Parsons to the Packers! Do you believe the Patriots were interested in the superstar?
Should the Pats have dealt 2-firsts and a player for Micah? Wiggy: "All day long!"
Transcript
00:00I am sitting here and I'm still asking myself 12 hours later, 14 hours later,
00:06whether or not it would have been at least remotely possible for the New England Patriots
00:12to offer some kind of a morsel or two to the Dallas Cowboys for Micah Parsons.
00:20Like some kind of a, could you maybe throw in one of RKK's, Bentleys or something,
00:28something that would intrigue Jerry Jones when the very best defensive player in the game of football
00:36is somehow available.
00:39Two first round picks all day long and a defensive tackle.
00:43I would have did two first rounds and I would have gave him a bomb one.
00:46I would have even thrown in an extra fourth if you needed to get the deal done.
00:51Yep, it wouldn't have mattered to me.
00:52And I would have gave him that deal.
00:54You know, that deal is a, it's a, it's obviously, it's a great deal.
00:57And then it's, I know it's four years, 188, but it's 136 million guaranteed.
01:03So it's basically three years and then he'll sign another extension after that.
01:08I would have been all, like you said, Greg, for one of the best young defensive players
01:13in the National Football League.
01:15I mean, what are you doing here?
01:16It makes no sense to me though, because Jerry Jones kind of looks,
01:19and I understanding we're going to get to it during, they said it this morning,
01:22that Jerry Jones is, you know, happy about this deal.
01:24But we thought that Micah Parsons was going to go for more than just two first round picks
01:28and a defensive guy, right?
01:30Well, you, you, you actually thought that he wasn't going anywhere.
01:33Well, at first I said on the show, I did a lead first.
01:36That was that the Patriots should jump on him.
01:38And then it seemed like Jerry Jones wasn't worried about it.
01:41Dak Prescott wasn't worried about it.
01:42So yeah, I thought he was staying in Dallas.
01:44Yeah.
01:44I mean, two first round picks.
01:45So that's, for that caliber of player, that's right on par.
01:49If he's a quarterback, maybe.
01:51Who was the quarterback that got traded and he got, they had to give up three first round picks
01:55just recently, Shime, a few years ago?
01:58Wasn't there a quarterback that was just traded?
02:00Wasn't that the Deshaun Watson?
02:01Yeah, yeah.
02:01It might've been Deshaun Watson.
02:03So for Micah Parsons.
02:03The Russell Wilson trade is also a big one.
02:05Yeah, but.
02:06There's been a few of them.
02:06But I think it was Deshaun Watson.
02:07So for Micah Parsons, two first round picks and a defensive player, I'm on that all day long.
02:13I look at it, Wiggy, as Jalen Ramsey got traded for two first round picks and a fourth.
02:18Right.
02:18And Micah Parsons, I'm sorry, Jalen Ramsey, is way better than Jalen Ramsey was.
02:24I mean, there's no question about the fact that he is the very best defensive player in
02:29the National Football League.
02:30So I don't know how you're not in on it.
02:33And I get it.
02:34I'm sure later on today, Elliott Wolfe or whoever speaks for the organization will suggest
02:40to Tommy Curran and Tommy Curran will report that they were right there and talking about
02:45it.
02:45But if you're Elliott Wolfe and you're in front of the microphones a week ago and you're
02:51talking about how you're happy to give up a first round pick if the player is worth,
03:00if the value of the player is worth the pick and you're not in on giving up that first round
03:05pick on this particular player, then it's Cap, as Wiggy would say.
03:10And who are we blaming today?
03:13Well, you know who's getting the blame.
03:16It's the ball guy.
03:17Yep.
03:18It's Wolfe.
03:19It is Wolfe.
03:20Wolfe's the one who's going to get the blame.
03:22Mike Vrabel, I'm sure, was sitting there with his hands up going, hey, I would have looked
03:25I would have loved to try to get Mike Vrabel.
03:28Elliott's Wolfe decision.
03:29That's right.
03:30It is.
03:31I mean, think about it, right?
03:32It absolutely is.
03:32We're not really criticizing Kraft.
03:34Nope.
03:34We're not criticizing Vrabel.
