00:00:00The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports.
00:00:18Their epic battle last December
00:00:21was one of the most grueling fights of 1991.
00:00:31Mike McCallum, regarded as one of the best fighters in the world,
00:00:34entered the ring with only one loss in 43 bouts.
00:00:38McCallum, a virtual Hulk hero, the boxing fans,
00:00:42though overshadowed in the eyes of the general public by Leonard and Hearns.
00:00:48Even middleweight champion James Coney
00:00:50knew that this title defense would be anything but ordinary.
00:00:55And though Coney's unbeaten,
00:00:57some would say he hasn't beaten anybody except Michael Nunn.
00:01:01He can reverse his impression in the eyes of skeptics
00:01:03with a win over the great Mike McCallum.
00:01:07In explain his skill and will,
00:01:10these two gladiators refuse to accept the possibility of defeat.
00:01:16Hand-to-hand combat.
00:01:18McCallum following the jab with the right hand.
00:01:21Coney looking for an opening and lands the right hand over the top.
00:01:24Powerful punches.
00:01:27Tony with a solid right.
00:01:30And jolting jabs.
00:01:32McCallum sticking, working behind the jab.
00:01:37Boxing at its best.
00:01:38After 11 rounds,
00:01:43McCallum led on two of three scorecards.
00:01:46This old man won't go down.
00:01:49The 12th round would be one to behold.
00:01:53Both fighters with something left in what has so far been a great fight.
00:01:58James Coney trying to pull it out of the fire.
00:02:00Lands the right hand over the top.
00:02:02McCallum wobbles to the ropes.
00:02:04Closing seconds now.
00:02:09Tony trying to make one last impression on the judges.
00:02:13A left hand.
00:02:13And another left.
00:02:16After 36 minutes of relentless action,
00:02:19McCallum landed 343 of 890 punches.
00:02:22And Tony 340 of 823 punches.
00:02:25The final decision was even closer.
00:02:28It's a three-way split.
00:02:30Ladies and gentlemen,
00:02:31the bout is a draw.
00:02:33Let's hear it for both of these great fighters here tonight.
00:02:38A rematch would be in order.
00:02:41And so tonight,
00:02:42they meet again.
00:02:43IBF middleweight champion,
00:02:45James Coney,
00:02:46and number one contender,
00:02:47Mike McCallum.
00:02:48The rematch,
00:02:49live from Reno,
00:02:50Nevada.
00:02:51We are live.
00:03:21From the Reno Sparks Convention Center in Reno,
00:03:23Nevada.
00:03:24Where tonight,
00:03:25HBO Sports presents the much-awaited rematch battle.
00:03:29For the International Boxing Federation's version of the middleweight championship,
00:03:32between undefeated champion,
00:03:34James Coney,
00:03:35and veteran number one contender,
00:03:37Mike McCallum.
00:03:38A knowledgeable crowd,
00:03:39filling the arena on a big night in Reno boxing.
00:03:42There has already been a brief,
00:03:44abortive,
00:03:45lightweight championship fight here.
00:03:47More on that later.
00:03:48Now the knowledgeable crowd gets ready for a battle between Tony,
00:03:51a rising superstar in the sport,
00:03:54and Mike McCallum,
00:03:55one of the sport's noblest,
00:03:56and perhaps least properly appreciated,
00:03:59warriors.
00:03:59Hello again,
00:04:02I'm Jim Lafley.
00:04:02Welcome back to HBO World Championship Boxing.
00:04:06You have seen a brief sampling of the battle between these two fighters eight months ago,
00:04:10a tremendously close fight,
00:04:12but we polled some ringside observers,
00:04:14experts,
00:04:15writers,
00:04:15others from within the sport,
00:04:17to ask them who they fought was the actual winner of the battle in Atlantic City last December.
00:04:22And here are the surprising results.
00:04:25As 78% of the respondents in our poll believe that James Coney deserved to have won the decision there.
00:04:31Only 5%,
00:04:32one in every 20,
00:04:33believing that Mike McCallum would have deserved a victory.
00:04:3617% agreeing with the draw,
00:04:39which was the ultimate decision reached by the judges there that night.
00:04:43Larry Merchant,
00:04:44it was called by various experts,
00:04:45the fight of the year in 1991.
00:04:48Can they stage,
00:04:48eight months later,
00:04:50another fight of the year caliber fight?
00:04:51Well,
00:04:52one of the things I'm not an expert on,
00:04:54Jim,
00:04:55is the sequel to fights of the year that ended up in the draw.
00:04:58But what we can say is that champions are risk takers,
00:05:02and when champions are hit,
00:05:04their instinct is to hit back.
00:05:06Tony and McCallum are champions,
00:05:08and that's the formula for something special.
00:05:12The conventional wisdom is that the younger,
00:05:14stronger kid should beat the older,
00:05:17wiser man.
00:05:18But that doesn't mean it has to end that way.
00:05:20What we can say with certainty is that these are the best two middleweights in the world.
00:05:25McCallum having once knocked out Julian Jackson.
00:05:29So,
00:05:29as referee Mills Lane likes to say it,
00:05:31let's get it on.
00:05:32And conditions for tonight's bout,
00:05:34very similar to the case eight months ago.
00:05:36You heard the trainer for James Toney,
00:05:38Bill Miller,
00:05:38telling him,
00:05:39this old man wants your championship belt.
00:05:42Well,
00:05:42George Foreman,
00:05:43that old man still wants his championship belt.
00:05:45How is it for the 35-year-old,
00:05:48much more experienced McCallum,
00:05:49to come back and fight eight months later
00:05:51against a guy who gave him such a tough battle eight months ago?
00:05:53Well,
00:05:54listen,
00:05:54in seven years,
00:05:55we're going to have something big to happen on the calendar,
00:05:57a new century.
00:05:58We're looking for a good politician.
00:06:00We're looking for a great scientist.
00:06:02McCallum,
00:06:02he can be that great athlete to lead us in,
00:06:04the standard bearer for the future.
00:06:06If he makes enthusiasm with it,
00:06:07he can do it.
00:06:08Well,
00:06:08he's certainly one of the reigning scientists of the sport of boxing,
00:06:11and he'll need all of his technical skills tonight.
00:06:13Against an angry young man,
00:06:15James Toney,
00:06:16a young man who ever since his arrival on the spotlight scene in boxing,
00:06:21has seen the world as pretty much a confrontation between himself,
00:06:24and his beloved mother,
00:06:26and everybody else.
00:06:28You want to be a world champion,
00:06:35you pay attention to detail.
00:06:36The detail is,
00:06:38you know,
00:06:38you can give a lot of punches,
00:06:39but what can you take in return?
00:06:41That's what separates the champs from the fighters.
00:06:43You've got to ask yourself two questions.
00:06:45One is how bad do you want it,
00:06:47and what are you willing to sacrifice?
00:06:49You think it was hard getting there?
00:06:50It's going to be twice as hard as staying there.
00:06:52The words of a world champion mother,
00:06:55Sherry Toney,
00:06:56etched in the mind of James Toney,
00:06:57who looks to his mom for direction and support inside and outside the ring.
00:07:03He looks to me as his trainer.
00:07:04I trained him from day one to respect,
00:07:07to grow,
00:07:08to love,
00:07:08and to learn.
00:07:09A single parent,
00:07:10it was Sherry Toney's responsibility to fulfill many roles for young James.
00:07:15Through all these years,
00:07:16she raised me by herself.
00:07:18To me,
00:07:18I consider her my mom and my dad,
00:07:19because, you know,
00:07:20she took care of me from thick and thin,
00:07:22you know,
00:07:23went through the hard times with me.
00:07:24It wasn't easy.
00:07:25Growing up in Ann Arbor,
00:07:26Michigan,
00:07:27James often spent time with family and friends,
00:07:30while Sherry held down two jobs and studied for a master's degree.
00:07:35I got a divorce from his father when he was 17 months.
00:07:38Once he asked me about it,
00:07:39when he was 10,
00:07:40I said,
00:07:41you don't need him now.
00:07:42You can make it on your own.
00:07:44It's hard,
00:07:44but you can do it.
00:07:45Times got especially hard when James ran with the wrong crowd and dealt drugs on a nearby campus.
00:07:51My mom was telling me,
00:07:53you got to decide what you want to do with your life.
00:07:54You're going to be a drug dealer,
00:07:55you're going to end up dead or in jail.
00:07:58We set goals with each other.
00:08:00And she said,
00:08:00you know,
00:08:01if you want it real bad,
00:08:03you have to,
00:08:04you know,
00:08:04turn your friends loose,
00:08:06concentrate on that one particular thing,
00:08:08100%,
00:08:09because if you don't,
00:08:10you might as well just forget it,
00:08:11forget about it.
00:08:14And she taught me everything about skill and guts,
00:08:16you know,
00:08:17because she has it.
00:08:19One goal Sherry reached on her own was to start her own bakery business.
00:08:23When Banks wouldn't loan her money,
00:08:25she baked her pies in local pizza kitchens
00:08:27until a few years down the road when she could afford her own kitchen.
00:08:30Sherry now works her own hours,
00:08:32making specialty pies,
00:08:34which she sells wholesale.
00:08:35And James often stops by to help out.
00:08:40It was hard starting at all.
00:08:41Like I've seen times where I've made like $3 starting out,
00:08:44you know,
00:08:45but see,
00:08:45that's business.
00:08:46You don't quit when times get hard.
00:08:48And I know it has to get better because you can survive the hard times in the business.
00:08:52It makes it worthwhile for the good times when you start making money.
00:08:56Traveling a long road together,
00:08:57James and Sherry have somehow reached the top of their mountain.
00:09:01With no father figure in the house,
00:09:03this woman was forced to do long ago
00:09:05what many single parents are now learning to do.
00:09:08Sherry Toney served as a role model whom anyone would want to emulate,
00:09:12teaching James a lot.
00:09:14But mostly,
00:09:14he learned simply to keep in step with a woman who never gave up
00:09:17and never backed down,
00:09:18world champion mother.
00:09:20Basically,
00:09:22she's done everything she can for me right now.
00:09:23I'm a grown man now.
00:09:24She got to go with her life like a go with mine.
00:09:28And she can do what she can to help me if I need it.
00:09:31That's one thing she's there for.
00:09:32She's always there for me at all times.
00:09:34Hey!
00:09:35And I did it for her all the time.
00:09:37She did a lot of things for me.
00:09:38I love her for it.
00:09:39I made the sacrifice and he made the sacrifice.
00:09:41So I guess we came up like to the hard way.
00:09:43You know,
00:09:43he made it the hard way
00:09:44and I made it the hard way
00:09:45because there's no easy way to get to the top.
