00:06Welcome to the final day of the 470 World Championships in Enoshima, Japan.
00:11This is the day when all the medals are going to be decided.
00:16Hi, my name's Andy Rice.
00:18There you can see my co-commentator Igor Maronich handing out the bibs before racing.
00:24I'll introduce you to Igor in a moment.
00:26But firstly, we're going to go to some interviews before the sailors get on the water.
00:41I think let's see how much wind it is and how stable the conditions are.
00:45We are keen to race against the others and do our very best and see what we can achieve today.
01:00So now the boat's heading onto the water, ready for the final battle between the top 10.
01:05And there are our top 10.
01:07And in yellow bib position, 35 points, Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris from Great Britain.
01:14They're holding an eight-point advantage over the defending world champions.
01:18Can they win their title again?
01:20Yorijama and Marta Cardona.
01:23And then local favourites, Tetsuya, Isozaki and Yuriseki in third.
01:28And the other seven looking to upset the order and see if they can get onto the podium
01:33by the end of what will be two medal races being decided today in Enoshima.
01:3980 degrees Fahrenheit.
01:40Light winds from the northeast.
01:42Just six knots of breeze.
01:44That will make it a tense, close, slow kind of game today.
01:49But still very exciting in its own way.
01:53Igor Maronich, the 470 Olympic champion from Rio 2016.
01:58Now class president of the 470.
02:01We are 38 seconds away.
02:03Which end of the line would you want to be, Igor?
02:07Hi, Andy.
02:08Hi, everyone.
02:08Well, it's a very light wind this morning in Enoshima, as you can see.
02:13So I would like to be more on the edges of the line.
02:17Just to have an option to sail free and not in a congested area.
02:24But yeah, it's very pressure related.
02:27So I would look outside for sure.
02:30Just 10 seconds to go.
02:31Coming into the final five seconds.
02:33It's a late charge from the yellow bibs in GBR55.
02:36Not really getting the start that they want.
02:39And Greece 70 also slow off the line.
02:42Good start for Italy.
02:44Just beyond Spain 44.
02:47Will Spain be able to live there?
02:48Or will they have to tack away early?
02:50That's the reigning defending world champions.
02:53They go into attack because Great Britain also goes into attack.
02:57And so does Greece.
02:59So we've got three of the top contenders.
03:01Oh, is there even a match race we're seeing going on here between Spain and Great Britain?
03:07Surely seems a little bit early for that.
03:09What do you think, Igor?
03:11Is that match race or coincidence?
03:14It could be a mix of the things.
03:16You know, they want to hurt each other a bit to maybe get a few easy points.
03:22It's a very early stage in the race.
03:24So then if you get a bit on a back foot, it might turn your race back.
03:29And we see Martin and Bettine there at the moment a bit struggling.
03:36Meanwhile, coming out to this side, we see Sweden to the left of picture.
03:41Italy 6 to the right of our picture.
03:45And most of the boats coming out towards the right-hand side.
03:48It's very light winds.
03:50And as Igor said, when wind is in short supply, sometimes you want to be on the edges of the
03:55race course,
03:56not in the middle, because you have a better chance of scooping up whatever limited amounts of power you can
04:02get from the wind.
04:03Is that right, Igor?
04:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.
04:06I'm just looking a bit on the left side of the fleet.
04:09It looks like they have a tiny bit more pressure there.
04:14So Swiss, Yves and Maya, who did a very good start, are among the leading boats there.
04:21Yeah, so Switzerland 3 doing very, very well.
04:25And Igor, this is a new format.
04:27We're still getting used to it.
04:29It's not even a year old.
04:30It's not just one single medal race.
04:32We're having two races today.
04:35In theory, how many of these ten teams still has a shot at winning the gold medal at this stage?
04:41So in theory, all ten teams have a chance to get a medal, because the points after the final series
04:50have been compressed.
04:52So that first, there's no gap between two neighbor boats in the ranking.
04:57If it's bigger than nine points, then it's compressed to nine points.
05:01And if, like, third boat is a benchmark, so all the difference to boats behind larger than 18 points is
05:14reduced to 18 points.
05:15So that means that after two races, in these two races, all ten boats have theoretical chance for medal, even
05:22though the boats, in this case, from seventh to, from eighth to tenth, who are exactly 18 points behind the
05:30third, they have quite small chance.
05:34Meanwhile, on the racetrack, Italy 6 is just tacked onto starboard and looks to be making good gains, consolidating across
05:42the fleet, just getting ahead of some port tackers.
05:45And, of course, Italy has the right of way as the starboard tack boat, and there's a bit of a
05:49duck that the Swiss have to execute on the Italians.
05:54So the Italians looking strong right now, Greece 70 on the left, still with a bit of catching up to
06:00do, but the gaps between all ten are still pretty small.
06:04So anything could still happen.
06:07Switzerland just tacks onto starboard.
06:08Greece is forced to tack away onto port.
06:11And just behind Greece is the jury boat, keeping a close eye on any potential contact or infringements, or also
06:20making sure that no one is exceeding the propulsion rules and sailing the 470 legally.
