04:00Now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
04:03Is He Doing Greater Works?
04:04Or are we?
04:05I want to talk to you today
04:08about the power that is available to us
04:10through the Lord Jesus Christ.
04:12In fact, I want to ask you a question.
04:14And here is my question.
04:16Is Jesus doing greater works now,
04:19or are we?
04:22You may say,
04:23that's a pretty dumb question.
04:24Anybody can answer that.
04:25I mean, Jesus is always going to do better things
04:27than we do.
04:28But before you answer the question,
04:30listen to my sermon,
04:32because you might be in for a surprise.
04:35And I want to just take you
04:37on a little journey of the power of Jesus,
04:39His great works that He does.
04:41And I want to tell you,
04:42this is just a small sampling of everything.
04:45For in the Bible, in the New Testament,
04:47we have a great number of miracles
04:50that are reported in all four Gospels,
04:52some individually in this Gospel,
04:54some in that.
04:55The power of Jesus
04:57and His performing acts
05:00are everywhere to be seen in the Bible.
05:02I'm only going to talk to you about five.
05:05First of all,
05:06I want to tell you about His power over storms.
05:09According to Matthew chapter 8,
05:11one day Jesus came down out of the mountains
05:13and walked to the shore,
05:14got in a boat with His disciples,
05:16went into the back of the boat,
05:17and went to sleep.
05:19And Matthew 8, 25 says,
05:22His disciples came to Him
05:24and awoke Him, saying,
05:25Lord, save us.
05:26We are perishing.
05:27And He said to them,
05:28Why are you fearful,
05:29O you of little faith?
05:31And He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea,
05:33and there was a great calm.
05:35So the men marveled, saying,
05:36Who can this be,
05:37that even the winds and the sea obey Him?
05:40Jesus went to sleep in the boat,
05:42and there was a storm,
05:42and the waves came up,
05:44and the wind came up,
05:45and Jesus was a sound sleeper.
05:48And the disciples came in,
05:49woke Him up, and said,
05:50Lord, don't you even care about us?
05:52You're going to let us drown in the middle of this?
05:54And these verses tell us
05:55that when Jesus was awakened,
05:57He rebuked the wind
05:58like a parent would rebuke their little child.
06:02And the wind stopped,
06:03and the waves were calm.
06:06And the Bible says that Jesus did all of this,
06:09and He knew in advance He was going to do it.
06:11In other words, this was a setup.
06:15He knew there was going to be a storm.
06:17He slept in the back of the boat.
06:18I've often thought He was peeking,
06:20but I don't know for sure.
06:21And in the midst of that storm,
06:25He taught His disciples
06:27that no matter how great the storm might be,
06:29if Jesus is in your boat, don't worry.
06:32He's got it in control.
06:35His power in the storms.
06:37Let me talk with you about His power over shortage.
06:40I like that word, shortage,
06:42because that describes what life is like.
06:44We don't have enough money.
06:45We don't have enough time.
06:47We don't have enough room.
06:49We don't have enough,
06:50and you can make your list.
06:51Life is about not having enough.
06:54No matter how much you have,
06:55there's always something you don't have enough of.
06:57You don't have enough energy.
06:58Can I get a witness?
07:01But Jesus is the one who has power over shortage.
07:06One of the only miracles that is recorded
07:09in the four Gospels
07:11is the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.
07:14These crowds were following Jesus in the hills of Galilee,
07:17and one day as he looked out,
07:19he saw they'd been following all day,
07:21and they hadn't had anything to eat,
07:22and they were hungry.
07:23And he asked his disciple, Philip,
07:25where are we going to get enough bread
07:26that these people may eat?
07:29He was testing Philip, the Bible says,
07:31because he already knew what he was going to do.
07:32But Andrew came along, and he said,
07:36hey, I don't know where we're going to get all this food.
07:38Let me tell you what I know.
07:39There's this little boy who has five barley loaves
07:42and two small fish,
07:43but what are they among so many?
07:46And Jesus said, bring him to me.
07:47And the little boy came with his little lunch,
07:51and Jesus took the loaves and fish,
07:54and he looked up to heaven, and he blessed it,
07:56and he began breaking this apart
07:58and distributing it to the disciples.
08:00He had organized all of the people into groups of 50,
08:04and the disciples went around feeding all these people,
08:07and all he had was the little lunch,
08:09but the more he served, the more there was.
08:11It was a never-ending supply.
