00:00Well, it's getting to be the time of year where we're going to be seeing more and more scenes like this.
00:05The heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, things that we often associate with hurricane season,
00:10which, yes, it's been hurricane season since June, but really, it's three seasons in one.
00:15Let's take a look at how it all breaks down.
00:17We have the early and late season development, June through mid-July.
00:21That's the early season development.
00:22We've been in the mid-season lull, really, but now we're entering into the final stage,
00:28the heart of hurricane season, when things are going to start to pick up.
00:32So anyone who lives really anywhere in the U.S. where you have ever been hit with a hurricane or a tropical storm,
00:37you should be preparing now so that you're not rushing at the last minute to make sure you're ready for a landfalling hurricane.
00:44What should you be doing?
00:45Well, first, you want to make a plan.
00:47That's a key always in being prepared.
00:49Now, part of this is knowing the terms.
00:51What's a hurricane watch?
00:51What's a hurricane warning?
00:52What do you need to know?
00:54All of that is available on AccuWeather.com.
00:56All of our AccuReady content is a great resource.
00:59You also should be building an emergency kit, your evacuation bag,
01:02so that you're not rushing at the last minute to grab things before you evacuate.
01:07You also need to know your evacuation zone and the wind rating for your homes
01:10so that you know if you do need to evacuate when those things are announced.
01:13Now, let's talk more about that evacuation bag, that hurricane toolkit.
01:17What should you be throwing in there?
01:19A lot of these things you don't use every day, so you can be putting them in a bag or whatever.
01:23Now, things like a first aid kit, personal documents that, of course,
01:27you don't want to lose to storm surge or flooding or any kind of damage to your home.
01:32Then there's things that you need to, you know, survive if you have to evacuate.
01:35You need water.
01:36You need medications and medical items, extra house keys, extra car keys.
01:41A lot of these things you might not think of at first,
01:43but you can use this as a little bit of a checklist.
01:46But keep the pets in mind, too.
01:47What do they need if you have to evacuate, too?
