01:14we're going to go to Jesus and cast them down before him
01:17as an act of worship.
01:19You say, well, I guess it won't make that much difference

01:22and if that's all we're going to do with them,
01:24no, it'll make a big difference.

03:06Five Crowns.
03:08Lately, it seems there's an award show on TV
03:14just about every week.
03:15Have you noticed that?
03:17There's the Emmys, the Golden Globes,
03:19the Academy Awards, People's Choice Awards,
03:22Screen Actors Guild Awards,
03:25the Country Music Awards, and the Grammys.
03:28And those are just the big ones.
03:30Word is out that they're coming up with a new award
03:32for the best presenters in award ceremonies.
03:35Now, I'm not sure if that's true or not.
03:36But if you turn on the TV,
03:39the chances are that you're going to see somebody
03:41walking a red carpet or giving a thank you speech,
03:44and somehow the world keeps coming up
03:46with more ways to hand out trophies.
03:50Well, today I want to talk to you
03:51about the most important trophy ceremony
03:54you will ever be a part of.
03:57And it's a subject that is spoken about very little
03:59because there just are a lot of people
04:02who think that trophies and rewards
04:05are incompatible with a biblical lifestyle and truth.
04:09One such viewpoint was expressed in this quote that I found.
04:13In our day, we encounter those who deplore the idea of heaven
04:17as a place of rewards.
04:19They regard the promise of reward
04:20as a low and carnal incentive to righteousness,
04:24entirely unworthy of a mature person.
04:27They liken it to offering candy to a child
04:30if he will just be good,
04:31and they view this as inferior strategy.
04:35Such people say,
04:36we should not be lured into goodness
04:38by promises of a bonus,
04:40for goodness is its own reward.
04:43And that sounds pretty good, pretty logical,
04:46but the problem is it's out of tune with the Bible.
04:51The Bible doesn't give you any opportunity to believe that.
04:55Not only is the idea of rewards accepted,
04:58it's at the core of the growth of the early church.
05:01If you study history,
05:03you discover that the thing
05:04that made the early church prosper,
05:06well, there were four or five things.
05:08The zeal of the early Christians.
05:10Number two, the belief in future rewards and punishment.
05:15Number three, the power of miracles.
05:17Number four, the pure morals of Christians
05:20and the compact church organization.
05:23As you read through the Bible,
05:24what you discover is that rewards are never defended.
05:29They're just accepted.
05:30It's a part of the culture.
05:32For instance, Psalm 58 11 says,
05:35surely there is a reward for the righteous.
05:38Psalm 62 12 says,
05:40you, O Lord, render to each one according to his work.
05:43The New Testament opens with the Lord's promise of rewards.
05:49Listen to this.
05:50Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you
05:53and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake.
05:58Rejoice and be exceedingly glad
06:00for great is your reward in heaven.
06:04And when you get to the end of the New Testament,
06:07in Revelation 22 12,
06:09one of the last verses in the Bible,
06:11here's what the Bible says,
06:13Jesus is speaking,
06:14behold, I am coming quickly
06:15and my reward is with me
06:18to give everyone according to his work.
06:21And throughout the New Testament,
06:24rewards are assumed to be a part
06:26of the Christian's future experience.
06:28So let me just talk with you for a moment
06:30about the day of heaven's rewards.
06:33The Bible is very clear about how this happens,
06:36even though there's so much misunderstanding about it.
06:38The Bible tells us that after the church is taken to heaven
06:42by the rapture and the resurrection,
06:45individual believers will stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
06:50This is a time when the Lord will evaluate the lives of his people
06:54and reward them for their faithfulness,
06:57their service, and their obedience.
06:59This is the clear teaching of the New Testament,
07:02especially in the writings of the apostle Paul.
07:05Romans 14, 12 says,
07:07So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
07:122 Corinthians 5, 10 says,
07:15For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,
07:18that each one of us may receive the things done in the body
07:21according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
07:25Now, the Bible teaches that at the judgment seat,
07:27Jesus Christ will see through all of our posturing
07:30and our spinning,
07:31and he will see into our hearts motives
07:34for all that we have done.
07:36There will be no second guessing of any of these rewards.
07:39They will all be given out
07:40with the absolute assurance of integrity.
07:43And the distinction of heaven's rewards is like this.
07:47This important truth is that the judgment seat of Christ
07:51is not the final exam for heaven.
07:53Because believers have placed their faith in Christ
07:55and what he did on the cross,
07:58we will never be condemned for our sins.
08:01Once you accept Jesus Christ, you get eternal life.
08:04When does that start?
08:05The moment you believe.
08:06And eternal can't be interrupted.
