00:00Certain things kind of trigger us, positive and negative.
00:03I'll tell you one thing that triggers me in a positive way.
00:07And it's when people just go all in with their effort.
00:13Like your results are your results, but you know me.
00:17Process.
00:18So when you go all in with your effort, I am impressed.
00:23So I don't even know, Jody, Jody, can you hear me?
00:25Hey, everybody make some noise, the whole group, make some noise.
00:29Come on, make some noise.
00:31That's a group.
00:32Dude, dude, it is 4 o'clock on a Tuesday, and y'all live in the South Bay,
00:37and we're in Mission Rock, and you're here.
00:40So congratulations on your independent wealth, number one.
00:44And also, like, wow, look at this group.
00:47It's a great group.
00:48And it's still growing.
00:49There's more on the way, apparently.
00:50And it's not even 4.
00:51So not only do they make the effort, process versus results, I'm a results guy,
00:56and the result is they're here 10 minutes early.
00:58They're early.
00:59They're in their VIP area, and, you know, you've got a ton of listeners.
01:03We've got Jerry Rice over there.
01:04I'm happy that Jerry was able to make it.
01:06Absolutely.
01:07So, you know, they're about to yawk in on their draft.
01:09Dude.
01:09No better place to do it than live with Willie and Dibby.
01:12Yeah, no doubt.
01:13So this is going to be fun.
01:14They're starting to get ready.
01:16Some more are going to be on their way.
01:17I think that they've done a little bob and weave.
01:19Like, Lucas asked them, like, how long has this league been together?
01:23And Jody's like, well, we kind of, I think in a way it sounded to me like he was like,
01:27we kind of started to build this league actually after I won the prize.
01:32It might be, you know, you're out.
01:34You're in because you can go or whatever it may be.
01:36Perfect.
01:36Yeah.
01:37Yeah, so a bunch of people here, which we're excited to see.
01:41Hell of an effort.
01:42And we'll be eating their food shortly.
01:44We can't wait.
01:46Yeah, exactly.
01:46Save some for us because we'll be over there during the break.
01:49And that's just kind of the way that goes.
01:51Yeah, you see the way my mind works, Tim.
01:53It's like, yeah, they're all here, which, like, the first thought is, oh, crap,
01:58they might actually eat all of the food.
02:00There's a lot of them.
02:01But then again, I have a good seat.
02:03And I figure they seem nice, and I'm going to help myself here pretty soon.
02:07So let's get the party started.
02:10Let's do it.
02:11Let's get it started.
02:12And, you know, once you get into this point where fantasy drafts are popping off,
02:16and I know ours is next week.
02:17Next Wednesday night.
02:18We've got the Red and Gold Summit, which is, you know, groundbreaking.
02:22And, you know, nice to know that we're the ones who have been doing it for a long time.
02:26And we absolutely rock those things.
02:28But, you know, you start with every day, you clip closer and closer and closer.
02:32And we are now nine days away from real football.
02:36From an actual game.
02:37From an actual game.
02:38Nine days from an actual game.
02:39Twelve days away from a 49er game.
02:43Seven hours.
02:43And the roster is ready to go, except for the roster is not fully ready to go.
02:48If you're just tuning in, know that Juwan Jennings' drama has not been figured out.
02:53The Niners kept five receivers.
02:55Only two of them are technically healthy.
02:57So more moves are clearly on the way as they continue to try to work through this thing, dot, dot, dot, whatever it is.
03:04We still don't even really have definition of what's going on.
03:08But it's pretty easy to tell that the Niners, A, need to do some things wide receiver-wise.
03:14But also, B, I think in a way they feel pretty good about what it is they're at least about to do.
03:21Because, surprisingly, a lot of the, like, in-emergency break glass options they had, they got rid of them.
03:29They didn't keep Russell Gates.
03:30They didn't keep Robbie Chosen.
03:32And so maybe they're going to bring those guys back if they make the practice squad.
03:36We'll see how that all works.
03:37Maybe the Jennings situation is in better shape than we think it is.
03:41That's all still TBD.
03:43Right, and we're not to the point yet where you're desperate to have him come in.
03:47You were right to say that, okay, practice tomorrow.
03:50The cuts have been made.
03:51Now you're the group.
03:52And, you know, if this was a high school team and as a coach I've gone through cuts where the next day, first day of practice,
03:58you get everyone together and you say, all right, this is the group.
04:01This is what we're going with.
04:02Tough conversations yesterday.
04:04Here's our team.
