00:05And now, the HBO Sports presentation, Boxing After Dark.
00:11The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
00:41HBO Sports.
01:11And now, the HBO Sports.
01:41Tonight, a boxing doubleheader.
01:43First up, number one-ranked contender Andrew Lewis and former title holder James Page challenged for a vacant 147-pound title.
01:52Then, a fiery matchup as featherweight title holder Guti Espadas defends his championship, or his version of it, against the undefeated Eric El Terrible Morales.
02:02When it comes to boxing, fight fans know to expect the unexpected.
02:07Tonight, no difference, especially with two tough fighters from Mexico swearing off against one another.
02:12Tijuana's Eric Morales moving into the 126-pound division to take on a reigning title holder there.
02:18And his name is Guti Espadas at Merida, outside Mexico City.
02:23We expect to see fireworks before a knowledgeable boxing crowd here at the MGM Grand.
02:30Welcome back to Boxing After Dark.
02:33Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
02:34We welcome you to this edition of Boxing After Dark.
02:37And both fights here point the way toward bigger business in the two divisions we'll be showcasing.
02:43At 147 pounds, James Page has labored in the shadow of better-known fighters like Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya.
02:51He's been very inactive in the last couple of years.
02:53Tonight, he fights a big fight against Andrew Sixthead Lewis, the winner hoping to look down the road toward a possible matchup with Mosley,
03:02generally regarded as the king of that division.
03:04At 126 pounds, Eric Morales, moving up from his former title-holding capacity at 122,
03:11looks to get past Guti Espadas tonight, secure a title belt, and begin to build leverage toward a possible matchup
03:18with the winner of the April 7 fight coming up between Marco Antonio Barrera and Prince Nassim Hamed.
03:25And as we get ready for that one and get ready to see those two fighters in the main event,
03:29we have the good fortune once again to be working with the legendary trainer and manager,
03:33Boxing After Dark expert, Emmanuel Stewart.
03:36Emmanuel, your identity here as the co-trainer of Prince Nassim Hamed once again comes into play.
03:42A couple months ago, you were made a little bit nervous watching Marco Antonio Barrera look terrific
03:47against a presentable opponent named Jesus Salud,
03:50looking ahead to Barrera's matchup with your guy, Prince Nassim, on April 7.
03:54Now, let's just presume for a second, and in the main event tonight, Morales can get past Espadas
03:59and look ahead toward a possible fight with the Prince if Prince can beat Barrera.
04:03What do you think of Morales as a potential opponent for Prince Nassim?
04:08I think Morales is a very tough opponent for anybody,
04:10in particular fighting at this new weight of 126 pounds.
04:13I think he's extremely strong, and I like the fact that he sets the pace in the bear ring.
04:18He goes after the guy, he sets the tempo, he doesn't wait to react to what you do.
04:21And he's been very busy, and he's been fighting quality fighters.
04:24He's a big threat for anybody in the featherweight division.
04:27All right, well, we'll look forward to seeing that later on.
04:30Morales is the bell cow here tonight, much of the crowd having come in from Morales' hometown of Tijuana.
04:36But before we see Morales and Espadas, we'll be seeing the welterweight showcase
04:40between Andrew Six-Heads Lewis and James Page.
04:44For more on that, let's turn to HBO Boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
04:46Larry, since Page won a tumultuous battle in 1999 against Jose Luis Lopez,
04:52he's only fought twice, only once in the last year and a half.
04:57And now he comes into the fight against the relatively unknown but unbeaten Lewis as,
05:01shockingly to some of us, an underdog.
05:04What up?
05:05Jim, James Page has a reputation as one of those talented fighters
05:10who can only be beaten by himself.
05:14And Andrew Lewis, who can fight, just may help him do so.
05:19To give you an idea about how unusual Page is,
05:23he tells us that as a fifth grader,
05:25he finished second in a national spelling bee competition.
05:29In boxing, there are guys who couldn't spell jab if you spotted them the J or the B.
05:38But Page can spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
05:43In a career of promising starts and sudden stops,
05:47he's had problems with alcohol, problems with D-O-N-K-I-N-G,
05:53and he did a stretch in San Quentin for financial problems that he's had.
06:01No, Jim, he did not get a presidential pardon, but he can punch.
06:07Couldn't make that long list, huh?
06:08Maybe he wasn't rich enough.
06:10Well, James Page, because of political problems with his manager Carl King
06:16and promoter Don King,
06:17twice backed out of fights with Andrew Sixhead Lewis last year.
06:21He even gave up his WBA welterweight title to do so.
06:25So now Page earns the unusual distinction of becoming the first fighter we've seen
06:29to fight for a title that he vacated.
06:33And Lewis...
06:34Here's the tale of the tape.
06:35You see Page is one year younger at 29.
06:38They've both been around a little bit.
06:39Three-inch height advantage for Page, one and a half inches in reach.
06:42They weighed in at 147 and 146.
06:45Both have put on about 10 pounds since having weighed in more than 24 hours ago.
06:51Rules of the bout, whether unofficial ringside scorer Harold Letterman.
06:54The James Page, Andrew Sixhead Lewis fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
06:59using the unified rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
07:03There is no standing eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
07:06Only the referee can stop the fight,
07:08and you cannot be saved by the bell at any round,
07:11including the 12th and final round.
07:14Jim.
07:14All right.
