00:00:00And coming up next from Reno, Nevada, our main event.
00:00:04James lights out Tony, returns to the ring for the first time since he fought for the WBA Heavyweight Championship,
00:00:10squaring off against Dominic Gwynn.
00:00:15Well, in the words of Howard Cosell, James Toney is truculent,
00:00:19one of the more colorful and bombastic fighters of the last 20 years.
00:00:22Even when Toney was struggling on the scales at middleweight and super middleweight,
00:00:26it was difficult to envision him as growing into a player in the heavyweight division.
00:00:31But his career as a heavyweight has been marked by victories followed by setbacks.
00:00:35Now at 37, Toney starts again.
00:00:38Al Bernstein spoke with the ageless contender.
00:00:45James, since you became a heavyweight, it's kind of been two steps forward, one step backward.
00:00:50A lot of things have happened.
00:00:51Back in 2003, when you stepped in against Evander Holyfield,
00:00:55when you stopped him in the ninth round, can you remember exactly how you felt at that moment?
00:01:00See, I told you.
00:01:02I said, I'm going to hold the field up.
00:01:03You guys looked at me like, okay.
00:01:05And what happened?
00:01:07He didn't pay his electric bill, and his lights went out that night.
00:01:10You know what I'm saying?
00:01:11That win vaulted you immediately toward the top of the heavyweight division.
00:01:16Did you say to yourself then, world's my oyster, it's all going to be smooth sailing?
00:01:20The world is mine.
00:01:22They better back up.
00:01:23I'm coming.
00:01:23But instead of gathering momentum, a training injury brought his career to an abrupt halt.
00:01:29After that Holyfield fight, and you had that Achilles injury, which was a very bad break for you,
00:01:36how did you keep yourself mentally strong during that time?
00:01:39I'm hard-headed, man.
00:01:40I'm hard.
00:01:41I'm very hard-headed.
00:01:42You know, for a second, yeah, it got to me for a second, but then after the cast came off and I was able to start getting mobile with it again, I was like, oh yeah, we can do this.
00:01:50After almost a year, Tony returned to the ring for a tune-up against undefeated Rydell Booker.
00:01:56But once again, he was plagued by an injury, this time a bicep and tricep tear.
00:02:01When I took it in the first round, he snapped both of them.
00:02:05You know, I couldn't stop it.
00:02:08You know, it's not going to stop me from doing what I'm doing.
00:02:10I went 11 rounds with the arms like it was.
00:02:12It was painful as hell, but you know, I told you, I'm hard-headed.
00:02:15I don't know where to quit.
00:02:16What medication did you take for that shoulder injury then after when you were rehabbing and getting back?
00:02:23Well, I was taking on, we started pre-kneed alone, and it helped build, heal the muscles for the kind of bicep, tricep tear, and I put a cadaver in there, the healing process.
00:02:32Last April, with the shoulder still healing, Tony beat John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight title.
00:02:38Tony fulfilling and bringing up the heavyweight champion!
00:02:42My arm was still bothering me, but, you know, hey, I did what I had to do.
00:02:48I beat him with one arm, and I won.
00:02:50Hands down, fair and square.
00:02:52But his celebration was short-lived.
00:02:55For less than two weeks later, the New York State Athletic Commission suspended Tony and stripped him of his title for taking an illegal substance.
00:03:02Tony steadfastly maintains he took a prescribed medication to treat his injury and not to enhance his performance.
00:03:09When the controversy happened after that, and they alleged that you were using a performance-enhancing drug.
00:03:16I was on steroids that night.
00:03:17Man, I put a lot of companies out of business where my body was looking.
00:03:21I'm serious.
00:03:22I was looking to tell me.
00:03:23Is there a certain amount of resentment over the whole process, or do you have to kind of put that aside?
00:03:27You know, it don't matter to me.
00:03:29You know, everybody, I'm the people's champ.
00:03:30Hey, I'm just having fun.
00:03:31I'm ready to go ahead and get the rest of the belts.
00:03:34And then after I get the rest of the belts, I'm throwing them in the trash can.
00:03:36You know, I'm not, I'm belt on the fine James Toney.
00:03:39It's supposed to be the fighter made the belt, not the belt made the fighter.
00:03:42People got it twisted here.
00:03:44Do you feel like you just turned 37?
00:03:46I just turned 27.
00:03:49Well, up here.
00:03:51You don't feel like time's running out, there's a time issue?
00:03:54I'm looking forward to bigger and better things.
00:03:57And whatever happens, happens.
00:03:59But you know where?
00:04:00Ain't nobody in the hell with the vision going to beat me.
00:04:01Nobody.
00:04:04Nobody.
00:04:05Nobody.
00:04:11He's really got to learn to open up some more.
00:04:13Ever since he won his first major world title 14 years ago, James Toney has proven that he can talk.
00:04:19And yes, he can back up that talk.
00:04:21But if added weight hasn't slowed him, injuries and that positive test for steroids surely have.
00:04:26Tonight he attempts to regain momentum.
00:04:28But Al, can he climb back to the top one more time?
00:04:32You know, it seems implausible, doesn't it, that Toney, who hasn't lost a boxing match in eight years, is trying to regain momentum.
00:04:39But he is.
00:04:40And to do that, he needs to be healthy.
00:04:41And he appears to be 100% physically fit for this match.
00:04:46Now, Toney is a defensive genius.
00:04:48And he's a superb counterpuncher.
00:04:50And it takes a very consistent effort to beat him.
00:04:53And consistency has been pretty elusive for Dominic Gwynn.
00:04:56Now, he's had flashes of excellence reminding us why we're all so excited about him as a pro's prospect after he had a storied amateur career.
00:05:04But he's come up just short in his important fights.
00:05:07Lack of focus and conditioning have hampered him.
00:05:09And so, his blueprint for success tonight requires both those elements.
00:05:16Part of the focus is to remember to work the body against the 37-year-old Toney, especially early.
00:05:21Gwynn says he averaged 90 punches per round in sparring.
00:05:25A good work rate is essential.
00:05:27To beat Toney, you have to, at some point, land left hand.
00:05:31Gwynn is not, by nature, a left hook artist.
00:05:33But if he throws his favorite jab-right hand combination and does it quickly, it could set up the left hook.
00:05:42But once he throws this punch, he can expect a counter from Toney.
00:05:47Slipping this counter shot would make this scenario perfect for Gwynn.
00:05:57James Toney is a master at disrupting game plans, and Gwynn has been easily distracted in the past.
00:06:03In the center of the ring, Toney won't get hit to the body as much, or anyplace else for that matter.
00:06:08Toney is a superb counter puncher, and the right-hand counter could be an important tool tonight.
00:06:12But Gwynn will throw the same 1-2 combination that John Ruiz did.
00:06:18And Gwynn has a habit of falling in with his head.
00:06:22That's when Toney can nail him with the counter right hand.
00:06:25This is a big danger for Dominic Gwynn tonight.
00:06:28Well, despite being all but written off at age 30, which is young for a heavyweight these days,
00:06:42Dominic Gwynn hoping to become the most famous person from Hot Springs, Arkansas, since Bill Clinton.
00:06:49Gwynn, who admits he's never watched James Toney live or on TV, which is mind-boggling,
00:06:54burst onto the scene after a stellar amateur career, looked spectacular early on as a pro.
00:07:00Herald is the next great American heavyweight, then almost overnight, a total about-base.
00:07:05And it began in his own home state of Arkansas, an awful loss to Monty Barrett.
00:07:10And it happened in the ring walk.
00:07:12He's won 2-1 in his last four.
00:07:15But, Al, now he's got Joe Goosin, a quick-fix trainer.
00:07:19Seems genuinely motivated.
00:07:21But has he taken on too much too soon?
00:07:22Well, you alluded to the Monty Barrett fight, and you alluded to the ring walk.
00:07:26We see him right now coming in.
00:07:27That was in his own hometown.
00:07:29The moment got the better of him.
00:07:30With an adoring crowd cheering, he lost his focus.
00:07:34Tonight, what he can't let make him lose his focus, and that's Joe Goosin on the left of him,
00:07:40is facing his biggest challenge.
00:07:41And make no mistake, James Toney is his biggest challenge.
00:07:44And he better bring his A-game against Tony, that's for sure.