04:05Here's what we're going to do.
04:06We're going to rock it.
04:07We're going to practice here.
04:08We're going to practice there.
04:09We're going to go out and have a year.
04:10And so I don't know if Shanahan will bring all the fellows together in that same fashion, but starting tomorrow, you're the group.
04:16And I know with injuries and pop list and suspensions, there's still going to be a bit of a revolving door.
04:22But by and large, tomorrow, you're the guys.
04:25And we have faith in you.
04:27And, you know, if you're Colby, the seventh-round rookie offensive lineman, you made the team.
04:32You made it.
04:32All right, Connor Colby.
04:33Yeah.
04:33Come block somebody.
04:34Congrats.
04:35Yeah, he's in.
04:37So here's what I saw, though, earlier today.
04:40And it came from our friend Cam Inman, who covers the 49ers so well.
04:45And this is when I want to grab all of this fear because this is kind of the way we fan.
04:52Most fans, especially if it's sports radio, you kind of wake up thinking what's wrong.
04:57You know what I mean?
04:58You wake up thinking, all right, the wide receiver room, what the hell's going on there?
05:03What about the injuries on the offensive line?
05:05And are these young defensive linemen going to actually produce?
05:09These are my fears.
05:11Well, what if we did this from the other side?
05:14And I hear a lot of people say, look, it is a transition year.
05:19You can't expect too much from the 49ers.
05:23You can't expect some.
05:24But you can't go over the top.
05:26Like, I'm out on this idea that the Niners are a big favorite this year.
05:30And then Cam wrote something that we have talked about a little bit.
05:35But to see it in print, it hit me.
05:38It straight hit me.
05:39I'd like to read to you because all of the teams on the Niners' schedule have now officially named their starting quarterback.
05:49For week one, yeah.
05:49The last one to do it was the New Orleans Saints who just announced it earlier today.
05:55So, I'm going to read you the list.
05:58Okay.
05:59And you tell me what goes through your mind when I say it.
06:03Ladies and gentlemen, here's the list.
06:06As far as week one is concerned,
06:31those are the starting quarterbacks for the teams the Niners will play this year.
06:38And I would like to flatly ask each and every one of you,
06:41especially those of you who have struck some sort of a negative chord
06:46with regard to the Niners' chances this year,
06:49listen to that list.
06:51Oh, yeah.
06:51And someone explain to me, other than injury to major players,
06:58what on earth could your reasoning possibly be
07:02for thinking that the 49ers will not be a playoff team this year?
07:07I would love to hear someone pitch this to me
07:11and explain to me, again, other than major injury.
07:15I don't want to hear Brock or Christian might get hurt.
07:17But other than that aspect, how on earth can you look at that list
07:22and tell me that your expectations are not high for the San Francisco 49ers?
07:28They should be high.
07:30Just a couple things.
07:31First and foremost, as you're rattling those names off,
07:33one thing really struck me.
07:35How many of those quarterbacks they're going to face
07:37were the number one overall pick in the NFL draft?
07:41Oh, that's fun.
07:42Let's see.
07:43One, two, three, four.
07:46You got it.
07:49Four.
07:49Five.
07:50Yep, keep going.
07:51Six.
07:51Keep going.
07:52Really?
07:55Seven.
07:56Caleb Williams.
07:57No, I got Caleb Williams.
07:59Cam Ward.
07:59Yeah, I got Cam Ward.
08:00Bryce Young.
08:01Bryce Young, that's great.
08:02Trevor Lawrence.
08:02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:03Calamari.
08:04Oh, my eyes went over Bryce Young.
08:05Maker Bayfield.
08:06Sure.
08:07And then you go all the way back, back, back to Matthew Stafford.
08:11By the way, it's half.
08:13Half of the quarterbacks.
08:14Correct.
08:15Number one overall pick.
08:16So just hearing that list, I was like, man, that's a lot of not only first-rounders,
08:19but number one overall.
08:21And the counterpoint to what could possibly go wrong is the defense last year.
08:27And I know Salah's in, and I mentioned this to Charles Davis.
08:31Yep.
08:3129th in points per game allowed.
08:34Hideous.
08:34They only had two takeaways over the last nine games, which is you can't survive when you're
08:40doing that defensively.
08:42And this is the other capper, Mark.
08:44Red zone defense last year, 31st out of 32.
08:47So if the defense is not a lot better, you can find your way into losing some of these
08:54games against teams that you should beat.
08:56Well, of course.
08:56I'm not suggesting they're going to go 17-0.