00:09:48For Sherry and James,
00:09:50Tony,
00:09:50no regrets.
00:09:52With hard work,
00:09:53determination,
00:09:53and support for one another,
00:09:55they have achieved their goals.
00:09:57For James,
00:09:58this relationship brings out the best in the fighter
00:10:00and has helped to make him
00:10:01middleweight champion of the world.
00:10:03For Sherry,
00:10:04she can sit back and remember
00:10:05that she was his first trainer, too.
00:10:08And will always be
00:10:09the number one lady in his corner.
00:10:12And we bring it back live
00:10:14to ringside in the Reno Sparks Convention Center
00:10:16in Reno, Nevada.
00:10:17HBO Sports presenting
00:10:19the IVF middleweight championship bout
00:10:21between champion James Toney
00:10:23and former WBA middleweight champion
00:10:26Mike McCallum.
00:10:27McCallum,
00:10:28seen by experts
00:10:29as a throwback
00:10:30to the old school in boxing.
00:10:32And for more on him
00:10:33and his prospects,
00:10:34we turn to our own
00:10:35in-house customized
00:10:36throwback to the old school,
00:10:38Larry Merchant.
00:10:42A couple of months ago,
00:10:43I saw Mike McCallum
00:10:45in the lobby of a hotel
00:10:46in Las Vegas.
00:10:47And I thought to myself,
00:10:48he's getting old.
00:10:50Really old.
00:10:51He'll never be able
00:10:52to put together
00:10:53another effort
00:10:54like the one he did
00:10:55against James Toney
00:10:56eight months ago.
00:10:58And then I saw him
00:10:59a couple of days ago,
00:11:00fed and trimmed.
00:11:02And I found myself
00:11:03musing about
00:11:04a legendary old jazz trombonist,
00:11:06Slim Jim Robinson,
00:11:08and his cohorts
00:11:09at Preservation Hall
00:11:10in New Orleans.
00:11:12After a set,
00:11:13it would seem
00:11:14that rigor mortis set in.
00:11:15They would look like
00:11:16they were just nodding off.
00:11:18But then it would come time
00:11:19to blow again.
00:11:20And the blood started to flow
00:11:22and the air started to pump
00:11:24and the music came
00:11:26and the joint jumped.
00:11:29So,
00:11:29Mike McCallum,
00:11:31who fought in the 1976 Olympics,
00:11:34who was avoided
00:11:35by every great middleweight
00:11:36in the 80s,
00:11:37is still going strong
00:11:39in the 90s.
00:11:40Ready to blow
00:11:41again.
00:11:42It takes you back
00:11:54to the old days
00:11:55of newsreels
00:11:55watching 35-year-old
00:11:57Mike McCallum.
00:11:58He's a throwback
00:11:58to a bygone era
00:11:59of ring technicians,
00:12:01a gracefully aging
00:12:02artist of boxing.
00:12:04Years ago,
00:12:06fighters like Sugar Ray Robinson
00:12:07fought actively
00:12:08at the championship level
00:12:09well into their 40s.
00:12:11They used their
00:12:12accumulated technical knowledge
00:12:13and ring smarts
00:12:14after their reflexes
00:12:16had slowed.
00:12:17I portray myself
00:12:18of Sugar Ray Robinson.
00:12:20The way Joe punches
00:12:21effortlessly
00:12:23is distribution of punches.
00:12:26There's variety of punches
00:12:27going backwards
00:12:29and forward.
00:12:30And I always
00:12:31watch his tapes,
00:12:33especially when I'm
00:12:34training for a fight,
00:12:35and try to
00:12:37do things that he does.
00:12:39It is a landmark
00:12:41accomplishment
00:12:41for Mike McCallum
00:12:42to have lasted
00:12:4312 continuous years
00:12:44in boxing.
00:12:45He has outlasted
00:12:46many other champions
00:12:47who were title holders
00:12:48when McCallum
00:12:49first won the junior
00:12:50middleweight belt
00:12:51in 1984.
00:12:53And how has McCallum
00:12:54survived over a decade
00:12:55as a professional fighter?
00:12:57For one thing,
00:12:58his boxing style
00:12:59in the ring
00:12:59rediscovers
00:13:00some of the lost
00:13:01arts of his predecessors.
00:13:02He takes care of all
00:13:05the little things
00:13:06that some fighters
00:13:08neglect
00:13:08that would lengthen
00:13:10his career.
00:13:13A fighter can't go
00:13:14through our career
00:13:15without getting hit
00:13:16a lot of times.
00:13:18But some fighters
00:13:20get hit solidly.
00:13:22Mike has the ability
00:13:24to slip and ride
00:13:25and roll with punches.
00:13:2681-year-old
00:13:28boxing PhD
00:13:29Eddie Futch
00:13:30knows well
00:13:31what it takes
00:13:32to prolong a career.
00:13:33He teaches McCallum
00:13:34here in the red shirt
00:13:35subtle defensive details
00:13:37like arms and shoulders
00:13:38to block debilitating
00:13:39body punches.
00:13:40He's making the other
00:13:41guy do most of the moving
00:13:42and he does just
00:13:44what is necessary
00:13:44to get to his point.
00:13:46If he makes a punch
00:13:47miss without the use
00:13:48of his hands
00:13:49or having to step
00:13:51away from his point,
00:13:52it means he's always
00:13:53in perfect position.
00:13:55McCallum has found
00:13:56that a good offense
00:13:56with punches
00:13:57from all angles
00:13:58can provide
00:13:59a solid defense.
00:14:00Since his only defeat
00:14:01to Sumbu Kalambi,
00:14:03Mike has become
00:14:03more aggressive
00:14:04throwing more punches
00:14:05per round
00:14:06with greater efficiency.
00:14:09If Mike McCallum
00:14:11can devise methods
00:14:12to endure in the ring,
00:14:13then surely
00:14:14he must take
00:14:15the extra steps
00:14:16he needs to last
00:14:17outside the ring.
00:14:19The daily 5.30 a.m.
00:14:21McCallum run
00:14:22is bone-wearying
00:14:23work for a 35-year-old.
00:14:25But the meticulous
00:14:26program Mike
00:14:27clings to
00:14:27has a purpose.
00:14:29I know this
00:14:30is what I have to do.
00:14:32I don't think about it.
00:14:33I just do it.
00:14:34You stop to think
00:14:35about it,
00:14:36then you mind me
00:14:37until you're tired.
00:14:40No, Mike,
00:14:40not today, tomorrow.
00:14:42Mike, you have more time.
00:14:43You have a lot of time,
00:14:44you know.
00:14:45So I try not to think
00:14:45about it.
00:14:46I know that I have
00:14:47to get up and run.
00:14:48McCallum doesn't put off
00:14:49mental conditioning either.
00:14:51He has learned
00:14:52to isolate himself
00:14:53from distractions,
00:14:54surrounded only by
00:14:55trainers and sparring partners.
00:14:57At a remote compound
00:14:58in California,
00:14:59the small clan
00:14:59eats, sleeps,
00:15:01breathes,
00:15:01and talks
00:15:02about the upcoming
00:15:03rematch.
00:15:06Despite all the preparation,
00:15:07many fight fans
00:15:08believe McCallum's age
00:15:09will be his downfall
00:15:11tonight.
00:15:11If Mike cheats
00:15:12father time
00:15:13one more time
00:15:14and wins,
00:15:15he'll honor his heroes
00:15:16by becoming
00:15:16the oldest active champion.
00:15:18Sometimes when I look
00:15:20at myself
00:15:21and see
00:15:22the level
00:15:23of the competition
00:15:24and the level
00:15:25in which I can compete
00:15:26at this age
00:15:27and I'm still doing it,
00:15:29I have to say
00:15:30thank God,
00:15:30you know,
00:15:31because not many
00:15:32of us still,
00:15:33who's left
00:15:34still doing it.
00:15:35So, you know,
00:15:35I'm very happy for that.
00:15:36He loves to box.
00:15:37He knows,
00:15:38and he can box.
00:15:39He knows how
00:15:39to do these things.
00:15:41And a lot of the skills
00:15:43that Mike shows now
00:15:45are lost.
00:15:47They are lost to boxing.
00:15:49You won't need a newsreel
00:15:50to find those
00:15:51pugilistic skills
00:15:52as long as Mike McCallum
00:15:54wears Sugar Ray Robinson's mantle
00:15:55as the gracefully aging
00:15:57artist to boxing.
00:16:00A lot of the artistry
00:16:03McCallum feels
00:16:03he did not properly use
00:16:05last December
00:16:06against Tony.
00:16:07Most notably,
00:16:08he didn't go to the body
00:16:09the way he expects to
00:16:10all the time.
00:16:11He didn't throw
00:16:11the left hook,
00:16:12his best punch enough.
00:16:13And maybe a key
00:16:14to his extraordinary
00:16:15longevity in the sport,
00:16:16three long periods
00:16:18of inactivity
00:16:19during his career
00:16:20which have given
00:16:21his body a chance
00:16:22on occasion
00:16:22to rest up.
00:16:23Marked contrast
00:16:24to Tony
00:16:25who has never had
00:16:26an inactive period
00:16:27longer than 104 days
00:16:29in his brief career
00:16:31as a hardworking,
00:16:33frequently defending
00:16:34champion fighter.
00:16:36And the fact
00:16:37that McCallum
00:16:38has really never
00:16:39taken a beating
00:16:40in the ring, Jim.
00:16:41He's had a hard fight
00:16:42against Tony
00:16:43but nobody has ever
00:16:44administered a beating
00:16:45so as far as we can tell
00:16:48he's a young
00:16:4935-year-old warrior.
00:16:51He was a contemporary
00:16:51of Leonard,
00:16:53Kearns,
00:16:54Hagler,
00:16:54Duran.
00:16:55Never got a chance
00:16:56to fight any
00:16:56of the four of them.
00:16:57None of them
00:16:58wanted to fight
00:17:00McCallum
00:17:00because they felt
00:17:01he was too good
00:17:03and you couldn't
00:17:03make enough money
00:17:04to take that risk
00:17:06by fighting him.
00:17:08So business
00:17:08idiosyncrasies
00:17:09in boxing
00:17:10may have prevented
00:17:10Mike McCallum
00:17:11amid 43 wins,
00:17:13only one loss
00:17:14and the draw
00:17:15with Tony
00:17:16from ever becoming
00:17:17a boxing superstar.
00:17:19His most notable victories
00:17:20that knockout of Jackson
00:17:22and also a knockout
00:17:23of Donald Curry.
00:17:25And here comes
00:17:26James Toney,
00:17:27seventh title fight
00:17:28in the past 15 months.
00:17:30As we've already told you,
00:17:32an angry young man
00:17:33who found a recent
00:17:34opportunity to vent
00:17:35some of that anger
00:17:36at a news conference
00:17:37here three days ago.
