You may have heard meteorologists forecasting hurricanes mention places like the Leeward Islands or the Bay of Campeche, but do you know where those are?

00:00Well, it's time for a little hurricane season geography lesson because overall this area highlighted in this black box is where we typically see tropical waves coming off the coast of Africa develop into a named storm. But we might be talking about some geographic regions that you're not familiar with or you need a little reminder. Now, first of all, we're going to start right off the coast of Africa. We have the Cabo Verde Islands, which is actually where what became Hurricane Aaron developed into a named storm. What you're seeing on the right hand side of your screen are the hurricane hunters flying through the eye of
00:29Hurricane Aaron once it was a hurricane farther west in the Atlantic. We are going to follow suit and head a little bit further west in the Atlantic now to the Caribbean. Now, you've probably heard of the greater and the lesser Antilles, but if you don't really remember where's the cutoff? Well, it's right around Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. But you can also remember greater Antilles, the larger islands, smaller islands, lesser Antilles. But we zoom into the lesser Antilles. We have two more regions to talk about the leeward and the windward islands.
00:59Now, generally speaking, looking at the trade winds, they're coming from the east northeast for both of these kind of sets of islands. And generally speaking, farther to the south, the winds can be a little bit stronger, though. There's not a great meteorological reason why these are the leeward islands and these are the windward islands. It's something that was just decided hundreds of years ago. And it's the names that we're still using. Now, coming a little closer to home, we're looking at the Gulf and we talk about homegrown development in the Gulf a lot.
01:29Caribbean. Sometimes it moves into the southern part of the Gulf, which has a different name. If you've heard us talk about the Bay of Campeche, here is where it is. But you can just remember, it's the southern part of the Gulf, right by Mexico, right by Central America. And it's one of the many areas that we look at for development or a storm that is already developed that we're now tracking for U.S. impacts.
01:52So, let's see.
