20 September - National weather forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Hello again.
00:01Travel disruption is possible in some places this evening due to flooding and in some areas
00:05there will be some very strong winds for a short period of time as well.
00:09It's all cosy of this area of low pressure, quickly scooting away into the North Sea,
00:12allowing high pressure to build as we go into Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
00:16So plenty of fine, dry and settled weather is on the way, but it will be chilly with
00:20some overnight frosts in places.
00:23Back to Saturday evening though, and it's parts of Wales and northern England where
00:26we're most concerned about some flooding.
00:28And persistent, the heavy rain here, especially across northwestern parts of England, so some
00:32travel disruption and flooding perhaps on the roads, a rainfall warning in place until the
00:37early hours of Sunday morning, but also some strong winds for a time as well, particularly
00:41for more North Sea coastal regions as that area of low pressure clears away.
00:45It will also be blustery across more northern areas, especially northern Scotland with those
00:49winds coming down from the north, so a pretty cold feel, bringing some showers, heavy at
00:54times, particularly into coastal regions.
00:57Most places though will turn quite a bit drier by the end of the night.
01:01Let's just focus in on those winds though, as we go through Saturday evening and into
01:04the early hours of Sunday.
01:05So gusts, well, gale force gusts into the inland areas, 50, maybe even 60 miles per hour in
01:11exposed spots too.
01:13And perhaps even stronger winds than that, just as the area of low pressure clears into
01:16the North Sea for parts of Lincolnshire and Norfolk, the Wash could even see gusts of 70
01:20miles per hour or more.
01:21So potentially some disruptions, some damage to trees with them still being in full leaf
01:26and something to keep a close eye on and do stay tuned to any weather warning updates.
01:31But as we go through the end of the night, it will start to turn cooler, those northerly
01:35winds arriving.
01:36So in any shelter from those winds across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland in rural areas,
01:40we could even see temperatures fall low enough for a touch of frost.
01:42And it will generally be a much cooler start to the day compared to on Saturday.
01:46But Sunday overall will be a lot drier compared to on Saturday.
01:51Many of us will see at least some sunshine.
01:52So a bright start to the day for central and southern Scotland, Northern England, those
01:57sunniest skies spreading their way southwards across southern and central parts of Wales
02:00and England through the day as well.
02:02So most of the showers by the afternoon confined to more coastal regions, but they will be fairly
02:06frequent across Northern Ireland and in particular Northern Scotland.
02:10Here, the winds will be fairly brisk right the way through the day.
02:13So it will feel pretty cold.
02:15And despite the sunshine in the south, temperatures will be well below average for the time of
02:19year.
02:20And it will feel considerably colder, particularly compared to on Friday, where we saw 27 degrees
02:25in the southeast.
02:27Now, when we factor in those strong winds on Sunday afternoon, northern parts of Scotland
02:31are going to feel more like just three or four degrees with gusts of up to 50 miles per
02:35hour.
02:36And even in the south, despite the thermometer perhaps reading 16 or 17 degrees, it will feel
02:40more like 11 or 12.
02:43Nonetheless, though, as we go through Sunday evening, those showers will tend to ease.
02:47The winds will also start to die down as well.
02:49So with those clearer skies, we are expecting temperatures to fall away fairly sharpish on
02:54Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday morning.
02:57A few coastal showers remaining, mainly in northern Scotland, perhaps also some clipping North Sea
03:02coastal regions, particularly East Anglia and Kent.
03:05But otherwise, a dry, clear and cold night to come.
03:08So widely, temperatures falling into single figures, even in the towns and the cities and
03:13in rural areas where we'll see a grass frost and perhaps temperatures even falling down
03:17to around freezing or just below in the most prone spots.
03:21What it does mean, though, underneath those clear skies is that Monday will dawn on a much
03:26brighter, sunnier note compared to on Sunday.
03:29And it's going to be a lovely day.
03:31Blue skies, water wall, sunshine for some western and southern areas.
03:35A bit more on the way of cloud at times across Scotland in particular.
03:38And some eastern areas will see the odd shower as well.
03:41But otherwise, apart from the odd shower here and there, a lot of places staying dry.
03:45And it won't feel quite as cold as Sunday will do because the winds will be lighter.
03:49So 15 to 17 degrees is still below average in the south.
03:53And 13s and 14s in the north will feel fairly cool.
03:56But as I say, the winds will be lighter.
