00:00Wrapping up the Rockwell France Cale Grand Prix
00:02here in Saint-Tropez, unfortunately bad weather
00:04meant that there was only one day of racing
00:06but that day was action-packed
00:08to say the least. Emirates GBR
00:10and Dylan Fletcher won the event which means they've got
00:12great momentum going into the next two
00:14events in Geneva and Cadiz before
00:16our winner takes all grand final in Abu Dhabi
00:18but it's now very difficult for certain
00:20teams like the France LGB
00:22team and Northstar Canada to make the
00:24grand final which leaves us with four teams
00:26Los Gaios of Spain,
00:28the New Zealand Black Foils,
00:30the Australia Bonds Flying Roos
00:32and Emirates GBR. Lisa,
00:34it's been an incredible event for GBR, right?
00:36Yeah, I think for them they've had a bit of an up
00:38and down season but you really want that momentum
00:40going to the pointy end of the season.
00:42Obviously we didn't expect day two to be cancelled
00:44so for them to have such a good day on the water
00:46I think especially that last race, they stole that
00:48race win, you know, that one point meant the difference
00:50and we know every point counts in SailGP.
00:52If we're looking at highlights CJ, what was your
00:54highlights of the weekend? Oh, there
00:56are so many good ones to choose from
00:58but for me watching Red Bull Italy
01:00take that race win had
01:02to have been the best moment. I think I got chicken skin
01:04because I think it's so cool
01:06to watch a brand new team
01:08join the league and just take a race
01:10win. I mean, it's so difficult
01:12to just go up against teams
01:14like Australia, New Zealand
01:16who have been on SailGP since its
01:18inception and take
01:20that win. It just goes to show that
01:22all the hard work, possibly
01:24the talent of Kyle Langford
01:26pays off and I think that's really inspiring
01:28for future teams coming in.
01:30It was an incredible win to see but now we're talking about
01:32the lowlights of the weekend, Lisa.
01:34What were the lowlights? Oh, I get the good one.
01:36I mean the lowlight is obviously
01:38missing race day two.
01:40Nobody wants to see that for the fans, for the athletes
01:42for everybody that brings these events
01:44together but I think, you know, incredibly
01:46in the five seasons that we've had at SailGP
01:48this is only the third day of racing
01:50that we've missed. You know, as a sailor
01:52you know that we're
01:54the weather is what we have to deal with. Sometimes
01:56it's great and sometimes it's like this but
01:58with thunderstorms and lightning risk
02:00it's just not worth it and obviously we have another
02:02event in just a few days time in Geneva so
02:04we don't have to wait too long for more racing.
02:06Yeah, we don't have to wait long at all and
02:08you got to catch up with the winners of this event
02:10Emirates GBR very shortly after
02:12the race. Let's check that out now.
02:14Amazing to win. Great day yesterday.
02:16Obviously gutted for the fans and everyone
02:18that we can't race today but
02:20yeah, what a day yesterday. Yeah, absolutely stoked.
02:22Yeah, great day racing
02:24and 80 metre wings and we're just looking
02:26forward to Geneva. You know, disappointing
02:28not to be out there but
02:30Geneva's going to be fantastic. For sure, yeah.
02:32I think to be in the mix with the top three
02:34there's four of us super tight on points
02:36and I think the last three
02:38events anything's going to happen
02:40and to be in the mix I think is all
02:42we kind of hope for at the start of the season.
02:44So yeah, we're excited for the rest of it.
02:46It's done brilliantly. I mean it's been an up and down season
02:48as it has been for all of the teams
02:50but the last couple of events, Germany with the
02:52setback with the crash, coming back from
02:54that and then sailing just brilliantly
02:56yesterday in pretty tricky conditions.
02:58We can really see the team are gelling well
03:00and this is a critical moment in the season
03:02with this triple header now and then looking
03:04to the final in Abu Dhabi in November
03:06so all too playful.
03:08I can tell you it's way more stressful watching
03:10I mean it's just budding the fingernail
03:12moments. Some of these, you know
03:14the race is just getting so close and I think
03:16what's fantastic is the quality
03:18of the racing and we can see that
03:20I mean okay we're having a few crashes
03:22now and then which is not ideal but it's
03:24action-packed. Great interviews from the team
03:26there. Now looking ahead to our next events
03:28in Geneva and Cadiz in Spain before
03:30Abu Dhabi. What's on the agenda?
