00:00Harvest Moon and Wonderful Life
00:03I just bought the game again.
00:05I was soul-crushingly bored right from the moment I started the game.
00:09That's because the game has the slowest, most boring intro of a Harvest Moon game up to this point.
00:15There's no reason for it to take this long.
00:18You start out and see a beach with no one there,
00:21and once revealed to me Takakura is talking to your character's father even though he's not alive anymore.
00:28I'll be calling Takakura Takara from now on.
00:32Because I always did.
00:34Maybe because it's shorter and both words sound like totally unfamiliar names to me.
00:38Every Harvest Moon game starts with a boring bunch of cutscenes.
00:42But it's especially bad in this game.
00:45I don't need Takara to show me every single part of the farm and tell me what it is.
00:50I can walk into these buildings myself and see what they are in seconds.
00:55When your players start a game, you want them to immediately be hooked and excited to play.
01:02But a long boring series of unnecessary cutscenes you can't skip or even speed up the Takzin this time does the opposite.
01:10I wonder why the hell the Takzin doesn't scroll on its own instead of forcing me to put the controller on the floor and mash the A button with my toe while I'm doing something actually worthwhile.
01:19I hate that when the two dogs run up to you, pointy-eared dog is the default option.
01:26Every so often I do pick the pointy-eared dog for the novelty value.
01:30The name selection screen has slippery controls.
01:33It's a bit easier than you'd think to go bring the cursor to the wrong letter with the analog stick.
01:39If anything, there's less namespaces.
01:42It's convenient that you start out with a cow.
01:45You not only have a cow and a pasture, but you don't have to upgrade the barn and coop to be able to hold more animals.
01:53He actually wastes your time even more by introducing you to a bunch of villagers.
01:58But does he introduce you to all of them at once in a town festival or something?
02:03No!
02:05There's only a few villagers or even one measly villager between every fade to black.
02:11Why did the programmers think I need this?
02:14I don't need to be introduced to Rock the blonde who's too stupid to realize his Asian parents adopted him.
02:20Though I do love his necklace and cheerful attitude.
02:23For some reason, your character only gets asked his name when he's about to introduce you to other people.
02:28I don't need to see the camera zoom in on Muffy.
02:31The horribly named blonde girl who's one of only three bachelorettes in this game.
02:37And none of them I really love.
02:39And Celia's the only one I actually like.
02:42But that's purely based on her design.
02:45And she's also nice, but so is Muffy.
02:48Other than that, she's as boring as the rest of the bachelorettes.
02:52Muffy's even called an idiot in the manual.
02:55Every time I go digging in the mine for artifacts.
02:59I wonder why the hell I can't marry Flora.
03:02I like her hairstyle.
03:04And she would've given you a kid that had scholar as his natural inclination.
03:08That would've been convenient for me.
03:11Nami may be smart, but she's always serious and dull, not seeming to be capable of caring about anyone.
03:18I don't see how she's likable.
03:20I can't attach myself to her well.
03:22Plus, she's got short hair.
03:24If I wanted to marry someone in a video game that didn't look like a bachelorette, I would've played the girl version.
03:31Or not played the ROM hack.
03:33And she just comes off as rude.
03:35When you offer her a gift she likes, she says she didn't say she wanted it.
03:39And she tells you to not be so eager just to say hi every time you greet her.
03:44Muffy's just barely pretty.
03:47But it's not in the way you'd expect her to be.
03:50You don't even see Nami, she's still in the inn.
03:53She must've been intended as the hard mode.
03:56Because she only seems to like fossils and cooked items.
04:00You'd expect her to love tomatoes from the other game she's in.
04:05I hate that the game guilts you for not marrying the other girls by having them bitter and alone.
04:10Like last game.
04:12Realistically, as someone familiar with the series, you would assume that the girls would have rival love interests and you'd be able to marry them off so they could be happy.
04:21Ironic that there's two hippie bachelors in this game.
