04:26can't figure it out tim will meet you in the work room to fill you in on all the details

05:20as heidi said for this challenge you'll be designing for a fashion icon i know you're all in suspense

05:53sarah jessica parker we were flipping like you just wouldn't imagine
06:09crying the reason i moved to new york was because of watching episodes of sex in the city and there
06:15standing in front of me with sarah jessica parker and i just lost it in case anyone doesn't know
06:24i am thrilled and honored to introduce sarah jessica parker
06:29bravo bravo sarah jessica is going to tell you about your challenge
06:34well ladies and gentlemen i'm especially excited to tell you that this week's challenge
06:40is to create a two-piece look for my new clothing line bitten
06:47you'll do it absolutely okay good
06:50the look that you're designing is for our fall winter collection the idea behind the line is about
06:56creating high-end american sportswear at affordable prices so giving every woman what she needs we
07:04believe that fashion shouldn't be a luxury and quality shouldn't be a privilege as sarah jessica
07:10mentioned this two-piece outfit is about affordability and she means it the entire look
07:17must retail for less than forty dollars retail retail as you know in fashion there's a big difference
07:26between the cost of raw materials and the retail price accordingly your budget is fifteen dollars
07:36fifteen dollars i think we're going to be using toilet paper and scotch tape
07:42you will have thirty minutes to develop design concepts on paper then you will be pitching your
07:47ideas to sarah jessica who in turn will choose seven of you to move forward with your designs
07:53those seven will pick from the remaining group of designers to form teams of two that's where i got
08:00nervous i love to work in teams but i definitely want to be on a good team sarah jessica has thoughtfully
08:08brought dossiers for each of you and to help inform your design decision making so your 30 minutes

08:26i did use the dossier i think when you're designing mass market you have to appeal to everyone
08:31i definitely knew i wanted to do a dress and a really creative jacket because i didn't want to
08:42copy any of the shapes that they already have done
08:47the first challenge i feel like i sucked i still feel like i'm trying to prove myself
08:53i wanted sarah jessica parker to like my outfit so it was like all right i know i can do this
08:59you have five minutes
09:08all right designers time is up the first person to pitch to sarah jessica parker is jack
09:20come with me nice to meet you i'm jack likewise
09:23i went with you know a basic top and then i did some maybe contrast top stitching
09:29it gives it a little something it's really nice to see you did a great job oh my god my pleasure
09:34it has a knit dress with a cowl and a turtleneck yes yes um nervous about pitching to sarah jessica
09:46absolutely um it's so incredible to me i cannot tell you thank you so much um i make things that are
09:57polymorphic so i want to make a very simple cape oh wow then it becomes a little bit like a hood it
10:04actually goes crisscross around this way and ties in a little ball then it can also be tied with a simple
10:09little cascade very clever so i noticed when i looked through the line there were no skirts really
10:15right it's not heavy on the skirts so i added a skirt great the back yeah we'll have like a little
10:21plaque in the back and follow the button story back there so it's really a button story this is
10:25about i don't mean that in a bad way i mean well done thank you so much i appreciate your time you too
10:31thank you i want to do a knit dress the jacket is paneled and here in this area is going to be
10:39pleading i'm taking it a little bit more forward that's great can i have a hug i have a top that has
10:46pockets like this and a ribbing at the bottom it could be just with leggings that come to the waist
10:52underneath great a long dress with a wide belt that is flattering on everyone or just no no no
11:00it's not going to show the bumps and bruises and all that no okay okay great this design is really
11:05just keeping a balance of femininity and strength wowza it looks like a complicated jacket to build
11:12but i'm i'm thrilled that you feel you can do it that's great i love the idea of doing kind of a
11:17shirt dress and what is this little vest so i drew it like this this would be my second piece i love the
11:22vest yeah no i do too sort of a pullover cape silhouette women who are bigger wouldn't feel like this is
11:30too much of a tent like a fitted cake not so yeah batman okay great the skirt would actually just be
11:36a very plain black knit so really classic right very simple very classic fantastic it was the idea
11:44of the shirt dress here we're pairing it up with tights a woman who's a size two can wear this yeah
11:49and she can get married and get pregnant take off the belt and still wear this okay a wonderful tunic
11:55with a juliette sleeve okay the bottoms i'm thinking raw denim great thank you so much for
12:00your time carmen weber okay carmen like the opera weber like the baller take care sarah jessica has
12:12selected her seven designers yes um i was incredibly impressed with all of your work and i think you have
12:19very exciting features all of you i hope i'm part of them having said that the first person
12:27is elisa it's quite ambitious so i'm very excited to see what you can do okay thank you you're very
12:35welcome thank you the second person that i picked is kit i just think it has a very youthful approach
12:45i really felt like you were thinking about the line and the third name that i picked
12:52victoria um i suspect you have the skills to take something very simple and actually make it
12:58really nice and startling thank you
13:03marion i think it's really i think a very sophisticated approach thank you very much it's
13:11impossible to to do this i hate it okay and the next name is ricky i think it can be really sexy
13:21what you did and a little more grown up christian there you are the sketch is very impressive it looks
13:31complicated i don't know how you guys do what you do but it's very sexy thank you thank you and lastly
13:41i think you were very thoughtful about how many different types and shapes of women can wear it
13:50and it still has nice details thank you thank you before you each choose a teammate sarah jessica has an
14:00important announcement the winning design may be sold as part of bitten's fall winter collection in
14:07stephen barry stores nationwide so wow that was amazing oh my god if i picked it's gonna be so fierce
14:17i want you to deliver the line you've been looking forward to oh so i'll see you on the runway
14:22this is so elaborate i have a mountain of work to do what do you mean you spit on it yes what is going on

