00:00:00Our help is in the name of the Lord
00:00:28who made heaven and earth.
00:00:29Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
00:00:31and to the Holy Spirit,
00:00:33who was in the beginning,
00:00:33is now, and ever shall be,
00:00:34world without end.
00:00:35Amen.
00:00:58Good morning, my dear brothers and sisters,
00:01:06and welcome on this 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
00:01:10Let's begin with our morning praise
00:01:11found on page B7 of your White Pew Prayer Books.
00:01:15Page B7.
00:01:18Blessed be the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
00:01:21who enlighten and sanctify our souls and bodies
00:01:23at all times, now and always,
00:01:26and forever and ever.
00:01:28Amen.
00:01:28O Lord, open my lips.
00:01:30And now, I'll shake with their grace.
00:01:33When you give them breath, they live.
00:01:34You give new life to the earth.
00:01:36Alleluia.
00:01:38Praise the Lord, my soul.
00:01:40Lord, my God, how great you are.
00:01:42You are clothed with majesty and glory.
00:01:45You cover yourself with light.
00:01:48You stretched out the heavens like a tent
00:01:50and built your home on the waters above.
00:01:53You use the clouds as your chariot
00:01:55and walk on the wings of the wind.
00:01:57You use the winds as your messengers
00:02:00and flashes of lightning as your servants.
00:02:03From heaven you send rain on the mountains,
00:02:05and the earth is filled with your blessings.
00:02:08You make grass grow for the cattle
00:02:10and plants for man to use,
00:02:12so he can grow his crops
00:02:14and produce wine to make him happy,
00:02:17olive oil to make him cheerful,
00:02:19and bread to give him strength.
00:02:21Lord, you have made so many things.
00:02:24How wisely you made them all.
00:02:26The earth is filled with your creatures.
00:02:28All of them depend on you to give them food
00:02:31when they need it.
00:02:32You give it to them and they eat it.
00:02:34You provide food and they are satisfied.
00:02:37When you turn away, they are afraid.
00:02:39When you hold back your breath,
00:02:41they die and go back to the soil they came from.
00:02:44But when you give them breath, they live.
00:02:46You give new life to the earth.
00:02:48May the glory of the Lord last forever.
00:02:51May the Lord be happy with what he made.
00:02:54I will sing to the Lord all my life.
00:02:56I will sing praises to my God as long as I live.
00:03:00Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
00:03:02and to the Holy Spirit.
00:03:04And let us pray.
00:03:11O God, on the first Pentecost,
00:03:13you instructed the hearts of those who believed in you
00:03:15by the light of the Holy Spirit.
00:03:17Under the inspiration of the same Spirit,
00:03:20give us a taste for what is right and true,
00:03:22and a continuing sense of his joy,
00:03:24bringing presence and power.
00:03:26We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
00:03:30A reading taken from Paul's letter to the church at Galatia.
00:03:33Do not deceive yourselves.
00:03:36No one makes a fool of God.
00:03:38A man will reap exactly what he plants.
00:03:40If he plants in the field of his natural desires,
00:03:43from it he will gather the harvest of death.
00:03:46If he plants in the field of the Spirit,
00:03:48from the Spirit he will gather the harvest of eternal life.
00:03:51So let us not become tired of doing good.
00:03:54For if we do not give up,
00:03:56the time will come when we will reap the harvest.
00:03:58So then as often as we have the chance,
00:04:01we should do good to everyone,
00:04:02but especially to those who belong to our family in the faith.
00:04:06Our help comes from the Lord.
00:04:09Amen.
00:04:10Lord, have mercy.
00:04:12Lord, have mercy.
00:04:13Christ, have mercy.
00:04:15Christ, have mercy.
00:04:16Lord, have mercy.
00:04:19Let us once again hold up in prayer and petition
00:04:21all those who have asked for our prayers,
00:04:23for their health, for their healing,
00:04:25or for any special need,
00:04:27that God, who is the Father of mercy,
00:04:29may grant them all that is needful to them.