00:07:47You saw Joe Goosin.
00:07:49What a scenario.
00:07:50It's brother against brother tonight.
00:07:52Joe Goosin trains Gwynn.
00:07:54Joe's brother Dan promotes Tony.
00:07:57Joe's become one of the best trainers in the business.
00:08:00And if Gwynn upsets Tony tonight, it would be utterly devastating.
00:08:05A tremendous blow to Dan Goosin, since Tony is his franchise player.
00:08:09Yeah, this is almost an unprecedented situation.
00:08:12But if anybody can handle it, I guess those two care.
00:08:15But so much depends on which Dominic Gwynn shows up tonight.
00:08:19The Gwynn who dismantled Michael Grant, or the Gwynn who froze, literally froze, against
00:08:26Monty Barrett.
00:08:27And the supremely competent, outspoken, at times quite humorous.
00:08:38James lights out Tony, returning to the ring for the first time, since the debacle following
00:08:43the John Ruiz fight six months ago, he told us he feels good, but admitted he did have
00:08:48a little problem with his right hand in training, but no excuses, he said.
00:08:53He said, hey, I fought Ruiz with one arm.
00:08:56He may be the most relaxed fighter you'll ever see.
00:09:01One of the true characters in the sport.
00:09:05Always good for a snappy quote.
00:09:07He summed up his thoughts succinctly tonight.
00:09:08He's hungry.
00:09:09I'm starving.
00:09:10Hey, you know what?
00:09:11Let's say one great thing already for James Tony.
00:09:13He's gotten to the ring quicker than any of the other three fighters.
00:09:16Maybe that shows a certain aggression, which we'd like to see.
00:09:19Well, he's out to prove something, because in his mind, they took the heavyweight belt away
00:09:27from him, and he wants to show that he does not need the drugs.
00:09:32Tony's something else.
00:09:33He says, you know what?
00:09:34The heavyweight division is terrible.
00:09:37Aside from me, of course.
00:09:40He just says everybody's ducking him.
00:09:45All right, let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape from Reno.
00:09:49And the figures pretty much favor Dominic Gwynn at 30.
00:09:51He's seven years younger than Tony.
00:09:53He has the three-and-a-half-inch height advantage and a five-inch edge in reach.
00:09:58But Tony outweighed Gwynn at yesterday's proceedings by 14 pounds, a career heaviest 235.
00:10:06And the notable rules for this fringe title fight.
00:10:09No standing eight count.
00:10:11No three-knockdown rule.
00:10:12A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:10:15If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth round,
00:10:18fights rule to no decision.
00:10:19If it happens after the end of round four, they go to the scorecards.
00:10:26So here at the event center in Reno, we are getting ready for our main event.
00:10:31James lights out Tony versus Dominic Gwynn.

00:14:15Routouni!
00:14:22Once again,
00:14:23a referee in charge,
00:14:24Jay Needy,
00:14:25now to give instructions,
00:14:2612 rounds of boxing schedule.
00:14:2912 rounds,
00:14:30I want you to obey my commands,
00:14:32and don't forget,
00:14:33when I say stop,
00:14:34I mean stop,
00:14:35alright?
00:14:36Keep your punches up.
00:14:38Any questions?
00:14:40Touch gloves now,
00:14:40let's go to work.
00:14:42Don't touch gloves.
00:14:43Okay,
00:14:44don't touch gloves.
00:14:44Hey you guys,
00:14:49gotta wear those things over your head.
00:14:51Jay Needy,
00:14:52with quite a sense of view,
00:14:54and no,
00:14:55they are not friends.
00:14:56Not too many people are,
00:14:57not too many boxers are,
00:14:58to this man,
00:14:59one of the hardest things of the sport,
00:15:01is to hit James Toney.
00:15:02Jay Needy will be here all week.
00:15:04Yeah,
00:15:05don't forget to tip your wages.
00:15:07Dominic Nguyen,
00:15:08an ultra-confident,
00:15:09extremely hungry Nguyen,
00:15:11said he feels good,
00:15:11planned to come out and fight,
00:15:13he'll do whatever it takes.
00:15:15He said you'll see a different Dominic Nguyen,
00:15:17a guy who in the past,
00:15:18has been criticized for being languid,
00:15:21lackluster,
00:15:22not busy enough,
00:15:23frustrating to watch,
00:15:24like there's a missing ingredient,
00:15:26and of course,
00:15:27James Toney,
00:15:28has his own ideas,
00:15:31wearing the,
00:15:31very,
00:15:33intriguing,
00:15:34purple trunks,
00:15:35and the red trunks of Dominic Nguyen.
00:15:37You know,
00:15:37when we saw James Toney the other day,
00:15:39he had a shirt on,
00:15:40we actually thought,
00:15:41he was a little trimmer,
00:15:42he weighed in at the highest weight,
00:15:44he's ever weighed in at,
00:15:45now he's never going to look like Charles Atman,
00:15:48that's for sure.
00:15:48Or you.
00:15:50Or Charles Atman,
00:15:51that's for sure.
00:15:52But nevertheless,
00:15:54he's carrying a little extra weight.
00:15:55Yeah,
00:15:56he was carrying that weight against Ruiz,
00:15:58and he looked very physically solid,
00:16:01against Rydell Booker.
00:16:02And yet against Ruiz,
00:16:03did not,
00:16:04you know,
00:16:04was still active at the end.
00:16:06Now,
00:16:06James Toney himself is,
00:16:08for the most part,
00:16:08a counter puncher,
00:16:09but we see him,
00:16:10as he has been lately,
00:16:12staying in the center of the ring,
00:16:13kind of coming after fighters.
00:16:16Now,
00:16:16for Dominic Nguyen,
00:16:17it is all about work brain.
00:16:19He,
00:16:19in sparring,
00:16:20he said he averaged 90 punches a round.
00:16:22He doesn't expect to average that in this fight.
00:16:24But as he points out,
00:16:25if I go back to averaging 30 like I used to,
00:16:28I'm in big trouble.
00:16:29And here's where Nguyen needs to be active.
00:16:31You see the counter right from Toney.
00:16:33That's something he wants to land a lot tonight.
00:16:37Toney was a 200 pound high school quarterback,
00:16:40went down to middleweight to start his fight career.
00:16:43He's skillful.
00:16:44He's tough.
00:16:45Loves to fight.
00:16:45He's not a fast starter.
00:16:47He's a builder.
00:16:48He accumulates.
00:16:49Breaks people down slowly.
00:16:50There's the left hook from Dominic Nguyen.
00:16:53You must throw that punch against James Toney.
00:16:56It's the one punch you can be assured
00:16:58you have at least a chance to land against him.
00:17:00It's tougher to land a straight right,
00:17:02although that one almost got there.
00:17:05And Toney,
00:17:06as you pointed out earlier,
00:17:07tremendous counter puncher.
00:17:09He's got a very good chin.
00:17:11He's a consummate pro.
00:17:12He kind of slides into his rhythm in the early going.
00:17:17He eventually gets into a faster pace.
00:17:20Now on the inside,
00:17:22which I don't know if Dominic Nguyen wants to be there a lot,
00:17:26he's not that active.
00:17:28You know,
00:17:28his height and reach
00:17:29and his jab and his straight right
00:17:31make the outside a little better for him.
00:17:33And as we come down to the stretch of the round,
00:17:36we'll look to see if Toney
00:17:38looks to rally late and steal the round,
00:17:40which is something he's very famous for.
00:17:42Which, by the way,
00:17:43we saw Chris Bird do often in the previous fight,
00:17:46a fight that had a lot of inactivity
00:17:47during the course of the round.
00:17:48Well, we've already had more action here
00:17:50in the first two and a half minutes
00:17:52than most of that first fight.
00:17:56But Toney can lull you
00:17:58and then jump on you.
00:17:59He did that with John Ruiz.
00:18:01He can play possum
00:18:02and defensively,
00:18:04one of the best.
00:18:05Let me out. Stop.
00:18:06We mentioned old school.
00:18:08They call him,
00:18:10sometimes they call him the mongoose.
00:18:15Saw Gwyn faint with the jab
00:18:17and then he was able to get something in after him.
00:18:20Time!