08:13And the Bible says after everybody was fed,
08:17there were 12 basketfuls left over.
08:20I never understood that,
08:21and then one day it dawned on me, duh.
08:23There were 12 disciples.
08:25They've got to have something to eat,
08:26so they took that lunch home.
08:28That's not in the Bible,
08:29but that's just sort of what I thought.
08:33Here's the thing that's so interesting.
08:35John 6 says that Jesus himself knew what he would do,
08:41or as the NIV puts it,
08:42he already had in mind what he was going to do.
08:47Did you know that the Bible says
08:49that your heavenly Father knows
08:50that you need all these things?
08:52When you pray,
08:54you're not giving Jesus new information.
08:58You say, well, then,
08:59if he already knows, why should I pray?
09:01Let me answer that very clearly,
09:03because he commands you to pray, so pray.
09:07But know in your praying
09:08that when you bring your petitions to him,
09:10he already knows what he's going to do.
09:11Remember, we learned about Jesus.
09:13He lives in the eternal present.
09:16He doesn't have to go someplace
09:17and figure out what he's going to do in the future
09:19because the future is in the present.
09:22He already knows what he's going to do.
09:24Just like that day on that hillside
09:26before Philip said,
09:28Lord, what are we going to do?
09:29We don't have enough food.
09:30And Andrew said,
09:31oh, yeah, we got this one lunch.
09:32Jesus already knew what he was going to do.
09:34He was going to teach his disciples
09:36how to trust him during times of shortage.
09:39The Lord Jesus Christ has power over shortage.
09:42You may not have enough money,
09:43but he knows that.
09:45You may not have enough energy.
09:46He knows that.
09:47You may not have enough space.
09:49He knows that.
09:50You may be out of a lot of stuff,
09:51but you can't be out of anything
09:52that Jesus doesn't know you're out of.
09:54And in the midst of it all,
09:57as he was in that boat that day,
09:59as he was on the hillside that day,
10:02he knows what you need,
10:04and he's ready to help you.
10:05Here's the third thing.
10:07Power over storms,
10:09power over shortage,
10:11power over sickness.
10:12I can give testimony to that one.
10:15Jesus exercised power over illness
10:18when he was on this earth.
10:20And one thing about it
10:21that's really interesting
10:22is you read all of the accounts.
10:24He didn't have any one specific method.
10:27You can never say,
10:28okay, if you do this now,
10:29then you'll be healed.
10:31Perhaps his most unusual miracle
10:33and one of my favorite stories,
10:34and I have no idea why,
10:35but I always have loved this story.
10:37Peter, in the garden,
10:39swung his sword through the air
10:41and cut off the ear
10:42of the servant of the high priest.
10:44When he saw what they were going to do
10:45to his Jesus,
10:46he got really ticked off
10:47and he pulled his sword out
10:48and he cut the ear off
10:49of the person who came to get Jesus.
10:51And Jesus touched the man's head
10:53and instantly his ear
10:55was reattached
10:56and perfectly restored.
10:58I need to tell you,
10:59I've watched some of the healing things on TV.
11:01I never saw anything like that.
11:03Nobody ever does that.
11:05Only Jesus can do that.
11:07All those who Jesus healed
11:09in the Gospels,
11:10listen to me,
11:10all of the people Jesus healed
11:12eventually got sick again
11:14and they grew old
11:16and they died.
11:18His healing was not permanent.
11:19But because Jesus has authority over illness,
11:24one day he's going to resurrect us in glory
11:26and we're going to have ageless bodies
11:28and we'll realize as we should
11:30now except by faith
11:32that the sufferings of this present life
11:34are not worth comparing
11:35with the glories that will be revealed.
11:39Perhaps the greatest thing
11:40that Jesus ever did,
11:42most people think this was
11:43his greatest moment on earth
11:44beside his crucifixion.
11:46One day, one of his friends named Lazarus
11:48got sick
11:49and he died.
11:53The King James Bible says
11:55he was so dead he stinketh.
11:58That's the old King James.
11:59We have a new King James.
12:01It's a little more delicate than that.
12:04But Jesus didn't say
12:06that Lazarus' sickness
12:07wouldn't include death.
12:09He said that it wouldn't end in death.
12:11It would provide instead
12:13an occasion for God to be glorified.
12:14So one day he stood outside of his tomb
12:16and he said,
12:16Lazarus, come forth.
