00:02:55Still gets you, doesn't it, darling?
00:02:58Like nothing's ever got me before.
00:03:00New York to Paris in 36 hours.
00:03:02Someday we'll all travel that way.
00:03:04You should have had him fly you to Shanghai.
00:03:05Then he wouldn't have been late.
00:03:06You said it.
00:03:07He'd have made it in four days in San Francisco instead of 40.
00:03:20Hiya, Jim.
00:03:21Hello, Dave.
00:03:23Have a pleasant trip?
00:03:24Well, I saw plenty of water.
00:03:25Otherwise, flop off.
00:03:26I know.
00:03:27We should have started sooner.
00:03:28I offered to get out and push, but the skipper said it wouldn't help any.
00:03:30Well, there's no use crying over spilled milk.
00:03:32Here's the file on De Barris in Rio.
00:03:34Look it over.
00:03:35Maybe we'll have better luck next time.
00:03:37There isn't going to be any next time.
00:03:39What?
00:03:40Jim, maybe I'm Daffy.
00:03:42But I just saw a kid airmail pilot from St. Louis.
00:03:45He flew from here to Paris alone, nonstop.
00:03:48He rode up the street this afternoon.
00:03:51Did you see him?
00:03:52He had a rabbit's foot or he'd have never made it.
00:03:56What's that to do with you?
00:03:57It's got plenty to do with me.
00:03:58If he can do it, other planes can do it.
00:03:59On regular service, too.
00:04:00Better not talk like that in public.
00:04:01People will laugh at you.
00:04:02All right, let them laugh.
00:04:03That won't stop it.
00:04:04Are you crazy?
00:04:05In anything but clear weather, the male planes have a tough time getting from here to Cleveland.
00:04:08No, it's going to be tough, all right.
00:04:09But that won't stop it either.
00:04:11Well, we're back to that again, eh?
00:04:12Dave Logan wants to toss away a steady job and hitch himself to a kite.
00:04:16Hitch himself to it and fly it.
00:04:18Listen, Dave, you've got a swell future here.
00:04:20If you only get flying out of your system and concentrate on business, you flew during
00:04:24the war.
00:04:24That's swell, patriotic and all that.
00:04:26But the war ended nine years ago.
00:04:28Flying will never get anywhere.
00:04:29It's no good.
00:04:30It's too dangerous.
00:04:31You're nuts.
00:04:32Listen, Dave, I was thinking of promoting you to Olsen's place.
00:04:36That means a raise in salary.
00:04:37No, Jim, thanks.
00:04:39It's no go.
00:04:40I took this job because I had to make a living.
00:04:43It was swell of you to give it to me, too.
00:04:46But my heart's not in this office.
00:04:48Never has been.
00:04:50It's out there.
00:04:51You know, you still have Gene to look after.
00:04:53I realize that, Jim, but don't you see Lindy's fight is going to start the ball rolling.
00:04:57Commercial flying will have a chance.
00:04:58You sound as though you believe it.
00:05:00Well, I'm not going to try and influence you.
00:05:01Your life, not mine.
00:05:03You've figured out the angles.
00:05:04If you've made up your mind, what more can I do?
00:05:05Yep.
00:05:06When a man believes in something, that's what he ought to do.
00:05:09I believe aviation's going someplace.
00:05:10When it gets there, I want to be with it.
00:05:12I hope you're all in one piece.
00:05:13I kind of hope so myself.
00:05:15I hate to have you leave.
00:05:16I appreciate that, Jim.
00:05:17You change your mind to want someone to say, I told you so.
00:05:20Come and see me.
00:05:21I'll do that, too.
00:05:22So long, fella.
00:05:23Goodbye, Dave.
00:05:24Good luck to you.
00:05:25Thanks.
00:05:32Come on, Skip.
00:05:32Let's go.
00:05:34Goodbye, Edie.
00:05:34Goodbye, Dave.
00:05:36Was he mad?
00:05:37No, he was swell.
00:05:38Oh, I'm glad.
00:05:39I was afraid you were going to lose your job.
00:05:41You were?
00:05:41Yeah.
00:05:41Well, I did.
00:05:42What?
00:05:43I think I quit.
00:05:44But, darling, why on earth?
00:05:46Did you go back into flying?
00:05:47Oh, Dave, you said yourself it was dangerous and uncertain.
00:05:50Look at Al Greg and his wife barnstorming around, never sure of a job.
00:05:53Skippy, will you stop worrying?
00:05:54Everything's going to be all right.
00:05:55Everything's going to be all right.
00:05:56The rent's paid to the first.
00:05:58Then what do we do?
00:05:58We start to worry on the second.
00:05:59Logan, you talked me into starting this airline to advertise the sesquicentennial exposition.
00:06:20That's over.
00:06:21You also had a notion that it might make money after the fare on a regular run.
00:06:26Well, there's no argument.
00:06:28We lost $98,000.
00:06:30How many passengers did you just bring in from Washington?
00:06:34None.
00:06:35But give us a few more months.
00:06:37Things are bound to get better.
00:06:38I've been hearing that for a long time.
00:06:41We've been having a run of bad weather.
00:06:42Cut down our revenue.
00:06:43I'm figuring on a new plane.
00:06:45To cost no more than those we have, but to carry it twice as many passengers.
00:06:49Well, you might build one to carry half as many and still not crowd us.
00:06:52I'm sorry, but my mind's made up.
00:06:54Work like dogs to make this airline go.
00:06:56We haven't had a single crash.
00:06:57We've got a future.
00:06:58Instead of giving up, we ought to expand.
00:06:59Go after mail and express contracts.
00:07:01And lose more money.
00:07:02You can't out-talk those figures.
00:07:04Don't decide too quickly, Mr. Hill.
00:07:05Give us a chance, will you?
00:07:06We'll take a salary cut.
00:07:07We'll do anything.
00:07:07New aviators are swell people, but you're too visionary, too friendly, too easygoing.
00:07:12You're daydreamers instead of go-getters.
00:07:14In a way, you're sort of crazy.
00:07:16You're not satisfied to live for flying.
00:07:18No.
00:07:18You've got to be in love with it.
00:07:19Well, this airline is a business.
00:07:21In business, you've got to be hard, ruthless, and drive ahead.
00:07:23That's what we're trying to do is drive ahead.
00:07:25We can't stop now.
00:07:27We've already stopped.
00:07:29I sold those planes this morning.
00:07:30We closed the line this afternoon.
00:07:32They have your final checks in my office.
00:07:35Goodbye.
00:07:37Charming guy.
00:07:43Yeah.
00:07:53Jim, what's the matter with everybody?
00:07:55What are you all so low about?
00:07:56We're still breathing.
00:07:57Yeah.
00:07:59Barely.
00:08:00Well, I'm glad Tom lost his job.
00:08:02Now maybe we'll get a chance to get married.
00:08:05That's all you think about.
00:08:06Well, and why shouldn't I?
00:08:08What's wrong with it?
00:08:10Marriage is a great institution.
00:08:12Who wants to live in an institution?
00:08:14What do you plan to do, Dave?
00:08:16Oh, I don't know, Skippy.
00:08:18We'll figure out something.
00:08:19Don't worry, dear.
00:08:20They'll find a way.
00:08:22Should have known that Philadelphia to Washington
00:08:23was too short a hop to make money.
00:08:26We were too anxious to get started and forgot that.
00:08:29Dave?
00:08:29Yes?
00:08:30I think I've got something.
00:08:31It won't be as large a ship as we've talked about.
00:08:34But it's a start.
00:08:36Anyway, it's as big as we dare to be.
00:08:38Passengers like company.
00:08:40This should be a flying boat.
00:08:42Seaworthy.
00:08:43Something like this.
00:08:44Tailed high out of the water.