03:32What is Geneva looking like and who could be
03:34favoured in those conditions? I think it's really
03:36interesting when we look at what's left of the season
03:38you have Geneva which is typically a lighter wind
03:40event which still challenges
03:42the sailors in a specific way
03:44and you know that might suit teams
03:46more like Spain and
03:48Emirates Great Britain if we're looking at the top four
03:50then we go to Cadiz, we're in the Atlantic Ocean
03:52we have waves, we have wind hopefully
03:54you know black foils, bonds flying roos
03:56I think for them you know they love those sort of
03:58difficult conditions so it's going to
04:00get tight in the top four. And it's
04:02hotting up with the rivalries, CJ
04:04obviously at the top there you have the bonds flying
04:06roos and the black foils, who are you favouring
04:08going into those last two events?
04:10Ah, that's a really difficult question
04:12both of the teams are so
04:14strong in what Lisa said are those
04:16tricky, wavy, breezy
04:18conditions but I think I
04:20have to put my money on the bonds flying roos
04:22the bonds flying roos, okay you've heard it here first
04:24and with momentum is a key
04:26part of what's going on here at CLGP
04:28and Emirates GBR coming off hot
04:30off a win this weekend, are they looking
04:32strong going into the next event in Geneva?
04:34I think Emirates Great Britain will do really
04:36well in Geneva, I think if we look at
04:38the events that they've done well so far this season
04:40especially when it's like quite tricky
04:42quite erratic, I've said
04:44this many times but I think this relationship
04:46between Hannah Mills, you know multiple
04:48Olympic medalists, Dylan Fletcher as well
04:50as the driver, he trusts Hannah so much
04:52so when you're in conditions where you're
04:54trying to find wind to
04:56be able to you know overtake
04:58and things like that, they just seem to have it
05:00really dialed in and that partnership I think
05:02is something that is really valuable for that team
05:04coming off the win here
05:06and things like that, I just think
05:08that team is looking really good right now
05:10And with Los Gallos of Spain
05:12being a bit of an outside pick
05:14what event do you think is going to favour them the most
05:16and where could they really chip away
05:18at that third place position?
05:20I think going into Cadiz, Los Gallos
05:22always will perform well, I mean
05:24that's their home venue, they've got
05:26their friends and family out there supporting
05:28them and it could be pretty
05:30breezy and wavy and I think it
05:32could suit their team really well
05:34Home advantage isn't always
05:36a pro though because as you see we're
05:38here in France and we are stuck
05:40inside on day two of racing and the French
05:42team have not made the grand final
05:44potentially at this point
05:46Yeah, I mean it's super tough, I think nobody
05:48expected us to be sitting in the Société
05:50Notique de Saint-Tropez instead of out there on the water with
05:52racing on day two so it was a really
05:54tough day for the French team out on the water yesterday
05:56but to be honest it was a tough day for
05:58everybody. I think if you ask me
06:00or even the French team at the beginning of the season
06:02the fact that you know they were sitting on the
06:04sidelines waiting for an F50
06:06that they would be fifth at this point in the season
06:08they probably you know would be pretty
06:10happy but you know speaking to
06:12Contant de la Pierre and the Mixon yesterday
06:14they were really frustrated with how they sailed yesterday
06:16and you know whilst it is
06:18mathematically very challenging
06:20for them to go from fifth to third
06:22you know we can't write anything off
06:24we know penalty points boat collisions anything
06:26can happen but for them right now
06:28it's just going to be about getting a bet wins
06:30and being proud of their performance
06:32but yeah it's a tough one.
06:33And we can see those comments from
06:34quite a dejected Contant de la Pierre
06:36in the Mixon yesterday, check it out.
06:38Contant it was such a challenging race course
06:40out there I guess why was it so difficult?