06:26So just ten boats for us to keep an eye on, close between Japan and Italy.
06:32Remember Japan 22, they are currently in a podium position, they go into the day in third overall.
06:38So a good score for Tetsuya Isozaki and Yuriseki, and possibly with a chance of winning a wild title on
06:46home waters.
06:47And there across we see Portugal 25 on the left of picture, Germany 50, just going out of picture, Germany
06:5450 start the day in fourth, just outside of the medals.
06:57So what can Theresa Hoffler and Christopher Hur do today, is this a moving day, can they climb up a
07:05step onto the podium or maybe get even higher?
07:08We'll find out over the course of the next hour or so.
07:12GBR 55 after a pretty awful start, at least they have clear air, just tacking onto port.
07:22And let's see when we get the broader picture of the fleet, let's see how GBR 55 is doing, it
07:29looks to me from the digital tracker like GBR 55 are not looking particularly great.
07:34And they're in about 6th or 7th, as things stand, and that's GBR tacking back again, top right of your
07:42picture.
07:42And here's GBR 9, another British boat, Hannah Bristow and James Taylor tacking and forcing the French France 7 in
07:52turn to tack away.
07:53So it's a double tack, they didn't want to go any further, but I wonder if they're almost using these
07:59opportunities to do additional tacks.
08:02Is that a thing in this kind of wind, Igor?
08:06Yeah, exactly. It's quite light, so tacks don't cost as much as in more breeze.
08:13So teams are happily tacking probably more than they would on a windy day, but they do it with a
08:21great technique.
08:22Yes, they certainly do. And good technique on the last tack by the Japanese to take the lead around the
08:29first windward mark.
08:31So straight into a roll jibe and we will presumably see them get the spinnaker up very quickly and almost
08:40set.
08:41And it's a roll jibe too for Switzerland in second, but they better watch out for the British because the
08:47British are coming upwind with rights.
08:49Italy 6 carries on at the mark, Spain 44 goes into a roll jibe.
08:56So a good recovery by Spain after a not particularly good start.
09:01Germany 50 goes round in fifth, Portugal 25 around in sixth.
09:07And now we're back looking just behind Greece growing round.
09:12Now here are yellow bib wearers.
09:14This is not the way that Great Britain would have wanted to have started the day.
09:19This is going to put them under pressure.
09:21And the points gap will close up between Great Britain in the lead and Spain who are a few places
09:28in front.
09:30And around in last place go the French.
09:33It's still plenty can happen on this race course, can't it Igor?
09:38No, for sure, for sure.
09:39It's it's light and tricky, as we said.
09:42And I think Martin and the team for sure didn't want to start like a race like this.
09:48And they need to do some catch up because not only they will lose some points, they do have handy
09:54lead going into the final in the medal series.
09:56But, you know, it might affect their confidence for the second race.
10:01So they need to do some catching up.
10:04For me was quite interesting that they went for a jibe set.
10:08I thought, of course, for geometry was cool, but I thought some of them are quite congested, quite tight after
10:17the mark.
10:18So Greece and Italy who did straight sets will be able to sail clearer and possibly faster.
10:31Yeah, that's the advantage of going the opposite way.
10:34Very unusual to see the leader go straight into a jibe like we saw with Japan.
10:39So Japan must have seen something on that side of the course that they liked.
10:45And it's always hard to tell.
10:47But I just wonder if there was a slightly darker water on this side of the race course.
10:53Maybe this is the better way to go.
10:54I see that Switzerland actually is managing to square back the Spinnaker pole and has got more wind than the
11:00Japanese.
11:01So maybe that wind will start catching up with the Japanese.
11:04But I think this is an opportunity for Switzerland to close the gap.
11:09But meanwhile, on the far side of the three boats that have gone the other way, Italy 6 could be
11:14on the attack as well.
11:15So maybe that was a good call by Elena Berta to go the other way down the race track.
11:21And Igor, what do you think?
11:23We're seeing Spain jibe here.
11:24What's the next move here?
11:28Well, I think Japanese now are quite on the approach to the bottom mark.
11:33But as I said, I think this group where the Swiss were and Spanish and Germany 50, I think they
11:40were quite in a tough lanes after the top mark because they were all hoisting in dirty air from all
11:47the boats sailing upwind.
11:50So it's quite unusual to move that they did actually.
11:53Yeah, you're right.
11:54They had to pay a price for taking that early jibe.
11:58And wind is in short supply today in the Bay of Anishima.
12:02So you need to make the most of what you can find.
12:06And now is the moment of truth.
12:07We'll see if those boats that carried on and went the opposite way have made a gain.
12:13And actually, I'm not sure it's worked out as well as I thought.
12:16I thought maybe Italy would be more of a threat from that side.
12:22But yeah, actually, maybe not so bad.
12:25Yeah, maybe not so bad.
12:26So Italy on the right hand side of our screen, just going out of picture.
12:30Maybe that is a small gain to Italy.
12:32So good play by Elena Berta and Giulio Calabro.
12:38And yeah, fair play there.