15:46when i knew that i was elisa's partner i was kind of freaked out a little bit honestly she would
15:55prefer to sew everything by hand and i didn't want an unfinished garment going down that runway elisa
16:03i wanted sweet pea from the very beginning
16:09all right designers you have your teams remember that your budget is 15
16:12dollars you have until midnight tonight for this challenge we're going to go shopping so let's go
16:24generally 15 especially at mood won't buy you anything
16:29how much are these by the way like 50 cents it looks like it looks super cheap how much of this
16:34you really need once we got to move fabrics i told him straight up we're using fleece and jersey
16:40it's leggings it's a sweatshirt top this will be the fringe and then the skirt and then the top
16:46okay so we can get that one is there any cheaper cotton elisa started pulling out colors that had
16:52nothing to do with the bitten line what about do you like the teal i love the teal i handed over color
16:58to her i knew shape and i knew what i wanted it to feel like if i were you yeah i would finish some edges

17:17we all were just so ready to go it was just like a huge adrenaline rush let's get to work
17:25most women feel like they have to save their special clothes for a special occasion that our deadline
17:31for the challenge is midnight doesn't give us very many hours to complete our two pieces
17:38how long do you think we want these to be do you like the shape yeah i love the shape i really wanted
17:43to do a vest and a dress for some reason i thought that kind of fit the bitten girl cool cool it looks
17:48very sophisticated i'm envisioning something loose the most important thing for me is that different
17:55body types can wear it i actually think he's sort of a subtle ruffle here this is a really important
18:01challenge for me because it is sort of my way to prove that i am a great designer i had the opening
18:06like this sort of like from shoulder to shoulder the design was rather intriguing that marion had come
18:12up with and what happens here this is just drake or is that i did have some concerns about it being
18:18overly intricate because we only have until midnight to work tonight so what i need to do is i need to figure out
18:24how to do it in the one cut the way i want to i decided to have these two pieces the cape and the
18:33polymorphic dress and i understood that there would be a complete juxtaposition of our aesthetics now i'm
18:40going to hold this up to you when you put your arm out please my dear and she's a bit taller than us
18:46oh for sure for sure how oh it's already wet i know i just did a spit mark oh that's how i mark it
18:54a spit mark yeah what do you mean you spit on it yeah when elisa told me i spit on the fabric as a
19:01marker i was just like oh my god what is going on why because i want to imbibe it with energy and
19:12essence and that's how i that's how i mark i'm sorry i thought you're totally you're totally fine you're
19:17fine you're fine you're fine basically i'm on planet earth and elisa is on some happy planet
19:24i'm not sure of the name
19:26i think sarah jessica being here for this challenge made it very serious
19:43sarah jessica parker chose this piece so ah that was so cool it was it was really good
19:49this challenge to me is very important because it'll prove that i'm more than just a lingerie
19:54designer so we'll do one so one strip seven eights don't do one itch
19:59okay how is everyone good i'm coming in to check so how are you guys doing we're coming along
20:07wow it's actually going to be a little shorter and what's underneath
20:13so elaborate this is a lot of work because i think this can be wonderfully chic just do it okay
20:21tim did have a concern about time and rightfully so i have a mountain of work to do
20:31christian hi hi talk to me what's going on i think that we're doing an excellent job
20:38i mean the dress was pretty simple i just think you want to be very conscious of making this 2007 and not
20:44have it look too retro i think it's perfect you know i take everyone's opinion to heart but i
20:52don't always agree or have to go with it and it's a really neat design it's definitely hot i think
20:58i'll be fine okay victoria hi tim kevin so talk to me about your look oh this is adorable isn't it
21:07it has a racer back yeah so that's our little surprise a little racer back oh it's really cute
21:13and i have to say the palette is very sophisticated all right thank you i will see you later