07:15Thank you very much, Harold.
07:16Politically troubled, but big trouble for his opponents,
07:19particularly with the left hook, a closer look at James Page.
07:25As part of his separation or attempted separation from Don King,
07:31James Page had to fire his mother,
07:34who was listed as his co-manager in that deal,
07:37a way of keeping him under King's tutelage.
07:43At the same time, he has been helped through all of this
07:46by the controversial rap promoter James Prince,
07:49who is best known for helping Floyd Mayweather split from his father.
07:56And those postponements enriched him,
08:00because he has been offered a little over $100,000 for this fight previously.
08:05Tonight, he will make twice that.
08:08Across the ring from him, Andrew Sixheads Lewis.
08:11How did he get the nickname?
08:13In an amateur fight, he hit his opponent so hard
08:16that the opponent reputedly said to the referee,
08:18I see six blurry heads in front of me.
08:21Andrew has been called Sixheads, or six, ever since, Larry.
08:25And here's a look at Sixheads.
08:31He is in the family business.
08:33His father was a professional fighter
08:34who reportedly once sparred with Sugar Ray Robinson,
08:37and he has no less than five cousins who are professional fighters.
08:42He has a connection to Brooklyn, along with Raoul Frank,
08:46another welterweight who is in line to fight
08:48for a vacant welterweight title.
08:51And his big dream is to get out of the ghetto
08:55and with this $200,000 purse to purchase his own home.
09:01Tonight, he tries to become the first ever
09:03from the tiny nation of Guyana
09:05to win a championship belt in boxing.

10:04And when the bell rings,
10:05your referee in charge of the action,
10:07Kenny Bayless.
10:09And now, ladies and gentlemen,
10:1012 rounds of boxing for the vacant
10:12WBA Welderweight Championship of the World.
10:21Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
10:24wearing white with red and blue,
10:26and weighing in at 147 pounds.
10:29His professional record, 19 victories without a loss,
10:33with one draw,
10:35and 18 of those 19 wins are by knockout.
10:39Ladies and gentlemen, Brooklyn's in the house.
10:42From Brooklyn, New York,
10:43here is the undefeated WBA,
10:46number one ranked welterweight in the world,
10:49Andrew Sixthes-Lewis.
10:57And his opponent across the ring,
11:00fighting out of the red corner,
11:02weighing in at 146 pounds.
11:04He's wearing silver, trend with blue,
11:06his professional record.
11:0825 victories, including 19 knockouts,
11:11with only three losses,
11:13and a world title.
11:15Tonight, he looks to regain that title,
11:16and comes to us from Pittsburgh, California,
11:19presenting the former WBA
11:21Worldweight Champion of the World,
11:25James, the mighty Quinn Payne!
11:30Let's fight! Let's fight!
11:32Number one! Number one!
11:34Come on, get everyone out there.
11:36Everybody else back, man out there.
11:38Okay, anybody want to go out or I'll keep it.
11:46I want to caution, obey my commands at all times.
11:52Above all, keep the fight clean at all times.
11:54Good luck to both of you. Touch gloves.
11:58This is another match between a speed fighter,
12:04Lewis,
12:04and a puncher,
12:08Page.
12:08We saw what happened the last time
12:10between Mayweather and Corrales.
12:15You know, going in this fight, though,
12:16it's interesting that Lewis also is a good puncher himself,
12:20and he punches with both hands,
12:21where primarily,
12:22Page is mainly dangerous with his left hook.
12:24So it's going to be much easier for Lewis
12:26to prepare for the counter his left hook
12:28than it's going to be for Page to look out for Lewis,
12:31because Lewis punches good with both hands,
12:33and from a southpaw stance.
12:35The cautionary note there is that
12:37Page's left hook is no ordinary left hook.
12:41It's a pretty doggone good left hook.
12:43So he can change the fight by landing one of them,
12:46depending on how well Lewis takes the punch.
12:49But it looks like he's too slow.
12:50The speed is going to be a bigger factor.
12:51He's already landed two solid left hooks
12:54of Lewis from his southpaw stance.
12:56Page is too slow,
12:57and this fight's going to be able to go quickly.
12:59So you like Andrew Six Hats Lewis
13:01to go through him with his speed, huh, Manny?
13:03Speed is a big factor. It's too slow.
13:05And James Page is rusty,
13:07not having been in the ring in nearly two years.
13:12Well, Six Hats getting off to a very staffed
13:15fast start in round one.
13:17Yeah.
13:17The speed he's showing is with his hands
13:20rather than with his quickness as a boxer.
13:23He's just beating, beating Page to death.
13:27And even the thing about it,
13:28when Page misses a punch,
13:30I look at the balance,
13:31and that lets you know that something is wrong.
13:33If he misses the punch,
13:34he loses his balance almost completely.
13:36Page land on the left hand.
13:38Lewis squares up his shoulders,
13:40goes into a conventional stance.
13:43He starts out as a southpaw,
13:45but at any opportunity,
13:46Lewis will square his shoulders,
13:47switch his feet,
13:48and just wail away.
13:49See, he's got two aggressive fighters,
13:53but it's been Lewis's aggression,
13:54which has been the big factor in round number one.
13:57Landing his left cross.
13:59And Page seemingly slightly wobbled by the left cross,
14:03but still looking to counter with his own left.
14:06Lewis throws him into the ropes
14:08and almost threw them.
