00:00Harvest Moon Sunshine Islands
00:02This game reminds me of Magical Melody a little with the character designs and 3D graphics
00:07But it's got two major problems that are a constant annoyance
00:11The tool upgrade system
00:14And the new weather system
00:16At least the game lets you use the buttons and control pad to name things if you so choose
00:22And do anything in general
00:25There's a reason I'm skipping Island of Happiness which is entirely touchscreen controlled
00:30Another immediate improvement over Harvest Moon DS
00:33Is that the text scrolls much faster
00:36Like it should
00:38Occasionally I feel like it pops up too fast
00:41And I press A so early that I end up missing what the villager was trying to say
00:45With slow text the game would be more boring
00:48I'm glad time is back to freezing indoors
00:51But I shouldn't have to compliment that
00:53The premise of the game is that the sunstones are missing
00:57And finding them raises the various islands which were magically sunk
01:01Remember how Magical Melody you had a similar concept with collecting notes
01:05And there was a note screen in the main menu
01:08You could highlight the various grayed out notes
01:11And even if you didn't have a note yet
01:13The title of it gave you at least a hint about how to get it
01:16I haven't been able to find anything of the sort here
01:20This game copies the note achievement system with a better reward for getting them
01:27Because you don't have to get half of them to get anything
01:30But you still end up feeling like you need a guide to find out how to get a lot of them
01:35I ended up finding out I could get two sunstones from befriending a bachelorette long enough on my own
01:42One of them is received long after the first one
01:46This immediately creates the immersion breaking plot hole of the fact that the villagers are hoarding sunstones to themselves for no reason
01:55Every time you get a sunstone from someone
01:58The villagers show awareness that your character has been looking for them
02:03So why don't the villagers all bring the sunstones they have to Meadow Island
02:08And raise all the islands they can
02:10And they're never busy
02:12They always just stand around or walk around
02:14Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for it to magically appear in front of you then?
02:20Thankfully, sunstones are easy enough to come by
02:23That by the time I found out I could get sunstones by befriending random villagers
02:27I had already raised plenty of islands
02:29There's always some boring farm music no matter what season it is when you're on Ranch Island
02:36It's supposed to vary it up with new music everywhere every season
02:41Apparently Tree Tranquility does the same thing
02:44It even wasted development time on having new music for every single store you go to
02:50Why the hell do they play the same boring music whenever you go into a pet stable or barn or coop?
02:57It restarts it from the beginning every time you leave
03:00Encouraging you to play the game on mute
03:03Mushroom Island has good music
03:05But it also changes music whenever you go to Mystic Islands
03:09The soundtrack is forgettable and pointless
03:12I don't feel like I missed out by playing it on mute most of the time
03:15This game confuses you by replacing the fatigue meter with a fullness meter
03:20Obviously, if it runs out, that's bad
03:23But shockingly, your character outright faints because of it even if you still have stamina left
03:27Another lane downgrade
03:29At least the stamina and fullness meters are always on screen, that's great
03:33And they take up a tiny amount of it
03:36It's weird that they aren't green like they're supposed to be though
03:39I prefer to see actual numbers as well as meters
03:42So it could tell me exact numbers when it comes to tools and eating stuff
03:48But whatever
03:49Your fullness meter gets better after your character eats
03:52This is like forcing a challenge run of a harvest moon game on you
03:56Where you have to eat
03:58One of the biggest main problems with the game when I started out
04:02Is that there's no way to permanently increase the size of your stamina meter
04:06Sure, you can wear an accessory to temporarily increase it
04:10But imagine the annoyance of it always taking up one of your four item slots
04:14It's manageable
04:16But it's lame enough that I don't even forgive it for being tolerable
04:19I'm glad there are four item slots that you can press R to cycle between now
04:25But it's always bothering me that you can't simply press L to go to the left
04:30And instead L puts away an item
04:32You can also tap any item slot to immediately switch to it
04:36I don't like getting fingerprints on my screen or having to get out the stylus
04:41At least you don't constantly have the stylus out like in the other DS games
04:45But I feel like it's a lot faster to play DS
04:49Where you can just touch any part of the rucksack and equip it in seconds
04:54Maybe that was the best inventory system
04:57Forcing R to switch to an item automatically as you hold it over your head
05:01Sometimes I wish I always had to press Y to do that instead of it being forced on my character
05:06Because if I just want to go all the way to a tool past the item
05:10My character is going to waste my time getting out the item first
05:14Foraging is broken
05:16Because if you don't pick up the stones, branches, and weeds around town
05:20They'll eventually get so plentiful that nothing you want will spawn
05:23Shouldn't there be a town weeder realistically?
