
00:58:15fight for the wrong
00:58:17part of it.
00:58:17This is the time you
00:58:18want to stay close
00:58:19in the lateral round.
00:58:20Build up your points
00:58:21early on with nice
00:58:21long jab.
00:58:22You have a greater
00:58:23reach.
00:58:23He didn't do so.
00:58:24Well they were operating
00:58:26under the theory
00:58:27that you could out
00:58:28hustle James, Tony.
00:58:29Maybe you could a couple
00:58:30years ago or three years
00:58:31ago before he moved up
00:58:32to this weight where he's
00:58:33so comfortable.
00:58:34but that's awfully tough
00:58:35now.
00:58:37You're absolutely
00:58:38true.
00:58:39This guy is not only
00:58:40energetic but he is
00:58:42also crafty.
00:58:43It just doesn't go with
00:58:44him.
00:58:44In the 11th round
00:58:47Tony threw 90 punches
00:58:48to 59 for Williams.
00:58:50By stepping up
00:58:51his activity level
00:58:52in the second half
00:58:53of the fight
00:58:54James, Tony has
00:58:55seized command.
00:59:00Now he has Williams
00:59:01following him around
00:59:02right into his right
00:59:03hand.
00:59:03Whenever he wants
00:59:04to deliver it,
00:59:05it's there for him.
00:59:06And Tony's superior
00:59:07skills as a counter
00:59:08puncher can play
00:59:10into this situation
00:59:11perfectly.
00:59:15Both corners did
00:59:16a great job
00:59:17on fixing the eyes.
00:59:20Good point.
00:59:22I think that
00:59:23Williams was
00:59:24confused.
00:59:25He thought that
00:59:26leaning on Tony
00:59:27would be in
00:59:27telling him out.
00:59:28He didn't understand
00:59:29he's not a light
00:59:29heavyweight.
00:59:30He is right there
00:59:32the same weight.
00:59:33But he didn't have
00:59:34any other choice
00:59:34I feel, George,
00:59:35because Tony's
00:59:37skills are just
00:59:38too good for him
00:59:39from a distance.
00:59:40I see it that way
00:59:41right now.
00:59:42I think that's
00:59:43entirely right.
00:59:43If he had fought
00:59:44this way from the
00:59:45beginning, he would
00:59:46have gotten taken
00:59:46to the cleaners.
00:59:47Now Williams acting
00:59:48a little bit.
00:59:49But that's okay.
00:59:50James, Tony doesn't
00:59:51need the satisfaction
00:59:52of a knockout
00:59:53at this point.
00:59:54He's perfectly willing
00:59:55to surge forward,
00:59:56get a decision,
00:59:57and move toward
00:59:57that November 19th
00:59:59payday with Roy Jones, Jr.
01:00:03I think Tony has proven
01:00:05that he can box
01:00:06his way out of anything.
01:00:08This was a heck
01:00:09of a test
01:00:09because he faced
01:00:11a strategic challenge
01:00:13unlike anything else
01:00:14he's faced recently.
01:00:15Yeah, he did a lot
01:00:16of it on his own.
01:00:18That's what amazes
01:00:19everybody.
01:00:19Tony is a great
01:00:20fighter.
01:00:21Now,
01:00:21he adjusted in the
01:00:25ring, didn't he?
01:00:26And his legs are
01:00:26strong at this point.
01:00:28Let him out, let him
01:00:29out.
01:00:29Don't be on the
01:00:29head.
01:00:30Don't hold the head
01:00:30down.
01:00:30Let's go.
01:00:32Chris Williams got
01:00:33nothing to be ashamed
01:00:34of.
01:00:34This guy is a smart
01:00:35fighter.
01:00:37Oh, what a right
01:00:38hand.
01:00:38Three, four, five,
01:00:43six, seven, eight, nine,
01:00:48ten.
01:00:50We're watching a great
01:00:51fighter, guys.
01:00:54I mean, this guy took
01:00:55the other guy's best,
01:00:56his strength, his
01:00:57experience, a bigger
01:00:58man.
01:00:59He stuck in there with
01:01:01him.
01:01:02And then when the time
01:01:03came, he finished him.
01:01:05It's just, it's not a
01:01:06great crowd-pleasing
01:01:07fight.
01:01:08But boy, it was a
01:01:09crowd-pleasing finish.
01:01:10It was everything I would
01:01:11like to see in a boxing
01:01:12match.
01:01:14James Toney, in his
01:01:15career, has several
01:01:16knockouts past the
01:01:18ninth round.
01:01:19I don't remember for
01:01:20sure.
01:01:20I think the number is
01:01:21four or five.
01:01:22He knocked out
01:01:23Michael Dunn to win
01:01:23the title in the
01:01:24eleventh round.
01:01:25Here he knocks out
01:01:26Prince Charles
01:01:27Williams in the
01:01:28twelfth round.
01:01:29You don't see a lot of
01:01:30fighters who can do
01:01:31it, guys.
01:01:32This guy sets you up
01:01:33over a long period of
01:01:34time, maintains his
01:01:36stamina and control,
01:01:37and then finishes when
01:01:38the opportunity is
01:01:39there.
01:01:40This is a throwback
01:01:41to old fighters who
01:01:42would do all kinds of
01:01:43tricks and then finish
01:01:44you off because of your
