00:00For centuries, philosophers have been searching for an answer to one question.
00:04What is the secret of happiness?
00:06Today, we are going to look at some serious research and give some very useful tips inshaAllah,
00:11powerful life-changing tips.
00:13The secret of happiness has always been wondered.
00:15For thousands of years, philosophers have searched for the answer to this question.
00:19Countless books, countless articles have been written.
00:22Brilliant thinkers with extraordinary intellect have written works on this subject.
00:27But ironically, most of them could not even find happiness in their own lives.
00:32So what is the formula for happiness?
00:33Is there a clear answer?
00:35Countless claims have been put forward about the secret behind happiness.
00:39One of these claims is that happiness is directly proportional to the financial resources one
00:43possesses.
00:44The proponents of this claim think that a person is happy to the extent that he or she can
00:49afford a good health service and experiencing a lifestyle equipped with the technological
00:54luxury.
00:55Otherwise, they cannot solve their problems, they cannot find peace, they say.
00:59While this may sound good at first, this is not how it works.
01:03Of course, I know that financially being below average standards can also cause people to
01:08lose their peace of mind.
01:10But what I am trying to say here is that having all the financial resources does not guarantee
01:15happiness.
01:16There are thousands of people who can be used as an example to support this claim.
01:20For instance, Whitney Houston, American singer, who has the Guinness World Records as the most
01:26awarded female artist of all time.
01:30She has received two Emmy and six Grammy Awards.
01:33Both of them are prestigious awards, right?
01:36Also her albums have been sold more than 170 million copies.
01:39Who has received more than 410 awards and she had a superb career in her field.
01:46Strangely enough, who was at the peak of her career was found dead in her Beverly Hills suite,
01:51where she had been staying for a night before attending Grammy Awards ceremony.
01:55Investigations revealed that she had died from drug abuse.
01:59Despite having all the financial resources, she wasn't satisfied and she was seeking happiness
02:06by using drugs.
02:07Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the famous band Nirvana.
02:10Good looking, handsome guy at the peak of fame.
02:13Hundreds of thousands of young women screaming his name in admiration at his concerts.
02:19There was nothing he couldn't achieve in this world, but something was missing.
02:23So one day, he left a farewell letter to his wife and son.
02:27And he put a gun to his chest and ended his life.
02:31So these people had achieved everything in the world.
02:33It is as if they climbed to the top of Mount Everest at the peak of success.
02:38They're calling out to those of us who are trying to climb as if they're saying,
02:43I have come higher than you.
02:45I have come higher than you could ever imagine.
02:48There's money, fame, property, possessions.
02:51But I see that what we should look for is something else.
02:55The missing piece of the puzzle is not here.
02:58There must be something else, some other meaning.
03:00I remember Jim Carrey, the famous comedian, once said, I wish everyone could be rich and
03:04famous one day and have everything that they have ever imagined.
03:08So that they realize that that's not the real answer.
03:12Strange, right?
03:13Another fundamental concept is the hedonic adaptation.
03:16What does this mean?
03:17Humans tend to adapt to both good and bad circumstances.
03:21Therefore, after a while, they return to their previous level of happiness.
03:26Because of this, after three months of moving to a higher standard of living, people get
03:31used to it and start to feel how they felt before.
03:34So for people who get into Harvard University, the motivation of I got into Harvard only lasts
03:40for three months.
03:41And after three months, this achievement starts to feel quite normal.
03:45Imagine that you have been working for years and years and you finally earned the right
03:49to study at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
03:52But after three months, you feel exactly the same way as before.
03:56This is what hedonic adaptation is.
03:58This kind of adaptation applies to both positive situations and negative situations.
04:02When you receive bad news, there's a significant drop between the sorrow you feel at first and
04:08the sorrow you feel three months later.
04:10Allah has given us such a feature so that the effects of our sorrow will diminish over
04:15time and we can move on with our lives.
04:17On the other hand, what is the wisdom behind our joy is returning to normal after three months?
04:23It is to enable us to look for a different purpose.
04:26Or we get bored and turn our faces away from the temporary world and focus on what is eternal.
