This country continues on a downward spiral in its relationship with Venezuela.
That's the view of Senator and Former Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne, who calls it a "crisis of our own making."
Alicia Boucher has the details.
Transcript
00:00On September 11th, a warning from Venezuela's Vice President, Delce Rodriguez, to TNT saying,
00:07take it easy, do not dare, and do not think about it.
00:10A day after that, Prime Minister Kamala Poussard besets a responding, saying,
00:15I will dare to do what I have to do to keep the people of TNT safe.
00:19But she did underscore that there have been no discussions surrounding any invasion of Venezuela.
00:24While Senator and former Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, Dr. Amri Brown, says,
00:29The PNM is concerned.
00:31Our nation has found itself being drawn deeper and deeper into a crisis, a regional crisis, largely of our own making.
00:43The blame for which Dr. Brown lays mainly at the feet of Poussard besets a and her government.
00:49He says there are very important interests between the borders of TNT and Venezuela,
00:53including energy, maritime, search and rescue, the movement of commercial vessels, etc.
01:00From Dr. Brown's point of view, tensions are rising.
01:04To see where they are being ratcheted up week after week,
01:08to the point where you now have government ministers, cabinet ministers, on both sides of the border,
01:14resulting to petty and childish name-calling.
01:18No, we don't agree that people are calling the Prime Minister of Trina and Tobago by any derogatory name,
01:23but we've contributed to a downward spiral.
01:28The former Foreign Affairs Minister says the Prime Minister of this country,
01:31who holds the position of regional security lead in Caricom,
01:35should be the first one rallying Caricom together on matters of crisis or regional security implications.
01:41To form a common position and to share information accordingly.
01:48What she has done is the exact opposite of that.
01:52So not only is she not fulfilling her responsibilities in Puerto Spain and to this nation,
01:58she's also capitulating and not fulfilling her responsibilities.
02:05Asked if he believes the relationship between TNT and Venezuela can be salvaged,
02:11Dr. Brown says it has to be.
02:14Yes, a lot of damage has been done.
02:16Yes, the trajectory is very negative and worrisome.
02:21But fortunately, this country has as its leader of the opposition,
02:25Mrs. Penelope Beckles-Robinson, who has far more diplomatic and foreign policy experience,
02:36literally, than the sitting Prime Minister of this time.
02:40He adds that she's monitoring and responding accordingly.
02:44And whenever it is democratically allowed, the PNM will quote-unquote
02:48pick up the pieces and restore TNT's position as a mature, lawful and prudent broker regionally and globally.