04:25Rock.
04:26And there's the guitarist with the green hat.
04:29Too bad he's ugly.
04:30He's still my favorite bachelor.
04:33Best personality, easily.
04:36Then Takara wastes her time showing you a woman named Chris.
04:40Talk about bad translation.
04:43And her athletic son and husband.
04:45Why?
04:46They do nothing!
04:47And why is he wasting my time showing me this old couple that does nothing?
04:52The old man looks grumpy and awful.
04:55Why the hell did they approve Daryl when he looks and seems creepy?
04:59If this game's trying to be realistic, why does it have the Harvest Sprites waste your time in it?
05:04Unrealistically mistaking a tall human like you for a Harvest Sprite.
05:09Why is your character still silent with you never seeing what they're saying if the game's all ambitiously about trying to be as realistic as possible?
05:18And that's why it has male and female animals.
05:23When a miracle potion was put into the series for a reason, it's much faster than normal breeding.
05:29At least the game has the novelty value of having breeding have a point.
05:33Why does the game skip ahead a few days to spring first when my character is told to go to bed?
05:40Well, I like the spring music at least.
05:43Even though I'm not sure what exact instrument the GameCube midis were trying to go for.
05:48It's at least to the point where I don't feel like playing the quiet winter record on the record player that I conveniently started out with.
05:56But the music gets old.
05:58It also has less than 30 days in each month according to the calendar.
06:04That's not Harvest Moon.
06:06At least it gives the game a faster pacing.
06:08Who would ever expect that you go into first person view with Z?
06:12I don't need the option to feed pets to be a thing.
06:16Pets can't die.
06:18So it just guilts you into wasting forageable items until you know better.
06:22I hate that when I put down the dog, and probably the cat too,
06:26It doesn't bark and get hearts over its head.
06:29Until the girl version.
06:31Nothing happens but a goofy sound effect that takes you out of it.
06:34Much like how there's a goofy annoying sound effect every time you pick something up and put it away.
06:39Especially the latter.
06:41I thought they would have fixed the problem with the dog after the GBC games.
06:46I don't feel like I'm increasing its affection with me.
06:49Why can't you pet your dog or cat?
06:52You can order everything every day of the week.
06:56I really wish I could simply buy a horse from the start.
07:00You can't just buy a black horse either.
07:03Why is this game being so unrealistic if it's trying to use realism as an excuse to justify the gameplay being worse?
07:10Why is the Harvest Goddess not a thing in this game with the lame excuse that the sprites have to gather wonderful things?
07:17And even they don't know what it means.
07:20Tatcraft has to give you a horse later.
07:23For some reason you can't simply buy one.
07:25Because that'd be realistic.
07:27You're way too slow at first.
07:30They once again take the fact that it's a 3D game as an excuse not to have a run button.
07:35But there's also no way to run at all.
07:38The same logic for them giving you a milkable cow right from the start would also apply to giving you a horse right from the start.
07:46The bag in this game starts out letting stack 99 of any item.
07:51And it has multiple different slots.
07:54You can actually pick an image of a seed below the bag space and just see your seeds.
07:59For that extra layer of convenience.
08:02But you have to do an extra button input to get to the Tools or Seeds section.
08:07And the game remembers which section you are at last and that inconveniences you.
08:13And there are so many sections that it's very discouraging to get through them all when sticking to all is a much more convenient feeling.
08:20It feels convenient that time stops while you're doing this.
08:24Because you can still see your character.
08:26So you're not ripped out of the immersion by the menu.
08:29While the game is a super convenient way to teleport all the animals outside and inside by just pressing A twice in front of a metal button on the wall.
08:37And that is something every one of the games should have.
08:40Because now I actually do graze my animals.
08:43It's always agonizing and arbitrary how there's a seconds long delay after you talk to the cow.
08:49And only then are you allowed to snuggle it.