00:17:39He's going around
00:17:41talking about
00:17:41how he's going
00:17:42to knock me out
00:17:42but you know what?
00:17:43Kick your ass,
00:17:43James Toney.
00:17:44This time for good.
00:17:45We'll see that.
00:17:45We ain't going to wait
00:17:46until Saturday.
00:17:46We can go right now
00:17:47like I said on the phone
00:17:48the other day.
00:17:49Wait until Saturday.
00:17:50We don't fight for free.
00:17:51We'll kick your ass
00:17:52in the ring on Saturday.
00:17:57A belly bump
00:17:58by Bob Arum
00:17:59in the unaccustomed
00:18:00role of peacemaker.
00:18:02Yes, and he's so angry
00:18:03he even got Mike McCallum
00:18:05to be angry
00:18:06which is the last thing
00:18:07you expect.
00:18:08But calling Toney
00:18:09just angry
00:18:09is like saying
00:18:11that Michelle Pfeiffer
00:18:12is a girl
00:18:13or a hurricane
00:18:15is a win.
00:18:17It is indeed
00:18:18an understatement
00:18:18and there goes Toney
00:18:19right now
00:18:20getting right up
00:18:21in McCallum's face
00:18:22to generate some heat
00:18:24before the bout
00:18:24has even begun.
00:18:25You look at the record
00:18:2631 wins.
00:18:28No losses.
00:18:29Draws with Sanderline
00:18:30Williams later avenged
00:18:31in a 10-round decision
00:18:32and of course
00:18:33the second draw
00:18:34was with Mike McCallum.
00:18:35Marvin Hagler
00:18:36said after watching
00:18:37this last fight
00:18:39he said he's young
00:18:40he's strong
00:18:40and he doesn't know
00:18:41how to lose.
00:18:42He knows how to channel
00:18:43that anger.
00:18:45Tale of the tape
00:18:45and you will see
00:18:46that the biggest difference
00:18:47between the two fighters
00:18:48on paper is age.
00:18:49Toney 24 years old
00:18:50he just turned 24
00:18:51within the past week.
00:18:53Mike McCallum
00:18:54will reach age 36
00:18:55in December of this year.
00:18:58The interesting thing
00:18:58about these numbers
00:18:59Jim
00:19:00he's thrown 158 for Tony.
00:19:02He reached weight
00:19:03a week ago.
00:19:04He has the tendency
00:19:05dangerous tendency
00:19:06of training only
00:19:08to the level
00:19:08of his opponent
00:19:09which is why
00:19:10he's had so many
00:19:10close fights.
00:19:11He's in shape tonight.
00:19:13Punch stat numbers
00:19:14Larry from their fight
00:19:15in December of 1991.
00:19:17Well the interesting
00:19:18thing here
00:19:19is that they threw
00:19:20so many punches.
00:19:2169 and 74
00:19:22adds up to four punches
00:19:25thrown every five seconds.
00:19:26And the rules
00:19:28for tonight's bout.
00:19:30First a look at the jabs
00:19:31in the bout
00:19:31last December.
00:19:32Of course McCallum
00:19:33throws more jabs
00:19:34being more of the boxer.
00:19:36Tony landed
00:19:36more heavy blows.
00:19:38Pardon my prematurity.
00:19:39Now the rules
00:19:40with our unofficial
00:19:41ringside scorer
00:19:42Harold Lederman.
00:19:43Harold?
00:19:43James, Tony
00:19:44and Mike McCallum

00:19:49three judges
00:19:50scoring the fight
00:19:50on a 10 point

00:19:52There is no
00:19:52standing eight count
00:19:53no three knockdown rule
00:19:55and only the referee
00:19:55can stop the fight.
00:19:56And you can't be saved
00:19:57by the bell
00:19:58in any round
00:19:58including the last round.
00:19:59And Jim
00:20:00in case of an

00:22:47James
00:22:48lights out
00:22:50Tony
00:22:52he got psyched out
00:23:14he was beating
00:23:14the press conference
00:23:15he was trying to be
00:23:16a nice guy
00:23:16and the other guy
00:23:17slammed down on him
00:23:18made him wake up
00:23:19and I don't think
00:23:20he's went back to sleep
00:23:21yet
00:23:21and he should be
00:23:23this guy let him
00:23:24pull an old
00:23:25psychological trick on him
00:23:26round one
00:23:30McCallum in the red trunks
00:23:32Tony in the gold trunks
00:23:33Tony defending his
00:23:35IBF middleweight championship
00:23:36against a man
00:23:37who gave up
00:23:38a middleweight championship
00:23:39Mike McCallum did
00:23:40rather than to give in
00:23:42to the WBA
00:23:42on its choice
00:23:43of an opponent
00:23:44for a defense
00:23:45they wanted him
00:23:46to fight Steve Collins
00:23:47he wanted to fight
00:23:48Tony instead
00:23:48Tony is starting
00:23:56out real smart
00:23:57he's going low
00:23:58on the veterans
00:23:59you try to hit them
00:24:00in the chest
00:24:00and around the side
00:24:01early on
00:24:02so they don't get
00:24:03any power later on
00:24:04if they do get courage
00:24:05Tony who landed
00:24:06a lot of power shots
00:24:08in the first fight
00:24:08George says
00:24:09that he would like
00:24:10this one to be
00:24:10more of a boxing match
00:24:12and James is working
00:24:18behind the jab
00:24:19early
00:24:19and as you pointed out
00:24:20using the jab
00:24:21to go to the body
00:24:22the chest and the belt
00:24:23you try to suck
00:24:24all the power
00:24:25out of the veterans
00:24:26because they want
00:24:27the fights to go longer
00:24:28Tony easily blocking
00:24:30McCallum's jab early
00:24:31a lead right by Tony
00:24:38lead right hands
00:24:39were effective
00:24:39for him
00:24:40in the first fight
00:24:41McCallum starts to go
00:24:49to the body
00:24:50by his own admission
00:24:51the body snatcher
00:24:52didn't go to the body
00:24:53enough
00:24:54in fight number one
00:24:55against Tony
00:24:55McCallum should be careful
00:24:57him not to make
00:24:58this young boy mad
00:24:59too soon
00:25:00he's throwing the box
00:25:01not letting him keep boxing
00:25:02quick hand from Tony
00:25:05as he finishes inside
00:25:07with the right hand
00:25:08and McCallum lands a dab
00:25:11Tony retaliates in time
00:25:15jab and left hook for McCallum
00:25:26he wants to throw the left hook
00:25:27a lot more tonight
00:25:28than was the case
00:25:29eight months ago
00:25:29Tony missing with the right hand
00:25:31it's a boxing aficionado's delight so far
00:25:47the two fighters standing
00:25:48facing each other
00:25:49in the center of the ring
00:25:50circling and using the jab
00:25:52to try to set up combinations
00:25:53McCallum has allowed
00:25:55Tony to go on
00:25:56and beat a counter puncher
00:25:57counting with three
00:25:58four shots
00:25:58he should have been in that position
00:26:00round one
00:26:17a bit of a chess match
00:26:18in which Tony has appeared
00:26:20not surprisingly
00:26:21a little quicker
00:26:22and a little stronger
00:26:23than Mike McCallum
00:26:24he's got a chance
00:26:26Tony tried to box the boxer
00:26:30in that round
00:26:30we'll find out how smart that is
00:26:33if he continues
00:26:34I thought McCallum won the round
00:26:36all right
00:26:37nice
00:26:38nice
00:26:39yeah you gotta get a little
00:26:44right hand
00:26:44left
00:26:47right
00:26:48you got a chance
00:26:51go with that double hook
00:26:53be first
00:27:03when you come out
00:27:04of them clenches with him
00:27:05don't wait for him
00:27:06you be first
00:27:07okay
00:27:07keep control
00:27:09don't cut off the jab
00:27:10take some of them jabs
00:27:12and hook off on them
00:27:13but be alert
00:27:15be looking for something back
00:27:16but you be first
00:27:17get that strong
00:27:22grab that spoon
00:27:24grab him
00:27:25I got it
00:27:26I got it
00:27:26I got it
00:27:26all right
00:27:27in that round
00:27:28Jim
00:27:28Tony fought
00:27:29in a much more
00:27:30even pace
00:27:31consistent pace
00:27:32rather than in the spurts
00:27:33he did in the first fight
00:27:35but he's spurting right now
00:27:36and he gets inside
00:27:37and lands the left hand
00:27:38to the face
00:27:39which is the most effective
00:27:40blow so far in the bout
00:27:41and you heard Tony's trainer
00:27:46Bill Miller saying
00:27:47be first
00:27:47get in there
00:27:48and start the action
00:27:49he doesn't want
00:27:50his fighter to get into
00:27:52a counter punching duel
00:27:53with McCallum
00:27:53who's a terrific counter puncher
00:27:55Tony is starting to get in
00:27:58on McCallum
00:27:59that's out of his body
00:28:00early
00:28:01and it's starting to hurt too
00:28:02tell us how you can tell that
00:28:05George
00:28:06well he's protective of it
00:28:08he hits him once
00:28:09and the next time
00:28:10he covers up
00:28:10before he hits him
00:28:11to another point
00:28:12McCallum lands the jab
00:28:16left hand behind it
00:28:18is blocked
00:28:18Tony with a solid left
00:28:19there's a left hand
00:28:20by McCallum
00:28:21both fighters landing
00:28:22in close
00:28:23McCallum trying to set up
00:28:32the jab
00:28:33by going to the body first
00:28:34Tony was able to slide
00:28:36his head out of the way
00:28:37but here's the
00:28:43inconsistency of James
00:28:45Tony within a round
00:28:46you saw him begin
00:28:46with a busy spurt
00:28:47stay busy for about
00:28:4820 seconds
00:28:49now he's letting McCallum
00:28:50set the pace
00:28:51both of these guys
00:28:57have to really drain
00:28:58themselves
00:28:58trying to get down
00:28:59to that weight
00:28:59they went a little lower
00:29:01so they better not
00:29:02try to get too
00:29:03exhaust
00:29:04exhaust themselves
00:29:05too quick in this fight
00:29:06well both fought
00:29:07at a measured pace
00:29:08in round one
00:29:09and round two
00:29:10has been hardly
00:29:11any more intense
00:29:12so far
00:29:13much more of a tactical
00:29:15battle
00:29:15than was the case
00:29:16last December
00:29:17and that's because
