A police investigation has been launched after the vehicle of CCN TV6 Tobago correspondent Elizabeth Williams was set on fire outside her home in the early hours of Friday morning. Williams and her daughter managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread. The Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago is calling for a thorough investigation into what it describes as a deeply troubling incident.

00:00Police are investigating the apparent firebombing of a vehicle belonging to CCN TV6 Tobago correspondent Elizabeth Williams.
00:09The incident occurred shortly after 2 o'clock on Friday morning outside her Tobago home.
00:15Williams says she and her daughter were awakened by a commotion and discovered her vehicle engulfed in flames.
00:22The firebombing of my vehicle occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday.
00:27My daughter and I were at home when we heard a commotion outside.
00:33We investigated and observed that my vehicle was on fire.
00:39We formed a bucket brigade and extinguished the flames.
00:44Williams says police responded quickly after being contacted.
00:48We also contacted police officers who were prompt on the scene.
00:51They also told us they observed someone fleeing the scene and in addition a getaway vehicle was observed on the
01:01other street.
01:03She revealed this is not the first time one of her vehicles has been targeted.
01:07Williams says another of her vehicles had previously been tampered with and that matter also remains under police investigation.

01:38The media association of Trinidad and Tobago has strongly condemned the attack, expressing relief that Williams and her daughter escaped
01:46without injury.
01:47In a statement, Matt called on the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to conduct a swift, thorough and transparent investigation
01:54to determine both those responsible and the motive behind the attack.
01:59The association says there is currently no evidence linking the incident to Williams' work as a journalist.
02:05However, it's stressed that neither can that possibility be ruled out and warned that any attack connected to a journalist's
02:13work would have serious implications for press freedom.
02:17Matt says the incident comes at a time when concerns are growing over the environment in which journalists operate.
02:23It noted that Trinidad and Tobago fell 13 places in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without
02:32Borders,
02:33with the report citing high levels of crime and the targeted harassment of female journalists online among the factors contributing
02:41to the decline.
02:42The association says regardless of the motive, any act of violence or intimidation involving a journalist should be treated with
02:50the utmost seriousness,
02:52adding that journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear.
02:56Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