21:28casting stitch this is by hand oh by hand jeez louise elisa that's cuckoo now i don't feel so mean
21:37thank you her solution was to ruche this up to make it even it can't happen no i wouldn't wish it
21:44up that much i was being told that my methods were ridiculous you can't sustain this listen to each
21:52other you need each other i just sort of got overwhelmed i'm just going to do whatever they
21:57tell me to do and just make it look great and that's fine because i know who i am you have 35
22:04minutes left bye i have a notcher yeah you go it makes a little thing okay so then you have it all
22:13cut out and you see this little thing like spit mark only better i get it no what we have to
22:19accomplish by midnight is to sew two garments and to finish them properly and make it work

22:43i have to finish this overly ambitious skirt and there's no time i'm still not anywhere near done
23:01it was scary that we had very little time being eliminated from the competition would not
23:06be good for me i i really want to win this i just have to bust my butt and get the skirt finished
23:14coming up on project runway this is it look at this unacceptable i am trying to make this work
23:20let's go i'm not quite sure what else to do i don't think it's going to be pretty
23:24i can understand the intrigue behind elisa but i just don't see how she'll make it past today without
23:39knowing how to use a sewing machine yeah how stressful this challenge with elisa really scares
23:44me because i don't want to go home so i'm gonna work as hard as i have to work to get
23:49a beautiful garment down that runway are you ready to go okay ready you guys we gotta go rock on

24:19christian and i were actually finished look at this like dude everything's perfect and then this
24:26unacceptable that's the problem with handmade yeah but this is her trademark kind of stuff
24:32so i just have to somehow make it work i am trying my hardest to really make this work and
24:39i think that it will now good morning everybody good morning we have a big big day ahead you want to
24:49knock sarah jessica parker's socks off or her stockings off whatever it may be so do that you will have
24:57an hour to send your models to the tresemme hair salon and the l'oreal paris makeup room all right i'm
25:04sending the models all right good morning for sarah jessica parker's new line bin and she's the judge
25:13oh my god i'm too excited i like the cleanest of all this like i think that's really stunning ricky
25:22has the sickest model i was psyched just yeah hold it like that yeah oh my god it transforms it
25:30my intention wasn't for the dress to be pretty pretty because it was already pretty you know
25:34i needed an edge to it so i made it now there's a second piece or just yeah hold it like that
25:40i love it you guys better work
25:45our sweater ended up looking a little bit french or kind of chic so we decided to put the beret on marie
25:54there yeah do you want it to cover your ear does that hurt here come in more i'm kind of shocked
25:58at how well we had actually done our model loved it and that's always good perfect you want to go do
26:05it yeah what do you think about it this is like this is my closet's full of what are you thinking about
26:10the skirt
26:14the fitting of my garment i wasn't really happy about because i was off like an inch and a half or two
26:20inches like in the waistline and the bus well um i'm not quite sure what else to do it's just getting
26:28really kind of ugly but we're running with it and hopefully it'll all work out instead of going down
26:35in a ball of flames not too dark not too heavy and focus on the lashes more than this that's perfect
26:55i love it something like that yep that's perfect because look it shows these two even better yeah
27:04absolutely i am so proud of what sweet pea and my collaboration has created it truly is a marriage
27:14of what i've been seeking out but don't you think that looks great that looks fantastic okay high

