04:09gown out of it.
04:10Or you could be going to Paris, creating some crazy couture gown or something like that.

04:48we're driving who knows where we're going all of a sudden we're going over the brooklyn bridge so
04:52definitely borough and that was really fabulous oh look how pretty it looks over there i think
04:58we have a boat in our future you think so yeah we're designing cement galoshes
05:12we end up at this pier on the east river overlooking manhattan we walk over to this garage
05:19and there's a woman standing there and we don't know who she is designers i want to introduce
05:26caroline calvin singer vice president of design for levi's good morning designers good morning
05:33behind this door you'll find the raw materials for your challenge
05:40the garage door is racing pretty slowly and i don't even know if i want to know what's on the other
05:45side of that door
05:57the doors open and there are hundreds and hundreds of levi's jeans just hanging on clothes lines inside
06:05this warehouse you'll find more than 500 pairs of 501s in a variety of styles and colors as well as one
06:12yard bolts of white cotton these are the raw materials for this challenge so designers your
06:17challenge today is to create an iconic denim look of your choice that captures the spirit of originality
06:25and creativity that has lived in the heart of the levi's brand i haven't worked with denim in a long
06:30time so i'm really excited there are laundry bags inside for each of you when i say go you'll have three
06:37minutes to fit as much as you can into the laundry bags the jeans were hung so far into the distance
06:43we're like oh do we really have to run that whole way all right you're ready yes yeah go
06:57we have to get our bags
06:58i lost the shoe i'm running super fast and my shoe falls off it's so dirty in that place see my foot
07:10my strategy for the three minutes is to get all the dark pairs that i want because i'm thinking to
07:16go for a dark look i grabbed jackets and jeans i ended up picking the lightest color that they have
07:23so crazy we all just started pulling down the jeans and the clothes pins were flying everywhere
07:34honestly i went for a jacket and i went for dark denim but then i just grabbed everything
07:41all right one minute those are mine um i think they might be mine but yeah i think they might be mine
07:49i will not lie i'm a pretty competitive person when you're grabbing everything you can you don't
07:57have time to stop and look
08:01oh they're dirty look at the floor
08:06five seconds it's not fitting all right time i need to get my shoe i knew your shoe was gonna come off
08:19all right everybody there are a ton of notions from levi's okay wow you have until midnight tonight
08:37go go thank you thank you oh these are kind of cute i think denim's fun to work with i make my hats
08:50sometimes out of denim i thought to myself it needs to be something that no one else here can do i knew
08:56that no one could fit denim like i can fit it so i chose the corset which again is an iconic piece
09:03and i'm making a coat and it's kind of futuristic looking it has to be dramatic and interesting and
09:09forward i use mostly the 501 jeans and i'm using the labels as an epaulette on the one shoulder
09:17it looks like julian got the most stuff more than rami got the most stuff he just grabbed whatever he
09:23wanted greedy bitch greedy bitch i was the one behind all of you guys i know right
09:28i am not specifically an american designer i was born in the city of jerusalem living in a
09:38politically complicated environment where three major religions sort of mix and and have conflict
09:45and because of lack of activities came the love for sketching and design and it was the perfect escape
09:50at the age of five or six or seven because i'm not from the united states my take is a little bit
09:57different it's a little bit more fashion forward more edgy the skirt and the shirt that i'm making
10:02is going to show that levi's can be a little bit more refined yet hip
10:10minor filthy you like rolled around on the floor i think i know i just bang out the dirt
10:17my jeans are totally dirty that i got today because like an idiot i dropped them all on the ground
10:21you're super smart oh really is there a good way to get dirt out of this stuff i would wait until
10:28you're done and then i would like damp cloth it i wouldn't i would wipe it with a dry piece of
10:33denim but then if you wipe it with a little bit of a damp cloth a lot of it will pick up no lady wipe it
10:38dry or it'll seep into the denim you don't have to get it out i don't know how many times you've been
10:42paid as a stylist obviously i know more than you since you're gonna wet denim it's so cute to see you
10:50i think that christian's very talented and there's nothing wrong with having a high level of
10:56confidence but i think that christian is very immature deconstruct that up make it your own
11:04deconstruct great somebody needs to give him a bottle and send him to bed