04:32Otherwise, we would become engrossed in worldly matters so much that we wouldn't even think
04:37of looking up at something else.
04:39We wouldn't think about an eternal life.
04:41Because of hedonic adaptation, even if you were Whitney Houston, Kurt Cobain, even if you
04:46are at the top in the worldly sense, after three months, it would feel normal to you.
04:52This was the reason that drove them to end their lives.
04:55At the top, where the word more means nothing anymore, they experience great dissatisfaction.
05:02Getting used to that high life standard with hedonic adaptation and feeling like a normal
05:07person takes away the joy of life.
05:10But of course, there are ways to get out of this paradox and break the cycle.
05:14So it's time to reveal the secret.
05:17This theory is called flow theory.
05:20Professor Mihail Csikszentmihalyi explained this theory as follows.
05:24When doing a task, focusing on it, diving into it, getting away from the things outside
05:31and entering into a flow where you do not realize how time passes.
05:36This was the short explanation of it.
05:38You know, sometimes this happens to us.
05:41You spend three or four hours on a task, but that period feels like 30 minutes for you.
05:47Time passes so fast when you enter the flow.
05:50Imagine you are in your favorite class.
05:51What happens?
05:52You get into the flow and that period feels much shorter than it really is.
05:56On the contrary, in the classes we do not like, for example, for me, it is the maths lesson.
06:02The lesson never ends.
06:0340 minutes feel like two hours.
06:06Not being able to enter the flow feels like a torment.
06:10To sum it up, Professor Mihail Csikszentmihalyi says, in your life, if you keep yourself busy
06:14with the things where you can get into the flow, you will be happy.
06:18The secret of happiness lies in following the things which take you into the flow and planning
06:23your life accordingly.
06:25However, since every individual has different choices, different tastes, and different hobbies,
06:30the activities in which a person enters the flow are also different.
06:34For some it is playing football, for some it is painting, for some it is studying astronomy.
06:40Imagine a maths class with 40 people.
06:43Time flows differently for everyone at the class.
06:46There are people in that class who don't understand maths and there are people who learn maths with
06:51passion.
06:52In that state of passion, in that state of flow, your emotions, imagination move away
06:58from where you physically are.
07:01Now the hands of the clock, the flow of time works differently for you than everyone else
07:06at the class.
07:07Let's imagine the opposite.
07:08What do you feel when you can't enter the flow?
07:11It is exactly how you feel when you can't understand the maths lesson.
07:15Or when you are in the company of people you don't like.
07:18Or when you have to sit and nod to the conversations you don't want to have.
07:23It is as if time has stopped.
07:25It doesn't pass and it brings unhappiness with it.
07:28I heard a saying which says, with an enemy, the desert is as small as a cup.
07:34But with a friend, a pinhole is as wide as a town square.
07:39By the time you enter 22 or 23, your school life ends and you start your career, a hustle
07:46in which you will have to work for the rest of your life.
07:49Maybe for 40 years, 50 years you are going to work.
07:52But we don't want to work for 50 years, do we?
07:56Imagine working in a job where you can't enter the flow for the rest of your life.
08:00Do you want to live a life where you wake up every morning to a day that you hate, with
08:06a traffic that you fed up with, or where you get in the company of people you don't like
08:10with a fake smile on your face?
08:12As Confucius said, choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.
08:19This sentence summarizes the entire flow theory concept.
08:23You might be thinking, what should I do now?
08:26Life didn't ask me where I want to work or what I want to do.
08:30I am forced to work in a job I don't like.
08:33At this point, you have two options.
08:35You can switch to a profession that you like and you keep your motivation high.
08:39Or you can set a goal that you can enter the flow in your current profession and you provide
08:45your motivation and flow in that way.
08:47You can also find a purpose outside of your workplace.
08:49It may be a hobby, something to aim for during the hours you are not working.
08:54Just keep in mind that having a motivating goal in mind is an important part of the flow
09:00theory.
09:01So the secret of happiness is to enter the flow.
09:04But there is a big issue that the people who came up with this theory missed.
09:07To understand this, we are going to take a look at three groups of people.