00:04:32We pray especially for Laura, Stan, Kelly, Curtis,
00:04:36Joshua, Tom, Karen, Gregory, Teresa, Michelle,

00:05:19Father Andrew, Father Nadim,

00:05:23our civil servants, police officers, and firefighters,
00:05:27for all active retired clergy of our Holy Church,
00:05:30for all students and teachers at Mount Pleasant Middle School
00:05:32over their summer break,
00:05:34for the residents and staff of City Mission of Schenectady,
00:05:37for the residents and staff of Pathways,
00:05:39for all members of the Civil Air Patrol,
00:05:41and for all those who have asked for our prayers for any need or intention.
00:05:45This we remember and pray for in a special way,
00:05:48the people and the clergy of Holy Trinity Parish in Webster, Massachusetts.
00:05:53We hold all these prayers together before God the Father in the words Jesus taught us.
00:05:59Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
00:06:03Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
00:06:07Give us this day our daily bread,
00:06:10and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
00:06:15And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:06:20Amen.
00:06:21Accept our morning worship of praise and supplication,
00:06:23O gracious Almighty God.
00:06:25Give us unshakable faith, firm hope, and sincere love.
00:06:29Bless our comings and our goings, our deeds and our desires,
00:06:32our work and our prayer.
00:06:34Blessed and praised be your precious name and your mighty power,
00:06:37Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever and ever.
00:06:41Amen.
00:06:42Lord, hear our prayer.
00:06:46Let us bless the Lord.
00:06:49Well, good morning, everyone, and welcome.
00:06:52I already feel like it's almost noon.
00:06:54I had early Mass today over at Blessed Virgin Mary Parish.
00:06:58I'm filling in for Father Mark while he's on vacation for a couple weeks.
00:07:04So we get a little bit later start because of the drive.
00:07:07And, of course, our wonderful brothers and sisters in law enforcement were out in force this morning.
00:07:14So I couldn't quite go as fast as I wanted to,
00:07:18but it was a smart thing to do to obey the traffic laws there.
00:07:24So please keep inviting people to join us in meeting the Lord in worship and fellowship.
00:07:29Please remember, before Holy Mass should be a time of silence.
00:07:35It should be a time of reflection.
00:07:37If you look in your pew missal, starting on page 2, there is a beautiful examination of conscience.
00:07:43We should all engage in that so that prepares us for our confession during Holy Mass,
00:07:49so we may make our confessions worthily before the Lord.
00:07:53And that's, you know, of course, why we have coffee hour,
00:07:56because that's a great time to chat and get together and catch up with each other.
00:08:01So we kind of, we get a two-four.
00:08:04We get our social time and we get that time, that special time with the Lord.
00:08:09Rummage Sale, thank you.
00:08:11Thank you to all who came out, supported our Rummage Sale flea market.
00:08:16Thank you to Paul, Gail, and John for leading the effort.
00:08:19support for everyone who did anything to help prepare, whether it was baking stuff or getting a table.
00:08:28You know, it wasn't the basket social, of course.
00:08:30You know, we didn't make, you know, boatloads of money, but we made a good amount of money.
00:08:35And that was very helpful to the parish, especially at this time in the summertime where we need to fill some gaps.
00:08:43So thank you for your support and for all who helped with that.
00:08:48And for all those customers and other vendors that came out, a big thank you to them.
00:08:53They were all wonderful people.
00:08:55Next Sunday, August 17th, we have one Holy Mass at 10 a.m.
00:09:00Following that is our parish picnic out on the lawn here.
00:09:04So there's sign-up sheets for the picnic.
00:09:06If you wish to bring something, please let us know.
00:09:10And I'm going to look in the back row there at our Tatlock boys and ask them.
00:09:15We're going to be out of town.
00:09:16Are you going to be out of town?
00:09:17All right, not a problem.
00:09:19We'll get it done.
00:09:21I'll have to lift some weights this week and work out.
00:09:25And our fall soup sale, this is really easy.
00:09:29You make some soup at home, whatever you like, doesn't matter.
00:09:33And we'll give you containers.
00:09:35And if you bring in like maybe four or five quarts of soup, we'll pop them in the freezer
00:09:40and then sell that this fall as a fundraiser.
00:09:44So that will help us out too, indeed.