00:18:21Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:18:27The family of Dominic Gwynn,
00:18:29wife and sister,
00:18:31Monique Breland Gwynn.
00:18:33No relation to Mark Breland,
00:18:35Dominique the sister.
00:18:36He's more as good than that.
00:18:40He's dipping.
00:18:41When you're throwing your jab,
00:18:42he's going to dip,
00:18:44okay?
00:18:44And he's going to slide under that right hand.
00:18:46You've got to go to that left upper cut off that jab,
00:18:48okay?
00:18:48And then a right hand,
00:18:50all right?
00:18:50So you've got to go right from there
00:18:51and pick up his head
00:18:52because he's really dipping it low there.
00:18:54He's getting under your punches.
00:18:55You've got to go to the body
00:18:56even from the outside a little bit.
00:18:58You've got to sneak some body in on him.
00:18:59Now you see,
00:19:00if you throw that right hand
00:19:01and stay out there,
00:19:02he's going to come back
00:19:02with that short arm,
00:19:03right?
00:19:03Okay?
00:19:04So make sure you give him a few things.
00:19:05And then get off your punches a little bit,
00:19:07okay?
00:19:08Use your jab a little bit more.
00:19:09Use a little bit of distance.
00:19:10Start closing the gap
00:19:11and start using both hands now.
00:19:13Let's go.
00:19:15Let's go.
00:19:15Start of a busy week for Joe Goosin.
00:19:18Of course,
00:19:18he's the co-pilot for Diego Corrales.
00:19:22A week from tonight
00:19:23against Jose Luis Castillo
00:19:24in the big rematch
00:19:25that you can see on Showtime pay-per-view.
00:19:27He only joined Gwynn about a month ago,
00:19:30replacing Roddy Shields
00:19:31and Mark Breland.
00:19:32And they had no idea
00:19:34he'd end up fighting James Toney.
00:19:35He was promoted by his brother.
00:19:37But then when the fight came up,
00:19:38they said yes.
00:19:38Now James Toney
00:19:39used to fight off the ropes a lot.
00:19:41I mean,
00:19:41I did so many of his fights.
00:19:43He's a middleweight,
00:19:44super middleweight,
00:19:44light heavyweight.
00:19:45And he used to back himself
00:19:46against the ropes
00:19:47and counterpunch.
00:19:48He's a different boxer now.
00:19:50He stays in the center of the ring.
00:19:51He's more active.
00:19:52Ironically,
00:19:53as I do,
00:19:53a nice punch by Gwynn.
00:19:54If he can get that punch in
00:19:56in this fight,
00:19:57let me tell you something.
00:19:58That gives him
00:19:58a great chance for victory.
00:20:00It's not his most prominent punch.
00:20:03But again,
00:20:03you need it against Tony.
00:20:04Well, at his best,
00:20:05Gwynn,
00:20:06extremely fast hands,
00:20:08but, you know,
00:20:09has to put them together.
00:20:10He's got skills.
00:20:11Look at him.
00:20:12He's working well on the inside
00:20:13and now Tony comes back.
00:20:14Somebody said he doesn't know
00:20:15how talented he is.
00:20:16That's part of the problem.
00:20:17That's a very good statement, Steve.
00:20:18It's really true.
00:20:19And sometimes that's true of people.
00:20:21But he's so much more of a threat
00:20:22when he throws combinations.
00:20:23Nice uppercut on the inside.
00:20:24by Tony to the chin.
00:20:26Now, does he want to languish
00:20:27on the inside like this
00:20:28where the shorter arm Tony
00:20:29can do work like that uppercut?
00:20:32I don't know.
00:20:32I think distance is better
00:20:33for Gwynn right now.
00:20:35And Tony's proving it.
00:20:37And this is the Tony
00:20:38that fights off the road
00:20:39so effectively.
00:20:42Gwynn is letting his punches
00:20:44go more frequently
00:20:45than we've seen
00:20:46in the recent past.
00:20:47He's just been so hot and cold.
00:20:50When he's hot,
00:20:51he's very good.
00:20:52But Tony seems content
00:20:54to be on the ropes here.
00:20:55And he may be playing
00:20:56a little posse.
00:20:57And he's doing good work
00:20:58off the ropes.
00:20:58He's landing those little uppercuts.
00:21:00There's a little
00:21:01clubbing right hand.
00:21:02He's been a bit more effective
00:21:03in here than Dominic Wynn has.
00:21:05Great body punch
00:21:06with the left hand
00:21:07by Tony.
00:21:08And slugging away
00:21:09with the right hand.
00:21:10This is not a posture
00:21:11for Dominic Wynn.
00:21:12He has a big height
00:21:13and reach advantage.
00:21:13He's got a good jab.
00:21:15He needs near the punch.
00:21:17Now he steps back.
00:21:19See?
00:21:20Landed a right hand.
00:21:25Tactically,
00:21:26he has allowed Tony
00:21:27to control a lot
00:21:28of this round.
00:21:31I think Tony watches
00:21:33the tapes
00:21:33because
00:21:33Gwynn is susceptible
00:21:35to uppercuts.
00:21:38You know why?
00:21:39Because he leans in.
00:21:40Watch.
00:21:40He comes in,
00:21:41has a habit
00:21:42of falling in
00:21:42after he throws.
00:21:43And that's part
00:21:44of the reason
00:21:45why the counter-rights
00:21:46and those uppercuts
00:21:46will work.
00:21:50The jab of Gwynn
00:21:52has been underused
00:21:52so far in this fight.
00:21:54And former
00:21:54Trenorati Shields
00:21:56used to bust a gut
00:21:57when urging Gwynn
00:21:58to throw more
00:21:59of that jab
00:22:00and to let his hands
00:22:00go more.
00:22:01I think there's
00:22:02a little mouse
00:22:02underneath the left eye
00:22:04of Dominic Wynn.
00:22:09I'm really surprised
00:22:10Gwynn is fighting
00:22:11so much on the inside
00:22:12against Tony.
00:22:13That doesn't feel
00:22:14right to me
00:22:15and Tony is doing
00:22:16a much better job
00:22:16in it.
00:22:17Why not use his
00:22:18height and reach
00:22:19to his advantage?
00:22:20Time!
00:22:32Nice job.
00:22:39Nice.
00:22:40On the inside.
00:22:42Rough going on the inside
00:22:44with Tony.
00:22:45Now there they both
00:22:45kind of move their head
00:22:47together and both men
00:22:49created a clash of heads.
00:22:50Now on the inside
00:22:51on the ropes
00:22:52James Toney using
00:22:53the uppercuts
00:22:53very effectively
00:22:54and counter-punching
00:22:56off those ropes
00:22:57to both the body
00:22:57and the head.
00:22:59And he's good at this.
00:22:59He's always been good at it.
00:23:01Now Gwynn steps back
00:23:03to get some punching distance
00:23:04which is where he should be
00:23:06and even though
00:23:07that right
00:23:08didn't land perfectly
00:23:08it got there
00:23:09but there's the
00:23:09counter-right hand
00:23:10by James Toney.
00:23:11Is he a master
00:23:13at throwing that punch?
00:23:14And that's a very
00:23:16key weapon for him.
00:23:18And we talked about
00:23:19Joe Goosen
00:23:19being one of the best
00:23:21trainers going today.
00:23:22How about
00:23:22Tony's trainer
00:23:24Freddie Roach
00:23:25who's built a bigger name
00:23:27as a trainer
00:23:27than he did
00:23:28as a boxer.
00:23:29One of the finest
00:23:31fiercest fighters
00:23:31never to win
00:23:33a world title.
00:23:34He's coached
00:23:34some of the biggest
00:23:34characters in the game
00:23:36including Mike Tyson.
00:23:39Tony is a character
00:23:41but not in a negative
00:23:41or self-destructive sense.
00:23:43He's more theatrical
00:23:44in a Max Baer
00:23:46sort of way.
00:23:47Good analogy.
00:23:48Good analogy.
00:23:49Yeah, maybe a little
00:23:50more harsh than that
00:23:52but yeah, you're right.
00:23:53Now then it's Gwynn
00:23:54gripping with that right hand.
00:23:56We've not seen a straight
00:23:56right too much
00:23:57from him either.
