00:46Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:55I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur New English.
00:59I'm Alejandra Garcia, thank you.
01:00We're set to begin with this news brief.
01:04On Friday, the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and also the President of the United States, Donald Trump, met at the Elmendorf Richardson Base in Anchorage to discuss the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
01:18Dmitry Peskov, the official representative of the Kremlin, has stated that the event will last approximately six to seven hours.
01:26President Trump has expressed his objectives for the meeting, affirming that he will not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine, while Russia has declared that it will submit a clear and certain proposal.
01:40On the other hand, the US and Russian authorities in charge of managing the security of the event have recently declared that they have increased the precautionary measures to avoid the risk of espionage at the meeting between the two leaders.
01:55We never plan ahead. We know that we have arguments, a clear, understandable position. We will present it.
02:10A lot has already been done during Steve Witkoff's visits. President Putin said this, and Witkoff spoke on behalf of President Trump.
02:18I hope that today we will continue this very useful conversation.
02:22For its part, US President Donald Trump departed Washington for Alaska on Friday, where he underscored the high level of respect on both sides ahead of the talks.
02:37We get along. There's a good respect level on both sides. And I think, you know, something's going to come of it. I noticed he's bringing a lot of business people from Russia. And that's good. I like that because they want to do business, but they're not doing business until we get the worst.
02:55We get along.
02:56We get along.

03:04In Palestine, the death toll from Israel's genocide in Gaza now reaches the 61,776 civilians, mostly women and children, while the number of wounded has reached 154,906. In the last 24 hours, medical sources in the coastal
03:29In 24 hours, medical sources in the coastal end cliff confirmed the deaths of former Palestinians
03:34due to hunger and malnutrition caused by the Zionist regime's aid blockade, making the
03:39total number of hunger-related deaths 239, including 106 children.
03:46In addition, health authorities reported 32 civilians were killed in Israeli attacks across
03:51Gaza, including 13 aid seekers.
03:58Currently authorities have moved to approve the construction of thousands of housing units
04:02in the West Bank as part of a new illegal settlement project in the occupied Palestinian territory.
04:08The announcement was made on Thursday by the Israeli far-right finance minister, Besalel
04:13Smatrish, who stated the move aims to bury the idea of a Palestinian state.
04:18For this, he vowed to greenlit the construction of over 3,000 homes in a settlement that would
04:25connect Jerusalem with the illegal Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim.
04:30The settlement would effectively divide the occupied West Bank into northern and southern
04:35regions.
04:36The plan, which has yet to receive a final approval, has been denounced by the Palestinian Ministry
04:41of Foreign Affairs, which called it an extension of crimes of genocide, displacement and annexation.
04:47And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember, you can join us on TikTok at

05:01Stay with us.
05:02Stay with us.
05:09Welcome back to From the South.
05:12Join us.
05:13We go back to Alaska, to the meeting between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President
05:17Donald Trump.
05:18And also to go deeper into this context, we are going to retake this information in a few
05:26moments because we have a special guest, David Lopez, once again with us.
05:30But now let's go into other topics. Let's go to Venezuela, where the government of Venezuela
05:36ratified to be active and mobilized in the fight against drug trafficking in its jurisdictional
05:42waters of the Caribbean Sea. During the seizure of a new batch of explosives as part of the
05:47dismantling of terrorist actions linked to the extreme right, Interior Minister Diosdado
05:53Cabello stated that the government ratified its commitment with the integral fight against
05:58drug trafficking. The official reiterated that they have reinforced the operational presence
06:05of their security forces in jurisdictional waters of the Caribbean Sea. Cabello denounced
06:10that when the US Drug Control Administration, DIA, carries out operations like the one announced
06:17on Thursday, it is for them to ensure the transport of their drugs.
06:34And we stay in Venezuela, where the government unveiled on Thursday new evidence of the terrorist
06:39actions planned in the country by the far-right opposition with the support of the United States
06:43administration. The Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace of the South American nation,
06:48Diosdado Cabello, declared authorities have seized a new arsenal of explosives, including
06:55over 100 electronic detonators in the northeastern state of Ansuatu, prompting further in-depth
07:02investigations. According to the ongoing probe, the explosives would have been used in planned
07:09attacks on oil facilities, hospitals and main arteries in densely populated cities. In this regard,
07:15Cabello recalled foil plants in Plaza Venezuela in Caracas, as well as in the monumental stadium
07:23in Maturin in the state of Monagas.
07:30And Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele appointed military captain Carla Trigueros as minister of
07:47education, replacing Jose Mauricio Pineda, who was in office since February 2022. Through his official
07:53account on Anex, the president justified the decision highlighting the academic and military
07:59career of Trigueros, which he alleged demonstrates her capacity for leadership and her level of
08:05commitment to promote a profound transformation in the educational system. Trigueros had previously
08:12served as medical advisor to the military health command and was responsible for executing the
08:18logistics plan for their reception, conservation and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic.
08:25And in Bolivia, President Luis Arce sworn in the new high command of the armed forces, reminding
08:45them of their constitutional mandate to uphold democracy. During the ceremony, Rear Admiral Gustavo
08:52Primitivo, Aníbal Escobar, who was sworn in as commander of the armed forces and Brigadier General
08:58Chairman Mario Semte, took office as chief of staff. The president gave them the mission of
09:03maintaining peace and governance. He warned that ignoring the supreme constitutional values would be
09:10a great failure. And in addition, President Arce urged citizens to reflect and go to the polls this
09:16Sunday, also ratifying his commitment to carry out a democratic and orderly transition to hand over
09:23the country's leadership to the new authorities who receive the support of the population.
09:34And as we announced, we go to Alaska to the meeting between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald
09:40Trump. And to go deep into this context, we now welcome as we advanced international analyst David
09:46Lopez. Thank you, David, for joining us today for the second time here now in From the South.
09:59David, can you hear me?
10:00Looks like we are having some technical difficulties, but we are going to be back with our special guest
10:10in upcoming emissions. Now, moving to other topics, Argentina experiences inflationary acceleration
10:18exceeding 1.6% in June and 1.5% in May, bringing year-on-year inflation to 36.6%.
10:27Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census shows inflation in Argentina accelerated to 1.9%
10:36in July. The Argentine Center for Political Economies analysis of index data shows the categories
10:43contributing most to the increase. Recreation and culture rose 4.8% while fruits and vegetables
10:51reported notable increases, 10.4% and 4.5% respectively. These data are presented in a context where the
11:02government of Javier Millet maintains control over the dollar, wages are regulated below prices,
11:08and there has been a notable recession in sales.