01:01:45mistakes.
01:01:46Let's take another look
01:01:48at the knockout, George,
01:01:49and how James was able
01:01:50to set up and land this
01:01:51right hand.
01:01:52The main thing he has
01:01:53Williams following him
01:01:54around.
01:01:55The guy follow you
01:01:55around, he's open for
01:01:57a right hand.
01:01:58You never follow a
01:01:59puncher.
01:02:00It was a tremendous
01:02:01shot.
01:02:02Prince Charles
01:02:03Williams appeared eager
01:02:04to get up toward the end
01:02:05of that count.
01:02:06Referee Joe Cortez
01:02:08appeared quite satisfied
01:02:10to count him out.
01:02:13And keep in mind that
01:02:14one week ago, Robert
01:02:16Wangila of Kenya died
01:02:18after a fight here in
01:02:19Las Vegas.
01:02:20You can expect the
01:02:21Nevada State Athletic
01:02:22Commission to remain
01:02:23quite wary for a while
01:02:26about fighters who are
01:02:27hurt in the late rounds.
01:02:28Now let's go to Michael
01:02:30Buffer for the official
01:02:31decision.
01:02:31Ladies and gentlemen,
01:02:35referee Joe Cortez reaches
01:02:37the count of ten.
01:02:38The official time, two
01:02:40minutes, 45 seconds of
01:02:43round number 12.
01:02:45The winner and still
01:02:47RBF super middleweight
01:02:49champion of the world,
01:02:52James Lights Out,
01:02:55Tony.
01:02:57Tony.
01:03:01And with the knockout
01:03:04victory, Tony sets up
01:03:05his November 19 showdown
01:03:08with former Olympic star
01:03:10Roy Jones Jr.,
01:03:12middleweight champion
01:03:13of the IBF.
01:03:15It'll be Jones who will
01:03:16have to come up eight
01:03:17pounds in weight to
01:03:19fight James Toney.
01:03:20Many believe that it's
01:03:21the right move for Roy
01:03:22Jones, who appears to
01:03:23have been having trouble
01:03:24making the 160-pound
01:03:26middleweight limit.
01:03:27Final punch stat numbers,
01:03:29James Toney landed 80
01:03:30more blows,
01:03:31through more than
01:03:32200, or no,
01:03:34more than 120 more
01:03:35blows than was the case
01:03:37for Prince Charles
01:03:39Williams.
01:03:40More than 200 more
01:03:41blows.
01:03:42I'll get my math right
01:03:43here in a minute.
01:03:43Percentage is pretty
01:03:44close.
01:03:45Williams landing at a
01:03:45high percentage because
01:03:46they fought so much
01:03:47inside.
01:03:48The end of the story,
01:03:49the great right hand
01:03:50with 15 or 25 seconds
01:03:52to go in the fight by
01:03:53Tony that scored the
01:03:53knockout.
01:03:54Now let's go up to
01:03:55Larry Merchant in the
01:03:56ring with the winner
01:03:57and still champ,
01:03:58James Toney.
01:03:59James.
01:03:59Yes, sir.
01:04:00That was great stuff.
01:04:02Describe the fight up
01:04:03until the end, that
01:04:05grueling inside fight.
01:04:06Well, you know, I kind
01:04:08of expected an inside
01:04:09fight, you know, because
01:04:10from his performance, you
01:04:11don't know how to do
01:04:12nothing but come straight
01:04:12ahead like I ran
01:04:13Barker.
01:04:13So we was prepared.
01:04:15I was prepared to go 12
01:04:16rounds if I have to.
01:04:17And I knew how my
01:04:18strength would get
01:04:18overwhelming sooner or
01:04:20later, you know.
01:04:21Me and Pops worked on
01:04:22the game plans to use
01:04:23short inside shots on
01:04:24the inside.
01:04:25Were you expecting him
01:04:26to try to out-busy you
01:04:28and put his weight on
01:04:29you?
01:04:29That's Prince Charles.
01:04:30You know, that's the only
01:04:31way he knows how to fight.
01:04:32He's a stupid fighter.
01:04:34You know, like I said,
01:04:35I can adapt to any
01:04:36style, no matter what.
01:04:38All right, we're going
01:04:38to take a look at the
01:04:39knockout.
01:04:40Did you sense at the end
01:04:41that he was weakening and
01:04:42ready?
01:04:42Definitely.
01:04:43He was weakening by the
01:04:44ninth round.
01:04:45You know, I was able to
01:04:46pick my shots.
01:04:46You know, bam, right
01:04:47hand.
01:04:47Ooh, God.
01:04:48Right hand, right on the
01:04:49tip of him.
01:04:49He was gone.
01:04:50The London Bridge came
01:04:52falling down on that
01:04:53shot right there.
01:04:54He crumbled.
01:04:55Not been working on
01:04:55no shot in the gym.
01:04:56Bam, look at that.
01:04:56Oh, Jesus.
01:04:58Freight train.
01:04:59Freight train right
01:05:00hand.
01:05:02And as you know,
01:05:03and as you know,
01:05:03I threw that right
01:05:04hand backing up.
01:05:05Not too many fighters
01:05:05can do that today.
01:05:06How tough is that
01:05:08kind of a fight?
01:05:09You fought every kind
