05:25The Exile.
05:27The book of Revelation is unique
05:29because in the very first few verses,
05:32it tells us what kind of book it is.
05:35This is the kind of book that John was told to write,
05:38and this is what we know about it
05:40just by reading the first few verses of the first chapter.
05:43First of all, we discover that it's a prophetic book.
05:47Verse 1 says,
05:48The revelation of Jesus Christ,
05:50which God gave him to show his servants
05:52things which must shortly take place.
05:56This is not a book about what's happened in the past
05:58or what's going on in the present.
06:00This is a book about what's going to happen in the future.
06:03In fact, the book begins with the key word.
06:07It's the word apocalypsis.
06:10It's not a word we use in our language today,
06:12but if you look at it carefully,
06:14you can see it's where we get the word apocalypse.
06:18And often when you hear that word today,
06:20it's in some movie that's coming out.
06:22Have you noticed how many times they use that word
06:24for the scary movies, the apocalypse?
06:29And when you think of that word like that,
06:31you think of some dark thing,
06:33some disaster associated with the end of the world.
06:36But interestingly enough,
06:38the Greek word apocalypsis has nothing to do with that at all.
06:42The word apocalypse means an unveiling.
06:47It literally means a manifestation, an uncovering.
06:51So the book of Revelation,
06:54though it tells us about the end times,
06:56is primarily a revelation.
06:59And notice at the top of your Bibles,
07:02if you have a Bible like mine,
07:03it says the revelation, what, of Jesus Christ.
07:08The book of Revelation is the apocalypsis.
07:12It's the revelation of Jesus Christ.
07:14And then it's a personal book.
07:17Verse 2 says,
07:18John bore witness to the word of God
07:20and to the testimony of Jesus Christ
07:23to all things that he saw.
07:26Now look in your Bibles at verse 11
07:28and notice what it says.
07:30Christ said to John,
07:31what you see, write in a book
07:34and send it to the seven churches
07:36which are in Asia.
07:38And then he lists them.
07:40Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira,
07:43Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.
07:46And if you read the second and third chapters
07:48of the book of Revelation,
07:49you'll find all those letters,
07:51one right after the other,
07:53short little letters that were written by John
07:55to individual churches.
07:57John wrote these seven letters
07:59given to him by the Lord
08:00to these seven actual churches.
08:03And though those churches are historic
08:04in terms of they took,
08:06actually were real churches back then,
08:08the letters that were written to those churches
08:10are very important
08:11because they tell us
08:14what Jesus thinks about the church.
08:16And if you read these letters,
08:18in fact, I tell young pastors this,
08:19you want to know what's wrong
08:20with the church today?
08:21Read the seven letters
08:22that Jesus wrote
08:23to the seven churches in Revelation
08:25and you will discover
08:26almost all of the same problems
08:28that we have in our churches today.
08:30If we would just take note
08:31of what Jesus said to those churches,
08:33we would save ourselves a lot of trouble
08:35and get ourselves out of a lot of messes
08:37that we get in
08:38because we don't hear the word of the Lord.
08:41So it's a prophetic book
08:42and it's a personal one,
08:43but here's the one that gets most people.
08:45It's a picture book,
08:46a pictorial book.
08:48In verses one and two,
08:50we read,
08:50he sent and he signified
08:53by his angel to his servant, John.
08:56I want you to think about that word signified.
08:58Take it apart and say it the way you would
09:00if you took it apart.
09:01He signified.
09:03What is a sign?
09:04It's a symbol.
09:05And in the book of Revelation
09:07are a lot of symbols
09:08and these symbols are really important.
09:11Why are there so many symbols
09:13in the book of Revelation?
09:14Well, one of the reasons is
09:15that symbolism is not weakened by time.
09:19In other words,
09:19a symbol allows us
09:21to apply the lesson today
09:22just as it was applied back then
09:24because symbols are not affected by time.
09:27A beast in the first century
09:28is a beast in the last century.
09:31And when John writes these words
09:33that were given to him by the Lord,
09:35the Lord gives him some signs to use.