00:23:59And remember
00:24:01he talked about
00:24:02throwing lots of punches
00:24:03no matter where
00:24:03they landed.
00:24:04He's not thrown
00:24:05with that kind of
00:24:06abandon yet.
00:24:07Nice clubbing right
00:24:08by Tony.
00:24:10And I'm not sure
00:24:11to this point, Steve
00:24:12that Tony hasn't
00:24:13impressed Dominic
00:24:14Quinn with his power
00:24:15a little bit
00:24:15which is part of the
00:24:16reason why
00:24:16Quinn's a little bit
00:24:18more timid.
00:24:21Yeah, a little reluctant,
00:24:22a little reserved
00:24:23to let it go.
00:24:28Tony's such a
00:24:28different person
00:24:29now.
00:24:29He just brings
00:24:30a totally different
00:24:30mentality
00:24:31than in the past
00:24:32nights right
00:24:33as he was going
00:24:33backwards
00:24:34by Tony.
00:24:36The fascinating
00:24:36thing to me is
00:24:37you know,
00:24:38I did so many
00:24:39of James Tony's
00:24:40fights where
00:24:40he would lay
00:24:41on the ropes
00:24:41for eight,
00:24:42nine, ten rounds
00:24:42counterpuncher guy
00:24:43be almost a stationary
00:24:45kind of
00:24:45Pillsbury doughboy.
00:24:47Now, even at
00:24:48these bigger weights
00:24:49he's in the middle
00:24:49of the ring
00:24:50throwing lots
00:24:51of punches
00:24:51and that's
00:24:52fascinating to me.
00:24:53You'd think
00:24:53he would have done
00:24:53that, you know,
00:24:5440 pounds
00:24:55ago
00:24:55when he was
00:24:55lighter.
00:24:59Past the halfway
00:25:00point of round
00:25:00three.
00:25:03Well, in his
00:25:04earlier days,
00:25:05his middleweight,
00:25:05super middleweight
00:25:06days,
00:25:06he'd take
00:25:07fights off.
00:25:08I mean,
00:25:08he would just
00:25:09look totally
00:25:10lackluster.
00:25:11Conditioning was
00:25:11an issue.
00:25:12And he wondered
00:25:13if his heart
00:25:14was in.
00:25:15But today,
00:25:15I don't know
00:25:16if it's age,
00:25:16maturity,
00:25:17a sense of
00:25:17urgency or what,
00:25:18but he is all
00:25:19business.
00:25:19And you know,
00:25:20Dominic Quinn's
00:25:20not worked the
00:25:21body yet much
00:25:22in this fight
00:25:23and if you're
00:25:23going to make
00:25:24things happen
00:25:24against a 37-year-old
00:25:26who's packing
00:25:26extra weight,
00:25:27you better work
00:25:28the body early.
00:25:29Instead,
00:25:30he's allowed
00:25:30Tony on the
00:25:31inside to do
00:25:32this excellent
00:25:32work and
00:25:33languished in
00:25:33there.
00:25:34I don't know
00:25:34if that's
00:25:35for Dominic Quinn.
00:25:36I don't think
00:25:36it is.
00:25:39Quinn takes
00:25:40another step
00:25:40back.
00:25:41Don't hold.
00:25:42Throws a
00:25:43combination on
00:25:44the inside
00:25:44and then
00:25:45fights from
00:25:46close range.
00:25:48Yeah,
00:25:48you see how
00:25:49good Tony
00:25:50is.
00:25:52Yeah,
00:25:53it's very
00:25:54obvious to
00:25:55James Tony
00:25:56with those
00:25:56short arms,
00:25:57the quick
00:25:57hands on
00:25:58the inside.
00:25:58It's just
00:25:59this is his
00:25:59place to be.
00:26:03Oh,
00:26:03there's a
00:26:04wet,
00:26:05beautiful
00:26:05left hand
00:26:06by Tony
00:26:06upstairs.
00:26:08Another
00:26:08one.
00:26:09And he's
00:26:09landing.
00:26:09Why
00:26:12Dominic
00:26:13Quinn's
00:26:13not giving
00:26:13himself
00:26:14more
00:26:14punching
00:26:14room,
00:26:15I don't
00:26:15know.
00:26:21And
00:26:21Tony's
00:26:22actually
00:26:22doing
00:26:22more
00:26:23work
00:26:23to
00:26:23the
00:26:23body.
00:26:26Good
00:26:26round
00:26:26for
00:26:26James
00:26:27Tony.
00:26:27James.
00:26:31Got a
00:26:31ball.
00:26:34Look at
00:26:34him.
00:26:37Yeah,
00:26:37boy.
00:26:42There you go.
00:26:43Deep breath.
00:26:44Deep breath.
00:26:45Deep breath.
00:26:46Deep breath.
00:26:47Deep breath.
00:26:48Deep breath.
00:26:49Deep breath.
00:26:50That's lean, Justin.
00:26:51All right, James.
00:26:52Come.
00:26:53I'm going to work off those ropes.
00:26:54Nice shots.
00:26:55If you turn them out for those shots, you're going to find yourself right in a better position,
00:27:04okay?
00:27:05All right.
00:27:06It's real nice body work.
00:27:07Keep working that body work.
00:27:08Come back to head for them, okay?
00:27:09All right.
00:27:10All right.
00:27:13So here's the other brother, the promoter of James Toney, Dan Goosen.
00:27:18The brother of wins trainer, Joe Goosen.
00:27:22And I've known the Goosens for, oh, gosh, 20-some years.
00:27:26They are, there's eight brothers in the family.
00:27:28They are as competitive as they get.
00:27:30So, believe me, they want to get their job done.
00:27:32But when it's done, they'll be the closest to friends again.
00:27:35They all played roller hockey as kids.
00:27:38They were competitive then, they're competitive now.
00:27:41Their dad literally took a wall out so they'd have room to do it in the house.
00:27:45You know, this fight has been an active fight.
00:27:47And, of course, in comparison to the previous one, very much active.
00:27:51But strategically, you know, I said in the keys for Tony not to stay on the ropes.
00:27:56And that, I did that under the supposition that Gwyn would be at long range peppering him with jabs and straight right hands.
00:28:03What's happened is when Tony has retreated to the ropes, Gwyn has followed him too closely there and given Tony a chance to do this kind of stuff.
00:28:11See, Gwyn needs to step back now.
00:28:13And why he isn't, I don't know.
00:28:15So, in other words, what you're saying is your keys to victory are being fouled up because Gwyn's not doing the right thing.
00:28:21Exactly. I hate when these fighters do this.
00:28:23I hate when that happens.
00:28:24But look at how well Tony can counter when you're on the inside.
00:28:27Now, from distance, let's see if Gwyn functions better.
00:28:34Didn't you also say that Gwyn should work the body?
00:28:37Yes, and that, of course, he has not done early in this match.
00:28:41And when Tony's in this posture, he can do it.
00:28:50Now, at 37, at his highest weight, will James Tony fade a bit in this fight?
00:28:56Will he be less active as we go on?
00:28:59And that's maybe one thing that Gwyn would be hoping, but look at what James Tony's doing.
00:29:05A garage by Tony. Wait a minute, 37, that's young today in the heavyweight.
00:29:08Yeah, you're right.
00:29:09He's a whippersnapper.
00:29:10We would be young if we were in the heavyweight.
00:29:13Well, that's why they carried away.
00:29:14Maybe you would.
00:29:15I don't know.
00:29:16Tony! Tony! Tony! Tony! Tony!
00:29:19Tony! Tony! Tony! Tony! Tony!
00:29:21Tony! Tony! Tony! Tony!
00:29:23Well, he's fighting very well, and Dominic Quinn's helping him out by...