12:40It looks like, Igor, your hunch about carrying on and continuing was the right thing to do.
12:46No, they are an experienced team.
12:51They sail well.
12:52They probably had maybe more reasons other than just traffic and dirty air.
12:58But yeah, they did a nice jump from third to second.
13:04Meanwhile, left of picture, just going left out of picture, you can just see them occasionally.
13:09GBR 55 at the back.
13:12So our yellow bib wearers going into the day with the best chance of winning the gold medal
13:17have given themselves even more to do because they rounded the top mark in seventh.
13:23But this has not been a good run downwind and GBR 55 with even more to do.
13:29But actually, as I say that GBR 55 coming in towards this bottom mark,
13:34it's not looking as bad as the results board on the left was suggesting.
13:38They do at least have inside rounding rights.
13:40This is Spain rounding up.
13:46And that's France dropping the kite.
13:50And France was in last place.
13:53They have now risen up to, I was going to say seventh or eighth, but I'm not sure if that's
13:58quite the case.
13:58So it's still very congested in the middle to back of the fleet.
14:04And meanwhile, Japan 22 holding a slim lead ahead of Italy and Spain, who has risen up to third in
14:14the standing.
14:14So that's dangerous news for the British.
14:17The British looking still pretty far at the back.
14:22Actually, there are two British, but whichever ones I talk about, it's Great Britain pretty much in the last two
14:27places in this ten-boat fleet at the moment.
14:29So not looking good for Great Britain.
14:32The thing is looking a little bit better for Spain in their bid to defend that world title.
14:37And there's Germany 50 also with the chance of grabbing a medal today.
14:43Looking pretty good going out to the right-hand side, I'm going to say, even though it doesn't look like
14:49that from the angle we're seeing.
14:52Yeah, sure, sure. Germany 50 is doing a good job in this race.
14:58I'm not sure their start was so good, but they are sailing well.
15:02I would say they are sailing very well all the week, actually.
15:05So they are still in the reach and having a solid first race is going to give them a proper
15:13chance in the second one.
15:14So good for them.
15:17Meanwhile, up at the front, Japan 22 still fighting for the top of the course.
15:27Nice tack by Japan getting some good speed.
15:31Yeah, that was very energetic.
15:33And then the boat and crew and skipper getting the boat very fast to make it flat, not to have
15:41too excessive inward heel.
15:43They did it very well.
15:46Meanwhile, here's the threat on the other side of the race course, Italy and Greece.
15:51Can they get past Japan?
15:53It was a good attack by Italy and it looks like maybe we're not seeing Japan in this image yet,
16:01but we'll see Japan shortly.
16:02Oh, no, that's a very nice angle for Japan on the left of screen.
16:06Italy is certainly very close to them, but I think this is still marginal advantage to Japan 22, who look
16:14like they're on ley line and look like they have completed their last tack of this race.
16:21I might have called that a bit too soon because it's a thing.
16:24No, there we are.
16:25They do have to tack again.
16:27They were a little bit thin on that ley line, but they use the opportunity to put a bit of
16:31bad air on Italy, do a quick double tack.
16:33And now they will feel confident that they are on ley line.
16:37Even then, it's still a pretty thin ley line, isn't it?
16:41Yeah, they did not take too much extra space for them.
16:47So a roll bear away for Japan.
16:50Will they go straight into the jive this time?
16:52Looks like they're going for the straight set.
16:54So they saw how well that worked for Italy on the previous hoist and also it keeps them away from
17:00the traffic.
17:01So Italy are doing the same straight hoist this time.
17:04Greece up into third place.
17:06These are good games for Greece.
17:10Yeah, I believe they gained a bit on the left side.
17:13I think there's a bit more pressure now looking down and going right.
17:16So I think this is why they continue with the straight set.
17:21Now, Yodi Jammar hoisting the kite and looking over his shoulder at the same time.
17:25Doing a lot of multitasking there.
17:27Looking at the Germans who were very, very close on their heels.
17:32But meanwhile, the bad news continues for Great Britain.
17:35in 9th and 10th at the back of this fleet.
17:40So still, GBR 55 is the one that we're really keeping a close eye on because they started the day
17:45with yellow bibs.
17:47They start the day with the points advantage, but they will see a lot of that points advantage slipping away.
17:53But having said that, Igor, there is opportunity here because look at Japan.
17:58There is almost no wind where Japan is right now.
18:02Exactly.
18:02It's very light and these jibes now are very critical to get the kite fill in soon.
18:10You want to do it in a good place that there's nobody disturbing your air.
18:14So in this very light stuff, it's very critical to position yourself well.
18:19And I actually think Japan is still comfortable.
18:22They have still wind coming ahead of Greeks, of Afro and Yorgos.
18:28So I think they are sailing towards a win in this race, local heroes.
18:34Yeah.
18:35Well, that would be amazing.
18:37Japan is one of the most enthusiastic nations in the world for 470 racing.
18:44There was even a book published by the New Zealand legend Hamish Wilcox.
18:49He wrote How to Win in 470s, I think the book was called, but it was only ever published in
18:54Japanese.