00:29:21they respect each other
00:29:22right George
00:29:23once you have respect
00:29:24you do have respect
00:29:25McCallum landed the left
00:29:28but was backing up
00:29:29work out
00:29:30work out
00:29:30come on
00:29:31work out
00:29:34work out
00:29:36work out
00:29:36come on
00:29:37work out
00:29:37with that shoulder
00:29:38with that shoulder
00:29:38Mike
00:29:39both fighters trying to
00:29:40go to the body
00:29:41both fighters blocking
00:29:42shots to the body
00:29:43now Tony gets into
00:29:44the ribcage
00:29:44with the left
00:29:45come on
00:29:45get him out
00:29:46left hook inside
00:29:53for McCallum
00:29:53as Tony dropped
00:29:55the right hand
00:29:55if you've just joined
00:30:00us we're in the
00:30:00second round
00:30:01on HBO's
00:30:03world championship
00:30:04boxing
00:30:04it's the IVF
00:30:06middleweight battle
00:30:06between champion
00:30:07James, Tony
00:30:08and the Gold Trunks
00:30:09and challenger
00:30:10Mike McCallum
00:30:11in the red
00:30:11a rematch
00:30:12of their fight
00:30:13in December
00:30:13of 1991
00:30:14which was
00:30:15a spirited draw
00:30:16rated by some
00:30:18observers
00:30:18as the best fight
00:30:19in the sport
00:30:20in the year 1991
00:30:22we've had a tactical
00:30:24battle through two rounds
00:30:25both fighters
00:30:26showing flashes
00:30:27neither fighter
00:30:28taking command
00:30:29earlier this evening
00:30:33a lightweight
00:30:34championship fight
00:30:35here in this arena
00:30:36the bout to
00:30:37fill the vacant
00:30:38IVF welterweight
00:30:39title left vacant
00:30:40by the defection
00:30:41of Brunel Whitaker
00:30:42to the 140 pound
00:30:43class
00:30:43it was Freddie
00:30:44Pendleton
00:30:45the veteran
00:30:45against Tracy
00:30:46Spann
00:30:46and they fought
00:30:48for the IVF
00:30:48lightweight championship
00:30:49in round one
00:30:50the left-hander Spann
00:30:52landed that solid
00:30:53left hand
00:30:54to drop Pendleton
00:30:55on his trunks
00:30:55and take a seeming
00:30:56tactical advantage
00:30:57in the bout
00:30:58but then
00:30:59two minutes into
00:30:59round number two
00:31:00you will see their
00:31:01heads collide
00:31:02right there
00:31:03and that accidental
00:31:04headbutt
00:31:05opened a massive cut
00:31:06over the right eye
00:31:07of Freddie Pendleton
00:31:07because of the depth
00:31:09and the size of the cut
00:31:11the bout was stopped
00:31:12and called a technical
00:31:13draw Pendleton
00:31:14will be matched
00:31:15against Spann
00:31:15again four or five
00:31:17months from now
00:31:18still for the IVF
00:31:19lightweight championship
00:31:20McCallum is giving
00:31:25a clinic right now
00:31:27exactly right
00:31:31you saw the punch count
00:31:32numbers that gave
00:31:33McCallum the edge
00:31:34in the second round
00:31:35we'll see if this
00:31:39continues to be
00:31:40a battle of technique
00:31:41and if it is
00:31:42it plays into
00:31:43McCallum's favor
00:31:43Tony landing
00:31:44a left hand
00:31:45and a right hand
00:31:46and another left
00:31:46in close
00:31:47and Tony once again
00:31:49spurs to begin
00:31:50the third round
00:31:51as he did
00:31:51at the beginning
00:31:52of round two
00:31:53and he should do
00:31:55more because
00:31:56the veteran fighters
00:31:57they spar all the time
00:31:58and he's allowing
00:31:59them to have
00:31:59a sparring match
00:32:00in here
00:32:00Tony should be
00:32:01all over him
00:32:02for the first
00:32:02five or six round
00:32:03to make him
00:32:04want to fight back
00:32:04get some points
00:32:06well yesterday
00:32:07in our meetings
00:32:08with the two fighters
00:32:09Harold Letterman
00:32:10couldn't restrain
00:32:11himself from telling
00:32:12Tony what a nightmare
00:32:13he creates for judges
00:32:14by fighting only
00:32:15part of every round
00:32:16and you're seeing it here
00:32:20he's like a tornado
00:32:22Jim
00:32:22he comes down
00:32:23out of the sky
00:32:24with fury
00:32:24then goes back up
00:32:25in the sky
00:32:26disappears for a while
00:32:27then comes back
00:32:28down again
00:32:28and you'd better
00:32:30be ready
00:32:31non-tarell trainer
00:32:38Eddie Butch
00:32:39had told McCallum
00:32:40that he wanted
00:32:40him to get in
00:32:41and pressure Tony
00:32:42at the end
00:32:43of those spurts
00:32:43and take advantage
00:32:45of the fact that
00:32:46Tony doesn't want
00:32:47to fight the full
00:32:47three minutes
00:32:48of every round
00:32:48but McCallum
00:32:49seems to want
00:32:50to stay away
00:32:51for the time being
00:32:52the biggest mistake
00:32:55McCallum can do
00:32:56right now
00:32:56is start allowing
00:32:58Tony to jab him
00:32:59if he gets his
00:33:00confidence in that
00:33:01jab
00:33:01the fight is over
00:33:02so how can he
00:33:03prevent Tony
00:33:04from jabbing him
00:33:04stay away from him
00:33:05farther away
00:33:06because he has
00:33:07the greater reach
00:33:07state of distance
00:33:08well for the time
00:33:19being McCallum
00:33:20seems to be
00:33:20listening to you
00:33:21George
00:33:21as he does
00:33:22stay out of
00:33:23arms reach
00:33:24from Tony
00:33:24during that
00:33:2515 or 20
00:33:26second stretch
00:33:27you find the
00:33:28correct distance
00:33:29and you use it
00:33:29never get in
00:33:31between that
00:33:31perfect distance
00:33:32where your jab
00:33:33is king
00:33:33Mike is remembering
00:33:34better tonight
00:33:35to go to the body
00:33:36something he forgot
00:33:37about in their
00:33:38December fight
00:33:39now Tony
00:33:41begins another
00:33:42spurt
00:33:42with 45 seconds
00:33:43remaining in the
00:33:44round
00:33:44good right hand
00:33:56by McCallum
00:33:56set up by the
00:33:57triple left jab
00:33:58and there he goes
00:34:01again
00:34:02jab jab jab
00:34:03looking for the
00:34:04right hand
00:34:04one more time
00:34:05Tony backing away
00:34:07think about those
00:34:11jab momentarily
00:34:12they mess up
00:34:13your vision
00:34:14you don't know
00:34:15what to do
00:34:15it's best to
00:34:16step back
00:34:16for a moment
00:34:17the key fighters
00:34:20trading jabs
00:34:20still a tactical
00:34:22battle through
00:34:22round number
00:34:23three
00:34:24time
00:34:28all right
00:34:41all right
00:34:41be alert
00:34:42don't let him
00:34:43steal you
00:34:43don't let him
00:34:44steal you
00:34:44with the old
00:34:45right hand
00:34:45he always comes
00:34:46with him all the
00:34:46time
00:34:46see
00:34:46when you move in
00:34:51like that
00:34:51with your jab
00:34:51I'm going to try
00:34:52to get that
00:34:52double and double
00:34:53look off
00:34:54you said
00:34:56how difficult it is
00:34:57to score a Tony
00:34:58fight
00:34:58Harry were you
00:34:59scoring this one
00:35:00Larry let me tell you
00:35:01something
00:35:01there is nothing
00:35:02decisive about this
00:35:03fight
00:35:03two to one
00:35:04Mike McCallum
00:35:05I gave the first
00:35:05round to James
00:35:06Tony I thought he
00:35:07was a little bit
00:35:07busier
00:35:07he was using that
00:35:08left jab
00:35:09he backed McCallum
00:35:09up a bit
00:35:10but then in rounds
00:35:11two and three
00:35:11Mike McCallum
00:35:12came back
00:35:12and he just
00:35:13took over the fight
00:35:14he seems to be
00:35:15backing up
00:35:15James Tony
00:35:16he's a little bit
00:35:17busier
00:35:17he had a nice
00:35:18counter shots
00:35:19I thought McCallum
00:35:19Greg runs two and
00:35:20three to take a
00:35:2129-28 lead
00:35:22Tony has to decide
00:35:24somewhere along the
00:35:25way here
00:35:26whether he wants
00:35:27to continue to
00:35:28box the boxer
00:35:29or whether he wants
00:35:30to try to impose
00:35:31his youth and strength
00:35:33on the old guy
00:35:34and they've won
00:35:40McCallum in the
00:35:41corner
00:35:41don't let him
00:35:42steal you with
00:35:42that right hand
00:35:43and Tony stole
00:35:44him that time
00:35:45well if the fight
00:35:48were limited to
00:35:49the first 10
00:35:50seconds of every
00:35:51round
00:35:51Tony would be
00:35:52the easy winner
00:35:52so far
00:35:53but the spurts
00:35:54at the beginning
00:35:55of each round
00:35:56have not been
00:35:56followed with
00:35:57consistent action
00:35:58throughout
00:35:58there's a good
00:36:01right hand
00:36:02you're right
00:36:02George
00:36:02temporarily
00:36:04wobbles
00:36:04Mike McCallum
00:36:05but he stands
00:36:06in there anyway
00:36:07McCallum got
00:36:09instructions from
00:36:10this corner
00:36:11don't let him
00:36:12steal you
00:36:12with the right
00:36:13hand
00:36:13those are
00:36:16right hand
00:36:17leads that are
00:36:18scoring for
00:36:18James Tony
00:36:19Cox's left
00:36:21shoulder in the
00:36:21fashion
00:36:21he throws it
00:36:22like a ball
00:36:23player
00:36:23those fast
00:36:24pitchers or
00:36:25something
00:36:25kind of tries
00:36:27to lull you
00:36:27for about a
00:36:28half second
00:36:28with that
00:36:29Cox's shoulder
00:36:29I guess it
00:36:30does
00:36:30that time
00:36:32the right
00:36:32hand missing
00:36:33for Tony
00:36:33and Mike
00:36:34McCallum
00:36:34had the right
00:36:35hand stuck
00:36:35in James's
00:36:36face
00:36:36multiple jabs
00:36:50from McCallum
00:36:51again
00:36:51that's the
00:36:51strategy
00:36:52which has
00:36:52paid off
00:36:53for him
00:36:53in the
00:36:54sections of
00:36:55each round
00:36:55that he
00:36:55has
00:36:56controlled