08:59I know.
08:59And some of these quarterbacks that I just mentioned are not bad players.
09:02Stafford's a wonderful player.
09:04Yep.
09:04If he's healthy.
09:05Baker Mayfield.
09:05Kyler Murray's problematic for you.
09:07He's problematic, right?
09:08And yes, Baker Mayfield, this is a good player.
09:11Russell Wilson used to be, but he's capable.
09:14And we don't know who Cam Ward is going to be.
09:16And Caleb Williams has a new coach, and he might be better.
09:20And Sam Donald was dangerous last year.
09:22Like, I can do all of that.
09:23But, like, listen to that list when you say it all at once.
09:31And again, notice that the Josh Allens of the world, the Burroughs, the Mahomes, the Jalen Hurts,
09:38on we could go, even to the Jared Goffs and the Lamar Jacksons and the Justin Herberts,
09:44and we can go on and on.
09:45Sure.
09:45None of them are on the 49ers' schedule.
09:47I was looking at the Mike Sandoe quarterback tiers.
09:51They play one game, actually two games, against a tier one, Matthew Stafford, if the back holds out.
09:59And they play two games against quarterbacks in tier two.
10:02The rest of your games, your other 14 are tier three and below.
10:06Well, and some of these young guys are allowed to be good just because they're not in the tier.
10:10Like, Cam Ward might be amazing.
10:11I don't know.
10:12It could be.
10:12Right?
10:13Caleb Williams should be better.
10:14He should be better.
10:15Bryce Young was, like, nice at the end of the year last year.
10:19But I think, overall, you get the idea.
10:22So, that's truly where my mind's at, and we'd love to take some calls on that right now, just as a test case.
10:28888-957-9570.
10:31If you don't think the 49ers are a playoff team this year, give me one reason that's not, well,
10:39Christian McCaffrey could get hurt.
10:42Take that off the board, because that's a big who knows.
10:45That's a feather blowing in the wind.
10:47But outside of that, when I counter with that list, if you've got any respect for Robert Sala whatsoever,
10:56you think this is a playoff team.
10:58I'd love, and I'm going to be open-minded here, but I'd love to hear somebody pitch to us the idea that expectations should be tempered for this team when that's who they're playing.
11:11Give me a break.
11:12Right.
11:12Give me a break.
11:13I don't think that it should be tempered, and I've been on record saying I would go over the 10-and-a-half.
11:19I think there's 11 wins in this schedule, even if you sustain some injuries, and even if McCaffrey misses a month,
11:25you now have Brian Robinson Jr., who is more than competent.
11:30He's a guy who could step in.
11:32Basically, he's kind of Jordan Mason.
11:34You would expect that sort of productivity if he gets opportunity.
11:38The interesting thing to me, Mark, is the timing of the offseason.
11:42January, you bring back Robert Sala, and then in April in the draft, you use your first five picks on defensive players.
11:49So if you think that Robert Sala had a voice in that room, you're absolutely right.
11:54So Sala gets hired, and then you take five defensive players first in your draft.
11:59Yep.
11:59So that tells me Sala liked certain players, and the team went forward trying to make this defense better.
12:05So if you believe in Sala and their ability to find defensive talent, then absolutely they should be better.
12:11You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ, FM, NHT1, San Francisco, and Odyssey Sports Station in the home.
12:18So the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries always live on the free Odyssey app, coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
12:25And in this particular case, coming to you live from Splash at Thrive City, where Jody and the gang are getting ready for their fantasy draft.
12:34They are on the scene.
12:35Maybe a few more are going to work their way in, and then the draft will unfold.
12:40And so we'll start to get a little bit of a vibe of what a draft looks like, feels like, who's going higher than we thought, who's going lower than we thought.
12:47Just one example, but it's kind of fun to see that almost use it like your own mock draft, if you will.
12:54So that's all going on right now.
12:56Willard and Dibs live.
12:57And again, 888-957-9570.
13:00What if you take that other perspective, what does that do for your expectations of the 49ers this year?
13:07And I have a huge amount of respect for Robert Saleh, and he's not going to keep this thing vanilla by any stretch.
13:14And so, sure, I know there will be injuries.
13:17I know there will be players who right now are question marks, and maybe they will underperform.
13:21I know everyone's excited about Marquise Siegel, but who knows what happens when the lights come on.
13:28I don't know.
13:29I'm not suggesting they're going to win all the games.
13:32But explain to me how they're going to lose most of them.
13:35Like, explain to me how they're going to lose most of the games to these quarterbacks.
