00:00all right welcome back to newswire here on sports grid let's check in with the new york yankees and

00:05with max goodman from nj.com i got a chance to catch up with max when the yankees were in town

00:10visiting the marlins it was great to see max and chat it up again and talk about the season and man

00:16things at that time for the yankees were not going well to say the least and they didn't get much

00:21better for about a week and now all of a sudden the tide has turned and kind of it's like uh you

00:27know opposite the marlins were playing their best baseball of the season now they've fallen back a

00:30little bit yankees have jumped back on top they're now 12 games over 500 and uh from what i saw last

00:37night max look this could very well be a bullpen that's gonna you know do the high wire act every

00:43night it just feels like no matter who they throw out there even if they bring back rivera on one leg

00:47and retired for 15 years i think that that's going to happen again but the good news is is again 12

00:52games over 500 moving ahead of boston again well that first game in miami craig when they had all

00:58those new trade deadline toys and the four deadline day acquisitions blew that game the three guys in

01:05the bullpen and then caballero missing the ball and right in a in a crushing loss and it's been a long

01:10list of of those kind of you know loss of the year type games for the yankees this season but like

01:16you said they seemingly have turned a corner i mean five and oh on the road against st louis and

01:21tampa this past trip and now they got the red sox coming to town this is a huge series four games

01:27against boston they can really if they take three or four of this series they can bury boston in the

01:32wild card race and distance themselves a little bit and hey toronto just lost two of three to the

01:37pirates so they're they're only four games back in the division and with a month and a half to go

01:42maybe that's not as as far out of reach as it looked a couple of weeks ago yeah we got toronto

01:48here this weekend so i'll get my first look at them in person this year max when i've watched the

01:52yankees red sox games you know each year is different of course this year is oddly been dominated a

01:59little bit by boston what what has happened thus far through the first four or five months of the

02:03season that has led boston to take as many wins as they have against the yankees oh without going into

02:09each individual game i think the the biggest trend for the yankees that's been debilitating for them

02:16is how they've played against teams in their division i mean they they have a sub 500 record

02:20i don't have it off the top of my head against other ale's teams the worst in their division and

02:24if they've played better against those clubs maybe you throw in a couple more wins against boston

02:29toronto over the course of this season they'd be in first place right now and a lot of those losses

02:34you mentioned the bullpen you know devon williams has doomed the yankees in a lot of games so far

02:39this year they've had collapses in the late innings i know there was one game where carlos

02:44narvaez the catcher for the red sox who the yankees traded over there this past winter he

02:49showed his his true self and he's been proving himself in boston this year so we'll see if the

02:54yankees end up regretting that one but yeah the yankees got to play better against the teams in

02:58their division if they want to win this division this year and defend that title they have a lot of

03:02division series coming up as well you know they played the orioles at the end of the year they've got

03:07one more against toronto i believe maybe not but these these four against the the red sox if you

03:13play well and you take care of business against these other good teams you're gonna you're gonna

03:17be in better playoff position come october yeah of course the yankees do lead the all-time series

03:221246 to 1033 that is the all-time record between these two teams uh last five postseason matchups

03:31red sox lead three to two and there certainly is that wild card possibility

03:37backs that if the jays hang on there's that chance that we could see boston and new york going toe to

03:45toe i mean that would be fantastic tv i mean that i can say well that that's a sore subject for

03:51yankees fans because of 2021 when the yankees went up there and gary cole gave up a lot of runs early on

03:57and they ended up losing that game the yankees haven't played in a wild card series yet since

04:01that became a three you know best of three so obviously they're they're wanting to win this

04:06division if they can that's that's the best case scenario but if you got to go and play another team

04:11do they match up better with boston then you know i feel like the yankees don't want to play seattle

04:16for instance because of their pitching staff and how they've gotten better on offense maybe it ends up

04:20being houston for instance if you're in that third wild card spot you got to play the third division

04:25winner there's a lot of different iterations here we're still a little too early to start diving into

04:28the possible matchups but it's going to be one of those teams and again the yankees have to play

04:33better against the clubs that that they've seen a lot in their division this year i i really can't

04:38overstate how important this series is and if they can continue to play good baseball here it's going to

04:42carry into september as well but there's also a scenario where they they stink it up this series and

04:48all that momentum where they've won seven of their last eight it could go away in one weekend at yankee

04:52stadium and the pitching matchups look pretty even on paper with the exception of saturday

04:58where i see will warren facing off against garrett crochet you know honestly i think rodan probably

05:04a big favorite over dustin may so that's advantage yankees but the other two freed baio giolito hill

05:09tonight you can even see the odds are sort of indicating that it could go either way tonight tomorrow

05:13i would expect boston to be favored on saturday i would expect the yankees to be a heavy favorite on

05:18sunday you think that's fair well let's also bring up the fact that max freed has not been an ace for

05:24an extended stretch this summer he has not pitched like the top shelf he did at the very beginning of

05:30this season and he was an all-star caliber possible cy young award winner in his first year in the

05:35yankees uh in in the yankees rotation and that has not been the case for these last several weeks so

05:40this is a big start for him to try to figure things out will warren's been very hit or miss i mean he

05:44can he can rattle off six seven innings against the best of them but he also has the you know he's

05:49susceptible to unraveling a little bit too so big series for that rotation it's been a topsy-turvy

05:55type of year for those guys and if they can take the lead into sixth seventh inning they've got the

06:01the pieces in the bullpen to figure it out and close out games they just haven't been doing that

06:05on balance all season i will say craig if they keep hitting nine homers per game i think they're

06:09going to win a lot of games so they keep putting the ball in the seats that's that'll be good for them

06:1354 and 0 would be my guess something like that uh okay so personal question i'm going to put you on

06:20the spot before you go i know you've been doing this now several years for the yankees and now

06:24you know spending some time on the road as much as allowed i guess that's fair to say what's your

06:30favorite road spot in 2025 this year if you had to think back of all the trips that you've been and

06:35you can use 2024 too or even 23 probably open it up for everything your favorite spot where you're

06:41like okay cool i'm going to this spot on the road well other than miami because then i get to see

06:46you let's think uh i love i love chicago i went to northwestern so whether it's the white socks or

06:53the cubs it's always a blast to be back there la i had never been to dodger stadium before the world

06:58series last fall so i love going out there another favorite ballpark of mine is san francisco

07:03but i've never covered a game there seattle's great as well i i just love going on the road honestly
