00:00Government Senator Brian Big got very personal as he called on the labor movement to support the government's home invasion, self-defense and defense of property bill as he spoke during a government consultation with trade unions.
00:15I am a victim of home invasion myself. A person came into my home. So I am telling you, I know what it is like to feel where a person is in your home and you lose that sense of security. Where the only thing that comes into my mind at that time was not only to protect myself, but to protect my loved one.
00:38Senator Big did not only speak about what happened at his home.
00:44You remember a pensioner in Coover who died where her throat was slit from air to air? That's my aunt. That's my father's sister.
00:55So that's why I took this bill serious. And I personally want to thank the Honorable Kamala Prasad-Bissessa, Senior Counsel MP, for ensuring that this bill is brought.
01:12And the Senator also responded to a concern raised by one trade union member with regard to the government's Stand Your Ground legislation.
01:18Crime has no face. Crime has no gender. Crime has no race.
01:28Because they're not going to come into your home and see a comrade here and say, oh gosh, there's one of me. Let me leave.
01:36I'm sorry. I was hoping to go somewhere else. No, it doesn't.
01:41The president of the oil fields workers trade union, Ansel Roger, called for an addition to the bill.
01:46Can we clearly state that once you as a home invader invade a property, you have given up all your right of defense so that anybody who invades, climb over the fence, walk in, break in the house, he or she, they have given up their rights and therefore what you get, you take.
02:12Attorney General John Jeremy responded to those who have been calling for an easier process for the legal ownership of a firearm.
02:20We're giving persons the right to defend themselves.
02:25Firearm reform must involve other pieces of legislation.
02:31The Stand Your Ground legislation is expected to be brought by the government to the parliament soon after the end of its July-August recess.
