00:00I mean, I've learned a little bit more about it.
00:03You know, you and I have been doing this for a long time.
00:05Lovely Christy's brother is a football coach.
00:08Yeah.
00:08Not a head coach, but an assistant football coach.
00:13Lehigh?
00:13Lehigh and has been many places before that.
00:17And so we talk about this a lot, like the way that a coach's brain works.
00:21And, again, I don't want to paint every coach as exactly the same,
00:25but a lot of them really are kind of cut from the same cloth.
00:28And I think the best, if you want to put a face on what I'm talking about,
00:31think about Belichick.
00:33And I actually think these guys.
00:35We're on a Cincinnati.
00:36Yeah, they are much more touchy-feely and emotional
00:39than they'll let on in front of a podium.
00:41But when there's a game on Sunday,
00:45like everything to them is a yes or no question.
00:49Is Christian ready?
00:50No.
00:50Okay.
00:52Is Brian?
00:53Yes.
00:53All right.
00:54Got it.
00:56To the lab.
00:57Totally.
00:57And so the whole, like, let's expand on this
01:01and help us sort of feel a certain way
01:05and give us assurances or not assurances
01:09and tell us what is this going to look like in October.
01:14Like, I mean, their brain fries immediately and purposefully
01:20as soon as you start going down that road.
01:23So I think that's where Kyle was trying to keep it.
01:26Listen again, and then we'll take your calls.
01:28Did not practice.
01:29Was he able to do any team drills yesterday, Kyle?
01:32Or what happened during practice yesterday with him?
01:35Yeah, he did a limited amount of stuff in practice yesterday.
01:38What's your level of concern with his physical condition
01:41and his ability to play on Sunday?
01:43Um, it's questionable.
01:47Questionable concern.
01:48I'm not going to say anything about Christian Gus
01:50or any of our players' injuries.
01:53Is it fair to say, I mean, because he wasn't on the injury report Wednesday,
01:57that this is something that occurred yesterday?
01:59Yeah, he came up yesterday.
02:00Okay.
02:01So do you see how he's trying to almost label everything?
02:04Well, what happened yesterday?
02:05Well, it was limited.
02:06What happened?
02:07Well, what about now?
02:08Questionable.
02:09Right.
02:10What's your concern?
02:11Questionable concern.
02:12Questionable.
02:13Okay.
02:14All right.
02:15What do we do with that?
02:16Well, we do what we do with it,
02:18which is we parse every word and we listen to his tone.
02:21And his tone was very terse and very short.
02:24And so we read into that that he's frustrated
02:26and that he knows more than we know.
02:29And so we can leap to all these conclusions
02:30and just hearing him and knowing the rhythm of the week.
02:34And, you know, the week this week is Tuesday they're off,
02:38Wednesday they practice, Kyle talks,
02:40Thursday it's Salah and Kubiak and Purdy,
02:44and then today Shanahan again.
02:46And if you're the head coach
02:47and you're going through a week of preparation,
02:50I'm sure you don't want to do any of this,
02:52but the league mandates it.
02:53And so you've got a star player,
02:55a top end of the first round fantasy player,
02:58and everybody wants to know the answer.
03:00And honestly, the answer is not one that he can readily give.
03:04He's not a doctor.
03:06He's not a fortune teller.
03:08And all he can say is...
03:10I'm not a doctor, so...
03:12And, you know, he was questionable.
03:13And what's your concern?
03:14It's a questionable concern.
03:16It's almost like...
03:17He's questionable.
03:17Right.
03:17And this is not actually how Kyle feels
03:20because he is a human being,
03:22but it's such an interesting way to ask it.
03:25What's your concern level?
03:26I bet Kyle's like none
03:28because that's not what I do.
03:29I don't do concern.
03:32Concern, that's next week
03:35or the week after that
03:36or the contract or the career
03:39or the what's going to happen for Christmas.
03:42That, like, I don't do concern.
03:44Is he playing?
03:45No?
03:45Okay.