09:10First group.
09:11Atheists.
09:12Those who don't believe in a creator and think that there is nothing going to happen
09:17after death.
09:18They believe that they will perish after all.
09:20The second group.
09:21Muslims.
09:22Muslims who believe in Allah and the hereafter but don't live according to the values of
09:26Islam.
09:27Who choose to live with harams and do not practice Islam.
09:29The third group.
09:30They are pious, righteous Muslims who believe in Allah and the hereafter and live according
09:35to their belief.
09:36Let's come to the first group, atheists.
09:39The fundamental belief of this group is that they believe that they won't exist after
09:44death.
09:45Therefore, entering the flow becomes a disadvantage for them.
09:49Because when they enter the flow, time passes so fast, a 70 year life will feel like 20 years.
09:56So according to their belief, an atheist who enters the flow will perish from this world
10:01after 20 years.
10:02Every moment spent in the flow will move them faster towards nothingness.
10:07It's just like a car going at 30 kilometers per hour towards the cliff is now accelerating
10:12to 200 kilometers per hour.
10:15After learning this, an atheist may say, well, then I won't enter the flow.
10:20But in that case, time would slow down.
10:23They would get bored.
10:24They would be living a boring and tiring life that will feel like 300 years.
10:29They are at a loss in any case, it's a paradox for them.
10:33As for the second group, we are dealing with a Muslim who does not fulfill the obligatory
10:37duties and cannot resist the desires of his nafs.
10:40Of course, we all have mistakes, we are human, we make mistakes, we fall and we stand up again.
10:45The group I'm referring to here is made up of people who do not try to correct themselves,
10:50who do not care whether they sin, who do not regret and who do not repent.
10:55The bells are ringing for this group too because we understand from the Quran that if a person
11:01like this is not forgiven by Allah, there's painful punishment at the end of the road.
11:06Hell is not a place for which you can say, well, we will burn a little and eventually
11:11get out.
11:12It is not understandable that a person who cannot even hold his hand on the flame of a lighter
11:17for five seconds would take hell so lightly.
11:20What will happen if this group enters the flow in the world?
11:2470 years will feel like 20 years and they will reach the fire faster.
11:30Then should they enter the flow or not?
11:33It's a dilemma that knows the brain.
11:36Finally, the third group consists of the Muslims that we all pray to be.
11:41The Muslims who are committed to obeying Allah's commands and prohibitions, who strive to earn
11:46Allah's pleasure and who live in the halal circle and distance themselves from the harams.
11:52Muslims who fall into sin but get up with repentance and keep on walking.
11:56When this group of people enter the flow in their lives and live a life full of joy in
12:01the halal circle, their 70 years of life would be shortened.
12:05Instead of living 70 years in this world, they will feel like they lived for 20 years and
12:11will move on to an eternal realm so fast where sadness, sorrow will not face them.
12:19The most important thing we have understood so far is that it's not really possible to
12:24enter the flow without a great goal in mind.
12:26When you have a goal to reach, you can find the motivation to get up even if you fall on
12:32the way.
12:33So set yourself a high goal like being a good servant of Allah and walking towards the eternal
12:39realm.
12:40Otherwise, when people set temporary goals for themselves, they might lose their motivation
12:44by thinking that they will leave everything in this world.
12:48This will throw them out of the flow.
12:50Alhamdulillah, we have a beautiful religion that keeps our motivation even at the saddest
12:55moments.
12:56Ebu Hureyra radiallahu anh narrates, Prophet said,
13:01No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even
13:07though it were the prick he receives from atorn.
13:10Subhanallah.
13:11You suffer, you go crazy, you say, no one understands me but your sufferings atone for your sins so
13:19long as you don't rebel.
13:21Brother, remember one day your life will end and the things you did not do for the sake
13:27of Allah will be multiplied by zero and will disappear.
13:31But what you have done for Allah will pass on to the hereafter and become permanent.
13:37There will be a means for you to go to eternal heaven.
13:40So, living in the Helal circle, in the circle of faith, provides the motivation to heal
13:45all heartbreaks.
