00:00Hurricane season officially starts June 1st, so before the tropics get busy, here are three
00:04hurricane terms you actually need to know. First, storm surge. That's ocean water being pushed
00:09inland by a hurricane's winds, and it's often the deadliest part of the storm. In major hurricanes,
00:14water can rise fast enough to completely flood coastal neighborhoods. Next, hurricane watches
00:19versus warnings. A watch means hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.
00:23That's your signal to check supplies, fuel up, and get ready. A warning means hurricane conditions
00:28are expected within 36 hours. If local officials tell you to evacuate during a warning, go.
00:34And finally, the cone. The cone does not show where impacts stop. It only shows where the center
00:39of the storm could track. Dangerous flooding, tornadoes, wind, and storm surge can happen
00:44well outside of it. So before hurricane season ramps up, make sure you understand the terms
00:49before you hear them during an actual storm.