11:12like what am i supposed to do with this
11:14i feel like i'm in first grade please deconstruct wow i did that when i was in fashion school christian
11:25is like a cartoon character there's so much yakking and bitching if i had hair on my head i'd want
11:30to tear it out oh my god i'm gonna die of barfness so disgusting thank god this is not how fashion is
11:44it's interesting but i just couldn't do it every day my idea was to do a coat a very classic trench
11:57one of the reasons why i think i'm so into fashion is because my mother has always been
12:02a source of inspiration for me when i was growing up she always made everything i wanted i would sketch
12:09things and she would sew them up beautifully so i'd like to think that she'd be happy and proud if i
12:15make it to the finals julian's doing a jacket soon i know i heard her when she was saying it but i wasn't
12:21going to change my concept yeah very true
12:30i didn't even realize it until like halfway through i looked over and i saw that she was also making a denim
12:34coat so i was like wow that's kind of crazy we just worked on the previous challenge together and i
12:41made that coat and i didn't even know she had any interesting coats it's just really annoying actually
12:50coming up on project runway yeah bleeding everywhere i feel like a mess
13:04i feel so manly working with denim it's like amazing day parade up in here we were given this
13:14like levi look book and inside this book was this stem trucker jacket and immediately when i heard the
13:23name just like trucker jacket i instantly clicked with this edgy biker outfit for a woman
13:30that's good denim's cool because it's easy to sew it's easy to cut so i am making a wedding dress the
13:37wedding dress i wore was i don't want to say casual but it's not like a big satin dress that looks like
13:43you're on a wedding cake sage and i got married about a year ago for the last two years sage has been
13:49supporting me financially i think my husband will be really proud when he sees the dress oh my god i love
14:01it's so quiet with everyone gone it's kind of weird everybody's gone like there's not that many of us
14:07left i don't like it it's hard when some of your favorite people are just leaving i know and some
14:13annoying people are still left blah the fact that ricky's here i think is a joke because i think he should
14:23have gone home instead of kit his work has been the same boring thing since day one i think he has no
14:30vision at all because i've been on the bottom so much i've been getting these looks like i am so
14:38not worthy of being here i'm not the kind of person that says oh i'm fierce and me me me but i think
14:44the designers don't know that i have the experience i have i was an assistant designer for the valentino
14:49lingerie i worked with oscar de la renta i was a vp of design for the vera wang lingerie
14:56i know for a fact that i'm a great designer so i'm okay with that
14:59like a crackhead let's see how else could i do this i guess i could just pin this up there why does
15:20he talk to himself like that it's so weird i want to like let the jeans speak to me the most
15:28iconic fashion piece is the little black dress so i'm making a little blue dress out of denim i like
15:35that when i work on something i talk to it you're so cute that's just the way that i work you talking

22:16she's running in the fields the first thing that i do when i enter the work room in the morning is a run

23:05quick and then go back to the sewing room because there's much to be done oh can you try this on
23:16because i think i made it too short it's just gonna be this oh my god what did victoria make it's like
23:21she didn't do anything i think a couple of people in the room could have made what she made in
23:25probably like two hours it just was like a jacket with some stuff added on don't ever expect me to be
23:32finished when you get here but guess what girl i've taken you with me to the top every time
23:38we have some time so okay i just need to take it easy and make it beautiful when she finally had
23:43the look on she looked amazing i just think wow that's exactly what i wanted to look like
23:49it's gorgeous they'll hate it but whatever them i'm over them i don't know if what i'm doing is
23:56what the judges want but i keep telling myself that what i'm doing is what i want
24:01it was gonna be a wedding dress it just looked too hippie in it tim was like looks like hippie
24:07we put on the dress and she just looks great so i feel really confident i'm still not sure i'll be
24:13in the top but i'm positive i'll be safe damn christian you're good let's see booty oh so hot i'm like so
24:23nervous right now for some reason because i just want to get this right right now again i find myself
24:28very impressed for time i just want to make it to the finals despite all of this i still want to
24:33make it to the final crazy victorians look so similar to mine this time
24:40it's delicious okay okay let's go to hair and make up