00:09:48Altamont Fair is this week.
00:09:51Go out and support the fair.
00:09:52I know some people have signed up to come to the chapel and support that.
00:09:57I will have Holy Mass at the chapel at the fair at 11 a.m. on Friday, which is the Solemnity of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
00:10:07And with that, I have free tickets for the fair.
00:10:12So if you're coming out to help us at the chapel, please see me and I will give you free tickets.
00:10:17Nothing wrong with free tickets, right?
00:10:19And I will be away Monday through Wednesday.
00:10:25We are having our annual clergy retreat and conference.
00:10:29So please, please keep in prayer the priests of our diocese and the deacons of our diocese as we engage in retreat.
00:10:39Pray for them, for their spiritual upbuilding, for their reflection, and for their ministry.
00:10:45And thank you, definitely, thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting Renee and I.
00:10:49As we took a little vacation last week, it was wonderful, it was relaxing, it was peaceful, and I'm full of energy now.
00:11:00So watch out.
00:11:03That's why I'll lift those tables.
00:11:05But thank you, thank you very much for your support.
00:11:08It really is deeply, deeply appreciated.
00:11:11Please note the Holy Mass schedule, event schedule for the week ahead.
00:11:15And again, Friday at the Altamont Fair Chapel at 11 a.m.
00:11:21With that, let us now rise and begin our worship with song.
00:11:25To thee we come, O Lord our God.
00:11:43Before thine altar, Father, thou knowest best our yearning hearts
00:11:55This supplication and answer
00:12:00Lift from want thy people, Lord
00:12:06Bless us, O God, O Father, bless our toil
00:12:13We ask thee not for bliss in life
00:12:19Nor golden treasures splendor
00:12:24But that we enter in the strife
00:12:30Christ's kingdom to engender
00:12:35Lift up from sin thy people, Lord
00:12:41And strengthen us, O Father, bless our toil
00:12:49Under thy cross we stand prepared
00:12:54To serve thee with devotion
00:12:59Be it with sweat of blood or tears
00:13:06Or humble resignation
00:13:09For we thy people are, O Lord
00:13:16Save us, O God
00:13:19O Father, bless our toil
00:13:23Again, good morning, my dear brothers and sisters
00:13:31On this 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
00:13:33Jesus asks us to continue to look forward
00:13:37To look forward in faith
00:13:40To look forward in trust
00:13:42And to always place our hope and our trust in Him
00:13:46Today's Holy Mass is offered for each and every one of you
00:13:50For all of our parishioners, all of our members
00:13:53All those who find their home of faith
00:13:55Here with us at Holy Name of Jesus in Schenectady

00:14:31Complete your examination of conscience
00:14:33Confessing your sins privately to God
00:14:36And seeking His forgiveness
00:14:38How we called our sinfulness
00:14:55In seeking reconciliation with God and each other
00:14:58As an act of confession
00:15:00Let us now recite together the second form of the confit
00:15:03Here on page 66
00:15:05I confess to Almighty God
00:15:08In the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary
00:15:10All the saints and you, my brothers and sisters
00:15:14That I have sinned through my own fault
00:15:16In my thoughts, in my words
00:15:19In what I have done or failed to do
00:15:22I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary
00:15:24All the saints and you, my brothers and sisters
00:15:27To pray for me to the Lord our God
00:15:30As an act of penance for our sinfulness
00:15:33Let us offer up an hour
00:15:34Father this evening
00:15:36Before we go to bed
00:15:37Asking for the Father's help
00:15:39In following His will
00:15:41And trusting in Him
00:15:43May Almighty God have mercy on us
00:15:45Forgive us our sins
00:15:46And bring us to everlasting life
00:15:48May our Lord Jesus Christ
00:15:50Absolve you with His authority vested in me
00:15:53I absolve you from all your sins
00:15:55In the name of the Father
00:15:56And of the Son
00:15:57And of the Holy Spirit
00:15:58Amen
00:15:59The Lord is my strength and my shield
00:16:04In whom my heart trusted and found help
00:16:08So my heart rejoices
00:16:09With my song I praise my God
00:16:13The Lord is our God
00:16:15Who rules the whole earth
00:16:17He remembers forever His covenant
00:16:19The pact imposed for a thousand generations
00:16:23Which He made with Abraham
00:16:25Confirmed by oath to Isaac
00:16:28And ratified as binding for Jacob