06:44yeah I think shifty win firstly
06:46and super gusty
06:48like the last
06:50yeah the last start was
06:52was strange
06:54like we
06:56the Wolf Fleet was expecting
06:58a nice left shift I would say
07:00and it's exactly the opposite
07:02that arrived fully right
07:04and yeah it was a big mess
07:06so I think the whole day was like this
07:08and yeah I was a bit out of faith
07:12all the day
07:14as soon as you were out of the style
07:16it was okay
07:18but from the start to M1
07:20it was a kind of a big mess
07:22and yeah I think we didn't have the
07:26how do you say
07:28the luck we were expecting
07:30and some of the time we were locked in
07:32with the Brazilian doing a penalty
07:34and yeah some of the details
07:36that you are not happy
07:38so we touch on North Star Canada
07:40for a second with Giles Scott
07:42how do a team like North Star Canada
07:44and the teams below them in the ranking
07:46still maintain that drive that momentum
07:48that push going into those final few events
07:50even though they can't make the final
07:52yeah that's a really good point
07:54I think when you're in that position
07:56where you know you don't really have a chance
07:58at making that grand final
08:00you still have to use every opportunity
08:02on SailGP to train
08:04and to get better as a team
08:06because you obviously want to join
08:08into the next season as strong as possible
08:10so they're going to go out there
08:12and race their best race
08:13no matter what happens
08:14and after all this is SailGP
08:16anything can happen
08:18penalty points are being thrown out
08:20and you know at the end of the day
08:22these athletes are racing
08:24for an event win
08:26not specifically maybe for the grand final
08:28they want to win that prize money
08:29so they're going to go out there
08:30and race as hard as they can
08:31and Lisa you mentioned to me
08:33earlier about Diego said
08:34he's got one mode
08:35with the Los Giles team
08:36and that is push
08:37talk to me about athletes
08:39and their mindset
08:40yeah it's quite interesting
08:41so if you look at the Spanish team
08:42they're a couple of points
08:43outside of the top three
08:44obviously you need to be in the top three
08:46to make that grand final
08:47so with that points gap below him
08:49he's got nothing to really lose
08:50so they're going to be going out there
08:52they're going to be playing
08:53maybe a more high risk game
08:54pushing a little bit harder
08:55because you know
08:56they've got to do something
08:58to close the points gap
08:59whereas then you look at
09:00the top three
09:01they're really close on points
09:02it doesn't really matter
09:04if you're one, two or three
09:05you just have to lock your spot there
09:06so there might be a little bit more
09:08of a conservative game playing there
09:09but when you've got 12 boats
09:11on a racetrack
09:12it is kind of hard to do that
09:13I do expect a few little games
09:15to be played
09:16but you know
09:17being the Spanish
09:18it's all in right now
09:19we saw some of the rivalry
09:21hotting up yesterday
09:22between the Black Foils
09:23and the Bonds Flying Roos
09:24around that mark rounding
09:26do you think we're going to see
09:27more of that to come?
09:28I just think that's how they race
09:29whether it's racing for the grand final
09:31or racing for position
09:32on a turn up
09:33but you know
09:34I think
09:35what is interesting
09:36is to see
09:37what teams actually play spoiler
09:39because you know
09:40it's great to have
09:41beat the
09:42you know
09:43if you're New Zealand
09:44you want to beat Australia
09:45great you can get a point
09:46but if you throw
09:47teams that are 7th to 10th
09:49in there and they're
09:50starting to create a points gap
09:51that's when you have real problems
09:52so you don't want to have
09:53any enemies out there
09:54you want people to be your friend
09:55of course
09:56yeah I will
09:57you always want people to be your friend
09:58and CJ you are someone that's been
09:59on an F50
10:00you've experienced what the training is like
10:02what the seasons are like
10:03do you think that now the pressure is off
10:04for some of these teams
10:05they can use that time for the training
10:07and development of their team?
10:08I mean obviously on SailGP
10:10you use whatever time you have
10:12to the most
10:13and all of them I think
10:15when they enter a race weekend
10:16it's all about racing
10:18and trying to get
10:20to be the best team possible
10:22I don't think any team
10:23has fully given up
10:24on their season
10:25per se
10:26so I think they're just
10:27going to go out there
10:28and race as hard as they can
10:29winning mentality
10:31yeah the other thing is like
10:32okay maybe they can't get
10:33into the top three
10:34but you know
10:35they still want to be as far
10:36up the leaderboard as possible
10:37I mean you know
10:38it's kind of like that
10:39midfield race
10:40and I think that's the thing
10:41when you have sponsors
10:42when you have all these
10:43commercial obligations
10:44you still want to show
10:45oh okay our momentum's going up
10:47we're going to be there next season
10:48the season's hotting up
10:49we're getting towards the end
10:50which means momentum is key
10:52conditions are key
10:53what do you think about Geneva?
10:54I mean anything can happen in Geneva
10:56we're expecting it to be
10:57the lighter wind range
10:58which you know
10:59sometimes you know
11:00might look a little bit
11:01less high adrenaline
11:02but I can tell you
11:03the heart rates are still
11:04really high on the
11:05on the athletes out there
11:06and I think
11:07it's about
11:08as you said
11:09momentum
11:10so having back-to-back events
11:11it's rare for SailGP
11:12you know
11:13that's going to suit people like
11:14Emirates Great Britain
11:15the bonds frying ruse
11:16we'll have to you know
11:17reset
11:18we've only got a couple of days
11:19and I can't wait
11:20it's coming so fast
11:21with only two events left in the race
11:23to the winner takes all grand final
11:25in Abu Dhabi
11:26things are hotting up
11:27the story is still unfolding
11:29and we're going to see all the action
11:31next week in Geneva