00:08:46Should have two engines, but capable of flying with one.
00:08:48Well, how about retractable wheels?
00:08:50It'll be good for landing fields or water.
00:08:52That's better still.
00:08:53That's the queerest looking crate I ever saw.
00:08:55What makes you think it'll fly?
00:08:57It'll fly all right.
00:08:59Someday you'll prove it.
00:09:00If I do, I should have my head examined.
00:09:05Well, it's fine, Dave.
00:09:06We can't fly the tablecloth.
00:09:08We've got to get started.
00:09:09And the question is when, how, and where.
00:09:11You'll have to leave me out of there.
00:09:14Leave you out?
00:09:16Well, aren't you going to be with us?
00:09:17Oh, of course.
00:09:18Of course.
00:09:19I'll get some engineers and draftsmen started on this.
00:09:21And perhaps we can start a small factory under our own supervision.
00:09:24But you two boys must start a new airline.
00:09:27That's your problem.
00:09:28Well, we can't run a factory and an airline, too.
00:09:31Maybe those people in Bridgeport will tackle it.
00:09:34What do you say, Tom?
00:09:35I say, okay.
00:09:36Good.
00:09:37Wait a minute.
00:09:37Bring me that check, will you, please?
00:09:38Let's shove off.
00:09:40Thank you.
00:09:42Now, that's on.
00:09:42We're partners.
00:09:43You bet.
00:09:45Here.
00:09:47Hey.
00:09:47Come on, Skippy.
00:09:53You know, honey.
00:09:57Dad's got the answer.
00:09:59A flying boat.
00:10:02Are you really going to start another airline?
00:10:04Sure I am.
00:10:06Why?
00:10:07You failed once.
00:10:07I thought maybe you'd go back to work for Jim Horne.
00:10:10Darling, do you ever hear about the square peg in the round hole?
00:10:12Sure.
00:10:13Sure.
00:10:15You're not the only one who feels they don't fit in certain surroundings.
00:10:21Oh, gee, Skippy.
00:10:22I don't blame you for being fed up with these hotels.
00:10:24But it won't always be like this.
00:10:27We're going places.
00:10:28You don't blame me for wanting a home of my own, either, do you?
00:10:31Or wanting to see my husband the way other wives do, instead of just at odd moments.
00:10:35No, I guess I don't.
00:10:36But we'll have all those things.
00:10:39Just stop worrying.
00:10:40Don't you see?
00:10:41It isn't living in places like this.
00:10:43If I could only make myself believe in what you're trying to do, nothing would matter.
00:10:48Nothing.
00:10:49But, darling, I'm...
00:10:49No, let me finish.
00:10:51I'm not being selfish, Dave.
00:10:53But I've got to be honest.
00:10:55I just can't go on pretending an interest in things I can't believe.
00:10:58And if I can't believe in them, well...
00:11:01I don't see no use going on.
00:11:04It's not fair to either of us.
00:11:08No, Dave, you're...
00:11:09You're heading for something I...
00:11:11I just can't see.
00:11:14You're changing.
00:11:17I'm frightened.
00:11:19Oh, Skippy, there's nothing to be frightened about.
00:11:22I think I'll go back to New York.
00:11:24New York, why?
00:11:26Get a job.
00:11:28Oh, honey.
00:11:31You can't do that.
00:11:34Why not?
00:11:36Well, because...
00:11:38Because I love you, Gene.
00:11:43I need you.
00:11:45Sweetheart, I've got to go ahead.
00:11:48Maybe I don't understand, but that shouldn't change us.
00:11:50We're still the same two people.
00:11:51Skippy, try and not be hurt if I forget to be sweet to you sometimes.
00:12:00Oh, gee, I know it's been tough on you.
00:12:03But if you'll just wait, everything will be worthwhile, Skip.
00:12:08And forget this foolishness about going back to New York.
00:12:12But you didn't mean that, did you?
00:12:13You were only kidding, weren't you?
00:12:18Tell me you were only kidding.
00:12:20Sure.
00:12:22I was only kidding.
00:12:23Won't be long now, Tom.
00:12:49You can get more mileage on a cup of black coffee than anyone I ever knew.
00:12:56Logan.
00:12:57Come here.
00:12:57You got a lot of nerve trying to start an airline over water with a land ship.
00:13:04Well, it's perfectly safe to fly.
00:13:06The post office department gave us the opportunity to carry the mail.
00:13:09We told Cuba we'd get it across.
00:13:10Well, the post office department may hand out mail contracts,
00:13:13but the Department of Commerce licenses ships.
00:13:15We've been warned that dizzy aviation is out.
00:13:18As far as I'm concerned, this ship stays on the ground.
00:13:20Hey, listen.
00:13:26You're a pilot, aren't you?
00:13:27Yes.
00:13:28Well, look, fella.
00:13:30We got down on our knees to get a chance to fly this run.
00:13:33Now, if we don't leave on schedule, we may not get this contract,
00:13:35and we won't be able to fly the mail, and we're sunk.
00:13:37Key West to Havana is only 90 miles.
00:13:39An easy flight, and this is just a beginning.
00:13:42Well, you have to have seaplanes for this sort of work.
00:13:44I thought you said you were going to have one.
00:13:46The first one's under construction now, but it takes time.
00:13:49Now, listen, you can't hold up that plane.
00:13:51You've got to give us a license.
00:13:54The air commerce law wants to help aviation, not hinder it.
00:13:57We've got a chance to get someplace, and you people...
00:13:59You're tired and worn out.
00:14:00You haven't been to sleep for nearly a week.
00:14:02It's after midnight.
00:14:02Why don't you let this go till tomorrow?
00:14:04Oh, for the love of Pete Jean, don't interrupt.
00:14:06This is none of your business.
00:14:07What are you butting in for?
00:14:08Now, go on home, and I'll join you later.
00:14:10Now, listen, be reasonable, will you?
00:14:12We've borrowed from everybody we know.
00:14:14We've hocked our shirts and our souls.
00:14:16This may mean everything in the world to us.
00:14:18Now, if you're a pilot at heart, you won't ground that ship.
00:14:22Well, you fellas make some pretty speeches.
00:14:25You appeal to my better nature.
00:14:27I'm not one to stop the wheels of progress.
00:14:29I'll give you a break this time.
00:14:31Go ahead.
00:14:31You'll get your license in the morning.
00:14:32Thanks, babe.
00:14:33Okay.
00:14:33Dad, you've got to get those ships out in a hurry.
00:14:35You go to New York tomorrow and fly that second plane down.
00:14:37Okay, boss.
00:14:37Leave as soon as Lane takes off and don't waste any time.
00:14:39Come on, get going.
00:14:40Mr. Logan.
00:14:40Yeah.
00:14:40I don't believe I want to fly that plane to Havana.
00:14:43Are you kidding?
00:14:44You flew at five hours yesterday, qualifying.
00:14:47Sure, sure.
00:14:47But that was around the bay.
00:14:49But if anything happens out over the straits, I'll be shark bait.
00:14:52What's the matter?
00:14:52Are you afraid?
00:14:53No, I'm not afraid, but I'm not sapping up to take foolish chances.
00:14:56All right.
00:14:57Tom doesn't like your flying anyway.
00:14:58I don't like your kisser.
00:14:59So long.
00:14:59I can stick around.
00:15:01I know.
00:15:02You'll go to New York.
00:15:03I'll make the hop to Havana.
00:15:04Come on.
00:15:04Let's knock on it.
00:15:06You know, Dave, it was that routine about the heart of a pilot that really got the inspector.
00:15:11Sure.
00:15:11I'm going to have that set to music.
00:15:13Hey, mister, what do you do when the wings fall off?
00:15:16Take a train, sucker.
00:15:19On the level, what do you do when the wings fall off, Dave?
00:15:23Ha!