13:40Yeah, it's not about most of them, but if you want to just go ahead and, like, play the schedule game, worst-case scenario, injuries aside,
13:48you're opening up against Seattle on the road, never easy, and Sam Darnold coming off a great year,
13:54and the Seahawks with a great defensive-minded head coach, that game feels to me, without Jawan Jennings,
14:01maybe he plays, and who knows what the receivers are going to be like.
14:05That game feels like a Jake Moody special.
14:08It's a losable game in the opener against Seattle.
14:10I think that game is more likely to be 17-16 than it is 31-30.
14:15Yeah, you're probably right.
14:16But the very next week, you get to go play Spencer Rattler.
14:20Give me a break.
14:21Oh, yeah.
14:21I mean, he's likely to get rattled at home.
14:23He's the Rattler.
14:24It's a two.
14:25Kyler Murray after that, Trevor Lawrence, Matthew Stafford.
14:28Again, I'm not saying, and then Baker Mayfield.
14:30I'm not saying these are incapable players, but there's nobody who is going to come in and just carve you up
14:38if your defense is, I don't know, worth the salt.
14:42Like, I mean, again, I still want to trumpet that as much as possible.
14:46When people go through all of the reasons why things went south for the 49ers last year,
14:51you'll hear most people go, well, injuries, Mark.
14:54It was injuries.
14:55Sure, you're not wrong, and some of those injuries were on the defensive side of the ball.
15:00So if that's your point, I get it.
15:02Although when people talk about injuries, they're not usually talking about defense.
15:06They're talking about McCaffrey.
15:07They're talking about the wide receivers.
15:10That's what they're usually talking about, Trent Williams.
15:13But that team went 6-11 last year because, as you just pointed out, their defense was patently awful.
15:20They were not bad.
15:21They were terrible.
15:22Right.
15:22They were brutally, brutally awful, and they were still in games that we often felt, man, you had that.
15:30You had that sucker there at the end.
15:32At least three or four games where you're like, dude, you just coughed that up.
15:36And that was with a defense that was performing at a bottom-of-the-league level.
15:40If solid can get this even just into the top half of the league, I think the 49ers are going to have a wonderful season.
15:47And I think that it's going to come down to how they do in the second half, and I'm going to borrow from Guru and throw out a Maggie Seaver growing pains
15:55because when you're going to start and rely on this many young players, it might be a November-December where the defense really starts to take hold.
16:05And to that point, you've got the Panthers and the Browns.
16:09You've got the Titans, the Colts, and the Bears all in the back third of your schedule.
16:14So you're talking about the schedule, and, you know, Seattle on the road early is tough.
16:20You mentioned Rattler, fine.
16:21Arizona's beaten you twice in a row.
16:23And, you know, the Jaguars, the Jaguars should be better, but, I mean, not better enough to win.
16:31Short week against the Rams.
16:32The Rams are going to be very difficult.
16:35Tampa Bay with Baker Mayfield and that offense, that offense is going to test you now.
16:40So when you get through that first six, you might be 3-3.
16:44And at that point, obviously, no time to panic, but I think that the first six games are a lot tougher than the last six.
16:52Let's go to Mike in Santa Clara here on Willard and Dibs, live at Splash at Thrive City.
16:57Hi, Mike.
16:57Thanks for calling.
16:58What's up?
17:00Thanks, guys.
17:01Thanks for taking my call.
17:02You know, going off of your question, Willard and Dibs, you know, injury, barring injuries aside and everything, the one area I think that could just be questionable for me is the receiver play.
17:16For me, you know, you're obviously getting Ayuk back after week six, but, again, how is he going to be after six weeks?
17:24And also, you know, like how comfortable and how, you know, fresh is he going to be?
17:30And if you remember last season when he was coming back, he did not have the greatest time before – he did not have the greatest play before he got hurt either.
17:40So that's one part for me.
17:41How is Juwan Jennings going to feel – how fresh is he going to be?
17:45He's not really playing at all during the preseason amid, like, you know, the cast strain or the contract situation.
17:52So you're really left with just, you know, Kittle, Ricky Pearsall, and, I mean, you're out Demarcus Robinson for three weeks also now.
18:00So really for me, it's the wide receiver section that's really questionable for me that could lead to a potential bad season.
18:08Among that, you guys – you've also kind of said it, Dibs.
18:11You know, what's going to happen with the Moody situation?
18:14How many times has it come down where a point or three points has really made a difference in the game where we could have won it?