18:55And the first 10,000 copies sold out so quickly.
18:58Can you believe that?
18:5910,000 copies of a book about 470 sailing that they had to do a reprint of that book,
19:05which was written almost 40 years ago.
19:10Meanwhile, quite a lot of leeward heel on these boats.
19:13And Igor, it looks like there's so little wind to fill the sails that they're even using gravity to help
19:20fill the sails.
19:21Is that right?
19:22Yeah, exactly.
19:23Exactly.
19:23A bit of heel helps.
19:25Also lowering speed pole would help.
19:28So yeah, they are using all the tools to keep the kite full and to push them forward.
19:34Looks like there is further less wind to windward.
19:38So I actually hope they will have enough wind to finish this race.
19:42I mean, local crowd would be happy if this happens.
19:46Yeah.
19:47Yes.
19:48Well, we see how much pressure there is at the Olympic Games to complete races in less than ideal conditions.
19:55We saw that in Marseille many, many times with races deciding medals where normally you wouldn't want to hold sailboat
20:05races.
20:05So this is the world of racing in front of a global audience, isn't it?
20:09You just have to get on and deal with the conditions that you're given.
20:14Yeah.
20:14Yeah, exactly.
20:15Exactly.
20:16And the Japanese team, Tetsu and Yure, they really used well the conditions.
20:20Probably also local knowledge.
20:22They sail on these waters a lot.
20:23So here they are sailing to the win in the medal race number one.
20:29And yes, well, maybe it's a little bit early to say that because things still happen.
20:33Yeah, sure.
20:33But looking good, looking good, yeah.
20:36Looking good because they're on the final approach towards the finish and they have really extended their lead.
20:42And Italy still to go around the final turning mark.
20:47So this is looking very good indeed for Tetsuya Isozaki and Yuriseki about to win a critical race of the
20:57World Championship on home waters.
20:59With the lighthouse of Enoshima in the background in the far distance, the place where the Tokyo 2020 Games took
21:06place.
21:08And yes, I think we can confidently say that this is victory for Japan 22 in the opening of two
21:16medal races on the final day of the 470 World Championship.
21:21I'm Andy Rice, a reporter from the UK with Igor Marinić, the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medalist for Croatia.
21:31What do we see here, Igor, the yellow bibs on the right hand side of the screen, can they still
21:37get a result from this?
21:40Yeah, they did manage to get, I think, two points in this down if they finish seventh, I think, because
21:47they were ninth on the top mark.
21:49So, I mean, every point counts a lot.
21:52And if the teams behind win two points less, I think that's good for them.
21:58So it's a good catch up by Martin and Bettine.
22:01OK, so every point counts.
22:03And there we have it.
22:04So now the points gap diminishes between Britain and Spain down to six points.
22:11And that win by Isozaki and Seki takes them to 50 points and only two points off silver and only
22:19eight points off gold.
22:22And so now what will the sailors be doing, Igor?
22:27How do you reset?
22:28Do you have a discussion with your coach or is there not even time in between races to do that?
22:34Yeah, no, sure.
22:35Now you go to your coach, you do the mathematics.
22:38There is like simple application to check the scores now.
22:43And yeah, now there's less teams in the fight for the medals.
22:48There's five of them still able to win a medal.
22:53So it's still going to be a very, very interesting second race.
22:58As you said, there is now six points between Martin and Bettine and Jordi and Marta.
23:06And there is just two between Spanish team and the Japanese team of Tetsuo and Yuria.
23:13So it's going to be probably a very interesting fight for the silver bronze.
23:18But also we must not forget German team, Teresa and Christopher and Afro and Yorgos who are in the reach,
23:29like very good reach.
23:30So I expect a very interesting race.
23:34And it's particularly impressive that Greece 70 is still in the hunt for the medals
23:39because as you were saying yesterday on our commentary, Igor,
23:43Afrodita Zegas, Decline and George Cavas, they're only a new pairing. Is that right?
23:49Yeah, that's true. That's true. They are sailing only a couple of months together.
23:55Afrodita, she did have many issues with the injuries lately.
24:00And also Yorgos was out of the boat for some years.
24:05So he was a coach in a club and then they decided to go together again.
24:10And what a start. I can say only praise for them.
24:19Now, let's remind ourselves of the conditions.
24:2381 degrees Fahrenheit, six knots of breeze from the northeast.
24:27This is very, very light conditions. Sometimes it's hard to keep the boat moving.
24:33Ten boats on the racetrack. There will be individual agendas in between these boats.
24:39depending on what they're trying to achieve.
24:42So difficult question for me to put to you, Igor.
24:44But which end of the line are you going to choose this time?
24:50Hmm. As I told you earlier, I like the edges in this light wind.
24:54But now probably I would also look for the other teams that are important for the ranking and scoring
24:59and medals, of course. So maybe on the edges and maybe even a pin.
25:08I think it's quite strong to start by the pin.
25:09Well, no one else wants the pin, Igor. The pin is not looking popular.
25:13So you would have it all to yourself.