00:15:26Oh, yeah, Mike.
00:15:27Glad to see you.
00:15:28I've had the whole country combed for you.
00:15:29Where you been?
00:15:30Oh, the usual.
00:15:31Barnstorming, footloose, drifting around, you know.
00:15:34I heard you were going to make some history down here tomorrow.
00:15:36Thought I'd come around and take a peek at it.
00:15:38Yeah, and I got great plans for you.
00:15:39You're practically hired as a pilot right now.
00:15:41Swell.
00:15:42When do I go to work?
00:15:43As soon as we qualify in this ship.
00:15:45Well, come on.
00:15:45Tell me about yourself.
00:15:46You know, I haven't seen you since the Armistice Ball at the Astor.
00:15:49Golly, has it been that long?
00:15:50Sure.
00:15:50Tell me you got married since then.
00:15:52Where's the wife?
00:15:54Well, she died, Dave.
00:15:55Four years ago.
00:15:57Oh.
00:15:57I'm sorry.
00:15:59I wish you'd known her, fella.
00:16:01She was swell people.
00:16:02Sure, I bet she was.
00:16:04Now, what about you?
00:16:05You still soloing?
00:16:07No.
00:16:07No, I finally got married.
00:16:09Sweetest kid in the world.
00:16:10Wait a minute.
00:16:10Boys, come on in here a minute.
00:16:13Meet our new pilot, Hap Stewart.
00:16:15This is Dad Braun.
00:16:16Tom Collins.
00:16:17How are you, folks?
00:16:17Hi, it's Hap.
00:16:18Why, Bill Andrews.
00:16:20Say, what is this?
00:16:21Old home week?
00:16:22How many more of the old-time war outfit have you got around here?
00:16:25Oh, you don't meet a lot of the old gang around here.
00:16:26How much more work, Dad?
00:16:27About an hour.
00:16:28Say, check on those tires now, will you?
00:16:30We're going home.
00:16:31Okay, Dave.
00:16:32Come on, kid.
00:16:32We'll go home and meet Skippy.
00:16:33Right.
00:16:33Anything wrong, Dave?
00:17:02Well, don't take it so hard, Dave.
00:17:13She'll be back.
00:17:15Everybody has bust-ups and squabbles.
00:17:17It's...
00:17:18It gives me great pleasure to address you on this, the most glorious moment in the history of Key West.
00:17:36The starting of this airline...
00:17:39Hello, darling.
00:17:41Where'd you come from?
00:17:43Philadelphia.
00:17:44You like my new outfit?
00:17:45Yeah, fine.
00:17:46Well, it's part of my true soul.
00:17:47Huh?
00:17:48Well, aren't you glad to see me?
00:17:50Well, certainly I'm glad.
00:17:52But I thought from your letters you were off me for life.
00:17:55Oh, I was.
00:17:56But I got over it.
00:17:57I'm funny that way.
00:17:59Well, it's great of you to be here, but I...
00:18:01I...
00:18:01But what?
00:18:02I'm leaving for New York right away in Dad's car.
00:18:05New York?
00:18:06Hmm.
00:18:13Ship ready to take off, Dave.
00:18:14They're waiting for you.
00:18:15All right.
00:18:17Oh, Dad.
00:18:18Yeah.
00:18:18That's what we're after.
00:18:217,000 miles of loop around the Caribbean.
00:18:23Yes, of course.
00:18:24The first 90 miles were the hardest.
00:18:26Let's get that ship to available before we start thinking about the rest of them.
00:18:30Oh, all right.
00:18:31Let's go.
00:18:34Then you won't take me?
00:18:35Honey, I can't take you.
00:18:36Come, Collins.
00:18:37I'm going back to Philadelphia and find me a boyfriend who'll pay some attention to me.
00:18:40And he won't be an aviator either.
00:18:43I never want to see you again as long as I live.
00:18:45And I mean it.
00:18:46Fly low and slow, sailor.
00:18:49Good luck, Dave.
00:18:50Hurry that plane down from New York.
00:18:51You keep those men on the job.
00:18:52Good luck, Dave.
00:18:53Good luck, Dave.
00:18:54Good luck, Dave.
00:18:55Good luck, Dave.
00:18:56Good luck, Dave.
00:18:57Good luck, Dave.
00:18:58Good luck, Dave.
00:18:59Good luck, Dave.
00:19:00Good luck, Dave.
00:19:01Good luck, Dave.
00:19:02Good luck, Dave.
00:19:03Good luck, Dave.
00:19:04Good luck, Dave.
00:19:05Good luck, Dave.
00:19:06Good luck, Dave.
00:19:07Good luck, Dave.
00:19:08Good luck, Dave.

00:19:17Good luck, Dave.
00:19:18Good luck, Dave.
00:19:19Good luck, Dave.
00:19:20Good luck.
00:19:21¡Gracias!
00:19:51¡Gracias!
00:19:53¡Gracias!
00:19:55¡Gracias!
00:20:16Gentlemen, you must realize that foreign air companies are making active plans to operate in South America, to extend their lines north to this country.
00:20:24We've advanced our regular service to Panama and Colombia.
00:20:28But if we don't act immediately,
00:20:30these foreign lines using fast steamships across the South Atlantic to Africa
00:20:34will take the business of South America away from the United States and swing it to Europe.
00:20:38Simply because they save time in placing orders and making rapid deliveries.
00:20:42Well, the Department of Commerce cannot provide airway, weather and radio facilities outside the United States.
00:20:48We can provide our own facilities.
00:20:50Do you realize that the necessary and detailed maps over the countries you propose to fly don't exist?
00:20:55We can make our own surveys and get our own maps.
00:20:58We've solved problems tougher than that before.
00:21:01Mr. Logan, you've done well in establishing an air service through the West Indies and to Panama.
00:21:06But this plan of yours calls for contractual relations with 27 different governments.
00:21:12And the State Department doesn't have that many with all the American nations.
00:21:15I know, but they're at least worth trying to get.
00:21:18Gentlemen, don't you see that a delay now would mean that an American airline would never have a chance in South America?
00:21:24Mr. Logan, I would suggest that you give the matter more thought. Work it out in greater detail.
00:21:31I see.
00:21:33Well, I guess there's nothing more to say.
00:21:36I'm afraid not at this time.
00:21:38Come back in a year or so and we'll discuss it further.
00:21:41Thank you, gentlemen.
00:21:43What did they say, Dave? How did you come out?
00:21:47Well, they weren't very encouraging, Dad.
00:21:49What did you do now?
00:21:51I'm going to Philadelphia and see Hill.
00:21:53Hill? He took a beating the last time. He won't bite again.
00:21:55The picture looks different to him now. You see, we're making money and he's in the business of lending money. He'll listen to the plan, all right?
00:21:59I think you're sticking your chin out, Dave.
00:22:01Pilots are poison to bankers. Can't you get help someplace else?
00:22:04No. The aviation, railway and steamship people have backed us as far as they can go.
00:22:08B.C. Hill is the answer.
00:22:14B.C. Hill is the answer.
00:22:37Order all radio and weather stations to maintain a constant watch.
00:22:41No seas maldito.
00:23:39¡Gracias!
00:24:09¡Gracias!
00:24:11¡Gracias!
00:24:13¡Gracias!
00:24:15¡Gracias!
00:24:17¡Gracias!
00:24:19¡Gracias!
00:24:21¡Gracias!
00:24:23¡Gracias!
00:24:25¡Gracias!
00:24:27¡Gracias!
00:24:29¡Gracias!
00:24:31¡Gracias!
00:24:33¡Gracias!
00:24:35¡Gracias!
00:24:37Mr. Logan,
00:24:39the American Red Cross and the Pan American Union presents this scroll.
00:24:44to your airway system.