00:36:56body
00:36:59shot
00:36:59for Tony
00:36:59as
00:37:00McCallum
00:37:00comes in
00:37:01another
00:37:05right
00:37:05hand
00:37:05by
00:37:05James
00:37:06Tony
00:37:06and
00:37:07McCallum
00:37:08comes back
00:37:08for the
00:37:09left
00:37:09Tony is like
00:37:13an old
00:37:13veteran
00:37:13he waits
00:37:14for one
00:37:14for one
00:37:14shot
00:37:15he's waiting
00:37:23George
00:37:23McCallum
00:37:24is hitting
00:37:25but while
00:37:29McCallum
00:37:29has the
00:37:29tactical
00:37:30advantage
00:37:30it is
00:37:31Tony
00:37:31who lands
00:37:32the harder
00:37:33shot
00:37:33that's right
00:37:34and the judges
00:37:34are going to
00:37:34have to pay
00:37:35a lot of
00:37:35attention
00:37:36to that
00:37:36especially
00:37:37when you
00:37:37got a
00:37:37crowd
00:37:38who can
00:37:38see
00:37:38that
00:37:39at some
00:37:51point
00:37:51or other
00:37:51we got to
00:37:52distinguish
00:37:52ourselves
00:37:52from the
00:37:53Olympics
00:37:53you mean
00:37:55they don't
00:37:55have red
00:37:56and blue
00:37:56buttons
00:37:56here
00:37:57those guys
00:38:00would tell
00:38:01us that
00:38:01eight or
00:38:01nine punches
00:38:02had landed
00:38:03so far
00:38:03in the fight
00:38:04our eyes
00:38:05tell us
00:38:05different
00:38:06Tony
00:38:11with the
00:38:11right
00:38:12uppercut
00:38:12McCallum
00:38:13lands
00:38:13a left
00:38:13and a right
00:38:14inside
00:38:14the two
00:38:16fighters
00:38:16trading
00:38:17solid
00:38:17punches
00:38:17as we
00:38:18come down
00:38:18the stretch
00:38:19in round
00:38:19number
00:38:19four
00:38:20Tony
00:38:26said he
00:38:27wouldn't
00:38:27go for
00:38:27a big
00:38:28knockout
00:38:28shot
00:38:28earlier
00:38:29today
00:38:29and that
00:38:30seems to
00:38:30be
00:38:30what
00:38:30he's
00:38:31doing
00:38:31I
00:38:40thought
00:38:40that
00:38:41was
00:38:41Tony's
00:38:41best
00:38:41round
00:38:42we're
00:38:43in the
00:38:43fight
00:38:43all right
00:38:45I want you
00:38:46to go out
00:38:47there
00:38:47stick
00:38:48right hand
00:38:51left hook
00:38:52those are
00:38:52your
00:38:52combinations
00:38:53but be
00:38:54first
00:38:54you gotta
00:38:55get away
00:38:55first
00:38:55don't wait
00:38:58for him
00:38:59you'll be
00:39:00first
00:39:00keep
00:39:01the
00:39:02pressure
00:39:02so
00:39:08very
00:39:09close
00:39:09keep
00:39:10popping
00:39:11that
00:39:11left
00:39:11hand
00:39:11and
00:39:11keep
00:39:12the
00:39:13combination
00:39:13when you're
00:39:14getting back
00:39:14against the
00:39:14rope
00:39:14but don't
00:39:15stand up
00:39:16straight
00:39:16and here
00:39:18is Tony
00:39:18flaring
00:39:19he said
00:39:19his fists
00:39:20would be
00:39:20the judges
00:39:21here comes
00:39:22the judge
00:39:23nicely
00:39:28done
00:39:28George
00:39:29through
00:39:31four rounds
00:39:32it is
00:39:33McCallum
00:39:34who has
00:39:34landed
00:39:35more punches
00:39:36it is
00:39:37Tony
00:39:37who is
00:39:37landing
00:39:38the harder
00:39:38shots
00:39:39tough
00:39:40fight
00:39:40the score
00:39:41Tony's trying to give you confidence
00:39:49he'll let you land
00:39:50three jam
00:39:51your bags
00:39:52follow off
00:39:52as though you've hurt him
00:39:53he comes back with his shocking right hand
00:39:55to knock your head off
00:39:56because he wants to counter with that right hand over the top
00:39:58and McCallum
00:40:00right eye is already a little bloodshot
00:40:03so you can believe something has happened
00:40:04that you can't see in that ring
00:40:06Mike the body snatcher McCallum
00:40:10still not getting
00:40:12as much as he'd like
00:40:14I'm sure
00:40:14to the body of James
00:40:16Tony
00:40:16but scoring with the jab
00:40:19and at times
00:40:19countering effectively off of Tony's action
00:40:22there were two body shots
00:40:36a left and a right by McCallum
00:40:37so far in this bout
00:40:39he's averaging only about five attempts at the body per round
00:40:42he would like to be doing that more
00:40:44and so would his 81 year old trainer
00:40:46Eddie Foote
00:40:46mouthpiece replacement now for McCallum
00:40:50as the mouthpiece fell out
00:40:51Tony comes to the neutral corner
00:40:52could it be that Mike is tiring
00:40:55a little faster than his opponent George
00:40:57could it be
00:40:58there are some things going on
00:41:01on the right side
00:41:01on the right side of McCallum's face
00:41:04yeah you're right
00:41:05that right eye is aware of it
00:41:06right hand lands flush for Tony
00:41:09as referee Joe Cortez
00:41:10steps in with another instruction
00:41:12come on
00:41:17let's go work out of that guy
00:41:18two good body shots from Tony
00:41:24and the left hand
00:41:25that split McCallum's defense
00:41:26right hand over the top
00:41:30by McCallum land
00:41:31and Mike just misses
00:41:33with the solid right cross
00:41:34that would have done some damage
00:41:35uppercuts inside for Tony land
00:41:38both fighters scoring
00:41:40Tony is
00:41:46it's all right
00:41:47he feels good about just hurting him
00:41:49and making him respect him
00:41:50he doesn't seem to want to go for the finish
00:41:52so that's good
00:41:53for a young fighter
00:41:54Tony seems to be
00:41:59measuring
00:42:00his effort
00:42:01and biding his time
00:42:03in the first six rounds
00:42:04George would you endorse that strategy
00:42:05I think so because that's the one thing
00:42:07the young fighters don't have
00:42:08patience
00:42:09they lose a lot of fights
00:42:12because of impatience
00:42:12McCallum remembering to go back
00:42:15to the body after Tony
00:42:16misses just slightly
00:42:18with the left hand
00:42:18this is between spurts
00:42:22and McCallum is trying
00:42:24to take advantage of it
00:42:26because I'm like
00:42:26get him out of the fight
00:42:27get him out of the way guys
00:42:27come on
00:42:28he's going to push fight
00:42:29a seemingly even bout
00:42:39as they get to the end
00:42:40of the fifth round
00:42:41much to be said
00:42:42for what both fighters are doing
00:42:44I don't want to get any points
00:42:49I don't want to get any points
00:42:51I don't want to get any points
00:42:51I don't want to get any points
00:42:54all right
00:42:55beginning to use that
00:42:56don't look to the corner now
00:42:59good
00:42:59that's good
00:43:01it's working
00:43:05it's working
00:43:06it's working
00:43:07it's working good
00:43:08a little more pressure
00:43:11a little more pressure
00:43:12keep staying in space
00:43:14he's beginning to give up
00:43:16the center of the ring now
00:43:17now let's look at a comparison
00:43:19of the punching action
00:43:20through round five
00:43:21of this fight
00:43:22compared to the same battle
00:43:23eight months ago
00:43:25and Larry you can see that
00:43:28both fighters were just a little bit
00:43:30busier in the preceding fight
00:43:32although McCallum is close to being on pace
00:43:36tonight for what he did then
00:43:37landing a little bit higher percentage
00:43:39Tony not throwing as many punches
00:43:43it's customary for Tony to dig himself a hole in the first half of the fight
00:43:48climb out of it in the second half
00:43:50sometimes when you give it all you got once and all you get is the draw
00:43:56it bothers with you
00:43:58you say well why should I get once again
00:44:00you got to have good motivators in your corners for these rematches
00:44:05left hook landed for Tony but it was a glancing blow
00:44:23and a right hand for Tony
00:44:26and McCallum goes back to the body and then back upstairs with the Jags
00:44:30right hand shot for Tony
00:44:38you start having that vision problem in those eyes
00:44:42sometimes you start getting called the Jags
00:44:44ordinarily you would not be called red
00:44:46like that one over the top
00:44:47yeah he's having problems on that side
00:44:49well the opportunity is there you say George
00:44:54for Tony to land the right hand
00:44:56anytime he wants
00:44:58I think he's careful though
00:44:59because he realizes he hits this guy
00:45:00with his best
00:45:01he can still linger on for two or three rounds
00:45:12Callum now working effectively behind the jab
00:45:15Tony making little effort to block or slip the jab
00:45:18and he's just eating it when Mike wants to throw it
00:45:20come on
00:45:26for the first time Tony is starting to cut the ring off periodically
00:45:38this is something he didn't do earlier
00:45:40making him go in his direction like hurting Kevin
00:45:50both fighters flurrying to the body inside
00:45:56Tony's right hand was blocked
00:45:59and as you saw he missed wildly with the uppercut there
00:46:02McCallum going back to the body
00:46:05more and more frequently it seems
00:46:15perhaps in the hope of taking James Tony's legs away from him
00:46:19Tony who has a history of having difficulty making 160 pounds
00:46:22down to 158
00:46:24is he over trained
00:46:27did he do too much work in the gym
00:46:28that's what McCallum would like to find out
00:46:29in the latter rounds
00:46:31of a 12 round battle
00:46:33Callum is having a hard time figuring out Tony also
00:46:36doesn't know exactly what he's going to do
00:46:38but there he lands a series of hard body shots George
00:46:41four or five in a row
00:46:42to end round six
00:46:44Tony is getting a little lazy
00:46:49I don't want you to get careless
00:46:50I want you to keep them hands up
00:46:53you hear me?