14:19Lewis has put a lot of pressure on Page.
14:21A lot of things Page likes to fight at this temple.
14:23He normally is a slow, methodical fighter
14:26who punches very well,
14:27but like most good punchers,
14:29he has to get set.
14:30And when you make a puncher have to fight faster
14:32than he normally likes to,
14:34you take away a lot of his punching power.
14:35We're always talking about how a conventional fighter
14:38should throw his straight right hand
14:39against a southpaw.
14:40By the same token,
14:42a southpaw can fire a straight left hand
14:44up the fight against a conventional fighter.
14:46That's true.
14:46And that's what Lewis is doing to Page.
14:48He just landed a very good left hand function
14:50hurt Lewis temporarily now.
14:53Just remember,
14:54Page fought a very gutsy fight
14:56against Jose Luis Lopez.
14:58He was knocked down twice
15:00and still won the fight.
15:03But I think the fact that Lopez
15:04was a much slower starter comparatively.
15:07And this guy right here
15:08started with such a fast attempt on it.
15:14James Page working with the fourth trainer
15:16of his career coming into the fight,
15:18Yoel Judah.
15:20It is said in the sport
15:22that Judah didn't have much chance
15:23to work with Page.
15:24And Page looking increasingly ring rusty
15:27as Lewis bats him around
15:29through most of round number one.
15:32Big round for Andrew.
15:33Six-Heads Lewis of Guyana.
15:37I scored that a 10-8 round, Jim.
15:41I want you to breathe.
15:42Breathe.
15:42You see what happened?
15:44You see what happened?
15:45Breathe.
15:46Breathe.
15:47Breathe.
15:49Keep breathing.
15:49Keep breathing.
15:50Keep breathing.
15:51You saw that?
15:51Uh-huh.
15:52How are you saw?
15:52Six.
15:53You've got to stick to our game plan.
15:56Game plan is speed.
15:57Okay?
15:57Yeah.
15:58All you got to do with this kid, listen, listen, listen, let your jams go, then let straight
16:06right-handed hook, double up on your hooks on this kid.
16:08He's right in front of you.
16:09You understand me?
16:10And move.
16:10Keep the hand.
16:11I told you, keep him up in front of your face, right?
16:13Breathe.
16:14Breathe.
16:14I don't need a cup, buddy.
16:15Take this, take it.
16:17Come here.
16:17Come here.
16:18No, I want you to use it.
16:23Lewis, Lewis spent a lot of himself in that round and put a lot of damage on Page.
16:30Can Lewis keep up that pace?
16:32How much more can Page take?
16:34I think it's the case also, the fact that he's setting a good pace, but he's landed most
16:39of his blows, so if he's landed blows, he's going to be doing just as much damage to the
16:43other guy.
16:43If he was throwing a lot of blows and Page was blocking the punches and making a miss
16:49would be a different factor.
16:50Harold Lutterman with the more conventional scoring 10-9 in the first round, not buying
16:55into Larry Merchant's 10-8 campaign.
16:58A CompuBox wipeout.
17:00Lewis landing 42 out of 101 to 15 out of 56 to Page.
17:04Lewis landing more than half his power shots.
17:06Big right hand by Page.
17:09Lewis comes back with a 1-2.
17:11And a right hand of his own.
17:13There's that straight left hand again, right up the gut, by Andrew Lewis.
17:20It's just a much faster pace than Page wants to fight at.
17:24And he's now turned to a conventional style, and he does it in a very smooth way.
17:29Yeah, this is what happens after when you get a puncher, when he likes to get set, and all
17:34of a sudden he has to start fighting at a faster pace, and it's totally unorganized.
17:38And suddenly he's not a puncher that much, too.
17:41He's a normal fighter.
17:42Emanuel, when a guy has such a natural punching power as Page, does he tend to ignore too much
17:48of the other game?
17:49I think that's a big thing.
17:50I think that's a big thing.
17:51In particular, his basic boxing, he doesn't utilize the other talents as much as he should,
17:55because he's physically a big man.
17:57And his jab should be one of his biggest weapons, instead of just a left hook.
18:05Page trying to get his jab going here in the second round.
18:09You heard Yuel Judah asking James to use the jab.
18:12Interesting, of course, because Judah's son, Zab Judah, is one of the most distinctive southpaws
18:17in the sport.
18:17And you don't often hear trainers asking their fighters to try to set up with the jab against
18:22a southpaw.
18:23It often gets blocked.
18:24That's correct.
18:26Also, Page hired Judah to train him because he works in the same gym that Six Heads does
18:35in Brooklyn.
18:36And he felt that he would be able to help him.
18:40And that's very interesting.
18:41And then Lewis pushes Page onto the seat of his pass.
18:48It's a knockdown.
18:50And Kenny Bayless picks up the count at Six.
18:52Okay, come to me.
18:55I think the knockdown was a good punch, but a lot of it is also just the basic balance
19:00of his feet is just not as good and accurate as that of Lewis.
19:06Lewis seems to be much more balanced.
19:08Mouthpiece replacement here.
19:09Buys a little extra time for Page.
19:13Now with the mousepiece back in, Lewis steps back.
19:18Another hard left hand and a big right by Lewis.
19:21Page trying to counter, but a half step slow.
19:26Lewis going to the body.
19:29Page swinging wildly and missing.
19:32Lewis picking his shot and landing.