00:24:48It is given for the splendid work done in relieving human sufferings during the recent hurricanes.
00:24:56You are instrumental in saving the lives of 28,000 people.
00:25:02As a result of this, and your daily work of international service,
00:25:07each and every one of your men has become, in our countries,
00:25:12a truly welcome representative of the American government.
00:25:16On behalf of the men in our organization, and myself, thank you.
00:25:30Our conception of things, and the running of our airlines,
00:25:34may seem a bit unusual to you all.
00:25:38At the time of the hurricanes,
00:25:42we thought we were only doing our jobs.
00:25:46We still think the same way.
00:25:58This scroll was signed by everybody with Buffalo Bill.
00:26:02Hap, this looks like an invitation to a lot of hard work.
00:26:05Yeah, I bet he's out buying the whip right now.
00:26:13Well, I'm on my way.
00:26:14Now listen, Dad, as chief engineer this outfit,
00:26:16you've got to force the development of a new long-range ship.
00:26:18Get busy on it right away.
00:26:19Hap, you and Tom have got to start a school to train pilots.
00:26:23I'll send you full instructions from New York.
00:26:25I'm going to handle the business end from there.
00:26:34Do you suppose that mug could have been giving us the double talk?
00:26:55Great.
00:26:59Hap.
00:27:00That was great.
00:27:01It's a big one.
00:27:03Good aleck, David.
00:27:04Yiana.
00:27:05Good aleck.
00:27:06Good aleck.
00:27:08Good aleck, David.
00:27:09Good aleck, David.
00:27:11Good aleck, He.
00:27:12And now we're going to do this right now.
00:27:13Good aleck, George.
00:27:15Good aleck.
00:27:16Nice to meet you.
00:27:17Good aleck.
00:27:18Good aleck.
00:27:19Thank you.
00:27:20Good aleck.
00:27:21Good aleck.
00:27:22Good aleck.
00:27:23My name is the only one.
00:27:24¡Gracias!
00:27:54¡Gracias!
00:28:24¡Gracias!
00:28:34At Pier 4, plane leaving for Nuevitas, Porto Prince, Santo Domingo, the West Indies, and Trinidad.
00:28:42Have your tickets ready. All aboard.
00:28:46You will thoroughly acquaint yourself with your engine and your plane,
00:28:49as you will be called upon to fill the position of any of your crew.
00:28:52Now, the Kingston de Barracay a run is 600 miles.
00:28:56When you finish this course, you will use that run to test method and material.
00:29:00Flying in good weather, bad, blind, or by instruments exactly the way you will fly the Pacific.
00:29:06Those of you who pass this course will have a great future in this organization.
00:29:11Those of you who don't, well, we don't want.
00:29:18That plane's worthless for what we have in mind.
00:29:20What?
00:29:21Why it's flown over a million miles without an accident.
00:29:24Not big enough.
00:29:25Won't fly far enough and fast enough.
00:29:27You're supposed to be designing a long-range job.
00:29:29Well, I am.
00:29:30Where is it? I haven't seen it.
00:29:31There are many problems to be solved yet.
00:29:33They won't solve themselves.
00:29:36Now, you've had plenty of time to get all the data you came down here for.
00:29:38You'd better get to New York.
00:29:39Get busy.
00:29:39What about you and Tom?
00:29:46You got those courses lined up?
00:29:47Practically.
00:29:48They're supposed to be finished today.
00:29:50Now, wait a minute, Dave.
00:29:51We both make a round trip to Barranquilla every week.
00:29:53We work on the ground here.
00:29:55I don't mind working at night, and neither does Tom, but I don't get any kick out of being
00:29:59balled out for it.
00:30:00I think you'd better forget about this school idea for a while.
00:30:03Why?
00:30:04Well, most of the pilots feel that there's no sense in learning a lot of stuff they'll
00:30:07never need.
00:30:07Who said they won't use it?
00:30:08You?
00:30:09Not exactly.
00:30:10They still think that flying the Pacific is a lot of hooey.
00:30:13Well, that's swell.
00:30:15When the men of your own outfit don't believe in you, you're supposed to keep those pilots
00:30:18in line.
00:30:18If you can't do it, I'll get somebody that can.
00:30:24His smile gets sweeter every day.
00:30:26Yeah.
00:30:33Hey, Bill.
00:30:43Come here.
00:30:50Finished with those engine tests?
00:30:52No, sir.
00:30:53We were busy last week, and I didn't get to it.
00:30:55It's supposed to have been done a month ago.
00:30:57Well, I know that, but I just didn't have time.
00:31:00All right.
00:31:00All right.
00:31:03I'm going to fire Andrews and put Lanning on the job.
00:31:08Well, now, wait a minute, Dave.
00:31:09You can't do that.
00:31:10Bill's one of the old gang.
00:31:11The job's gotten too big for him.
00:31:12I'll keep him on as a mechanic.
00:31:15And here's something for everybody.
00:31:17Whenever I assign you to a job, I want results, not excuses.
00:31:22Incidentally, what's wrong with you?
00:31:23Me?
00:31:25Not a thing.
00:31:26You're supposed to go through the mill with the rest of the pilots.
00:31:28Sorry, I'm not interested in scraping this gum off, pontoon.
00:31:31Well, you better get interested if you want to stay on here.
00:31:34Oh, that makes it simple.
00:31:36So long.
00:31:38Hey!
00:31:39Wait a minute.
00:31:42You walking out on this show?
00:31:43Sure.
00:31:44I cleaned my share of tanks years ago.
00:31:46I'm not going to start that all over again.
00:31:47Well, that's funny.
00:31:49You're the one I wanted with me on this deal.
00:31:50What's the matter with you?
00:31:51Oh, I like to drift around.
00:31:52I guess I've been here long enough.
00:31:53Don't stall.
00:31:54If you got something on your chest, spill it.
00:31:56Okay, sailor, here it is.
00:31:57You used to be regular, but now you're not even human.
00:32:00When you start canning guys like Bill Andrews that have been with the outfit for years, that proves it.
00:32:04You're letting your job turn you into a heel with a cast iron heart.
00:32:07You don't have to be tough just to show everybody you're a big shot.
00:32:10Somebody's got to be tough to get things done around here.
00:32:12Yeah, I knew that's what you'd say.
00:32:13Then you know it's the truth.
00:32:14Okay.
00:32:15Even if it is, I don't want any part of it.
00:32:17You've got a swell gang here.
00:32:18They made this airline, not you.
00:32:20But you won't have them if you keep going on the way you're going now.
00:32:23You can't get any ways with men by stepping on them with spikes in your shoes.
00:32:27All right, Hap.
00:32:29I at least expected understanding and loyalty from you.
00:32:32Well, don't give me that stuff about being a drifter.
00:32:34That's only a good excuse to get away from the dirty work.
00:32:36I didn't figure you as a quitter.
00:32:39Well, you get this.
00:32:40You don't quit this job, see?
00:32:42You're fired.
00:32:43Get out!
00:32:48How do you like living in New York?
00:32:55Oh, it was pretty lonely at first.
00:32:56But I've always loved the place.
00:32:57Don't you?
00:32:58How should I know?
00:33:00I haven't been here for ages.
00:33:01How's Dave?
00:33:02Dave?
00:33:03Oh, he's all right.
00:33:05Did you send me any message?
00:33:07I should say not.
00:33:08He doesn't even know I'm going to see you.
00:33:10He's living in New York half the time himself now.
00:33:12Got offices in the Dodd building.
00:33:13He has?
00:33:14Mm-hmm.
00:33:15Since when?
00:33:16Oh, he moved up a couple of months ago.
00:33:18Did you look me up just to tell me that?
00:33:20Oh, not exactly.
00:33:23Well, I just wondered how you were getting along.
00:33:25Stop stalling, Tom.