24:52so hot oh my god i love it i think i deserve to win on this challenge because i actually made a jacket
25:12and a pair of jeans which is such an iconic look but i made it in a completely new way the bottom of the
25:18pants was actually out of the sleeve of a jacket you know if i have to see another tube dress i'm
25:25gonna kill myself like i can't even stand it i'm gonna die what is it come closer to me i am concerned
25:32and i'm freaking out my only option is to glue the buttons onto my skirt because time is just going
25:37by really quick and i have to figure out a way to really get it all done oh boy i'm nervous
25:51all right designers models it's time for the runway let me get one more glue stick
25:57so come with me all right okay hold on one second come come come definitely i was working
26:07until the very last second and i wasn't very proud of my workmanship i just should have simplified my
26:13design jillian coming coming up on project runway you know it's not very flattering on her
26:27you were not inspired by this at all
26:37welcome to the runway as you know in fashion one day you're in and the next day you're out
26:44for this challenge we asked you to create an iconic denim look using levi's 501 jeans as your raw materials
26:52the competition is getting tougher so immunity will not be given to the winner of this challenge

27:06first we have top american designer michael kors hey guys hi next we have nina garcia fashion director
27:13of el magazine hello everyone and senior vice president of design for levi's caroline calvin
27:22we will score your designs as they come down the runway one of you will be named the winner
27:26i'm really happy with my look i think it's just detailed enough it's well put together it's really
27:47pretty i think it's really neat i love it when i see my garment i enjoy it she looked like one of
28:00my sketches she looked like the girl in my head it felt so good it felt amazing to see her like that
28:05i love my final look it looked really clean and polished it didn't look hippie or woodstock
28:18at all
28:31jacqueline always does such a great job walking down the runway i was working until the very last minute
28:36but i was relatively happy with the way that she looked my finished garment looks so nice in my
28:51opinion i love it i really think it makes jeans look dressier and more modern
28:57my outfit's pretty fierce i think it's pretty amazing what i did with the two different types
29:08of garments that i made so i love it it was very innovative and it worked out really really cool and
29:12really hot
29:20i'm kind of happy with the look i think that i could have done a whole lot more with it but
29:25i almost kind of liked it actually i thought that there was potential in that coat
29:38we've scored your designs and we would like to talk to all of you let's bring out your models
29:55look i wanted to create this kind of trucker motorcycle kind of look for the jacket i actually
30:08used all 501 jeans two different washes for the jean i actually used the trucker jacket as the
30:18lengthening of the bottom of the jean the fact that you've taken the jacket and made it into the
30:23part of the jean that you took all the different elements of the 501 that's very innovative i like
30:28it thank you i love the fact that you were inventive it's the motocross jean you know maybe
30:35that is the iconic element that's what i was going for i think they fit her really well they're not
30:41stretched not at all they're hard to get on her let me tell you i think you did a brilliant job tailoring
30:47great thank you chris tell us about your look my idea behind my look was to take the little black
30:56dress and make a little blue dress the little black dress is an iconic item what is an iconic item it has
31:04to look timeless and this item to me looks dated i think you have a start of a really great dress but
31:12it does look like two ideas and that it's not quite yet finished when i saw it coming down the runway
31:18i noticed the threads straight away i kind of left it that way on purpose but to me it's kind of like
31:24why didn't he play with fraying all over the dress it looks a little home sewn
31:31rami tell us about your denim look it's made out of pieces from three different pants and parts of jacket
31:38and i used the zipper trim to sort of go all around the scenes to outline sort of certain areas in
31:43terms of originality and creativity i think it's quite fun thanks i think you had something there
31:49with these with these zippers and i think there's something to be said for an idea that could be
31:54interpreted into separates or sportswear i'm so happy to see you work with another material yeah i like the
32:01fact that it's very sharp and it's very clean and it's very well done very sophisticated as usual coming
32:07for me thanks ricky tell us about your look i wanted to make a little cocktail dress denim done
32:15up you know and it says something about me it's a little bitch in me it fits her like a glove that