00:16:30An everlasting covenant for Israel
00:16:33Glory be to the Father
00:16:35And to the Son
00:16:36And to the Holy Spirit
00:16:37Lord have mercy
00:16:45Christ have mercy
00:16:48Lord have mercy
00:16:51Let's now rise and give glory to God
00:16:55Saying glory to God in the highest
00:16:57And peace to His people on earth
00:17:00Lord God
00:17:01Heavenly King
00:17:02Almighty God and Father
00:17:04We worship you
00:17:06We give you thanks
00:17:07We praise you for your glory
00:17:09Lord Jesus Christ
00:17:11Only Son of the Father
00:17:12Lord God
00:17:14Lamb of God
00:17:15You take away the sins of the world
00:17:17Have mercy on us
00:17:19You are seated at the right hand of the Father
00:17:22Receive our prayer
00:17:23For you alone are the Holy One
00:17:26You alone are the Lord
00:17:27You alone are the Most High
00:17:29Jesus Christ
00:17:31With the Holy Spirit
00:17:32In the glory of God the Father
00:17:35Amen
00:17:36The Lord be with you
00:17:38And also with you
00:17:39Let us pray
00:17:40Heavenly Father
00:17:43You have been our protector
00:17:45Through all generations
00:17:46You have called us
00:17:48And by a covenant bound us
00:17:50Set our hope fully upon the grace that is ours
00:17:54So that we may inherit what you have promised
00:17:57We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ
00:18:00Your Son
00:18:01Who lives and reigns with you
00:18:02And the Holy Spirit
00:18:03One God forever and ever
00:18:06Amen
00:18:07Let us now be seated
00:18:08And attentive to the Lord's Word
00:18:10Amen
00:18:11Amen
00:18:27Our first reading
00:18:30Is a reading from the Book of Wisdom
00:18:32The night of the Passover was known beforehand to our fathers
00:18:38That with sure knowledge of the oaths in which they put their faith
00:18:43They might have courage
00:18:44Your people awaited the salvation of the just
00:18:48And the destruction of their foes
00:18:50For when you punished our adversaries
00:18:53In this you glorified us whom you had summoned
00:18:56For in secret the holy children of the good
00:19:00Were offering sacrifice
00:19:01And putting into effect with one accord
00:19:04The divine institution
00:19:06The Word of the Lord
00:19:07Thanks be to God
00:19:09A responsorial Psalm
00:19:12Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own
00:19:16Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own
00:19:20Exalt you just in the Lord
00:19:24Praise from the upright is fitting
00:19:27Blessed the nation whose God is the Lord
00:19:30The people he has chosen for his own inheritance
00:19:34Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own
00:19:38See the eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear him
00:19:44Upon those who hope for his kindness
00:19:46To deliver them from death
00:19:49And preserve them in spite of famine
00:19:51Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own
00:19:56Our soul waits for the Lord
00:19:59Who is our help and our shield
00:20:01May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us
00:20:04Who have put our hope in you
00:20:07Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own
00:20:11Our second reading
00:20:15Is a reading from the letter to the Hebrews
00:20:17Brothers and sisters
00:20:20Faith is the realization of what is hoped for
00:20:26And evidence of things not seen
00:20:28Because of it, the ancients were well attested
00:20:32By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place
00:20:38That he was to receive as an inheritance
00:20:40He went out, not knowing where he was to go
00:20:44By faith, he sojourned in the promised land
00:20:49As in a foreign country
00:20:51Dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob
00:20:53Heirs of the same promise
00:20:55For he was looking forward to the city with foundations
00:20:59Whose architect and maker is God
00:21:02By faith, he received power to generate
00:21:06Even though he was past the normal age
00:21:09And Sarah herself was sterile
00:21:12For he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy
00:21:17So it was that there came forth from one man
00:21:22Himself as good as dead
00:21:24Descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky
00:21:27And as countless as the sands on the seashore
00:21:30All these died in faith
00:21:33They did not receive what had been promised
00:21:37But saw it and greeted it from afar
00:21:40And acknowledged themselves to be strangers and aliens on earth
00:21:44For those who speak thus