08:08In other words,
08:09eternal life begins when you accept Jesus Christ,
08:11and it is never interrupted.
08:13You will spend eternity with God from that moment.
08:16Christ took our place for the judgment we deserve
08:19so we can stand before God forgiven and secure forever.
08:24Galatians 1, 4 says,
08:26Who gave himself for our sins,
08:28that he might deliver us from this present evil age,
08:32according to the will of God our Father.
08:35He who himself bore our sins in his own body on the tree,
08:40how shall he not also free to give us,
08:43says the Scripture, all things?
08:45Listen to me.
08:46When you became a Christian,
08:48you entered into a contract for heaven.
08:51When you said,
08:52I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior,
08:53what does the Bible say?
08:55The Bible says you get the gift of eternal life
08:57through Jesus Christ our Lord.
08:59And that gift can never be rescinded.
09:01It can never be taken away.
09:03I know some people believe you can lose your salvation.
09:05I don't think the Bible teaches that.
09:07I think you can lose your fellowship with Jesus,
09:09but you can't lose your salvation.
09:11So I just want to assure you,
09:13the judgment seat of Christ
09:14is not about whether or not you go to heaven.
09:17The judgment seat of Christ
09:19is for Christians who are already in heaven.
09:22One of the questions people often ask then is,
09:25if our sins are forgiven,
09:27why do we have to stand before the judgment seat of Christ?
09:31And the answer is found in the fact
09:33that forgiveness is about justification.
09:36It's about being made right with God.
09:37But rewards are based on the works a believer does
09:43after he has been saved.
09:46These are not works done to gain salvation.
09:49These are works that flow from a life
09:53that has already been saved.
09:55Paul explains this in a couple of key passages
09:58I want you to never forget.
09:59Ephesians 2, 8 through 10 says,
10:03For by grace you have been saved through faith,
10:06and that not of yourselves.
10:08It is the gift of God, not of works,
10:11lest anyone should boast.
10:13Now listen.
10:14For we are his workmanship,
10:16created in Christ Jesus for good works,
10:20which God prepared beforehand
10:22that we should walk in them.
10:23Notice, we are not saved by good works.
10:26We are saved for good works.
10:29We are not saved by the works that we do,
10:31but once we're saved,
10:32God expects us to live a certain kind of life.
10:35The works that we have as Christians
10:37are what comes before the judgment seat of Christ.
10:41Titus 3, 5 says it another way,
10:43Not by works of righteousness, which we have done,
10:47but according to his mercy he saved us
10:49through the washing of regeneration
10:51and renewing of the Holy Spirit.
10:53Now watch this.
10:54This is a faithful saying,
10:56And these things I want you to affirm constantly
10:59that those who have believed in God
11:01should be careful to maintain good works,
11:04for these things are good and profitable to men.
11:08So the Bible tells us that works are in the whole process.
11:14Works are not in the process to be saved,
11:16not by works, lest any man should boast.
11:18But once we're saved,
11:20God expects us to live in a certain way,
11:22and the judgment seat of Christ
11:24will determine whether or not
11:26we've wasted our Christian life
11:27or we have been faithful.
11:30So the judgment seat of Christ
11:32is not the final exam for heaven.
11:35Number two, the judgment seat of Christ
11:37is not found to be judging one believer by another.
11:42Because all believers will stand
11:43before the judgment seat of Christ,
11:45each of us is giving an account of himself to God.
11:49Did you hear that?
11:51We give account of ourselves to God.
11:53We have no right to judge the work of another believer.
11:56We do not even know what rewards
11:58we will receive for ourselves.
12:00How will we ever know
12:01how another person will be rewarded?
12:04This is what Paul was talking about
12:06when he wrote these words to the Corinthians.
12:08Listen carefully.
12:09Therefore, judge nothing before the time
12:12until the Lord comes,
12:14who will bring both to light
12:16the hidden things of darkness
12:17and reveal the counsels of the hearts.
12:20Then each one's praise will come from God.
12:23The day of heaven's rewards and the distinctions.
12:27Now, let's describe heaven's rewards.
12:29We often wonder,
12:30what will be the nature of these rewards?
12:32What will they look like?
12:34I want to talk to you about five crowns
12:36that are mentioned specifically in the Bible.
12:39These are five things
12:40that will be awarded
12:42at the judgment seat of Christ.
12:44First of all, the victor's crown.
12:47First Corinthians 9 says,
12:49Everyone who competes for the prize
12:51is temperate in all things.
12:53Now, they do it to obtain a perishable crown,
12:56but we for an imperishable crown.
12:59Therefore, I run not with uncertainty.
