03:03What about the children?
03:04On the morning of November 10th, 2013,
03:10a youth pastor named Cameron Cole stumbled into what he later called
03:14the most magical conversation of my life.
03:18A lost Lego propelled Cameron and his three-year-old son Cam
03:22into a discussion that changed both of their lives forever.
03:27During that conversation, little Cam, a bright-eyed, curly-haired boy,
03:31told his father to get in the car so they could go see Jesus.
03:35His father explained that he wouldn't see Jesus
03:38until they were in heaven.
03:39And naturally, the little guy started asking questions about heaven.
03:43And the conversation ended with Cam professing his faith in Christ
03:47with childlike simplicity.
03:49That night, Cam mysteriously died.
03:54No medical reason was apparent for his death.
03:56The doctors listed it as sudden, unexplained death in childhood.
04:01For Cam's parents, Cameron and Lauren,
04:04this was the start of a journey into their worst nightmare,
04:08their descent into a dark, sad valley.
04:14Cameron later wrote in the book that he wrote called Heavenward,
04:19he said,
04:19Amidst the sorrow and grief of my child's death,
04:23something radically new happened in my daily mindset.
04:27Heaven became an almost present part of my perspective.
04:31This transformation made sense.
04:33This is where my firstborn child now lived.
04:36As the sorrow of grief subsided,
04:38he continued heavenwardness provided richer fellowship with Jesus.
04:42I had more perspective and hope.
04:45I had more comfort and more patience.
04:48Though I was suffering deeply from the loss of my son,
04:52God was blessing my inner life in a unique way.
04:58One of the most frequent asked questions that I get about heaven
05:03is also one of the hardest.
05:05What happens to children who pass away?
05:09It's not a new issue.
05:11Both the nation of Israel in the Old Testament
05:13and the gospel story in the New Testament
05:15open on that particular note.
05:18The story of the Exodus begins when Pharaoh orders
05:22the deaths of all baby boys among Hebrew slaves in Egypt.
05:26And the gospel of Matthew begins with King Herod
05:29sending his soldiers to kill the baby boys in Bethlehem
05:32in an attempt to destroy the little one
05:35whom the Magi called the king of the Jews.
05:38The death of children has been one of the world's greatest sorrows
05:43throughout history, both biblical and secular,
05:46and in the personal histories of millions,
05:48including probably some of you here today.
05:52Others have grieved miscarriages or stillbirths.
05:57Untold millions of pre-born children
05:59have been lost through abortion.
06:01Some children have been slain in wars
06:03or horrendous acts of violence.
06:05As a lifelong pastor, I've stood beside small caskets
06:11trying to comfort others when my own heart
06:13was broken over the scene before me.
06:16But I praise the Lord because through the tears
06:19there's a sunbeam of hope.
06:21Scripture gives us reasons to trust
06:24that infants and young children are not lost forever.
06:28Instead, they are given the gift of bypassing
06:31the sorrows of this world
06:32and are instantly transported to heaven
06:35where we'll meet them
06:36and enjoy their fellowship throughout eternity.
06:39So, what exactly does the Bible say
06:41about this incredible hope?
06:43I'm going to give you several truths
06:45that I think will help.
06:46First of all, let's talk for a moment
06:49about the compassion of Jesus.
06:51When you read the stories of Jesus in the Gospels,
06:54we discovered that our Lord
06:56had an incredible love for children.
06:58And he demonstrated that love on many occasions.
07:01One example is so important
07:03that it is recorded by three of the Gospel writers,
07:06Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
07:08Here's Matthew's account.
07:10Then little children were brought to him
07:11that he might put his hands on them and pray.
07:15But the disciples rebuked them.
07:17But Jesus said,
07:18Let the little children come to me
07:19and do not forbid them,
07:21for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
07:24We also have a wonderful passage in Matthew's Gospel
07:28that is as definitive as any verse in the Bible
07:31on the eternal love that Jesus has for children.
07:34Here it is.
07:35Matthew 18, 14.