03:36It's all about Elliott Wolfe right now.
03:39And, you know, but everybody tells me he has no power.
03:42He's just the moat piece.
03:43Yeah.
03:43I don't.
03:44I mean, I mean, I maybe the may, I guess maybe the money is an issue.
03:49It seems like the money appears to be a part of the decision when it came to Kendrick Bourne.
03:57I mean, I could catch that stuff yesterday.
03:59Sean, didn't I bring that up yesterday morning during your lead?
04:03And it was poo-pooed in there, I think.
04:06So they went to Kendrick Bourne and asked them to take a pay cut.
04:12Yes.
04:12Now, that's a pay cut on, I think that deal was maybe $5 million guaranteed max to start.
04:24And so I don't know how much of that $5 million he had eaten through, but it could not have been,
04:32it could not have been more than $2.5 million or whatever.
04:35No, it said he had a three-year $19 million contract.
04:39With five guaranteed.
04:40Yeah, the last year of his deal was $5.5 million guaranteed.
04:44So they went to him and they wanted him to take a pay cut.
04:49They have more cap room.
04:52Wow.
04:53They have nearly $60 million in cap cash.
04:57And they're running around asking somebody if they're willing to use a group on.
05:03And they're asking a guy that they know isn't going to play.
05:06So they're basically going to a guy who's like, wait a second, why would I take a pay cut when I'm not going to play?
05:12You just, wow.
05:13So I don't know, maybe not being in on Micah Parsons has way more to do with what you're going to have to pay him over three or four years.
05:22So what, you have a quarterback on a rookie contract.
05:24By the time the Micah Parsons contract is up, that's when you pay your young quarterback.
05:29Like, it makes perfect sense.
05:31It is the perfect opportunity to spend out the wazoo on the best defensive player in football.
05:37There are no excuses.
05:39And you could do it all the time.
05:40You could pay those guys.
05:42I know you've got to pay Christian Gonzalez.
05:44But look at these teams.
05:45Cincinnati paid Joe Burrow.
05:47They paid Jamar Chase.
05:49They paid Tee Higgins.
05:50When the Rams won a Super Bowl, they paid Aaron Donald.
05:53Look at the Eagles.
05:54They paid Jalen Hurts.
05:55They're going to pay Jalen Carter.
05:58They paid Saquon Barkley.
05:59They paid A.J. Brown.
06:00Right.
06:01I don't get why you're like, oh, you could have, you could have had Christian Gonzalez and Micah Parsons basically being your foundation for your defense for the next seven, eight years.
06:14Now, reasonable question from a listener on the Subaru of New England text line.
06:22I don't know nearly as much football as this show, except I know more than shine.
06:28Well, I added that part.
06:29But with all the holes at wide receiver and O-line, why would you ever trade first round picks?
06:40And so your answer?
06:42Well, I would trade first round picks because you're getting a two-time all pro, a four-time pro bowler, and he's 26 years old, and he's an absolute disruptor on defense.
06:55So if your offense isn't going to be as good or it's going to be an offense that's maybe run, kind of a short passing game, why not have your defense be one of the best defenses in the league with a young quarterback that, you know, can use his legs and his athletic ability to make plays?
07:13But your defense can give teams nightmares, create turnovers, and then, you know, you can always get a guy in free agency.
07:21You can, and especially when it comes to, and it probably should be the way you go about doing business with the O-line.
07:29Like, you know, I...
07:30You've also drafted, like, dog water for, like, five straight years.
07:34Who cares about your first round picks?
07:36Get Micah Parsons!
07:38I also don't think that Mike Vrabel would want Micah Parsons after how he answered, I believe, Wiggy's question on Monday, because he said he wants players that can help this roster right now.
07:48Yes, Micah Parsons would make this roster better, but he probably, in his mind, thinks that defensively, this team is okay.
07:54We're good to go right now.
07:55But the way in which he answered your question, you brought up specific players, not by name, but you described them, he basically poo-pooed it.
08:08Are you talking about when I asked about disgruntled players?
08:11No, I'm talking about when Wiggy asked about specific players.
08:14He said, I know we can't talk about these specific players, but you've got one guy that can come after the quarterback constantly.