00:33:28Okay.
00:33:29Do you still love Dave?
00:33:30Sure.
00:33:31Why?
00:33:33Nothing's happened to him.
00:33:35Oh, no, nothing like that.
00:33:36No.
00:33:36I just don't exactly know how to tell you, but, well, I had an idea that you had an idea
00:33:45you two might get together again.
00:33:47Are you sure Dave didn't send you to see me?
00:33:50Oh, no, honest.
00:33:50He'd slit my throat if he knew about it.
00:33:53It's like this.
00:33:54Ever since you left, Dave's been davy on the subject of work.
00:33:58Not for himself alone, but for all of us.
00:34:00Day and night.
00:34:01Expanding the system.
00:34:03Chasing us into places in South America nobody ever heard of.
00:34:06Across jungles, over mountains.
00:34:10He isn't the same fellow he used to be.
00:34:12He's turned hard as nails.
00:34:15Dad and I were talking it over, and we thought maybe if you were to go back to him, he might
00:34:20be in his old self again.
00:34:22Then you wouldn't have to work so hard, huh?
00:34:24Oh, no, we weren't thinking of ourselves alone.
00:34:27But he acts so miserable.
00:34:29If you felt the same way, I...
00:34:32It all seemed so silly.
00:34:33Tom, do you really think I could help?
00:34:36I think he needs you, Gene.
00:34:39You take any man's mind off airplanes.
00:34:41No, I'm not so sure about that.
00:34:45Well, it's worth trying.
00:34:47When did you think it over?
00:34:49I've been doing just that for quite a long while.
00:34:51Anything else, Mr. Logan?
00:34:57Yes.
00:34:59Tell Alan I want those plans for our mid-ocean airbases this afternoon.
00:35:02Ask Wilson about those material lists.
00:35:04And get the specifications for the high-speed motorboats in the mail today.
00:35:09Yes.
00:35:10Mrs. Logan is here.
00:35:12Mrs. Logan?
00:35:14Sure, send her in.
00:35:15Well, tell Dad Brun to notify me as soon as they're ready for that wing test at the factory.
00:35:28Hello, Gene.
00:35:30Hello, Dave.
00:35:31How are you? What are you doing here?
00:35:32Well, I heard you moved to New York, so I thought I'd come and pay you a call.
00:35:36Oh, that's swell.
00:35:37Is that all, Mr. Logan?
00:35:39Yes, that'll be all. Thank you.
00:35:40Sit down, won't you?
00:35:47Well, seems like centuries since you and I saw each other.
00:35:51Memories of the Stone Age, eh?
00:35:53Will you have a cigarette?
00:35:54No, thanks.
00:35:56Well, Skip, tell me about yourself.
00:35:59What have you been doing?
00:36:00Oh, I'm one of Gordon and White's best secretaries.
00:36:03That's why you always return my checks, hmm?
00:36:05No.
00:36:06No, that's because I'd rather stand on my own feet than yours.
00:36:09Yes, I get it.
00:36:11Have you missed me?
00:36:12What do you think?
00:36:15Have you missed me?
00:36:16You'll never know how much.
00:36:23Yes?
00:36:24Mr. Collins is here.
00:36:25Oh, fine. Send him right in.
00:36:28You don't mind, do you, Gene?
00:36:30Tom's been having a little trouble down in Miami.
00:36:31Of course not. Shall I go?
00:36:32Certainly not. He'd be glad to see you.
00:36:36Hello, Dave.
00:36:37Hello, Tom. What's going on down there?
00:36:39Well, hello, stranger. How are you?
00:36:41Fine, thanks. How are you?
00:36:42Swell.
00:36:43Come on, spill it. What's wrong?
00:36:45Oh, but two of the pilots have quit the school.
00:36:46You let them go?
00:36:47I couldn't stop them.
00:36:49All right.
00:36:50If they quit the school, they can quit their jobs, too.
00:36:55That's all right with them.
00:36:56They'd rather take a chance working someplace else
00:36:58than spend all their spare time with their noses and books.
00:37:00What started this walkout?
00:37:01Well, most of them still feel the Trans-Pacific show is uncertain.
00:37:05Even if they do finish the school, they're not sure of a job.
00:37:08So that's what they feel, huh?
00:37:10Don't they think we're going ahead?
00:37:12No, and I don't blame them.
00:37:13What with an unreasonable boss, airmail cancellations,
00:37:17and doubt as to whether his license will be renewed,
00:37:19no pilot is sure of the future.
00:37:21So he lives for today.
00:37:23You ought to know that.
00:37:23We can't afford to lose those pilots, Tom.
00:37:30Can't afford it.
00:37:33We've got the greatest pilots in the world.
00:37:34They're costing us $100,000 apiece to train them.
00:37:37We've got to get them back.
00:37:39That's easy to say.
00:37:40No, I don't know.
00:37:42Maybe they're right.
00:37:44Maybe we should give them a better deal.
00:37:47They're spending years learning the things they have to know
00:37:49and gaining experience.
00:37:53I think I've got an idea.
00:37:58Tom, supposing we guarantee every man who qualifies for the big ships
00:38:00a professional rating, a career.
00:38:05No pilot in the country's ever had that.
00:38:06That's just the idea.
00:38:07We'll establish a precedent.
00:38:08We'll set up our own regular schedule of rank and promotion,
00:38:10help carry their insurance,
00:38:11give them an interest in the company.
00:38:13Then, when they're too old to pass the physical exams,
00:38:15we'll fit them into ground jobs.
00:38:16If we can assure them a ball of that when they go back to school...
00:38:18I don't know, but it's worth trying.
00:38:20That's your job.
00:38:20Go ahead and sell them the idea.
00:38:21Pick up the test and instruction work where you left off
00:38:23and keep the ball rolling.
00:38:24Right.
00:38:25Now, Tom.
00:38:27Yes?
00:38:32Listen, fellow.
00:38:33If I appear to froth at the mouth or fly off the handle,
00:38:36try and understand it, will you?
00:38:37There's so many things going on here that
00:38:39half the time I don't know whether I'm a foot or horseback.
00:38:42Don't worry about me getting sore, Dave.
00:38:44I know what you're up against.
00:38:45Thanks.
00:38:47Tom, do you remember the famous old ships
00:38:48that used to sail the Pacific and the China trade?
00:38:51China clippers?
00:38:51Yeah.
00:38:53China clippers.
00:38:56That's what we'll call our ships.
00:38:57Now, you get ready to fly the first one to China.
00:39:00Okay, Dave.
00:39:01Good luck.
00:39:01Thanks.
00:39:03Goodbye, Gene.
00:39:03Good luck.
00:39:04Thanks.
00:39:10Gas!
00:39:10Oh, all right, Dad.
00:39:12I'll be right out.
00:39:13We'll go over together.
00:39:17I'm sorry, Gene.
00:39:18I've got to go over to the factory.
00:39:19They're testing that wing for the big ship.
00:39:20Can't you spare a few minutes to talk to me?
00:39:24Well, yeah, sure.
00:39:25Dave, couldn't we try going back together again?
00:39:29What makes you think it'll work out any different now than it did before?
00:39:32Perhaps I was unreasonable before.
00:39:34We still love each other, don't we?
00:39:36You think you could be happy with me now?
00:39:37I've been awfully unhappy without you.
00:39:40You still feel the same way about flying and my job, don't you?
00:39:42Oh, no, Dave.
00:39:43Not the same.
00:39:43Not exactly.
00:39:44I...
00:39:44I know.
00:39:47No, Gene.
00:39:48You and, in fact, a lot of people think that just because we made a success, we've reached
00:39:56our goal, but we haven't.
00:39:58Let me tell you something.
00:39:59We haven't even started, and I feel the same way about this that I always have.