07:37Even so, it is not the will of your Father
07:40who is in heaven
07:41that one of these little ones should perish.
07:45Have you ever read that verse?
07:47There you have the strong, unambiguous statement
07:49of the Savior.
07:51He's not willing that one of these little ones
07:55should perish.
07:56If that's all I had,
07:57if I didn't have anything else to tell you to do,
07:59that would be enough.
08:00And I could build my hope on all of this
08:02just on that one verse.
08:04The Lord Jesus has compassion
08:06for little children and infants,
08:08and he is not willing
08:09that even one of them should perish.
08:12What about babies that are never born
08:14because of miscarriages or abortions?
08:17Here we must be very clear.
08:19I believe, as do all who accept the authority of God's Word,
08:24that a child is a person from the moment of conception.
08:28Since that is true,
08:30all pre-born babies who perish,
08:32whether through miscarriage, abortion,
08:34or tragic accidents,
08:36go straight to heaven.
08:38If you had an abortion,
08:39I want to tell you that God knows
08:41how to pour his forgiveness and healing into your life
08:44through the merits of Christ.
08:45Abortion is not the unpardonable sin.
08:49God not only forgives you,
08:51he goes far beyond that.
08:52Because of his mercy,
08:54that little one, now lost,
08:56will be waiting for you in heaven,
08:57and you will enjoy an eternity of loving fellowship
09:00with that precious child.
09:02Jesus loves you,
09:03and he loves every child from conception.
09:06In fact, he loves us,
09:08the Bible says,
09:09from before time ever began.
09:11So, that's the compassion of Jesus.
09:14Let me talk to you for a moment
09:16about the character of the Father.
09:18The Bible is full of information
09:20about the nature of God,
09:21his personality,
09:23and his attributes.
09:25Scripture calls him Father.
09:27And that ought to tell you something.
09:28I always love to remind people of that on Father's Day,
09:31and I like to repeat what Jesus heard from his Father
09:35when the Father said,
09:36this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.
09:38We should repeat that as often as we can to our children,
09:42any way we know how.
09:44He isn't simply a distant force in the universe.
09:47He is, as Jesus put it,
09:49our Father in heaven.
09:52There's a passage describing God's fathering love
09:55in the book of Deuteronomy.
09:58Deuteronomy 1, 29 to 31.
10:00Do not be terrified or afraid of them.
10:03The Lord your God who goes before you,
10:05he will fight for you
10:06according to all he did for you in Egypt
10:09before your eyes
10:10and in the wilderness
10:11where you saw how the Lord your God carried you
10:15as a man carries his son
10:17in all the way that you went
10:19until you came to this place.
10:21Isn't that a great picture?
10:22The Lord God carries us
10:24like a father carries his son
10:26because God is full of compassion.
10:28He's full of tenderness and mercy,
10:30and he just carries us through the tough patches
10:33like a father carrying his son.
10:35This is a consistent theme,
10:37especially in the Psalms.
10:39Psalm 86, 15, for instance, says,
10:42But you, O Lord, are a God full of compassion
10:45and gracious, long-suffering,
10:47and abundant in mercy and truth.
10:50Psalm 145, verse 9 says,
10:52The Lord is good to all,
10:54and his tender mercies are over all his works.
10:57So, let me say this out loud today
10:59in front of all of you
11:00and all who are watching and listening.
11:02God is a good God.
11:06He is good.
11:08He is good to all,
11:09and he certainly is good to children.
11:12He knows that little children
11:14cannot comprehend the truth of the gospel,
11:17yet God loves them deeply.
11:18He loves the preborn and the newborn.
11:20He loves the infant and the toddler.
11:23The word children appears nearly 100 times
11:26just in the gospels alone.
11:29The Bible teaches that God knows children.
11:32He loves children with special, tender care.
11:34Our Heavenly Father, in his justice,
11:37provides for children
11:38who are not old enough to comprehend the gospel.
11:41In fact, Ezekiel tells us
11:43that Almighty God considers all children his children.
11:47Moreover, you took your sons and your daughters,
11:49whom you bore to me,
11:51and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured.