32:22was i also love the whole outfit i love the hair i thought it was very sweet i think it's a 501 made
32:28into a fantastic dress i can see your craftsmanship it's just really cool i love amy winehouse and
32:38obviously you must love amy winehouse too since she's modeling today i think this is the first thing that
32:47i've seen from you where instead of me hearing that you work on lingerie and then i don't see the results
32:55today i see the results thank you it looks impeccable and that's what we've been expecting
33:02from your work and you've delivered it thank you

33:13this is like a roller coaster you don't you don't know where to go you don't know
33:17if you suck if you don't suck and
33:18it doesn't go away i know that's why you just it just doesn't go away i know i know
33:28okay jillian tell us about your denim look i just took a lot of different pairs of jeans and attached
33:34them to construct the shape and molded the top and went for a free-flowing bottom i wanted to take
33:40that and bring it into the future i was a little surprised julian especially coming off the last
33:46challenge where you did this impeccable jacket today i'm not so much in love i think that might
33:53be a case that i was ambitious to make a coat in a small period of time the red tabs there's a little
33:58bit too many on one side it's a little bit distracting it's overly complicated you have some good ideas
34:05it's just that there's too many of them i don't know she looks bigger too you know it's not very
34:12flattering on her i want to see the model look fabulous and she looks fabulous but not in that
34:22sweet can you tell us about your look i wanted to play with patchwork
34:27and it originally started as a long dress and it looked 270s so i cut it off and it instantly took
34:34away the hippy dippiness of it i think it's super chic really really chic i think the mix of the
34:41denims is great and also it's got the voodoo in it i call it it's got magic slimming voodoo slimming voodoo
34:48exactly i think any of us girls here except for michael would wear it with the right shoe yes
34:57and and i think we could wear it on many different occasions which is very important
35:02the one thing that i was thinking is i am missing a bit of the the levi's 501 in there but in terms of
35:07the the tailoring and the fitting it's spectacular thanks victoria tell us about your look i actually
35:16took a jean jacket that i had that was there you know and i started to drape like conventional trench
35:23details like a storm flat so in my eyes it doesn't seem like then you didn't have that much to do
35:29you would think that there wasn't a lot of work involved but for some reason i was still
35:33kind of in the sewing room working away well i think the intention to think about a trim little
35:39trench coat perhaps was a good idea but i don't think it made one garment the top of it literally
35:46looks like just a reconnoitered jean jacket and then i feel like the two things don't go together
35:52it looks like a party skirt got glued onto your jean jacket it's almost like you were not inspired by
35:59this at all
36:03we've heard what you had to say i'm gonna need some time to talk
36:06i think we've moved the wrong way thank you
36:19whose did we like um i think that ricky's dress was very clever using the button fly up the front of
36:25the dress he really was very meticulous about his work the seaming was beautiful there was a confidence
36:32about his his design we keep saying to him where's this lingerie experience the minute she turned
36:38the corner i said up there it is he's showing you the lingerie experience finally the ricky that
36:43we've all been waiting for
36:49how did you all like christian's outfit he put a lot of details that represented the 501
36:54and he thought about it could be an iconic item and then also really
36:59bit with the concept that he was coming up with he's the only one who sent out
37:03a new jean i think a lot of people would be into that jean
37:10sweet pea sweet pea it was all about turning denim into a very elegant chic chic and iconic
37:17kind of dress you could dress it up you could dress it down i loved it
37:22rami wasn't too bad either i loved the zipper outlining interestingly you brought up oh my god
37:33it's not jersey denim's the opposite of jersey nice to see something different total
37:44so who are our least favorites today why don't we start with jillian she should have kept it simple
37:50she had some good ideas but she had some bad ideas too i mean to have that much jean fabric around
37:56your body it it i mean you just look like a marshmallow
38:03chris to me was very boring it had rough edges but not rough enough so there was just something that
38:09was quite not finished and it was like one approach or it's kind of like which which lane is he going
38:14down it looked dated to me you know very working girl joan kuzak and working girl
38:21victoria everybody's had fun with the project and i don't think she did and it showed my biggest issue