18:20So those are my two areas, guys.
18:22And last thing I wanted to say is can't wait to see you guys on the 4th over at King's Fish House.
18:26So looking forward to meeting you guys finally.
18:29Mike, can't wait to see you there.
18:30Yeah, it's going to be a big night next Thursday night.
18:33We're looking forward to it.
18:34Mike, you bring up legit concerns.
18:36I'm not – I'm certainly not trying to make a point that the Niners are concern-free.
18:40I'm just talking about how do you then blend that with what you're going to see as the larger scale of their schedule.
18:48If you want to have concerns about the wide receiver slot, who doesn't?
18:53Everybody does, but I also think that's largely a concern early rather than late.
18:59This could go a bunch of different ways.
19:02But, you know, I've said this a bunch of times.
19:04If you do get some level of health as you get deeper into the season, I'm very comfortable with the group.
19:10Yeah.
19:10I think there's a lot of depth there, actually, but that comes once you get into the season.
19:16If you're concerned about it early, I get it, but I don't think the first three weeks of the season,
19:21those are not going to crater your entire year.
19:24It's not enough for me to say, oh, yeah, the Niners might not be good this year.
19:29I agree.
19:29And I just look at the first three, the games that Demarcus Robinson will miss,
19:33with the suspension now becoming official pre-1 o'clock.
19:36So he's out until week four.
19:38I think that the game at Seattle is going to be a lot of two tight ends, a lot of two running backs,
19:44and it's going to be a lot of smash mouth in both directions.
19:47Seattle's got a good running game, and the Niners are going to try to impose their will.
19:51At the Saints in week two, I mean, if not having Ayuk and maybe Juwan, and we don't know about Juwan,
19:58but you should be able to beat them with Gage and Chosen and Pearsall
20:02and whoever else you want to roll out to beat the Saints.
20:05You were funny earlier on our show thread, you just sent a picture of a tank.
20:10Yeah.
20:10And I was like, at first I was like, all right, and then I was like, oh, he's implying that the Saints are tanking.
20:15Yes, correct.
20:16They would like Arch Manning to be their quarterback next year.
20:19Well, he's not going to be their quarterback.
20:21Probably not.
20:22You know, he's going to say, no, thank you.
20:23His grandpa's been through it.
20:25His grandpa was there, and he got the tar beat out of him when he was a Saint back in the 70s.
20:29Yeah, that's a long time ago.
20:31It was, but it was just interesting because I don't think the Saints are tanking.
20:35I just think they're terrible.
20:37And it's a fine line between the two.
20:39Yeah, I mean, the tanking.
20:40Like, again, I think at a certain point you're smart in this league
20:43when you don't have a clear answer at quarterback
20:48and you're not in love with options that you have in the draft,
20:52then kick the can down the road.
20:54Don't force it.
20:55Don't be like, let's go get Aaron Rodgers.
20:58No, no.
20:59Give a Spencer Rattler and give yourself a shot at the first or second or third pick next year
21:05where you could actually get someone that you can build around.
21:07So it's not a tank.
21:09It's more just like, oh, willfully losing.
21:12Sure, we'll get you next time.
21:14Interesting about that because the Jags, the week four opponent,
21:16they don't have their first-round pick next year.
21:19They traded it to Cleveland to move up to pick up Travis Hunter.
21:22So, you know, the Jags are all in on their quarterback.
21:25That's week four.
21:26Robinson back for that.
21:27And so I'm with you.
21:29If you get to, let's just call it week 10.
21:31If Iyuk is ready after week six or seven, but it takes him a couple weeks to wrap up,
21:36you get to week 10.
21:37Jawan's settled his contract.
21:39Pearsall is now in the heart of a first real NFL year.
21:44And you've got, you know.
21:46Demarcus Robinson.
21:46He's back.
21:47And then there's questions of like, you know, maybe.
21:49Cowling or Watkins.
21:50And they really like Watkins.
21:52Maybe he's able to do some things.
21:54But you've got that depth that you're talking about.
21:56And it had me thinking a little bit about the Giants rotation this year
21:59where you had all this depth.
22:00And then you traded two starters.
22:02I mean, Jordan Hicks, Adios Pelota, and Kyle Harrison immediately into AAA.
22:08But then you had some injuries in your rotation.
22:10And now all of a sudden, your position of strength was now a position of weakness.
22:14Absolutely.
22:14So you don't want to do that if you're the Niners at receiver.
22:16That's all I'm saying.
22:17No doubt.
22:17No doubt.
