00:00is that Christian McCaffrey was out with a calf.
00:02So, a couple things.
00:04We're going to play the Shanahan for you again.
00:06Then Lucas is going to jump in with a synopsis
00:09of what Christian said in his locker today
00:11because there's a little bit more that we haven't quite heard yet.
00:16And the audio's not great, so we're not going to play it.
00:18But I think the tone from Christian is really important in this conversation.
00:24Here's Kyle Shanahan back and forth about McCaffrey's injury
00:27and practice today.
00:29Did not practice.
00:30Was he able to do any team drills yesterday, Kyle?
00:33Or what happened during practice yesterday with him?
00:36Yeah, he did a limited amount of stuff in practice yesterday.
00:39What's your level of concern with his physical condition
00:42and his ability to play on Sunday?
00:46It's questionable.
00:48Questionable concern.
00:49I'm not going to say anything about Christian Cuss
00:51or any of our players' injuries.
00:54Is it fair to say, I mean, because he wasn't on the injury report Wednesday,
00:58that this is something that occurred yesterday?
01:00Yeah, it came up yesterday.
01:01Yep, came up yesterday.
01:02So that's the bad part.
01:05But this day has already been this wave that we're riding.
01:09Rollercoaster.
01:10Because at first it was, you wake up and you're like,
01:13oh crap, everything's gone to hell.
01:15Then Christian runs out onto the practice field.
01:17And everyone's like, yeah, he's back.
01:20And then he never joined his teammates to actually practice.
01:22You're like, oh, that's too bad.
01:24And then Kyle comes in.
01:26And you're like, hey, did he practice?
01:28No, I don't have to tell you.
01:29Kyle, yeah, you do.
01:30Okay, fine, I'll tell you.
01:31He didn't practice.
01:32Ooh, Kyle's terse.
01:34He's quick with his answers.
01:35That doesn't make everyone feel good.
01:37But then, then Christian talks at his locker.
01:41And in sports, when you talk,
01:43that's usually a better sign than not with regard to injury.
01:46Because injured players usually don't talk, right?
01:49When you've got something really going on, you don't talk.
01:52Think about Juwan on Wednesday afternoon.
01:55We all thought he would talk.
01:55He didn't talk.
01:56Why?
01:57Well, because there was about to be news that was going to break a couple hours later.
02:00Christian spoke.
02:02Lucas, what did you want to add from what Vic Taffer reported about Christian at his locker?
02:09Well, yeah, Vic Taffer posted a minute-plus long video of McCaffrey talking about everything,
02:14answering questions from all the media.
02:16Unfortunately, the background noise, guys, just changing and talking.
02:20It's a little bit un-airable, the McCaffrey audio.
02:24So, instead, I'll just do my own reporting on Vic Taffer's reporting of Christian McCaffrey talking.
02:28Okay, I like that.
02:29And a lot of it, you guys already read some of the quotes by Wagner and Cam,
02:33I think Cam Inman and some of the others that have been out there.
02:35And it's the nothing serious.
02:37This is, again, McCaffrey saying, nothing serious.
02:39I feel great about where I'm at.
02:41He referenced his own injury history.
02:43He said, quote, unfortunately, when you don't practice, it can get blown out of proportion.
02:48But like I said, I feel great.
02:50He also was asked about turf.
02:51You guys mentioned the fact that the 49ers play the first two games on turf this season.
02:56It's not something he's thought about and, quote, should be all right.
02:59The one thing that I did note that was interesting, he was asked about the calf injury last year,
03:03that this time last year he was dealing with this and all the reports where he was going to be fine for week one.
03:09He was asked, is this something similar?
03:11And he answered, it's totally different.
03:14Pretty much it's totally different.
03:15And he hasn't even thought about last year.
03:18So, I thought that was positive that he didn't equate the two.
03:21Whatever's going on right now with this calf injury and whatever he was dealing with last year.
03:24And now we need to run all of that through our filter because, like, from the horse's mouth is usually the last place to get news.
03:31Well, except for, in this case, if last year it was bilateral Achilles tendonitis, which is lower calf,
03:39maybe this is an upper calf, which, in fact, is unrelated to what he went through last year.