05:27Because the game commits the criminal crime of not having a way to replenish your stamina and fatigue
05:32For free from the start of the game
05:35Because it has the audacity to not have a hot spring at all
05:38You end up with barely any stamina to do lumbering by the end of the day
05:42After all the work you had to do
05:43It really is a game of mostly downgrades
05:46On the bright side
05:48The game doesn't have you need to press down before you can go to bed like in Tree Tranquillities
05:53So sleeping is faster
05:55You only have lumber to use for buildings
05:58Meaning that stone is only good for a gift for Ganon
06:01Yes, that's the name of the lumberjack
06:04And it's amusing that they did that
06:05Somehow Nintendo didn't get mad at them because it's one letter off from Ganon
06:09I'm assuming that a lack of a stone and gold and lumber option for buildings means that your barn and coop can't be destroyed anymore by bad weather
06:17But then you get to the toolbox, fridge, and cabinet
06:20Because god forbid they call it a shelf again
06:24And apparently you can upgrade them
06:26Because having them have the maximum amount of space from the start like in all of the earlier games would be good
06:33Yet another way to just cheaply pad out how long it takes to buy everything
06:37To the point where I didn't do it because it would have taken years
06:41I would have fully upgraded them
06:44But because there's other material options for them
06:46All the way up to Mythic Stone
06:48And the game makes no indication that it'll keep the amount of extra screens I gave the toolbox or whatever after I changed the material
06:56I haven't upgraded them at all
06:58Because even one upgrade with Mythic Stones cost too much
07:02It took me forever to learn that I could hold down on an item and drag it over to the bin to chip all of it at once
07:09But here we get another one of the biggest problems of the game
07:13Every item has a redundant freshness ranking
07:17And really redundant size ranking
07:19And uh...
07:21Some other ranking too for quality?
07:25Wouldn't the quality be the size ranking?
07:27Because of this
07:28Every single time you get a new item
07:31It goes into a separate slot in your bank
07:34The second I learned about this I was horrified
07:37Imagine what this does to mining and forging
07:40This is the kind of thing that should have been fixed in the beta base of the game
07:44What's the point if they don't actually look bigger
07:47With the bigger size meter?
07:49I hate when I end up filling up all of my item slots because I've been mining and still want to continue
07:54And I have to go into the menu and drag the various items into each other
07:58And every single item in the game has a letter rank including fodder
08:03And if most of what I have of a type of item is a lower grade than what I'm dragging it into
08:08I'll end up with a bunch of D rank or B rank items because they fuse ranks together
08:13I never liked that when you try to buy something
08:16The menu takes a second to show up
08:18You can notice a delay to the point of selecting the wrong option
08:23It feels like the general store double says the blacksmith's shop of this game
08:27But it saves me time so what am I complaining about
08:30At least it's unique that the blacksmith is a kid prodigy this time
08:35It's also confusing that you can't order makers while you're at this place
08:39You have to talk to the son of the general store owner of all people to equip wonderful stones to your tools
08:46You can also combine several wonderful pieces together to make a new wonderful
08:51You get those pieces as a consolation prize for losing a festival
08:56Why can't he always be in the shop?
08:59Sometimes he's just outside later in the day
09:02Which I feel is only because it's a kid
09:05It means it's not worth the novelty value of him being a kid
09:08While it's cool that the series is giving more of a use to the wonderful stones
09:13The unnecessary overhaul to the tool upgrade system
09:16Is easily one of the biggest problems with the game
09:20And one of the two factors that eventually caused me to just use an action to replay full time
09:25Which always reflects poorly on the game's playability
09:28You can't permanently upgrade tools in this game
09:32Because that'd be common sense
09:34To further complicate things
09:37Every tool is a specific amount of wonderful slots instead of infinite
09:40And your starting tools don't have any wonderful slots
09:44You have to sell them all to the general store owner first
09:48And buy new versions of the tools to be able to upgrade them three times
09:53That's a waste of your time, isn't it?
09:56If you happen to get an indigo wonderful
09:58You can increase the amount of tool slots
10:01But you can't equip more than eight to a tool
10:04You can't equip ten of any particular wonderful to any tool
10:09Each wonderful has its own unintuitive event
10:12It's very hard to memorize which effect the red one and the blue one have
10:16One of them increases your tool range horizontally
10:19When I started out the game
10:21It at least took until the first fall for me to give up on the system entirely
10:25I had to water three squares for each crop square
10:28Then go all the way to Charlie
10:31Every time, once a day
10:33To get him to have another stone equipped
10:35So that I could water two rows ahead at once
10:38And not one
10:38That's lame
10:40They just do everything possible to make it suck
10:43Orange wonderfuls increase the amount of an item you get from a tool by one each
10:48Yellow ones increase the strength of the tool
10:51Making the brush relieve more stress
10:54Green wonderfuls
10:56When used twice in a tool
10:57Make it not deplete any stamina
11:00And when used once
11:02Half the amount of stamina you lose from them
11:04The game would have been so much better if you could have bought huge amounts of wonderfuls
11:09Why in the world can you barely buy any from him?