08:52I love that you can hug cows in this game.
08:55Your character snuggles with its head.
08:57And it's an extra thing you can do to boost its affection by pressing Y.
09:01But wouldn't it be obvious and more convenient to have the snuggling be something your character does while talking to it?
09:07They could have had the talking increase affection twice as much as it usually does.
09:11And killed two birds and one stone.
09:14Instead they dragged out interacting with your animals.
09:17You can't snuggle a cow without annoying them while their mouth is moving from eating outside.
09:22Or when they decide to nip at the drop of a hat.
09:26And that's annoying.
09:28It's also confusing that you can talk to a cow and see a heart over its head in a text bubble more than once in a day.
09:35Which makes you wonder if that increases its affection more than once in a day.
09:39How am I supposed to know that?
09:41I love that the cows give you two milk containers instead of one.
09:46It just makes you take longer picking up two milk containers from the ground.
09:50I get why they did this though.
09:52Because you feel like you're earning more money than you would've otherwise
09:56If you have to pick up two milk containers.
09:59I also love that you can milk the cows without even using the milker.
10:03So it saves time.
10:05That does achieve the game's feeling of being a realistic farming game well.
10:09But that all goes out the window when milking the cow magically summons some bottles blow it out of thin air.
10:15It'd be annoying if you were restricted to only milking the cow below some bottles.
10:20Or a bucket if you want to really be realistic.
10:23But the games before this didn't force you to waste time pressing A twice to pick up milk bottles after you milked the cow.
10:31They save time by having you immediately hold milk over your head after you milked the cow.
10:36The two bottles clip into each other.
10:38Which is good because it saves you time but it's also unrealistic.
10:42Taker is misleading when he says that you can milk a cow twice because she's healthy.
10:47What he really means is that two milk bottles will show up instead of one right beside each other until she starts running dry months later.
10:55So if you actually try to milk the cow twice it'll lead to nothing but the cow having a thrust black ball over its head while it moves.
11:03You don't start out with the brush that you need to wash your animals.
11:08At least you don't have to get a shampoo tool to do it.
11:12At least you don't have to know to talk to everyone in town to get given your tools.
11:16Then why do I have to buy the brush?
11:18And the fishing rod?
11:20And you have to buy those things from Van.
11:23But you can't buy from Van every day for some reason.
11:28Isn't it lame that the music only plays on your farm and there's no music at all in most of the areas of the game?
11:34Even the town?
11:36And the game doesn't play different music depending on the season?
11:41That's weird.
11:42I guess the game was rushed.
11:44I love that when you press A to examine a flower you're finally told what it smells like.
11:51Even if the goddess flower barely resembles a flower.
11:55I hate that some flowers are just on the field for decoration.
11:59Most are.
12:00So it takes longer to see the flowers you actually can pick.
12:04It makes no sense that you can't pick the huge amount of flowers that are around the forest or river area.
12:09And they're just distracting.
12:11Picking them would be less boring than fishing all day daily.
12:16And then it'd be a better game than last time.
12:19Why can't you be told the shipping price just by highlighting items in your rucksack?
12:24Thankfully you can also hold it in front of you and press A for the same effect.
12:28The game will tell you about the item instead of making you throw it and destroy it.
12:32The text you get is useless.
12:35It doesn't tell you the item's price.
12:37And the text is so lazy that it's just incomplete sentences to get in as little words as possible.
12:43It's not great game design that you can't jump over the fence around Vesta's farm.
12:48Because if you could, you'd be able to buy seeds from her faster when she's outside.
12:54There's two houses in the other farm that look exactly the same.
12:59Which makes it harder to memorize which is which when in the morning you have to go into one particular building to buy seeds from them.
13:07But you can buy seeds from these two anywhere on their farm if it's the right time of day.
13:12I hate that every time I press A in front of a door, my character wastes time knocking first and then waiting before going to the building.
13:23That never happens in any other game for good reason.