25:15Yeah, yeah. Yeah, perfect.
25:16Three, two, one. And oh no, Germany 50. They're in all kinds of trouble.
25:20They're still going backwards.
25:21That's a shocker.
25:23Absolute shocker. So, oh, they've got to do a penalty turn.
25:27I mean, surely that is the end of any hopes of Germany 50 being able to get a medal from
25:33this.
25:33They came into the day in fourth. They had a pretty reasonable first race just now.
25:38But wow, actually, they've executed that penalty very quickly and they're now up to speed.
25:44And with so many boats already on Port Tack, the penalty for Germany is not so bad because they're at
25:51least getting out into clear air quite quickly.
25:54But in these early stages, Igor, looking at the wind on the water, looking at where the boats are, who
26:00would you want to be right now?
26:01I think I see darker water on the left side. And just looking at the Japanese team, I think they
26:13surprised me with their choice.
26:14I think for the situation they are in, you know, fighting for the silver and being in reach for gold,
26:24and having two boats on their heels behind, they took quite a big risk starting by the committee and tacking
26:33early.
26:33But let's see how that plays out for them.
26:37And here's the view from the other side of the racetrack.
26:40This is France in close proximity and we're back looking at the other side.
26:46France tacking on the left.
26:55And Spain and Japan still coming out this way.
27:00Trying to see who that is in the middle of the fleet right now.
27:04Is that Switzerland sort of on their own in the middle on port?
27:07Yeah, that is Switzerland, yeah.
27:09Yeah.
27:10So they're not doing too bad where they are.
27:13But it doesn't, I was going to say, it doesn't seem that great for these boats that we're looking at
27:18here, Japan and Spain.
27:21I actually think looking at the tracker, they are a bit back, Japan and Spain.
27:27And it looks like, yeah, as we see on the graphics here, the GBR is doing well, coming from the
27:35middle left.
27:35So pretty much looks like they are in a strong position at the moment.
27:42Well, that's what they need to do after what was a pretty awful first race for GBR 55.
27:48In these early stages, Martin Wrigley and Bertine Harris are doing well.
27:52They're vying for the front of this race.
27:55And that would mean as points stand, they would take the gold medal.
27:59They would win their first ever world title.
28:01But we know in these conditions, in six knots or less, things can change pretty quickly.
28:07Even if the speed of the boats is slow, the scenarios can change quickly.
28:12France 7 moving nicely bottom left of our screen, center of our screen now.
28:19Yeah, they seem to be leading, but there is still some boats on the left side.
28:23And I would say left is looking quite good.
28:26Almost feels like more left you go in this beat, better it is.
28:32And on the graphics we see Greece quite strong there on the left.
28:38And also Germany 50 that, yeah, we almost counted out after the terrible start they had.
28:45They are also approaching from that left side and they don't look bad at all.
28:50No, that's incredible, isn't it?
28:51And so I, as a commentator, I wrote off their chances, which of course did them an enormous favor
28:58because all the boats near them tacked away on support and gave them a clear run out of the line
29:03on starboard tack.
29:04Exactly, exactly.
29:06Sometimes like a bad start doesn't like mean end of the race.
29:10It pushes you maybe in clear lane and maybe, you know, gives you different perspective.
29:14And I think they used that second chance very well.
29:20And we're seeing the yellow bibs of GBR 55 and Bertine Harris even managing to get onto the trapeze.
29:27Okay, not stretched very far out of the boat, but I didn't even expect anyone to actually hang onto their
29:32trapeze handle today.
29:35Yeah, exactly. It's, it's picking up a bit also, also Ben and Rudy, they are on trapeze as well, a
29:41Portuguese team.
29:42So it's picked up a bit. Yeah.
29:46So Martin Wrigley looking over his shoulder, just checking in on the scenario going on around him.
29:53Bertine Harris looking forwards, just keeping an eye on any changes in wind pressure and adjusting her body weight very
29:59subtly to any slight changes in the strength of wind.
30:04But ahead of Great Britain, I think ahead of Great Britain, Greece and France.
30:11So France is the marginal leader right now. Great Britain in about third place as we approach the Wynwood mark
30:19for the first time.
30:22I think that is Greece to Wynwood of them. I'm not sure. No, that's France. France just tacking Great Britain
30:30tacks as soon as France tacks.
30:34Nice body movement through that tack for Great Britain. France coming up to the ley line and will they be
30:44able to tack in ahead of Greece on the left hand side?
30:47No, they don't want to risk it. Yeah.
30:51So Greece looks like they're going to be leading around this first mark.
30:57Here we are on board with the British just going into the tack in third place.
31:01Extra bit of body movement by Bertine Harris and then straight onto the handle just to promote an extra bit
31:08of acceleration towards the mark.
31:11And now it's the hasty work of setting that spinnaker and nice placement by the British.
31:17They've managed to get low on the line of the French around goes Germany.
31:21Absolute disaster off the start line, but redemption for the Germans because they go around this mark in fourth place.
31:28Really good recovery for them.
31:30It's impressive recovery from them and also looking at the results.