00:21:46Show that they are seeking a homeland
00:21:48If they had been thinking of the land from which they had come
00:21:52They would surely have had opportunity to return
00:21:56But now they desire a better homeland
00:22:00A heavenly one
00:22:01Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God
00:22:05For he has prepared a city for them
00:22:08By faith, Abraham, when put to the test
00:22:13Offered up Isaac
00:22:14And he who had received the promises
00:22:17Was ready to offer his only son
00:22:20Of whom it was said
00:22:22Through Isaac, descendants shall bear your name
00:22:25He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead
00:22:30And he received Isaac back as a symbol
00:22:33The word of the Lord
00:22:36Thanks be to God
00:22:37Please rise
00:22:58Alleluia, alleluia
00:23:01Alleluia, alleluia
00:23:03Anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists
00:23:07And that he rewards those who seek him
00:23:10Alleluia, alleluia
00:23:13Lord be my heart and my lips
00:23:18And I will proclaim this holy gospel
00:23:19Through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen
00:23:21The Lord be with you
00:23:26And also with you
00:23:28A reading from the holy gospel according to St. Luke
00:23:31Glory be to you, O Lord
00:23:33Jesus said to his disciples
00:23:36Do not be afraid any longer, little flock
00:23:40For your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom
00:23:43Sell your belongings and give alms
00:23:46Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out
00:23:49An inexhaustible treasure in heaven
00:23:52That no thief can reach nor moth destroy
00:23:55For where your treasure is
00:23:57There also will your heart be
00:23:59Gird your loins and light your lamps
00:24:02And be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding
00:24:06Ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks
00:24:09Blessed are those servants
00:24:11Who the master finds vigilant on his arrival
00:24:14Amen
00:24:15I say to you
00:24:17He will gird himself
00:24:19Have them recline at table
00:24:21And proceed to wait on them
00:24:23And should he come in the second or third watch
00:24:26And find them prepared in this way
00:24:28Blessed are those servants
00:24:30Be sure of this
00:24:32If the master of the house had known the hour
00:24:34When the thief were coming
00:24:36He would not have let his house be broken into
00:24:39You must be prepared
00:24:41For at an hour you do not expect
00:24:43The Son of Man will come
00:24:45Then Peter said
00:24:46Lord, is this parable meant for us
00:24:49Or for everyone?
00:24:51And the Lord replied
00:24:52Who then is the faithful and prudent steward
00:24:55Whom the master will put in charge of his servants
00:24:58To distribute the food allowance at the proper time
00:25:01Blessed is that servant
00:25:03Whom his master on arrival finds doing so
00:25:06Truly I say to you
00:25:08The master will put the servant in charge of all his property
00:25:12But if that servant says to himself
00:25:14My master is delayed in coming
00:25:17And begins to beat the men's servants
00:25:19And the maid's servants
00:25:20To eat and drink and get drunk
00:25:23Then that servant's master will come
00:25:25At an unexpected day
00:25:27And at an unknown hour
00:25:29And will punish the servant severely
00:25:31And assign him a place with the unfaithful
00:25:35That servant who knew his master's will
00:25:37But did not make preparations
00:25:39Nor act in accord with his will
00:25:41Shall be beaten severely
00:25:43And the servant who was ignorant of his master's will
00:25:46But acted in a way deserving of a severe beating
00:25:50Shall be beaten only lightly
00:25:51Much will be required of the person entrusted with much
00:25:56And still more will be demanded
00:25:58Of the person entrusted with more
00:26:01This is the Gospel of the Lord
00:26:04Praise be to you, O Lord Jesus Christ
00:26:08Holy Spirit, come inspire us
00:26:28Send your sevenfold gifts upon us
00:26:34As we hear your word, Mo Salam
00:26:40Teach our hearts to know wisdom
00:26:45As we hear your word, Mo Salam
00:26:51Teach our hearts to know wisdom
00:26:57Then Peter said
00:27:11Lord, is this parable meant for us
00:27:14Or for everyone
00:27:16In the name of the Father
00:27:17And of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
00:27:19Amen
00:27:20My dear brothers and sisters in Christ
00:27:22Let me repeat what Peter said to Jesus
00:27:27Lord, is this parable meant for us
00:27:30Or for everyone?