19:35Huge round for Lewis.
19:36And if the first one wasn't 10-8, this one certainly is.
19:43But in between all of the big punches, Page still has a big shot every once in a while.
19:48It keeps him in the fight and he's still dangerous.
19:51But an early deficit on the scorecards for sure for James Page as Andrew Lewis nominates
19:58the first two rounds.
19:59You know what about you?
20:01What about you?
20:03You can't work?
20:05Hey, you gotta let your hands go.
20:07You understand me?
20:09Let your hands go, Paige.
20:11You sitting in front of you. Look. Right here.
20:13Look. Look for your upper pain.
20:15I'm cutting him right there.
20:17Listen, your uppercut is sitting right there.
20:19Your jab. So we're going back to basics.
20:21Good jab and put it on him.
20:23And then get the fuck out.
20:25Everything off the jab.
20:27Okay?
20:29There's the uppercut.
20:33Off of these first two rounds, you might have to say
20:37that
20:39if he can sustain this,
20:41Andrew Lewis has
20:43the kind of strength and will
20:45and even
20:47skill and punch that might
20:49give Shane Mosley more trouble
20:51than any other welterweight I can think of
20:53right now. You know, and I think
20:55the instruction that Paige will get
20:57out of here.
20:59He's having a problem dealing with Lewis's speed
21:01and he's never going to be able to deal with it.
21:03So he needs to just start throwing more punches
21:05and hope that he can land something
21:07because at the weight it's going, he's getting beat anyway.
21:11And he cannot try to time and anticipate the punches of Lewis
21:15to make it a little too fast.
21:17And that would be a little too fast.
21:19Punch that set up the knockdown was a right-hand uppercut.
21:21Lewis landed another one of them just a moment ago,
21:23not with quite as much mustard on it.
21:25There's a right hand across the top and another right uppercut.
21:27And another right uppercut.
21:29And another right uppercut.
21:31Leaning into that punch and giving Lewis an easy target for it.
21:39Lewis picking Paige apart from the outside,
21:42and Paige, one punch at a time.
21:47I will say this by the Paige, he is very determined.
21:50He's not giving up.
21:51A lot of lesser fighters would have given up in this fight.
21:53Well, all that ring rust, 19 months out of the ring,
21:57Shirley Paige feels as though he can work his way back into the fight
22:01if he can hang on.
22:02Well, he's getting hit with punches.
22:04It's not going to help him a lot of things.
22:05Blocking a lot of punches is different.
22:08He lands a left hook on the neck of Six Heads, Lewis.
22:12He needs to keep doing what he's doing.
22:14He's got to keep throwing a lot of punches.
22:24Six Heads is attacked, slowing here in the third round.
22:28The basic balance in position of Lewis is just so tremendous
22:32as compared to that in the balance in the position of Paige.
22:36That alone makes the power on us in this match.
22:39Lewis is in a position at all times to punch effectively
22:42and to block punches.
22:47Perfect example of that right there.
22:49Paige coming up with those big punches again.
22:51He lands two left hook.
22:52When Lewis squares his shoulders up and straightens his feet,
22:57he gives Paige a chance to make his left hook attack.
22:59That's right.
23:00And Paige still does punch in the fourth round.
23:06There it is again.
23:07Yep.
23:07There it is again.
23:08Because Lewis leads with the right hook instead of the dab.
23:11And when he leads with the right hook,
23:13he turns his shoulder and gives Paige chances
23:15to counter with the left hook.
23:16Lewis needs to use his dab
23:18instead of leading with the hook all the time.
23:20And he's so intent on trying to finish Paige
23:22that he's not even looking for punches back himself.
23:27Now Paige gets a chance to try an uppercut.
23:29Lewis with another right-hand uppercut of his own
23:31and missed.
23:32Goes to Paige's belly twice with the left hand.
23:35This fight definitely would not go to it in 12 rounds.
23:39Doesn't look that way.
23:41It's an all-out roar so far.
23:43When a fighter can punch as well as Paige can,
23:47he hangs in there, Emmanuel,
23:48simply because he knows he's always got a shot.
23:51Yes.
23:52And that's why he hasn't given up yet.
23:54He knows he's one punch away from this.
23:56You understand me?
23:57You got to let your hands go.
23:58You understand?
23:59You got to let your hands go, baby.
24:02You want this fight?
24:02Then you want it.
24:03You want it?
24:04You got to let the steps go.
24:06You're in it with that hook.
24:06Double up on it.
24:07All right, you got to hurt this kid.
24:09Get him going backwards.
24:10Water.
24:10Give me the water.
24:10Breathe.
24:12Breathe.
24:12Six.
24:14Breathe.
24:14Come on.
24:15Give me four.
24:16Give me four.
24:17Breathe.
24:17Come on.
24:18Come on.
24:18Breathe.
24:18Don't go.
24:19Back to the box.
24:19Come on.
24:20One.
24:20One more time.
24:21Two.
24:23All right.
24:24Back to the box.
24:24We'll stay in front of him no more.
24:26Give me six.
24:26Hands up.
24:27Box.
24:28Box.
24:28We've got to be in the middle of the fucking ring.
24:31Because he's just hoping you're going to be in the middle of the fucking ring.
24:32He's just hoping you're going to run out of the fucking gas.
24:35Breathe.
24:35We're here to go talk.