13:46According to Professor Mihail, it's not enough just to find the right occupation in which you
13:52get into the flow.
13:54Because if you do the same thing at the same level of difficulty all the time, you start
13:58to get bored with it and it becomes a habit.
14:00You must move to the next difficulty level so that your brain keeps the flow going by releasing
14:05the dopamine of discovering something new.
14:09For example, a game, Super Mario game you're playing.
14:12You entered the flow.
14:13If you play the first level over and over again, you will no longer have fun and exit the flow.
14:19As you pass the levels and stages, the fun you get out of the game increases and you enter
14:24the flow again.
14:25By the way, when you increase the difficulty, be careful.
14:29The goals should not be impossible to achieve.
14:31They should be reasonable, realistic goals.
14:34Otherwise failure will demotivate you.
14:36Let's open a new page in the flow theory, entering the flow in worship, which is the
14:41most beneficial part.
14:43For a believer, being in the flow to just achieve happiness cannot be the only goal.
14:48Otherwise the flow of time will send us into old age with a fast-lived life and pointless
14:54deeds.
14:55If you are living a life of worship, when you reach the age of 70, you say to yourself that,
15:03Alhamdulillah, my years were spent serving the Quran.
15:07I lived to earn Allah's pleasure.
15:09I struggled to fulfill the command of my Lord.
15:11They went by so fast that I didn't realize how they passed.
15:16Alhamdulillah, it hasn't been wasted in vain.
15:19All of them will come to fruition in the hereafter inshaAllah.
15:22I remember a man called Tawus al-Yamani, one of the great Imams of the Tabi'in.
15:28For 40 years, this person prayed Fecr with the same voodoo he had made for the Isha prayer.
15:36In other words, he continuously worships from Isha to Fecr.
15:41Is it possible to do this for 40 years without entering the flow?
15:45Of course he entered the flow.
15:46You might wonder how could he worship for 10 hours a day, for 40 years?
15:51Didn't he get bored?
15:53Actually, that time period is not that long.
15:56Because he entered the flow, it feels like 2 or 3 hours, not 10 hours.
16:02He wasn't feeling bored, but instead he spent that time feeling spiritually uplifted.
16:08By the way, Tawus al-Yamani is not the only man.
16:11There are thousands of people like Tawus al-Yamani.
16:13But then why aren't we praying like him?
16:16We even find it difficult to pray 5 times a day, which only takes 1 hour a day.
16:21Right?
16:21To explain this, let's use a phrase called the period of perseverance in worship.
16:27When we lack the determination required to meet the threshold of perseverance in worship,
16:32we cannot cross that point and move forward.
16:34At first, you find it difficult to read 2 pages of the Qur'an in a day.
16:38But then you raise your goal and decide to read 20 pages a day.
16:42Of course, you find it difficult at first.
16:44But when you persevere with patience in worship,
16:47when you force yourself to do it for a while,
16:50you realize that you can do it easily.
16:52After that, reading 2 pages of the Qur'an, which used to be difficult for you,
16:57is no longer difficult.
16:59Yes, at this point, you crossed the threshold.
17:02Just remember the first Tera'vi and the last Tera'vi, was that the same?
17:07So when you raise your level of patience in worship,
17:10even if it is a bit difficult at first, it becomes normal at the end.
17:14Remember, hedonic adaptation.
17:16The flow in worship is cold.
17:18Brothers, I can assure you that in 100 years, there won't be a single person who remembers your name.
17:25The feet inside the shoes you are using to step on the earth right now, it won't be yours.
17:30Someone else will be using it.
17:32You will pass from above to under, under the ground.
17:36Just as a seed goes under the earth and gives birth to a new life,
17:40so too will man go under the earth and begin a new life.
17:45We have to earn paradise.
17:47There's no other way.
17:48So today, let's add something to your life with which you can enter the flow in worship.
17:54But from now on, our theory is not called the flow theory.
17:58But rather, it's the theory of flow that flows into eternity.
18:02If we enter the flow in a good way, we won't wait for 40 years to die and enter Jenda.
18:08We will feel like 5 years because that we entered the flow.
18:11Let's say amin to these Dua brothers.