00:27:34As followers of Jesus
00:27:36We ask that question a lot more
00:27:39Than we realize we do
00:27:41We say to ourselves
00:27:43Is Jesus really talking to me?
00:27:47Jesus wants me to do that?
00:27:50Jesus wants me to be happy?
00:27:53Oh boy
00:27:53I don't feel happy
00:27:55But he wants me to be happy
00:27:56Jesus asks that of me?
00:28:01Wow, that's a big thing
00:28:04He's asking a lot
00:28:06Like Peter said
00:28:08Is this meant for us?
00:28:11The simple answer to that question is
00:28:13Yes
00:28:13It's meant for us
00:28:15Jesus' instructions are meant for us to follow
00:28:20God himself came to earth
00:28:23He laid out the good news
00:28:26And it is good news
00:28:27And he said
00:28:29Do this
00:28:30Do these things
00:28:31Walk this way
00:28:33Follow this path
00:28:36This is what we are to do
00:28:39His instructions are meant for everyone
00:28:43Of course
00:28:44But
00:28:45His instructions are most particularly meant for us
00:28:49His faithful followers
00:28:51The unfaithful servants
00:28:54The one who took advantage
00:28:57Right?
00:28:58Well those are the believers who
00:28:59When they're confronted with what Jesus asked them to do
00:29:03They say to themselves
00:29:05Well I'm the exception
00:29:08Aren't I the exception?
00:29:13Jesus didn't really mean that
00:29:15Did he?
00:29:17Let me do a little biblical study
00:29:19I'll find some scholar somewhere
00:29:21That says Jesus didn't really mean that
00:29:23You can find that stuff
00:29:25It's out there
00:29:26But if you take Jesus seriously
00:29:29It was meant for us
00:29:31You know
00:29:32God doesn't get my life
00:29:34He doesn't understand
00:29:35How complicated my stuff is
00:29:38You know
00:29:39God doesn't get me
00:29:41So certainly
00:29:43He wasn't talking to me
00:29:45He doesn't understand
00:29:48What I have going on
00:29:49We may not want to admit it
00:29:53Right?
00:29:54It's a hard thing to admit
00:29:55But we say that a lot more
00:29:58Than we think we do
00:29:59In retrospect
00:30:01We do understand
00:30:03What God wants us to do
00:30:05As members of our holy church
00:30:08Which counts this
00:30:09The word of God
00:30:10Preached and proclaimed
00:30:12As a sacrament
00:30:13Right?
00:30:15We're in touch with God's word
00:30:16We're in touch with God's instructions
00:30:18What Jesus has asked us to do
00:30:21And stepping away from it
00:30:24We might say to ourselves
00:30:25Wow
00:30:27I didn't trust in God
00:30:30I didn't do what he wanted me to do
00:30:33I let something get in the way of that
00:30:36We take account of that
00:30:39And we feel bad
00:30:40And we should
00:30:40We should feel bad
00:30:41If we don't do what Jesus asks
00:30:43But that's why in our holy church
00:30:47When we come to holy mass
00:30:48We get that beautiful sacrament of penance
00:30:51Sacrament of reconciliation
00:30:53We're made together with God again
00:30:57We're reconciled to God
00:30:59So we can start anew
00:31:00We can start fresh
00:31:01Once again
00:31:03If I didn't trust in God
00:31:09I'm going to start now
00:31:10I'm going to start right now
00:31:12And I'm going to start following His way
00:31:15For my life
00:31:16In the letter to the Hebrews
00:31:20The writer
00:31:21Some people think it's St. Paul
00:31:23The writer
00:31:24Attests to the faith
00:31:26Of Abraham and the ancients
00:31:29He said these people
00:31:30From a very long time ago
00:31:32Well
00:31:34All they heard of
00:31:36Was that there was a promise
00:31:38That God would save His people
