Be patient with Dwight Yorke.

That's the message from CANOC secretary general Brian Lewis in spite of calls from some for the current T&T coach to be replaced.

This comes in the wake of a slow start to the final round of World Cup qualifiers, with T&T having just one point from two matches.

Lewis says the public always wants a quick fix instead of thinking long-term.

00:00Trinidad and Tobago's footballers have plenty of work to do if they want to
00:03qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With one draw and a loss so far, there are
00:10some calling for coach Dwight York to tender his resignation. Canucks Secretary
00:14General Brian Lewis is not one of them and feels that the former TNT player
00:19should be given a chance.
00:20The mistake is that we are always looking for a quick fix, a bandage, short-term
00:27solution. We don't commit to our proper structure and we look around and see that
00:38other teams that are successful have not just a short term but a medium to long
00:46term planning framework. Prior to York, Angus Eve was the man at the helm but in
00:52came York in November 2024 as the replacement which means he's not even
00:57made a year as TNT coach.
00:59I believe that the level that Dwight York has achieved as a professional player, while
01:04that is no guarantee of success as a coach, I believe that there's a real opportunity
01:12here that the lessons that Dwight York would have learnt could inform his improvement and development
01:24going forward. I genuinely believe that while we are hopeful of qualifying for 2026 from a comprehensive
01:36planning perspective, we should also draw an eye on 2030.
01:43Speaking of which, Lewis was not pleased with the decision to remove Eve in the first place.
01:49But it is what it is and Lewis hopes that the public can support the incumbent coach
01:54instead of chopping and changing.
01:56In the past, coaches have been fired that maybe would not have been fired. Their firing would
02:02have been premature. Whether it is Stephen Hart, Angus Eve and even at the various other levels,
02:10not just the national senior football team.
02:16Lewis says people must take into consideration that York was given a difficult challenge and he willingly accepted the job.
02:24Added to that, he feels national coaches in the past were given insufficient resources to prepare the team.
02:31The calls for Dwight York to be fired or to be forced to resign is making Dwight York a scapegoat.
02:41When Dwight York and our coaches weren't the problems, why we may not have been achieving the kind of objectives that we deeply desire.
02:51TNT have four World Cup qualifiers remaining, with the next one taking place on October 10th in Bermuda.