11:13I guess not having enough wonderfuls is my own fault
11:15But one
11:17The crop festival is only one random crop at a time be its theme
11:21Two
11:22The game never told me that the prize for winning any festival would be a random wonderful
11:27That's not intuitive because it's a new type of prize
11:31The color is even random
11:33That's how unfair it is
11:34For all you know, you'll be stuck with the most useless purple wonderful that gives you money every time you use a tool
11:40If I had been told that was the prize for winning crop festivals
11:44I'd have entered the first season
11:47Because even by the first year
11:49I can still get A-ranked crops consistently
11:51What's so hard about simply letting me go to the mine and get a bunch of mithril to upgrade all of my tools?
11:58Granted, when you put a wonderful in a tool, it upgrades instantly
12:01And the experience system is gone
12:04But who cares compared to all of the other problems?
12:08I'd take uncursing the cursed tools over this
12:11At least it's a permanent upgrade
12:13And at least it's a lot faster to cheat to get a mythic tool to your rucksack
12:17Instead of getting a billion wonderfuls
12:20Watering a lot of stuff took twice as long as it should
12:24But I was putting up with that to humor the game
12:27Until the broken weather system finally made itself clear by the fall
12:31Where suddenly I noticed that my yams were all dying
12:34After all the effort I had to put into watering them
12:37I had to look it up online
12:40Each crop gathers up sun points and water points every day
12:45At least they fixed the problem from Island of Happiness
12:49Where cloudy days don't give you sun points
12:52What the hell was that about?
12:54And you can see when you're buying seeds
12:56That some crops require less of sun and water
12:59And some require more
13:01And some are normal
13:02I can understand why a few people would find this fun
13:06It's certainly interesting to talk about
13:08But why would they think that overcomplicating the game
13:12Making it more stressful would be a fun idea?
13:15Why would I want to memorize this for every crop?
13:19Maybe I made a mistake by picking the yams
13:21But the yams are always the best cash crop of the fall
13:24Of course I picked them
13:26Not having to water certain crops as much
13:29Sounds fun
13:30But it's not like the crop description saying less or more
13:35Instantly told me at a glance what it was all about
13:39There's a reason I didn't learn about the weather system until the fall
13:42You're not put into the habit of actually paying attention
13:45To those particular descriptions
13:47It should have said
13:50Water every other day
13:51Or
13:52It's better for it to get sun every other day
13:55It should have said stuff like
13:57Water every other day
13:59Or water twice as much
14:01Maybe it would be more fun to just plant crops that you only have to water
14:06Every other day
14:08I bet it'd take longer to buy all the marriage requirements
14:11I guess that's a benefit
14:14To needing a certain island raised from sunstone to get married
14:18That it would take so long to do that
14:21That it compensates for taking longer to buy everything
14:24At least the best watering can is better than the one in Tree Tranquility
14:28Every time you use it fully charged up at its best
14:32You have to go back and refill the water
14:34Until you eventually crack and use enough wonderfuls on to make it so that you don't have to refill it at all anymore
14:39I love that you can do that
14:42But because I can only water so much of a field with one charge up
14:46I have to learn to not plant crops at all
14:49In certain vertical roads of the field
14:51Because if I do
14:53I won't have anywhere to stand if one area is taken
14:57Because you can't walk on crops anymore
14:59And if I use my watering can legitimately
15:02It'd take all day in game to water every crop
15:06There's arbitrarily an extra weather called very sunny
15:10That shouldn't have been in the game
15:12Because some crops die with too much sun
15:14The definition of fake difficulty
15:17Is a problem that's not your fault
15:20That you can't do anything to avoid
15:22That's a bit of realism that I don't want game
15:25Especially when the game doesn't have a way to automatically keep track of the stats of your crop squares
15:31You'd literally have to resort to a spreadsheet for them to do this and mark it down
15:35And if you're thinking that you can just reload your file to the previous day and sleep again to get a different weather
15:41Or, like would it be common sense to program, you're wrong
15:44Because the game regress back to the earlier primitive 8-bit games
15:48Where it's predetermined in advance when a blizzard or typhoon is going to happen
15:53The game determines the weather six days in advance
15:57That's so lame
15:59You'd have to do nothing but sleep for six days
16:02And then write down what the weather is going to be like to know it
16:04And then reload to change it
16:07Cheating is how you fix games that are poorly designed and broken
16:10You wouldn't be so bad if you were allowed to have greenhouses on your farm from the beginning
16:15Then you'd never have to deal with the weather system
16:18The weather system could just be an extra challenge for growing crops on public property
16:23No good Harvest Moon game has you go
16:26Oh no, the weather screwed me over
16:29Without it being a typhoon
16:31Every single day can screw you over
16:34At least you can still go into shops and use them after 6pm on festival days
16:39It's a long overdue change
16:41That took me months to learn about because the game never tells you about it
16:45Every time I unlock an island, I get reminded of two annoying problems
16:50First, the game forces you to watch a boring, unskippable cutscene that drags out too long
16:57Where you see the ocean and the island slowly rises from it
17:01It's a miracle all the grass on an island isn't dead from being drowned in the ocean after being raised up
17:07But whatever, I guess the island was protected by an air bubble of magic
17:12Why did the sunstone scatter away again?