00:31:41There's this promise
00:31:43A long way off
00:31:45As Lauren proclaimed
00:31:47You know
00:31:48It was way far out
00:31:49On the horizon
00:31:50It wasn't
00:31:51It wasn't in their day
00:31:53And it wasn't in their time
00:31:54And they went to their grave
00:31:57Knowing
00:31:59One
00:31:59There was a promise
00:32:00But not yet
00:32:01Having experienced
00:32:02The delivery
00:32:03Right
00:32:04It's kind of like
00:32:06Telling half a joke
00:32:07And never getting to the punchline
00:32:08Right
00:32:09They didn't get the punchline
00:32:11They didn't get the promise
00:32:12But they saw it
00:32:13They saw it coming from afar
00:32:15And because of this
00:32:16The writer to the letter
00:32:18Of the Hebrews said
00:32:19You know
00:32:19They knew where they came from
00:32:21Anybody know where
00:32:22Abraham came from
00:32:23This is a trivia question
00:32:25Ur of the Chaldeans
00:32:28Ur was a city
00:32:29That was kind of
00:32:30Way out on the other side
00:32:32Of where Iran is
00:32:33Nowadays
00:32:34It's kind of way out there
00:32:36Right
00:32:37Ur of the Chaldeans
00:32:38He traveled a long way
00:32:40Trusting in God's promise
00:32:42And he could have gone back
00:32:44They said
00:32:44I'm not getting anything
00:32:47I'm going back
00:32:49Right
00:32:50He was old
00:32:52Sarah was sterile
00:32:53Their relationship was dry
00:32:56But yet God's promise to them
00:33:00Came
00:33:01And Abraham listened
00:33:03And he lived faithfully
00:33:05Focused on the promise
00:33:07He trusted
00:33:09They did not receive
00:33:12What had been promised
00:33:13But saw it
00:33:14And greeted it
00:33:16From afar
00:33:17We're given a key choice
00:33:20Will I follow Jesus' words
00:33:23Will I follow his way
00:33:25Will I trust
00:33:27Will I do the work
00:33:28Of the kingdom
00:33:29And will I do the work
00:33:32Of the kingdom
00:33:33With daily joy
00:33:34Right
00:33:35That's so important
00:33:38We've got to get that
00:33:40It's like
00:33:40We'll wake up in the morning
00:33:41You know
00:33:42I am not a morning person
00:33:43You all know that
00:33:44Right
00:33:45If I can be late somewhere
00:33:46I'm going to be late
00:33:47But we're to greet the day
00:33:51With joy
00:33:52Greet the work
00:33:54Of the kingdom
00:33:55With joy
00:33:56Never start of
00:33:57Shaking our heads
00:33:58And saying
00:33:58Oh I've got to do
00:34:00God's work again
00:34:01Yeah
00:34:03God's work
00:34:04It's great
00:34:05I'm going to go out
00:34:06And I'm going to do that
00:34:07Don't be downcast
00:34:10Don't think self-centeredly
00:34:13Think of the great promise
00:34:15That has been changed
00:34:18You see
00:34:19Abraham and the ancients
00:34:20Saw the promise from afar
00:34:22They saw it way off
00:34:23On the horizon
00:34:24It's kind of like
00:34:25Twilight in the morning
00:34:27That morning twilight period
00:34:28You know
00:34:29Before the sun rises
00:34:31They saw the light from afar
00:34:32Kind of like walking
00:34:35Through a train tunnel
00:34:36In Pennsylvania
00:34:37Lights way on the other end
00:34:39Of the tunnel
00:34:39They saw it from afar
00:34:42But we have it
00:34:43We have the promise
00:34:44It's been delivered
00:34:45We got the punchline
00:34:47And the punchline is
00:34:49Eternal life
00:34:50Salvation
00:34:51A home in heaven
00:34:54For each and every one of us
00:34:56If our insides
00:35:05Are telling us
00:35:06Not to trust
00:35:09Not to follow God's way
00:35:11If we neglect
00:35:13To place our trust
00:35:14And faith in Christ