03:46No, no, no.
03:46Let's go play the game.
03:48And, yeah, they want Friday to be about the game.
03:51And sometimes Friday's not about the game.
03:54And I hate that.
03:56I hate that, too.
03:57You know, we did a whole summit yesterday
03:59that was getting ready for the games
04:01and then half the summit
04:02wasn't even about the games.
04:04It's now all about Christian and his calf.
04:07Yep.
04:07And that's not what the coach wants.
04:10It's not what the 49ers want.
04:11It's not what we want,
04:12but you can't help where your brain is.
04:14That's what we're thinking about right now.
04:16Well, and when you're a fan
04:17and your fan brain is
04:19you want everybody all full bore
04:21and, you know, you said it last week
04:23and you were right when you said it.
04:25Like, all this talk about injury concerns,
04:28it's a bunch of hooey.
04:30They have no injury concerns.
04:31And then now, here we are on a Friday
04:34with the game two days away
04:35and now they've got the big injury concern
04:38and it's Christian McCaffrey again.
04:40And when the official injury report comes out,
04:43and I know that they do one today
04:45and I bet he's listed as questionable.
04:47If he's listed as out on Friday,
04:50two days in advance,
04:51well, that is alarms.
04:53And Tom Pellicero,
04:54you played the sound last segment.
04:55There are no alarm bells going off.
04:58So, yeah, if he's questionable,
05:00that tells me that he's going to fly with them
05:02and then you go through tomorrow
05:04and then you get ready for Sunday
05:05and you check him out
05:06and he either plays or he doesn't play.
05:09But, I mean, if he is listed as out early,
05:12that to me would be alarm bells.
05:14I agree with you.
05:15I'll also say this, though.
05:17Like, part of me thinking
05:19that he's definitely not playing on Sunday,
05:22if you watch football a lot
05:24and you do the fantasy
05:25and you're tracking injuries
05:26and all of these things,
05:28if someone doesn't practice on Friday,
05:31they very rarely play.
05:34Very, it's not out of the question,
05:37but in general, Friday's the day.
05:40Like, Wednesday,
05:42ah, let's hold him out.
05:43Thursday, ah, maybe we'll do some stuff on the side.
05:46Friday, I need to get my game plan in.
05:50Who's playing?
05:51Let's go practice.
05:52You miss Friday, you out.
05:54That's normally the process.
05:57So the fact that they're going to go DNP on today
06:00makes me think it's OUT for Sunday.
06:05So, but we'll see.
06:07We'll see.
06:08This is obviously a rare circumstance.
06:11Let's go to the phones.
06:12You listen to Kyle.
06:14How does that make you feel?
06:15What goes through your mind when you hear it?
06:16888-957-9570.
06:19Let's go to Guru in San Jose.
06:21Hi, Guru.
06:22Thanks for the call.
06:24Yeah, hello, Dan.
06:25Thanks for taking my call once again.
06:27Yeah, Guru.
06:27Yeah, so, I mean, I'm extremely distraught
06:33with, you know, what I'm about to say right now.
06:37But after you guys released the news yesterday
06:42at the summit, a couple hours later,
06:46I got on the phone with my cousin.
06:47He's a sports medicine doctor in Kansas.
06:53And, yeah, drip, I guess.
06:54But, yeah, I got on the phone with him.
07:02And, yeah, I said, did you hear the news?
07:06And he was like, yeah, I heard it.
07:07And it's extremely disturbing
07:10given CMC's injury history.
07:15And he was saying that, obviously,
07:18we don't know the details.
07:19And we don't know the severity of the calf injury.
07:22But he said that he would be extremely surprised
07:26if he played on Sunday.
07:28And he thinks that the median outcome here
07:31is that he actually goes on IR after this week
07:35and misses actually several weeks
07:38just because of his injury history
07:40and the relationship between the calf and the Achilles.
07:44That's what he thinks.
07:45But he said, I would hold out hope to CEP practices today.
07:51And what is the reaction online?