13:27Another instance of intrusive realism.
13:30Too bad time still passes second by second when you're indoors.
13:34But unless you're busy befriending people, at which point time seems to fly by, that's actually not a big deal.
13:41Time moves so slowly in this game that I have more than enough time to get everything I wanted done.
13:46I hate that she tells you not to sell your crops in town because we don't need the competition.
13:53Where else am I supposed to sell them?
13:56Sometimes Vesta's got a bunch of unrelated text boxes to scroll through every time you talk to her that you have to get through every time you want to buy seeds.
14:07The game is so unintuitive and annoying that I looked up guides for it after the third day and realized I was playing the game wrong and restarted my file over again.
14:18To make it long story short, I planted the wrong kinds of seeds.
14:22Because the game overwhelms you with the million different seeds you can buy, including the turnips that apparently die in spring in this game.
14:29That's why in most of the games, they only sell the seeds that you can plant in the appropriate season.
14:35You don't get to have a greenhouse.
14:38So isn't it unrealistic that you can get any seed out of season?
14:42It's unrealistic to never be able to have one when Celia's farm does.
14:47How are you supposed to know how to pronounce her name?
14:50It doesn't show you how much money it costs to buy a particular quantity of seeds before you press the A to buy them.
14:57Unlike last game.
14:59So if you want to avoid having your time wasted from buying the same seed types over and over or finding out you don't have enough money, you need to use a calculator.
15:10That's immersion breaking.
15:12You know what would also be realistic?
15:14If the shop could get sold out of items.
15:17Granted, once you get the seed maker, you don't have to deal with the seed shop as much.
15:22You can actually get the seed maker without having to pay for it from befriending Daryl.
15:29You'd need a guide to know that.
15:32Normal players would be ripped off.
15:34And if you don't buy it in the first chapter, you can never get it.
15:39This actually tells you about which crops grow through which season.
15:43If you're imagining A through the text before you get to buy seeds and accidentally said yes.
15:48This could never happen if you simply chose from a counter to buy seeds.
15:53Crops can grow through two seasons.
15:56Or even three.
15:58This actually makes sense if you consider that months don't last 30 days in this game.
16:03So the game is making up for the shorter months.
16:06The game got rid of seeing a heart on a character's character portrait.
16:11And they got rid of character portraits too.
16:13Which makes sense.
16:15As for mining.
16:18It's needlessly slow and boring as a result.
16:21And you can't just go mining at any time of the day.
16:25And you have to get permission from Carter first.
16:28You don't dig with your hoe this time because that'd be too simple.
16:32Instead you dig for archaeological stuff to be more realistic.
16:36Except you're a farmer.
16:38How are you allowed to do the digging with them?
16:41But it does feel more grounded in reality regardless.
16:44Never mind.
16:45You find a gemstone anyways.
16:47And it's not even a real one.
16:50So it's not even like this to be realistic.
16:53I definitely prefer getting ores and gems.
16:56Because it actually makes sense that people would want to buy them.
16:59Because it can be used for things.
17:01So it's inferior to be getting fossils and old coins.
17:05Which are so worthless to the archaeologists.
17:07That even you're allowed to keep them.
17:09What ruins mining is that every time you dig something up.
17:13You have to wade through an exclamation mark with a goofy sound effect over your character's head.
17:17And some unrealistic light showing up for a while that unrealistically makes noise.
17:21And then finally.
17:23You get the thing you dug up.
17:25And then you have to get past the text box about it.
17:29What boring padding.
17:31Why can't you just hit a rock with a hammer and instantly get an item?
17:35You don't actually see a hole show up.
17:38Instead the entire floor tile turns brown.
17:42And the next time you dig it doesn't look different at all.
17:45The controls are slippery in the mines so that you move too far ahead.
17:50And I wouldn't be going too far ahead in the mines if the squares were bigger.