01:05:10of a fight.
01:05:10You had to pull out
01:05:11the fight against
01:05:12Tim Littles when
01:05:13your eye was cut.
01:05:14Did you sense that
01:05:15the crowd was unhappy
01:05:16because even though it
01:05:17was a tough fight,
01:05:18it's hard for them to
01:05:19see what's going on
01:05:20and you want to give
01:05:21them something to
01:05:22remember you by?
01:05:23Yeah, you know,
01:05:24the fight was, you know,
01:05:24the fans was kind of
01:05:25on the apprehensive side
01:05:27because he was holding
01:05:28and stuff like that.
01:05:28I was trying my best
01:05:29to fight.
01:05:31Excuse me.
01:05:31You know, I came here
01:05:32to fight.
01:05:33You know, I'm not the
01:05:34kind of person who likes
01:05:35to hold in fights.
01:05:36That's not me.
01:05:37Holdings for sissies.
01:05:38A few words about
01:05:39your upcoming Titanic
01:05:41showdown with Roy Jones.
01:05:43Well, it's on.
01:05:43It's on, baby.
01:05:44187.
01:05:45Roy Jones and James
01:05:46told him November 19th,
01:05:47the fight that everybody
01:05:47want to see is going
01:05:48to happen.
01:05:49Excuse me,
01:05:50November 19th,
01:05:51you know, you said
01:05:52I better James
01:05:52Tony that night.
01:05:53I guarantee it.
01:05:54You'll see it.
01:05:54We'll see it better,
01:05:55James Tony.
01:05:56How was that?
01:05:56A lot better James
01:05:57Tony.
01:05:57James Tony was sick
01:05:59tonight.
01:05:59You know, I got the flu.
01:06:01But nobody knew that.
01:06:03Not even Jackie know.
01:06:04How bad was the flu?
01:06:05And what were its...
01:06:07I was throwing up all
01:06:08week, you know.
01:06:09Jackie knows about the
01:06:09throwing up and everything.
01:06:10But you know me,
01:06:10I'm no great champion.
01:06:11I don't like to pull out.
01:06:13You know, I don't want to
01:06:13make Bob Aaron mad.
01:06:14And then we both have to
01:06:15go to blows.
01:06:15Me and him have to go to
01:06:16blows if I pull out of a fight.
01:06:17We don't want that.
01:06:19It wasn't a long...
01:06:19I wasn't here at the show
01:06:20anywhere.
01:06:20Wasn't a long, grueling fight
01:06:22dangerous for you if...
01:06:23Man, ain't no fight
01:06:24grueling for James Tony.
01:06:25It's dangerous for me
01:06:25because, you know,
01:06:26like I said,
01:06:26I'm not afraid of nobody.
01:06:27I take on all challenges
01:06:28anytime, anywhere.
01:06:29I'm the best fighter in the
01:06:30world and I'm ready to
01:06:30prove against anybody.
01:06:31Anybody.
01:06:32Not too many fighters out
01:06:33there will say that
01:06:34or do that.
01:06:35You know, I'm not one
01:06:36to say Bob Aaron,
01:06:37give me somebody easy.
01:06:38I want the best fighter
01:06:38out there.
01:06:39If somebody think they
01:06:40better than me,
01:06:40come on, step up and
01:06:41prove it.
01:06:42James...
01:06:43That's what it's all about.
01:06:43James, when you...
01:06:44How about me, baby?
01:06:45How you feel?
01:06:46When you prove it in the
01:06:47ring, it ain't bragging.
01:06:50All right, James,
01:06:54congratulations to you
01:06:56on that performance.
01:06:57Let's turn around and
01:06:57say hi to the man.
01:06:58He says he's been
01:06:59bothered by the flu all
01:07:00week.
01:07:00You find that hard to
01:07:01believe?
01:07:01Oh, I don't believe that.
01:07:02If he has the flu,
01:07:03everybody should catch
01:07:04some.
01:07:05Yeah, I'd like to get
01:07:06some myself.
01:07:07Had trouble with the flu,
01:07:08then says he has
01:07:09trouble making weight.
01:07:10Well, we know that.
01:07:10He was two pounds over
01:07:11yesterday and then has
01:07:12to fight a first six or
01:07:13seven rounds like that
01:07:14and comes on to score
01:07:15the knockout.
01:07:16Pretty impressive stuff.
01:07:17I'm awful impressed.
01:07:18I never thought he
01:07:19would have that kind of
01:07:19energy being leaned on
01:07:21for so many rounds.
01:07:22He came out, not only
01:07:23he was able to set it up
01:07:24by making a guy follow
01:07:25him, but I never thought
01:07:26he'd have that kind of
01:07:27power in the last round.
01:07:28No way.
01:07:29All right, George,
01:07:29you've seen Roy Jones,
01:07:31Jr.
01:07:31Great punching power,
01:07:33a lot of athletic talent.
01:07:34James is maybe the more
01:07:35polished boxer.
01:07:36Who's your early favorite
01:07:37for that fight?
01:07:38I don't think there's a
01:07:39boxer active today.
01:07:41That is as good as
01:07:42James Toney.
01:07:43He's the best fighter
01:07:44I've seen, and I don't
01:07:45say that much.