00:40:02But, Dave, I'm sure that...
00:40:03Gene, when you walked out of me in Key West, it was your own doing, not mine.
00:40:08No man thinks his wife thinks much of him if she leaves him.
00:40:12Consequently, I had to shut everything out of my life and go on alone.
00:40:15And the way you're leaving was the best thing that ever happened to me.
00:40:18It left me free to get things done.
00:40:20I didn't want to leave you, Dave, but I had to because...
00:40:23Because you didn't believe in me then.
00:40:26And I can't quite sell myself the idea you believe in me now.
00:40:30Nope.
00:40:32I'm going ahead with this until it goes over or it flops.
00:40:37Well, if that's the way you feel about it, I guess there's nothing more to say.
00:40:43Dave, do you remember when we were married?
00:40:44We were... we were happy then, weren't we?
00:40:51I never thought we'd get like this.
00:40:55Here we are.
00:40:58Well, will you...
00:40:59Will you kiss me goodbye?
00:41:00Yes?
00:41:14Oh, all right, Dad.
00:41:26Coming right out.
00:41:31Goodbye, Dave.
00:41:33Goodbye, Jean.
00:41:33Noah Gamport.
00:41:51Guess who?
00:41:52Mabel.
00:41:53Tom Collins.
00:41:54125th Fleet in the East River.
00:42:12Hey, what's the idea?
00:42:14You've increased the test load by 8%.
00:42:16Right.
00:42:1643 pounds a square foot?
00:42:19No wing will ever have to stand a strain like that, even in a typhoon.
00:42:23No plane this big was ever built.
00:42:25Our engineers in Washington believe in playing safe.
00:42:28If your engineers in Washington knew anything, they'd be designing planes instead of holding
00:42:33up other people with foolish restrictions.
00:42:35Don't you want us to build this plane?
00:42:37Sure.
00:42:37But when we okay as designed, that means that we guarantee the people that ride in it that
00:42:42it's safe.
00:42:43That's all, boys.
00:42:46Loads complete, Inspector.
00:42:4778 tons.
00:42:51That's more than three times the weight of the plane.
00:42:53That's more than three times the weight of the plane.
00:43:23Problems have got to be licked while the plane is still on paper.
00:43:25Now we've got to start all over again, and we've got to start right now.
00:43:28But you don't understand, Dave.
00:43:30A designer has to dream over his drawing board, thinking things out.
00:43:35I can do it, but you've got to give me more time.
00:43:39He's tired out.
00:43:40He works here all day, every day, and night after night, trying to give you what you want,
00:43:44and yet you insist upon more.
00:43:47I know that, Mother.
00:43:48I realize he's tired, but we're all tired.
00:43:52We're getting nowhere.
00:43:54We've got to drive ahead.
00:43:55We can't wait any longer, and those foreign lines will beat us.
00:43:59Dad, we've got to have that plane.
00:44:02Now, there must be some other expert airplane designers in this country.
00:44:05An injustice to ourselves.
00:44:06I've got to hear what they have to say.
00:44:09Oh, all right.
00:44:10If that's what you want.
00:44:11We need a four-engine flying boat with an average cruising speed of 120 to 150 knots an hour,
00:44:28using 60% of horsepower, with a full-load range of 3,500 miles, 36-day passengers, 24 sleeping passengers.
00:44:352,000 pounds of mail or express, and a crew of six.
00:44:39That plane will have a gross weight fully loaded of 26 tons.
00:44:42We expect our plane to take off on three of its four motors, and to maintain an altitude on two.
00:44:47Now, can any of you gentlemen design such a plane?
00:44:49Say, Mr. Bruin, didn't you have some idea about a giant plane?
00:44:55Yes, he did, but it didn't work out.
00:44:58I'm sorry.
00:44:59I'm sorry, Logan, but I don't believe any engineer has even conceived the sort of ship you seem to think would be a very easy matter to build.
00:45:05Further discussion is absolutely useful.
00:45:07Now, wait a minute, gentlemen.
00:45:08Wait a minute.
00:45:08Listen to me.
00:45:10The only reason that aviation has advanced this far is because that from the very start,
00:45:14a few people insisted on doing what others said was impossible.
00:45:17The Wright brothers, for instance.
00:45:19Blario, Curtis, Lindbergh.
00:45:21There have always been skeptics who said it can't be done.
00:45:24We have those today.
00:45:25But you men are part of aviation.
00:45:27You owe it to yourselves, to the industry, to go ahead.
00:45:30I know.
00:45:37You owe it to all.
00:45:37Thank you.
00:45:55Hello, Dave.
00:45:57Hello, Dad.
00:45:59Can I come in?
00:46:00Why, of course.
00:46:02Thanks.
00:46:07Dad, I've come to apologize.
00:46:17It was unfair of me to go outside our organization to carry out an idea that was originally yours.
00:46:22I might have known those other designers couldn't do the job, but I was...
00:46:25Well, I was desperate.
00:46:27That's all right, Dave.
00:46:30Dad, I know this idea means as much to you as it does to me.
00:46:34I wonder if you'll go ahead with it.
00:46:37I haven't stopped working.
00:46:40I might have known that.
00:46:41I've already redesigned the wing.
00:46:44You have?
00:46:45Why didn't you tell me?
00:46:46I haven't slept for a week.
00:46:48You've been pretty ruthless with all of us, Dave.
00:46:51I understand why.
00:46:53The others don't.
00:46:54So I thought if you had to come here and ask me to go ahead,
00:46:58perhaps you'd remember to ask other people who are working for you to do things instead of driving them.
00:47:03If necessary, I'll get down on my knees and apologize to every one of them.
00:47:07When do you finish?
00:47:09Well, it's control and stability that have me worried.
00:47:14You know, we can't exercise our terminal rights of the Orient unless we get there by November 30th.
00:47:18How long is it going to take you to figure it out?
00:47:19I don't know.
00:47:21But when this ship takes off, I want to be reasonably sure it's going to get where it's going.
00:47:26I won't take any step until I believe I'm right.
00:47:29Oh, you'll lick it, Dad.
00:47:30I know you will.
00:47:32I've got to get back to the office.
00:47:33Goodbye.
00:47:34Goodbye.
00:47:34Thanks.
00:47:35You say, don't forget to step on it.
00:47:43Well, doctor?
00:48:08My examinations show a very serious cardiac condition.
00:48:13Hmm.
00:48:15I was afraid of that.
00:48:17What do you advise me to do?
00:48:19There's nothing much you can do.
00:48:21Live quietly, easily.
00:48:23Avoid work and excitement.
00:48:25Avoid work?
00:48:26Altogether?
00:48:27Yes.
00:48:28But I have something very important to finish.
00:48:30I can't stop now.
00:48:32You must.
00:48:34Have I long, doctor?
00:48:35That's difficult to say.
00:48:38I want you to promise me you'll say nothing about this to anyone.
00:48:43Naturally.
00:48:44Thank you.
00:48:51Yes?
00:48:52Mr. Stewart would like to see you.
00:48:55Perhaps, Stewart?
00:48:58All right.
00:49:00Send them in.
00:49:05Hello, Dave.
00:49:07How are you?
00:49:08Well, what's on your mind?
00:49:12Oh, I know you're surprised to see me here, but I heard about that career system business
00:49:16you've worked out for your pilots.
00:49:18I think it's the finest thing that ever happened in flying.
00:49:20You do?
00:49:20Well, that makes two of us.
00:49:21Never mind the flowers, Hap.
00:49:23You haven't changed a bit, have you?
00:49:25And what I said down in Miami still goes.
00:49:28But what you've done about this thing got under my skin.
00:49:31Pilots made the flying game.
00:49:33Until you came along, when one of them cracked up or got too old to fly, he was tossed out
00:49:37in the street.