00:35:16We need to change
00:35:17We need to change
00:35:19We have to put our faith
00:35:23And our trust
00:35:24Where it belongs
00:35:25As Abraham and the ancients did
00:35:28But we have it even better
00:35:30Because we have the promise
00:35:31Right in our hand
00:35:33We have the promise
00:35:35Right in that tabernacle
00:35:36We have that promise
00:35:38Right here in church
00:35:40We have that promise
00:35:41Right here in this beautiful community
00:35:43In our collect
00:35:48Or our opening prayer
00:35:49As most people call it
00:35:51Technical term collect
00:35:53It's spelled collect
00:35:55It's not
00:35:56Collect
00:35:56We heard these words
00:35:58Set our hope fully
00:36:01Upon the grace
00:36:02That is ours
00:36:04Really put our hope there
00:36:06So that we may inherit
00:36:09What you have promised
00:36:11Let's do exactly that
00:36:14Let's place our eyes forward
00:36:16Let's never go backward
00:36:18Placing our eyes forward
00:36:20On the promise
00:36:21That we own
00:36:22And trusting in Jesus
00:36:24Will bring all of our work
00:36:26Into the glory of his kingdom
00:36:29And will glorify our work
00:36:31For his kingdom
00:36:33Amen
00:36:34In the name of the Father
00:36:35Son
00:36:35Holy Spirit
00:36:36Amen
00:36:37Let us now rise
00:36:51And together
00:36:52Profess our faith
00:36:54I believe
00:36:55In one God
00:36:56The Father
00:36:57The Almighty
00:36:58Maker of heaven and earth
00:37:00Of all that is seen
00:37:01And unseen
00:37:02I believe
00:37:03In one Lord
00:37:04Jesus Christ
00:37:05The only Son of God
00:37:07Eternally begotten
00:37:08Of the Father
00:37:09God from God
00:37:11Light from light
00:37:12True God
00:37:13From true God
00:37:14Begotten
00:37:15Not made
00:37:15Of one being
00:37:16With the Father
00:37:17Through him
00:37:18All things are made
00:37:19For us
00:37:20And for our salvation
00:37:22He came down
00:37:22From heaven
00:37:23By the power
00:37:24Of the Holy Spirit
00:37:25He was born
00:37:26Of the Virgin Mary
00:37:28And became man
00:37:29For our sake
00:37:32He was crucified
00:37:33Under Pontius Pilate
00:37:35He suffered death
00:37:36And was buried
00:37:37On the third day
00:37:39He rose again
00:37:40In fulfillment
00:37:41Of the scriptures
00:37:42He ascended
00:37:43Into heaven
00:37:44And is seated
00:37:45At the right hand
00:37:46Of the Father
00:37:47He will come again
00:37:48In glory
00:37:49To judge the living
00:37:50And the dead
00:37:51And his kingdom
00:37:52Will have no end
00:37:53I believe
00:37:54In the Holy Spirit
00:37:55The Lord
00:37:56And giver of life
00:37:57Who proceeds
00:37:58From the Father
00:37:59With the Father
00:38:00And the Son
00:38:01He is worshipped
00:38:02And glorified
00:38:03He has spoken
00:38:04Through the prophets
00:38:05I believe
00:38:06In one holy
00:38:08Catholic
00:38:08And apostolic church
00:38:10I acknowledge
00:38:11One baptism
00:38:12For the forgiveness
00:38:12Of sins
00:38:13I look for
00:38:14The resurrection
00:38:15Of the dead
00:38:16And the life
00:38:17Of the world
00:38:17To come
00:38:18Amen
00:38:19The Lord be with you
00:38:21And also
00:38:22Let us pray
00:38:24The eyes of the Lord
00:38:25Are upon those
00:38:26Who hope
00:38:27For his kindness
00:38:28Our response
00:38:29Will be Lord
00:38:30Hear our prayer
00:38:31For our prime bishop

00:38:36And all who
00:38:37Minister in the church
00:38:38That they lead us
00:38:39Well in fulfilling
00:38:40The spiritual
00:38:41And corporal
00:38:42Works of mercy
00:38:43We pray to the Lord