24:36Breathe.
24:36Breathe.
24:37Breathe.
24:37Breathe.
24:37You don't close.
24:38You can see his bottom.
24:39Watch his bottom.
24:40He's bottom.
24:40He's bottom.
24:40He's bottom.
24:40He's bottom.
24:41Interesting that most of the talking in Lewis' corner is done by his manager and cut man,
24:46Nelson Fernandez.
24:47He's the one with the colorful language.
24:50And, of course, it's Yoel Judah who's being very forceful in trying to get James Page back
24:55on the right page to stay in the pipe.
24:58I think Yoel is giving him good instructions, too.
25:00Because he cannot handle the speed of Lewis, so he can just forget that.
25:03Let's go to Harold Lederman for a look at how he scored the first three rounds.
25:07Harold.
25:07Okay, Jim.
25:08Three to nothing.
25:09Thirty to twenty-six.
25:10Obviously, Andrew Sixth has Lewis.
25:12Jim, my criteria for a 10-8 round without a knockdown is if the other guy's punching
25:17back, I'll still go 10-9.
25:19And that's the reason I went 10-9 in the first round.
25:21James Page was throwing punches back.
25:23But I've got to tell you something, Jim.
25:24I'm a little bit against this, uh, I don't know if you guys noticed this thing with the
25:27mouthpiece.
25:28I mean, Lewis scores a knockdown.
25:30Page is obviously hurt.
25:32Lewis wants to take advantage.
25:33And the referee calls time.
25:35By the time Andrew Lewis got a James Page, James was totally recovered.
25:38What was he going to do, Harold?
25:39The mouthpiece was out.
25:41The mouthpiece had to be replaced.
25:42But the idea is, should you take away a man's advantage?
25:45Well, there was a stoppage in the fight because, uh, because of the count.
25:50I mean, I'm not sure.
25:51Is Bayless just supposed to ignore the possibility to put the mouthpiece back in because of the
25:56timing of that?
25:57No?
25:57Well, I certainly wouldn't put it in when Lewis had a chance to win the fight.
26:02So you would have made Page fight without the mouthpiece?
26:04Well, in this situation, yes, because Lewis could have ended it.
26:07All right.
26:09Meanwhile, round four action continues, and it's more of the same.
26:12At this stage, Page seems to be totally content on just trying to land one big punch.
26:17He's not even really concerned too much with excessively trying to block punches of order.
26:22He's looking just to land power punch and get himself back into the fight.
26:25Probably thinking that his chances of winning a decision have already gone, if not down the
26:31drain, pretty far south.
26:32That's correct.
26:34And Lewis still out throwing and out landing Page as they reach the final minute of round
26:39number four.
26:40Page waiting and looking, as Emmanuel says, for the one big shot.
26:46Lewis is now fighting the fight that we anticipated him fighting.
26:50Outside, moving inside, throwing punches, staying out of range, doing what you just
26:56see him doing here.
26:57But even though Page has been beaten this round, he's been hit with less power punches this
27:02round than any other previous round.
27:03And he's been able to avoid most of Lewis's power shots at this point.
27:07Now, Lewis doing his scoring with the jab at this round.
27:09But when he throws the jab, instead of leading with the right hook, he doesn't give Page the
27:16same chance to counter with the left hook, which is his best punch.
27:19That's correct.
27:20The Page's been throwing some pretty decent right hand tonight, too.
27:23It was surprising.
27:24There's a power left hook following the right hand.
27:26Yep.
27:27He shot the right hand more to get in position for the left hand than he shot back afterwards.
27:31And this round right here, he's looked at shot, but he's did a lot better, I think, than in
27:36most of the previous round.
27:37Yes.
27:37He's definitely doing better.
27:39James Page's whole life has been that of a survivor, and so far, that's all he's doing here is
27:46surviving.
27:47Yes, but he's a dangerous survivor.
27:49Yes.
27:50But he's a dangerous survivor.
28:03Deep, in, deep, deep, in, through your nose.
28:07One more.
28:08Come on.
28:08Page.
28:09Listen to me.
28:10They told him to take the rounds.
28:11He's trying to take the rounds.
28:12You know what I'm saying?
28:12He's up to me.
28:13All right?
28:14Go in and get him.
28:15You see one now, Warren?
28:16No.
28:17He, listen, go five, eight, six, keep moving.
28:21Okay, six.
28:22See the same thing.
28:24Same thing with this motherfucker out there.
28:26Where did you get the speed?
28:27Don't get killed.
28:28Let me get him.
28:29Okay?
28:29You're getting better, buddy.
28:31You're getting better by the second.
28:31On him, baby.
28:33Okay?
28:34Manuel, Manuel, Lewis' corner may be telling him the
28:38smart thing to do.
28:40Be careful.
28:41I think he's got the quickness.
28:43That's right.
28:43But he's had a chance here to make a spectacular performance, and he has such an edge.
28:50Why hold him back?
28:51Well, I think at this point in time, for whatever reason, he seems to be boxing, but he's not
28:56that effective when he's boxing.
28:57And I think when he's power punching, he's more effective.
29:02Pretty effective with a little shoulder blockage there.
29:05Well, it's amazing that he's actually been able to physically handle Page a lot, simply
29:09because of a fact called balance.