31:35Greece with Afro and Jorgos leading the race here.
31:40They are right up in the game for the medal seeing the Japanese in the very back with the Spanish
31:48team.
31:48So very interesting race because also Teresa and Christopher are in the game.
31:55So it's super, super interesting race.
31:57And as it's light and tricky, this is probably going to be up to the last meters.
32:06And Spain 44 going around in last, the defending world champions from Godinia, Poland last year, now have an awful
32:14lot of work to do.
32:15They had done some of that good work in the previous race.
32:18They closed the gap to just six points on the leaders from Great Britain.
32:22But now Great Britain is seven places in front of the Spanish.
32:26And so if Britain can hold that position, then Spain really has no hope of being able to defend the
32:34world title.
32:35So things looking up for the British team after what was a pretty awful first race just a few minutes
32:42earlier.
32:45Everybody still on this jibe? No one has jibed away yet.
32:48Igor, why do you think no one is testing the other side of the race course?
32:55It's probably pressure coming a bit from behind and then it's hard for teams ahead to sail deeper or to
33:02jibe earlier.
33:04And here, for example, we are seeing, yeah, I think Afro and Iorgos from Greece,
33:11they are having a bit higher lane issues to sail deeper.
33:16So they will probably have issues to jibe.
33:18Probably Le Mans is just waiting for them, you know, to jibe on top of them.
33:25Well, the boats that have jibed, I think, are looking quite good.
33:29I think Great Britain, who's jibed, is looking pretty strong.
33:33Yeah, exactly.
33:33Exactly.
33:34Normally, starboard tech is the one where people are struggling, sailing on low mode and quite often a bit slower.
33:42And then after the jibe, they are sailing a bit differently.
33:45And also looks like there's a bit of a darker water where the German team is.
33:53So they might do some catching up here.
33:57Yeah, we've seen some really nice roll jibes just now by pretty much all the competitors really beautifully handled,
34:06managing to keep the spinnakers filling through the manoeuvre.
34:09But now you look at Greece, France, Great Britain and just a little bit further back, Germany.
34:15But it looks like a pretty tight race between Greece, France and Great Britain to get down to the bottom
34:20of the course in first place.
34:25But what about Spain? Still back in last place. A lot for Yori Jama and Marta Cardona to do.
34:34And really, you have to say, Igor, well, I think you pretty much said it yesterday,
34:39probably the most consistent performers of the 2026 season have been GBR55.
34:44Just remind us of what they've achieved this year.
34:48Yes, so earlier this year, they won European championships and they have been second at the two Grand Slam events
34:57at Palmeynier.
34:59And they won the last one Grand Slam event in LA.
35:03So basically, the worst result this year was the second place on regatta, which is pretty much incredible.
35:12So super good season for them and their coach Gidi.
35:16So now they are looking like the only safe team here being in front and their main rivals being in
35:24the back.
35:26Meanwhile, the rest of the fleet executing mark roundings around the choice of the two gate marks and fairly even
35:33split.
35:35There's GBR55 just about to go into attack.
35:39And it looks like France, who did an early attack out of the opposite mark, might have made a gain
35:44on Great Britain.
35:46I don't think they've got ahead of them. But yeah, France ducking the British.
35:50So that was a really good exit out of the gate for France, who were forced to attack away really.
35:56I'm not sure they wanted to do the instant rounding and attack, but that seemed to work for them surprisingly
36:02well.
36:02So maybe the French can threaten Great Britain for the overall lead. We'll see.
36:08But also Germany 50 in the hunt. Great Britain doing its best to cover both sides of the race course.
36:17You can't cover all eventualities, but this is fairly good defensive sailing by GBR55.
36:24Yeah, exactly. They position themselves in the middle of the course.
36:28They don't want to take any risk for them at this stage.
36:32Any score in top four, like mathematically, gives them gold.
36:37And knowing that the main rivals are in the back, they are, I would imagine, a bit more relaxed
36:44and just trying to sail a safe race and keep it simple.
36:48Middle of the course, sailing between the competitors and the mark and that's it.
36:55Now, I don't know if you know what the points gap is between Spain and Japan.
37:00It wasn't a lot, was it?
37:03It's two points now, yeah.
37:04Two points. So I thought I saw a bit of a match racing move by Jamar and Cardona on the
37:10Japanese
37:11towards the back of the fleet. So I wonder if Jamar is thinking more about fighting for the silver.
37:17I think probably he's let the idea of getting another world title go.
37:22He knows that there's too much to do and maybe Jamar is thinking more about defending silver from the Japanese.
37:28No, I agree. I think they see, I think they see GBR team way ahead and they know the points.
37:38So they focus on their, on fight for the silver.
37:42But they should not forget that there is other boats in the mix and it's not just them and the
37:49Japanese team.
37:50Well, that if anything, can I say was the mistake that Jamar made at the last Olympics.
37:55I was amazed that he went into that match racing move before the start of the medal race in Marseille.
38:01And it looked like it was sort of an all or nothing bid for the gold medal.
38:05And they ended up with nothing out of those games.