03:44And I don't know if I – I guess I'll take him at his word because it's his own body.
03:49And you're right, the fact that he talked today is good news that he's not so badly hurt that he's going to go into a shell.
03:56But if he's saying that this is different than last year, maybe it is just a garden variety calf cramp or a calf something
04:05that is totally different from what he had last year, which was Achilles tendonitis.
04:10Let's go ahead and compare this year to last year, then.
04:12Let's do that, okay?
04:15Did Christian speak at all for eight weeks last year?
04:18I don't believe so.
04:20I'd be hard-pressed to remember.
04:21We're already up 1-0 this year on last year.
04:23Right.
04:24I think that is something.
04:27Is it everything?
04:28No.
04:29Is it significant?
04:30I'm not sure.
04:32It's something.
04:33That is something.
04:34I do think you can hang a little hat.
04:36It might only be a beanie cap, but you can hang a hat on that.
04:40Christian spoke.
04:41Now, what he said was also very positive.
04:45He said, I feel great physically.
04:46I've learned to listen to my body, so that's what I'm doing here.
04:50I'm proud of myself for sitting out of practice because in the past, I would have pushed through that.
04:56And this doesn't feel anything like last year.
05:00And the fact that we're playing on turf, I'm not surprised.
05:02He was like, that never even crossed my mind because that's the most anti-football player thing I've ever heard.
05:07These guys are not built that way to where they're like, no, I'm healthy.
05:10I'm ready to go.
05:11Yeah, but Christian, we're playing on turf.
05:13Oh, then never mind.
05:14I'll wait for grass.
05:15Like, that's not going to happen.
05:17He's going to want to play if he feels like he can play.
05:19I'll put it this way.
05:21When we were done with Kyle, I was 100% sure that Christian was not playing on Sunday.
05:27Now I'm 90.
05:31I'm 90 that he's not playing?
05:33But I'm going to leave the door open because he spoke.
05:36Bruno Mars.
05:37I'm going to leave the door open because he spoke and because of what he said.
05:41I still think that the tone of the whole thing is, hey, Christian, don't push it.
05:46So I think that's what's going to win out.
05:49But I'm going to leave the door open because he spoke.
05:52Yeah, I'm going to put it at a straight up 50-50.
05:54Oh, wow.
05:55That's super optimistic of you.
05:57Super optimistic.
05:58And it's for two reasons.
05:59One, because he spoke.
06:01And two, because, and I take him at his word, if this is a different injury or a different ailment rather than what he went through last year,
06:09if this is just an upper calf thing where, I mentioned this yesterday during the summit,
06:15those of us who are a little bit older, sometimes you wake up and it's like, oh, my God, I got my calf.
06:20It's a calf cramp or whatever it is.
06:22And you work your way through it.
06:23It's like, okay, it feels better.
06:25And sometimes you wake up, it's like, oh, boy, this is a new ailment.
06:28This one might be two to three days.
06:30So I take him at his word if it's a different thing, if it's not bilateral Achilles tendonitis,
06:36if it's just a calf that's maybe barking a little bit, he gets treatment today, he gets treatment tomorrow,
06:43you fly to Seattle, and you could be ready to go on Sunday.
06:45Just some bookkeeping here to let everybody know how this is all going to play out because we've got everything firmed up.
06:51David Lombardi is going to join us at 4.15.
06:53He was out there today.
06:54He's watching all of this.
06:56He was in the room with Kyle.
06:57We'll talk to David Lombardi at 4.15.
06:59Robert Turbin, former Seahawks running back and a Bay Area guy, East Bay guy.
07:05He is going to join us between 5 and 5.15.
07:08The guys have found a different version of Christian at the locker today.
07:13They're cleaning that up and working that up so you can hear it,
07:17and we'll have that for you in just a handful of minutes.
07:21So stay right where you are.
07:22We'll let you hear directly from Christian McCaffrey.
07:26Just kind of then peeling back and looking at this whole thing,
07:31processing what happened about 23 and a half hours ago when we all first heard this.
07:38Obviously, this is exactly, it is the number one news that we did not want to hear.
07:46But what I sort of, and this is understandable,
07:50but what I sort of don't really dig about the way we're all doing it
07:53is that if we were all the way over here, and not everybody was.