29:11Page's balance is so much worse, and he walks on his heels, whereas Lewis punches prime
29:17rather from the bowel of his feet, which gives him a tremendous advantage balance-wise, and
29:21physically makes him look a lot stronger.
29:24Manny, we always talk about ring rust when a fighter's been off as long as Page.
29:27Now, he says he sparred 150 rounds coming into the fight, but he doesn't look as comfortable
29:32in there as he's looked at his good performances.
29:34Is it a case where no matter how much you spar, there's no substitute for actually having to
29:39fight?
29:39Well, it's not anything like the real boxing, but also, I don't think that Lewis has been
29:43that busy.
29:44Both of them, they serve a power taint.
29:46He's from China.
29:47They left him by Page.
29:48Yes, what I'm saying, he's still a power puncher.
29:50He's punching with full power, even though he's looking clumsy.
29:54But I think the fact that Lewis has a more flashy or faster fight is more of a factor.
29:59Break, break, step back, please.
30:01Most of the guys that I've saw Page fight have been basically right in front of him.
30:04And Lewis, Lewis has given him angles, twisting and turning, doing a lot of turn-up, vertical
30:09type moves, throwing right uppercuts like Chris Nassim Hamid.
30:12He's doing a variety of things, and I don't think Page is used to that.
30:16He's basically a one-dimensional, straightforward power puncher.
30:20Certainly, Page's most memorable performance was in his 12-round decision win over Jose Luis
30:24Lopez.
30:25Lopez was a guy he didn't have to go hunting for.
30:27Lopez was right in front of him.
30:29Lopez can whack with the right hand, and he got credit for two knockdowns against Page.
30:33Yes, but see, Page does have to do a lot of pivoting, turning around, going to different
30:37angles, and therefore, you can see his awkwardness and his bad balance often shows up a lot.
30:45Andrew Lewis going to the body.
30:46Page comes back with a body shot of his own.
30:49Lewis peppering Page with his right hand jab.
30:53Now he goes to the conventional stance again.
30:55Jabs with the left hand.
30:56Hits Page with a right.
30:58But you're assuming, Page is being hit a lot, but he hasn't been hurt as much as he was earlier.
31:04And actually, from what I can say, at three times, at least, I've saw Lewis seriously hurt.
31:10So he's still very dangerous right now.
31:12There it is again.
31:13We got it!
31:13We got it!
31:14We got it!
31:15And I think that Lewis has developed a lot more respect, I know I have, for Page as
31:19his fight has progressed.
31:26Page, tactically outgunned early, showing heart.
31:30Tremendous right hook, right uppercut.
31:33Lewis again with a right uppercut.
31:36See, the thing, when I don't know Lewis was blocking all those punches, he was in such
31:40a position that it was very easy for him to come back with a counterpunch.
31:44Right hook for Lewis out of the southpaw.
31:46Back with a straight left hand.
31:48A terrific last 30 seconds of the round for Andrew Sixhead's Lewis, who continues to pile
31:54up points on the scorecard against James Payne.
31:58Still to come, 126-pound main event, Guti Espadas, the only natural-born son of a boxing
32:06champion ever to himself win a championship.
32:10Imagine that stat.
32:11In the whole history of the sport, he's the only natural-born son of a titleist ever to
32:15have himself won a title.
32:17And especially in today's tab, when it seems like every father has got his son boxing.
32:22It's amazing.
32:23Listen, when he throws his right, he's looking to throw his hook.
32:29Here's that Page left hand.
32:31That's his money punch, but he's landed at three or four times square on Lewis.
32:36Lewis might have blinked a little bit, but he kept on coming.
32:42I like that combo.
32:43Right hook, right uppercut.
32:45He's got a lot of weapons against one weapon.
32:51Power punches through five.
32:52Lewis, 128 out of 250, 51%.
32:55Page, 49 out of 188.
32:58Page still looking to land the one big punch.
33:00Lewis still pitching a shutout on the Letterman scorecard.
33:03Round six arrives.
33:04Both guys have shown that they can take a good punch.
33:07I think both guys have shown that they want to win this fight badly, Harrison.
33:14Andrew Lewis told us yesterday, I'm hungry, I'm deadly.
33:18You know what I mean?
33:19He said, yes, we know what you mean.
33:20He said, you know what I mean?
33:21I said, yes, we know what you mean.
33:25And if you notice how quickly he pumps that jab, that's how quickly his tongue goes as well.
33:32Unbelievable.
33:33Talks faster than Kevin Kelly.
33:34I didn't think it was possible.
33:36Well, that's possible.
33:37We know that now.
33:37From Georgetown, Guyana.
33:43Guyana is a little country on the northeast corner of South America.
33:54I think that at this point in time, Lewis has developed a lot of respect in the Page,
33:59even though he's beating him.
34:00And he's right now a little bit more cautious of to some degree himself.
34:04And he throws Page into the ropes and sets him up for a sucker right hand.
34:08Just missed the clean shot that might have put Page in big trouble once again.
34:15He's fighting a good fight.
34:16By just using his jab and trying to get Page to relax,
34:18and maybe he's laying in a sneak punch after getting him to relax.
34:21Whereas before, every punch was a knockout punch,
34:24and Page was anticipating that his body was tense.
34:27And now he's trying to relax him a little bit.
34:29Plus, he's got to slow down so he doesn't burn himself out.
34:32Watching referee Kenny Bayless in there.