09:37Now, don't be mystified by that
09:39because, listen carefully,
09:41the book of Revelation
09:42is the most self-interpreting book
09:44in the Bible.
09:45What I mean by that is
09:47if you read something
09:48you don't understand,
09:49just be patient and keep reading.
09:50It will probably tell you
09:51in a few verses what it means.
09:54The symbols and the signs
09:56of the book of Revelation
09:57are there so that the message
10:00will convey the same thing to us
10:02that it conveyed to the people
10:03who heard it the first time.
10:06And it imparts values
10:08and it arouses emotion.
10:10There's something about a symbol
10:12that explodes in your mind.
10:15For instance,
10:17that man's a dictator.
10:19That's all right.
10:20He's a tyrant.
10:22That's a little better.
10:23He's a beast.
10:26Did you know that
10:27in the book of Revelation
10:28there are two beasts,
10:29one that comes out of the sea
10:31and one that comes off of the land?
10:32They're two incredibly evil people
10:35and the Bible speaks of them
10:36as beasts
10:37because it arouses
10:39a different emotion in you
10:40when you hear that.
10:41For instance,
10:42in the book of Revelation,
10:44Satan is symbolized.
10:45You know how he's symbolized?
10:47He's a dragon.
10:48Whoa.
10:50You can read
10:51the book of Revelation
10:52and not understand it,
10:54but you cannot read it
10:55and ignore it.
10:56It gets into your head.
10:58It gets into your mind
10:59and it makes you want to know
11:01what does this mean?
11:03It's a prophetic book,
11:04a personal book,
11:05a pictorial book,
11:06and then here's one of the great things
11:08about this book.
11:09It's a profitable book.
11:12The book of Revelation
11:13is the only book in the Bible
11:15that I'm aware of
11:16that has a blessing
11:18associated with it
11:20for those who will read it.
11:22And it's not in the book of Revelation
11:24just once.
11:25It's in twice.
11:26It's at the beginning of the book
11:28and at the end of the book.
11:29Let me show you the verses.
11:31Revelation 1, 3.
11:33Blessed is he who reads
11:36and those who hear
11:37the words of this prophecy
11:38and keep those things
11:40which are written in it
11:42for the time is near.
11:44At the end of the book
11:46in verse 7 of chapter 22,
11:48we read it again.
11:49Behold, I am coming quickly.
11:52Blessed is he
11:54who keeps the word
11:55of the prophecy of this book.
11:59The Bible says
12:01that when we study
12:02and we learn
12:03and we keep
12:04the words
12:05of the book of Revelation,
12:07Almighty God
12:08will bless us.
12:12And I have watched that
12:14over the years.
12:15God blesses
12:16those
12:17who study
12:18and understand
12:20this book.
12:21Any of you all in trouble?
12:22Any of you all going through
12:23tough times?
12:24Any of you all having
12:25some issues in your life?
12:27And you know,
12:28one of the great things
12:28people ask all the time is,
12:30Pastor, where's this all going?
12:33When they think about
12:33what's happening in our,
12:35you know,
12:35our culture has eroded more
12:37in our lifetime
12:38as we sit in this room today
12:39than in all the time
12:40before that.
12:42In our generation,
12:44the culture of America
12:45has eroded more
12:46than in all the generations
12:47before us.
12:48We are in a free fall
12:50to oblivion
12:50if something doesn't happen.
12:52And so the question is,
12:54where's this all going?
12:55Well, the book of Revelation
12:56tells you
12:57we know where it's going.
12:59God's in charge.
13:00May look like
13:01we're in a mess right now,
13:02but don't let that
13:03be your only information.
13:05This book was given to us.
13:06It's the last book
13:07in the Bible,
13:08the last thing
13:09the Lord wanted us to know
13:10before the book was closed.
13:12And it's all about
13:13where it's all going
13:14and what God has in store
13:16for those who love him.
13:18And I want you to be encouraged
13:19as we understand that.
13:21This book is profitable
13:22for personal application.
13:25The book of Revelation
13:26is not just some prophecies
13:27about the future.