12:19And if he hadn't said Lazarus,
12:20all the dead people
12:21would have come out of their graves that day.
12:23He made sure he called him by name
12:25because one day he's going to come back
12:26and the trumpet will sound
12:27and we're going to all be called out of our graves
12:30if we die before he returns.
12:33Because of the resurrection of Jesus,
12:35we can claim the promise
12:36that while we may not be healed down here,
12:39we'll all be healed up there.
12:41Amen?
12:42One day we'll have perfect bodies.
12:43I don't never get tired
12:45of thinking about the extreme makeover
12:47that's going to take place
12:48on our way to heaven.
12:49Won't that be something?
12:52So he has power over storms.
12:53He has power over shortage.
12:55He has power over sickness.
12:56He has power over Satan.
12:58One day the devil tempted him.
13:00Three times he tempted him.
13:02Why did Satan do that?
13:03He was trying to derail the gospel,
13:06get rid of the plan of redemption,
13:08get Jesus to accomplish
13:10his eternal work in fleshly means,
13:14take control of something
13:15that he already had control of in time.
13:19And Satan tempted him.
13:20And the Lord Jesus didn't get intellectual with him.
13:23He didn't argue with him.
13:25He didn't do any of those things
13:27that we normally think he would do.
13:28He just said,
13:29Satan, it is written.
13:31And then he quoted Scripture.
13:33Three times Satan tested him.
13:36Three times Jesus quoted Scripture.
13:38I've always been amazed
13:39that all of those three Scriptures
13:40came out of our most famous,
13:42lovely devotional book, Deuteronomy.
13:46Come on.
13:48When was the last time you quoted Deuteronomy?
13:50Jesus did it.
13:52They were powerful verses.
13:53And the Bible says at the end,
13:55Satan left him
13:56and the angels came to minister to him.
13:59You see, Satan couldn't penetrate
14:01the purity of Jesus.
14:03He couldn't change the holiness
14:05of the Son of God.
14:06Not only can Satan
14:10not diminish the purity of Jesus,
14:12he cannot defy his authority.
14:16Shortly after Jesus was tempted,
14:18we are told that he was accosted
14:21by fallen spirits, by demons.
14:24The demons knew who Jesus was.
14:27Example, one day Jesus was preaching
14:28in the synagogue and a man
14:30with the spirit of an unclean demon
14:31cried out and said to Jesus,
14:33let us alone.
14:36What have we to do with you,
14:38Jesus of Nazareth?
14:39Did you come to destroy us?
14:41I know who you are.
14:42You are the Holy One of God.
14:43I've always thought that was a great verse
14:44because the demons in Jesus' day
14:47know more about him
14:48than most of the modernistic preachers
14:50in this day.
14:51They knew who he was.
14:52Jesus said,
14:55just be quiet and come out.
14:57The Bible says,
14:58in one last flurry of activity,
15:00the demon came out
15:00and the man was thrown to the ground.
15:02He wasn't hurt.
15:04And the crowd was watching.
15:05And this is what they said.
15:07What a word this is.
15:08For with authority and power,
15:10with authority and power,
15:12he commands the unclean spirits
15:14and they come out.
15:15Let me tell you something,
15:15men and women.
15:16The devil or his demons
15:18are no big deal to Jesus Christ.
15:22He is in power over them
15:23in that day and in this day,
15:26in their lives and in our lives.
15:29You have satanic temptation
15:30going on in your life,
15:31just remember,
15:32Satan cannot handle
15:34the Lord Jesus Christ.
15:35You plead the blood of Jesus
15:37and you will find it out.
15:41Here's one that touches all of us
15:42in one way or the other.
15:44This is the last thing
15:45I want to tell you
15:46about the works of Jesus.
15:48He has power over sadness.
15:50Did you know that?
15:52Are you sad?
15:53Some people come to church sad.
15:55Maybe something happened to you yesterday
15:57that makes you sad.
15:58Maybe you had a phone call
15:59from somebody you love
16:00and it didn't turn out right.
16:02Or on the way to church,
16:03you found out something
16:04that you didn't know
16:05that just makes you sad.
16:06I have a lot of sadness
16:07just about the people that I love
16:09and the things they go through.
16:11There's a lot of hurt
16:12and trouble
16:15and sickness
16:17and discord.
16:20If you let it get to you,
16:21it could make you sad
16:22all the time.
16:24But I'm here to tell you
16:25that Jesus has power
16:26over heartache
16:27and heartbreak.