00:29:25him out by languishing on the inside like this now quinn is being somewhat active it's not he's not
00:29:33throwing some punches it's just he's doing it in a posture that isn't his forte and again nothing
00:29:39downstairs he should be ripping hooks and right hands going for the body and he can do it he's a
00:29:43very good body puncher dominic quinn he really is holding best line of the night offered up
00:29:50by jay nady the referee here all right don't touch gloves
00:30:02you know james tony's fought 12 former or current world champions in four ways division during his
00:30:07long career he's seen everything in that box is a monstrous help to him especially
00:30:13against the fight like women he's not seen that kind of competition
00:30:22you know james tony with the huge advantage of experience of course and quality of opportunity
00:30:34um i know you feel good right fine okay you feel real good
00:30:39because i'll tell you what if you get a little distance he's not going to touch you
00:30:45okay if you're going to lay on them you got to do what i tell you
00:30:48okay you've got to maneuver them you got to whip them let's not have all this work going away
00:30:54they are so close here as you see this box look at how they are right next to each other and they're
00:31:02going to stay in this box
00:31:10not much distance when they're on the inside
00:31:16and that is not working for dominic quinn
00:31:21that was better than little house on the prairie that was great
00:31:24should have drawn a ship a chimney on top i think how about that's right how about joe goosin
00:31:29first thing he said to domino quinn you feel it all right and then he said you got to give yourself
00:31:34a little distance is exactly what what you've been saying you can't win on the inside with this guy
00:31:40and he said if you're going to get on the inside the lay there you got to listen to what i'm doing
00:31:43you've got to rip shots especially to the body
00:31:49you know what james tony brings to the heavyweight division and we're seeing it even against a heavyweight
00:31:54that has some pretty good hand speed stop he punches quicker than other heavyweights and that's
00:31:58an issue i'm going to try to keep your head away from this i'm looking at james tony honestly i'm going
00:32:05back in my brain i'm still amazed he's standing there as a heavyweight fighting against these guys
00:32:10and looking good a guy who started out at 160 and has won three world titles
00:32:18in lower divisions he he did win the wba heavyweight title that was stripped of it for
00:32:23the holding the pulling steroids as you look at press row scoring
00:32:27and it's all for tony but pretty close i actually um have given them all of the rounds
00:32:34they all had it by two points
00:32:38alan hyam who was the assistant to joe goosin was telling me the other day at the press conference that
00:32:43sparring partners were lined up on home in dominant gwynn's gym
00:32:48for free to help him beat james tony which is kind of a kind of a statement
00:32:57on james but you know i i like him i like james the fighters don't seem to but well he's very
00:33:03outspoken you know and he's had his share of little tips all around but he he marches to the beat of his
00:33:09own he marches to the beat of his own drummer and he he does what he wants in life but i think a lot of
00:33:15that is shtick well the portion of it certainly good left hook by dominic quinn now oh god he's
00:33:20throwing that punch and using it somewhat effectively you're holding his arm thank you
00:33:27well that was nice james native told dominic quinn you're holding his arm and he released himself
00:33:31and then he and then he got uh james's attention with a nice right hand holding you're holding i just
00:33:38don't know if dominic quinn can win this fight on the inside and maybe he can this is fight because
00:33:43i've certainly been more active he's taking joe goosin's advice and when he is on the inside he's
00:33:47being more active now dominic quinn has never been down never been down as a pro so uh he's been hit
00:33:57by sergey lakovich and a few other big punchers so it's not like he's going to fall down from getting
00:34:02hit by a punch well this is certainly the most active he's been in a while he he was lethargic
00:34:07against a one-dimensional fighter on friday ahu nanya don't hold holding holding he did look
00:34:12good against sergey lakovich and uh as you as we said earlier monty barrett originally lost to hasim rock
00:34:20so we're going to get him we're going to get any of those shots did you feel any of those
00:34:39nothing take a couple deep breaths through your mouth through your nose i'm sorry
00:34:44okay now a little bit better you keep going to that left upper cover bring the chop right hand right
00:34:48behind it okay if you lead right hand on them you're going to get hit with that counter right
00:34:52hand okay you can't i told you what to do throw the jab faint that right and let them counter you
00:34:58then you counter with that left hook you've got to get trickier now you're going to let your hands go
00:35:02more you got to start sneaking down to the body from the outside okay you do that and we got this fight
00:35:08in the back i'll tell you what you probably got a couple rounds here he's got a couple rounds here
00:35:12i'll tell you what this is where we need to use our conditioning our conditioning do you understand
00:35:18there may be nobody better at dissecting a fight and breaking it down as a trainer than joe goosin
00:35:25yeah well and he's very calm in the corner and he's very precise and that's one of his strengths
00:35:31strengths yeah
00:35:34i guess the biggest problem here tonight for gwen although he's been more active than usual is that
00:35:38he's been fighting too much on the inside not doing the right things when he's on the inside and
00:35:43he's going up against the guy james tony who is a terrific fighter from close quarters now there's a
00:35:49double left hook from gwen it's the punch you have to throw against tony and in recent years tony's
00:35:55been hit with that punch a little bit more in the old days it was still hard to even hit him with that
00:35:59that was the best sequence of the night for a gwen but again here's gwen languishing on the inside look
00:36:03at the jack back see that when he's got some distance that can work so let's let's make no
00:36:09mistakes from the outside tony's been pretty good as well hold him hold him thank you
00:36:16and tony's such a precise body puncher and he prefers a guy coming at him
00:36:22yeah he can counterpunt absolutely and gwen's uh answering
00:36:26he's on the ropes he's just good at this he's been good at it for 15 years or more
00:36:46we said he's the consummate pro you just always see he's so intelligent so crafty
00:36:52he just doesn't leave shots to the head and to the body by tony and this is a posture for dominic
00:36:58win it's not the place where he normally would be he can fight on the inside some but
00:37:04much more effective on the outside using his height and reach
00:37:10so tony really picking up the pace here has the higher work rate and his punches are accurate
00:37:16that was low donald he doesn't waste his punches i'll say that he's economical
00:37:23see gwen's laying on him but not doing it and it's always tony that's able to get something done
00:37:29at this junction the uppercuts the chopping right hands and the same punches are landing over and over
00:37:34again you gotta wonder if this is wearing gwen out for the later rounds i mean he's got tony's got some
00:37:39heavy hands and he's using them right here two overhand rights normally if you would smother a
00:37:46fighter like this it would work to your benefit but not when it's james tony he's so adept at
00:37:51fighting off those ropes they've got underrated hand speed oh and especially in the heavyweight
00:37:56division where he's certainly the quicker of most of the fighters he's going to face and that's what
00:38:01makes a a possible matchup with burke he's winning and remember freddie wrote said that the other
00:38:06day no no work with weights for this fight he said your attribute is hand speed now there's a little
00:38:11blood from the mouth for james tony now but he's still he's getting him in left uppercut nailing him
00:38:20with everything what punch hasn't james tony thrown it's been a variety of shots on his entire arsenal
00:38:32in the evening
00:38:40oh shoot
00:38:49what dominic win needs to do is get these left hooks in now they weren't fantastic punches but they were
00:38:57and they push James Toney back but when they're in this posture James Toney has better hand speed
00:39:04he's a more skilled inside fighter and he will come at you with a variety of different punches
00:39:11above the body and the head and whether Gwyn shakes his head or not that it hurt him the
00:39:15fact is Toney is landing repeatedly with these shots and has been very very effective on the
00:39:20inside you picked up on the blood it it appears as if Tony is bleeding in the mouth and we begin
00:39:33round seven it's scheduled for 12 for a fringe heavyweight title currently owned by Tony but
00:39:40he wants the real one now Tony using his jab and it's used that punch for the most part we may
00:39:49realize at the end of this fight that James Toney's thrown as many or more jabs and Dominic
00:39:53Quinn and that's not a good sign for Gwyn oh beautiful double left hook on the inside by
00:39:57Gwyn exactly what he needs more he's gonna languish on the inside he's got a ripped left hook to the
00:40:03body in the head to James Toney it's the only way to beat him on the inside so the left hook
00:40:09has been the best weapon of Gwyn he's got tools but it's his temperament that's been a question
00:40:18the time's just too laid-back