13:02I fight not as one who beats the air,
13:04but I discipline my body
13:06and bring it into subjection,
13:08lest when I have preached to others,
13:10I myself should be disqualified.
13:13Now, this is based upon the culture
13:15that Paul wrote to at that time.
13:16There were two kind of games
13:18that took place during Paul's day.
13:20There was the Olympic Games themselves,
13:23and there was another set of games
13:24called the Isthmian Games.
13:26And the Isthmian Games were held at Corinth.
13:30So, when Paul writes this letter to Corinth,
13:32they already know all of this.
13:33They see the background.
13:35The contestants in the games
13:37had to prove rigorous training for 10 months.
13:40The last month was spent at Corinth,
13:43and it was supervised every day
13:45in the gym and on the athletic fields.
13:47They didn't just get judged at the event.
13:50They were judged as they prepared for the event,
13:53getting ready for the race.
13:54And the race was always a major attraction at the games.
13:57And that is the figure Paul uses
13:59to illustrate the faithful Christian life.
14:02He says those who run in a race run all,
14:06but only one receives the prize.
14:09No one would train so hard for so long
14:11without at least having a thought that you might win.
14:15You run, you train to win.
14:18Yet out of the large number of runners,
14:20only one wins.
14:21The prize indicates that the apostle
14:23had in mind service and rewards,
14:26not salvation and life.
14:28A great difference between those races
14:30and the Christian race
14:31is that every Christian
14:33who will pay the price of careful training
14:35can be a winner.
14:37You can be a winner.
14:38I can be a winner
14:39if I'm willing to discipline myself to do that.
14:42In a sense, every Christian runs his own race,
14:46enabling each one of us to be a winner
14:47in winning souls to Christ.
14:50Paul, therefore, challenges all believers
14:52to run in such a way that you may win
14:54by setting aside anything
14:56that might hinder the reception of the gospel.
15:00The one who disciplines his body,
15:02like Paul said,
15:04was a candidate for the victor's crown.
15:07Most people, including many Christians,
15:09are instead slaves to their bodies.
15:13Their bodies tell their minds what to do.
15:15Their bodies decide when to eat
15:17and what to eat,
15:18how much to eat,
15:19when to sleep,
15:20when to get up,
15:21and so on.
15:22An athlete cannot allow that.
15:24If you're training for the Olympics,
15:25you're getting ready for an event,
15:27you follow the training rules,
15:29not your body.
15:31One thing I've learned,
15:32don't let your body tell you what to do
15:33because you will do the wrong thing
15:35most of the time.
15:36The Bible says that there are some people
15:38who live the Christian life
15:39with such great discipline
15:41that nothing else matters.
15:43They set their eyes on the goal
15:45of pleasing Christ
15:47and nothing else gets in their way.
15:49I've known a few people like that
15:51and so have you.
15:52Many of them find their way
15:53to the mission field.
15:55Many of them are in churches.
15:56Some of them are pastors.
15:58Some are workers in the church.
16:00But the good news is
16:01that all of us can be candidates
16:02for the victor's crown
16:03if we're willing to live a disciplined life
16:06and walk with Christ.
16:08Then there's the crown of rejoicing.
16:10The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 2, 19,
16:14for what is our hope or joy
16:17or crown of rejoicing?
16:19Is it not even you
16:20in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ
16:22that is coming?
16:23Paul's love for these Thessalonians
16:25is very emotional.
16:27Not even you are hope or joy
16:29or crown of rejoicing.
16:31This is an allusion to the wreath
16:33or the garland of victory
16:34awarded to winners in the games.
16:36And Paul's hope
16:37and his only grounds for boasting
16:40was the thought of the souls
16:42he would present to Christ.
16:43This crown is sometimes called
16:45the soul winner's crown.
16:47So if God has given you the ability
16:49to talk to people about your faith,
16:51win them to Christ,
16:52when you get to heaven,
16:53there's gonna be a special crown
16:55for soul winners.
16:56I know people who are so focused
16:59and motivated by winning people
17:00to Jesus Christ.
17:01That's all they live for.
17:03Every day they get up
17:04with that thought in their mind,
17:06how can I find someone
17:07and tell them about Jesus?
17:09Well, the Bible says
17:10for a person like that,
17:12they can win the crown of rejoicing.
17:15The third crown
17:16is the crown of righteousness.
17:18You will find that
17:19in 2 Timothy 4, 8.
17:22Finally, there is laid up for me
17:24the crown of righteousness,
17:26which the Lord, the righteous judge,
17:28will give to me on that day,
17:30and not to me only,
17:32but also to all
17:33who have loved his appearing.