00:46:54don't give him nothing
00:46:56keep them hands up
00:46:57but keep the left hand going
00:46:59keep them hands up
00:47:00them shots to the body
00:47:01you know how to catch them
00:47:03and when you catch them
00:47:04doing something off of them
00:47:05Harold
00:47:06keep them hands up
00:47:07tell us about your scoring nightmare
00:47:08in this fight
00:47:10through the first half
00:47:11Larry I don't have it as such a nightmare
00:47:12I got it 4 to 2
00:47:1358 to 56
00:47:14James Tony
00:47:15Jim what I'm judging is
00:47:17is who's doing the more damage
00:47:18and let me tell you something
00:47:19it's that home run ball that James Tony is throwing
00:47:21the overhand right that's doing the most damage
00:47:23when he comes over the top with that right hand
00:47:26that's what's doing the damage
00:47:27that's what's scoring the points
00:47:28and that's what I'm scoring
00:47:30you and I are going to agree to disagree on this one
00:47:33because I don't think
00:47:35he's really hurt McCallum with any of those
00:47:38with many of those punches
00:47:40I see it as a scoring nightmare
00:47:432 2 and 2
00:47:442 rounds even 2 rounds apiece
00:47:46I think it's a scoring nightmare
00:47:48and I could see judges going for McCallum at this point
00:47:50he is landing more punches
00:47:53and with a higher rate of accuracy than he is Tony
00:47:56so we have
00:47:58a split
00:47:59opinion
00:48:00at ringside
00:48:02and you never know what
00:48:03the judges are going to do in a fight like this
00:48:06saw McCallum stretch his legs out in between rounds
00:48:09and I saw Tony sit still almost bored
00:48:12it can make a difference
00:48:13you can catch a young kid bored
00:48:14you can do a lot of things to him
00:48:15so long as he doesn't know you're hurting him
00:48:20well the question is
00:48:25is Tony discouraged and down
00:48:27or is he well within himself
00:48:29and so confident that he feels as though he can do whatever he wants
00:48:32and I think it's a ladder
00:48:33he sits back to admire his work sometimes
00:48:35and the other guy goes on and lend more punches
00:48:38that kind of overconfidence wouldn't serve him well
00:48:40against a real professional like McCallum
00:48:43who is schooled in the art of seizing every opportunity
00:48:46I agree
00:48:48McCallum is not looking for a knockout in there George
00:48:50he just wants to score
00:48:51that's what he's doing
00:48:52he's doing a good job of it
00:48:55Tony's hanging around with his mother a lot
00:48:57he's got a lot of mother whip about it
00:48:58you never know what's on his mind
00:49:00he hangs around with the old folks you know
00:49:02not that I'm old you know
00:49:04she's not old George
00:49:05she's younger than you and me
00:49:06isn't that nice
00:49:08hey
00:49:09more than half the world is
00:49:13Tony landing a series of shots there
00:49:15as they came off the ropes
00:49:16none of them real hard blows
00:49:19and Callum goes back to the body
00:49:21referee Joe Fortez warned him between rounds to keep him up
00:49:25Mike just missing with a long left hand there
00:49:28and Tony lands the left hook
00:49:29but Callum is saying if you're not going to do anything
00:49:36I may as well do something
00:49:38that's what's happening in this box tonight
00:49:47you really have to wonder
00:49:48why the seemingly stronger James Tony
00:49:50doesn't work harder to try to exert pressure
00:49:53unlike McCallum
00:49:54coming in too light too quick
00:49:56158 he's probably been like that for 10
00:50:018 to 10 days
00:50:03right hand over the top landed for Tony
00:50:05another disagreement between Larry Merchant and Harold Lederman
00:50:08as to whether it did any damage
00:50:11get him out get him out get him out come on
00:50:14it's hard to tell how much damage some of those punches are doing
00:50:17because McCallum takes such a good punch
00:50:19he's never been on the canvas
00:50:21this is his 12th year as a professional cross fighter
00:50:24now the mouthpiece is out again
00:50:27and referee Joe Cortez will look for an opportunity to replace it
00:50:30and he does
00:50:32timeout
00:50:33he leaves Tony in his corner
00:50:34doesn't make him go to a neutral corner
00:50:36brings McCallum back to his corner
00:50:37to replace the mouthpiece for the second time in the bout
00:50:41someone needs to scream into Tony here
00:50:43man you're in a title match here
00:50:45he looks very bored
00:50:46he looks very bored
00:50:53now Cortez sends Tony to the neutral corner
00:50:55and he comes over and smiles at us
00:50:57alright come on time in
00:50:59let's go
00:51:00as though amused by the ennui of it all
00:51:04and Callum goes back to work
00:51:06get him out get him out get him out
00:51:07get him out get him out
00:51:08crowd chanting Tony
00:51:09Tony
00:51:10and I think it's good because he's got an interest in this box
00:51:13a relatively tidy or small crowd but very enthusiastic
00:51:25and there you see the new Rasta influenced hairstyle for WBC super welterweight champion Terry Norris
00:51:36with his wife Kelly at ringside Terry
00:51:40looking forward to his battle here September 26 on HBO against Simon Brown
00:51:45that for Norris's 154 pound world championship
00:51:50that was Terry Norris
00:51:52that was Terry Norris
00:51:54you see the hairstyle before and after
00:51:57here's a flurry by Tony good left hand
00:52:05staying in tight both fighters and within punching distance almost continually through this fight
00:52:11and that's the sign of good fighters
00:52:14boxing lessons on
00:52:16through round 7
00:52:17McCallum has thrown 490 punches and landed 200
00:52:20reporting the punch count numbers
00:52:22Tony has thrown nearly 100 fewer punches
00:52:25and landed 75 fewer
00:52:28but yet Harold Rederman has Tony ahead
00:52:31this is the dilemma for scorers at this bout
00:52:34round 8
00:52:35champion James Coney in the gold trunks
00:52:38challenger Mike McCallum in the red
00:52:43Tony is 24 years old
00:52:45McCallum is 35
00:52:47McCallum has been the busier fighter
00:52:49McCallum has been trying all night to make
00:52:52Tony go backwards
00:52:54he's been not able to do it but he's trying
00:52:56and he's starting to help him
00:52:58little bit by little bit
00:53:0135 years old he's been throwing 70 punches a round
00:53:06he's taking a point away from McCallum
00:53:13let's go
00:53:14he's going to be very costly
00:53:15in a fight like this
00:53:17and it's hard for us to have seen a series of flagrant violations that should have led to a point being taken away
00:53:21what do you think George?
00:53:28I don't see it happening over and over enough to take a point
00:53:33I agree with you guys
00:53:36let the fighters decide it
00:53:38Harold Lederman
00:53:40Harold Lederman get on microphone
00:53:42why did Joe Cortez just take a point from Mike McCallum
00:53:45Jim, Joe Cortez was wanting Mike McCallum for a long time for low glows
00:53:49he's been wanting him constantly to keep his punches up
00:53:51he told him a few rounds before
00:53:53if he doesn't keep his punches up he's going to pull a point
00:53:55and that's what he did
00:53:56when Mike McCallum threw that punch behind the back
00:53:58Cortez got mid
00:53:59but he really put the point for low glows
00:54:01let's go
00:54:02come on
00:54:03didn't seem to get enough to warrant the deduction of a point
00:54:07now McCallum and Tony are giving and taking against the ropes
00:54:11during Harold's discussion you saw Tony land two or three hard shots
00:54:15including an uppercut that snapped McCallum's head back
00:54:18surprisingly Tony is fighting like the older boxer
00:54:25yeah he really is
00:54:28looking for opportunities in small spurts
00:54:32come on
00:54:34and now Cortez stops the action again this time for a glove repair
00:54:40that's a very important thing because that glove can really get in your eye
00:54:43and as you're swinging a punch and just putting one eye out
00:54:46okay that's good that's good
00:54:48well referee Joe Cortez
00:54:50a long time New Jersey institution who's recently relocated to Las Vegas
00:54:55and he's working here in Nevada now
00:54:57has put his imprint on the fight
00:55:02both fighters trying to go to the body inside
00:55:06and Tony is the busier of the two for the moment
00:55:09round eight has been a good one for James Tony
00:55:12who has applied more pressure for McCallum
00:55:14than was the case in previous rounds
00:55:19he's so effective with these short rights Tony is
00:55:21I wonder why he's not using them
00:55:23whenever he gets close he can land it
00:55:25there are a thousand things to wonder about George
00:55:27but he shows you that talent every once in a while
00:55:29and then McCallum lands a punch
00:55:31that stops Tony in his tracks
00:55:33as round eight comes to a close
00:55:35one point
00:55:40keep that defense tight
00:55:42don't give him nothing
00:55:44you want to keep him catching up
00:55:45keep him fighting for behind
00:55:47keep him fighting for behind
00:55:52keep the left hand up
00:55:53keep using the left hand
00:55:55hook off of it
00:55:56when you hook off of the time it's double
00:55:57let's take a look at the punches
00:55:59that caused the referee to take a point away
00:56:04oh give me a break
00:56:07give me a break
00:56:08whether or not he thought
00:56:09McCallum had hit below the belt earlier
00:56:12what did that got to do with what just happened there
00:56:14and then close
00:56:16with an uppercut
00:56:17get underneath
00:56:18and go with that good hook
00:56:32so the little lift for James Tony as referee Joe Cortez
00:56:35deducted a point from McCallum in the eighth round
00:56:37in what promises to be a close tightly scored bout
00:56:41and a little bit of a nightmare
00:56:43as we pointed out so frequently for the judges
00:56:45as of the contrast in style and effort
00:56:48on the part of the two fighters
00:56:49Tony working harder now again
00:56:51to begin round nine
00:56:52lands a left hand
00:56:53McCallum comes right back
00:56:57and I think that was the best punch of the whole fight
00:56:59whiffled by James Tony
00:57:02a strong enough statement
00:57:04that Mike McCallum wanted to retaliate immediately
00:57:06oh we got it out
00:57:07we got it out
00:57:08come on we got it out
00:57:09come on
00:57:10come on
00:57:17body body body for McCallum
00:57:19let's go
00:57:20let's clean around guys
00:57:26those were important body shots
00:57:27McCallum is starting to land now
00:57:30he works a little harder in the clinches
00:57:32than does James Tony
00:57:34Tony has a tendency to relax in there
00:57:36McCallum takes advantage by pounding to the rib cage
00:57:39over the 12 grand distance
00:57:40it all adds up over the 12 grand distance
00:57:43Distance
00:57:53When he wrestling inside come on
00:58:05I think Tony's making a mistake
00:58:07He's conceding some of those right hands that
00:58:09Come on
00:58:11He's allowed him to just throw anytime he wants
00:58:13Well
00:58:15And as he usually does he's conceding
00:58:17Whole minutes and sometimes two minutes
00:58:19Of various rounds
00:58:21When he wants
00:58:23To press the action
00:58:25He tends to land more than his opponent
00:58:27And when he sits back he gets hit
00:58:31Come on
00:58:33Come on
00:58:35Come on
00:58:37Let's go guys
00:58:39Tony's dream
00:58:41Somehow I think he didn't get enough liquids in his diet
00:58:43The dehydration
00:58:45Doesn't have a whole lot of sweat on his body
00:58:47Or anything
00:58:48Well
00:58:49It bothered him dramatically in the fight with Dave Tiberi a year ago
00:58:52The fight that ultimately led to a Senate investigation of boxing
00:58:56When Tiberi's home
00:58:58Tiberi's home state senator from Delaware
00:59:00Senator Ross decided to convene a subcommittee
00:59:02After Tony was given a split decision over Tiberi
00:59:05And about which Tony was badly bothered
00:59:08By dehydration
00:59:10And couldn't mount the full effort
00:59:12Tony was able to land a good body punch
00:59:15One of the time we were talking
00:59:19We're at the Reno's Fox Convention Center
00:59:21HBO's World Championship Boxing
00:59:23Bringing you the IVF Middleweight Championship fight
00:59:27Green plant champion James Toney in the Gold Shorts
00:59:29Challenger Mike McCallum in the red
00:59:36Nine rounds complete
00:59:38You got to get your feet set to punch Mike
00:59:44Harold
00:59:46You got to get your feet set to punch
00:59:48Three quarters of the fight
00:59:49How do you see it now?