07:54So, obviously, you start off in the morning
07:56with the Pelissero, you know, report.
07:59And then you see Christian DiCaprio dress,
08:02but not practice.
08:04And then this Kyle Shanahan press conference
08:08really dampens, like, any hope that,
08:13I mean, to me, like, that's what it felt like, right?
08:16Even though he never really said anything,
08:18not really saying anything is saying something.
08:22It is, yeah.
08:23You can make that argument.
08:24Yeah, go ahead.
08:25And so, yeah, so, I mean, I just felt in that moment,
08:32like, holy crap, like, maybe my cousin
08:35is on to something there.
08:37I think, Guru, thanks, man.
08:39I think definitely that whatever your cousin's telling you
08:43to me sounds very reasonable, very reasonable.
08:47And, obviously, our own doc here, Doc Pandia,
08:50who comes on the station all the time,
08:52came on the morning roast and had some similar reactions.
08:54We'll play that for you coming up next.
08:56I will tell you, though, that, like,
09:00this whole idea of, like, are we reading Kyle
09:02for optimism or pessimism?
09:05Kyle and others around the Niners
09:06are going to purposefully attempt to do neither
09:08because they don't want to set an expectation,
09:12whether it be good or bad.
09:14They don't want to tell you he's going to be out for a while
09:17if he's not going to be out for a while.
09:18And they certainly don't want to make you think,
09:20no, there's a really good shot that he plays.
09:22Like, we think he might play, and then he doesn't play
09:24because that takes the whole public on this kind of wave.
09:29Yep.
09:29So, anyway.
09:30Under promise, over deliver,
09:32and I'm just looking at the NFL.com injury report
09:35that's been refreshed.
09:37He is listed as questionable.
09:39Jordan James, doubtful.
09:40Jordan Watkins, doubtful.
09:41And I know McCaffrey has spoken, Grandy,
09:44and I know that you've looked at some of the tweets
09:46and the things he's said.
09:47Yeah, what do we got?
09:47And McCaffrey is, at least he was,
09:50is available in the locker room.
09:51This comes courtesy of Matt Maioco,
09:54Niners Insider for NBC Sports Bay Area.
09:56He writes that Christian McCaffrey says he feels great physically.
10:00He said he's proud of himself for feeling something Thursday
10:02and doing the smart thing, pulling himself out of practice.
10:05He adds, quote,
10:07I've been there before,
10:08and I've been my own worst enemy in situations like that.
10:11Okay.
10:12That's an interesting quote.
10:14And on our Twitter page,
10:16at 957thegame,
10:17McCaffrey was asked if he's going to play.
10:20I would imagine something along those lines.
10:21He said, quote,
10:22if you can play, you play.
10:24It's as simple as that.
10:25So kind of a non-answer there.
10:26It is.
10:27But he's speaking, which seems encouraging.
10:30Well, that is actually,
10:32yeah, way to go, Lucas.
10:33Way to contribute.
10:34Like, that to me,
10:37of everything that was just said,
10:40the most important part is the unsaid.
10:42The fact that he's speaking.
10:43They let him talk.
10:45And you remember my favorite moment.
10:47Like, you know exactly what I'm going to say.
10:48Totally.
10:49Which is three years ago when Steph Curry was injured,
10:53leading into the playoffs,
10:54the Warriors brought him right over to a live broadcast of Stiney and Goo.
10:59And they sat him next to Stiney and Goo.
11:01And nobody knew what his injury status was.
11:03And the second they did the interview,
11:05I go, oh, he's playing.
11:06He's playing.
11:07You don't talk to people when you're injured.
11:09Now, this is different because he's just in his locker.
11:12It's different, but.
11:13So, I don't think he's playing Sunday.
11:14Well, this is what McCaffrey said,
11:16according to Cam Inman.
11:18Nothing serious, I can tell you that.
11:20I feel like I said I feel great about where I'm at.
11:23Unfortunately, when you have an injury history that I have,
11:25you know, sometimes when you don't practice,
11:27things get blown out of proportion.