11:54No, my friends, the character of God
11:56provides a special grace
11:57for those who cannot believe.
12:00On a number of occasions,
12:01God refers to these little ones as innocents.
12:05I-N-N-O-C-E-N-T-S, innocents.
12:10Jeremiah 2.34,
12:12also on your skirts is found
12:13the blood of the lives of the poor innocents.
12:17Jeremiah 19.4,
12:19Although they are sinful creatures just like all of us,
12:28they are not responsible in the same way
12:30as those sins which are committed
12:33in a willful and premeditated way,
12:35because God understands the difference.
12:38The character of God lays the foundation
12:40for the realization that children
12:42who cannot understand the gospel
12:44are enveloped within the grace and mercy of the Lord.
12:47And on them, God has a tender heart.
12:51On them, his compassion reigns.
12:54So, reason number one is the compassion of Jesus.
12:58And reason number two is the character of the Father.
13:02And reason number three is the condition of death.
13:05There's another observation we can make
13:07based on the story of a 12-year-old child
13:10mentioned in the Gospels.
13:12She's known as the daughter of Jairus.
13:14This little girl had died,
13:17and her family and friends were inconsolable.
13:20So, Jesus visited the home
13:22and heard mourners wailing loudly,
13:24and he told them,
13:25Do not weep.
13:26She is not dead, but she is sleeping.
13:30They jeered him,
13:31but he took the parents to the room
13:33where the girl's body was residing.
13:35He took her hand, and he said,
13:36Little girl, arise.
13:39Her spirit returned.
13:40She rose at once,
13:41and Jesus told them to give her something to eat.
13:44Those words of Jesus,
13:46She is not dead.
13:47She is sleeping.
13:49They weren't just spoken to Jairus.
13:51They are for every mom and dad or grandparent
13:54who has ever lost a little one.
13:57The miscarried child,
13:59the stillborn baby,
14:00the aborted infant,
14:01the child who dies of SIDS
14:03or perished in a car accident
14:05or in a natural disaster,
14:07they're not dead.
14:07They're just sleeping.
14:10This is biblical terminology.
14:13When we die in Christ,
14:14our spirits go at once to be with the Lord,
14:16and our bodies go to sleep
14:18until awakened and glorified at the rapture.
14:22The daughter of Jairus is a prototype
14:24of every child who dies,
14:26who falls asleep in Jesus,
14:28and whom the Lord will raise up
14:30with resurrection glory.
14:33So you have the compassion of Jesus,
14:35the character of the Father,
14:37the condition of death.
14:39But my favorite reason,
14:40because I think it's the most powerful,
14:41is what I have called the confidence of David.
14:46There is a story in the life of King David
14:48that is fundamental to the question
14:50we're answering today.
14:52If you had your Bibles,
14:54I'd have you turn to 2 Samuel chapter 12.
14:57This section of Scripture records the events
15:00that happened in the life of David
15:02immediately after he was confronted
15:04by the prophet Nathan.
15:05As you will remember,
15:07Nathan was appointed by God
15:09to go and confront David
15:10because of his adultery with Bathsheba
15:12and the murder of her husband,
15:14Uriah the Hittite.
15:16Among other things,
15:18Nathan told David
15:19that the child that he and Bathsheba
15:21had brought into the world
15:23would be taken away in death.
15:25So we pick up this story
15:27from 2 Samuel chapter 12, verse 14,
15:31and I'm going to read it right from the Bible.
15:33Here we go.
15:34However, because by this deed
15:36you have given great occasion
15:37to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme,
15:40the child also who is born to you
15:43will surely die.
15:45And Nathan departed to his house.
15:48And the Lord struck the child
15:50that Uriah's wife bore to David,
15:52and it became ill.
15:53And David therefore pleaded with God for the child.
15:56And he fasted, and he went in
15:58and lay all night on the ground.
16:01So the elders of his house arose
16:03and went to him to raise him up from the ground,
16:05but he would not,
16:06nor did he eat food with them.