00:40:22come on and it's probably more mental than physical with Dominic now he says he's been sparring up to
00:40:29some on some days up to 14 rounds Joe goose oh double left oh and a right uppercut by Tony Joe
00:40:36goose and a trainer who one of his strengths is conditioning his fighters they are always in
00:40:41great condition and that was one of the areas that Gwyn was lacking in yep and one of the reasons
00:40:46Corrales had such success back in May precisely James Toney a moment ago through a right to the
00:40:51body in the right uppercut a combination not too many fighters throw and you see everybody all three
00:40:57of the press row scores going for James Toney and I also have James Toney ahead in this fight this is
00:41:03really a huge fight for Gwyn victory he's back in the mix a loss and he goes to the back of the line
00:41:10in a wide open heavyweight division I mean it's it's there for the call now this has been a little
00:41:16bit better round for Dominic Quinn and look at it if he uses that left hand continually on the inside
00:41:22he's able to make some things happen Tony really scoring with that uppercut there's a slapping right
00:41:28right hand that connected by Tony to the chin in the left hook followed by a right all Tony Tony
00:41:40having success fighting off the ropes we're missing with the right a chopping right but a grazing glancing blow
00:41:48had no effect whatsoever on Tony
00:41:54just continues to come into Tony's office and he is paying the price holding you're holding now this
00:42:13round Gwyn has been more active but is he winning the right I don't know I don't think so I don't think so
00:42:18either I just think Tony is landing more punches and effective
00:42:35this fight and the story of this fight has been the distance or lack of distance
00:42:42between the two fighters and on the inside James Tony especially fighting off throws is able to land a
00:42:47variety of punches like that left hook you just saw left hooks uppercuts body punches that's an
00:42:53impressive array of punches James Tony is landing this is a place where he is very accustomed to
00:43:00fighting and he throws creative combinations the right to the body and right to the head not too many
00:43:05fighters will throw that and you see the hand speed of James Tony during this montage this has been a
00:43:13fight fought it's close quarters with Tony on the ropes it's not a good recipe for success for Dominic
00:43:18quick
00:43:25every round
00:43:27as we go into round 8 scheduled for 12
00:43:33James Tony clearly in the lead
00:43:39but Dominic looking better than he has in the last few fights and it and facing even better
00:43:49competition although certainly a lot of it certainly a good fighter when he faced him but you know he's in
00:43:54against arguably one of the one or two or three best heavyweights out there something right here
00:44:00oh look at the uppercuts by Tony and I was talking to Joe Cousin in the corner and of course they know each other very well
00:44:07um
00:44:08well you know what obviously the heavyweight division needs to be livened up and uh
00:44:12this may be the guy to do it James Tony
00:44:15he's certainly not shrinking violently
00:44:17although his trunks are not shrinking but violent
00:44:22you can see that James Tony much more experienced and of course a great deal of success after the seventh round
00:44:31so many of his fights have gone to distance and obviously for the most part he's been very successful
00:44:36when Gwyn has underachieved his goal in a couple of those 12 roundies
00:44:39well now Tony is being a showman landing a right hand and then looking away
00:44:44remember the Holy Bill fight he kept looking at the judge
00:44:47the judge wanted to make sure the judge saw that punch
00:44:52not content to leave the commentary to us
00:44:55exactly
00:44:56he's performed very well
00:44:58the only thing Dominic Quinn can take solace from maybe
00:45:01and I'm saying maybe of course
00:45:03is that the work rate of Tony will slow because of his age
00:45:07because of the extra weight but he shows no sign of it
00:45:10and you have to think he won't
00:45:12and just popping punches off Gwyn's head
00:45:14perhaps that's one thing in the back of Gwyn's mind to get this fight as deep as possible
00:45:19and I hope that condition and age will take its course against Tony
00:45:24the problem is that Dominic Quinn even in this posture isn't ripping the body of Tony
00:45:28he's not really making him pay
00:45:31and so you know there's not a lot of reason to think Tony will slow down
00:45:35family members of James Tony emblazoned on his clubs
00:45:39I think Dominic Quinn has chosen strategically the wrong approach
00:45:46he's on the inside and it's negated his jab in his straight right hand
00:45:50that could help set up a better left hook
00:45:52instead he's fighting Tony's fight he really is
00:45:54and Joe Goosen is telling him that I mean he's instructing him the correct way
00:46:02it's just gonna sink in better
00:46:04he has right hand by Tony upstairs
00:46:06they want more distance and Gwyn just isn't giving it to him
00:46:10and it's Gwyn's choice he's making a choice here
00:46:13but part of that is even at long range you can see James Tony's effective with his jab
00:46:19and some of the other combinations he's struck
00:46:27and Dominic Quinn is playing Tony's game and he just stares him down
00:46:32well he touched gloves with the ref
00:46:37nice night
00:46:39beautiful
00:46:44beautiful
00:46:50deep blood
00:46:51James Tony is an intriguing individual
00:46:53make no mistake about that
00:46:54first of all he's a talented fighter
00:46:56he shows that at the beginning
00:46:58now he's talking to the crowd
00:47:00and then while he's talking to the folks at ringside
00:47:03he decides I'm gonna throw a combination
00:47:06and uh
00:47:07and land
00:47:08and uh
00:47:09you know
00:47:10there are not too many people that can do this
00:47:11he's chatting
00:47:12and Dominic Quinn's not making him pay
00:47:14and then Tony ripped shots on the inside
00:47:16that's a nice combination
00:47:18and takes time to
00:47:19look at Regene 80
00:47:21looking for a comment perhaps
00:47:23and he shook his hand
00:47:25still talking
00:47:27he is a showman
00:47:28little wink
00:47:29and he's ready to continue
00:47:30round nine
00:47:31comes running out
00:47:32from the corner
00:47:33explain to me
00:47:36as they will look at the tape and the gloves
00:47:38how James Tony can be at his all time high weight
00:47:41no coaching please
00:47:42yeah
00:47:43230
00:47:44be a heavyweight
00:47:45and be more active
00:47:46now part of it is
00:47:47no injuries
00:47:48you know he's feeling okay about himself
00:47:49but
00:47:50you look at him
00:47:51that's an active guy
00:47:52who's weighing more than he's ever weighed
00:47:54seven years older
00:47:55seven years older
00:47:56his opponent
00:47:57and he's the guy that's more active
00:47:58wait a minute
00:47:59maybe he's uh
00:48:00thank you
00:48:01really is 27
00:48:02he told you in the interview
00:48:03he's 27
00:48:04high man
00:48:05you're right
00:48:06let's take a look at that birth certificate
00:48:07he is found
00:48:08the fountain of youth
00:48:09just a very nice effort by James Tony
00:48:12it really is
00:48:13and you know what makes it even better
00:48:14it's fashion
00:48:15on the inside
00:48:16when Gwynn
00:48:17does that
00:48:18and it's fashion in the center of the ring
00:48:19with jabs
00:48:20body shots
00:48:21and uppercuts
00:48:22just brimming with confidence right now
00:48:24Al
00:48:25he's flicking that jab
00:48:27and Dominic Quinn is falling into that
00:48:30I'm not gonna punch too much
00:48:32syndrome that he's gotten in before
00:48:34that right hand they've shook Dominic Quinn
00:48:36and now he throws a whole mess of punches
00:48:39and he's yelling something
00:48:40how about
00:48:41somebody in the crowd
00:48:42for the first time we saw Dominic Quinn hold on
00:48:45and that's a sign
00:48:47here it is again
00:48:49you're grabbing
00:48:50you're grabbing
00:48:51you're holding
00:48:52he says stop holding
00:48:53stop
00:48:54you're right
00:48:55we haven't seen that many of
00:48:57many clinches
00:49:01very disappointing at this moment for Dominic Quinn
00:49:04he's won two and one in his last three fights
00:49:07he had been
00:49:09you know a heavyweight prospect that everybody thought
00:49:12had the potential to move way up in the heavyweight rankings
00:49:15and the last couple years have not gone well for him
00:49:18well he was a hot prospect early on
00:49:20he beat Michael Grant
00:49:21in spectacular fashion
00:49:23big guy
00:49:24he beat Duncan Tokowari
00:49:26also a big guy
00:49:27big guy
00:49:28and then just the about face
00:49:29the Monte Barrett
00:49:30look at Tony go to work here
00:49:32that's superb boxing
00:49:34I mean good combinations
00:49:38this is what separates Tony from the other heavyweight
00:49:41he is a very very skilled fighter
00:49:44oh
00:49:46stop
00:49:47stop
00:49:48well he's certainly winning this crowd over
00:49:49very popular
00:49:50as Tony continues to lead
00:49:54on the press row scorecards
00:49:56surprised that Charles Presnell's scorecard
00:49:59only a two-point margin for Tony
00:50:01that's a little surprising to me
00:50:02good body shot
00:50:03you know we talked about Gwyn wanting to work the body to slow Tony down for the later rounds
00:50:08he wasn't able to do it
00:50:09instead it's been Tony who's been very effective to the body
00:50:13who do you think the average person off the street considers the heavyweight champion of the world
00:50:18wow that's a tough question
00:50:20the linear one if you will is Vitelli Klitschko
00:50:23you're holding
00:50:24and maybe within the boxing circles
00:50:27more people than not might think of him
00:50:29but the average person I don't know
00:50:31it's not Joe Lewis is it?