34:34Emmanuel reminds us that the Nevada State Athletic Commission
34:37has lost three veteran referees within the past couple of years.
34:42Retirements by Mills Lane and now Richard Steele,
34:45the unfortunate suicide of Mitch Halperin.
34:48Has the landscape here changed
34:49with considerably less experienced referees doing big fights?
34:52I think so.
34:53But I think the new guys are doing probably good for the most part.
34:56And I've been very impressed with Kenny.
34:57Yeah, I think Kenny has great potential.
34:59He's got certainly a lot of athletic talent,
35:01which referees need in this day and age.
35:03Oh, yes.
35:07And this has turned out to be a good fight,
35:08and he's let it be a good fight, too.
35:10But not coming in excessively interfering with the fighters.
35:16Lewis still banging away.
35:18Page still taking many more punches than he's able to land.
35:22Page still waiting and trying to land one big shot.
35:25And Page still are dangerous.
35:27And Page still are dangerous.
35:27Definitely.
35:28I think he's more dangerous theoretically than actually, Emanuel.
35:35Well, it seems like he's become very sloppy,
35:40but for whatever reason,
35:41it seems he hasn't been hurt that much lately.
35:45Left eye to get him to swell just a little bit on James Payne.
35:49Here's a look at the current state of this division
35:58and some of the big match-ups.
35:59Shane Mosley is fighting Shannon Taylor,
36:01an undefeated Australian.
36:03Next month, we are watching Lewis versus Page
36:06for one version of the title.
36:09And Vernon Forrest is still scheduled
36:11to fight Lewis's countryman, Raoul Frank,
36:14for another version of the title.
36:17We haven't included Oscar De La Hoya's fight
36:21against Arturo Gatti in this picture
36:23because De La Hoya has already stated
36:27that that will be his last fight as a welterweight
36:29moving up to junior middleweight.
36:33This is the situation where Lewis threw Page into the ropes
36:43and then tried to knock him over the ropes
36:45with the right hand
36:46and the blow glanced rather than to land solidly.
36:52Harold, how do you have it through six?
36:54Okay, Jim, I still got it in a shutout.
36:56Six to nothing, 60 to 53.
36:58Andrew, six heads Lewis.
36:59You got to give him that extra point in round two
37:01for the knockdown.
37:02He's so far, he's winning it in the last three rounds
37:04with that right jab and the combinations there.
37:06Right jab, you know, straight left hand.
37:08And James Page is just not moving his hands,
37:12not throwing any punches.
37:13You can't win a fight unless you land a punch.
37:15James Page is just not punching enough.
37:18Andrew Lewis winning it on clean punching.
37:20Andrew, even when he's jabbing, there's no real power in this jab.
37:24His glove is not even closed, but it's just enough to try to keep
37:27that once again, that's the balance factor.
37:29Yeah, footwork.
37:30It just makes him look physically so much stronger
37:32because of the better balance in his.
37:34But he's still setting him up, hopefully, for a big, silent punch.
37:38The jabs are what we call just fielding and probing type jabs.
37:41No power there.
37:43Bayless warning Lewis.
37:44That was it.
37:45The punch of the team.
37:46He's looking at him.
37:47Watching out for the jab.
37:48Pick it up.
37:49And then it was a right hook.
37:51Right hook off of the jab.
37:52Brilliant.
37:53Just a brilliant punch.
37:54But he never saw it.
37:55And that was not one of his power punches, but he relaxed.
37:59That hurt, Page, most worse than the earlier uppercut,
38:02and Kenny Bayless stops the fight.
38:04Andrew, six heads, Lewis, with a technical knockout of James Page.
38:16Well, the punch you don't see, right?
38:18Punch you don't see is a punch, actually.
38:20He was so preoccupied with that little car jab,
38:23and all of a sudden, it was an explosion on the left side of his head
38:26that he never even knew about it.
38:28From the same hand that was doing the jabbing.
38:30Six heads has impressive punching power.
38:33And I thought he found a good fight.
38:35He made adjustments once he realized that Page was able to absorb his punches.
38:39And he changed up and just boxed a little bit, did different things.
38:42And he took some pretty good wax himself.
38:44So you have a new title holder in the welterweight division.
38:51And for the first time in the history of the tiny nation of Guyana,
38:56Guyana produces a world professional titleist in boxing.
39:00And a personality who could attract a following because this guy is engaging.
39:08He talks a mile a minute.
39:10He's an unusual dude, to say the loser.
39:12I mean, the nickname enough.
39:14The nickname alone, Six Heads Lewis.
39:16There's like six miles speaking at the same time, too.
39:18It's unbelievable.
39:19I've heard a lot of people speak fast.
39:22Kelly, my daughter, Sevent, speaks very fast.
39:25And you speak pretty fast sometimes.
39:26Sometimes.
39:27But compared to this man, you are slow motion.
39:30Watch the right hook again, Emmanuel.
39:34Perfect land, right on the temple.
39:36And a punch he didn't see, once again.
39:38I mean, he was preoccupied with trying to deal with that paw and jam.
39:41And, of course, the accumulation of punishment from the early rounds.
39:44I think so.
39:44Also a factor.
39:45Yes, it was.
39:47You know, but still, both guys was really determined.
39:50And I think that right now in Lewis, we have a strong contender right now.
39:55And that welterweight mix-up is right there with Shane Mosley.
39:58Look at him straight in the eye.