17:34Paul said there's a special award
17:38that will be given
17:39at the judgment seat of Christ
17:40for people who look forward
17:42to the coming of Jesus Christ.
17:44Some people live
17:45with their hearts set on heaven.
17:48It's what motivates them every day
17:49when they get up.
17:50That's what they think about
17:51throughout the day.
17:52They're looking forward
17:53to seeing Christ,
17:54and those are the ones
17:55who will receive this crown
17:56because they love
17:58and they long for his appearing.
18:00So, there's the victor's crown,
18:03there's the crown of rejoicing,
18:04and there's the crown of righteousness.
18:07Number four,
18:08the fourth crown
18:09in the five crowns
18:10is the crown of life.
18:12Blessed is the man
18:13who endures temptation,
18:15for when he has been approved,
18:16he will receive
18:17the crown of life
18:18which the Lord has promised
18:20to those who love him.
18:22Revelation 2 says,
18:24do not fear any of those things
18:25which you are about to suffer.
18:27Indeed, the devil is about
18:28to throw some of you into prison
18:29that you may be tested
18:31and you will have tribulation
18:32ten days.
18:33Be faithful unto death
18:34and I will give you
18:35the crown of life.
18:37So, the crown of life
18:38is for people
18:39who pay a price
18:40for their faith.
18:41We haven't had too much
18:42of that in our culture.
18:44We've had some of it
18:45and every month
18:47it seems like
18:48it's a little bit more.
18:49The Bible says
18:50when you suffer for your faith,
18:52when you speak about the Lord
18:54and you get shunned
18:55or maybe you lose a promotion
18:57or maybe you even lose your job.
18:59The Bible says
19:00when you endure temptation
19:03and testing,
19:04you become a candidate
19:06for the crown of life.
19:09The people who don't like Christianity
19:11are vicious people
19:12and they don't care
19:13how much they hurt the Christians
19:15if they can just shut them up.
19:17The Bible says
19:18all who desire to live godly
19:20in Christ Jesus
19:21will suffer persecution.
19:23If you're a Christian,
19:25just get ready for the fact
19:26you're not going to be loved
19:27by everybody.
19:29Satan will batter you
19:30with temptations of all kinds
19:31but what a wonderful opportunity
19:33to lay claim
19:34to the crown of life.
19:37The crown of life
19:38is for those who suffer
19:39on behalf of Christ.
19:41And then the last one
19:42kind of special to me,
19:44the crown of glory.
19:45And when the chief shepherd appears,
19:47he will receive the crown of glory
19:49that does not fade away.
19:51This crown is for faithful shepherds
19:53of the people of God.
19:55Some have called this
19:55the pastor's crown.
19:57I might be in the running for this
19:59if I behave myself.
20:01And guess what?
20:03You don't have to be a pastor
20:04to make a difference.
20:06Maybe you lead a small group
20:07and you pastor a small group.
20:09You would be a shepherd
20:09in that regard.
20:11Maybe you teach a class
20:12and you shepherd the people
20:13in your class.
20:14You pray for them.
20:15You help them.
20:17That's a big deal.
20:17And the Bible says
20:18that people like that
20:20can receive a special reward
20:22in heaven.
20:23I hope you see
20:24that these crowns
20:25are for us today.
20:27And before we close our Bibles,
20:29just a couple of thoughts
20:31to leave in your head.
20:32Number one,
20:34with all of this stuff
20:34about crowns,
20:35just remember
20:36that the Lord himself
20:38is your chief reward.
20:40He is the one
20:41that you are rewarded by.
20:43Genesis 15, 1 says,
20:45after these things,
20:47the word of the Lord
20:47came to Abram
20:48in a vision saying,
20:50Do not be afraid, Abram.
20:51I am your shield,
20:53your exceedingly great reward.
20:56God is our great reward.
20:58Number two,
21:00resist doing works outwardly
21:02just for the purpose
21:03of receiving a reward.
21:06Take heed, says Matthew,
21:08that you do not do
21:09your charitable deeds
21:10before men
21:11to be seen by them.
21:12Otherwise,
21:13you have no reward
21:14from your Father in heaven.
21:15But when you do
21:16a charitable deed,
21:17do not let your left hand
21:18know what your right hand
21:19is doing,
21:20that your charitable deed
21:22may be in secret
21:22and your Father
21:23who sees in secret
21:25will reward you openly.
21:28One writer said,
21:29It might be possible
21:30to pursue eternal rewards
21:31with fleshly motives.
21:33But he said,
21:34I've never met anyone
21:35who was guilty of doing that.