08:00I was.
08:01Trent Williams was.
08:03A lot of the reporters have been.
08:05Like, all we can do is tell you what we see,
08:08and Christian has been looking phenomenal.
08:12That's not really about the future, but now this happens,
08:16and I'm already, like, there are a lot of people who are already like,
08:20yeah, when can we get out of this contract?
08:22He'll never be the same again, and you know what?
08:25You might be right, but I think the 49ers and all of us,
08:31I don't know, man, I think you've got to just got to,
08:33we're going to have to do this week to week,
08:34and we're going to have to have the stomach for it.
08:36He's probably, I don't think any of us forecasted 17 games for him this year.
08:41No.
08:42And that's probably not going to happen.
08:44Well, you did throw out yesterday, it would be 17.6 touches a game,
08:49over 17 to get to 300.
08:51And I preface that by saying this seems very unlikely,
08:55but if that were to happen, 17.6 touches per game.
08:59Yeah, I don't think he's going to play 17.
09:02I don't really ever think anybody's going to play 17 in football.
09:06Like, you think Kittle's got 17 in him?
09:08You think Trent Williams got 17?
09:10Hopefully.
09:10You think Brock Purdy, I would say, has the best chance.
09:15Quarterbacks can sometimes and often do it.
09:18But even Brock, Brock didn't do it last year.
09:21No, he played 15.
09:23Yeah.
09:23And he would have played 16 if game number 17 would have mattered.
09:27He missed one game due to injury.
09:29Well, no, he was injured in the Lions game,
09:31so he didn't play the last week.
09:33Would he have if it mattered?
09:34I don't know, but he got hurt.
09:36He got hurt in the Lions game.
09:37So, anyway, point being, though, quarterbacks have the best shot, right,
09:41because they take a limited number of hits each game.
09:44But, yeah, I wouldn't forecast 17 games for anyone
09:47and certainly not any running back.
09:50That's why all of us have been freaking out to get as many as possible
09:53in our fantasy leagues because those dudes go down.
09:57They take so many hits.
09:59But, anyway, like, I've at least arrived at a spot.
10:03I don't know where we were at 5 o'clock last night.
10:05I don't know how you all woke up.
10:07Like, in this moment, I don't feel like this is Christian is out for the year.
10:13I don't feel that way.
10:14I don't either.
10:15And I didn't feel that way yesterday when the news broke.
10:17And I thought that the news cast a certain pall over our Red and Gold Summit
10:22that was a little premature because we don't yet know the severity of what happened.
10:29We heard out with a calf, and it was, okay, it's a calf,
10:32which must mean the Achilles, which must mean that it's about to rupture,
10:36which must mean that he's going to be gone for the year and all the rest of it.
10:39And where's Garendo?
10:40And I actually was looking yesterday at our fantasy league,
10:44and Isaac Garendo was available.
10:46And today is when the waiver claim began, and he's already been claimed on waivers
10:52by somebody in our league thinking that McCaffrey's going to be out,
10:56and so now Garendo's going to move up and be RB2,
10:59which if McCaffrey's not out, Garendo's still RB3,
11:03but you claim him just in case because you feel like the news is so bad that,
11:08you know, Garendo, we've got to get Garendo.
11:11And I actually thought about it, but, you know,
11:13I've got a running back that I've got my eye on anyway,
11:15so I didn't want to claim Garendo.
11:16Oh, is it that sincere guy?
11:19I like sincere.
11:19You do?
11:20I love sincere.
11:22You're a pretty sincere guy.
11:22You're going to need a handful of injuries to get to sincere,
11:25but I'm more of a Quinshawn Judkins guy,
11:28if he can ever get clear of his hurdles.
11:30He's got to actually be on a team first.
11:32And avoid suspension by the league.
11:34Exactly.
11:35It's going to be a tough little ride there.
11:37But anyway, here's McCaffrey in his locker, the thing in full.
11:40So this is from NBC Sports Bay Area.
11:43Take a listen.
11:44This is Christian talking to the media today.
11:47I feel great about my physical condition.
11:49What happened yesterday?
11:52Nothing serious, I can tell you that.
11:54Like I said, I feel great about where I'm at.