38:11I mean, we're not talking about an extreme scenario as that.
38:15But as you say, you can't get too fixated on just one other boat, can you?
38:19You've got to think about the wider picture.
38:22Yeah, exactly, exactly. No, but about the competition you mentioned in Paris games.
38:29Yes, they, they probably wanted to, to go for that gold.
38:32I know Jordy for many years, he is the extremely competitive sailor.
38:38He, he wants to win at every event.
38:40And I mean, look at his scores last, last 10 years.
38:45They are, they are really impressive.
38:46So no, no wonder he, he wants to win.
38:51And let me ask you, I'm sure you will know this.
38:54The, the Olympics that you won in Rio, was Jordy representing Spain then 10 years ago?
38:59He, he was sailing.
39:01He was with the John, his crew at the time.
39:06Yeah. So he was there.
39:07He, he's around for quite some years now.
39:09Yeah. Yeah.
39:10I still think of him as a young man, but he, he, he must be a little bit older than
39:14he looks.
39:17Here we go.
39:18Here's the hoist on the British boat, GBR 55.
39:23They are in the lead doing exactly what they need to do to win a world title.
39:30It will be their first ever world title in the 470.
39:33And it would crown an absolutely amazing season in 2026.
39:37When, as Eagle was telling us, they have, um, all the major events they've finished in the top two.
39:44So incredible performance by them across the whole wind range, which is always the, the mark of a champion, not
39:51to be just a one breeze wonder, but to be able to compete in all the conditions from the lightest
39:56of winds, like we're seeing today up to the really strong survival stuff where the 470 really comes alive as
40:03one of the most exciting Olympic classes.
40:05Behind the British Germany 50, would you believe it?
40:09Going backwards off the start line and now up into second place.
40:13And this, this is, this is incredible.
40:15Yeah.
40:15They are, they are having a race or regatta of their life.
40:18And now with the, with the position they are in, they are in, in a medal position.
40:23Um, so super sailing from them.
40:26It's incredible what they did after the start they had.
40:30So give us the points scenario as things stand.
40:32We know that Great Britain 55 is looking very solid for the gold medal right now.
40:37Where do you think silver and bronze is likely to go based on what we see right now?
40:41Uh, so at the moment, uh, I would say that, uh, Germany, uh, could be, uh, third in front of,
40:50in front of Japan.
40:51Japan is, uh, uh, last at the moment.
40:53And, and if Spain would be ninth, uh, which I think they are at the moment, then this would actually
40:59put them in silver position, uh, silver medal position.
41:02Um, so Teresa and Christopher, Christopher in, in silver.
41:06Wow.
41:07So they, they started today on, on a fourth, but let's see, I mean, there's still, um, almost full downwind
41:12to go for the, for the boats in the back at least.
41:14Um, but the, the, the length of this, uh, leg was a short.
41:19And so there's not going to be so many, uh, passing opportunities for the boats, uh, behind.
41:27So Germany, uh, Germany sailing an absolutely amazing race.
41:31I wonder if they could even improve on that and, and get ahead of the British.
41:35So the British are going to make sure that doesn't happen, but you, you never quite know.
41:39Great Britain go into a jibe, managing to keep that spinnaker filling.
41:44Never easy in these conditions.
41:46Germany 50 continuing on a little.
41:48Nope.
41:49They're going to pretty much follow the British in on that line.
41:51So there's not many attacking moves left.
41:55Great Britain looking increasingly comfortable for maintaining the lead down towards the bottom of the corner.
42:01Of course, for the final time, as I say that a bit of a gain for Germany 50 managing to
42:07sail slightly deeper.
42:08I just wonder if they will manage to get down the inside and get inside rounding rights on the British.
42:15Yeah.
42:16They are very close to the, to the mark down on the tracker.
42:18So it's, it's not likely that they will manage.
42:22Uh, no, no.
42:23So it's, it's, uh, clearly that, uh, Martin and, and Bettina are, are going to win this, this one.
42:31Super, super, uh, sailing this week.
42:34It's incredible how, how calm and, and well they sailed, uh, all the, all the six days.
42:41Yes.
42:41A really solid performance across the week by GBR 55.
42:45Still being closely followed by Germany 50 in second and then Greece 70 in third.
42:52This amazing performance by a team.
42:55Okay.
42:56They've got a lot of experience in the boat over the years, but, um, Afrodite and George have only been
43:03sailing together for two months.
43:05And now to be in close contention for the medals.
43:08What a, what a great performance by Greece.
43:11Not far off the finish line now.
43:13And the celebrations will begin as Martin Wrigley and Bettina Harris.
43:18They've won so much this season, but this is the most important one of all.
43:22They become 470 world champions for the first time in their glittering career.
43:27And you can see what that means for those British sailors.
43:31A big hug between Martin and Bettina, a big release of emotion.
43:35And it looks like Martin can barely believe it.
43:38It looks like the tears might not be too far away.
43:41And well done to Germany 50 crossing the finish line in second.
43:45We're yet to find out what that means.
43:47I mean, I don't even know what to say.
43:51I'm kind of, yeah, it is, it is unbelievable.