17:55It's weird to think that you can dig in the squares twice to get stuff.
17:59You only think to do that because you're desperate and think come on.
18:03That can't be all you can do.
18:04That would be terrible game design.
18:06Like having Carter's offer to explain mining to you be the default option every time.
18:12Also there's only one floor as opposed to tons of floors to get specific items from particular ones.
18:19But considering how boring and bare bones mining is in this game.
18:23It's a good thing it's over quickly.
18:26This game forces a time limit on you when you're digging stuff up.
18:31Every time you leave the mine.
18:33The game wastes your time because Carter is required to be talked to first.
18:37And you have to answer yes when he asks you twice if you want to leave.
18:41It takes longer to leave the mine if you talk to Carter first.
18:45When you decide to leave the mine by pressing A near the staircase.
18:50Carter only asks if you want to leave once.
18:53Why can't that always be the case for him?
18:56Then you're forced to show him something you've got.
19:00Well at least your character only shows him one thing.
19:03Even if that's immersion breaking and confusing.
19:06It's such obvious padding that you have to deal with this.
19:10The shipping bin only takes dairy products.
19:13So at first you can't even sell the stuff you got from the mine.
19:17I love that you can put multiple stuff in the bin at a time without any time passing.
19:22And stuff stacks in there.
19:24And even has multiple slots.
19:26So the bin itself would be fantastic.
19:29If it held more than milk.
19:32If it let you ship everything.
19:34Every time you link to Friends of Mineral Town in this game.
19:38You have to mash A to get through redundant text that tells you that you can only link to that game.
19:44I don't understand why there's so much of it.
19:47This happens every single time.
19:50And the text doesn't exactly show up instantly.
19:53It scrolls by.
19:55What's really lame.
19:57Is that you can't just have max linking stars the first time you link.
20:01Even if that was at the penultimate chapter of the game.
20:05It sucks that it works like that.
20:07Because you need all the linking stars to get the seaside cottage.
20:11I never unlocked it no matter how hard I tried.
20:15Even when the linking process is working.
20:17It's full of padding in both games.
20:19So you can't just get everything out of it right away.
20:22You can sell stuff to the villagers yourself.
20:26I also remember hating it.
20:28Because the villagers slowly walk around.
20:30And you have to hope that a villager will decide to buy something from you.
20:32And they won't buy everything from you.
20:34And it's not like there's always villagers showing up.
20:38So you have to time it right.
20:40And it takes a long time to sell all the stuff you have to them when you're waiting this long.
20:46You don't have to talk to a villager to know if you befriended them.
20:50They just look at you.
20:52So that's faster.
20:54But you'd think they would look at you anyways.
20:58Rock turns his head when walking by me even though I don't give him any gifts.
21:02You don't even have to talk to him and he likes you already.
21:06I think I like him because he talks about something other than just the weather.
21:10He also likes to have fun.
21:12Giving gifts to people was ruined in this game.
21:15Because there's actually a wrong time to do it when it never makes any sense that someone would not accept a gift they like just because it's the right time of day.
21:25Giving gifts is a mess.
21:28No other games before this game had that restriction.
21:32This makes it needlessly annoying to get the seed maker.
21:35Because you can only give Daryl a gift at a very specific time of the day that's such a small window.
21:41This is mind-blowingly idiotic.
21:44And it's completely unrealistic.
21:47Sometimes I have to try multiple times in a row before I can finally give someone a gift.
21:53So that's not realistic either.
21:56Why would I have to select yes when trying to give someone a gift now?
22:00Why would you ever want to say no?
22:03That never happened in the earlier games.
22:06I love that Daryl goes to your farm.
22:09It makes giving him a gift easier.
22:11It would be so much simpler to befriend Ruby if she was always in the inn.
22:16Instead you have to go all over town for her if you don't happen to get lucky enough to just bump into her when she's walking around town by accident.
22:25It does save you time that most of the people in the game walk all over the overworld.