13:28It's filled with instruction
13:29and encouragement for us
13:31in the present.
13:32When we read this book,
13:34it should change
13:35the way we live.
13:37It should govern our conduct.
13:39Revelation puts everything
13:40into perspective.
13:41This book is profitable
13:43for public assembly.
13:44Public reading
13:45and exhortation
13:46were an integral part
13:47of the gatherings
13:48of the early church.
13:49And then it was profitable
13:51for prophetic anticipation.
13:52In the third verse
13:53of Revelation 1,
13:55the verse ends
13:56with the phrase,
13:57the time is near.
14:00Revelation 22.10 says,
14:02the time is at hand.
14:03A lot of people
14:03have taken those phrases
14:04and said,
14:05well, you see,
14:06Jesus is coming back
14:07and then they'll get crazy
14:08and they'll actually predict
14:09when it's going to happen.
14:10The Bible tells us
14:12that no man knows
14:13when the coming
14:13of the Lord will happen.
14:15Only the Father
14:16in heaven knows that.
14:17Not even Jesus
14:18had that information
14:19while he was on this earth.
14:20The angels don't know
14:22and I promise you
14:23there's no preacher
14:24who knows.
14:25We know the time is near.
14:27We see the signs
14:28that it's approaching,
14:29but no one knows
14:30the day nor the hour
14:32when Jesus comes back.
14:35But when the Scripture says
14:37his coming is near at hand
14:39or when it says,
14:40as we've mentioned,
14:41the time is near,
14:42all that means is
14:44that his coming
14:45is the next event
14:47on the prophetic calendar,
14:48that there's nothing else
14:50that has to happen
14:51before that,
14:52that he has to come
14:53and it's the next major event.
14:55So we should anticipate
14:57that he's coming
14:57and not try to predict
14:59when it happens.
15:01And then notice
15:03as we continue this
15:04that the book of Revelation
15:06is a practical book.
15:08I think this is one
15:09of the most exciting things
15:10about studying this book.
15:12This book is practical.
15:15First of all,
15:16when you study this,
15:17it empowers you
15:18to live a productive life.
15:21How many of you know
15:22that if you know for sure
15:23where something's going
15:24and how it's going to end,
15:25it affects what happens
15:26in between?
15:28And in Matthew 24, 46,
15:30we have this little phrase,
15:32blessed is that servant
15:33whom his master,
15:35when he comes,
15:37will find so doing
15:39or he will be faithful.
15:40And this is at the end
15:41of a story
15:42where he's talking
15:42about a man going away
15:44and leaving his servants
15:45in charge
15:45and believing
15:46that his servants
15:47are going to represent him
15:48faithfully while he's gone.
15:49And he says,
15:50when he comes back,
15:51that servant is blessed
15:52if his master finds him
15:54doing what he's supposed to do.
15:56And that's the point
15:58of prophecy.
15:59When we know he's coming,
16:01we want to look after things
16:03the way we should
16:04if he would intercept
16:06our lives
16:07before we leave this room.
16:09We want to live every day
16:11in light of the fact
16:12that we believe
16:14the master's coming
16:15and we're supposed
16:16to be serving him
16:17and living for him
16:18and let him not find us,
16:20you know,
16:21goofing off.
16:22When you really believe
16:24that Jesus is coming back,
16:25it is a motivating factor
16:27in your life.
16:28Studying prophecy
16:29empowers us
16:30to live positive lives.
16:32The book of Revelation
16:34promotes a positive mindset.
16:36As you study it,
16:38you begin to realize
16:38that everything
16:39that is happening
16:40in our world today
16:41is heading somewhere.
16:44In the book of Revelation,
16:45as in no other book,
16:46we see God's sovereign hand
16:48upon the affairs of the world.
16:50We see him in control
16:51even though so much
16:52here on earth
16:53looks like it's totally
16:54out of control.
16:56And John says that Jesus Christ,
16:58verse 5 of chapter 1,
17:00is the ruler
17:01over the kings
17:03of the earth.