11:56Just unfortunately, when you have an injury history that I have,
12:01you know, sometimes when you don't practice,
12:02these things get blown out of proportion.
12:06But like I said, I feel great.
12:07Is it not?
12:08Does it feel different than it felt last summer?
12:11Yeah.
12:12I mean, I've forgotten about last year.
12:13I forgot about the year before that, the year before that.
12:15You know, I'm focused on this week in playing Seattle on Sunday.
12:18Christian, just kind of thing in practice where you felt something
12:21and you just want to be real cautious with it?
12:22Is that kind of what happened?
12:24Yeah.
12:24I'm not supposed to go into anything that happened.
12:26But as I said, you know, I felt like it was a smart thing to do
12:29to not finish the practice because I've been there before
12:32and I've been my own worst enemy in situations like that.
12:35And I was proud of myself for not doing that again.
12:37And, you know, like I said, I went through a whole training camp,
12:40feel great about where I'm at.
12:42The artificial turf is not kind to some players, lower bodies.
12:46Is that going to factor into the decision the next two weeks also?
12:50No, I don't think so.
12:51Yeah, I mean, play on it once every, you know, twice in 14 days.
12:55It should be all right.
12:57Do you plan to play on Sunday?
12:58I always plan to play.
12:59Hell yeah.
13:02Love it.
13:03Great questions.
13:04I always plan to play.
13:05Solid answers.
13:05Yeah.
13:06And I looked it up.
13:06Actually, the surface in Seattle is the exact same surface as New Orleans.
13:11I think most of them are now.
13:13It's like field turf, Revolution 360.
13:15There are a number of different field turfs.
13:17And actually, some stadiums now have kind of a hybrid of grass and turf.
13:23But Seattle and New Orleans, same surface.
13:26So, yeah, it's artificial turf.
13:27But as you were saying earlier, it's a different turf than what we remember
13:31growing up in, you know, Houston and even Seattle, the old kingdom, right?
13:36Now that you've heard it, you want to move your line at all?
13:38Because I want to move my line.
13:40I'm still at 50-50.
13:41You're still at 50-50.
13:42Christian McCaffrey, in his mind, is 75-25.
13:46Oh, no, in his mind, he's 99-1.
13:48Of course.
13:49But I think the Niners are probably more of a 30-70.
13:53I only want to move my line from 90 to 80.
13:56Okay.
13:56So you're 80.
13:57He's not playing.
13:58Yep.
13:59All right.
14:00Yep.
14:00And there's no more doubtful in injury designation.
14:04That's correct.
14:05There's out, questionable, probable, and those are the only three.
14:08I think so.
14:09Yeah.
14:09Because doubtful, 100% of the time, if you were doubtful, you didn't play.
14:13I think I remember one time in the history of watching football where a doubtful guy
14:17played.
14:18But yeah, doubtful pretty much means out.
14:21So, I don't know.
14:25Hearing him gives you a different feel.
14:29I do want to remind everybody, though, if I had a nickel for every time a player was like,
14:33I'm playing.
14:34I'm playing.
14:36I'm a football player.
14:37I'm a warrior.
14:38We're going to get out.
14:39Let's go.
14:41Sit down.
14:42Here's your polo shirt.
14:43Watch the game.
14:45Like that.
14:45Especially week one.
14:46That happens a lot.
14:47Yep.
14:48It happens a lot.
14:49So, temper any enthusiasm off of what Christian's saying.
14:54But I will say it this way.
14:55Again, the most important part for me is that he talked.
14:59And secondly, knowing what they all know based on what just took place, if Christian has got
15:07some sort of a significant problem or something that's of concern, he would be stupid to come
15:14out and sound that way.
15:16He would be stupid to say what he just said.
15:18The only thing he hesitated to answer was basically like there was that one point where he's like,
15:25I'm not, I'm not, like they asked him what happened yesterday.
15:30I'm not supposed to talk about it.
15:32Like they don't want anybody telling anybody what happened.
15:37Okay.
15:38That's fine.
15:39So, that sort of sticks in my head a little bit.
15:43But beyond that, you wouldn't take from anything else he said that there's any problem at all.
15:48Right.
15:49You wouldn't.