22:30So most of the time you talk to people it's outside.
22:33But when you talk to them outside all they want to talk about is the weather.
22:37So nobody feels like they have a personality in this game.
22:40Thank goodness it only takes a couple of gifts to befriend everybody.
22:45I hate every time there's a character in the game where when you offer them a gift.
22:51No is the default option.
22:53Because when you say no to anyone you're screwed for the day.
22:57You can't offer them a gift of that type anymore.
23:01The girl version changed it so that Romina is this way.
23:05I'm sure the previous game did this as well.
23:08But you can only give one gift to somebody a day.
23:12Unless you give them a gift of a different type.
23:15But how would you ever know that after playing the previous one?
23:19I didn't know that until I was an adult and I looked it up.
23:22The default option for Muffy isn't no.
23:25But it is an option that wouldn't raise their affection as much.
23:30Why do they have that as well as yes?
23:33Like it adds that much challenge that you have to press up.
23:37Then what was the point of even doing it?
23:39If you simply hold A when talking to people.
23:43Then if they suddenly ask if the gift is for them and the default answer is no.
23:48You don't select no.
23:50The shelf has always been glitchy.
23:53When you press A in front of it.
23:54You'll see that there's apparently nothing in your rucksack.
23:57You have to be holding something and press A.
24:00And then you'll see the thing you're holding on the left slot.
24:03Press A over it and all of a sudden now the game recognizes all the things in your rucksack.
24:08It's good that the game helpfully tells you what exact seed is planted when you press A in front of it.
24:14It also helpfully tells you that the soil is not very fertile.
24:18After you already planted in it.
24:21It's not like if you plant a crop in the best field it's guaranteed to be a rank or two better.
24:26Which is how it should work.
24:28I could have pressed A in front of the soil and been told how fertile it was before planting.
24:33But I didn't think to do so because no other game in the series lets you do that.
24:39I'm glad the watering cans hold a lot more water than last time so I don't have to refill the large one twice every time I do the farming.
24:48You can also plant fruit trees, a first for the series.
24:52They take a long time to grow.
24:55Just not as long as in real life.
24:58They basically take a year.
25:00Imagine the poor player did nothing but buy tree seeds because they are the most expensive ones.
25:06Just be unable to profit off them until chapter 2.
25:10I had to look up online whether watering trees was a good idea.
25:15Because the soil they're on doesn't always look wet.
25:18It looks just like the soil around it.
25:20It turns out you don't have to water trees after all.
25:24So why are you able to do it?
25:26It just confused people into doing that.
25:29And that's not fun.
25:31I planted a lot of seeds.
25:34I used the old tools code to get that watering can W already because I read online that it waters 10 squares at a time.
25:41Apparently that's only in the girl version.
25:44And in this version of the game.
25:46It only watering one square and running out of water is a horrible glitch.
25:52Year 2 is the earliest you can get it.
25:56That's how long it takes for another wonderful life to be better.
26:01My character's stomach growls as the Japanese onomatopoeia goo appears in the screen.
26:07And it just stands there doing nothing but holding its chest for a while.
26:11It's lazy that there's only two tired animations.
26:14Why isn't there a stamina meter yet?
26:17I'd spent the day making sure to eat every herb I found on my farm.
26:22And still he ended up hungry by the end of the day.
26:26I went to the inn and it doesn't offer anything to eat this time.
26:30I went to the bar.
26:32The only drink I wanted to choose was Mumu Milk because it seems like the only non-alcoholic option.
26:38Why do they even offer alcoholic options in Harvest Moon?
26:42Well that would obviously increase your fatigue points.
26:45But after drinking that milk, my character still did the hungry animation when I pressed start.
26:51And this is the point in a game where I can't cook fish because you can't cook anything but salads and soups at first.
26:59This game's trying to be realistic.
27:01But getting to see the tiredness animation on a pause menu is obviously unrealistic compared to what the previous games went with.