43:53And I think it's especially special being here in Enoshima where obviously Tokyo games weren't that long ago.
43:59It feels like the home of the 470.
44:01Like we've had so many boats here, biggest world since it went mixed.
44:05And I just, I'm, I'm so unbelievably happy.
44:08And proud of Matan and proud of Giddy and proud of Hannah and James.
44:11It's just been a great kind of two months.
44:14Yeah. And with the week we've had with the conditions, we knew how easy it is to get a bad
44:18race.
44:19And for things to be, yeah, not so good.
44:22And then we had a really tricky first race.
44:26So to finish, yeah, to finish like this and win the last race was really special.
44:32Well, we're in Japan, so a bit of karaoke.
44:34Yeah, probably some karaoke tonight to finish.
44:37Yeah, we'll get our songs ready.
44:39Thank you.
44:40Thank you.
44:42Thanks guys.
44:44Thank you.
44:44Just a lot.
44:46It's just, we were super happy.
44:49I mean, we believed in us until the last second.
44:52But still going as a fourth in the medal race and now having silver is super good.
44:57After the start, it was like, okay, now we have to go to the left side because the other balls
45:02in front of us go to the right after the penalty.
45:05And then we had a good comeback to the win vote mark.
45:08And we knew everything is possible, but I think we didn't believe it for quite some time.
45:12And on the last downwind suddenly it started hitting and we were both like, oh my gosh.
45:16I mean, we never had a big medal at any event.
45:19We had a medal at Cube Week, which was not a lot of people.
45:23So we believed in it, but we knew it's kind of unlikely.
45:27But we knew we were in a very good spot, very good spot from our buddies and our minds.
45:31So everything is possible.
45:33Everything is possible, yeah.
45:35Our goal was to get into the medal race because that was also our first medal race at the world
45:39championship.
45:39Last year we missed it by one point.
45:42So this feels so nice.
45:48Yeah, it was a very difficult day as a week, but I think we need to be proud.
45:55It's very hard to get a medal in a world championship and obviously, yes, you always want to win,
46:01but I think it's also important to value how hard it is to get a medal in the world championship.
46:05So, to be honest, we are very happy.
46:08Obviously the hard work continues, but we need to also enjoy these moments.
46:12and yeah, another medal.
46:15So for us, so very happy.
46:18No, I think very important, no?
46:19It's a long career, long year, two years for Los Angeles.
46:23Our goal, so very happy, no?
46:25That says Jordi.
46:26And also, no, a third medal is a good place, but a lot of work to continue, so with a
46:31lot of energy to go.
46:34So there we have it, our gold medalists from Great Britain.
46:38And there you see it, a silver medal for Theresa Loffler and Christopher Herr,
46:42never having made it even into a medal race of a world championship before.
46:46And now they get a silver, and Jamar and Cardona, the outgoing world champions.
46:52And the celebrations carry on onshore.
46:56There's Matt Belcher, arguably the most successful 470 sailor of all time.
47:02And Igor, what are your thoughts?
47:04You're the class president of the 470, and nice words by Patine Harris,
47:09this is almost like coming to the spiritual home of the 470,
47:12and the biggest turnout of the 470 worlds in the new era of mixed sailing of men and women.
47:19So a lot to celebrate for the class.
47:21Yeah, exactly, exactly. We are super proud to be here in Enoshima,
47:28with the biggest fleet we ever had since the 470 went to mix.
47:35I'm super proud as a president that the fleet showed up in such big numbers.
47:42We have 28 nations here competing.
47:47We only did miss a bit of wind this week, to have like a perfect, perfect setup.
47:52But unfortunately that typhoon that passed by a few days ago,
47:55really, really messed up the things with wind.
47:58But still, I think we had a very, very nice event.
48:01And in the end, you know, best teams won.
48:06And looking at the Germans, celebrating with their teammates,
48:10and really looks like a victory for all the Germans,
48:14even those ones that must have been upset that they didn't make it into the medal race.
48:18So great team spirit there.
48:20Yeah, sure. They do train, three of them together,
48:25and they share the same coach, Steve.
48:27So they have a great chemistry in the team,
48:32and they are always, I would say, in the top the last couple of years.
48:37So good teamwork brings good results.
48:40Igor, it's been an absolute pleasure doing the commentary with you this week.
48:44What a great successful 470 World Championship this has been,
48:48for the class in general, and of course, particularly for our eventual winners from Great Britain,
48:55Marta Ann Wrigley, and Bettine Harris, who we saw there.
48:58So from me, Andy Rice, and from Iho Maronic, our Olympic champion from Croatia,
49:05that's it from Anishima. I hope you've enjoyed all the action,
49:09and the campaign continues for Los Angeles 2028.
49:13We're still two years away. A lot can happen.
49:16But right now, the form team are those winners,
49:20Marta Ann Wrigley and Bettine Harris.
49:23Bye for now. Catch up with you again in 470 World soon.
49:26Thank you, Andy, and bye, everyone. Bye from Anishima.
49:30Bye-bye.

Recommandations