17:15The second thing that sucks about unlocking an island is that you have to pay for a bridge to be built to it every time
17:21That always baffles me
17:24This is already a game where I can magically raise an island just by getting sunstones to an island and seeing how Harvest Ride appeared to me
17:31I'd expect the bridge to the island to magically show up too at that point
17:35Even when reading out the script, I'm surprised by this
17:39Instead the game pads out the amount of time it takes to buy everything in it
17:43It always feels arbitrary and mean that I'd have to pay to build a bridge
17:48You can easily get sunstones by pressing A in certain parts of the level design
17:53And sadly, you can't see those sunstones until you actually press A and get them
17:58Because fake difficulty
18:00It requires looking up a guide to find them
18:04You can also get sunstones by doing things that you would have done anyways
18:08Which takes forever
18:10Most of the islands are profitable
18:14Like Greenhouse Island
18:16And the greenhouse isn't big enough
18:18A lot of the islands are good money makers for your character
18:22So there's a genuine incentive to raise them
18:25Even if it does come up as a downgrade
18:28Because previous games didn't have land masses that you couldn't get to that were great money makers
18:34You also need to pay to get a greenhouse built after unlocking Greenhouse Island
18:39Which also feels like a dumb surprise
18:43It's already bad enough to cost like 500,000 gold to make a greenhouse
18:48And a dumb amount of money to put in a watering hole in the place
18:52And a similar price to that to put a pedestal for a sun in there
18:56That's lame because the greenhouse came with a pedestal and watering hole in DS
19:01But at least the suns are not in some arbitrary mine you have to look up
19:05They're only available after buying the greenhouse
19:09So you don't know how to look there up first
19:11And they each cost a few thousand G's of money
19:14It's cool that you can pay to have another sun in the greenhouse to increase the growth speed of your crops
19:20At least in DS, the greenhouses were in the basement of your home
19:25Not north of your barn on a separate island
19:28DS gave me the ability to have three greenhouses of different seasons from each other
19:33You can still throw away an item and accidentally litter in this game though
19:37The first time, and thankfully the only first time
19:40The screen went black for no reason
19:42And I saw a text box telling me that someone trusts me less now
19:45First off, why doesn't the game just tell me it's the harvest goddess right away?
19:50Why doesn't she tell me?
19:51And I can only assume that the reason she trusts me less
19:54Is that she dickishly sent the knowledge that I littered to them telepathically
19:58I don't understand why she cares when, if she knows everything
20:02She'd know that I littered by accident
20:04Because I was either not close enough to the feeding stall
20:07Which eventually caused me to only ever put stuff in the stall by moving north up to the stall
20:13Or, I littered because I was trying to give a gift to a villager that's programmed to be constantly walking around in an annoying arbitrary path
20:20Villagers have never been this annoying to give gifts to before
20:24It better be true that only one villager loses a faction with you for it
20:28Because that'd be a great improvement for once
20:32Like the fact that you can tap villagers to give gifts to them
20:36At least the game lets you put extra feeding stalls in your barn that keeps feeding them the next day if they're not eaten to get around typhoons
20:44But I still don't want to be cheated out of doing the day
20:48And lose crops
20:50So I still won't put up with typhoons
20:52Typhoons aren't my fault unless I don't cheat
20:56And sadly, once you have the max amount of chickens
21:00Having extra feeding stalls to deal with typhoons is no longer an option
21:06I hate that the teleport stone doesn't teleport you directly to doors or specific areas like in the previous games
21:12A stone that merely teleports you to the entrance of an island only saves you a few minutes in game
21:18It's even based on which entrance you used last
21:22So if you warp to Ranch Island from Link Island
21:25You wasted your time because you ended up on the northern part of Ranch Island
21:29I wish the items in the teleport menu were in intuitive order
21:33It takes a while to notice Link Island's an option
21:37Because Ranch Island is the first one
21:39And it's a northern island
21:41Even Friends of Mineral Town had me able to look at the world map
21:45And choose my location based on that
21:48Can you believe this is a remake?
21:51Because you'd think they would've fixed a lot of the problems