27:08You don't like the idea of wasting potential profit by eating it.
27:13It was better in the GBC games where you couldn't sell the food even if you wanted to.
27:18It's extremely unrealistic to have a village with no grocery store in it.
27:23Like the previous game had.
27:26Wouldn't it be nice if befriending a villager meant they bought mealtime food for you to eat?
27:31That you couldn't ship?
27:33Or better yet, Takakura could do it from the start since he cares about helping you out from the start of the game.
27:40I don't think there are wild dogs in this game.
27:44When it reaches midnight, the game fades to black.
27:47I just pointlessly saw the game telling me that it went to the next day by showing me a big page with a number on it being ripped off revealing another one.
27:55That means you get taken out of fishing if you're fishing.
27:58So you don't want that.
28:00You can get drowsy in this game too.
28:02I really would have appreciated being able to pause and press D to warp home in this game.
28:08Because it's tedious to have to trudge all the way back home.
28:12I also despise that new game is the default option on the title screen.
28:16Because you'll inevitably press A over it without meaning to after waiting an eternity to get past the arrogant ass logos to get to that screen.
28:24I don't remember it taking so long to get to the title screen of real Harvest Moon games.
28:30This is a problem you need to maneuver around every time you boot up the game through no fault of your own.
28:36So like all the other problems, it adds up.
28:38A bigger problem for me is that saving takes forever.
28:42And it discourages you from saving until you're literally about to turn the game off.
28:46At least I see a green bar fill up when it's happening to let you know how close it is to being done.
28:52And I love the saving music.
28:54Why do I always have to pick what memory card to use?
28:58Shouldn't it be obvious that I only want to use the one I'm already using?
29:02Every time I save, I also have to see a text box to scroll through that tells me that the save progress has been saved on the memory card.
29:09That also wastes my time.
29:11Why did they think we need to be told that?
29:14At least when you start a new file, the game automatically has the file you're playing in selected when you try to save.
29:21This game can't even get sleeping right.
29:24You sleep for six hours at a time no matter what.
29:27And the game wastes your time showing you dreams that are literally just little letterboxed squares that consist of only one image.
29:35The dreams indicate your character's stamina status.
29:39I couldn't go mining one time because I mashed the A button in front of the diary trying to save the game.
29:45And sleep was the default option.
29:48It actually forces you to sleep regardless of what you want.
29:52Diaries should be the default option.
29:54For some reason, you only get the money from shipping after looking in your earnings book next to the shipping bin.
30:01It's very confusing because in every other game, you get the money automatically every day in the evening.
30:08Van of old people is the only way you're able to sell most things.
30:13He's not there every day.
30:16Van only shows up on a few measly days from the month.
30:20And one of those days isn't even marked on the calendar.
30:24For some reason.
30:26The seed shops open every day.
30:29Why not Van?
30:31And he only shows up on new.
30:33When he opens or closes up shop, no matter where you are in the game, as long as it's outside, you have to scroll through text from him.
30:42And the game shows Van saying he'll go home with two text lines, when it could have easily been one.
30:47Why are they bother showing us this if they're too lazy and cheap to animate him actually closing up shop?
30:54Or opening up shop?
30:56This isn't in the girl version.
30:59I hate that when Van's wiping his forehead, I can't interact with him.
31:04This is a needlessly terrible way to handle shipping.
31:07Because having to sell every item typed to Van individually takes forever.
31:12It's a problem that you can't immediately go to 1 from 99 at any point by just pressing up.
31:18Why do you have to wait so long before you can do something after you buy from him?
31:24Whenever you agree to buy something, your character doesn't automatically put it away after he gets it.
31:30So if you try to buy something right afterwards, Van will ask you if you want to sell it.
31:36That's annoying because he's the only way you can get a fishing rod in the first chapter.
31:41This is fixed in the girl version.