17:05Now, this is not a statement
17:07about the future reign
17:08of Christ.
17:09It's a statement
17:10about his present reign.
17:12He is today,
17:14this very hour,
17:16the ruler
17:16over the kings
17:18of the earth.
17:19Now, I don't know
17:20if you've been noticing,
17:21but the kings
17:22of the earth
17:22have been doing
17:23some pretty strange
17:25things lately.
17:27But the Lord God
17:28is in charge.
17:30He's the king of kings
17:31and he's the Lord of lords.
17:32And ladies and gentlemen,
17:33one day,
17:34every knee will bow
17:35and every tongue
17:36will confess
17:37that Jesus Christ
17:39is Lord.
17:40Amen?
17:44So, if you really believe that,
17:46if you really believe
17:46what I've said
17:47and you believe
17:47that's what happens
17:48when you study this book,
17:49here's a couple things
17:50I need to tell you.
17:52You don't need to walk around
17:53with your head down.
17:54I know a lot of Christians
17:55are discouraged these days.
17:56I talk to them
17:57all over the country
17:58and I receive thousands
18:00and thousands of emails
18:01every month from people
18:02telling me about
18:03all the kinds of problems
18:04you could never even believe.
18:06So many of them
18:06are testimonies
18:07to God's grace,
18:08but many of them
18:09are just saying
18:09this is what's going on in life.
18:11There's a lot of reasons
18:12if you want to be discouraged
18:13to be discouraged,
18:14but you can't be discouraged
18:15if you really understand prophecy.
18:17Because if you understand prophecy,
18:19you realize that
18:20whatever you're experiencing
18:21right now
18:21is just for a short time
18:23and there's something
18:24better coming.
18:25And that's why you read
18:26in the words of Jesus,
18:28look up,
18:29lift up your head
18:30because your redemption
18:32is drawing near.
18:33It doesn't say look down,
18:36bend your shoulders,
18:37walk stooped over,
18:38discouraged.
18:39No, no.
18:39It says look up,
18:42lift up your head
18:44because your redemption
18:45is drawing near.
18:47Paul, who after teaching us
18:49about the coming of Christ,
18:51at the end of his passage says,
18:53comfort one another
18:54with these words.
18:55With what words?
18:56That Jesus Christ
18:57is coming back.
18:59And then studying prophecy
19:01empowers you
19:02to live a pure life.
19:03Let me just touch
19:04on this quickly.
19:05Here's a verse of Scripture
19:07that teaches that.
19:081 John 3, 2 and 3.
19:09Listen to what it says.
19:10When he is revealed,
19:12we shall be like him,
19:14for we shall see him
19:15as he is.
19:16And everyone who has
19:18this hope in him
19:22purifies himself
19:23just as he is pure.
19:25What does that mean?
19:26Well, let me put it down
19:28on the lower shelf.
19:29Is there anything
19:30about your life
19:31that you would change
19:32if you knew
19:33you were going to stand
19:34before Jesus Christ
19:35this afternoon?
19:37Well, that's it.
19:38When you know Jesus
19:39is coming back,
19:40it makes you want to live
19:41a life that's honoring to him.
19:43When he comes back,
19:44I want him to find me
19:45doing the right things.
19:46I don't want to be backslidden
19:48when Jesus comes back.
19:49I don't want to be
19:50walking afar off.
19:51I want to be walking
19:52in fellowship with him.
19:53I want to be living.
19:54When I think about
19:55the Lord coming back,
19:56I don't want to be embarrassed
19:57at his coming.
19:58I don't want to be ashamed
19:59at his coming.
20:01The coming of the Lord
20:02is a strong motivation
20:03to live a righteous life.
20:05Just think about that
20:07as you have opportunity.
20:09And the last thing,
20:10this book is a purposeful book.
20:13Revelation is a book
20:14that's written on purpose.
20:16It's written to tell us
20:17about two things,
20:18the return of the king
20:19and the reign of the king.
20:22First of all,
20:23it says that Jesus Christ
20:24is coming back.
20:25There's going to be a king
20:26on this earth one day.