00:59:50Larry I got it six rounds to three
00:59:5287-83 James Toney
00:59:54Giving him an extra point for the point that Joe Cortez took away
00:59:56Jim I think that he's just doing a little bit too much damage
00:59:58I think he's landing the better shots
01:00:00The ninth round was a classic James Toney round
01:00:02He dogged it for two and a half minutes
01:00:04And landed effective shots for 30 seconds
01:00:06But still in all I think he did enough for the ninth red to win it
01:00:08I got him six to three
01:00:10I think Tony's winning the fight
01:00:12I have it four rounds to three
01:00:15Two even
01:00:17But remember that Tony also has an extra point
01:00:21From that referee decision
01:00:22There is a good left hand
01:00:23Perhaps the best shot of the night
01:00:31Well the two men have now fought 21 rounds of boxing against each other
01:00:35In round nine James Toney threw only 50 punches
01:00:37That's the lowest punch output for either fighter
01:00:40In a round in either fight
01:00:43And still with the relatively short effort
01:00:46Harold Letterman saw enough to give him the round
01:00:49So you see why James Toney creates questions for fans, scorers, and opponents
01:00:57I can tell you this
01:00:58McCallum corner man has taken a long time to get into that ring
01:01:02And by the time he actually gets set
01:01:04It's almost time for the rest time to be over
01:01:06I think they should have made some concessions
01:01:08So he wouldn't have to climb up so high
01:01:10Maybe turn the uh
01:01:11The stool a little in his direction
01:01:13Where he can stay on the outside
01:01:14You're talking about Eddie Kutt
01:01:16And he's a great trainer
01:01:17But he's taking a little too much time
01:01:19And I think the uh
01:01:20Athletic commission should have allowed for that
01:01:22In a sport of tiny margins
01:01:25There's a potential small edge for Tony
01:01:28Yeah
01:01:34I would advise turn the speed
01:01:35Just a little bit to the
01:01:37To the manager and having the commissioner right there
01:01:39To see that no nothing fancy is going on
01:01:41George in the other corner
01:01:43It is round ten
01:01:44Wouldn't you by now be telling James Toney
01:01:46To turn up the heat and throw more punches?
01:01:48Tony is doing a good job
01:01:51He's just not doing it as good as he ought to
01:01:53When you're in the title match
01:01:54I would tell him to get enthusiastic
01:01:55Start throwing like punches
01:01:56You are right
01:01:57You don't want to give a title away
01:02:02You don't want to give a title away
01:02:07Remember that in the last fight
01:02:08December of last year
01:02:09Tony went into the 12th round
01:02:11Needing to win the round
01:02:12On all three scorecards
01:02:14Just to merit a draw
01:02:15As it turned out
01:02:16He got the job done
01:02:19Now McCallum has Tony backed into a corner
01:02:21And is landing shots
01:02:28Tony boxes his way out of the corner
01:02:30By going into McCallum's body
01:02:31And I think it's a lack of confidence
01:02:33And his stamina
01:02:34That's what it is
01:02:35He's just not going to push himself too much
01:02:40Right hand landed for Tony
01:02:42McCallum tries to come back with the left
01:02:44McCallum blocking shots to the body
01:02:46From Tony and going to the body himself
01:02:51And I think picking up valuable points
01:02:57Let's go
01:02:58It's hard to make a living on body punching
01:03:02Because sometimes you don't get scored fairly
01:03:04But Mike McCallum has been getting by with it for 12 years now
01:03:07The body snatches
01:03:08A nickname given to him
01:03:10By one time friend and sparring partner Thomas Ernst
01:03:13And another Joe Fortes
01:03:18I think it has a lot to do with the right
01:03:20His right eye
01:03:21Some nerve problems over there
01:03:22Will not allow you to bite down when you want to
01:03:24That was mouthpiece incident number three
01:03:26Mouthpiece replacement number three
01:03:28For Joe Fortes
01:03:38Come on guys
01:03:39Can you clean it out?
01:03:40Where guy?
01:03:41Where guy?
01:03:42Come on
01:03:43Watch ahead, guys
01:03:44Another brief boxing clinic to end round 10.
01:03:51And as McCallum goes to his corner, here's a look at Eddie Fox trying to make his way in.
01:03:55And there, pop a smurf, as Riddick Bowe calls him, finally arrives and moves in to talk to Mike.
01:04:02Yeah, it's very close, Mike.
01:04:03You've got to get the next round.
01:04:08You've got to have this one or the next one.
01:04:27And don't wait for him.
01:04:29You'll be first.
01:04:32You'll be first.
01:04:33All right?
01:04:34You heard Eddie Futch tell McCallum he has to get the next two rounds.
01:04:41He knows it's a close fight.
01:04:42He probably thinks McCallum is behind by a point or two.
01:04:49You saw the punch stat numbers, which weigh heavily in favor of Mike McCallum.
01:04:54Get him out.
01:04:55Get him out.
01:04:55Get him out.
01:04:55Come on.
01:04:56Get him out.
01:05:26Get him out.
01:05:29McCallum initiating the action with his jab over and over.
01:05:33You've heard Tony Strain of Bill Miller telling him the beeper.
01:05:36But he has not been first as often as has Mike McCallum.
01:05:45Come on.
01:05:45Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:46Watch that.
01:05:47Come on.
01:05:48Give me a clean round.
01:05:48Both of you guys.
01:05:49Right hand landed by Tony.
01:05:58You know it's about time when your fighter starts making all that money.
01:06:02Do they have dietitians?
01:06:03People who can determine if you're close to dehydration know how to measure you.
01:06:09The old days of just the boxing trainers are gone.
01:06:10Tony is.
01:06:11Another right hand for Tony.
01:06:12But you're right.
01:06:13He drives a bone.
01:06:14So what do you do?
01:06:15You get out there to the colleges and some of these guys, they got a lot of degrees.
01:06:21We can use them in boxing.
01:06:22And he's got a mother with a couple of degrees.
01:06:23And she makes cookies and cookies and cookies and cookies.
01:06:24So what do you do?
01:06:25You get out there to the colleges and some of these guys, they got a lot of degrees.
01:06:28We can use them in boxing.
01:06:29And he's got a mother with a couple of degrees.
01:06:30And she makes cookies and cookies and cookies.
01:06:31So what do you do?
01:06:32So what do you do?
01:06:33You get out there to the colleges and some of these guys, they got a lot of degrees.
01:06:37We can use them in boxing.
01:06:38And he's got a mother with a couple of degrees.
01:06:41And she makes cookies and cookies.
01:06:43My kind of degrees.
01:06:44I guess she's a nutritionist at sorts, huh?
01:06:47I like those.
01:06:48Come on.
01:06:49That's your kind of nutrition.
01:06:51Woo!
01:06:52She can do it too.
01:06:53We ate some of those pies and cakes.
01:06:56While you were fighting Alex Stewart.
01:06:58Who had the easiest job that day, huh?
01:07:00That's the fight I wanted to be down here with you guys.
01:07:02It is precisely because of fights like this that boxing judges should and do work for years
01:07:22learning how to score fights before they're given the privilege of judging big time championship fights.
01:07:29You must have some understanding of the nuance, the subtle details of the sport to be able to form an opinion as to who is winning this one.
01:07:38It's a real hard fight to score because there hasn't been any knockdowns.
01:07:43Anything.
01:07:44Last round.
01:07:45Last round coming up, Mike.
01:07:46Oh, look.
01:07:47You've got to have this one.
01:07:48You've got to have this one.
01:07:49You've got to have this one.
01:07:50Okay, Mike, this is the last round.
01:07:53Give me a clean round.
01:07:54Three.
01:07:55All right.
01:07:56I want to say, give me three.
01:07:57All right.
01:07:58Give me a good three minutes.
01:08:06You the boss.
01:08:11Show him here the boss.