08:19You've got one guy who has great hands, and you should be going after those players.
08:23And he said, I hear what you're saying, I mean, I'm not going to give an exact quote, I hear what you're saying, but I want to go for specific players that can help out this specific team.
08:30I don't know if it's them.
08:31Well, oh yeah, I would have to listen to that again.
08:36There's no way that Mike Vrabel doesn't think that Micah Parsons is going to improve this team in a massive way right now.
08:44There's no way he wouldn't want Micah Parsons.
08:45I think that he thinks that the defense is good right now, so let's focus on other positions that are not, and that we need help at.
08:50Here's what he said.
08:51He goes, we're always looking to try to improve the team, whether it's from within or it's from without.
08:58And then he went on to say about those specific guys, I thought it was an interesting response to what you were saying.
09:06I mean, I would think Mike Vrabel would know better than anybody because he played a similar position, and he knows what that guy can do.
09:14We won a Super Bowl, and he won three Super Bowls because of having a great defense and having guys that were really good on defense, whether it was Seymour, whether it was himself, whether it was Willie McGinnis.
09:29So he understands what a guy like that can do for your defense and the rest of your team.
09:34This is Jim from Weymouth.
09:36Hello, Jim.
09:38Good morning, everyone.
09:40Happy Friday.
09:41Happy Friday.
09:42What's up?
09:44Happy Friday.
09:45Why are you letting Robert Kraft off the hook on this?
09:47We're not.
09:48I heard you guys blaming, exclusively blaming Elliott Wolfe.
09:51No.
09:52Have you?
09:52Curtis had it.
09:54Curtis had it with a lack of spending over the last several years.
09:57Yeah, go ahead.
09:58How often do you get to listen to the show a lot?
10:02Every day.
10:03Okay.
10:03We've spent a lot of time talking about the fact that Elliott Wolfe, from our perspective, has zero say in what's going on, and he is going to be used by Robert Kraft and maybe even Mike Vrabel as the fall guy when and if they need a fall guy.
10:21So you may have missed that discussion, but there's one guy, one guy only, who signs the checks over there, and that is the man that they affectionately call RKK.
10:33Right.
10:34You're making my point.
10:36No, no, no.
10:37Earlier you mentioned Elliott Wolfe, and I didn't hear Robert Kraft's name mentioned.
10:46This was like 10 minutes ago.
10:47Okay.
10:48You're missing the focus of what I'm trying to explain to you.
10:53The main point we said.
10:54We're happy to have the Hillman down at Patriot Place.
10:57You've been with us since the beginning.
10:58When we said, guess who they're going to blame, and guess who's going to get off scot-free.
11:04Right?
11:05I think he missed that part of it.
11:06We were all like, well, how do you blame Elliott Wolfe, a guy where no one believes he has that much power, when we know it's Kraft and we know it's Vrabel.
11:17But yet, the only guy that we're talking about is Elliott Wolfe.
11:21This is Rich from Western Massachusetts.
11:25Hello, Rich.
11:27Hey, I don't think the previous caller actually listens when he listens to the show.
11:31I think you talked about this yesterday.
11:32We were talking about it yesterday extensively.
11:35I'm going to give him the – sometimes we speak in – we don't speak in tongues.
11:42Well, maybe Wiggy does.
11:43But sometimes we are being sarcastic.
11:47Right.
11:47And we assume that everybody is getting it.
11:49Right.
11:50So I don't want to say anything bad about the guy.
11:54But, yes, we have discussed countless times of late that this team sits with nearly $59 million in available salary cap.
12:05And it appears that Robert Kraft doesn't want to spend it.
12:09And so I don't know how to be any clearer when it comes to that being my perspective on it this morning.
12:16So, go ahead.
12:19Yes.
12:19What else, though?
12:20Yeah, Robert Kraft hasn't spent in about 20 years anyway.
12:24But, I mean, you still have – right?
12:26Giving up a first-round draft pick for maybe two years, that's fine because we're going to be middle of the road anyway.
12:32Draft in 16th, 17th by what we're predicting them to how many wins they're going to get this year.
12:38They don't need a quarterback.
12:40Normally quarterbacks go first, second, third.