11:29But like I said, I feel great.
11:31Well, McCaffrey.
11:32Listen, to me, there's something there on two fronts.
11:35It's what he's saying and that he's saying it publicly are both good things.
11:40And those go in line with the fact that he had a helmet and shoes and pants and a shirt
11:44and went out on the field and ran around today.
11:47Like, if it was super serious, would you let Christian go run around on the field today?
11:52I wouldn't.
11:53I get that they're not.
11:53When would you let him talk after, right?
11:55I wouldn't let him talk after.
11:56Right.
11:57Because now, to the point you just made about under-promise, over-deliver, or vice versa,
12:04like Christian, his words are going to make people feel some sort of optimism.
12:10Add in, and I think this is an important one,
12:13your first two games are both on turf.
12:15So, maybe that's the new goal.
12:18I don't know.
12:19I don't know.
12:20Maybe they're like, how about home opener in three weeks, two weeks now?
12:24Maybe that's the goal.
12:25I don't know.
12:27But I do take from Christian both talking and from what he said that in this moment,
12:34and it's only a moment, but in this moment, this player and the 49ers are not of the belief
12:41that Christian is just not going to play football this year.
12:44Agreed.
12:44And Cam Inman points out that he is questionable,
12:47and last year he was questionable entering the opener, and he missed eight games.
12:51So, there's that.
12:52But interesting what you said about the turf,
12:55and I think Spadoni said it yesterday during our summit,
12:57talking about the first two games on turf,
12:59and the Seattle turf is different than the New Orleans turf.
13:02For sure.
13:03The New Orleans turf might be the worst turf in all of football,
13:06outside of where the Giants and Jets play.
13:09Yeah, the Jets-Giants stadium is bad.
13:10Yeah, out there, so, I mean, but New Orleans is where that turf is like old school,
13:15maybe a half an inch thick, barely on top of concrete.
13:19Is it still?
13:20I thought they got rid of all that.
13:21They might have, but...
13:23I know it's inside, but they're not doing that anymore, are they?
13:26Probably not like they used to when you had, like, the old AstroTurf, right?
13:31That was the old...
13:32Yeah.
13:32That was the old surface.
13:33For real.
13:34I'm sure it's better now, but still, you're dealing with turf, which is on top of cement.
13:3825 years ago, you had turf surfaces in the NFL,
13:43and guys will tell you it felt no different than playing on your street.
13:47It felt absolutely no different than playing out on your front street.
13:50I don't...
13:51They don't have that anymore.
13:52I can't speak to what each level of turf is like.
13:56I think you're probably right that Seattle's is a little softer.
13:59Doc Pandy was asked this question on the morning roast with regard to the first two games.
14:03Being on turf.
14:04Huge factor for this is that we know that with lower extremity injuries, artificial turf,
14:09there's a huge several-fold increase of injury as well, too.
14:12So you don't want him coming off a PCL, having Achilles tendonitis.
14:16Beginning of the season, like, it's a setup for things to go wrong.
14:19So that may be another factor where they're like, look, you're a little bit sore.
14:22We're playing on artificial turf, and hey, maybe let's take one more week off
14:25just to really make sure things are happening well for him.
14:28So, yeah, I think there are multiple factors that go into what we do to preserve his body
14:32and not get into this problem where that Achilles tendonitis, you know, kind of flares up again,
14:36and then you're dealing with, you know, six, seven, eight, nine weeks.
14:39Remember, we're also dealing with any time any of these people speak,
14:44and this is a point I love to make about whenever everyone gets all ticked off
14:47about Steve Kerr's rotations, and they feel like somehow we talk about it
14:52as if Steve Kerr is the czar of the Warriors, and nobody else is weighing in on this.
14:56He's just out here willy-nilly doing stuff by himself.
14:59Same thing here.
15:00Christian McCaffrey's legs are a multimillion-dollar investment
15:04for a multibillion-dollar company.
