00:00Technology made for diabetics making waves in the wellness industry.
00:07Continuous glucose monitors sending information directly from your bloodstream to your phone.
00:13CGMs are being spruiked as helpful with weight loss and preventing the onset of serious health issues.
00:20They can become more proactive in the earlier stages of dysfunction
00:25rather than leading it to an end-stage disease like type 2 diabetes.
00:29But not everyone is convinced.
00:32To me that's a life-saving medical device.
00:35To them it's just to see what their sugar level is doing after they eat a banana.
00:39Like, their pancreas is going to work and it's going to do what it needs to do.
00:43CGMs alert diabetics to deadly spikes and drops in glucose levels.
00:48In a way it does take a bit of the attention away what it's meant to be used for.
00:52Experts have doubts about the benefits of CGM use for non-diabetics.
00:57And there's concern it could lead to unnecessary anxiety.
01:01For a person who doesn't have diabetes, using CGM or continuous glucose monitoring
01:06will really just pick up expected trends in response to the different foods that they're eating
01:11or the different activities that they're doing.
01:13Those who rely on the device are worried if demand for CGMs continues to rise, it could restrict access.
01:20If we see more CGM use for people who don't have diabetes, we do worry that that could potentially impact
01:27the supply levels available for people who do use them for type 1 diabetes management
01:32or any other diabetes management as well.
01:34Type 1 diabetics like me have to replace their glucose monitors every 10 to 14 days.
01:39We get a limited number of partially subsidised CGMs per year.
01:44There's no shortage of these at the moment, but content creators promoting the use to non-diabetics told the ABC
01:52if there was a shortage they'd support diabetics maintaining priority access.