12:42We don't need a quarterback.
12:43He's on his rookie contract for the – I don't know, for what, for the next two years?
12:47Yeah.
12:48And we couldn't even get Chris Godwin here and give him like an extra $5 million.
12:54So, you bring in – you bring in Micah Parsons, right?
12:57You improve your defense even more.
12:59They just said they wanted to improve the team.
13:02Maybe they say, all right, Micah Parsons comes here.
13:04We spend a little bit of money.
13:06They have a – they finish 9-8.
13:08They have a great season.
13:10And maybe other players are saying, hey, Patriots have a new head coach.
13:13They just got Micah Parsons.
13:15Drake May had a great second year.
13:17Maybe New England will be a desirable spot to land if Robert Kraft can just shell out a little bit of money.
13:23There are people – you start maybe being able to talk about some kind of a vibe going on.
13:30And it's a place that high-profile superstar players want to go to.
13:35Right.
13:35And you know what's going to happen every year?
13:37You're going to get disgruntled players who want out of their organization.
13:41So if you get Micah Parsons, what you do is you're building your defense, and then the call is right.
13:47You probably win 10 games.
13:49You know, Curtis got him winning 10 without him.
13:51But, you know, now you're a team that is like, all right, Micah Parsons, lock him in at least 9.
13:56Then you get a disgruntled guy next year, wide receiver, who wants out.
14:02And now you go, wait, we got Micah Parsons.
14:04We still got Drake May on his rookie deal.
14:06We're going to give Christian Gonzalez money.
14:09Let's trade for whatever disgruntled wide receiver that is for next year.
14:14Speaking of disgruntled, we talked about it a little bit yesterday.
14:18But Christian Gonzalez has to be in the middle of some kind of a silent hold-in.
14:25Why?
14:26He hasn't practiced for over a month.
14:30Yeah, he's hurt.
14:32Shime, we're a week away from the opener.
14:35He hasn't – yeah, I guarantee – I don't guarantee anything.
14:39I question what is going on over there with that player.
14:43It's a hammy, though.
14:44That takes a while to –
14:46I question what is going on with that player.
14:48I would suggest that that is an absolute nothing.
14:51Yeah, because he's got one more year.
14:53After this year is when he starts to get into that hold-in territory.
14:57Here is Cotto from Boston.
15:00What's up, Cotto?
15:01Good morning.
15:02What's up?
15:03Happy Friday.
15:03Same to you, yes.
15:06I got an emergency top three weasels in football right now that I need to get off my chest.
15:11Okay, good.
15:12Number three.
15:13Weasel number one.
15:16Oh, three.
15:16All right.
15:17So, three.
15:17We're going Elliot Wolfe.
15:19Yeah.
15:19And that's their obvious reason.
15:21Okay.
15:23Dylan Raiola.
15:25The Patrick Mahomes kid.
15:28From Nebraska.
15:29Dude, that kid is such a weasel.
15:32Number one.
15:34Hey, Jones.
15:36Who?
15:38Jerry Jones.
15:39Jerry Jones.
15:39He's up there acting like – yeah, acting like what he did was good.
15:42He was backing himself up like, dude, you're a dingbat.
15:46Yeah.
15:47I don't know what he's thinking about on that one.
15:49We will – Courtney mentioned it.
15:50Oh, let's go.
15:50He's out there.
15:51Seven.
15:52Joe.
15:52That kid would – I don't know what he has to do.
15:53I don't know what he has to do.
15:55Just go.
15:55I don't know.
15:56I love it.
15:56I take this.
15:57I love it.
15:58I love it.
16:00We'll be all skill sentido.
16:05Don't maybe.
16:06Bye.
16:06I hate it.
16:07Bye.
16:08Bye.
16:08Bye two.
16:08Bye.
16:09Bye.
16:09Bye.
16:10Bye.
16:10Bye.
16:11Bye.
16:11Bye.
16:12Bye.
16:12Bye.
16:13Bye.
16:13Bye.
16:14Bye.
16:14Bye.
16:15Bye.
16:16Bye.
16:17Bye.
16:17Bye.
16:17Bye.
16:18Bye.
16:19Bye.