16:28And one way of figuring that out
16:30is to track his words.
16:32I'm going to tell you something.
16:33I've never done this before.
16:34I don't know.
16:35I've not heard this before,
16:36but I want to tell you something
16:37that I found out this week.
16:38On five occasions,
16:40Jesus walked into a situation
16:42and he said to the person,
16:45be of good cheer.
16:48For instance,
16:50when a paralyzed man
16:51was overwhelmed
16:52with a guilty conscience,
16:54he was brought to Jesus,
16:56our Lord said to him,
16:56Matthew 9, 2,
16:57son, be of good cheer.
17:00Your sins are forgiven.
17:02How many of you know
17:02when you realize
17:03your sins have been forgiven,
17:05you can be of good cheer?
17:06For a moment,
17:07for a little while,
17:08before the trouble starts,
17:12forgiveness makes you happy,
17:13doesn't it?
17:15When a woman crept up
17:16behind Jesus
17:17and touched the hem of his robe,
17:18seeking healing,
17:19he turned around
17:20and he said to her,
17:21be of good cheer, daughter.
17:23Your faith has made you well.
17:26When the disciples
17:27were exhausted and frightened
17:29and sinking in the middle of the night
17:30on the Sea of Galilee,
17:31Jesus came to them
17:32walking across the waves
17:34and shouting,
17:35be of good cheer.
17:36They're scared out of their minds.
17:38Be of good cheer.
17:39It is I.
17:39Do not be afraid.
17:42When the 12 were distraught
17:44on the night Jesus was arrested,
17:45he said to them,
17:46in the world,
17:47you will have tribulation,
17:49but be of good cheer.
17:50I have overcome the world.
17:53And when the apostle Paul
17:54encountered a pressure
17:55and imprisonment in Jerusalem,
17:57Acts 23, 11 says
17:58that the Lord stood by him
18:00and said,
18:01be of good cheer, Paul,
18:03for as you have testified
18:04for me in Jerusalem,
18:06so you must also bear witness
18:07in Rome.
18:10So, if you're gloomy
18:11over some situation
18:12for which you can't find an answer,
18:14take time and study
18:15the five passages
18:17where Jesus says,
18:18be of good cheer.
18:19Read them in other translations.
18:21Look up the cross references.
18:23Be of good cheer.
18:25Listen to me.
18:25Jesus wasn't just making a suggestion.
18:28He wasn't just using a cliche.
18:30He was commanding them,
18:32cheer up, be of good cheer.
18:36What a glorious command.
18:39He was a miracle-working God.
18:41He did powerful things.
18:44And that's why we're so surprised
18:46when we read John chapter 14
18:49and verse 12
18:50where Jesus is talking to Philip
18:52and he says to Philip,
18:53most assuredly,
18:54I say to you, Philip,
18:55that he who believes in me
18:57the works that I do,
18:59he will do
19:00and greater works than these
19:03he will do
19:04because I go to my Father.
19:06Now, that is an astounding statement.
19:09Jesus said,
19:10Philip, all the things that I do,
19:13you're going to be able to do them,
19:14but Philip, don't be happy with that
19:16because you're going to be able
19:17to do greater works than I do
19:19because I go to the Father.
19:22Now, why could that happen?
19:24Listen, when Jesus was crucified
19:29and resurrected and he ascended to the Father,
19:3240 days after that,
19:34the Holy Spirit was given to the world by the Father.
19:37When Jesus went back to heaven,
19:40God sent his Holy Spirit
19:41to live within every believer
19:43so that while Jesus was on this earth,
19:46he was localized,
19:46but now the Holy Spirit has come
19:49and Jesus is in all of us who believe
19:51and we're all over the place.
19:53So, we can do greater works, first of all,
19:56because we have a greater message.
19:58Listen to me.
19:59When Jesus was on this earth
20:012,000 years ago,
20:04he did great things.
20:06We've talked about some of them.
20:08When he healed somebody,
20:11that was a temporal thing.
20:13That person died or got sick again.
20:17All of his miracles were temporal
20:20in the physical realm
20:21and they weren't really done in the first place
20:25for the person upon whom the miracle was performed,
20:27but so that it might be a sign
20:29that others would believe in Jesus.
20:31But when you and I present the gospel of Jesus Christ
20:35and somebody becomes a Christian,
20:36when we go to our neighbors or our loved ones
20:38or our family or our friends
20:40and we tell them about Jesus
20:41and they become a Christian,
20:43that meets a permanent need in that person's life
20:46and they get what the Bible calls eternal life.