21:38I've never heard someone say,
21:39I'm a missionary
21:40in the dark, deep jungle
21:42because when I get to heaven,
21:43I want a mansion
21:44that's bigger than the Joneses.
21:47Or I can't remember
21:49ever thinking
21:50if I witness to that guy,
21:52God will owe me big time.
21:54That's not the way it works.
21:57Number three,
21:58reflect upon the ultimate goal
22:00of any rewards
22:01you may receive.
22:02One last thought
22:03from the rewards section
22:05of the Bible.
22:06When we get all these crowns,
22:08what in the world
22:09are we going to do with them?
22:10Are we going to go through heaven
22:11wearing our crowns
22:12and, you know,
22:13I got this one.
22:14Which one did you get?
22:15No.
22:16The Bible says
22:17that something very special
22:19is going to happen.
22:20Listen to this.
22:21The 24 elders fall down
22:23before him
22:23who sits on the throne
22:24and worship him
22:25who lives forever and ever.
22:28And they cast their crowns
22:29before the throne,
22:31saying,
22:32You are worthy, O Lord,
22:33to receive glory
22:34and honor and power,
22:36for you created all things,
22:38and by your will
22:39they exist
22:40and were created.
22:43The Bible says
22:43that when we get our crowns
22:44in heaven,
22:45we're going to go to Jesus
22:46and cast them down
22:48before him
22:48as an act of worship.
22:50And you say,
22:51Well, I guess it won't make
22:51that much difference
22:52if I don't have one.
22:53And if that's all
22:53we're going to do with them,
22:55no, it'll make a big difference.
22:56Frankly, I don't want to be
22:57in the line of people
22:57with no crowns.
22:59I want to be in the line
23:00waiting to cast my crowns
23:01to the feet of Jesus.
23:03The Bible says
23:04that's what we're going to do
23:05with our crowns
23:05when we're giving them.
23:06We're going to give them
23:07to Jesus
23:08as an act of worship.
23:10There's an old story
23:11about a missionary couple
23:13that had been working
23:15in Africa for years,
23:16and they were returning
23:18to New York to retire.
23:21They had no pension.
23:22Their health was broken.
23:24They were defeated,
23:25discouraged, and afraid.
23:27They discovered
23:28they were booked
23:29on the same ship
23:30as President Teddy Roosevelt,
23:32who was returning
23:33from one of his big game
23:35hunting expeditions.
23:37No one paid attention
23:38to these missionaries.
23:40They watched the fanfare
23:42that accompanied
23:42the president's entourage
23:44with passengers trying
23:45to catch a glimpse
23:46of the great man.
23:48As the ship moved
23:49across the ocean,
23:50the old missionary
23:51said to his wife,
23:53something is wrong here.
23:55Why should we have given
23:56our lives in faithful service
23:57to God in Africa
23:58all these many years
24:00and have no one care
24:01a thing about us?
24:03Here's this man
24:04coming back from a hunting trip,
24:05and everybody makes
24:06so much over him,
24:07but nobody gives
24:08two hoots about us.
24:11Dear, you shouldn't feel
24:12that way, his wife said.
24:13I can't help it.
24:14It just doesn't seem right.
24:16When the ship docked
24:18in New York,
24:18a band was waiting
24:19to greet the president.
24:20The mayor and other dignitaries
24:22were there.
24:23The papers were full
24:24of the president's arrival,
24:26but no one noticed
24:27this missionary couple.
24:29They slipped off the ship
24:31and found a cheap flat
24:32on the east side,
24:34hoping the next day
24:35to see what they could do
24:36to make a living
24:37for the city.
24:38That night,
24:39the man's spirit broke.
24:41He said to his wife,
24:42I can't take this.
24:44God is not treating us fairly.
24:46Why don't you go to the bedroom
24:48and tell that to the Lord,
24:49said his wife,
24:50a smart woman.
24:52A short time later,
24:53he came out of the bedroom.
24:55Now his face
24:56was completely different.
24:58His wife said to him,
24:59Dear, what happened in there?
25:01Well, the Lord settled it with me.
25:03He said,
25:03I told him how bitter I was
25:05that the president
25:05should receive
25:06this tremendous homecoming
25:07when no one met us
25:09as we returned home.
25:10And when I finished,
25:12it seemed as though
25:12the Lord put his hand
25:13on my shoulder
25:14and he simply said,
25:16But you're not home yet.
25:19And that's the real secret,
25:20isn't it?
25:21We're not home yet.
25:22Some of you may feel like
25:24you're serving the Lord
25:25and nobody notices,
25:26but you're not home yet.
25:27When you get home,
25:29there will be one
25:29who will say to you,
25:30Well done,
25:32good and faithful servant.