16:07And on the seventh day it came to pass
16:09that the child died.
16:12And the servants of David were afraid
16:13to tell him that the child was dead,
16:15for they said,
16:16while the child was alive,
16:18we spoke to him.
16:18He wouldn't even heed our voice.
16:20How can we tell him that the child is dead?
16:22He may do some harm.
16:25When David saw that his servants were whispering,
16:27he perceived that the child was dead.
16:29Therefore he said to his servants,
16:31is the child dead?
16:33And they said, he is dead.
16:36So David rose from the ground,
16:39washed and anointed himself,
16:40and changed his clothes,
16:42and he went into the house of the Lord
16:44and worshiped.
16:46Then he went to his own house,
16:48and when he requested,
16:50they set food before him,
16:52and he ate.
16:53And I want to put in here my own translation,
16:56and it freaked his servants out.
16:59I mean, then his servants said to him,
17:01what is this that you have done?
17:04You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive,
17:07and when the child died,
17:08you arose and he ate food.
17:11And he said,
17:12while the child was alive,
17:15I fasted and wept,
17:16for I said,
17:17who can tell whether the Lord will be gracious to me
17:19that the child may live?
17:22But now he is dead.
17:24Why should I fast?
17:26Here's the key phrase.
17:28Can I bring him back again?
17:30I shall go to him,
17:32but he shall not return to me.
17:35That last sentence in that passage
17:38in 2 Samuel 12, 23,
17:40is arguably the greatest sentence in the Bible
17:43on the subject of what happens to a child
17:45when they die or when the rapture happens.
17:50It was this thought of a reunion with his dead child
17:53which cheered David.
17:55But where did he think the reunion would be?
17:57In the grave?
17:58In hell?
17:59In heaven?
18:00He believed that he himself would go to heaven after death
18:04and consequently meant to express the belief
18:07that his child had but gone on before him
18:10to that blessed place.
18:12The idea of meeting his child in the unconscious grave
18:15could not have rationally comforted him at all.
18:19Nor could the thought of meeting him in hell
18:21have cheered his spirit.
18:23But the thought of meeting his child in heaven
18:25had in itself the power of turning his weeping into joy.
18:31David knew what I've been trying to tell you
18:33throughout this message.
18:35When little ones die or the rapture happens
18:37before they understand the gospel,
18:40they go straight to heaven.
18:43Now, I know I haven't answered all the questions.
18:46In fact, I am pretty sure I've created some new ones
18:49you never had before you came to this session.
18:52So let me grab hold of a couple of them
18:54that have come to me as I have preached this message.
18:58One of them is,
18:59what about the age of accountability?
19:02Are little children innocent until they reach a certain age?
19:05In our attempt to bring comfort to those who mourn,
19:08we must not deny the truth of God's Word.
19:11No one is truly innocent.
19:13Jesus' statements about children being innocent
19:16does not mean they are without sin.
19:18It means that they were not responsible for their sin.
19:21The Bible teaches that all of us are sinners.
19:24And from the very beginning, Psalm 51, 5,
19:27Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
19:30and in sin my mother conceived me.
19:32Or Psalm 58, 3,
19:34The wicked are estranged from the womb.
19:36They go astray as soon as they are born,
19:39speaking lies.
19:41No, innocence doesn't mean sinless.
19:45There are no sinless people.
19:49All of us are born with a sin nature,
19:51even though we have not yet done anything wrong.
19:53Our nature is sinful.
19:56Every baby needs a Savior, just like every adult does.
19:59But at what age does a child become responsible
20:03for his relationship with God?
20:05Is there an age of accountability?
20:08Isaiah refers to such a time in the life of a child.
20:12He says,
20:12For before the child shall know to refuse the evil
20:15and choose the good.
20:17The important thing to remember here
20:18is that the Bible does not make any reference
20:21to a particular age of accountability.
20:23But there is a time in the life of every child
20:27when they are able to understand God's love
20:30and when they comprehend what it means to be a sinner.
20:34For some children, that knowledge comes at a very early age.
