00:00Professor Ramesh Dhirisaran said crime is getting out of hand and no one is safe.
00:05He referred specifically to an incident on Sunday when Health Minister
00:09Terence D L Singh, the Member of Parliament for St. Joseph, was robbed at
00:13gunpoint in his constituency. He said what happened to the Health Minister is
00:18unfortunate but it is something citizens face daily. He cited as an example the
00:23situation in the U.S. with Donald Trump.
00:25This crime wave will enter fresh and upper domains eventually and it really
00:36means that nobody is safe. The Prime Minister and Minister could have as many
00:41bodyguards as they wish but so what is happening to Donald Trump in the United
00:46States? So we cannot, as they say in Trinidad, we can no longer skylark with
00:52crime. Professor Dhirisaran said that the country's policymakers have a bad
00:57habit of not taking preventative measures and dealing with issues when
01:01they reach a crisis. He lamented that the citizens are living in fear and
01:05discomfort. You have these home invasions and this thing about extortion is a
01:11dangerous, a dangerous event. Extortion puts the whole family in fear because
01:20the extortion process, as we know, deals with a threat. The whole thing is a threat.
01:26Give me the money or else. The criminologists noted that the police
01:30have been doing their best but there's a need to modernize their strategies so
01:34that technology can be used to help fight crime. But what is really of deep
01:40concern, Marlon, we have, today we have so much technology. You have drones. You have
01:49communication interception laws. You have cameras on the streets, or you
01:57should have, and a number of technological apparatus to deal with
02:04national security. Sharla Kistu, TV6 News.