00:49:38You started something darn swell.
00:49:40Sure, and I intend to finish it, too.
00:49:42Is that all?
00:49:42No, that's not all.
00:49:44I want to hit the ball for the first outfit to give pilots a square deal.
00:49:48You know my experience.
00:49:50You know I can help.
00:49:51Well, what do you say?
00:49:52I say this.
00:49:56Are you willing to start from the bottom and go through the school?
00:49:58Certainly.
00:50:00All right.
00:50:02After you finish this course, I have a dangerous flying job, and it needs a man of your experience.
00:50:07You don't have to make a speech about it.
00:50:08I'll do the job.
00:50:10Go out and see Dad Brunn.
00:50:11Go on back to Miami.
00:50:12I'll send a wire to Tom Collins.
00:50:14That means I'm back in the books again.
00:50:16You were never off the books, slug.
00:50:18Boy, this one's a honey.
00:50:37The odds are ten to one you'll never get to Miami through this stuff.
00:50:40What's the idea of leaving, anyway?
00:50:42Well, it's this way.
00:50:44You ever hear of a Chinese monsoon?
00:50:45Sure.
00:50:46They're brothers to these hurricanes.
00:50:48We've got to know about them when we fly to the Pacific.
00:50:50Logan wants those new controls tested in his rough air.
00:50:54That's the job he sent me down here to do, and that's the job I'm going to do.
00:50:58And a lot of thanks you'll get.
00:50:59Radio Miami, I'm shoving off.
00:51:01So long.
00:51:02So long.
00:51:03So long.
00:51:18Miami calling App Stewart in plane seven.
00:51:46What do you hear from him?
00:51:50Haven't heard anything for seven hours.
00:51:51Seven hours?
00:51:52Miami calling App Stewart in plane seven.
00:51:55Well, he'll be all right.
00:51:56I'm not worried about it.
00:51:57I'm glad to hear that.
00:51:58There's no sense if it's both worried.
00:52:01Miami calling App Stewart in plane seven.
00:52:03Well, you're one of those controls tested in bad weather.
00:52:08He certainly picked a mess of it.
00:52:11Where was he when you last heard from him?
00:52:13Over Kingston.
00:52:14Number seven's here.
00:52:15He just flew over the hangar.
00:52:16He's heading down for a landing.
00:52:17Hey, good boy.
00:52:18I knew he'd make it.
00:52:19Come on out.
00:52:40Come on out.
00:52:41Come on out.
00:52:42We're glad to see you.
00:52:43Where have you been, you big lug?
00:52:44Hey, there were a couple of times last night when I was asking myself that question.
00:52:48Tough trip?
00:52:48No, not very.
00:52:49How does she handle it?
00:52:50Oh, baby, if she could only cook.
00:52:53I thought maybe you got scared up there and bailed out over the side.
00:52:56Hey, listen, I haven't been so scared since I was four years old and first saw the boogeyman.
00:53:01How are the controls?
00:53:03Why, she rides through rough air like a bucking bronco.
00:53:05A couple of times last night, I thought she'd gotten away from me.
00:53:08Those auxiliary balancing surfaces aren't half big enough.
00:53:11They ought to be relocated.
00:53:12Give me a full report on paper.
00:53:15Well, now that that's practically on paper, maybe we can get a couple of weeks fishing in.
00:53:21You can get more than a couple of weeks in.
00:53:22You're going to be at Midway Island.
00:53:23Huh?
00:53:24Establishing the mid-Pacific air bases.
00:53:26Air bases?
00:53:27We haven't finished our first plane.
00:53:28You take care of the plane.
00:53:29You look after the bases.
00:53:30Hear your instructions.
00:53:31Honolulu, Manila, and Grom will all have standard installations.
00:53:34Midway and Wake will start from scratch.
00:53:35You'll have to take everything with you.
00:53:37Radio and weather stations, power plant, machine shop, hotel for passengers, and all the rest of it.
00:53:40A chartered steamer will leave from San Francisco in about three weeks.
00:53:44You'll leave right away.
00:53:45I'm off for New York.
00:53:46What's happened to us?
00:53:51We used to be a couple of sensible pilots.
00:53:54Now we go to school.
00:53:56We go flying through hurricanes.
00:53:58We take a lot of equipment out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
00:54:01We've gone completely daffy.
00:54:03What are you gawking at?
00:54:08Nothing.
00:54:08I was just thinking how swell it would have been if he'd said thanks.
00:54:11There sure is enough work on the ground before we can get those planes in the air.
00:54:37Hey, do ghouly birds have teeth?
00:54:54Why?
00:54:55I was just wondering, that's all.
00:55:07I want to talk to you, Logan.
00:55:22Go ahead and talk.
00:55:23You've been spending money like water.
00:55:25Dad Brun's bills are $750,000.
00:55:28$800,000.
00:55:28And he hasn't even figured out where to carry gasoline in his plane.
00:55:31To finish your Pacific bases will cost twice that much.
00:55:34It looks to me like a mad impossible scramble against time.
00:55:36You can't be ready by November.
00:55:38That's what you think.
00:55:39Now we've applied for an extension of our landing concession in the Orient and been turned down.
00:55:44Foreign lines have everything else tied up.
00:55:46I want to show you something.
00:55:51With the British operating from London, the French from Paris and the Dutch from Amsterdam,
00:55:55with the British already in Singapore, the French in Saigon and the Dutch in Batavia,
00:56:00and now Russia taps in with the land across Siberia and from Hong Kong to Nanking.
00:56:04Don't you see it's hopeless?
00:56:05Why don't you stop now so we can salvage something out of the wreckage?
00:56:08Oh, we've been over this so often.
00:56:09Why don't you learn a new tune?
00:56:10Now don't get on your high horse.
00:56:12We can't establish a service across the Pacific without a Far East terminal,
00:56:15and we'll lose that November 30th.
00:56:17And then what good will your plane and your mid-Pacific bases be?
00:56:21Why don't you answer me?
00:56:22Oh, excuse me, sir.
00:56:25Well, Charlie, what is it?
00:56:27Well, I'm celebrating.
00:56:29Have a cigar.
00:56:30Have two cigars.
00:56:31We just had, or my wife just had twins.
00:56:33Congratulations.
00:56:34Twins, eh?
00:56:36Well, Charlie, that is something to be proud of.
00:56:38Thank you, sir.
00:56:39You know, we're having a baby, too.
00:56:42Only ours is a big airplane.
00:56:44Oh, congratulations to you, sir.
00:56:46Thank you, sir.
00:56:47Why don't you use your head, Dave?
00:56:52Now, I expect the aviator to crop out in you every now and then.
00:56:55But your attitude is getting more unreasonable every day.
00:56:57Now you won't even listen to me.
00:57:07Yes?
00:57:09All right, thank you.
00:57:10Now, look here.
00:57:10Now, wait a minute.
00:57:12I'll listen to you any time you have anything important to say.
00:57:14In the meantime, you get this.
00:57:16The directors as a board okayed this project,
00:57:18and I'm going to see it through regardless of you, your opinions, or anything else.
00:57:20You've had every chance to be sensible,
00:57:22but no, you plunge ahead like a crazy man.
00:57:24All I ask is that you stay away from me
00:57:26until this line goes over or it flops.
00:57:29Then I'll gladly step aside.
00:57:31I'll hold you to that.
00:57:32I don't doubt it.
00:57:45Dad, I think I got it.
00:57:59Our big problem is where to carry the fuel.
00:58:01Is that right?
00:58:01Yes.
00:58:03Our ocean liners carry their fuel in double bounds.
00:58:05Why couldn't we do the same thing?
00:58:06Well, it's never been done in a plane.
00:58:10No.
00:58:11But it's an idea.
00:58:13No tanks.
00:58:15No wasted space.