20:37For others, it may take more time
20:39because the age of accountability
20:41is not a chronological measurement.
20:44It's a reckoning of spiritual understanding.
20:47How old is this child when he comprehends the gospel?
20:50And that would be different, perhaps, for every child.
20:54So, someone answered that question,
20:56and then somebody says,
20:57Okay, Jeremiah,
20:58how old are children going to be in heaven?
21:02Well, there are differing views about that question,
21:05and there's no absolute answer in Scripture.
21:08Some people believe that when we are in heaven,
21:10we will all be mature in body, mind, and spirit.
21:13The thought is this.
21:14If babies cannot fully enjoy this life,
21:16how could we expect them to fully enjoy eternal life with God?
21:21One proponent of this view argues
21:23that the book of Revelation describes worship in heaven
21:26as involving every single person.
21:29Therefore, whoever is in heaven will have to be of such an age
21:32as to be able to participate in the eternal worship of Almighty God.
21:36Alistair McGrath supports this view.
21:38He says,
21:39As each person reaches their peak of perfection around the age of 30,
21:43they will be resurrected as they would have appeared at that time,
21:46even if they had never lived to reach that age.
21:49The new Jerusalem will thus be populated by men and women
21:52as they would appear at the age of 30,
21:55but with every blemish removed.
21:57Now, that's one idea.
21:59Some have increased the age to 33
22:01because that's how low Christ was when he was crucified.
22:05Others hold that children will be allowed to grow up in heaven.
22:09In support of this view is the reference to the condition in the millennium.
22:13If the millennium is the prelude to heaven,
22:16then there must be children in heaven.
22:18For Isaiah describes this period of the millennium like this,
22:22And a little child shall lead them,
22:25and the nursing child shall play by the cobra's hole,
22:28and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den.
22:34You know, if I have to put my emphasis on one or another,
22:38I believe there'll be children in heaven.
22:40I don't know all the answers to how that works out.
22:43There will not be any procreation in heaven.
22:46Children won't be born in heaven,
22:47but children in heaven will mature.
22:50J. Vernon McGee, who's one of my old friends who's in heaven now,
22:54he said,
22:55I believe with all my heart that God will raise the little ones such
23:00that the mother's arms who have ached for them
23:02will have the opportunity of holding them.
23:05The father's hand, which never held the little hand,
23:08will be given the privilege.
23:09I believe that little ones will grow up in heaven
23:12in the care of their earthly parents if they are saved.
23:16On the basis of the compassion of Jesus,
23:20the character of God,
23:22the condition of death, and the confidence of David,
23:25I can say with authority
23:27that the unborn and little children, when they die,
23:31go straight into the arms of Jesus in heaven.
23:36Remember Cameron Cole,
23:38who I told you about at the beginning of the message?
23:41He said this in regard to his son's passing.
23:44I have often thought that Cam and I
23:47are both hugging the same massive oak tree.
23:52He stands on one side, and I stand on the other.
23:55The girth of the tree is so big that we cannot see each other.
24:00Nevertheless, we grip the oak tree with the same joy, affection, and pleasure.
24:06In reality, he said,
24:08the oak tree is Jesus.
24:10Cameron went on to say,
24:15I miss him, and I yearn to be with him.
24:17My heart and mind naturally turn upward.
24:20My son's life and glory has put my heart and mind on a heavenly swivel.
24:25So, if you've lost a little one,
24:28let your heart and mind turn upward.
24:31Put your head on a heavenly swivel.
24:34Let the soon-approaching joys of your coming reunion
24:37lift your mind to Jesus,
24:39who never saw a child he didn't love enough to die for.
24:44They are all safe and happy in his heavenly home,
24:48and to that we can all say hallelujah.

25:52The promise of heaven is a great comfort to us
25:55as we go through this life.
25:58But the fact is, there is only one way to gain entrance.
26:03We can't get to heaven by being nice people.
26:06We can't get there by doing more good than bad.
26:09We can't get there by rites or rituals.
26:13You see, the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ
26:16and accepting Him as Lord and Savior of your life.