39:59And it's a serious challenge.
40:01Let me ask you something.
40:01Larry pointed out that Oscar De La Hoya prepares to move up to 154 pounds
40:06as you look at the new titleists celebrating in the ring.
40:09If Mosley's staying at 147, if Trinidad's going up to 160 to fight middleweights,
40:15why is Deloitte going to 154?
40:17What business is he looking for there?
40:19You know, a lot of things that Oscar De La Hoya can't understand.
40:21But maybe he is having trouble making the weight.
40:23But regardless of what weight they're going into,
40:26all of these new champions are quality champions.
40:28And I just see great fights in the welterweight, junior middleweight, and middleweight.
40:32Unfortunately, Roy Jones doesn't have anyone that serious right there.
40:35I really would like to see him still fight with Bernard Hopkins.
40:38Well, if Trinidad and Hopkins wind up facing each other at 160,
40:42as is possible in that tournament,
40:44then maybe the winner of that fight goes to 168 and fights Roy Jones.
40:48De La Hoya has always said that he didn't want to fight Fernando Vargas,
40:51but that becomes the marquee opponent at 154.
40:55Meanwhile, for this fight,
40:56let's go to Michael Buffer for the official particular.
40:58Ladies and gentlemen,
40:59referee Kenny Bayless calls a halt to the bout following the knockdown.
41:03The official time,
41:05one minute,
41:0613 seconds of round number seven.
41:09The winner by knockout victory,
41:11and now the undefeated WBA welterweight champion of the world,
41:18from Brooklyn,
41:19New York,
41:19Andrew Sixth has a new win.
41:26He waited a long time.
41:27As he said,
41:28he went through two separate training camps last year,
41:31preparing to fight Page,
41:32and Page backed out of both those fights.
41:35Finally,
41:35Lewis got his chance,
41:37and made the most of it,
41:38particularly in this area.
41:40It was a CompuBox wipeout,
41:42as you see Lewis landing 152 more punches than Page,
41:46throwing 241 more punches than Page,
41:50and landing at a 41% connect percentage to only 24% for Page.
41:56So Lewis thoroughly dominated the fight.
41:58Now let's watch him dominate the interview with Larry Merchant.
42:02And he will, Jim.
42:03Thank you very much.
42:05Congratulations, Sixth.
42:07It seemed that in the first 30 seconds of the fight,
42:11you knew you could beat him to the punch every time.
42:14Yeah, well,
42:15I know when he's a slow starter,
42:17so he just started as early as possible,
42:18you know what I mean?
42:19Don't make me guide you,
42:20and I'm going to win the fight.
42:21You know what I'm saying?
42:23Did you think that you could knock him out?
42:26I know he can knock you out,
42:28because I spar with him in camp already,
42:29and I know he got weakness.
42:30He's very slow,
42:31and I fast more than him.
42:32I know he can't take it,
42:33he can't make it in later runs.
42:35That's why I start,
42:35my coach,
42:36my corner start telling me to start box,
42:37because I was trying to get a sluggish.
42:39So my corner said start box him,
42:41so I'm going to go to the corner.
42:43He hit you with a few solid left hands.
42:47Did you feel it?
42:49He hit me with some shots,
42:50but you know I can succeed.
42:51Lewis got a good chin,
42:52you know I can take it,
42:52you know.
42:53You know I'm a world-ranked fighter,
42:54and I'm one of them the world champion.
42:56You know,
42:57I take better shots more than that, man,
42:58so they really can't hurt me, you know?
43:00Tell us what this means to you
43:02and your country to win a title.
43:04Well, my country never win a world title,
43:06you know what I mean,
43:07so this title is the first world title
43:09Guyana ever win, you know,
43:11so I'm very proud for winning it,
43:12and I love Guyana.
43:15All right,
43:16the recognized welterweight champion
43:18of the world is Shane Mosley.
43:20What are your feelings about fighting him?
43:22Well, I'd like to bring out Shane Mosley,
43:23bring out Askedela,
43:24all the top fighters I would fight,
43:25you know,
43:26but I want Shane Mosley or Askedela,
43:27you know what I mean?
43:28First of all,
43:29I'd like to talk to Bobby around the top rank
43:31on HBO for Got Me Out Here,
43:33doing my best.
43:34Six will be seeing you again.
43:36Can you see him again?
43:37Jersey City, baby!
43:38Jersey City!
43:40Back to you.
43:41First of all,
43:42Emmanuel, he's 30 years old,
43:44he's come a long way.
43:45Obviously, the target is Mosley.
43:47If you're Nelson Fernandez's manager,
43:49try to point him toward a Mosley fight right now,
43:51or get another fight or two in between
43:53to get him more ready.
43:55I think he's a threat for anyone right now,
43:57but being that he was so inactive
43:58based on the politics
43:59and the cancellations of this fight
44:00that just took place,
44:02if I was his manager,
44:02I would try to get him another fight in between
44:04because I don't think that it's too much of a risk
44:06of him losing a fight in between.
44:08And he is a very serious threat for Shane Mosley
44:10or any of the welterweights.
44:11Interesting talent,
44:12fights from either the southpaw
44:14or the conventional stance,
44:15punching power in both hands,
44:17as you saw.
44:18It'll be fascinating to watch what happens from here
44:20with a new star in the sport of boxing,
44:22Andrew Sixhead-Lewis.