20:27Verse 7 of Revelation 1 says,
20:30Behold, he is coming with clouds,
20:32and every eye will see him,
20:35even they who pierced him,
20:37and all the tribes of the earth
20:39will mourn because of him.
20:41This is just one of many verses
20:45that tell us that Jesus Christ
20:47is coming back.
20:48Daniel saw it in his prophecy
20:50in the Old Testament.
20:51He wrote it like this,
20:53I was watching in the night visions,
20:55and behold,
20:56one like the Son of Man
20:58coming with the clouds of heaven.
21:01And in his Olivet Discourse,
21:03Jesus spoke of his coming
21:05in similar terms.
21:06He said,
21:07the sign of the Son of Man
21:08will appear in heaven,
21:09and then all of the tribes
21:11of the earth will mourn,
21:12and they will see the Son of Man
21:14coming on the clouds of heaven
21:16with power and great glory.
21:18And John expanded upon Jesus' words,
21:21and he said,
21:22when he comes,
21:23listen to this,
21:24every eye will see him,
21:26and it's going to happen.
21:28The king's coming back.
21:30And when he comes back,
21:32he's going to set up his kingdom,
21:33and he's going to rule.
21:35That's what it says.
21:37He's going to reign.
21:37Verse 8,
21:38he says,
21:39I am the Alpha and the Omega,
21:41the beginning and the end,
21:42says the Lord,
21:43who was and is and is to come,
21:45the Almighty.
21:47When he comes the second time
21:49with his saints,
21:50he's going to set up
21:51his kingdom on this earth,
21:53and for a thousand years,
21:54there will be a rule of righteousness
21:56on planet earth.
21:58And the Bible says,
21:59if we're followers of his,
22:00we will reign with him.
22:03We will rule with him on this earth.
22:07It's no wonder to me
22:08that after John wrote all these things
22:10down in this book,
22:11that it was given to him
22:13just from the Lord,
22:14at the end of the book,
22:15do you know what he said?
22:16Listen to this.
22:18Even so come, Lord Jesus.
22:22I think that's what I would have said.
22:24In fact, that's what I say now.
22:26The more I understand
22:28about what God has in view for us
22:29as he comes back,
22:30my heart says this.
22:32Even so come, Lord Jesus.
22:35How many of you know
22:35that it seems like
22:36in our current situation,
22:38there may not be any other answer.
22:40Even so come, Lord Jesus.
22:43Yet while we wait,
22:45we still need the revelation
22:47from Jesus that he gave to John.
22:51It's a revelation
22:52which changes everything.
22:53It's a revelation
22:55that God is on his throne
22:58and he is working out his strategies
23:01from the control room of heaven
23:02and one day he is sending
23:05his son Jesus Christ
23:06back to this earth
23:08and he will make all things right.
23:12And I praise God
23:14that I know that in my heart.
23:16And every day when I get up,
23:17if I'm tempted to get discouraged,
23:20it takes me a little while,
23:21but I finally get around to the fact
23:22that the God I serve
23:25has got it all in control.
23:26It may seem out of control to me,
23:28may be out of control to me,
23:30but it's not out of control to him.
23:33And he loves us
23:34and he's cared for us
23:35and he's provided a way for us
23:37to be a part of everything
23:38he wants to do going forward.
23:40And he tells us
23:41that if we put our trust in him
23:42and we give him our lives
23:44and ask him for forgiveness
23:45of our sins,
23:46we become a part
23:47of his future plan.
23:49And one day he's going to come back
23:51and immediately take us up
23:52to be with him
23:54and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
23:56If you don't know that,
23:58when you hear about
23:58the return of Christ,
23:59I hope it puts within your heart
24:01a deep motivation
24:03to make sure that things are right
24:05between you and your maker.
24:07It's too late to do that
24:08when you die.
24:09You don't get to come back
24:10and get it right the second time.
24:12You've got to make things right
24:14during the time that God gives you.
24:16If you're not a Christian today,
24:18this would be a great time
24:19to become one.
24:21Dr. Jeremiah will return
