The President of Guyana has declared "Venezuela is a threat" to the "sovereignty" of his country, following the deployment of three U.S. Navy destroyers in the region.
And as Venezuela has issued its response to President Ali, neither of them has, so far, commented on the statement by the Prime Minister expressing full support for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for the U.S. deployment.
00:00The war of words between Trinidad and Tobago's closest South American neighbors has intensified over the deployment by the U.S. government, led by President Donald Trump, of three U.S. Navy-guided missile destroyers to the waters of Venezuela, as first reported by the U.S. media.
00:16It is a deployment which Prime Minister Kamala Posada says has the full support of the government of Trinidad and Tobago. As the Associated Press, Reuters and the L.A. Times have reported that the U.S. has ordered an amphibious squadron to the region as part of the deployment of the three U.S.-guided missile destroyers that will carry 4,500 service members, including 2,200 U.S. Marines, Ghana's President Dr. Irfan Ali had this to say during an election campaign meeting of his party on Sunday night.
00:46Our region is undergoing tremendous changes in the security framework. You're seen on social media. You're seen on international news. What is going on and who is involved? Venezuela is a trip to our sovereignty.
01:14On Saturday, Venezuela's Vice President, Delci Rodriguez, claimed that President Ali was the pawn of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
01:23On Friday, the U.S. Secretary of State, using the hashtag Guyana, reposted on his account on ex-formally known as Twitter, the statement by Guyana's government, which said,
01:32it views with grave concern the threat to peace and security in the region posed by transnational organized crime and narco-terrorism, often involving criminal networks, such as the Cartel de los Soles of Venezuela, designated as a terrorist organization by some countries in the region.
01:50Venezuela's Vice President called Guyana's statement an infection of lies about Venezuela.
01:54Vice President Roger Grez then said, quote,
01:57who runs Guyana, the ExxonMobil, they threaten the peace of Latin America and the Caribbean for their unmeasurable eagerness to steal from Venezuela at all costs.
02:07With their falses and lies that they try to justify the intervention of our motherland, the brave people of Bolivar will not allow it, end quote.
02:14Earlier this month, ExxonMobil announced that its total installed capacity in Guyana is above 900,000 barrels of oil per day.
02:23ExxonMobil also recently signed a production-sharing contract for block ultra-deep gas exploration with the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
02:31Venezuela's Vice President did not make any mention of Trinidad and Tobago in her statement.
02:35On Saturday, Prime Minister Passat-Bissette declared that the U.S. government's deployment of American military assets in the Caribbean region to destroy the terrorist drug cartels has the full support of the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
02:48On Sunday, Guyana's President did not make any mention of Trinidad and Tobago during his apparent reference to the U.S. military deployment in the waters near Venezuela.
02:57We have seen today international security forces are mobilized more than ever before.
03:09Our country needs leadership you can rely on, leadership you can trust, leadership that will ensure the sovereignty of our country, that will ensure the protection of our country.
03:25Prime Minister Passat-Bissette said in her statement that Trinidad and Tobago has always had good relations with the Venezuelan people and that will continue.
03:33However, Prime Minister Passat-Bissette said if the Maduro regime launches any attack against the Guyanese people or invades Guyanese territory
03:40and a request is made by the American government for access to Trinidadian territory to defend the people of Guyana,
03:47her government will unflinchingly provide them that access.