15:06This is not something that Christian is just going to be like,
15:08well, I want to play, so I'm playing.
15:11Like, this is coaches and doctors and executives.
15:16Everybody is all in on this.
15:18So when one of them speaks, I tend to feel like they are speaking for many.
15:23This is a collective decision, and when I hear Christian say,
15:27I've been here before, and I've been my own worst enemy in situations like that,
15:36it tells me that collectively the 49ers have told Christian,
15:41going forward, we can't be Mr. Tough Guy and push through this stuff.
15:47So I take from that Christian, I bet, thinks he can play.
15:52And the 49ers are like, ah, let's wait.
15:56And they've got Christian on board now,
15:58so I don't know if anything definitive has been said about Sunday.
16:02Again, my guess is he's not going to play.
16:05I very much doubt it because, listen to what he's saying,
16:09they are deciding that what they need to do is be very, very cautious and careful,
16:16which maybe they didn't do last year.
16:18But even though they waited eight weeks, what happened when he came back?
16:23He got hurt again.
16:23What was the calf, though?
16:24Yeah, he got hurt again.
16:25No, I know, but it was the knee.
16:26But they're all connected.
16:27They're all connected.
16:28Well, I don't think that the knee injury was connected at all to the calf.
16:31I mean, the knee just kind of crumbled on him.
16:34He also didn't look right, even before the knee.
16:36Well, he started looking good in that game.
16:37It's kind of like Iyuk when he got hurt.
16:39He was actually starting to play pretty well.
16:42And McCaffrey, the same thing.
16:43He was starting to show a little bit of burst.
16:45And that was a game that was in the snow.
16:47And his knee just gave out.
16:49I don't think that the knee collapsing, the PCL, had anything to do with the calf.
16:53And I'll defer to Doc Pondia as far as whether or not those two things are related.
16:57But I look at this, and you're right about, you know,
17:01if it's a question of protecting him from himself, then maybe you have to do that.
17:07And you did that last year, and he missed eight games.
17:09And by the time he came back, the season was largely already in jeopardy.
17:14I've been here before, and I've been my own worst enemy in situations like that.
17:21He pulled himself out of practice.
17:23He pulled himself out of practice yesterday.
17:26Yeah.
17:26Felt something, and he listened to his body.
17:29I think that's, I mean, that's a message.
17:32I bet you could relate to that.
17:34I can relate to that.
17:35Like, we don't do a great job of that as human beings.
17:39It's considered, in our minds, it's considered soft.
17:42Especially when you're younger.
17:43Like, now you're north of 50, and I'm closer to 60,
17:46and now it's a lot easier for me to pull the plug if something is like, you know,
17:52it's easier now where, okay, I'm not going to push through something
17:56just because I want to show the world and be a tough guy.
17:58McCaffrey's not even 30 yet.
18:00No, I'm...
18:00And he's a pro football player.
18:01I'm with you in terms of deciding how I go about deciding what I am
18:05and I'm not going to do, but I'll give you,
18:08and this is the dumbest example of all time,
18:10but it's what had popped into my head.
18:12Like, you know, go to last year, go to the knockout tournament.
18:16It was the exact same thing, by the way.
18:18Yep.
18:18My calf started barking at me.
18:20Oh, boy.
18:21It was barking at me, but dibs, I was hitting.
18:25And I got down to the finals.
18:26No, but I should have stopped.
18:28I totally should have stopped because who knows what was going to happen next.
18:32Excuses.
18:33Caps are tricky.
18:34No, no excuses.
18:35I was shooting well.
18:37I got beat.
18:38Calf had nothing to do with it, but it was probably stupid.
18:41If there was a listener and not Grandy, you probably would have shut it down.
18:46Oh.
18:47Facts.
18:48No.
18:49Grandy's in there eating his turkey sandwich.
18:51No.
18:51Back-to-back titles.
18:52I wouldn't have.
18:54Honestly.
18:54You would have let Joe from Livermore get the W.
18:57I really wouldn't have.