20:50And the Bible says,
20:51and I give unto them eternal life
20:53and they shall never perish.
20:55When you get eternal life,
20:57you may die physically,
20:57you will never die spiritually,
20:59you will always be related to God.
21:01So, the greater miracle
21:02is not healing somebody from a sickness.
21:05The greater miracle is helping them
21:06come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
21:10We have a greater message
21:11and we have a greater ministry.
21:14Did you know that when Jesus Christ was on this earth,
21:17he located himself in a small portion
21:20of the land of Palestine and he never left?
21:24Someone has said that Jesus never left a space
21:27even close to the size of Vermont.
21:33Wherever Jesus' miracles were happening,
21:35Jesus had to be there.
21:38What Jesus is saying to us is this,
21:40while I was on this earth, I was localized.
21:43I could only touch individual men and women in my travels
21:46and speak to a few local audiences.
21:48But believe me, after I am gone
21:50and the Holy Spirit comes to fill and empower
21:53my sons and daughters,
21:55my ministry will be as far spread
21:57as Christians are far spread.
22:01Whenever there's a believer, there's a ministry.
22:05We have a greater message,
22:07we have a greater ministry,
22:08but there's something else.
22:10We have greater miracles.
22:11I've touched on this briefly,
22:12but let me come back to this.
22:14The miracles that Jesus did
22:16while he was here on this earth
22:17are all temporal in nature.
22:19When you get healed physically,
22:22you ultimately will die.
22:25But when you get healed spiritually,
22:27you will never die.
22:28That healing is forever.
22:30That's why when we go with the gospel,
22:33we are witnessing the greatest miracle
22:35that can ever happen in this world.
22:38You see, in the accounting system of God's kingdom,
22:41physical, temporal results are great,
22:44but spiritual, eternal results are even greater.
22:47And Jesus promised his disciples
22:50that they would do spiritual works
22:52that would exceed his own
22:54in their geographical reach
22:56and their eternal results.
22:58Let me tell you,
22:59we don't do greater works than Jesus.
23:02That's, in the truest sense,
23:04Jesus is the greatest.
23:06But our works are greater
23:08because of the humble weakness of the instrument.
23:11The same power that through Jesus
23:13brought regeneration and life to many
23:15now flows through us.
23:17Can you get that?
23:18He came to seek and to save that which is lost.
23:21Now he lets us go seek and save the lost.
23:24We can't save them in our own power.
23:26We can just point them to Jesus.
23:28What we get to be the preachers
23:29and the teachers and the witnesses
23:31and get to tell people everything
23:34that will change their life
23:36more than any human miracle
23:37you could ever give a person,
23:40when you give them Jesus,
23:41you give them the best gift
23:43there ever is to be given.
23:46And it's a gift that lasts forever
23:48and ever and ever.
23:50Our doing the works that are greater than Jesus
23:53doesn't diminish his work.
23:55It simply amplifies it.
23:57Not only did he do his work in himself,
23:59but he found a way to do his work in us.
24:02And he chose us.
24:04And he enables us.
24:06Makes it possible for us to do it.
24:08It's the greatest thing you will ever do.
24:11The greatest calling.
24:12The Bible says when you serve God with all your heart,
24:15you will be able to do greater things
24:17than Jesus did when he was on this earth
24:19because he went to the Father.
24:22And the next verse in John 14 says,
24:24if you ask anything in my name, I will do it,
24:27that the Father might be glorified.
24:30Folks, I don't think we realize what God has given us,
24:32the privilege and the opportunity we have to serve him.
24:35By every standard of imagination,
24:38this is the greatest thing in the world.
24:40Why would we ever stoop to do anything else?
24:43We have the greatest message.
24:45We have the greatest opportunities.
24:47And God has called us to this.
24:49Go into all the world and preach the gospel, he said,
24:51and lo, I am with you, even to the end of the age.
24:54What he calls us to do, he will equip us to do.
24:57So if you're standing on the edge of something
24:59you think God wants you to do
25:01and you've been a little bit afraid,
25:02if he called you, just do it.
25:06Step out and watch what he does in your life.
25:09If you stay back and you never step out,
25:11you'll never find out.
25:13Take the step of faith
25:14and watch him do great things in your life.
25:19Hallelujah.
25:19Thank you for watching Turning Point.
