00:00Hey, I'm Alex here in Sassnitz, Germany
00:02with SailGP legend CJ Perez.
00:04Today, we are going to walk you through
00:06the SailGP course in simple terms
00:08for any casual fans out there.
00:10And because we're doing it on land,
00:11I'm calling it the dry run.
00:13Get it?
00:13Lover.
00:15Every race starts somewhere, CJ.
00:17Talk me through what's going on in this area.
00:20So, the start of a SailGP race
00:22is the most important part.
00:24It's where races are either won or lost.
00:26So, we're currently in what's called
00:28the starting box.
00:29This is basically the area where all the F-50s
00:32are jostling for their position.
00:34Basically, the goal is to hit the start line
00:37at zero with full pace.
00:39So, we're heading to the start line.
00:40It's counting down.
00:41We get to zero, but I'm over.
00:43What happens then?
00:44If you're over early, then you get an OCS penalty.
00:47And basically, that means you have to full slam
00:49on the brake and wait for all the boats to pass you.
00:53Game over.
00:54Yes, exactly.
00:55Okay, so let's hit the start line
00:56and head up to mark one, is it?
00:58Yes.
00:59Mark one.
00:59This is the fastest angle.
01:01I think it's the most exciting.
01:02All the boats are coming into one tiny area of the course.
01:06It's just so exciting.
01:07It can be quite chaotic.
01:09How fast?
01:09Too fishy knots.
01:10This is crazy stuff.
01:11I think it's 100 kilometers an hour, right?
01:13Yeah.
01:13Wow, that's incredible.
01:15If we get around this mark without catching on to it,
01:17like a certain team did in Portsmouth.
01:19Oh, I think the Germans have caught the mark there.
01:21Oh, no.
01:22So, I'm on the outside here.
01:24I'm trying to get in the same place as you.
01:25What's the rules?
01:26The inside boat always has right of way.
01:28So, if you nail the start and you're first round this mark,
01:32you've got a pretty good chance of winning, right?
01:33Exactly.
01:34OK.
01:34I'll give you some room on the way around as you've got priority.
01:38Now, we're going to head to the bottom gate,
01:40but sailboats, we can't sail directly down or into the wind.
01:44OK.
01:45So, we're going to go down by zigzagging and do what we call jibes.
01:49And in SailJP, we have electronic boundaries,
01:52so we can't actually go too far.
01:54So, now we're going to make our first jibes.
01:58We're winning right now.
01:59Yes, we're winning.
02:00We're going to do our final jibes, and we're going to take this bottom mark.
02:04And we have an epic rounding.
02:06You give me room because I'm on the inside.
02:08Again, boats can't sail directly into the wind,
02:11although we wish that would be the easiest way to get up.
02:15But we have to go at a zigzag.
02:18And wow, would you look at that.
02:20We are making it in one tack straight to this top mark.
02:24That is ideal.
02:25We are winning right now.
02:28In a normal race, how many legs would they do?
02:29We do seven, so we'll do a couple more upwind and downwinds,
02:32and then it's the sprint to the finish.
02:35We've done our legs, and we're about to hit the last leg.
02:37I've got priority, and then it's a sprint to the finish.
02:40Oh, who's going to make it?
02:41Who's going to make it?
02:42She's an athlete.
02:43Damn.
02:45CJ wins, as always.
02:47And that's it.
02:48That's a SailJP.
02:49That is how simple a SailJP course can be when explained by a SailJP expert.
02:56I don't think I've got what it takes to be one.
02:58Now it's time for a day of racing.
03:00Let's do it.