31:44I remember finding it satisfying to see my cow go from dirty looking to clean.
31:49And it does make sense to see you have to wash them.
31:52But it's just one extra thing you have to do.
31:55You can't just teleport the animals to the watering hole thing.
31:59You'd still have to slowly push every single animal over to it to brush them there.
32:04A few of the animals spawn far away from it and they don't move around much outside.
32:09Which at least makes taking care of them without forgetting which animal you tended to a lot easier.
32:14In this game, you have to choose to push a cow.
32:17This conveniently turns the cow around if you want.
32:20Which is distractingly unrealistic.
32:23Why can't they be trained to go to the washing hole automatically?
32:28They can be trained to go to the milking room automatically.
32:32It's so stupid that if you try to wash an animal while it randomly took a nap during the day,
32:38it'll not only be mad at you briefly, but it won't get washed.
32:42And you can't wash chickens.
32:45So it's jarring that you only have to wash the barn animals.
32:49Why force you to do it if it's only realistic with one animal?
32:53Selective realism makes it clear that it's not about realism.
32:57It's about being needlessly dickish for the sake of a challenge.
33:01The fishing rod doesn't dip almost immediately and give you a chance to catch something right away.
33:07Like in the GBC Harvest Moon games.
33:10I mean it's way better than save the homelands fishing.
33:14But that's not saying much.
33:16The way it works is unintuitive.
33:19You have to wait to get a bite enough times.
33:22You have to wait until it makes a sound effect and the visual makes it obvious.
33:27But even then you can reel in too early and not get the fish.
33:31There's nothing more frustrating in this game than this.
33:35You shouldn't get punished for being too good at timing.
33:39Why can't I see the fish in the river?
33:42This is a 3D game.
33:45Even Sonic Adventure did that.
33:48And once you put away a fish, it puts away your fishing rod.
33:53That didn't happen in the GBC games for good reason.
33:58It really only involves holding A at the right time.
34:01So that's a lot better than last time.
34:04Sure would suck if you had to mash the A button.
34:07That would hurt your thumb.
34:09Big compliment here.
34:11As long as I have the game volume up, I can successfully fish while barely even looking at the screen.
34:16This is because the game plays three sound effects in the water before you finally hear the sound indicating that you got a bite.
34:24I like that the screen shakes when the fish are biting the rod to direct your attention to it.
34:29It's baffling that I can't fish in the sea even though there is one.
34:34But it's actually a good thing that you can't fish in the sea.
34:37Because if you could fish in the sea, you'd have to go all the way over to the sea every time you want to fish.
34:43And then go all the way back home every single night.
34:47It's a lot more convenient that you have to fish in the river.
34:51I love that this game is an easy one to trigger hard events in.
34:55You can trigger them when you walk out of your house during the day by accident.
34:59Not all of them.
35:01I still haven't seen all Nami's events.
35:04And that's another thing.
35:06You don't even have to see all the hard events to get married.
35:10A ton of villagers have a special award for befriending them.
35:15You can get specific tools from them.
35:17You'd think they would be better than the light tools.
35:20But no.
35:22I'd think the weird sickle's better.
35:24But the problem is who you befriend will somehow influence the future career of your character's child.
35:33So it's a good thing there's multiple people you have to befriend to get the musician ending.
35:37So you're not screwed if you befriend Romina.
35:41Because who you befriend influences your kid.
35:45You're better off just getting all the tools on a throw away file where you don't care what the kid does.
35:54There's no evidence of relationship decay in this game.
35:57If I hadn't gone out of my way to research it online.
36:00I never would have found out I had to go to Ruby's kitchen at 9 specifically to get the ruby spice from her.
36:06Wouldn't she be in the kitchen every meal time?
36:09Guess not.
36:11Just try to cook with the spice alone and you'll duplicate it for money.
36:15It's just as boring as the other gameplay styles in the game.
36:18So it's not like it's a different experience using it to make money.
