00:00There's another player in Niners camp that seems to be sort of leading the debate area and I want

00:08to dig into this a little bit because I don't know the same way you don't know and all of you

00:14listening you don't know you don't none of us know what Christian McCaffrey is feeling in his legs

00:19and and and we don't know if he's quote lost a step or gained a step we've had reports that say

00:27he looks exactly like 2023 David Lombardi says he's absolutely 100% clearly the best player in

00:35camp um then our guy Zach just called on the way home and said Christian couldn't find any space

00:40today and what's fascinating to me is simply where we come from in terms of the believability

00:48of the idea of Christian McCaffrey returning to form and I have a bunch of sound that I want to

00:54play for you to add into this conversation but let me ask you that first how believable do you

01:00find just the idea of Christian at age 29 still having a season where he looks like full-blown

01:07Christian McCaffrey I have a high level of believability he's a guy who has always been

01:13in great shape he's come in in great shape and he didn't really have that much of a tough year last

01:21year from a physicality standpoint he only played in what four games and his season was over so I

01:27think that he comes in this year fresh and motivated certainly fit and 29 is not that old as a running

01:34back so I have great faith that he can come back and maybe he won't be as quite as good as he was two

01:40years ago where he led the league and rushing that's unfair to put that as his bar but I could see

01:46McCaffrey having you know 1500 yards combined receiving and rushing and more than 12 touchdowns

01:53and having a very good year um yeah like I I see at age 29 and I know a lot of people do the whole

01:59like as soon as a running back turns 30 they're dust which is not true it's true for some it's not

02:04true for others Derek Henry is 31 Curtis Martin was wonderful after his 30th birthday other guys don't

02:11make it anywhere near that you know we had somebody call in earlier today and talk about Todd Gurley

02:15Gurley was incredible when he was 24 and 25 and then he stunk and was out of the league like it's

02:21crazy the way this can go I think Christian's got some pretty good sustainability as far as his football

02:27abilities but I'll also acknowledge we're now into multiple major injuries for Christian here's what

02:35he said today with regard to his health yeah I feel great man I mean every day don't take it for

02:40granted been through a lot as far as injuries go in my career and have had to come back from a lot and

02:44anytime you get through one of those practices and feel good I get really excited but I don't take

02:48it for granted and know that you know every day I got to work on a bunch of different things to

02:51just keep it that way okay so he states I feel great and I don't take that for granted at all because of

02:57of what I've been through um but listen to this Baldy was on with the morning show check out some of the

03:03things that he had to say about Christian he had 50 carries last year after basically being the best

03:10player in the league the year before we talked about it I don't know if you're going to be able

03:13to see I mean I watched him warm up before the Green Bay game last year and he looked fine but

03:18he wasn't fine you know he looked like he was the same guy warming up all of the drills that he does

03:23and all the things he puts himself through I thought he missed a hole last year the week before Green

03:28Bay and I put it on tape and Christian was like he came up to me and he's like he watches these

03:35stuff he's like man I missed that Baldy you're right he goes I should have done this and so

03:39is he right okay but I miss this does that mean is he right I kind of look at last year though and

03:48also I don't know how you felt because some of this is just by feel but when Christian did return

03:54and did play I was like he doesn't look the same he doesn't look the same but you and I went out to

04:02practice in OTAs and I was like oh Christian looks fast again yeah and there's no way for me to measure

04:10that and quantify that or tell you for sure that I'm right but my perception was that that last year

04:17when he played I was like he doesn't look fast and this year when we've watched him play other

04:22reporters too he looks fast again yeah but a lot of people still don't want to believe it well and

04:27David Lombardi who joins us periodically said that he thinks that he might have gained a step and not

04:31lost a step but gained a step and you know the different reports and Zach Green our co-worker

04:36today was out there said he didn't have any room to move and all the rest of it I think last year was

04:41partly he wasn't right and he had the bilateral Achilles tendonitis that he finally got over and when he

04:48played I don't think that he was as sharp as he would have been had he played week one he missed

04:54about two months so when he came back 13 carries for 39 that's not McCaffrey 19 for 79 a little

05:02closer to what you'd expect 11 for 31 and then the Buffalo game he had seven for 53 and then he fell

05:08down on his seventh and final carry of the game and of the year so I think it's partly he wasn't quite

05:15100 and also their offensive line did not have a good year and you didn't have Trent Williams for

05:21a lot of it and in general they had a very difficult time running the ball and I think that was indicative

05:27of McCaffrey's numbers yeah no doubt about it so Baldy was asked if he thinks CMC at this moment

05:33has lost a step or not I was talking to Aaron Jones yesterday for the Minnesota Vikings and the thing

05:39about Aaron and Christian together they both came out the same year came out 2017 those guys have

05:45tremendous vision it's their greatest strength they don't miss holes I don't know how they do it

05:50Aaron Jones these guys going in their ninth year now I don't know if you could tell in a scrimmage

05:56situation if Christian is going to hit every hole if he's going to hit it like Superman you know with

06:02his cape on I don't know if he is that guy yet or not I don't know if he knows that because usually

06:08most guys don't recognize either the loss of step or anything else until they do I played with Eric

06:16Dickerson I didn't know he lost a step but he lost a step after an injury in 1989 he wasn't the same guy

06:23the last few years of his career so I'm not sure what we're going to be able to make out of it right

06:27now dibs more baldy more baldy on CMC Christian has had you know his body has worn down I mean

06:33that's what that all of that inflammation he had last year is a result of did he shake that all off

06:39I mean we I don't know if you can lose a step because we've seen Dalvin Cook lose a step and

06:43he wasn't very good and he went to a couple different teams and he's out of the league I mean

06:47there's just so many hits that any of these guys have in them and you just don't know when the drop

06:52off is going to happen because I have a feeling it's going to be pretty severe 50 carries isn't

06:58you know isn't much of a sample let's see I think we got to get into the season Joe before we we realize

07:04what he is and what he isn't at this point I mean that's all a pretty sobering sound with regard to

07:09Christian McCaffrey except how do you blend it up against not just Lombardi Matt Barrows was on our

07:17station yesterday said the exact same thing he said Christian McCaffrey looks like 2023 and while

07:24I love baldy and he's phenomenal at what he does and his football knowledge is all there he's not at

07:31Niner camp every day but the people who are at Niner camp every day every year say that Christian

07:37looks like he did two years ago and that's great it's all fine and good and it's August and they're

07:42yet to play actual tackle football in even a preseason game and Shanahan said today that you

07:49know no surprise the majority of the starters won't play on Saturday I would bet McCaffrey's one of those

07:54guys who just doesn't play and so why would you exactly I do think when you get to week one assuming

08:01he's able to make it to week one this year unlike last year when he didn't and then you start to see

08:05him out there week one week four week seven that's when I think you can get much more of a fair

08:12measurement on how he's doing and you know Baldy even made that point you know 50 carries last

08:16year tough to really look at that sample and say prohibitively like how Christian McCaffrey was doing

08:23in just 50 carries well I don't think you I mean he wasn't healthy he wasn't right right you know what

08:28I mean like I that was a little bit of a pit in my stomach watching him last year even before he got

08:35hurt in Buffalo you just read the numbers he didn't look like himself he didn't look anything like

08:40himself um and so yeah maybe he won't again but all I can tell you is that those of us who've been

08:49to any of these practices he looks explosive will it translate to games I don't know but it did better

08:55he looks explosive in ways that he did not last year yeah and it had better uh translate to games

09:01because behind him is a lot of inexperience and youth a lot of questions yeah
