Venezuelan activist Yesenia Gonzalez is backing Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's tough stance against drug cartels, but at the same time she is warning the Trinidad and Tobago Government to halt plans to deport Venezuelan nationals.

Gonzalez, who has openly rejected the Nicolas Maduro regime in her homeland, insists that deportations could carry serious legal consequences for this country.

Nicole M Romany tells us more.

00:00Venezuelan activist Yacina Gonzalez is standing in solidarity with Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa
00:07as she joins the United States in waging war against Venezuela's drug cartels.
00:13The Prime Minister came under fire last week after defending a U.S. missile strike
00:19that destroyed a vessel allegedly carrying traffickers, saying kill them all violently.
00:25Speaking on the TV6 Morning Edition today, Gonzalez said that Prime Minister Passat-Bissessa
00:32is moving in the right direction.
00:46Gonzalez says Venezuelan nationals seeking asylum in Trinidad and Tobago
00:52are simply trying to live quietly.
00:55Venezuelan migrants who are in Trinidad right now, they are trying to maintain their peace,
01:01very quiet, taking out of this situation, the scare of the war, and basically praying that
01:08we get ready for this beast, this Maduro.
01:12She tells the Morning Edition, the Maduro regime continues to accuse the United States
01:18of being responsible for the dire conditions in Venezuela, but she insists that is not accurate.
01:25Because it really continues to destroy the country, hunger, all sorts of things happen in Venezuela.
01:32They only show wherever it is, but if you're going on the countryside, people in Hong Kong,
01:38they can't get food, it's very sad.
01:40We have destroyed the country.
01:42And they're blaming, they're blaming America and they're saying that now because they sanctioned Venezuela,
01:48that's why they suffer.
01:49So it is sanctioned Venezuela and that is what they suffer.
01:53My question is, how can they so reach?
01:56In light of the current situation, Gonzalez is also pleading with Prime Minister Pasad Bissasa
02:02not to proceed with deporting Venezuelan refugees seeking asylum in Trinidad and Tobago back to Venezuela.
02:09You have the right not to be removed as the risk violation, protection, deportation to the only way to get ready for Maduro.
02:20You understand?
02:20So you deport them then when you possibly will face war, you put them then at risk, right?
02:27And this whole thing could cause legal international implication and embarrassment
02:33to Trinidad and Tobago over the decision of the Prime Minister, Camila Bissasa.
02:38Nicole M. Romany, TV6 News.