00:50:33no
00:50:34ok
00:50:35or Lennox Lewis for that matter
00:50:37what's the solution
00:50:38is it an activity amongst the top guns?
00:50:40yeah I think in this division
00:50:42good right hand by Tony
00:50:44in this division
00:50:45the match-ups mean everything now
00:50:48and we're looking at a guy right here who you could match with almost anybody
00:50:51and make a very interesting fight right now
00:50:53and that of course is James Tony
00:50:54but do the promoters and the politics of the court have to stay out of the way
00:50:58to let that happen
00:50:59and they have in most of the other weight divisions
00:51:01right
00:51:07interested spectator fought earlier tonight
00:51:10Chris Burr the IBF heavyweight champ who defeated Deverell Williamson by unanimous decision
00:51:16again hearing the boomers from the crowd as the fans see his image on the book screen
00:51:28James
00:51:29encouraging words from Freddie Roach to James Tony
00:51:58what else is there for him to say he's doing everything right
00:52:02you know I understand the fans booing Chris Burr
00:52:05I understand they didn't like the effort
00:52:06I just feel bad because he's such a quality guy
00:52:08and you feel bad he has to endure that
00:52:10but the performance of that fight created that
00:52:13he is and so was his opponent Deverell Williamson
00:52:16yeah
00:52:17a very quality individual
00:52:18and you kind of feel bad for them
00:52:20that lackluster fight for Chris
00:52:22we're holding
00:52:27on
00:52:28let go
00:52:29let go
00:52:30let go
00:52:31let go
00:52:32let go
00:52:33let go
00:52:34let go
00:52:35let go
00:52:36let go
00:52:37so round 10 continues
00:52:44the you know james tony in this fight interestingly has as we mentioned before
00:52:49has shown us two different dimensions and it's very impressive especially in the heavyweight
00:52:55division because he's fought off the ropes he's counter punched and then in the center of the
00:52:59ring he's been very very effective with his jab against a fighter who has a height and reach
00:53:05advantage over him so as we've said those two dimensions very impressive for james tony
00:53:16tony continues to look at the
00:53:26and it's been it's been a textbook effort you know freddie works had nothing to say to james tony
00:53:31in between other than you're fighting a great fight and uh it's rare that a trainer has only
00:53:35that to say to a fighter and for dominic win part of the problem is now he's in the later rounds a
00:53:42place he hasn't always excelled in against the 37 year old who just isn't stopping he's continuing
00:53:49to punch and continuing to do exactly what he needed to do if there was a statement to be made
00:53:54here james tony's really making it with this performance he said i'm healthy for the first
00:53:58time i'm ready to you know since the holyfield fight to great extent and he's shown it and apparently
00:54:03what you time out hang on one second
00:54:08problem with the tape on the right side of dominic win and and the thing is it doesn't seem to matter as
00:54:14far as the no talking the spare tire thank you around the tony's midsection he still seems to be
00:54:21in very good condition as you pointed out he's 100 he seems very healthy which is our contributing
00:54:27factors to his performance here tonight okay you know let's make no mistake about it dominic winn
00:54:34is has reached the status of kind of a fringe heavyweight but a fringe heavyweight with a lot of
00:54:40of the goalie who has who has had his excellent moments big right hand there by tony to the head
00:54:46of gwynn no knockdowns in this fight as al pointed out gwynn's never been down tony's been down a couple
00:54:54of times in his career so this is what you like you like to see a heavyweight in round 10 throwing combinations
00:55:03and there aren't too many that do that on a regular basis very very few you know one that did even
00:55:09though he's not it may be the great fighter we enjoyed owen back when he was on this network
00:55:13fighting and throwing a lot of combinations what the heck
00:55:20so we head to the final seconds of round 10 another impressive one for james tony against dominic
00:55:33next saturday will be the rematch of the fight many are calling the fight of the decade this is one
00:55:37you don't want to miss on october 8th it's the rematch of the greatest lightweight fight ever
00:55:44diego corrales versus jose luis castillo their first bout was an epic war the fight of the millennium
00:55:51what a combination by corrales one of the greatest fights of all time unbelievable action can you handle
00:55:58it again corrales versus castillo two plus more saturday october 8th live on pay-per-view contact your
00:56:04pay-per-view provider to order where would you be when history repeats itself
00:56:13i cannot wait for that fight a week from tonight it's not only that fight but it's a really excellent
00:56:18card oh fantastic corje arce and hussein hussein in a rematch of what was a fight that was well it
00:56:26wasn't fought on the same level as corrales and castillo was terrific so that card is going to be
00:56:30fantastic and anybody who's a boxing fan just has to be looking forward to it so much a week from
00:56:35tonight on showtime pay-per-view the rematch between diego corrales and jose luis castillo a rematch of
00:56:42one of the great fights that you'll ever see round 11 championship rounds and james tony has put on a
00:56:51nice show here tonight he sure has and one of the there have been many elements to this that he can take
00:56:56away and be happy about the fact that he's fought in the center he's fought off the ropes he's used a
00:57:02complete arsenal of punches and he has never slowed down and that's a very important point because
00:57:07when you're 37 coming off a couple of injuries you're weighing more than you've ever weighed people
00:57:12are going to ask those questions he's answered them you know he's different than all other fighters you
00:57:17can't go by uh the normal signs with him you really can't
00:57:23different is the operative word here's a look at the championship rounds he's he's got the experience
00:57:28doesn't he how about that 18 to zip things went south on dominic quinn about the third or fourth round
00:57:36when he started languishing on the inside with tony took a lot of punishment never quite got his game plan
00:57:42going i mean there's just nobody better using the angles turning his body rolling his shoulders
00:57:49shifting side stepping that's james tony he's cute in that he turns his shoulder he blocks punches
00:57:56shoots the counter and the other thing we've learned about james tony as a heavyweight
00:58:01is that he has a very good chip um you know holyfield hit him with some pretty good shots uh even john
00:58:08ruiz who has knocked down some heavyweights even though he's not a monstrous puncher hit him with some good
00:58:12shot tony's not been effective there's a scoring you see a wide margin uh impressora scoring for
00:58:17james tony and i agree with it i i have a very big margin for james tony so i agree with that so tony
00:58:24takes a punch well and one of the interesting things for chris bird is he's looking at this
00:58:28is he should be the next tony opponent or put his title on the line against tony tony's not only active
00:58:33he's hard to hurt and based upon chris bird not being as sharp as he would like that's a tough
00:58:39combination for bird right now and gwinn's put himself in a position right now uh hour he needs
00:58:44a knockout to win and guess what james tony's never been stopped never knocked out never really hurt in
00:58:50a fight i guess the worst he looked was against roy jones back in 1994 he lost by unanimous decision
00:58:57at 168 had a very hard time making that weight as he often did during those times
00:59:04partially his own doing of course also he was a different guy back then mentally and physically
00:59:11you mentioned maturity that's a key point for james tony some might never put those two words in the same
00:59:16sentence but really they'd be wrong because he he is matured in many different ways about this sport
00:59:22three-time world champion in three different weight divisions
00:59:28looking for the heavyweight title someday and it could come soon
00:59:36okay give me another drink james
00:59:52okay deep breath son come on give me going one more second
00:59:59okay okay this guy's got one shot he's gonna come after you
01:00:06all right you fight your fight okay all right keep those combinations
01:00:12keep your head good good head movement okay all right beautiful okay
01:00:17and do it it's not too late but you know what you got three minutes left
01:00:28now this is it james tony freddy wrote they know that dominic
01:00:33quinn has only one shot at winning this fight and that's by knocking out james tony
01:00:37well they didn't touch gloves at the start they do at the end and you know freddy roach
01:00:41understands his fighter there was one only one important thing for him to say
01:00:46remember to move your head because he doesn't want james tony getting caught with something
01:00:51that maybe maybe would hurt him or put him down you know there was just one major important thing to say
01:00:56to him and that was it so he did and he knows james tony will listen i think the consensus is that next
01:01:03month vitale klitschko is going to uh beat hasim rochman and most people recognize