01:08:17minutes give it to me
01:08:34get busy for mama carol your score going into the last round larry seven rounds to four 106 102
01:08:40james tony he's making it happen mccallum just has no power left in his shots tony's winning a fight
01:08:47a fascinating conclusion mccallum by punch out numbers has landed nearly a hundred more
01:08:52punches than james tony harold letterman believes tony is clearly winning the fight
01:08:57two careers at stake now as round 12 begins in the gold trunks you have an undefeated young champion
01:09:03hoping to move on towards superstar status in the sport in the red trunks one of the great cult
01:09:08figures in the sport over the past 12 years a champion who never got the right to fight against
01:09:14the leading lights of his day leonard hearns hagler durand he must satisfy himself for trying to take
01:09:21money out of the mouth of a man like james tony and he may well be doing it as round 12 continues
01:09:39i think if he pulls this off mike mccallum will call it the biggest win of his career even bigger
01:09:43than the wins over three million jacks what worries me is that that one point taken away from mccallum
01:09:50could be the difference in a fight like this and that would be tragic that would be an injustice
01:09:56so it would appear to us
01:10:00the judges are fans just like you and me a lot of times they're not looking at all the technical
01:10:05stuff the spinning and the little shots that don't mean nothing that we see they're only looking for
01:10:10the head move to sweat the fly and in that area tony has done it that's right because tony with the
01:10:17harder punches has made the sweat fly more than has mccallum well in the 12th round in december
01:10:25james tony came out with a brilliant effort easily won the round on all three scorecards and earned the
01:10:31draw mccallum has so far presented or prevented tony from making that kind of statement here
01:10:37the judge was given good advice in that in uh in the meeting yesterday yes harold lederman gave good
01:11:01advice to james tony when he told him he should fight all three minutes of every round not only
01:11:07was it good for this is a point in the fight when the 24 year old ought to be more active than the 35
01:11:14year old but i don't see it happening 35 is young you know
01:11:23less than 30 seconds to go you saw tony throw the hard right hand hoping to bring rain but it didn't
01:11:29happen and mccallum goes back to the body trying to flurry one last time for the judges who'll make
01:11:35the last statement who will put the punctuation at the end of the 12 round paragraph cortez will he
01:11:42calls timeout again yeah the gloves are starting to hang again and like i said it's very dangerous
01:11:49well it's been a three-man battle all the way
01:11:51and mccallum adopts the body language of the winner while tony simply stalks around the ring
01:12:06one of those days you just don't know where you are unless it's another draw you're going to have
01:12:10at least one tremendously disappointed fighter in there larry you know the great red smith used to
01:12:16say the way to judge a fight is to get a 10-year-old kid to come in here look at the fight at the
01:12:21end of the fight point to the guy and say he won and i think even a 10-year-old kid would have a hard
01:12:28tonight well let's look at harold's final scorecard and see how he sized it up well jim
01:12:35i got it fairly close seven rounds to five 115 to 112 favorite james tony i just think that the punches that
01:12:42really counted were landed by james tony i think that he shrugged off mike mccallum shots real well
01:12:47he walked away unscathed don't have a mark on him and at the end of the fight mike mccallum had very
01:12:52little zex left in his shots i mean mike mccallum just wasn't you know landing a real big hard shot
01:12:57he was learning a lot of punches but with not enough behind him i think james tony landed enough power
01:13:02shots to win this fight how about you george i'm a 10 year older i don't know what's happening i don't
01:13:08care to pick one or the other huh no not at all because you can give it to mccallum because he was
01:13:13more enthusiastic but tony of course landed better hard puncher all right well we are in total suspense
01:13:20as we go up the ring announcer michael buffer for the official decision
01:13:27ladies and gentlemen we go to the scorecards phil newman scores the bout 114
01:13:32114 he has it even tom mcdonough scores the bout 118 to 110 doug tucker has it 117 to 110 for the winner by
01:13:46majority decision and still
01:13:49so the nevada judges agree with harold letterman ladies and gentlemen and give the fight to the man
01:14:07who threw the harder shots
01:14:11but the margin of victory on those two judges scorecards 118 110 117 111
01:14:17even with the point deducted from mccallum because of low blows and the holding and hitting incident
01:14:25in a later round that seems like an awfully wide margin in this fight total punches from the punch
01:14:30stat numbers james tony landing by our count 110 fewer blows in the bout than his opponent mike mccallum
01:14:39throwing 135 fewer blows in the bout nevertheless it is tony the champion who gets the decision
01:14:46and it is mccallum who winds up with a bitter defeat only the second of his career and you look
01:14:52again at the numbers the judge from new jersey scoring it 114 apiece the judge from nevada won 17 to 110
01:15:00and the fellow from tacoma washington won 18 to 110. that's the way they sliced it and the winner by
01:15:08majority decision and still champion is 24 year old james tony who stands by now with larry merchant
01:15:15wow all right james tony still middleweight champion it was in effect james a split decision because
01:15:24there was one point given to taken away from mike mccallum how do you feel about the scoring how do
01:15:32you feel about the fight okay first before i get on about the fight i tell to kevin a little bit back at
01:15:37home greg and annette jimmy griggs all my fellas in the hood i'll be home tomorrow congratulations to
01:15:42kevin william for getting married today and when i don't say we also got married today yo okay now
01:15:48that we've gotten rid of the social calendar what about the fight oh the fight was a good fight for
01:15:52me you know like i said i came out dictated the pace from round one i think it should have been
01:15:56unanimous decision i don't know where the judge scored at 114 114 at but you know hey a win is a win
01:16:03what why weren't you able to hurt him more is he just too tough and too clever to really hurt
01:16:09well our game plan was just working keep working him if the shots there take it but not don't rush
01:16:14anything like i did last fight because you know last fight i went wild on when i got him hurt so
01:16:18this time our game plan was just take it easy be smooth about it and you were more consistent
01:16:24through the fight rather than fighting in spurts were you in better shape is that why you were able
01:16:28to do that man i'm in hell of a shape i could have won 25 rounds tonight you know like i said i'm in
01:16:33the best shape i've ever been in my career even for the michael nunn fight but you know like i said
01:16:37hey i rise to the occasion yesterday you tried to dog me i was saying that i'm not i don't fight
01:16:42you know i fight in spurts too much and don't get enough rounds and you know no punch them to win
01:16:47the rounds but today i came out surprised y'all a little bit and harold adamantuga i see you down
01:16:52there you peeping okay who's next we hear that you might move up to fight or ron barkley do you want to
01:16:58fight terry norris you want to fight julian jackson what's your schedule well i gotta say
01:17:04bob baron my man here he got hey i would like you know i like to step up and fight middleweight
01:17:09super middleweight because the middleweight division was too hard for me to make to make it but i did it
01:17:13because bob baron said hey james we got to do it this time get michael calum out the way and we're going
01:17:18to the bigger and better things so i did what bob told me to do so now it's time for me to go up
01:17:22do what we have to do but like i said right now go home enjoy this my birthday was monday
01:17:27now i'm finally going to enjoy it with some burger king here we go baby burger king burger king
01:17:32yo it's not the bob in because he's my man john king kiss my ass
01:17:38go get julian jackson in here baby that's the only way i stay down julian jackson will take off baby
01:17:43that's all i gotta say will take off i'm glad we did get to see the angry man
01:17:49issue a few angry challenges at the end of that interview back to you at ringside
01:17:55not so terribly angry after all because now as he says he gets to go to burger king and
01:18:01that's a sentiment we can all appreciate i guess i think the uh after fight interview was more
01:18:05exciting than the fight especially the burger king part indeed if he goes up to 168 pounds as he's
01:18:11discussing and fights against iran barkley that would be a war and he would be well advised to come to a
01:18:18fight like that ready to fight three minutes of every round the boy was drained he didn't have any
01:18:22energy like i said he needed a dietitian someone he claims otherwise he claims he was in the best
01:18:27shape of his career not at all he just wasn't there all right mike mccallum very disappointed to
01:18:32say the least standing by with larry merchant all right mike first let's talk about the point that
01:18:40the referee took away from you what did you think happened he said i was hitting low but the boat was
01:18:46hitting low huh you said you said hit low but it looked like a backhand with a little slap oh yeah
01:18:53he pushed his head away in the back and i put my head in my hand in the back and hit him that wasn't
01:18:57a bad shot all right if that hadn't happened you would have still lost a split decision what is your
01:19:03feelings about you got the decision to win huh very simple you got to knock him out to win why
01:19:09because that's their fighter simply that if you knew that could you have done more to try to knock
01:19:15him out or is he just too tough no he's not too tough to get knocked out you just say i just couldn't
01:19:20get put a shot together together to get him out of there well the gallant fight we fought great you
01:19:25know nothing to take away from him but once 110 to 115 come on that is so plain i mean this is a tough fight
01:19:34so i take that far i say i take it mike that uh you're going to be around for a while still fighting
01:19:39well i don't know man right now i'm so disappointed you know i mean it's it's one thing when you fight
01:19:44you give it your best and you're beaten fear now 116 to 110 that's ridiculous so the feeling you have
01:19:55is really is that you you've never really been beaten up in the ring and you don't think it happened
01:20:00tonight no definitely not nothing to take away from him again he's a good fighter you know he got a good
01:20:05fight good showing and he won his title they say he won so he won but i feel i feel i won if not not
01:20:13that far 117 to 110 that's ridiculous one one guy had it 118 to 110 just to make you feel even worse
01:20:20think about it thank you mike all right all right jim it's okay and while mike mccallum was saying that
01:20:26george foreman is here saying he's right right because he was beaten he just wasn't beaten up
01:20:31and sometimes it's hard to distinguish as a matter of fact i wasn't whipped in africa
01:20:35i know and i want the people in louisiana and florida but you didn't fall down in africa because you
01:20:39were tired and he was hitting that's not so let me say again that the people in louisiana and florida
01:20:44i want them to know that life is just not going on with us we they're we're still uh thinking about
01:20:48them oh yeah absolutely everybody thinks about victims of the hurricane in florida and louisiana
01:20:52and i think about mike mcgallum and kind of hope i seldom say this i kind of hope that at age 35 he
01:20:58sees fit to continue fighting because he doesn't look to me as though he ought to be calling a halt to his
01:21:03career he really didn't lose that fight he really didn't lose that fight he didn't get beat up and that's the
01:21:07distinction there i think you're right i think there's plenty left for mike mccallum if in fact
01:21:12he can find it in him to want to go on after the feeling he's going to take away from tonight's fight
01:21:18you agree larry merchant mike mccallum ought to keep fighting if in fact he's disappointed with what
01:21:22happened here well i don't know anybody else in the middleweight division that uh is sure to beat him
01:21:28so why shouldn't he i mean he can go on until he's 40 years old he's a good fighter he fought uh he gave a
01:21:33good hard brisk effort tonight no reason that he shouldn't go on um as for tony all you can say is
01:21:41as we said earlier he's young he's strong and he doesn't know how to lose well we'll see more of
01:21:47james tony for sure whether he stays at the middleweight level for another championship fight
01:21:52or goes up to 168 pounds and tries for iran barkley as he has talked about doing i really don't
01:21:58understand that he has the body of a pure middleweight he may have to suffer a little bit for
01:22:04his art in his training but he ought to be to stay here just as marvin haggler did he's now had about
01:22:11seven title defenses he can go on and be a real force in boxing maybe a star maybe a pay-per-view kind of
01:22:19fighter if some of those other middleweights out there will get in the ring with him
01:22:23i think he just it's just too hard for him to train but he is a middleweight he should stay a
01:22:30middleweight and could wind up as the best middleweight since haggler i'll bet you bob
01:22:34arum will say the same thing to him tonight news of boxing from this week final details finally put
01:22:39together for the november 13 riddick bow versus evander holyfield heavyweight championship fight
01:22:45and in light of that larry it's time for you and i to reflect back to some words that we offered to
01:22:49the audience before our recent telecast of beau versus pierre kutzer we talked about the long
01:22:55campaign against apartheid that uh rock newman the manager of riddick bow had mounted in the months
01:23:02leading up to the fight tying that of course to the fact that kutzer is a south african and rock
01:23:07newman took great offense at some of the comments we made and i just want to say looking back that upon
01:23:13reflection we never should have belittled or disparaged newman's stance against apartheid which is
01:23:19serious significant and deserves to be treated as such although he did send a fighter to fight in
01:23:25south africa when there was a worldwide boycott on that doesn't mean that he doesn't genuinely feel
01:23:33for the injustices that go on there and we ought to make that uh clear no reason to believe that he's
01:23:40faking it and we want to give him the best of that and together we look ahead to the november 13
01:23:45riddick bow versus evander holyfield title fight as does of course rock newman right now it's time to
01:23:51look ahead to something that you'll see later on this evening on hbo gary shandling's brand new