01:07:45So you just moved him
01:07:46past Purnell Whitaker
01:07:47to number one on the list.
01:07:48Because he has that
01:07:49magic thing called
01:07:49punching power.
01:07:50Yep.
01:07:51And you just got to put
01:07:52that, and generally
01:07:52when a guy can punch hard,
01:07:54he doesn't have the
01:07:54ability to box like that.
01:07:55This guy is truly
01:07:57amazing today.
01:07:58I think if anything,
01:07:59his punching power
01:08:00seems to be increasing
01:08:01too.
01:08:01I cannot believe it.
01:08:02Yep.
01:08:03All right.
01:08:03Great job, George.
01:08:04Purnell Whitaker's great now.
01:08:06Yeah, I know.
01:08:06We know.
01:08:06We'll talk to Purnell again.
01:08:08Larry, your final thoughts
01:08:09on a terrific evening.
01:08:11Well, if it's hot outside,
01:08:13and it's hot outside,
01:08:15we had some hot action
01:08:16in here tonight as well.
01:08:18First, a word about
01:08:19young Oscar De La Hoya.
01:08:22I think the pendulum
01:08:23quickly swung back
01:08:25tonight to those people
01:08:27who feel that he is
01:08:29a coming star.
01:08:31When I see him in person
01:08:34up this close,
01:08:35I get the feeling
01:08:36that I'm watching
01:08:37Michelangelo's David
01:08:39stripped down.
01:08:40And although he hasn't
01:08:43beaten any Giants yet,
01:08:45he hasn't slain the big guys,
01:08:47he slew a very tough
01:08:50little guy tonight.
01:08:51And I think that
01:08:53we'll see his career
01:08:55catapult ahead
01:08:56in the next six months
01:08:58to nine months.
01:08:59About James Toney,
01:09:01we've thrown him
01:09:01about every Iconium
01:09:02we could tonight.
01:09:04He has become
01:09:05just a terrific
01:09:07professional fighter
01:09:08who can fight anybody
01:09:10with any style,
01:09:12stay in there,
01:09:14impose his will,
01:09:15his strength,
01:09:16his skill,
01:09:17his great ambition
01:09:19to be a great fighter
01:09:20on any opponent
01:09:22he's in there
01:09:23right now.
01:09:24But I think a good
01:09:25argument can be made
01:09:26that he will be facing
01:09:28his most difficult
01:09:30opposition
01:09:31when he fights
01:09:31Roy Jones
01:09:32who has amazing skills,
01:09:35amazing reflexes,
01:09:37and power.
01:09:38So, good night,
01:09:39and we're looking ahead
01:09:40to good nights,
01:09:41more of them.
01:09:42November 19,
01:09:43a lot of boxing fans
01:09:44marking that date
01:09:45down tonight
01:09:46as we look ahead
01:09:47to James Toney
01:09:47and Roy Jones.
01:09:48All right,
01:09:49we'll be back
01:09:50in just a moment
01:09:51to wrap up
01:09:51the evening in boxing
01:09:52right now.
01:09:53Let's take a look ahead
01:09:54to a huge entertainment
01:09:56event upcoming
01:09:56on HBO.
01:09:59All right, James,
01:10:01congratulations to you
01:10:03on that performance.
01:10:04Let's turn around
01:10:04and say hi to the man.
01:10:05He says he's been bothered
01:10:06by the flu all week.
01:10:07Do you find that hard
01:10:08to believe?
01:10:08Oh, I don't believe that.
01:10:09If he has the flu,
01:10:10everybody should catch some.
01:10:12Yeah, I'd like to
01:10:13catch some myself.
01:10:14Had trouble with the flu?
01:10:15Ben says he has
01:10:16trouble making weight.
01:10:17Well, we know that.
01:10:17He was two pounds
01:10:18over yesterday
01:10:19and then has to fight
01:10:20a first six or seven rounds
01:10:21like that and comes on
01:10:22to score the knockout.
01:10:23Pretty impressive stuff.
01:10:24I'm awful impressed.
01:10:25I never thought he would
01:10:26have that kind of energy
01:10:27being leaned on
01:10:28for so many rounds.
01:10:29He came out,
01:10:30not only he was able
01:10:31to set it up
01:10:31by making a guy
01:10:32follow him,
01:10:32but I never thought
01:10:33he'd have that kind of power
01:10:34in the last round.
01:10:35No way.
01:10:36All right, George,
01:10:36you've seen Roy Jones Jr.
01:10:38Great punching power,
01:10:40a lot of athletic talent.
01:10:41James is maybe
01:10:42the more polished boxer.
01:10:43Who's your early favorite
01:10:44for that fight?
01:10:45I don't think
01:10:46there's a boxer active today
01:10:47that is as good
01:10:49as James Toney.
01:10:50He's the best fighter
01:10:51I've seen
01:10:51and I don't say that much.
01:10:52So you just moved him
01:10:53past Pernell Whitaker
01:10:54to number one on the list.
01:10:55Because he has that magic thing
01:10:56called punching power.
01:10:57Yep.
01:10:58And you just got to put that
01:10:59and generally when a guy
01:11:00can punch hard,
01:11:01he doesn't have the ability