01:01:09vitale klitschko as as the man how do you think tony would do well you know see i believe that the
01:01:16big tall heavyweights who fight tall and pichco does it better than anyone present the biggest
01:01:21challenge to tony just getting to them is hard for him that's his problem how does he hit them
01:01:26uh big in the press row scoring and and you know that's the problem for tony any of the shorter
01:01:33heavyweights i say he has a great chance to beat and i would make him the favorite which goes the only
01:01:39one that's top okay not to say he won't beat him because i'm never going to underestimate this guy
01:01:46he's doing some amazing things difficult to underestimate tony yeah it's just that that's a tougher fight for him
01:01:56he continues to have his way with the younger dominic win you know james tony's been at four
01:02:03different weight divisions i thought he was at his best as a crucial but i'll tell you what he's
01:02:09fighting very well as a heavyweight too undefeated yeah
01:02:16right hand over the top by tony just rolling away and you know dominic win it looks like we'll get
01:02:23through this fight with still not having a knockdown though he's been hit with some very very big and
01:02:28good shots by james tony but that's a small moral victory for win 17-year pro james lights out tony
01:02:37final minute of the 12th round
01:02:42tony back in action eagerly awaited return to the ring after being out six spots after beating john
01:02:48ruiz and then having the title strip because of the uh the positive test for steroids
01:02:57two years ago when james tony moved into the heavyweight division with that stirring performance
01:03:02over evander holeyfield he thought he would be active the wins would be fought every four or five
01:03:08months of people like dominic win it didn't work out that way because of the injuries but you can feel
01:03:14when he's 100 the zeal he has for fighting and for the sport but if he can stay healthy he'll be a
01:03:21force make no mistake about it in this division it's only he were about 10 years younger yeah he can
01:03:26really dominate for years to come and that's it i heard a bell didn't you all right right right
01:03:34over about eight seconds more i don't think jay nady heard the bell for some reason and that's it
01:03:42this one in the box and the fans get an opportunity to stand and applaud which is obviously something
01:03:50they couldn't do in the first fight a lot of activity in this fight even though dominic
01:03:55win didn't do the the kind of performance he wanted he was active didn't try did try
01:04:05well they kept going it extended past the uh final bell check this out
01:04:23it's been over for a while nobody told us well that's more of what james tony is all about just
01:04:31keeps on fighting he's got a lot of fight left in him doesn't he really a superb performance by
01:04:36james tony on every level and and even though there might have been some failings with quinn this man
01:04:41performed well able to get back on track following all the controversy after the john ruiz fight back
01:04:49in april a disappointed look on the face of dominic win total uh opposite for james tony was able to let
01:04:57out a nice smile takes care of business against the unrated dominic win just as he was expected to do
01:05:05but a uh a dominating performance and i know once again sets his sights on the big prize
01:05:15the heavyweight title
01:05:18and i think more than anything it was the nature of the performance of james tony that made this even
01:05:23a more special victory all right let's get the word from uh our ring announcer jimmy lennon jude
01:05:31ladies and gentlemen after 12 rounds of action the judges are in agreement we have a unanimous
01:05:38decision judge at ringside keith mcdonald scores about 117 to 111 judges dolby shirley and paul
01:05:48smith both scores about 119 to 109 all three in favor of the winner and still the iba heavyweight
01:05:59champion james lights out tony well lights out lights up this crowd here at the reno event center
01:06:11they love him his promoter dan uh goosin and uh in some ways i guess a little bittersweet his brother
01:06:22has to lose as the trainer for uh dominic win but he's happy as his man wins so tony lifts his record
01:06:31to 69 4 and 2 with the one no contest unbeaten his last 16. win slips to 25 three and one let's go up to
01:06:38the ring and jim gray jim deep block detroit all right james james congratulations tonight what's
01:06:45cracking baby hey did you benefit quite a bit that he elected to fight you on the inside oh i love that
01:06:50you know that's that's what i love to do that's down and dirty jim gray what's happening were you
01:06:54surprised that he didn't try and use his sizing back up and and you were able to control the fight
01:06:58the entire night well you know if he's trying if he's gonna try to run to run the stick move tactics
01:07:02you know everybody don't think i can i can do it i can do a movement i like that give me it's like a chase
01:07:06like a cat like a cat mouse game so i'm ready for anything you know i'm a little rusty because i've
01:07:11only this is only my third fight in the last four years i've been sidelined with injuries people
01:07:15write me off but you know what now i'm healthy this is my first fight i'm really healthy but i need
01:07:19i gotta fight again i'm gonna fight again next month what are you gonna fight next month i don't
01:07:23care but i might fight you well that'll be a pretty easy payday and i don't think many would pay to
01:07:28is it simply a matter of health for you james because tonight it was a very good performance and we've
01:07:32seen you perform well when you have been healthy well i give myself a b minus because like i said
01:07:37i've been rusty my weight kind of high b minus what didn't you like well my weight was a little heavy
01:07:41my movement was great my right hand was a little sloppy but you know like i said it comes with my
01:07:46timing i stay more active i get a lot better did you watch the first fight with chris bird come on
01:07:52jim i fell asleep i mean so did most of us so would you want to fight him now or would you elect to go
01:07:58in the direction of the klitschko rockman winner well i don't fight anybody klitschko the klitschko
01:08:04brothers rockman brewster bird i'm the man y'all got to come see me to make some money that's the
01:08:11bottom line right there if you had your choice what would the order be oh klitschko because y'all
01:08:15think he's the best and do you think he's the best no i'm the best i mean the best of your
01:08:20opponents who uh of an opponent out there i think rockman's a little bit better but you know what
01:08:23time is here i'm ready for anybody i'm coming i'm the man in the heavyweight division if y'all
01:08:29want to get the belt y'all come see me i'd be james congratulations yeah yeah let's go back to you
01:08:37steve all right jim thanks for i'm going to go out on a limb here and and say that james tony's in a
01:08:42pretty good mood he certainly is interesting uh evaluation of b minus of his performance and i
01:08:47like hearing him say he'd like to get his weight down a little bit it would help him because it's all
01:08:50about speed for him that was an excellent performance and one of the things that made
01:08:54it excellent we saw a heavyweight throw combinations and be active throughout a fight so will we see the
01:09:01two guys from michigan tony and bird who've been at each other's throats for years early next year
01:09:07or maybe tony versus vladimir klitschko will have to wait and see let's check out the scoring
01:09:12for tony versus gwen the official judges saw it this way keith mcdonald had tony up by six
01:09:17dalby shirley had tony winning by 10 points and paul smith the same 119 to 109 so a convincing
01:09:24victory for james tony without question and let's take a look at the press row scorers
01:09:30tim dalberg from the ap had tony winning 118 to 110 mike hauser from the ring magazine 119 109
01:09:38and charles presnell from boxingtalk.com 117 111 for this man james lights out
01:09:45tony final comments well i'd like to see james tony in against any of the heavyweight champions
01:09:50a chris bird fight would be intriguing layman brewster would be fascinating and i'd like to see
01:09:54him get stay active as he said even if there's a fight in between gets his weight down this guy's a
01:10:00force in the heavyweight division and maybe the best technician in the division at the age of 37 years
01:10:07young as we wind things down from reno nevada let's take a final look at tonight's results
01:10:13in our co-feature a yawner chris bird came back from the 11-month layoff retained his ibf heavyweight
01:10:19title at the expense of 37 year old davaro williamson a fight that was booed by the fans for most of the
01:10:25night for being lackluster and in our main event as you just saw james tony jumped back to his winning
01:10:31ways after the mess with john ruiz able to turn away dominic win tony now looking for bigger and
01:10:36better things as he focuses in on another heavyweight title opportunity
01:10:43remember one week from tonight where will you be when history is made for the second time in five
01:10:49months showtime pay-per-view presents the rematch of the fight of the decade corrales versus castillo