28:52for this challenge we ask you to work in teams of two to create a two-piece look for sarah jessica
28:58parker's line bitten sarah jessica may sell the winning look as part of bitten's fall winter collection
29:03in steve and barry's retail stores nationwide so we better be wowed by what you've done okay let's meet
29:11the judges first we have top american designer michael kors hey guys hi next we have nina garcia
29:19fashion director of l magazine hola hi and actress and fashion icon sarah jessica parker hi we will
29:30score your designs as they come down the runway sarah jessica will pick the winner and one of you
29:36will be out let's start the show
29:46kid and i thought the outfit was really adorable we were kind of shocked at how well we had actually done
29:51we're sweating there in our seats but the way katie worked that dress was stunning
30:07i'm happily surprised i think our final look is great
30:12when lauren's walking in my garment i like it i feel good about it
30:33my garment definitely stood out from the other designers i thought it looked really expensive for
30:39the amount of money that we were given granted we did have some problems with the fitting but the
30:47outfit's charming honestly
30:57i really believed in the dress i loved the colors i loved the fabric choice i was really happy
31:09i thought it looked expensive very chic i think the other designers knew that it was really strong
31:19i'm not nervous on this one it is a little on the risque side but i can't imagine
31:23that the outcome is going to be horrible
31:32the dress looked amazing of course i always feel like i wish i had more time but i was proud of myself
31:36i was proud that the look came together we've scored your designs will the following teams please step

32:42i would like to start with victoria and kevin
32:48sarah jessica um victoria i liked very much the sketch because there was a simplicity about it
32:54that's very very appealing but my concern was how do you make it interesting and i think you did
32:59a really good job of that thank you thank you it's charming and i think this is something that
33:05a lot of people can wear can i just see the back of it it wasn't intended to be raised your back but
33:11we had it on the form we were talking we were we love the back would that fit into your fall winter
33:18collection yeah very nicely i think you just really listened to what we were hoping to see thank you
33:26we continue with marion and steve nina um can we see it without the bell sure
33:35i think it's a nice idea but i think the proportions are really awkward what is the fabric this is a knit i
33:42think what actually happened was um this fabric sort of stretches as you work with it it looks a bit
33:48costumey a little pocahontas like all she needs is like a headband and a feather sarah i thought that
33:54the sketch was very sophisticated and it feels like it maybe stops a little short of what the
34:00intentions of the sketch were i think the arm holes are a little bit too drapey on the side you
34:05can see a bra which is always a little bit well yeah i can't figure out really how would you wear it
34:10i have to say i don't get it at all it looks like out of the basement it looks dirty it looks like a
34:16rag to me and the proportion really is tough it's a tough one okay let's move on to elisa and sweet
34:24p sarah jessica well i think you did a great job i really like how the dress looked when she walked
34:30i thought it was sexy and yet appropriate it also seems like you get a lot for the money yeah it's
34:37polymorphic which means that it can be worn infinite numbers of ways just curious how the partnership
34:42broke down and how you all work together i was super nervous i didn't really understand her language
34:48i don't even know what polymorphic means she does not use the type of tools the rest of us are used to
34:53using sometimes i spit market which seems to be really disturbing to my fellow you should not tell
34:59people that i mean you know people might not like that that their dress has been spit on when they buy it
35:05what planet are you from the planet where i am is one that has been trained to respond purely to
35:11materials and doesn't necessarily know the language but knows how to make it work on the body and so
35:16i'm coming to your planet but with gifts the plain simple truth is it's great looking a zillion girls
35:23would want to wear that dress it drapes beautifully the sleeves are kind of stunning thank you thank you
35:29very much christian and carmen first off it's a very ambitious jacket it's a lot of look i know but
35:37i mean can you really picture that jacket being easy to fit a lot of different shapes 100 this is
35:44very very fashion 80s it's like full like 80s kind of mood glare addicted to love moment yes i just think
35:53the way that you guys styled it looks very retro i actually want to hear what sarah jessica has to say
35:59because i think it's so much like my sketch i'm very i don't i really do it has a stronger color and
36:06it's a little bit shorter i think it's it's more severe in person than it was on paper do you think
36:13it would fit into your fall winter line i think if the dress had more length and it wasn't as snug
36:21carmen and christian if one of you would have to go who would it be carmen you're asking me to make
36:28a choice oh it's fine totally i would go home she said what what do i need to do gave it what to do so
36:37so does that mean that you think that chris should go yeah

36:47marion you also had one of the lowest scores if one of you would have to go who would it be it was my
36:54vision it was my design concept so i would have to say it would be me steve as for saying that it's
37:01entirely his fault i can't really say so are you saying that both of you should go i don't like the
37:07idea of that no we've heard what you have to say we're going to have a little chat then i'm going to

37:28think about elisa and sweet pea i have to say the cape is very cute you could be 50 you could be 15

38:40disco 80s the next thing you know you're like big button earrings and you're on facts of life i mean
38:45yeah it's just you can't go that literal the sketch it was bold it was powerful but it wasn't retro
38:53but obviously in his brain he doesn't have the same reference points he had every intention to do exactly