11:56Welcome back to From the South. In Switzerland, talks on security, a global treaty to combat plastic
12:03pollution, have failed to reach an agreement at the United Nations. The talks towards a legally binding
12:09instrument on tackling plastic pollution opened on August 5th and had been originally scheduled to
12:15close on Thursday 14th in Geneva after five failed rounds of talks over the past two and a half years.
12:22The draft presented by the chair of the negotiation committee Luis Valles Valdivieso did not limit
12:29plastic pollution or addresses chemicals used in plastic products causing it to be marked
12:35not acceptable by the European Union and rejected by most participant countries and organizations.
12:42On the other hand, oil producing states want the treaty to focus primarily on waste management.
12:53Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate after record temperatures across Europe caused forest
12:59fires throughout the Mediterranean. Greece, Spain and Portugal have ordered mass evacuations after
13:08fires reached cities and towns in all three countries in Portugal. Thousands of firefighters continue
13:14to battle wildfires as flames lit up the night sky. The country is under state of alert until
13:216th Sunday due to the weather forecast and the extreme risk of fires. At least 15 firefighters have
13:27been hospitalized or received medical attention for burns, smoke inhalation or exhaustion. Two young people
13:34accused of starting the fire in the Padres district of Siena were arrested late Wednesday night.
13:47During the fighting operations, several firefighters were injured. In addition, some volunteers and neighbours
13:54are reported missing, while at least seven roads remained closed due to the warning of spreading fires.
14:09In Alaska, new temporary containment barriers installed along the Mendenhall rivers successfully contained
14:16record flooding and prevented widespread damage in the capital. Local officials reported that the dike
14:23system prevented the destruction that affected the area in previous years and the flooding caused by the
14:29release of a large amount of water from the Mendenhall glacier caused the river to reach historic levels
14:36and although the water covered some streets, yards and houses, it receded quickly and authorities reopened
14:43the area's residents, many of whom had been evacuated. Unlike the floods of the previous two years,
14:50no significant damage was reported.
15:01In Japan, August 15th marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with a ceremony in honor of
15:08the millions of people who lost their lives as a result of the war. Approximately 4,500 people, including
15:15officials, family members and descendants of the more than 3 million victims of the tragedy gathered at a
15:23national ceremony held at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo. A minute of silence was held in their honor and
15:30speakers urged the international community to advocate for a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons.
15:36The end of World War II came just six days after the United States launched two nuclear missiles at the
15:42cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing approximately 200,000 people.
15:50And in Japan, protests continue against the presence of U.S. soldiers in the Okinawa Island
15:56under human rights abuses against the population. Although 80 years have passed since the end of World War II,
16:02protesters continue demanding an end to the foreign military presence on the island. For decades,
16:08demonstrators have denounced that local residents are victims of multiple aggressions, including
16:14sexual abuse by U.S. soldiers gathered in front of the Ministeries of Defense and Foreign Affairs.
16:20Protesters have systematically denounced the sustained presence of foreign military personnel
16:26on the territory as a violation of national sovereignty.
16:28The Democratic People's Republic of Korea celebrated on Friday the 80th anniversary of its liberation,
16:39with numerous activities, several of which were attended by the General Secretary of the Workers'
16:44Party, Kim Jong-un. At the main event in Pyongyang's Victory Square, the head of the State Affairs Committee
16:51and a Russian delegation led by the head of the State Duma, Vyayoslav Bolodin, were present at the
16:58event. The opening act paid to view to former President Kim Il-sung, who led the fight against
17:03Japanese colonialism and founded the Democratic Republic of Korea. Prior to the closing ceremony,
17:10Bolodin read a message from President Vladimir Putin in which he reiterated his commitment to the
17:15strategic partnership treaty signed by him and Kim Jong-un in June of last year.