18:59I'm telling you, in our minds in these moments, it's not even that there was, like, he's a
19:0449er.
19:05He's the best player on the 49ers.
19:07This is a big deal.
19:07There's a lot at stake.
19:09There's nothing at stake with what we all do.
19:11But if you're going for a run and you cramp up, there's something that goes through our
19:16heads as human beings where you're like, I can run through this.
19:20Why?
19:21I don't know.
19:22I don't know.
19:22I don't know who we're trying to impress.
19:25Usually just ourselves.
19:26I don't know.
19:27Sometimes you can run through it.
19:29Yeah, sometimes.
19:30But why?
19:31What the hell did you get out of that?
19:33Like, but that's what we do.
19:34It's just, it's who we are.
19:37Fight through it.
19:40It's kind of like, it's what we teach.
19:43It's not even just physical stuff.
19:44It's anything.
19:45Fight through it.
19:47I think it's innate in who we are.
19:50What's the nature of being human beings?
19:53It's like you survive.
19:54Like, being a human being or being an animal, being a living creature, there's a lot of just
20:01absolute survival.
20:02Like, survive and live and live another day.
20:05And I'm not saying that this is life or death for McCaffrey, but in terms of being an NFL
20:09player, you want to go out there and you want to show and do what you can do.
20:12And sometimes you have to listen to your body, and that's what he's doing.
20:16Christian says he feels great physically.
20:20And he's proud of himself for pulling himself out of practice.
20:25I don't know.
20:26That's kind of interesting.
20:27Yep.
20:27It's a little different.
20:28It's different.
20:29I don't know if it leads to anything optimistic, but again, the most optimistic thing that has
20:36happened in the last 24 hours is that Christian spoke into a microphone.
20:39That's what I would say.
20:40It's uplifting knowing that he's at least feeling good enough to go out there and face
20:45the reporters.
20:46And just the cynic in me is thinking about Jawan Jennings and thinking about Charverius
20:52Ward, where last year in the offseason, McCaffrey was not in camp and he got an extension.
20:59He got an extension back in June of last year.
21:01And Mooney Ward, no, you don't get any money.
21:04And then this year, you got Jawan Jennings.
21:06Well, we're going to give you just a tiny, we're going to give you a little bit of a
21:09dollop of money.
21:11But you know, you gave McCaffrey fresh money last year.
21:14You gave him an extension.
21:15Right.
21:15And since then, he's barely been able to play.
21:17And now he's hurt again.
21:18But you know about the guarantees in the NFL.
21:21I think this is important to bring up to people because I am hearing some of this.
21:26Ooh, you Niners, you're so stupid.
21:28You gave him an extension.
21:29First of all, when they gave him an extension, I have no idea what the status of his health
21:34was.
21:34We have no idea.
21:35That all happened well before the idea of Christian really being hurt was even a thing.
21:42And it was coming off of being Offensive Player of the Year.
21:45So what dummy wouldn't have still wanted him on the team?
21:47Plus, there's an out after this year.
21:51Okay?
21:51So if Christian does not play football or he's not good anymore, Niners can go bye-bye right
21:58after this season.
21:59I know there's two more years on the deal, but there are outcomes after this season.
22:04So they can move on.
22:06And that's not going to kill them.
22:08It's $14 million in dead cap.
22:10Yeah, so whatever.
22:11Fine.
22:12They've got that.
22:12I don't think the extension, I don't think that's going to hurt them.
22:20I don't think that's going to hurt them.
22:21It's not going to hurt them financially, but if you're a player on that team and you wanted
22:26money and you didn't get it and McCaffrey got $24 million and now he's hurt again, I'm
22:32saying based on what Charverius Ward said last year where he was feeling some type of
22:37way about the way things went last season and now you're Juwan and you had to basically
22:41go with hat in your hand to get $3 million?
22:44Sorry, y'all.
22:45Your name's not Christian McCaffrey.
22:46Whatever.
22:47I'm just saying it possibly is a thing.