15:50But, and this again, and I will never question the reporters who are in real time trying to
15:55like respond and ask.
15:57And you heard Matt Barrows.
15:59You heard Mayoko.
16:00You heard all the great beat reporters we have.
16:03And David Lombardi coming up later in the show.
16:05I want to ask David if this is the same leg in which he sustained the PCL injury.
16:11Because if it's an upper calf situation, could this be related to the PCL tear, which is
16:18posterior cruciate ligament, if it's the same leg as that, then yeah, this might not be the
16:23same bilateral tendonitis of the lower calf.
16:27This might be upper calf.
16:28If it's the same leg as the knee, are they related?
16:31I wonder if anybody even knows that.
16:34I mean, unless somebody said something to reporters that we haven't heard yet, like, I don't even
16:40know if anybody knows which leg it is.
16:43Right.
16:43Which leg is it?
16:43Well, Christian's, like, his answer might have been neither.
16:46I'm fine.
16:48Right.
16:48Well, I mean, that question to Kyle was, you know, what was it, you know, and stuff.
16:55Not going to talk about it.
16:56He's not going to talk about it, but, you know, can you just, can you tell us which
17:00leg it is?
17:01And he may not.
17:02I don't think anybody asked.
17:03I'm not going to talk about injuries.
17:04Sure.
17:05What are you asking exactly?
17:06I'm asking which leg it was, Kyle.
17:08I'm so confused by your question.
17:10Kyle, he has two legs.
17:12It's the left leg or the right leg.
17:14Got to be delicate with those calves.
17:16I get that, which is why I'm curious.
17:18Is it the same leg as where he sustained a PCL injury?
17:23I'm not a doctor, so.
17:25Okay.
17:25And, Grandy, that's a five out of five for you on the call and response right there.
17:29That was elite.
17:31So...
17:31All you were missing was a, which is always, thank you, it's always my favorite.
17:38I'm not going to talk about injuries.
17:39I get that.
17:41And that's normal, by the way.
17:42That's normal.
17:44Right.
17:44I mean, when did they ever be like, okay, so here's what Juwan, so Juwan feels something.
17:49It's about 73% of the way up his leg.
17:53And he says it kind of feels like somebody's biting him, biting him right in the back of the
17:57leg when he walks.
17:58And when he gets up from a chair, it really hurts, and the mourning is the hardest part.
18:03But then it loosens up.
18:04I mean, we don't do this.
18:06We don't do this in the NFL.
18:08We don't do this in any sport.
18:11The line of questioning reflects the importance of this player.
18:17He is one of the, what?
18:21I mean, he might be the most important non-quarterback in the league.
18:25He's one of them.
18:26Yep.
18:26I mean...
18:27He's definitely one of the top 10 most important non-quarterbacks in the league.
18:31Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, yeah.
18:34He might be one of the 10 most important players in the league, period.
18:38Some would argue.
18:39Yeah, perhaps.
18:40I mean, some would argue that he's the most important niner.
18:44I still believe.
18:45And by the way, what's...
18:46Oh, you know what we haven't looked at yet?
18:49The spread?
18:49What did the spread do?
18:51That'll tell you what's going to happen on Sunday.
18:53True, but I don't think that we are at the point yet where there would be movement.
18:58But they know.
18:59Yeah.
18:59They always know.
19:00During the break, I'm going to text Dr. Pandya, and he probably already is going to respond
19:05to me before I actually get there, can a PCL injury and a recovery lead to this sort
19:13of a calf strain as a byproduct of getting better and trying to work your way through
19:19that injury?
19:20Because that, to me, Mark, is where my head is now going.
19:23If it's a different injury than last year, which was Achilles tendonitis, maybe this is
19:28in the leg where he hurt the knee, and it's just part of him working through, getting the
19:34calf back to where it should be with the bum knee.
19:36It was two and a half last night.
19:38Grandy now says it's one and a half.
19:40I've got it at a spot where it's only two.
19:42It was two and a half.
19:43Now it's two.
19:44Grandy is seeing one and a half.
19:46So there is...
19:46Niners still favored.
19:47Right.
19:47Okay.
19:48So there's a little...
19:49There's a little blip in the matrix.