00:58:16Less weight.
00:58:17How did you ever think of double buttons?
00:58:20Well, you know Charlie, the janitor.
00:58:23Yes.
00:58:24His wife just had twins.
00:58:26Oh, I see.
00:58:27I had a cigar.
00:58:29Congratulations.
00:58:30Thanks.
00:58:31Thanks.

00:59:30Not later than tomorrow afternoon, if nothing happens.
00:59:32Nothing will happen. Dad, you better get some sleep.
00:59:34Oh, but listen.
00:59:35Go on now. Go home and get some rest.
00:59:38How is the flight west?
00:59:39Great. She's a beaut.
00:59:41I can't wait to take you to China.
00:59:42Tom, I've had a change of my plans.
00:59:44Hap will make the first flight.
00:59:46You'll have complete charge of operations here.
00:59:48We need somebody on the ground who knows more about flying in the weather than the skipper of the plane
00:59:51to keep it guarded and well-informed.
00:59:53Well, that isn't fair, Dave. I can run the office.
00:59:55Tom rates the first flight.
00:59:56It isn't a question of who knows what, who stays, or who goes.
00:59:59It's a question of putting each man in the job he's best suited for.
01:00:02If this line goes over, Tom will have plenty of chance to fly the Pacific.
01:00:05Oh, but Dave, he's...
01:00:05You men ought to realize something.
01:00:07A boss of a job like this has to make lots of decisions, whether he's right or wrong.
01:00:10If he's right half the time, he's lucky.
01:00:12Hap makes the flight.
01:00:14That's it.
01:00:14Go do it, Hap.
01:00:24Good luck.
01:00:25Well, thanks, kid.
01:00:25Bring me a complete weather report for the entire airway.
01:00:41Here it is, Dave.
01:00:45Gene.
01:00:47What are you doing here?
01:00:49I want to work with you.
01:00:51You want to work with me?
01:00:52Yes.
01:00:54Oh, Dave, during the past few months, I've thought of nothing but us.
01:00:57I've been miserable without you.
01:00:59And I thought if I could work with you, help you do the thing you're interested in,
01:01:03maybe we could get close to each other again.
01:01:06No.
01:01:08No, I can't mix personalities with business.
01:01:11Besides, my work has never meant anything to you.
01:01:14You learn a lot of things when you're lonely.
01:01:16It can't be done.
01:01:17You'd be in the way here.
01:01:19And half the time, I wouldn't know whether you were for me or against me.
01:01:23That's cruel.
01:01:24It may sound that way to you, Gene, but that's the way I feel about it.
01:01:28All right.
01:01:30Well, this is the way I feel about it.
01:01:32I applied to your personnel manager for a job, and he gave it to me.
01:01:35I'm not asking for favors from you or anyone else.
01:01:37I can handle this job.
01:01:39I need it, and what's more, I'm going to keep it.
01:01:41The success of this line depends upon the completion of this flight on schedule.
01:01:53That means you can't waste a day, not even an hour.
01:01:55Sleep en route if you can.
01:01:57At every stopping point, refuel just as soon as you land and take off, as soon as the plane is checked.
01:02:02Tom, all bases reported ready?
01:02:04Yes, sir.
01:02:05Weather data and position of all steamers that's here correct.
01:02:08Flight map and the ship checks with this one.
01:02:11Plane fully gassed, ready to take off?
01:02:12It's ready.
01:02:14Right.
01:02:15There's one other thing I must remind you of.
01:02:17Every landing in a strange harbor is a dangerous one.
01:02:21Should you hit anything that's floating in the water, the flight has ended right there.
01:02:26Now, this flight is scheduled by Alameda time.
01:02:30Run over your flight plans.
01:02:31Every man knows what he has to do.
01:02:33We'll fly each leg at an economical engine speed, deviating from the airway to miss local storms
01:02:38or take advantage of favorable winds.
01:02:40Reporting every half hour by radio.
01:02:43Alameda will send us weather and ship position changes every 30 minutes.
01:02:47In case of trouble, we'll head for the nearest ship of the nearest island for a forced landing.
01:02:51Right.
01:02:52Get going.
01:02:52Get going.

01:10:00Check the advanced weather and steamship positions. Keep the map up to the minute. Send half complete information.
01:10:04Tell them to take off for midway as soon as possible.
01:10:06What's the matter? Don't they eat in Honolulu?
01:10:08Never mind that. Go out and get your groceries and snap right back here.
01:10:10I'll bring you some chloroform.
01:10:12Quiet, quiet. The China Clipper has just landed in Honolulu.

01:12:00How soon he can take off.
01:12:20Hello, Hap. Welcome to Midway Island.
01:12:35How's the ship?
01:12:36Perfect. We need 1,300 gallons of gas.
01:12:38Right.
01:12:38How about those personal things we ordered?
01:12:40Where am I supposed to take them?
01:12:40Oh, wait a minute. Sure, sure, we brought it all.
01:12:42What if we got our order?
01:12:43No, we got nothing for you.
01:12:45Nothing for us. We're allowed 40 pounds apiece.
01:12:4740 pounds of what? What did you put in for?
01:12:49Well, three of us put in for a 120-pound blonde.
01:12:52Where is she?
01:12:55Come on, Tom. Come on, Harry. Let's hear it.
01:12:57We're going to see you, Jerry.

01:18:55Get him started, Tom.
01:19:00Well, go on, get him started.
01:19:05You put me in charge of operations,
01:19:07and you put Hap in charge of the flight.
01:19:09It's my job to give Hap all the information I can get,
01:19:12and it's his job to make decisions, not yours.
01:19:14That's the way you organize this show,
01:19:16and, brother, that's the way it's got to be run.
01:19:18Why, you...
01:19:18What's the matter with you, Dave?
01:19:20What's happened to you?
01:19:22We all started this show together from scratch.
01:19:25You and...
01:19:26Dad...
01:19:27Hap and myself.
01:19:29We shot for the moon and almost made it.
01:19:32What if the clipper doesn't get to China?
01:19:34Oh, but don't you realize, Tom,
01:19:35the only reason I'm trying to push through this flight is for Dad,
01:19:38so he'll have left something behind him,
01:19:40and then all he fought and lived for won't be thrown away.
01:19:43He'll be remembered as long as there's ships to fly.
01:19:50Mother, don't you think he'd have wanted it?
01:19:58No, Dave.
01:19:59Please.
01:19:59Look here.
01:20:16Are you going to stop that flight from going on to China?
01:20:20Yes, I'm going to stop the flight.
01:20:22You're the boss of this show.
01:20:23You know what that means?
01:20:23Yes, I know what it means.
01:20:24I was the boss of the show.
01:20:27I found out that it's big enough to carry on without me.
01:20:30I haven't any right to take chances over other men's lives.
01:20:33All right, Tom.
01:20:36Tell Hap to stay in Manila till he feels it's safe enough to leave.
01:20:40Okay, Dave.

01:20:57Stewart.
01:21:12Pretty tough already.
01:21:14What'll it be like when we're hitting that typhoon?
01:21:16You'll find out.
01:21:18Leave them at full power.
01:21:24We'll need it.
01:21:28Yes, sir.
01:21:29What's our ground speed?
01:21:3050, sir.
01:21:31Well, we'll try it in another 15 minutes.
01:21:33We can still make it back to Manila.
01:21:35Yes, sir.
01:21:43I've seen a lot of typhoons with this tough some more.
01:21:46I hope it's the worst I ever see.
01:21:48I hope it's the worst I ever see.
01:22:16Watch the temperatures. I'm opening up.
01:22:24We're going through.
01:22:35Been bucking that weather for seven hours now.
01:22:37He's got 250 miles to go and three hours to make it in.
01:22:39He ought to be out of that low-pressure area by now.