01:11:03This guy is truly amazing today.
01:11:05I think if anything,
01:11:06his punching power
01:11:07seems to be increasing too.
01:11:08I cannot believe it.
01:11:10Yep.
01:11:10All right.
01:11:10Great job, George.
01:11:11Pernell Whitaker is great now.
01:11:13Yeah, I know.
01:11:13We know.
01:11:13We'll talk to Pernell again.
01:11:15Larry, your final thoughts
01:11:16on a terrific evening.

01:11:38When I see him in person
01:11:41up this close,
01:11:42I get the feeling
01:11:43that I'm watching
01:11:44Michelangelo's David
01:11:46stripped down.
01:11:48And although he hasn't
01:11:50beaten any giants yet,
01:11:52he hasn't slain the big guys.
01:11:54He's slow.
01:11:55He slew a very tough
01:11:57little guy tonight.
01:11:59I think that we'll see
01:12:01his career catapult ahead
01:12:03in the next six months

01:12:06About James Toney,

01:12:49November 19,

01:12:51marking that date
01:12:52down tonight
01:12:53as we look ahead

01:12:55All right,
01:12:56we'll be back

01:13:49fighting what many believed
01:13:50was his toughest opponent yet

01:13:5339 seconds of round two.

01:13:57for Paez

01:14:06in the second round
